WA 96+ (3/2016): Much more tightly knit, structured, and built for the long haul is the 2013 Proprietary Red, which is a 600-case blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. The ceiling on this wine is probably higher than the 2012, but it needs another 2-4 years of bottle age. Opaque purple in color, with hints of white chocolate, black truffle, sweet crème de cassis and blackberry fruit as well as a touch of wood smoke, this wine has great richness, an extraordinary, singular personality, and a fabulous finish of close to 50+ seconds. Kudos to the Chang family and winemaker Sam Kaplan for turning out two profound wines from Pritchard Hill. Look for the 2013 to hit its prime in 5-6 years and last for three decades or more. VM 93 (12/2016): The 2013 Proprietary Red is quite a bit more tannic and structured than the 2012 tasted alongside it, with notable depth and persistence throughout. Crème de cassis, lavender, mocha, dark spices and graphite infuse the powerful finish. Like most of these wines, the 2013 is quite concentrated, but it also appears to have the depth to stand up to the oak. Needless to say, it will be fascinating to see where the 2013 goes. Antonio Galloni. WS 92 (4/2017): A powerful expression of rich, extracted flavors built around mocha, dark berry, graphite, cedar and crushed rock. Though big, this is also graceful and well-balanced. Most impressive on the finish, where the aftertaste lingers. Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2018 through 2029. 600 cases made. |

| VM 92 (12/2016): The 2014 Proprietary Red comes across as a blend of 2012 and 2013. It has some of the brightness of the 2013 but also the slightly more mid-weight structure of the 2012. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and menthol shape the nuanced, articulate finish, with floral notes and attractive lift. Antonio Galloni. |
