| VM 97 (1/2020): The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Calarcadia Vineyard is dense, plush and super-expressive. Super-ripe red cherry, red plum, white flowers, mint, blood orange and cinnamon all run through the 2017. I am really impressed with the wine's freshness and nuance, both of which took considerable effort to achieve. Medium in body, exotic and alluring, the 2017 is one of the best wines of the year. Sadly, production is just above 200 cases—which is about half of normal. (Drink between 2022-2037). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (10/2014): The compelling 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is produced from Clones 7, 33 and 337. It’s 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in a combination of 50% new Darnajou and the rest Taransaud. The wine hit 15.1% natural alcohol, and 285 cases were produced. This is a great mountain-style Cabernet Sauvignon with an inky purple color, a gorgeous nose of scorched earth, wet gravel, charcoal, blackberry and crème de cassis. Very full-bodied and exceptionally pure and deep, this is multidimensional with skyscraper texture in a fabulous Cabernet Sauvignon that is still young with tremendous upside. It can be approached now because it’s very much in keeping with the style of 2012, but five years of bottle age will do wonders, and I expect the wine will still be going strong in 25 or 30 years. VM 95 (5/2024): The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon marries the richness favored by winemaker Mark Herold with the more restrained style of the year. The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon that is maturing into a delicate, elegant wine. Red-toned fruit, graphite, blood orange, rose petal and mint are some of the signatures. There's terrific freshness, and also a bit less textural opulence than most wines made here during this period. The 2012 is beautifully done. Antonio Galloni. |

WA 96 (10/2013): The spectacular 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months that finished at 14.8% alcohol. It displays a classic mountain profile of lead pencil shavings, charcoal embers, creme de cassis, blackberries, licorice and a meaty, truffle-like character. Full-bodied and rich as well as exceptionally well-delineated with polished tannins and a savory, intense mouthfeel, this stunning debut Cabernet exudes enormous potential. VM 95 (2/2012): Dirk Fulton and Becky Kukkola purchased the estate, which traces its lineage back to the late 19th century, in 2000. Jim Barbour replanted the vineyards and Mark Herold is in charge of winemaking. The 2009 is the first wine to be released from this steep, hillside site on Diamond Mountain. I also tasted the 2010, but it was too reduced to evaluate. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon is a huge, hulking mountain Cabernet bursting with black fruit, crème de cassis, licorice, smoke, tar and spices. The 2009 shows dazzling richness and tons of power, not to mention tons of personality and character. Mark Herold used 85% new oak barrels for the 2009. With a little less new oak, the wine's signature aromatic and flavor profile might come through with even more clarity. Still, the 2009 is pretty striking just as it is. (Drink between 2014-2024).
