VM 89 (5/2013): Thomas Brown is the consulting winemaker here): Good deep ruby-red. Cherry, redcurrant, mocha, tobacco, menthol and loam on the nose. Chewy and rich, with a slightly medicinal cast but good fat to the mid-palate fruit. Finishes with broad, youthfully aggressive tannins. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 90 (5/2013): Cool, soil-driven aromas and flavors of blue fruits, licorice and underbrush struck me as quite claret-like. At once glyceral and fresh, offering lovely depth and sweetness in the middle, with bright tannins giving the wine more obvious focus than the 2009 release. Shows a distinct ferrous quality. Finishes with building ripe tannins. This should age very well. In comparison to the 2009s, the estate's 2010 cabernets are more acid- than tannin-driven, according to winemaker Brown. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 87 (5/2014): Dark ruby-red. Musky aromas of tobacco leaf, eucalyptus, black olive and anise; at once green and a bit tired. Smooth in texture, with red berry flavors joined by spices, licorice and fresh herbs. Not quite as green in the mouth as on the nose but still slightly tart. Tannins are a bit dry. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 90 (12/2014): Round Pond's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is very pretty. Iron, smoke, tobacco, red stone fruits and plenty of Rutherford dust meld together in the glass. Forward, ripe and juicy, yet with good underlying structure and energy, the 2012 should drink beautifully for the next decade or more. Antonio Galloni.

VM 90 (5/2014): Bright red-ruby. Distinctly riper on the nose than the regular release, offering scents of plum, blackberry, flowers and licorice, plus a gravelly nuance. Juicy and energetic on the palate, showing good density of material but coming across as youthfully tight today. Red fruit flavors are complicated by graphite and mocha notes. Finishes juicy and persistent, with substantial dusty tannins. Stephen Tanzer.

VM 93 (1/2018): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve has turned out beautifully. Dark, sumptuous and powerful, the 2015 is a super-attractive wine. Sweet red cherry, rose petal, mint and pomegranate are woven together in a racy Cabernet with no hard edges, good freshness for the year and terrific overall balance. Silky, polished tannins add to the wine's considerable appeal. The Reserve can get a bit lost in Round Pond's range, but it is arguably the wine that best captures the personality of this Rutherford site. (Drink between 2020-2035). Antonio Galloni. JD 91 (1/2019): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Petit Verdot, and the rest Merlot that spent 18 months in 95% new French oak. It offers a ripe, forward, fruit-loaded style as well as plenty of spice, blackcurrant and black raspberry fruit, medium to full body, and sweet tannins. It's a totally charming, satisfying Cabernet to drink over the coming decade. (Drink between 2019-2029) WA 90 (12/2017): The 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a deep garnet-purple color with a crème de cassis, plum preserves and balsamic-scented nose with hints of dried herbs, cedar and black olives. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated in the mouth with a velvety texture, it's spicy on the finish. |
