Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru |

BH 94 (4/2012): This is much more animale in character than the Bressandes with a somber if highly complex nose featuring dark berry fruit, stone, earth and underbrush nuances. There is an overt muscularity to the big-bodied, intense and robust flavors that possess a most admirable amount of structure-buffering dry extract that imparts a velvety texture to the borderline chewy and terrifically persistent finish. A classic Clos du Roi that is built for the long-term. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! VM 92-95 (2/2012): Bright ruby red. Perfumed, high-pitched aromas of cherry, minerals, spices and licorice: Cellarmaster Christophe Bouillot describes this as the domain's "upstairs Corton," while the Bressandes is their downstairs version. Precise and fine-grained in the mouth, with lovely mineral and violet high notes lifting the black cherry and licorice flavors. Really saturates the palate without leaving any impression of undue weight. Very long on the aftertaste. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2012): Good ruby-red. Blackberry and chocolate on the nose and palate. Sweet, lush and pure, combining a rather gentle texture and very good lift. Suave, fine-grained Volnay with ripe tannins and lovely lingering purple fruits. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92 (11/2018): The 2015 Volnay Caillerets Clos des 60 Ouvrées 1er Cru is tightly coiled at first, yet precise and focused, gradually unfolding to reveal disarming pure dark cherries, Dorset plum and light undergrowth aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with layers of sappy black and red fruit and a fine line of acidity, and quite mineral-driven with a lovely touch of piquancy on the detailed finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin. |

| VM 92+ (3/2015): Medium red. Sexy, inviting aromas of redcurrant, minerals, smoke and rose petal. Juicy and fine-grained but youthfully imploded, with very good acidity giving this large-scaled wine excellent delineation. Finishes very long and sweet, with a boatload of powerful but ripe tannins. Offers superb potential but will require considerable patience. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (1/2014): (from vines next to the wall by Grands Echezeaux; 40% whole cluster) Relatively heavy reduction renders the nose unreadable. There is excellent richness, size, weight and power to the medium weight plus flavors that brim with mouth coating dry extract that buffers well the firm tannic spine on the strikingly long finish. This is austere but not really rustic and should amply reward mid to long-term cellaring. Drink 2027+. VM 91-93 (1/2014): (50% vendange entier): Bright medium red. Candied red cherry and redcurrant aromas are accented by pepper and fresh herbs. Juicy, spicy and bright, showing lovely cut and energy to the red fruit and mineral flavors. The youthfully firm tannins are a bit tough today but the finish displays attractive floral lift. |

WA 88-90 (6/2015): The 2012 Bourgogne comes from two parcels in “Les Pressonnier” and “Les Grand Champs” and sees no new oak. It has a captivating bouquet of brambly black fruit that is very well defined. The palate is well balanced with sappy black fruit on the entry, nicely judged acidity and a natural, pastille-like finish. This is uncomplicated but astutely crafted, downright delicious Burgundy. VM 88-90 (1/2014): A great introduction to the vintage here, Bachelet's 2012 Bourgogne is endowed with superb depth and purity in its class. Red stone fruits, plums, spices, menthol and licorice inform this striking, expressive beauty. There is a surprising amount of structure for a Bourgogne. (Drink between 2014-2020). Antonio Galloni. BH 87-89 (1/2014): There is a gentle touch of wood to the spicy red and dark berry fruit aromas that convey a real sense of earth that carries over to the impressively rich and utterly delicious flavors that despite the obvious ripeness retain a fine sense of energy and freshness on the lingering finish. This is a really good Bourgogne and absolutely worth a look. (Drink starting 2016). |

| BH 89-91 (1/2014): (from vines averaging between 60 and 70 years of age.) There is enough wood to be easily perceptible though not so much as to impede an appreciation of the spicy dark berry fruit, earth and underbrush suffused nose. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the abundance of palate coating dry extract that also does a fine job of buffering the moderately firm tannic spine on the ever-so-slightly rustic finish. A fine Gevrey villages. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

VM 95+ (3/2015): Full medium red. Cool, aristocratic aromas of cherry, pepper, espresso and medicinal herbs complicated by notes of game, smoky minerals and crushed stone. Utterly seamless on the palate, showing an exotic fruit quality to the perfumed flavors of red berries and flowers. Boasts wonderful energy for 2012: this really glistens on the palate and on the rising back end. A wine of great definition and grip, finishing with noble, smooth tannins and superb sappy length. VM 94-96 (1/2014): A wine of endless layers of flavor, the 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze, wraps around the palate with gorgeous depth and pure texture. Sweet tobacco, wild flowers, new leather and succulent red cherries all blossom on the close. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters gives the Bèze gorgeous aromatic lift that works as a counterpoint to some of the richer flavors. An exotic melange of blue and black-toned fruit, violets, spices and menthol all blossom on the finish. I very much like the intensity here. BH 91-94 (4/2014): There is plenty of floral character to the markedly spicy mix of very fresh red berry fruit liqueur aromas that are trimmed in a background application of oak. The cool, pure and restrained middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality that adds lift to the delicious, round and impressively long finish. I like the underlying material and while this is a good deal less complex than several wines in the range, my score offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2024+. WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a perfumed, floral bouquet with scents of black cherries, creme de cassis and minerals that is very attractive, even at this primal stage. The palate is medium-bodied with a firm, introspective opening and henceforth it never really goes out to entertain: broody and saturnine, piqued that it is being viewed so prematurely. Like the Mazis-Chambertin, it needs just a little more warmth of personality to filter through and indeed, returning to my sample after just three of four minutes aeration, there are some interesting spicy notes surfacing towards the finish. Give this grand cru five or six years in bottle. |

| BH 90 (1/2015): A very pretty, fresh and cool nose of ripe red berries and soft spice notes is more deeply pitched than its 2012 counterpart. The elegant middle weight flavors possess a graceful mouth feel along with good richness before terminating in a balanced and lingering finish. The phenolically mature tannins are well-integrated and this wonderfully complex effort should both drink well young but also reward a few years of bottle age too. Recommended. Drink 2016+. | BH 91 (1/2015): ( a 1 ha blend of Groseilles, Baudes, Noirots and Gruenchers, which interestingly are all bunched together, geographically speaking.) A similar if more elegant and more complex nose leads to cool, delicious and well-delineated middle weight flavors that possess excellent verve on the lightly mineral-inflected, balanced and dusty finish. This is very Chambolle in basic character yet more powerful than it usually is. This too is recommended. Drink 2018+. Outstanding! |

| BH 92 (1/2015): (from a .66 ha parcel.) This is ever so slightly more aromatically refined with its nose of plum, violets and red and dark currant liqueur scents. There is a very round, lush and seductive quality to the mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors that possess a silky palate impression on the well-balanced finish that delivers very fine depth and length. In sum, this tender yet entirely serious effort is really very pretty. Worth considering. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! |

VM 90 (3/2015): Bright, dark red. Sweet red berries, nutty oak and subtle soil tones on the nose. Fat, sweet and spicy, showing good fullness for village wine. Savory, serious Volnay with good vinosity and density and a saline complexity. Finishes with broad, building, ripe tannins and good savory persistence. Antonio Galloni. BH 88 (4/2014): (Entirely from 5 different 1ers). An earthy and distinctly ripe nose of cassis, plum and soft floral aromas gives way to equally earthy middle weight flavors where once again the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained. The finale is firm without being rustic though there is enough youthful austerity to notice. This should reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2018+. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2014): Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off. Antonio Galloni. |

