Collector Alert: Torbreck’s Benchmark Barossa Reds

Torbreck has long stood as one of the Barossa Valley’s defining estates—an address where old-vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Mataro achieve a depth, power, and aromatic lift that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. Today, we’re thrilled to offer a fresh allocation of these benchmark Australian reds, including several of the estate’s most sought-after bottlings.
From the lush, dark-fruited generosity of Woodcutter’s Shiraz to the finely sculpted, Rhône-inspired elegance of The Steading, Torbreck captures the soul of the Barossa with uncommon finesse. These are wines built on ancient soils and gnarled, dry-grown vines—many over a century old—whose naturally low yields create remarkable concentration and detail.
For collectors, this offer includes limited bottles of The Factor, one of the Barossa’s true modern icons. The Factor delivers the intensity, richness, and depth that have made Torbreck a global benchmark for top-tier Shiraz. It’s a wine built for the long haul, with structure and complexity that will reward those willing to give it time in the cellar.
Whether you’re looking to replenish your cellar with bold, ageworthy reds or discover the energy and richness that define Torbreck’s style, this is a rare chance to secure some of Australia’s most celebrated wines. Quantities are limited, especially on the flagship releases.
The following are the wines remaining from the offer sent on Monday, December 8, 2025. Please enter your desired quantities and click the 'Add' button.

WA 95 (2/2009): The Shiraz for the 2006 The Descendant is sourced from a single vineyard and co-fermented with 8% Viognier. It was aged for 18 months in seasoned French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it emits an expressive, sexy perfume of violets, wood smoke, black pepper, espresso, blueberry, and chocolate. Full-bodied, on the palate, this voluptuous effort has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, tons of spicy black fruits, enough ripe tannin to evolve for a decade, and 60-second finish. It should provide pleasure from 2016 through 2036. VM 93+ (10/2008): Inky violet. Powerfully scented, brooding aromas of boysenberry, cherry compote, licorice and smoky minerals; aeration brings up brighter black raspberry and blackberry qualities, which carry onto the palate. Broad and deeply concentrated, presenting a seductive array of sweet dark berry liqueur flavors and a late jolt of tangy minerals. Clings tenaciously to the palate and finishes with lingering blackberry and candied plum flavors. This really deserves some patience. WS 73 (12/2008): Strange, green, bitter flavors turn gamy on the finish. Shiraz and Viognier. 900 cases made. |

WA 94 (2/2009): The 2006 Les Amis is 100% Grenache aged in new oak for 18 months. Purple-colored, it exhibits an enthralling nose of smoky oak, roses, garrigue, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry. It conceals enough ripe tannin to support 5-7 years of additional cellaring. This layered, lengthy effort should be at its best from 2012 to 2024. VM 94 (10/2009): (100% grenache) Deep, vivid ruby. Strikingly perfumed bouquet of black raspberry, cherry pie, incense and anise. Lush and creamy, with deep, sweet red fruit and bitter cherry flavors complemented by notes of exotic candied flowers and licorice. Supple tannins frame the expansive fruit and add definition to the long, focused, spicy finish. WS 92 (2/2010): Ripe and generous, offering a supple mouthful of cherry, black pepper, bacon and spice flavors that rocket through a layer of fine tannins. The spices, including cardamom and anise seed, come through strongly on the finish. Drink now through 2017. 300 cases made. |

VM 94 (8/2006): Inky violet. Explosively aromatic nose offers the full range of red and black fruits, along with notes of candied violet, cinnamon, mace, star anise and exotic tobacco. Hugely concentrated and velvety but also remarkably precise and energetic, with very pure flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, plum preserve and kirsch Ripe, explosive and deep on the back; as rich and sweet as this is, it's not at all thick or cloying. A real balancing act of power and purity. The tannins are completely buffered by the wine's sheer concentration of fruit. I'd give this at least five years of cellaring to gain in complexity. As impressive to my palate as the superb 2002 version. WA 99 (10/2006): The estate’s flagship cuvee is the virtually perfect 2003 Run Rig. Made from 8 separate Barossa vineyards (ranging in age from 94 to 158 years), it is primarily Shiraz with 4-5% co-fermented Viognier included in the blend. The wine was aged in French oak of which 60% is new. The sensational, inky/purple-tinged 2003 exhibits a stunningly sweet nose of blackberries, blueberries, litchi nuts, smoked meats, and a hint of apricots. Elegant yet super-powerful, rich, concentrated, and long, it is a tour de force in winemaking as well as a modern classic example of Barossa Shiraz. It should drink well for 20-25 years. |

The Laird Shiraz (1.5 L) Lightly Scuffed Label |
$1,800 |

| WA 100 (12/2010): The Laird is Powell’s new baby, coming from a single 5 acre / 2 hectare vineyard of Shiraz in the Marananga sub-region planted in the 1960s that recently became available for contracting. This is a very different wine from Run Rig. What is most striking about it is the combination of power and elegance in this first vintage, coming from a very good year in the Barossa. Matured for 3 years in new Dominique Laurent “Magic Casks” (Troncais French oak barriques with thicker staves designed for the long aging of Shiraz), 2005 The Laird gives a deep garnet color and pronounced nose that shows savory and spice notes over the fruit, with aromas of hung meat, Peking duck, fertile loam, underbrush, tree bark, anise, cumin seed, menthol, dried roses and lavender over warm black cherries, crush blackberries and fruit cake. The tight-knit, full-bodied palate is very fine with a high level of silt-like tannins and crisp acid running through the concentrated fruit and savory flavors, finishing very long with lingering earth and spice notes. At 14.8% declared alcohol, this is by no means one of the biggest wines in the Barossa, but it is most certainly one of the best. It’s an absolute joy to drink now but it is recommended readers give it 4-5 years more in bottle to soften and marry and enjoy it to 2030+. |
