| WA 95 (10/2020): The 2019 Bernkasteler Lay Auslese is clear and refined in its concentration and precision, revealing a deep and coolish flint aroma. Round and lush on the palate, with very delicate and refined acidity, this is a creamy-textured Auslese in the etherial Prüm style, with a piquant, vital and crunchy finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

| WA 91 (6/2009): Musk melon, peach, black currant, and botrytis-inflected suggestions of caramel, white raisin, and pungent spice fill the nose from Prum’s 2007 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese. A considerable measure of yeasty and CO2-engendered aromas needs to clear off before this really begins to show its formidable stuff. Creamy in texture and quite unlike the corresponding Spatlese, it displays more than enough energy, concentration, and sheer length, but needs time to harmonize and focus. |

| WA 92 (12/2010): The Prum 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese mingles spiced apple, papaya, pink grapefruit, cassis, and white raisin in a lush, creamily-textured, pungently botrytis-tinged performance full-throated from nose through peacock’s finishing flourish, and hard to beat for sheer diversity and audacity of fruit. If you’re looking for nuance of for characteristics that might be described as in any sense “mineral,” then perhaps in a dozen years you’ll find them here, otherwise search elsewhere. But in reality this is a wine that deserves a long time in the cellar and is apt to retain and add to its present virtues over a 30 year period. |

| VM 92 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese is rather shy. The palate tingles with tangerine, ripe, rounded, aromatic, and full of tangy, zesty, sweet, ripe citrus. Wonderfully expressive on the mid-palate and with a subtle finish, full of those vivid aromatics. Anne Krebiehl. |

| WA 94 (6/2009): The Prum 2007 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Gold Capsule smells so intensely of pink grapefruit, mint, and cassis that – I pray the Prums will forgive this inevitable if sacrilegious comparison! – I imagine Scheurebe. Honey and caramel on the creamy, delicate palate offer counterpoint with the wine’s luscious citrus and cooling, invigorating herbal notes. In conclusion, this practically explodes with a shower of citrus, herbal essences, salt, and crushed stone. |

WA 95 (3/2016): The gold-capsuled 2014 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese GK (AP #18) represents a botrytis selection and offers highly delicate fruit and flinty-slate aromas, where tropical fruit aromas mingle with wet stone flavors. The attack on the palate is racy and piquant; the wine is complex and very pure, highly elegant and finesse-full, yet intense and concentrated, with ripe pineapple flavors and a pure, salty, very mineral finish. This is highly delicate Riesling with a complex terroir expression.
VM 95 (11/2016): This non-auction gold-capsule bottling delivers a multifaceted nose featuring candied lime peel, apple and quince jellies, heliotrope and an intriguing meld of yeasty stale bread, florally honeyed and subtly truffly manifestations of botrytis. The creamy, expansive palate reprises all of the aforementioned elements, but also introduces generous parallel juiciness of fresh apple and lime. Displaying wonderful lift and delicacy, the lusciously lingering finish is transparent to stony, crystalline and floral nuances. David Schildknecht |

| VM 92 (6/2017): This 8.5 percent alcohol bottling features site-typical prominence of lemon and grapefruit with bittersweet suggestions of citrus peels, cassis and huckleberry. Lithe and polished, it finishes with stimulating brightness, rapier penetration, and prodigious persistence. Sweetness is the last thing you’re apt to think about while drinking it. Time will certainly bring further complexity, though crystalline and alkaline stony notes already lend nearly limitless intrigue. David Schildknecht. |

WA 94 (4/2013): A yeasty, smoky prickle as well as the effect of dissolved CO2 causes the nose to wrinkle from a glass of Prum’s 2011 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese A.P. #18, but behind that are heliotrope and lily-of-the-valley along with ripe apple, pear and melons that in turn inform a delicate, subtly creamy palate of striking transparency to stony, crystalline, alkaline and smoky black tea and liquid floral nuances. This shimmers and excites even as it soothes in a lingering, uplifting, glowing finish. It will certainly merit attention for the better part of a half century.
VM 91+ (1/2013): Pale golden yellow. Refined aromas of ripe peach, mango and acacia honey. Creamy and glossy in texture, with a glazed apricot flavor infused with sweet herbal spice. Richer and denser than the spatlese but not obviously better, and long on the finish. |

WA 95 (2/2015): The 2013 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a noble sweet, very fine aroma of wet and flinty stones intertwined with grapefruit and lemon aromas. Lovely sweet and intense, but also delicate on the palate, this medium to full-flavored 7.5% alcohol wine reveals a great elegance and finesse and finishes with delicately juicy, grapefruit aromas. (I tasted AP number #15 14.)
VM 93+ (3/2015): Pale golden yellow. Sublime aromas of apricot, white lime and brown spices. In spite of the rich, glossy nectarine fruit, refreshing acidity makes this Auslese appear light and superbly elegant. With a lively spice character animating the long, sweet, delicate finish, this is my favorite of the standard Ausleses. Joel B. Payne |

A vein of fresh apple and grapefruit is tapped to introduce unexpected primary juiciness into the layers of confitured, lightly torrefied and desiccated fruit concentrates, and the extraordinarily long, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish also affords glimpses of smoky and stony mineral nuances rare in a Riesling this rich. There’s no youthful reticence to this Wehlener! The share of botrytis here was minimal, according to Katharina Prüm. David Schildknecht. |