BH 89-91 (1/2014): This is also sufficiently reduced as to negate an evaluation of the fruit. By contrast there is clearly more volume and concentration to the medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the balanced, palate coating and lingering finish that offers markedly better depth. (Drink starting 2018). VM 89-91 (1/2014): Dark red cherries, plums, spices and wild flowers are woven together in the 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes. This is an especially tense, energetic Mes Favorites built on perfume and freshness rather than the more intense style of years past. There is a lot to like here. (Drink between 2016-2027). Antonio Galloni. WA 85-87 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes comes from the oldest vines around 70 years in age. It has a clean fresh bouquet with strawberry and raspberry scents laced with floral notes that should fill out by the time of bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red cherry and strawberry fruit on the entry. It is more harmonious than the nose on Burguet’s other cuvees, while the finish offers good structure if not quite the fireworks I was expecting. |

| BH 91 (4/2015): There are floral and herbal tea characters suffusing the black cherry and earth aromas. The textured, intense and well-detailed middle weight flavors exude a fine minerality on the overtly austere, persistent finish. This is also quite serious and will clearly need most of a decade of bottle age to arrive at its peak. (Drink starting 2020). |

| WA 90 (6/2015): The 2012 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Bousselots has a mature bouquet, plenty of sous-bois notes: black truffle and Ceps and a sprig of mint. | BH 93 (1/2015): (from vines planted in 1922.) There is a highly appealing freshness to the wonderfully spiced aromas of red and dark currant, plum and violet suffused nose. The strikingly refined middle weight flavors possess the grand class that makes Romanee St. Vivant inimitable and the balanced finish should allow this to age effortlessly. If there is a nit it's that the complexity isn't at the level I usually find with this wine though in fairness it's still a baby. Drink 2022+. |

BH 92 (4/2015): This is quite ripe though it stops short of being surmature with its nose of plum liqueur, mocha, black cherry and earth aromas. There is exceptionally good richness to the very suave and succulent medium weight flavors that are supported by phenolically mature tannins on the mouth coating finish. This is a big and overtly powerful wine yet it's not especially rustic or austere. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! VM 90 (3/2015): (these 2012s were bottled in September of 2014): Good dark red. Wild, very ripe aromas of raspberry, dried flowers and wild herbs. Dark berry flavors display a juicy character along with a note of chocolatey ripeness. An outperformer for this cru, finishing with substantial but tasty tannins and lovely persistence. I underestimated this wine last year. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Croix Noires has a feminine, quite elegant bouquet with scents of raspberry preserve, redcurrant jus and light mushroom scents. The palate is sweet and composed on the entry. There is a noticeable saline element to this Pommard that shows rigidity and structure towards the slightly clipped finish. |

| VM 92 (2/2019): Medium yellow. Very sexy scents of ripe stone fruits, minerals, clove and menthol, plus a suggestion of redcurrant and a Batard-like toasty nuance. Large-scaled, plush and powerful but also quite fine-grained, with salty minerality and a repeating menthol element carrying through to a palate-staining finish. There's lovely supporting acidity here for such a rich, ripe wine. A touch of sweetness gives this complex, chewy premier cru some early appeal but there's much more to come here. (I should note that my first bottle showed a deeper yellow color. It was sweet and silky but displayed more evolved notes of ripe apricot, marzipan and white chocolate, as well as a balsamic element, almost certainly due to a bad cork or cork seal. Veronique Drouhin admitted that her family had some cork problems in 2012.) Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 90 (1/2015): The reduction this displayed last year from barrel is still present even if there is less of it. There is good freshness and energy to the supple and well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced finish where a trace of austerity is present. This possesses outstanding depth and length for its level and while the reduction is a concern my score assumes that it will ultimately dissipate with a few years of bottle age. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! |

BH 93-95 (1/2014): The quality of this wine has skyrocketed over the past few vintages; while it was always very good, it has now become one of the most consistent performers in the Faiveley portfolio. There is quite a bit of wood influence at present and it fights a bit with the spicy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit plenty of earth and game character. The impressively scaled and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess an opulent yet entirely serious mouth feel before culminating in a balanced, explosively and tremendously persistent finish. This is a bit woody today yet the underlying material is such that it seems all but evident that it will successfully integrate the oak in time. Drink 2032+. Don't miss! VM 93-96 (1/2014): Bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and graphite. Dense, sappy and energetic, offering Outstanding depth to its soil-driven black cherry and saline flavors. Delivers an uncanny combination of chewy texture and verve. Finishes with palate-staining length and lift, as tactile as a solid. A great vin de terroir for the cellar. |

VM 92 (3/2015): Medium red. Aromas of raspberry, woodsmoke and flowers complemented by sexy oak tones. Supple and velvety, with inviting flavors of strawberry, raspberry, game and earth supported by smoky minerality. At once juicy and harmonious, finishing with sweet red fruits. (Drink between 2020-2030). Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (11/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is a little shy after its recent bottling, opening in the glass with aromas of wild berries and orange rind that are framed by a generous application of new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, fine-boned and elegant, with lively acids, fine and powdery tannins and a precise finish. This is never going to challenge the lovely 2016 rendition, but by contrast, it will show all its cards with minimal bottle age. |

VM 91-94 (2/2014): Good bright, deep red. Sexy, vibrant aromas of raspberry, crushed stone, red licorice and smoky minerality. Densely packed and sweet, with noteworthy blackberry and menthol intensity enlivened by smoky minerality and flowers. Very youthful wine with spice and licorice flavors extending the finish. A superb showing. BH 90-92 (1/2014): (A 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines). A brooding and pungently earthy nose mixes dark berry aromas with humus, underbrush and sauvage notes. There is very fine richness to the suave and quite round medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of vibrancy on the lingering finish. This is finer than the Porrets but less powerful. A qualitative choice. Drink 2022+. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers comes from 1.8-hectare parcel populated by young and old, 15- and 70-year-old vines. It has a broody, stony, undergrowth-tinged bouquet that unfolds with aeration whereupon it reveals evocative estuarine scents. The palate has a wonderful sense of symmetry and focus, if not quite the length of Gouge’s fellow 2012s. Therefore this may constitute early drinking albeit at a satisfyingly high level. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru comes from the family’s 0.60-hectare parcel whose oldest vines are approaching retirement. It has a very refined, elegant bouquet that is actually more like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant at the moment. There are lovely scents of orange-blossom and quince emerging with time. The palate is well-balanced with a rounded, harmonious entry. It is silky smooth at the moment with a fine thread of acidity. It remains sedate, distant even but very sophisticated and the oak is very well assimilated towards the finish. Excellent. BH 91-94 (4/2014): (The Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) In much the same fashion as the Pezerolles this is presently very toasty and it's enough where the wood pushes the spicy black pinot fruit to the background if not completely hides it. The supple and very round large-scaled flavors possess excellent concentration and an intense minerality on the powerful and moderately austere finish. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt in this case because the wood does not alter the texture or sweeten the finish and thus there is a good chance that this will ultimately harmonize. Drink 2024+. |

BH 91-93 (1/2014): This is also boisterously spicy with a full complement of Asian-style spice nuances that add plenty of breadth to the essence of black currant scents. There is exceptionally good richness to the full-bodied and very lush medium weight flavors that completely coat the palate with dry extract on the balanced and intense finish that is shaped by admirably fine-grained tannins. This opulent effort is lovely and should also be approachable young if desired. (Drink starting 2020). WA 91-93 (12/2013): The 2012 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Clos des Reas, Michel Gros’s famous monopole to the south of Vosne-Romanee village, has a complex, mineral driven bouquet with black rather than red fruit, touches of gingerbread and marmalade loitering with intent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, fine tannins and good purity of fruit. It is harmonious and focused with a gentle build to what feels like a structured, saline finish reminiscent of the sea. This is a very fine Clos des Reas: one of the finest and perhaps overlooked premier crus of the appellation. |

