JD 100 (8/2020): There are two Syrahs from Lato, both brilliant wines yet distinctly different. The most masculine, peppery, and gamey is the 2018 Syrah Il Padrino, which comes from the Bien Nacido Vineyard located just outside the town of Santa Maria. Its deep ruby purple color is followed by textbook Bien Nacido notes of bacon fat, cracked pepper, beef blood, bouquet garni, blackberries, and darker currants. It's a heavenly, concentrated, powerful wine that offers everything I look for in a great wine: richness without heaviness, incredible complexity, a singular character, and the ability to deliver both intellectual and hedonistic pleasure. Drink this incredible Syrah over the coming 10-12 years.
WA 96 (10/2020): The 2018 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from the Z block. It was co-fermented with 5% Viognier, and about 10% stems were included. Aged in 85% new oak, it has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and gorgeous scents of blackberry and boysenberry jam with pure notes of violet, pepper, menthol and coffee. Medium to full-bodied, it swells outward in flavor, supported by firm, ripe tannins and seamless freshness, and it finishes very long and flavorful. What a classy Syrah!
VM 95 (8/2020): The 2018 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is a total knockout, and another wine that shows just how well suited this Santa Maria site is for Syrah. Deep aromatics open up first, with expansive sage, lavender, black pepper and menthol overtones that lift from the glass. Beautifully layered and so expressive, the Bien Nacido Syrah is simply fabulous. (Drink between 2022-2033). Antonio Galloni. |

JD 93 (8/2020): All destemmed Grenache aged 22 months in 30% new barrels, the 2018 Ora et Labora Bien Nacido Vineyard offers up a juicy bouquet of Bing cherries, black raspberries, sappy herbs, licorice, and ground pepper. Nicely textured, medium to full-bodied, and silky on the palate, with great tannins, drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.
VM 93 (8/2020): The 2018 Grenache Ora et Labora Bien Nacido Vineyard is gorgeous. Bright red cherry fruit, mint and blood orange all grace this super-expressive, mid-weight wine. Bien Nacido is a famous site, and that pedigree definitely comes through in the wine's energy and character. (Drink between 2020-2030). Antonio Galloni. |