WA 96 (4/2018): The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is clear, fine and subtle yet concentrated, with vegetal and ripe fruit aromas. Rich, round and piquant, this is an intense and densely woven Auslese (AP 14 17) with a long, tensioned and refreshing mineral finish that lifts the sweet fruit. Gorgeous but made for another decade.
JS 96 (6/2018): The 2016 Goldkapsel Auslese from the Wehlener Sonnenuhr is going to be a magical wine in the fullness of time. The bouquet is pure, still fairly primary and utterly classical in depth and proportion, delivering a superb constellation of white cherries, delicious apple, a touch of the yellow plum to come in time, a gorgeous signature of slate minerality and a topnote of apple blossoms. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and precise, with lovely depth, ripe, vibrant acids, great focus and grip and a very, very long, pure and energetic finish. This will need at least a decade in the cellar to start to stir, but it will be a great Goldkapsel once it is ready to drink and will live for a very, very long time! Great juice. 2026-2085+. |

| VM 93 (6/2017): Apple and quince are coolingly laced with mint and wintergreen (decidedly reminiscent of the corresponding Bernkasteler) but also, quite unexpectedly, joined by banana, mango and muskmelon for an unusually exotic expression of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that is as luscious in the mouth as it is heady on the nose. Lily and heliotrope contribute to the wine’s head-turning aromatic intensity and their inner-mouth perfume to the allure of a subtly creamy palate. For all of its unusually advanced sense of ripeness for a Kabinett, this projects remarkable delicacy and a focused sense of stone, fruit and floral interface in its lingering finish. (The Prüms are fond of observing that their Wehlener Sonnenuhr is usually slower to show itself than others of their wines, but that certainly isn’t the case with this 2015.) David Schildnecht. |

VM 93 (1/2018): Cheesy fermentative overtones give way to a site-typical amalgam of fresh apple garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope. This is another of those Prüm Kabinetts that is watery in a positive sense of that word, combining watercolor-like transparency and wash of flavor with delicacy and refreshment. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal. (Drink between 2017-2038). David Schildknecht.
JD 90 (5/2019): Lot of citrus, sweet lime, and mint emerge from the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett, which is certainly a good value at the price. Medium-bodied, pure, beautifully balanced, with an off-dry, juicy style on the palate, it’s a joy to drink. |

| WA 93 (10/2020): The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a deep and flinty, stony and herbal bouquet that needs some time to open up. Remarkably deep and complex, round and textured on the palate, this is a charming, mouth-filling and intense WSU with serious grip and length. Still far from being evolved, this is a richer, more complex Kabinett that will start to impress in 5-10 years. Stimulatingly salty on the finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

| WA 91 (2/2012): Emphasizing the bitter side of the vanilla bean as well as toasted nuts and cyanic apple pit, the Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #14 thereby generates a fascinating contrast with its apple jelly and honey richness. Alkaline and wet stone notes - beginning already in the nose - enhance that contrast. Nut oils, honey and apple reprise in a lusciously lingering finish. Less charming, refreshing, exuberant, or focused in finish than the corresponding Graacher, this Wehlener will almost certainly need a longer time to show its true potential; but one can rest assured based on one of Germany’s most certifiable track-records that at least a quarter century of pleasure is in the offing here. (I did not have opportunity to taste the corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #26.) |

| VM 91 (6/2017): Apple and quince are garlanded with honeysuckle and heliotrope in another supportively sweet, feather-light yet lush Bert Selbach Spätlese. The vivid fruit juiciness and inner-mouth floral perfume persist on a long finish that is at once soothing and refreshing. David Schildknecht. |

WA 94 (4/2018): The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP 23 17) is still discreet, floral and finely mineral rather than fruity on the nose compared to the other 2016 Spätlesen. Lush, piquant and juicy on the palate, this is a firm but sensual Sonnenuhr with remarkable finesse, lightness and lingering salinity. Tasted March 2018.
JD 92 (5/2019): Revealing a hint of green in its color, the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is rocking stuff that delivers mouthwatering notes of sweet peach, sugared citrus, and mint in a medium-bodied, off-dry, balanced style. It’s one of the more fruit forward efforts here yet stays vibrant, clean, and balanced. |

| VM 94 (1/2020): Dusty and yeasty notes do not interfere significantly with a transmission of fresh but ultra-concentrated pear and quince, laced with heliotrope and honeysuckle. A welcome influx of grapefruit serves for brightness and zest on an otherwise creamy as well as delicate palate, leading to a finish impeccably balanced in sweetness and vibrantly as well as lusciously persistent. (There is also an auctioned bottling of Sonnenuhr Auslese – A.P. #20 – which I have not tasted.) (Drink between 2019-2050). David Schildknecht. |

| WA 95 (10/2020): The 2019 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is very clear and spicy on the concentrated, intensely aromatic and flinty/stony nose. | WA 96 (10/2020): The 2019 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese (Gold Capsule) is precise and fresh in its concentrated yet delicate fruit and lemon aromas. Round and intense yet delicate on the palate, this is a dense, piquant and salty, vital and very stimulating Auslese based on early botrytized grapes. The concentration and sweetness is still dominant here and asks for patience. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

| VM 94 (6/2017): This projects another dimension of clarity, levity and understated complexity from the already impressive Rieslings that preceded it in the 2015 Prüm lineup. Honeysuckle, heliotrope and apple blossom perfumes atop ripe apple and quince capture the attention on the nose, then segue to a near-weightless, subtly creamy, yet generously juicy palate. Wet stone and bittersweet, smoky hickory and walnut oils serve for counterpoint on a prodigiously prolonged, luscious finish. (Drink between 2017-2040). David Schildknecht. |