BH 92 (1/2015): Here the exuberant and wonderfully pure nose speaks of floral and both dark and red berry fruit aromas that display spicy top notes. There is good vibrancy and detail to the lilting and lacy middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the balanced and saline-inflected finish. I very much like the seductive mouth feel as well as the fine complexity on the impressively persistent finish. Lovely juice. (Drink starting 2022). VM 91 (3/2015): Moderately saturated medium red. Ripe strawberry and raspberry aromas are complicated by underbrush and dried flowers. Sweet, supple and fine-grained, with the red fruit flavors nicely framed by bright, harmonious acidity and complicated by savory minerality. Finishes with subtle salinity and lovely balance. VM 91 (11/2014): Bright medium red. Ripe, alluring aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, raspberry and earth. Sweet, fine-grained and enveloping, showing lovely energy and density and still holding its fruit in reserve. Finishes fresh and firm-edged, with full, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. (Drink between 2021-2031). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90? (1/2015): A spicy and notably ripe nose features aromas of dark pinot fruit, red currant, blood orange and an abundance of spice elements that include anise and sandalwood. There is an elegant mouth feel to the luscious and generously proportioned middle weight flavors that possess a velvety texture, all wrapped in a beautifully complex finish. If there is a concern though it's that this very firmly structured effort feels as though it may turn secondary relatively early in its evolution. As such I underscore my concern with a question mark because it will certainly require more than 8 years of bottle age to resolve the tannins yet the fruit may no longer be there. WA 92-94 (12/2013): The 2012 Echezeaux Grand Cru has a sensual, expressive, kaleidoscopic bouquet with wonderful vibrant blackberry, cassis and blueberry scents infused with minerals. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine, sappy red berry fruit, a citric thread of racy acidity that neatly offsets the extravagant finish. There is plenty to savour on the vibrant, vivacious Echezeaux. VM 92-94 (2/2014): (from Les Rouges; like the Grands-Echezeaux, this is aging in 30% new oak): Bright dark red. Dark raspberry, bitter chocolate, violet and pungent graphite minerality on the nose. Juicy, spicy and youthfully imploded, with powerful spine to its intense dark fruit and mineral flavors. Its sappy, building finish saturates the palate with saline minerality. Distinctly grand cru Echezeaux. BH 92-94 (4/2014): (from Les Rouges du Bas that is worked by horse because it is so steep). A spicy and well-layered nose of dark berries, cassis, earth and game nuances are all framed in just enough wood to notice. There is a beguiling velvety mouth feel to the round and supple yet remarkably well-concentrated big-bodied flavors that possess impressive intensity on the palate coating and notably firm finish where the tannins are clearly present. This is a big Ech that will need all of 15 years to arrive at its full majority. dRINK 2027+. |

BH 91-94 (4/2014): A slightly riper and more obviously animale infused nose features notes of red berries, wood, earth and plenty of humus character. There is outstanding mid-palate density to the less obviously mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess good focus and power on the impressively persistent and beautifully complex finale. This possesses a lovely sense of harmony and punch as well as very ripe supporting tannins. (Drink starting 2024). VM 91-94 (1/2014): Good bright, deep red. Red cherry, stony minerals, rose petal and a suggestion of chocolate mint on the nose; reminded me of a slightly earthier version of a Clos Saint-Jacques. Densely packed, saline and intense, with terrific energy and a restrained sweetness to the flavors of red fruits and minerals. A lovely precise, perfumed midweight with a slowly mounting finish offering a strong impression of soil character. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93-95 (1/2014): The 2012 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs impresses for its pure texture. Silky, generous and enveloping, the 2012 flows with the essence of black cherries, plums, savory herbs and wild flowers, all finely-knit and impeccably balanced. This is one of the more polished wines in the range. Today, it is absolutely singing. Antonio Galloni. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs is the 0.57-hectare monopole of Lafarge from an average of 80-year-old vines. Despite coaxing it remains stubbornly reticent on the nose, coquettishly revealing sea cave scents, perhaps a suggestion of what is to come with bottle age. The palate is more expressive with silky tannins, very pure red berry fruit, fine mineralite and a sophisticated, focused finish that lingers in the mouth. This has a wonderful weightless quality to it. Very classy. BH 88-91 (4/2014): (from 50+ year old vines; a monopole of the domaine.) This was quite firmly reduced but even so the underlying fruit does seem ripe. In the same fashion as the Mitans there is that beguiling sense of underlying tension to the beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess a refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a finish that is once again notably dry. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2019+. |

WA 93+ (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 La Grande Rue Grand Cru from Lamarche has a fabulous bouquet that gently unfurls in the glass: fine mineralite and tension, wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tensile tannin, crisp and poised, tightly wound and certainly needing several years to really show its mettle, but a great wine that is both understated yet intense. I'll be cautious now, but I would not be surprised to see this gain more favourable reviews in the future. BH 93 (1/2015): There is just enough wood to notice framing the red currant, black cherry and plum aromas that also display pretty floral and spice notes. There is fine concentration, power and punch to the refined and classy middle weight flavors that possess excellent intensity on the balanced, mouth coating, velvety and beautifully persistent finish. This too will need at least a decade plus of bottle age. Drink 2027+. |

BH 94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) A markedly floral nose exhibits a broad array of spice and red and dark berry fruit aromas that include plum, cassis and earth. There is excellent detail and plenty of punch to the mineral-inflected flavors that are shaped by ultra-refined tannins on the balanced and gorgeously persistent finish that is firm and serious but not really especially austere. This is seriously good with a lovely sense of harmony plus the perfect balance suggests that this will mature over a very long time. Drink 2027+. VM 93 (3/2015): (100% vendange entier; the village fruit was destemmed in 2012): Superripe aromas of red fruits, peony, mocha and balsamic spices. Plush, full and seamless, offering a pliant texture and terrific depth to the flavors of red fruits, dried spices, coffee and flowers. A tad warm on the back end but the dusty tannins melt into the wine's fruit. Less minerally than usual for this grand cru but there's no denying its richness and depth. This will need time to burn off some of its baby fat. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru has a classically lined, slightly herbaceous bouquet, perhaps even ferrous though well defined with dusky black fruit emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins, open-knit, a little herbaceous again but balanced, though I would prefer more flesh to come through on the bony finish. For me, it is not in the same class as Clos de Tart, but it is always intriguing to see how this wine develops and surprises in bottle. |

| VM 97 (4/2015): The 2012 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is simply magnificent. It's impossible not to stop for a moment to consider that this tasting is only at about the halfway point, and the wines are now into the stratosphere. Smoke, lavender, blood orange and plums saturate the palate in a rich, enveloping Burgundy that simply towers. Sensuality and power collide as the Beaux Monts shows off its pure pedigree. | BH 94 (1/2015): (from a .6 ha parcel situated two-thirds in Cruots and the rest in Champs Traversin.) Interestingly this is the spiciest wine in the range outside of the La Romanee that combines with a really lovely panoply of red and blue fruit and floral scents. There is excellent volume and mid-palate concentration to the fleshy and generous medium-bodied flavors that possess controlled power on the beautifully complex, balanced and long finish that is a bit less austere than that of the Reignots. This is also excellent and should drink well both young and fully mature. Drink 2027+. |

