| WS 84 (11/1995): Distinctively smoky and toasty, sporting lovely, silky texture and nice wood. The finish is a bit diluted and alcoholic. Could use more fruit concentration. Try in 1999. |

| BH 89 (3/2013): I have had two distinctly different experiences with this wine. The most recent example was notably better than the first as it displayed none of the acidic dryness of the first and while, like most '96s, the flavors are not especially dense, there was excellent depth, length and overall balance. Moreover there was a really lovely perfumed and highly complex character to the nose. An excellent Clos de Tart and one that has basically arrived at its peak. For those who might be interested to read how the first bottle performed, please see the big Clos de Tart Progress Report that appeared in Issue 37. Drink Now+. |

| VM 93+ (2/2018): Dark red color; looks like a young wine. Expressive if slightly medicinal aromas of dark berries, purple flowers, spices and crushed-stone minerality. Dense and rather powerful if a bit unrefined, with very rich flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and wild herbs conveying a strong impression of extract (perhaps a bit too much saignee here?). A bit less brisk in the mouth than it is on the nose, but with no shortage of acidity. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and strong saline persistence. (The tannins in today's Clos de Tart are finer.) This wine may be passing through an awkward stage of its evolution in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 97 (2/2019): The 2005 Clos de Tart Grand Cru, tasted from magnum (for some reason, it always seems to turn up in this format), is one of Sylvain Pitiot’s greatest successes. It was picked September 21 to September 24 (at 11am, to be exact). The yield was 27hl/ha with 14° alcohol. The precocity of the growing season seems to suit Pitiot’s winemaking style. Iridescent in color, the 2005 has a majestic, pure bouquet featuring layers of pulsating red berry fruit, wild strawberry and raspberry scents and an underlying mineralite that I suspect requires another decade to really surface above the fruit. The palate is extremely well balanced, with fine tannin, and beautifully poised, that crescendo still in place. This grand cru fans out with a sense of confidence, almost hubris, on the long finish. A towering achievement. Tasted at a private dinner in Beaune. Neal Martin. BH 96 (4/2015): This hasn't changed much from when I first reviewed it from bottle in 2007 though it has not shut down in the fashion of many '05s at this point. An expressive and very ripe black berry fruit, spice, mocha, fresh coffee and earthy nose is surrounded by a more moderate touch of oak that continues onto the rich, full, concentrated, powerful and sweet flavors that possess superb mid-palate density and huge length. This is an extremely rich and concentrated wine that will live for ages and in fact, about the only thing that has changed is that it appears even more structured than I initially thought. In a word, fantastic. Try from 2025+. WA 96 (3/2009): Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s Clos de Tart tasting. The greatest wine from this monopole since 1141? Maybe! A limpid ruby/purple colour. The nose has a brooding intensity to it, closing up shop after wowing everyone in its infancy. Dark cherry, boysenberry, raspberry, a touch of thyme and wild bramble bushes. The palate is medium-bodied, beautifully balanced with silky smooth tannins. Wild strawberry, touch of raspberry and redcurrant with vibrant acidity, a real sense of tension. Great length, a wine suffused with passion. Purrs with panache. Drink 2013-2040. |

WS 94 (10/2010): Intense aromas of graphite and mineral make an immediate impact, with black cherry, black currant and spice flavors adding depth and dimension. This has concentration and a juicy texture, pushing the long, peppery aftertaste. Shows fine harmony and expression overall. Best from 2012 through 2024. 281 cases imported. BH 92 (1/2010): (less than 20% whole cluster). An expressive and quite cool nose blends floral notes, discreet wood, spice hints and ripe black pinot and plum that seamlessly intermingle with rich, delicious and impressively concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess really lovely acid/fruit/tannin balance, all wrapped in a complex, serious and palate staining finish. The subtle influence of the stem tannins gives the very rich, indeed almost lush finish an appealing sense of lift. This displays excellent potential to develop over the next 10 to 15 years and it should last 30. Drink 2017+. WA 93 (6/2010): Sweetly perfumed with flowers and with black fruit candies that render a confectionary impression on the palate (and Sylvain Pitiot did not demur from my description: “bonbon-like"), the 2007 Clos de Tart manages to harmoniously integrate vanilla, caramel, and resin from new wood. Even more than in the corresponding 2008, fresh juiciness of cassis and black raspberry and a saliva-stimulating salinity lend this lift and enticement so that it doesn’t become another too-familiar modern-day exercise in mere dark berry jam on a new oaken shingle. Sandalwood and black tea contribute further interest. Judgments will differ depending on the degree to which one is attracted by the style of this polished and persistent confection of Pinot Noir, but it certainly reflects what Pitiot describes as “my intention - and my taste - (namely) always to harvest just before the limiting point of over-ripeness and excess is reached." I would anticipate this showcasing its virtues and Pitiot’s ideal over the next 7-10 years, and doubt that the 2008 will ever be able to compensate for its relatively less charm, seductiveness, or seamlessness. VM 91 (2/2019): The 2007 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was picked at 27hl/ha from September 6 with 13.66° alcohol, and matured in new oak for 18 months. It is consistent with the style of the vintage – relatively light compared to the “grumpy” 2006, offering vivacious cranberry, crushed strawberry and red currant fruit that intermingles with subtle oyster shell aromas. The palate is replete with sappy red fruit and, like before, there is a subtle Oriental element to this 2007: just a splash of sweet and sour toward the fleshy, smooth finish. One of Pitiot’s more approachable offerings. Enjoy this straightforward but enjoyable Clos de Tart over the next decade. Tasted at a private Clos de Tart dinner in London. Neal Martin. |

BH 96 (1/2011): Mild but not invisible wood frames very ripe yet cool and airy dark fruit aromas that speak of earth, violets, underbrush and a hint of menthol that leads to reserved, intense and tautly muscular broad-shouldered flavors that are textured, naturally sweet, sappy and concentrated while being supported by a notably firm but not aggressive tannic spine and excellent length on the balanced and palate staining finish. This should require between 15 to 20 years to arrive at its apogee as it's noticeably more structured but unlike some less successful '08s, the phenolics here are quite ripe as the low yields and late picking date are clearly in evidence. This resembles the great 2001 more than a little yet there is even more overall depth of material. In short, this should be truly great in time. Drink 2028+. WA 94+ (5/2011): The 2008 Clos de Tart is all class and elegance. It boasts fabulous inner perfume and endless layers of fruit. The nuance, purity and sheer breed are breathtaking. The 2008 shut down quickly in the glass, but not before leaving a lasting impression. The tannins possess incredible elegance, but that may not be fully apparent for a number of years. This is a gorgeous wine in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2043. VM 93+ (4/2011): Good deep medium red. Aromas of musky wild berries, bitter chocolate and smoky oak. Broad, round, sweet and pliant in the middle palate; in fact, deceptively open-knit today owing to its phenolic ripeness. But despite the cool, humid year, this shows plenty of underlying structure. More saline and peppery than primary-fruity on the finish, which features broad tannins. These grapes were picked beginning on October 6, with minimal sorting being done. Needs time in bottle but does it have the energy for a long-term evolution? WS 90 (12/2011): There's an herbaceous side to this red, along with cherry and sandalwood flavors. Balanced on the dry, tannic side overall, with an astringent finish. Needs time to show its pedigree. Best from 2015 through 2027. 1,700 cases made. |
