JS 98 (12/2014): Crazy nose with chocolate, smoke, grilled meat, ripe fruits and walnuts. The palate is super and goes on for minutes with plum, berry, spice, chocolate, and nuts. Full body, velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Amazing quality. Goes on for minutes. Made from biodynamically grown grapes.
VM 95 (2/2015): The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is gorgeous. A super-classic profile of sweet red cherries, smoke, tobacco, cedar and wild herbs lift from the glass in a perfumed, silky Brunello that captures the essence of Sangiovese in this cool, late-ripening vintage. The 2010 is delicious today, but it can also be cellared for another 15-20 years. Le Ragnaie's 2010 will appeal to readers with an appreciation for Red Burgundy or Nebbiolo. The 2010 is a blend of fruit from three sources. About 50% of the fruit came from the Ragnaie property, while the rest of the fruit was sourced from vineyards in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, a combination that yields a wonderfully complete Brunello full of intrigue.
WA 93 (2/2015): The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows easy lines with delicate nuances of red berry, bramble, rose petal, dusty earth, crushed mineral, licorice and grilled herb. No one element outweighs the others. The wine presents a delicate patchwork of Sangiovese nuances but does so in the most elegant and understated matter. Feminine in personality, the wine glides smoothly over the palate with gentle, polished tannins. This wine should show well in a few more years. |

VM 94 (11/2020): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino from Le Ragnaie mixes nuances of wild herbs and stone dust with bright notions of strawberry and dried roses. It’s silky and pliant upon entry yet quickly gains tactile depths through salty mineral tones, as floral-laced red berries cascade across the palate. The symmetry here is impeccable, as is its purity of fruit, with fine tannins that result in a structured finale. That said, it should only take a few years of cellaring to bring this fully into focus. Often referred to as the “White Label,” this blends fruit from Le Ragnaie’s vineyards located throughout Montalcino to create a balanced expression of each vintage. JD 94 (3/2021): The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is perfumed with high-toned aromatics of fresh rosehip, fresh red cherry, and anise. The palate is crisp and energetic with cherry pit, dried red plum, and fresh tomato leaf, with fine-grained tannins with linear acidity. A vibrant wine to enjoy 2023-2033. Audrey Frick.
JS 94 (10/2020): Orange peel scents to the aromas of cherries, mahogany, wet earth and cedar. It’s full-bodied, yet rather tight and reserved with pretty, dusty tannins that are fine-grained. Lots of citrus and red fruit at the end. From organically grown grapes. Better after 2023.
WA 94 (11/2020): The only new releases from Le Ragnaie fitted with a white label instead of a black one, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is the most accessible and near-term in the portfolio. This is a very elegant and perfumed expression of Sangiovese with lifted floral aromas that recall blue flower and wild rose. Beyond those delicate tones, you get cherry, cassis and other classic aromas linked to Sangiovese. This wine draws on a blend of fruit from various vineyard sites with high and low elevations. Production is 27,700 bottles. |