WA 92 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grand Vignes from Domaine Comte de Liger-Belair from has a crisp raspberry and blackcurrant-scented nose with nicely integrated oak and appreciable intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft, tart cherry opening. The acidity is nicely judged although it needs more complexity to come through in what feels like a straight-laced finish, which in fact it does with ten minutes in the glass. This improves with aeration, achieving more and more cohesion and precision, whilst there is a lovely edginess on the finish. VM 91 (4/2015): The 2012 Nuits St. Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes comes across as powerful, but also a bit wild. Cool streaks of minerality give the 2012 its sense of energy and invigorating freshness, but the 2013 remains a bit rough around the edges and rustic, qualities that are much less apparent in the 2013, which is the result of an additional year working with the site rather than a reflection of the vintage. Still, this is a solid effort across the board. Drink 2017-2032. Antonio Galloni. BH 91 (1/2015): (a monopole of the domaine.) A very pretty and airy nose of various red and dark berries that include cherry and currants also exhibits floral and earth hints. There is a subtle earthiness to the punchy and well-delineated middle weight flavors that offer fine length with good if not genuinely special complexity on the saline-inflected finish. Drink 2020+. |

| BH 88-91 (1/2014): This is also sufficiently reduced as to render the nose difficult to assess. The elegant middle weight flavors possess a silky mouth feel thanks to the very fine grain of the tannic backbone, all wrapped in a balanced, refreshing, clean and agreeably dry finish. A quality villages. (Drink starting 2019). |

| BH 91-94 (1/2014): (From a .27 ha parcel, most of which is young vines of 15+ years of age though there is a parcel approximating 15% of the total with <40 years of age, 50% whole cluster). There is a hint of tea-like nuances to the floral, spice, earth and sauvage notes on the broad-ranging dark berry fruit scents. The punchy and intense big-bodied flavors possess a subtle touch of minerality as well as fine concentration, all wrapped in a linear and wonderfully long finish. This isn't quite as ripe or complex but the length is seriously impressive. Note that patience will be required. Drink 2027+. |

BH 91-93 (1/2014): Here the wood is more discreet if not invisible as it sets off the earthy and quite somber mix of red and dark currant, spice and distinctly sauvage nuances. There is good energy and precision to the focused, intense and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a saline, moderately austere and impressively persistent finish. (Drink starting 2024). VM 91-93 (1/2014): Medium red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of red berries, flowers, earth and mint. Sweet, fine-grained and delicate, with a touch of herbs to the raspberry flavor. Not at all a fleshy style but prettier than usual for this wine, which tends to be severe in the early going. Finishes with very good length and cut. Stepehn Tanzer. |

VM 92 (11/2014): Healthy dark red. Wild, expressive nose combines raspberry, redcurrant, coffee, game and leather. Ripe, broad and sweet, but also with very good energy and thrust to the flavors of raspberry, milk chocolate and minerals. Really saturates the palate without leaving any impression of undue weight. The serious, ripe tannins should support slow development in bottle. "We're lucky always to have healthy levels of acidity in our Gevrey wines," noted Arnaud Mortet. A splendid village bottling. (Drink between 2019-2026). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2015): The expressive nose is compositionally similar to the straight Gevrey villages cuvée though here the aromas are slightly more complex. The medium weight flavors are also denser and more powerful with ample minerality and solid power that continues onto the palate coating, balanced and gorgeously long finish. This too is a very fine Gevrey villages and absolutely worth your attention. (Drink starting 2020). |

BH 97 (9/2023): Even at 11 years of age, there is relatively little evident development on the moderately restrained nose that displays good ripeness to the spiced green tea, hoisin, soy, anise, sandalwood and rose petal aromas. The cool, pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brim with both minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the still moderately firm but not hard shaping tannins on the youthfully austere and seriously persistent finish. While the nose reflects relatively little development, the finish is clearly more supple than it was when I first reviewed it because the dense but fine tannins make their presence felt but they don't dominate. In sum, despite the presence of plenty of volume and muscle, I would still describe the 2012 LT as a wine of finesse. In a word, brilliant. I would note that I tasted another bottle in 2023 that was reduced and bretty, indeed to the point where I did not finish my glass. I have no idea what might have happened but it would be correct to say that it did not resemble what I describe above at all. (Drink starting 2032). VM 97 (3/2016): A wine of almost raw, animal power, the 2012 La Tâche possesses stunning depth and intensity. Savory, floral and red citrus notes are pushed forward in an unusually virile, imposing La Tâche. Readers will have to be patient here, which will not surprise anyone familiar with the vintage. Still, I am taken aback by the wine’s embryonic youthfulness. (Drink between 2027-2062). Antonio Galloni. |

| BH 91 (1/2015): (a monopole of the domaine.) A brooding but well-layered nose combines notes of both red and dark currants, earth, floral tones and a hint of the sauvage. The rich and unusually supple medium-bodied flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a more refined finish than usual that delivers excellent length and only a trace of rusticity. I have said this several times recently but since 2009 this wine has become noticeably more interesting. Drink 2022+. |

WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet with fragrant wild strawberry, bergamot and forest floor that simmers with tension, subtle touches of cassis unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, slightly chalky tannins, over a layer of effervescent candied fruit – mandarin and apricot enriching the finish. This is such a pretty thing, surely destined to be irresistible in its youth. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Intensity and volume are the first things that come to mind in the 2012 Charmes-Chambertin. Layers if blue/blackish fruit blossom in a wine that is beautifully textured and vibrant throughout. I very much like the intensity here. I tasted two different barrels of Charmes, both in different states of their evolution, which is why generally speaking I feel the wines aren't fully formed just yet. BH 90-93 (1/2014): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) A beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. This wine has made a great deal of progress over the past 5 vintages or so and 2012 continues that trend. Drink 2022+. |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be. BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+. WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

BH 97 (1/2015): Discreet wood sets off a highly reserved and not quite as overtly ripe nose of dark berries, earth, and animale nuances that are trimmed in notes of spice, in particular anise, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. There is superbly good detail and focused power to the large-scaled flavors that also possess an Outstanding concentration of structure buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. This is a youthfully austere example of the genre that is presently quite compact and linear and thus will require at least a decade to flesh out and unwind but if you have the patience to wait it should be a great Chambertin in 20+ years. VM 97 (4/2015): Rousseau's 2012 Chambertin towers out of the glass. Sophisticated, finessed yet also powerful to the core, the 2012 Chambertin captures a compelling range of expressions. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, leather and cedar meld into a huge core of fruit in a dramatic, powerful Chambertin that will require considerable bottle age to show the full breadth of its potential. VM 96+ (3/2015): Healthy medium red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, black cherry, raspberry and smoky minerality. Hugely concentrated and sweet, but in a distinctly cooler and less expressive style than the Clos de Bèze. Sappy, saline wine with an incredible whiplash of a finish that leaves the palate saturated. Showing more red fruits than black in the early going, this is still an infant. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru has an ethereal bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry, orange blossom, hints of iodine and a subtle marine influence. The oak is more integrated at this stage than the Clos de Beze: a multi-dimensional bouquet whose secrets will only be revealed with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with supremely fine tannins. There is a brooding intensity here – a sense of completeness and harmony that is entrancing. It is not a powerful Chambertin nor even a multidimensional one - at the moment. But it is an effortless Chambertin that will age 20-30 years with little problem, bewitching everywhere it goes. |

