Decanter 96 (11/2017): If 2012 hinted at a change in climate to warmer, more drought-prone years, 2013 was the turning-point. Just 15cm of rain fell in the whole growing season, which meant disease pressure was removed and growers and winemakers were granted another easy year. 'Ask Napa winemakers what the best vintage of the past decade was, and they will say 2013,' says Cakebread, who agrees this is the wine that 'has it all' - lush, intense red and black berry fruit, grippy tannins and a sheen of spicy oak on the glossy, fresh palate. It is powerful, structured and opulent with great potential. 20 months in 65%-75% new French oak, bottled unfined and unfiltered in in July 2015. 249 cases made. (Drink between 2019-2038).
VM 95+ (10/2015): The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville Ranch Vineyard opens with knock-out aromatics. Mocha, espresso, dark red stone fruit, spice, leather and licorice all open up, but it is the aromatic presence and overall brilliance of the Cabernet Franc in the blend that really stands out and elevates the 2013. The tannins need time to soften, but all the elements are in the right place. Exquisitely layered and sublime, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is a winner from Rosemary Cakebread. Antonio Galloni.
WA 95 (12/2015): Gallica’s beautiful 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon has velvety tannins, loads of plum, blackberry and cassis fruit and a floral component. It has a medium to full-bodied personality that would suggest a suave complex wine from a Bordeaux or Margaux appellation. The wine is quite beautiful with purity, richness and an overall charm that make this an endearing effort in 2013. Moreover, it should drink well for another 20+ years. |