JD 95 (2/2024): A beautiful cologne lifts from the glass of the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino, which pours a red/orange-tinged color. Aromas of wild cherries, truffles, bittersweet chocolate, and dried orange peel are followed by a medium to full-bodied red with fine, coiled tannins, a linear feel, and refreshing lift all the way through the finish. I love the tertiary notes that come through, and this wine will only improve and gain in complexity over time. Drink 2025-2040. Audrey Frick.
WA 95 (12/2023): The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows delicate aromas of blue flower, redcurrant, cranberry and potting soils. It has all the basic components of a classic Sangiovese. Fruit is sourced from across the estate vineyard holdings ranging from 200 to 600 meters above sea level, or the ceiling of the appellation. Baking spice is delivered to the palate with silky, almost glossy tannins. The mouthfeel is extremely fine. This is a very Burgundian Brunello, with 38,500 bottles made.
VM 93 (12/2023): The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly in the glass, dusty and floral, with depths of dark red fruit and exotic spice. This is silky smooth with medium-bodied textures and vibrant acidity that propels its tart wild berry fruits and mineral tones as rosy inner florals race across the palate. It tapers off with admirable length and concentration. Crunchy tannins frame the experience without slowing its momentum. The 2019 is a gorgeous blend of vintage and house style. Don't miss it. VM 95+ (12/2022): The 2018 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli is a sleeping giant, slowly coming to life with a bouquet of dusty rose and brown spice over a core of dried black cherries. This is like crushed velvet on the palate, yet surprisingly lifted and graceful in feel, as dark red fruits and mineral tones drench the senses in primary concentration, leaving an air of balsam herbs to resonate. A caking of fine tannins is left to linger, nicely contrasted by a sizzle of residual acidity; yet in the end, the impression is one of youthful structure and poise. JD 97+ (1/2025): Pouring a bright red color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli shows off a very pretty side of this vintage, with notes of wild strawberries, chili flake, dried earth, orange peel, and thyme. Medium-bodied, it’s elegant and mineral-driven, with angular tannins, the most linear feel in the range, and an evenly tapering finish. It is not the most obvious wine in the range, but it may very well prove to be one of the best wines from Montosoli in 2020. Drink over 2027-2047. Audrey Frick.
WA 97 (11/2024): The Le Ragnaie 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli (with 4,400 bottles created) comes from a celebrated site on the north side of the appellation at 300 meters in elevation. Montosoli is characterized by very special shale galestro clay soils that are brittle and friable. These conditions result in extremely focused aromatic characteristics of wet stone, blue flower and blood orange. That note of violet or lavender is exceptional. The wine finishes with a salty note, and don't underestimate that firm tannic bite. Only eight Montalcino estates have access to fruit from Montosoli.
VM 94 (11/2024): The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Casanovina Montosoli opens with an alluring bouquet that blends mentholated herbs and hints of camphor with crushed blackberries and a tinge of sour citrus. It's round and supple with dark red fruits and sweet inner herbal tones that ride a stream of fresh acidity. WA 94 (2/2018): Le Ragnaie's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace is a slightly more robust and structured expression. It has a sturdier vinous exoskeleton, so to speak. For this reason, it needs longer to age and will undoubtedly benefit from more years in your cellar. In fact, I tasted this wine several times over the course of many hours and was delighted by the steady and positive evolution it showed. Given time, the wine gives wild berry and earthy tones that come together with encouraging symmetry.
VM 93+ (4/2018): Dark red with a pale rim. Aromas of raspberry, violet, iris, licorice and sweet spices are accented by white pepper. Ripe but vibrant, this highly concentrated, seamless wine boasts nicely integrated acidity and light peppery and strong floral qualities giving lift to the explosive midpalate. Finishes with sweet, building tannins and superb fruity persistence complicated by notes of tar and licorice. Remarkably rich, pliant and distinctive traditional Brunello. Ian d'Agata.

JD 97+ (1/2025): The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Fornace is a spectacular way to close out the wines of 2020 from Le Ragnaie. Aromatic of grenadine, sweet balsamic herbs, leather, and licorice candies, the palate really sets itself apart, with fine tannins, mouthwatering, salted, ripe orange citrus, iron-rich earth, and a clean, stony, driving finish. Persistent and long, it’s going to need another couple of years in cellar. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick.
WA 96 (11/2024): This wine usually shows a more relaxed character compared to the other bottles in this series of single-vineyard wines from Le Ragnaie. The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Fornace draws its fruit from a vineyard located at 380 meters in elevation not too far from Mastrojanni. The site was once at the bottom of an ancient seabed, and there are round limestone rocks as a result. That theme of "roundness" is transferred to the palate, where the wine offers layers of plush and supple fruit. Like the others, it ages in large oak casks for 3.5 years and is bottled directly from the botte. Only 3,000 bottles were created. In a tasting of his cru wines, Riccardo Campinoti serves this wine last because it delivers a bigger sense of concentration and textural density (while remaining within the transparency of the house style). |

WA 98 (12/2023): This wine kisses the sky with fruit from bush-trained vines planted in 2012 at the highest point of the appellation (above 600 meters in elevation). This is a wine to watch in the future, especially as these vines grow older. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento has a fine and direct bouquet with vibrant red fruit, cranberry, pressed rose and rosemary blossom. Fruit and floral components run very strong, and you don't get as much of the earthiness that we find in the other wines. Instead, it feels mineral and salty. Crunchy fruit and powdery tannins fuel a very long and polished finish with a contained 13.5% alcohol content. This wine is fluid and more of a shape-shifter. Only 4,400 bottles were made.
JD 97 (2/2024): To close out the single vineyard wines, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Passo Del Lume Spento takes a youthful red/garnet-tinged color and, as with the rest of the wines of this vintage from Le Ragnaie, has a signature stamp of incredible perfume lifting from the glass out of the gate, with notes fresh Mediterranean herbs, ripe cherries, anise, and crushed rose petals. Ripe citrus-toned fruit fills the palate of this medium-bodied Brunello, which has great mouthwatering acidity that floats through the sides of the palate, angular tannins, and a mineral-toned finish. It’s packed with tension, though, and is deserving of another year or two of cellaring before drinking 2025-2045. Audrey Frick.