WA 93-95 (12/2013): The 2012 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined bouquet with lively red berry fruit mixed with bergamot and fresh strawberry. It does not quite have the presence of say Bernard Dugat’s example: more introverted and bashful. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the opening, luscious red berries laced with orange zest and a hint of vanilla. The finish is nigh irresistible – full of vigor and tension with peach on the aftertaste. After a slow opening this finishes with grandeur and ambition. VM 92-94 (1/2014): Delicate and lithe on the palate, the 2012 Mazy-Chambertin is intensely perfumed and sensual. This is typical Mazy. High-toned aromatics and bright red fruits abound in a pretty, sophisticated Burgundy. Vibrant saline notes linger on the finish. BH 91-93 (1/2014): (from Mazis-Bas) There is enough reduction present to hide the underlying fruit though it does appear to be quite ripe. There is excellent punch and power to the big-bodied, intense and muscular flavors that brim with palate coating and tannin buffering dry extract on the pungently mineral-driven and beautifully long finish. This is very Mazis in character yet it's not especially rustic. Drink 2024+. |

BH 95 (1/2015): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) Deep ruby. This is also quite floral with excellent ripeness but also fine freshness to the plum, black cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. The supple but tautly muscular medium weight plus flavors possess a suave mouth feel thanks to the abundant dry extract that both coats the palate and buffers the very firm tannic spine on the highly persistent and imposingly powerful finish. Here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2027+. VM 94+ (3/2015): Dark, bright red. Red raspberry, licorice and menthol on the nose, complicated by notes of bitter chocolate and spices. Large-scaled and broad but less forthcoming today than the Chambolle 1er Cru, with dark raspberry, cherry and spice flavors showing a medicinal reserve and a touch of wildness. Shades toward blacker fruits on the dense, sappy back end, which features substantial ripe tannins and strong saline minerality. This very backward, powerful wine will need a long time to fully express itself. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 97+ (4/2013): (bottled in March of 2012; this and the Bonnes-Mares were aged in 35% new oak): Deep, bright red-ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, cherry and crushed limestone. Sharply chiseled, sappy and weightless in the mouth, with uncanny limestone cut to the flavors of raspberry, flowers and wild herbs. Spreads out insidiously to saturate and perfume the palate. Judging from this wine's tactile, bracing finish, endless perfume and firm tannic spine, it should gain in nuance for two or three decades in a cool cellar. WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially mild-mannered on the nose, unassuming at first but unfolding with each swirl of the glass to reveal scent of dark cherries, Dorset plum, blueberry and licorice. But it is very contained like the Bonnes-Mares, the bouquet strongly advising to return in a decade’s time. The palate is very well balanced with filigree tannins, brambly red berry fruit and a marine-influence from start to finish – hints of brine and seaweed; shucked oyster shell on the finish. This is a very accomplished, fascinating Musigny from de Vogue. BH 94-97 (1/2014): A gorgeously spicy nose is comprised of liqueur-like dark berry fruit scents that also display plenty of floral influence that includes notes of lavender, violet and, somewhat curiously, honeysuckle. There is Outstanding concentration and punch to the seductively textured and marvelously intense big-bodied flavors that are borderline robust as the supporting tannins are dense but refined. I really like the Zen-like sense of harmony to the explosively long finish that really stains the palate. In a word, terrific. Drink 2027+. Don't miss! |

WA 93 (8/2011): The 2009 Tempranillo is impressive. Dark red fruit, flowers and spices come to life in this rich, textured red. The aromas and flavors caress the palate with considerable richness and depth. The finish is long and striking for its purity. The Tempranillo was aged in 80% new barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. VM 91 (10/2011): Deep ruby. Candied cherry, flowers, woodsmoke and cured tobacco on the assertively perfumed nose. Deep, broad and velvety, with impressive depth and sweetness to its cherry and cassis flavors. Picks up spiciness and notes of vanilla and bitter chocolate with air and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering spiciness. I like this wine's balance. |

WA 96 (8/2015): Competing with Epoch's top-notch Tempranillo as the best example of the variety in California, Jensen's 2013 Tempranillo is a blockbuster that's not made in every vintage. Black cherries, currants, leather, dried herbs and savory spices all emerge from this full-bodied, thick and unctuously textured beauty. It has the classic tannic grip of the variety, yet that's paired with the hallmark texture and purity of the estate. This is an awesome wine any way you look at it. VM 92 (9/2015): Opaque ruby. The nose displays an array of dark fruit and floral scents, along with suggestions of pipe tobacco and woodsmoke. Sweet and generous in style, offering broad, edge-free flavors of blackberry and bitter cherry. Closes smooth and very long, with gentle tannins providing shape. This hefty, seamless example of Tempranillo will be delicious in its youth but also has the depth to age. (Drink between 2019-2026). Josh Raynolds. |

| VM 94-96 (8/2012): In my view, the 2010 Alchemist 22 is the wine that seems to gain the most through the extended time in barrel, as the tannins have an element of polish that isn’t found in the regular bottling. Perfumed aromatics are woven throughout an expressive core of dark red fruit, licorice, tar and mint. The overall impression is one of seamless beauty and tons of promise. This is a fabulous showing from Booker and proprietor Eric Jensen. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 94-96 (8/2016): The 2014 Estate Ext 24 is the, you guessed it, the extended aged version of the Estate cuvee. This was previously called the Alchemist and in 2014 is made from 51% Tempranillo, 28% Syrah, 13% Petit Verdot and 8% Grenache. Getting a few expletives in my rough notes, this beauty sports a deep purple color as well as thrilling aromatics, full-bodied richness, building, firm tannin and straight up awesome purity. The Tempranillo structure is front and center, so I suspect short term cellaring will be the name of the game. |

WA 96 (8/2015): Formerly labeled as the Alchemist, the 2013 Booker Estate is 84% Syrah, 11% Tempranillo and the rest a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Inky colored, deep, savory and spicy, with the Tempranillo front and center at the moment, it offers lots of dark fruits, truffle, dried spice and meaty aromatics, full-bodied richness and enough tannic grip to warrant another year or two in bottle. VM 94 (9/2015): Bright purple. Deeply perfumed, complex bouquet of dried cherry, licorice, potpourri and smoky minerals, with a subtle note of raw meat. Very sweet and creamy on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit flavors that gain depth and spiciness with air. Picks up notes of candied flowers and vanilla on the back end, finishing with superb energy, suave tannins and lingering sweetness. Josh Raynolds. |

Sporting a vibrant purple/ruby color and vibrant notes of creme de cassis, jammy blackberries, melted licorice, spice and toasty oak, this full-bodied red glides across the palate with no weight, beautiful purity and shows building, chalky tannin on the palate. Drink this impeccably made Paso Robles beauty anytime over the coming 7-8 years. |

| JD 98 (8/2017): Seeing 22 months in barrel, the 2015 Fracture 22 possesses additional richness and depth over the base cuvée. Crème de cassis, black currants, smoked meats, licorice and roasted herb characteristics give way to a full-bodied, opulent, incredibly hedonistic Syrah that has a layered, silky texture, sweet tannin and a forward style that’s still going to surprise in the cellar give its balance and richness. |

WA 96-99 (8/2014): The 2012 Fracture 24 shows similar cassis, vanilla bean and licorice-styled aromas, but has a slightly more savory undercurrent, with smoked meats and wild herbs as well. It too is full-bodied, deeply concentrated and layered, with incredible depth and richness that stays classy and pure. This beauty flirts with perfection and will have a decade or more of longevity. VM 93 (7/2014): The 2012 Fracture is gorgeous. Silky, layered and impeccable on the palate, the 2012 is a wine of pure textural balance. The flavors are bright, floral and much more lifted than is often the case. Sweet rose petals, mint and cinnamon are some of the many notes that flesh out on the racy, silky finish. The 2012 is nicely layered in the glass, but also fairly laid back by Paso standards. |

