Decanter 97 (10/2021): A wine with big shoulders; it is rich, dense, tannic and a bit firm. The fruit is a touch reserved, but the potential is amply in evidence. Liger-Belair owns three-quarters of a hectare at the southern limit of the Clos. He separates the grapes into three parts: 25% on limestone at the top, a central portion on fairly deep clay, and the bottom on silt. 60% of the vines were planted in 1944 and are vinified as whole clusters; the balance is destemmed by hand.
VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains whole bunch coming from the older vines planted in 1944. I admire the vitality on the nose here, taut and fresh with crushed strawberry and cranberry scents, plenty of mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine structure, slightly chalky towards the finish with a persistent aftertaste. Excellent. Neal Martin.
JM 92-96 (11/2021): The old vines of 1944 account for 60% by surface area but 40% in fruit volume, and these are in whole bunch. The rest, destemmed, comes from the 1992 planting. Very intense black purple, the nose is rather blocked at the moment by a touch of reduction. Blocky, powerful but not cooked. Higher acidity here. Altogether extremely disjointed because so backward. Once this integrates it could become something very interesting, but I have been more cautious for the time being. |

| VM 89+ (11/2014): Full, bright red. Deep but reticent nose suggests very ripe black raspberry and smoked meat. Less plush and sweet than the Charmotte, with tight dark berry and spice flavors dominated today by the wine's serious structure. The long, spicy finish suggests that this slightly wild wine will repay cellaring. (Drink between 2020-2027). Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru has a magnificent nose. Perfumed and utterly seductive, it emanates multi-layered black and red fruit, forest floor, hints of black truffle shavings and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with pure black fruit that disguises the serious structure behind this wine. Gentle but insistently grippy and suffused with mineralité, this fans out wonderfully on the extremely persistent finish. There is a little ostentation derived from the growing season, but the terroir keeps it all in check. Just a little alcoholic on the aftertaste? Très grand Grand Cru. | JM 87 (11/2019): One plot of 3ha from Mâcon-Lugny. Vinified by Thibault but at the Cave de Lugny. Kept in tank. A lovely little green tint to the colour, fresh and delicious nose, sunshine and spring flowers, not too opulent. Will be fined for the protein. Yellow pears and plums, pineapple, too exotic to be a Côte d’Or Bourgogne but lovely wine nonetheless. |
