BH 92-94 (1/2017): A pungent nose consists of wood and reduction today. Otherwise there is excellent volume and an overt muscularity to the powerful, rich and imposing flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a textured and velvety finish that is notably firm but not hard and I very much like the overall depth on the balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This will require at least some patience yet should drink well after only 6 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2027).
VM 92-94 (1/2017): Healthy medium red. Initially deeply pitched, earth-bound aromas of very ripe strawberry and raspberry showed pungent stony minerality with aeration. Fatter, fleshier and sweeter than the young Clos Saint-Denis, offering more volume but less detail to its red fruit flavors in the early going. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins and a surprisingly juicy quality. The Clos Saint-Denis is finer while this wine is more muscular. Stephen Tanzer. |