VM 95-97 (8/2012): The 2010 Fracture (Syrah) shows off gorgeous purity and finesse in its rich dark fruit. This is a decidedly overt, flashy wine, yet it also possesses stunning aromatics and impeccable, world-class balance. Layers of fruit built to the huge, opulent finish. I can hardly wait to taste this from bottle. In 2010, 100% of the fruit was de stemmed. Antonio Galloni. JD 94-97 (6/2012): Not yet bottled and tasted out of barrel, the 2010 Booker Vineyard Syrah Fracture is possibly the most impressive vintage of this to date. A blend of 100% Syrah that’s aged all in French oak, it delivers a stunning bouquet of smoked black fruits, toast, chocolate, roasted meats, and crushed flowers that gives way to a full-bodied, structured, and elegantly put together palate. Chewy, ripe tannin frames the finish beautifully, and this is impressive. It should benefit from short term cellaring on release, and have a fairly broad drink window. |

WA 97 (8/2013): Up there with the best of the vintage, the 2011 The Fracture is ethereal stuff that’s made with the goal to be the most ready to drink of the lineup. I’m not sure if that goal is met or not, but I can say the wine is utterly brilliant. Seeing only 5-10% stem inclusion, it delivers rocking aromas of cassis, black raspberry, hints of roasted herbs, licorice and chocolate that give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless and textured effort that has both elegance and deep, layered fruit and richness. Hard to resist and a joy to drink, it nevertheless has the balance and depth to evolve gracefully through 2021. Drink 2015-2021. VM 95 (7/2013): The 2011 Fracture, 100% Syrah, is one of the deepest and richest of these 2011s. A plush, highly expressive mid-palate opens to reveal layers of dark fruit, leather, licorice and melted road tar. The 2011 is endowed with considerable aromatic depth and pure richness. Eric Jensen aged the 2011 in Hermitage and Francois Freres barrels, 50% new. JS 94 (11/2011): Gorgeous aromas of dark berries with blackberry and blueberry; hints of flowers too. Full and rich with wonderful cocoa, coffee and blackberries. Intensely long. So much going on here. Seductive. One or two years more before striking. VM 94 (12/2013): (100% syrah and 15% alcohol, the highest in the Booker set this vintage): Inky purple. Pungent, smoke-accented aromas of black raspberry, olive tapenade and floral oils. Very syrah. Lush and complex on the palate, offering potent flavors of cherry-cola, blackberry, violet pastille and star anise. Rich but surprisingly lively syrah, with powerful closing punch and gently chewy, harmonious tannins. |

| WA 96 (8/2014): There are roughly 293 cases of the 2012 Fracture to go around, and it checks in as a blend of 100% Syrah that was aged 18 months in French oak. A big, rich and decadent effort, it’s another spectacular effort from this estate that does everything right. Creme de cassis, chocolate, spice-box, graphite and ground pepper all come together beautifully here, and this beauty has a forward, supple and full-bodied style that’s hard to resist. More elegant and open than past vintages, I’d drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years, but it will evolve for longer. |

WA 99 (8/2015): The 2013 Fracture is an utterly sensational blend of 100% Syrah, all from the estate Booker Vineyard, that exhibits off-the-chart notes of creme de cassis, crushed flowers, licorice, vanilla bean and toasted spice. Possessing perfect integration of its fruit, alcohol, tannin and acidity, it's full-bodied and incredibly seamless, with terrific concentration, a full, layered mid-palate and a blockbuster finish. Paso Robles Syrah at its finest, this incredible wine will benefit from a year or two in the cellar, yet thrill through 2025. Hats off to Eric Jensen for this absolutely killer effort and readers who doubt the quality of wine coming from these rolling hills west of Paso Robles need to try this wine. VM 93 (9/2015): Brilliant purple. Sexy, focused mineral- and smoke-accented dark fruit liqueur and potpourri scents are complemented by suggestions of anise and cola. Sweet, seamless and spicy on the palate, with intense boysenberry and cherry-cola flavors becoming livelier with aeration. Really stains the palate and finishes sappy and very long, with smooth tannins. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 97 (9/2017): “I want my softest, most textured, rounded Syrah with density and gentle tannins to go into this label,” winemaker Eric Jensen informed me. Produced from 100% Syrah, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Fracture has a vibrant nose of crushed red currants and black cherries with hints of bay leaves, cloves, aniseed and forest floor, plus a touch of roses. Full-bodied and beautifully structured, it has a lively backbone supporting the dynamic fruit, finishing with a beautiful herbal lift. JD 96 (8/2017): Leading off the 2015s, the 2015 Fracture is 100% Syrah that was brought up mostly in new barrels. It’s a classic, elegant Paso Syrah that delivers loads of black raspberries, cassis, toasted spices and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors. A more elegant, streamlined example of this cuvee, it shows the freshness of the vintage, supple tannin and a charming, elegant style that’s a dream to drink. It is already approachable, yet will still be better with another year or two in bottle. |

| JD 98 (11/2018): The base 2016 Fracture is another flat-out awesome wine from Jenson that has everything you could want from a Syrah grown on limestone soils on the west side of Paso Robles. Deep, massively concentrated, and textured, it still glides across the palate with thrilling purity of fruit and has a great, great finish. Eric Jensen’s Booker Vineyards continues to make a ripe, sexy, pedal-to-the-metal syle of wine and these latest 2016s don’t disappoint. |

WA 95 (8/2016): First made last year, the 2014 Fulldraw checks in as a mix of 46% Syrah, 33% Grenache and 21% Mourvedre that was raised mostly in barrel. Its inky purple color is followed by a rockin', sweet, layered bouquet of creme de cassis, black plums, vanilla bean, licorice and cured meats. A classic Paso Robles GSM blend, with full-bodied richness, no hard edges, tons of sweet fruit and beautiful purity, it benefits from a decant and will shine for upwards of a decade. VM 94 (9/2016): Bright violet. Ripe red and blue fruits, candied lavender, incense and a hint of spicecake on the highly fragrant nose. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering intense black currant and bitter cherry flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Shows impressive depth and vivacity, with no rough edges. JD 96 (8/2017): The 2015 Fulldraw comes from a site located just beside Jensen’s estate Booker Vineyard and is 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah. It has a gorgeous, Châteauneuf du Pape-like (it reminds me of Domaine de Marcoux’s Vieilles Vignes cuvée) perfume of red and black fruits, spice-box, incense, fennel and cured meats. Ethereally textured and elegant, yet also ripe, powerful and concentrated, it has ripe tannin, it’s an incredible wine that builds with time in the glass. While beautiful today, it will be even better with short term cellaring and keep through 2027. WA 95 (9/2017): A blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 20% Syrah, the 2015 Fulldraw has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and opens with black and blue fruit notes of blackberries and blueberries with suggestions of licorice, tree bark and black soil, plus a waft of lavender. | WA 94-96 (8/2016): From a hillside vineyard just off of Vineyard Drive road (near Denner) that has lots of clay soils (so more water retention and better canopy development, which is very different from Booker Vineyard), the 2015 Jada Vineyard checks in as a mix of 55% Syrah and 45% Grenache that saw 25% stems and aging all in barrel. Full-bodied, rich, unctuous and downright sexy, with lots of jammy blackberry, cassis, roasted herbs and melted licorice (there are some floral notes hiding in there as well), it's another stacked red from Jensen that readers shouldn't miss. |

