| WA 99 (10/2004): The 2002 Syrah Astralis Vineyard rivals the greatest wines Roman Bratasiuk has made in his 15-year career. This compelling, black/blue-hued offering from 75-year-old Syrah vines tastes like blood of the vine. An extraordinary perfume of flowers, creme de cassis, blackberries, roasted meat, new saddle leather, and earth is followed by a wine with sweet tannin, sensational concentration, full body, an unctuous texture, and a full-throttle, tannic finish. Yet it reveals unbelievable elegance and finesse. Too many Euro-centric elitists argue that Australian wines are too rich and over the top, but all of these offerings have been made by someone with great talent and vision who takes the extraordinary ripeness and purity of fruit available from these old vine vineyards and crafts them into wines that are quite European in style ... just richer and denser. | WA 97 (12/2009): Clarendon Hills’ flagship is the 2007 Syrah Astralis. It is an exemplar of what old vines and a great terroir can achieve in a less than great vintage. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, tar, underbrush, meat, licorice, and blackberry lead to a burly, masculine version of Astralis. It has tremendous grip, plenty of fine-grained tannin, layers of savory fruit, and 10-12 years of aging potential. Patience will be required. |

| WA 97 (2/2014): Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2009 Astralis presents a very fruity, floral nose with lifted notes of blueberries. The palate is concentrated with a slight prune character and has very crisp acidity. At this stage the phenolics are showing a little chewy before finishing long. Drink it now to 2027+. |

VM 89+ (8/2003): Medium red-ruby. Expressive nose melds raspberry, currant, smoked meat, truffle and espresso, with a very ripe smoky element. Sweet but quite firm in the mouth; the bright berry fruit seems a bit youthfully hard, owing to the wines strong spine of acidity. Juicy finish shows firm but fine tannins.
WA 88 (8/2003): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Brookmans Vineyard is a dense, chewy, full-bodied effort revealing plenty of cassis, a multi-layered texture, and moderately high tannin in the finish. Patience will be required as this seems to be a slightly leaner version of Cabernet Sauvignon than the other examples. |

| VM 92+ (10/2007): Ruby-red. Slow-building, exotic bouquet of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, Cuban tobacco, violet and black pepper. Supple blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors gain depth with air, taking a liqueur-like dark berry turn but maintaining focus. Youthfully firm tannins add grip to the impressively long, juicy finish. Plenty sweet and seductive now but I'd give this some time in bottle to loosen up. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 97 (10/2007): The 2005 Syrah Piggott Range is quite backward currently. Glass-coating, it is deep crimson in color with mineral notes, violets, spice box, black pepper, espresso, smoked game, and blueberry aromatics. Deceivingly opulent, it has enough structure to merit 8-10 years of cellaring and should make old bones. Drink it through 2035.
VM 93+ (10/2007): Inky purple. Deeply concentrated, slowly unfolding aromas of blueberry, mulberry and candied plum are complicated by bacon fat and espresso, with sexy oak spices adding interest. Chunky tannins give structural support to the brooding fruit. Picks up a brighter cherry character on the chewy finish, which offers exceptional cling and length. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 90 (8/2003): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Sandown Vineyard was closed the day I tasted it, but it revealed enormous concentration as well as plenty of potential. The black/purple color is followed by copious quantities of tobacco, cassis, earth, and wood characteristics. Made in a full-bodied, powerful style meant for long-term cellaring, it will be at its best between 2007-2020.
VM 90 (8/2003): Bright ruby-red. Black raspberry, tobacco leaf, leather and a whiff of eucalyptus on the varietally accurate nose. Rich and chewy, with complex, deep flavors of mulberry, blueberry and tobacco. This wine can get too jammy in warmer years, but obviously benefitted from more moderate conditions in 2001. Dense and smooth, with hints of game and mint. Firmly tannic on the finish. Stephen Tanzer. |
