JS 95 (7/2021): Complex nose of wet ferns, wild berries and smoke. As cool and still as it is deep in the woods, this concentrated, tightly wound wine is just beginning to open up. Very classic, stony finish with noble austerity. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. Screw cap. WA 92+ (9/2021): Lauer’s 2020 Kupp GG Fass 18 shows a clear and pure yet intense, still a bit yeasty bouquet. The palate is quite rich and powerful but elegant, revealing a Kupp that needs some years to develop more finesse and charm. The wine is quite intense and lush and provided with tannins that still dry the palate a bit. Tasted in Wiesbaden in August 2021. |

| WA 90 (4/2012): Originating as usual in old vines of the so-called Kern, with southwestern exposure at the extreme northern tip of the Kupp, Lauers’ 2010 Ayler Kupp Riesling Fass 6 Senior finished legally halbtrocken at 11.5% alcohol and displays the sort of primary juiciness and clarity to diverse – saline, stony, peppery, smoky – mineral nuances such as I missed in some of the other wines in this year’s collection. A luscious apple and honeydew matrix acquires cooling herbal essences on a palate whose satiny texture sacrifices nothing in terms of sheer finishing refreshment. I would plan on enjoying this over the next 3-4 years. Of the three casks that came together for this bottling, incidentally, Lauer thinks one each went through partial and full malo-lactic transformations. |

| VM 90 (7/2016): Nicknamed in an allusion to the style of wine favored by Florian Lauer’s grandfather – but also by many “old-time” customers of the estate – this bottling from west-facing slopes at the northern extreme of Ayl used to be uniformly dry but in recent years, including the one in question, can be very subtly off-dry. Scents of pear and cherry are shadowed by their distilled counterparts, and a glossy, subtly creamy, fruit-filled palate preserves lovely transparency to stony, char-like and citrus zest nuances, leading to a lusciously lingering finish. (Drink between 2016-2026). David Schildknecht. |