WA 94-96 (8/2012): Booker’s 2010 My Favorite Neighbor bursts from the glass with a heady array of blueberries, dark cherries, spices, violets, mint and licorice. The 2010 stands out for its huge fruit and impeccable balance. Proprietor Eric Jensen planned to give the wine a full 24 months in oak. This is another compelling wine full of promise. The blend is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot and 23% Syrah. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. VM 92 (12/2012): (made from 44% cabernet sauvignon, 33% petit verdot and 23% syrah): Bright purple. Spicy cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas are brightened by cracked pepper and rose, with a slow-building vanilla note adding sweetness. Pliant, deeply concentrated dark berry flavors show very good precision and energy, with an exotic building floral pastille note adding vibrancy. Shows impressive power on the finish, which offers a bitter cherry pit character and noteworthy persistence. |

WA 95 (8/2013): Holding things slightly closer to the vest, the 2011 My Favorite Neighbor (46% Syrah, 40% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon) has full-bodied richness and power to go with classic aromas and flavors of cassis, wild herbs, tobacco and cedar. The Cabernet and Petit Verdot really show here, with the Syrah component adding more plushness on the palate. Firming up nicely on the finish, with ripe, yet notable tannin, this serious 2011 should be given another 2-3 years in the cellar. While it will be hard to resist in its youth, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this drinking nicely at age 15 and beyond. Drink 2015-2026. VM 95 (7/2013): The 2011 My Favorite Neighbor is one of the many highlights at Booker this year. Explosive, full-bodied and opulent, the 2011 captures the generous, resonant warmth that is so typical of Paso Robles while at the same time retaining gorgeous balance and proportion. There is so much to like here. What a gorgeous wine! The blend is 46% Syrah, 40% Petit Verdot, and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. VM 91+ (12/2013): (46% syrah, 40% petit verdot and 14% cabernet sauvignon): Inky purple. Deeply pitched black and blue fruit scents are lifted by zesty Asian spice and floral nuances. Ripe and fleshy, offering expansive cassis, blueberry and bitter chocolate flavors and a touch of candied licorice. Closes with firm, youthful tannins, lingering smokiness and a hint of black pepper. The most brooding wine in the Booker lineup this year and the only one that I'd insist on stashing away for another few years. |

It too has a southern Rhone-like feel and should drink nicely on release and evolve gracefully for 7-8 years. VM 92-94 (7/2014): Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, mint, tobacco and cedar are some of the many notes that blossom in the 2012 Oublie 24. JD 93 (12/2011): Possibly the most restrained of the lineup, the 2009 Booker Vineyard Oublie ("The Forgotten One") is a blend of 34% Grenache, 33% Counoise, and 33% Mourvedre that shows deep, earthy aromas of brambly black and blue fruits, toasted spice, asphalt, and licorice on the nose. Beautifully complex, with an almost Zinfandel like spice and bramble streak, this full-bodied, pure, and decadently textured red has beautiful freshness and focus, and a long, clean finish. There's solid ripeness here, but this grows on you and keeps you coming back for another glass. It will continue to shine for another 5-8 years easily. VM 92 (11/2011): Vivid ruby. Red and dark berry aromas show impressive clarity, with notes of licorice, lavender and rose contributing complexity. Big and densely packed but light on its feet, offering intense raspberry, boysenberry and spice flavors. Juicy and precise on the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity. This wine's marriage of power and vivacity is impressive. Josh Raynolds. WA 92 (8/2011): The 2009 Oublie is an unusual blend of equal parts Counoise, Grenache and Mourvedre. JD 92 (8/2023): Bottled late, the 2020 Perl is based on 91% Syrah and 9% Grenache that spent 24 months in 50% new oak. Coming from sourced fruit on the west side of Paso, it has a richer, medium to full-bodied style that brings plenty of darker berry fruits, some graphite and iron notes, some firmer, chalky tannins, and a good finish. It's well done and enjoyable. VM 90 (5/2023): Dark and brooding in the glass, the 2020 Perl opens with savory herbs, ashen stone and black currants. It's soft-textured with crisp minerality and soothingly ripe dark fruits. The 2020 finishes with tension, lightly tannic and a salted licorice note. This is the first vintage of Perl, a blend of 91% Syrah and 9% Grenache from mostly sourced fruit. Eric Guido. |

| WA 94-96 (8/2014): Still in barrel, the 2012 Remnant 24 (identical blend to the regular release) will see 24 months in oak before bottling. It’s also worth noting that since there was no My Favorite Neighbor produced in 2012, this cuvee received all of the grapes that would normally go into that cuvee. While billed as a catch-all blend, it tastes like anyone else’s top wine and offers loads of sweet black fruits, damp underbrush, chocolate and roasted herbs to go with a full-bodied, rich, layered and downright sexy profile. There’s no shortage of tannin here either, so a year of cellaring is recommended. It will have 10-15 years of longevity, but bottles wouldn’t last that long at my house. |

Remnant Proprietary Blend |

| |
WA 96 (8/2012): The 2010 Remnant is gorgeous and utterly refined from the very first taste. Dark red cherries plums, licorice, incense, mint and spices are some of the many notes that jump from the glass in this delineated, fragrant red. The appropriately named Remnant is 60% Syrah, 20% Tempranillo, 11% Mourvèdre, 5% Grenache and 4% Counoise, all what Jensen calls 'super-press juice,' which is the part of the press many winemakers don't even use in their final blends. In other words, Remnant is essentially a wine made from leftovers. Frankly, this a bit of a miracle in the glass, but everything works together beautifully. That can only mean that Booker is a great site, and Eric Jensen knows how to coax the very best from his vines. VM 93 (11/2012): Dark purple. Powerful aromas of candied dark berries, licorice and mocha, with smoke and allspice nuances that build with air. Lush and expansive, offering ripe black and blue fruit flavors lifted by gentle acidity. Closes sweet, supple and very long, with pliant tannins and resonating spiciness. Josh Raynolds. JD 93 (6/2012): Even more structured and firm, the 2010 Booker Vineyard Remnant is a blend of 60% Syrah, 20% Tempranillo, 11% Mourvedre, 5% Grenache, and 4% Counoise that contains a touch of press wine, and was fermented with 50% whole cluster and aged all in neutral oak for 16 months. Very masculine and edgy, with aromas of blackberry and currant fruit intermixed with dark chocolate, pan drippings, and bloody meat, this full-bodied blend is savory, chewy, and concentrated on the palate. The edgy quality of the Tempranillo really shows in the tannin structure and this will benefit from 1-2 years (or more) of bottle age, and have an interesting evolution. |

WA 94 (8/2013): Also superb, the 2011 Remnant (formerly known as the Alchemist) is a kitchen sink blend of 55% Syrah, 14% Tempranillo, 11% Petit Verdot, 10% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre that saw 20% new French oak, 40% once-used barrels and the balance neutral oak. It’s a savory, complex 2011 that offers up plenty of spice, toast and cedar that’s balanced by a core of sweet black raspberry fruit that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, balanced and beautifully textured, this totally compelling red has fine tannin, serious richness and depth, and an overall classy profile. It will have upwards of a decade of longevity. Drink 2014-2021. VM 94 (7/2013): The 2011 Remnant is gorgeous. Pomegranate, orange peel, cloves, menthol and licorice all add shades of exotic complexity as this full-bodied, explosive wine opens up in the glass. The style is surprisingly soft and voluptuous for the year. Many producers in California eschew press juice in their blends. Eric Jensen, on he other hand, decided to bottle all of that juice, giving birth to the appropriately and colorfully named Remnant. In 2011, Remnant is 55% Syrah, 14% Tempranillo, 11% Petit Verdot, 10% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre. Antonio Galloni. |

| WA 97+ (8/2012): I was blown away by the 2010 Ripper, a 100% Grenache done in concrete for the first time. It boasts captivating aromatic complexity, layers of sweet, refined fruit and fabulous overall balance. Vivid red fruit, flowers, mint and spices linger on the sublime finish. The Ripper boasts extraordinary varietal expression. Making pure Grenache in Paso Robles is not easy, but this is a model of what can be achieved here. Although impeccably restrained, the sheer glycerin and richness are pure California. The 2010 Ripper is a modern-day classic from Booker and proprietor Eric Jensen. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. |