This is juicy in character and wickedly fresh, showing its minerality up front as a tart wave of wild berries descends upon the palate. It finishes with cheek-puckering tension, potent and primary, along with a coating of fine-grained tannins, all balanced by a bump of residual acidity. The mouthfeel veers toward chalky, and there is a hint of minerality with wet limestone or rose quartz. It shows managed tannins over mid-weight texture for a very elegant finish.

WA 96 (12/2023): The character of this wine is more accessible and open-knit. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Petroso is less ethereal but more grounded, with an obvious delivery of fruit (and more primary intensity) framed by caramel, light tobacco leaf, redcurrant, cherry and wild plum. An herbal element comes forward too with white pepper and something fun that recalls cashew celery root. The mouthfeel veers toward chalky, and there is a hint of minerality with wet limestone or rose quartz. It shows managed tannins over mid-weight texture for a very elegant finish.
JD 96 (2/2024): The fourth vintage for this single vineyard, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Petroso takes a medium red color and has a gorgeous aromatic profile in its perfume of jasmine, dried cranberries, tangerine, and thyme. Displaying a Burgundian aesthetic, this medium-bodied Brunello has refined tannins, even, fresh acidity, and a delicate stony texture. It’s a beautiful wine that gently floats off the palate. With a wide drinking window, this is going to be one that’s hard to hold onto, but it will be worth cellaring. Drink 2024-2040. Audrey Frick.

WA 99 (12/2023): This wine is a star of the vintage. It is made with fruit from vines planted in 1968 in ancient soils rich in quartz at a very high 600 meters in elevation. The Le Ragnaie 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. (the initials stand for “vecchie vigne,” or "old vines") reveals a soulful personality with a very elegant set of aromas and compelling complexity. There is heritage rose, lilac and something earthy like tarragon or marjoram. Underripe cherry and redcurrant are found at the core; however, that ethereal herbal note continues to the palate where it meets a chalky mineral tone. Powdery tannins stick to the side of your mouth for a very long time.
JD 98 (2/2024): A similar medium red color, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. is another showstopper, with stunning floral and layered aromas of licorice, ripe red cherries, blood orange, and clove. Mouthwatering and structured, this is a noble wine, and while it’s medium-bodied. It’s not for the faint of heart. With ripe, angular tannins that frame this wine, it propels through the palate with notes of saline and vibrant acidity. Long and tension-packed, it demands several years of proper cellaring and feels as though it will improve over the coming two decades at a glacial pace. Drink 2027-2047. Audrey Frick.
VM 95+ (12/2023): The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino VV is youthfully coy in the glass, lifting up with a nuanced blend of dried roses, licorice and clove, excited by hints of spiced oranges. This is cool-toned and saline in character, with silken textures contrasted by crisp red fruits and salty mineral tones that saturate the senses. The 2019 finishes long, primary and with crunchy tannins, yet there are depths of complexity here just waiting to unfold. JD 98 (1/2025): The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V. is a cut above the rest in this vintage and really over-delivers, bringing all the best elements of this vintage into rich contrast. Revealing ripe aromatics of kirsch, fresh leather, sweet tobacco, blood orange, and anise, the palate is saturated and pure, with incredible lift while also having notable depth, and it has an incredibly long-lasting finish, with crystalline salty accents. This powerful wine is going to benefit from time in bottle, but it feels as though it’s going mature at a very slow rate despite its youthful appeal now. Drink it over the coming 20 years. WA 97 (11/2024): This is an outstanding wine from Le Ragnaie. Showing unescapable mineral definition, the 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V. V. sees fruit sourced from the estate's oldest vines, which were planted in 1968 on sandstone soils (with quartz inclusions) at 600 meters above sea level. The bouquet is bright and fragrant, but the wine also has a salty or harder edge that gives it good runway to age and evolve. I love its elegantly built structure.
VM 96 (11/2024): The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino V.V. entices with a darkly floral blend of wilted violets and stone dust, giving way to pine shavings, spiced orange peels and crushed blackberries. It's elegant, with silken textures and polished red and black fruits that ride a wave of fresh acidity as violet inner florals amass toward the close. An air of potpourri resonates above a bed of fine-grained tannins as a bitter tinge of citrus-laced blackberry fades slowly. The 2020 V.V. is the most complete and classic wine from Le Ragnaie's lineup this year—in a word, spellbinding. (Drink between 2027-2038). Eric Guido. |

| VM 92+ (9/2024): The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino stands out amongst its peers, coming across as savory and minerally intense, with a cascade of florals up front joined by wild herbs and blackberries. This is surprisingly soft and supple within, seaming to coast along the palate with polished red and blue fruits. A liquid violet concentration builds tension within. Spicy and structured, the 2021 forms up through the finish, flexing its tannic muscle. Licorice and inner rose notes slowly fade. Bottle age should bring more flesh to the palate.