WA 96+ (8/2013): Starting out the tasting and absolutely rocking, the 2011 The Ripper checks in as a blend of 100% Grenache that was brought up in equal parts concrete and neutral barrel. Offering up layers of kirsch, dried underbrush, white pepper and hints of spring flowers, it flows onto the palate with a medium to full-bodied, vibrant profile that gains richness and depth with air. Leaning towards the more focused, elegant side of the spectrum, this beauty doesn’t lack for texture or length. Give it a year or three and enjoy through 2023. It’s superb and well worth the effort to track down. Drink 2015-2023. VM 94 (7/2013): Eric Jensen has done a fabulous job with the 2011 Ripper, no easy feat after the iconic 2010. Expressive floral notes, mint, spices and kirsch all lift out of the glass. The freshness and crystalline purity of the year come through in spades. Jensen aged the 2011 70% in cement and 30% in neutral oak, an approach that worked beautifully. Over the last few years, Ripper has established itself as one of the most distinctive Grenaches in California. VM 93 (12/2013): (100% grenache and 14.6% alcohol): Deep ruby. Spicy black raspberry and cherry compote on the highly perfumed nose, with zesty mineral and spice notes adding vibrancy. Deeply pitched but lively red fruit flavors show excellent clarity and sweetness, with a jolt of tangy acidity adding spine. The sappy, broad finish is shaped by smooth and harmonious tannins. This wine was raised entirely in used demi-muids. |

WA 96 (8/2014): The 2012 The Ripper (always 100% Grenache), which checks in at 13.6% alcohol, is a fabulous effort that was brought up all in neutral 500-liter French oak barrels. Loaded with notions of kirsch, dried flowers, rose petal and underbrush, it’s about as seamless and elegant as this cuvee gets, yet it’s still no lightweight and has full-bodied richness and depth. Showing plenty of fine tannin on the finish, it is hard to resist now, but should have a solid 10-12 year drink window. VM 94 (7/2014): A dark, voluptuous wine, the 2012 Ripper bursts from the glass with dark red and black stone fruits, spices, new leather and menthol flesh out in the glass. In 2012, the Ripper is much darker and riper than normal, with less varietal character than has been the case of late. In 2012, Eric Jensen managed the canopies to get as much hang time as possible, which resulted in extended hang time and a harvest that was about three weeks later than normal. Personally, I have enjoyed Booker's Ripper most when the Grenache characteristics are emphasized to a greater degree. The 2012 was done entirely in neutral 500 liter barrels. |

| WA 94 (8/2014): A new cuvee for me, the 2012 RLF (which is named after Eric’s father-in-law, Randy Lee Fannin, who died in a tragic incident in 2011) is a blend of 71% Grenache and 29% Syrah that was aged in a combination of used and new barrels. Tasting like a high-quality Chateauneuf du Pape, it offers perfumed black raspberry, framboise, crushed flowers, lavender and herbs de Provence aromas and flavors. This flows to full-bodied, silky and sexy wine that has impeccable balance, a rounded, supple texture and a great finish. It’s hard to resist now, and I see no reason to delay gratification either. |

WA 94 (8/2011): The 2009 Alchemist comes across as powerful, tightly coiled and quite inward. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot add considerable structure as layers of blue and black fruit saturate the palate. This is another powerful, long wine endowed with exceptional definition and a dark, brooding personality. In 2009 the blend is 65% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 10% Grenache. The wine saw 55% new barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 92 (10/2011): (65% syrah, 15% cabernet sauvignon and 10% each of petit verdot and grenache): Deep, glass-staining ruby. A sexy, intensely perfumed bouquet evokes dark berry preserves, cherry-cola, Asian spices and violet. No way I'd have guessed that syrah was the dominant variety in this lively wine, and I mean that in a positive way. Lithe and precise, given its size, with pure black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that stain the palate. A pure and focused blend with seductive finishing florality and superb length. |

Offering up chocolate-laced aromas of blackberry, raspberry, spice, smoke, and tar, this full-bodied, powerful blend is voluptuous and gorgeously textured, while still showing the focused profile of the 2010 vintage. Beautifully pure, layered, and rich, this beauty will age gracefully for a decade or more. |

| VM 93-95 (8/2012): Booker's 2010 Vertigo 22 wraps around the palate with dark red fruit, flowers, mint and spices. The extra time in barrel has given the Vertigo 22 a dimension of seamlessness and total integration the regular bottling doesn't have. At the same time, some of the vibrancy and pure energy of the regular Vertigo has been dampened ever so slightly. Readers will find much to admire in both. Antonio Galloni. |

| JD 98 (11/2018): The same blend as the straight Vertigo (52% Syrah, 30% Grenache, and 18% Mourvèdre), the 2016 Vertigo 22 offers a similar profile of deep, decadent notes of blueberries, graphite, smoked earth, and asphalt. More closed, backward, and dense than the classic cuvée, this full-bodied, incredibly layered, multi-dimensional effort needs 2-3 years or bottle age and will cruise in cold cellars over the following 10-15 years. Eric Jensen’s Booker Vineyards continues to make a ripe, sexy, pedal-to-the-metal syle of wine and these latest 2016s don’t disappoint. (Drink between 2018-2046). |

WA 95-97 (8/2014): Still in barrel, the 2012 Vertigo 24 release shows a similar level of purity to go with killer aromatics (black raspberry, bouquet garni and licorice), full-bodied richness and a layered, decadent style on the palate. It has a tad more richness and depth than the straight bottling, and is an incredible red. VM 91-93 (7/2014): The 2012 Vertigo 24 has a little more tannic spine than the straight Vertigo. Dark red stone fruits, spices, mint and new leather are all very much alive. Although quite supple and expressive, the 2012 also has plenty of drive and energy. Antonio Galloni. |

Similar in style, with full-bodied depth and richness, it has more toasted bread, meaty, bloody notes and spice as well as a sexy, voluptuous and seamless style on the palate. VM 95 (7/2013): The 2011 Vertigo is one of the clear highlights of the year in Paso Robles. A rich, resonant wine, the 2011 boasts gorgeous depth and power, especially for the year. The brightness of the vintage comes through on the finish laced with expressive dark Syrah fruit. Floral and spice notes add vibrancy as well as complexity. The 2011 is 69% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre and 7% Grenache. I very much like the sense of purity here. WA 94 (8/2013): More Syrah heavy, with 62% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre and a splash of Grenache, fermented with 30% stems and aged in 20% new French oak, the 2011 Vertigo is red fruit-driven, with plenty of raspberry, licorice and floral notes flowing to a medium to full-bodied, balanced and lively palate. Gaining more minerality and spice in the glass, it, too, is a knockout effort from Eric. Enjoy it over the coming 7-8 years. Drink now-2021. VM 94 (12/2013): (69% syrah, 24% mourvedre and 7% grenache): Inky ruby. Suave, vanilla-accented blackberry, blueberry and floral pastille aromas show impressive energy and thrust. Surprisingly elegant, even graceful on the palate, with vibrant, violet-tinged dark berry and bitter cherry flavors complicated by slow-building spicecake and cracked pepper nuances. Silky tannins add structure to the long, alluringly sweet finish, with its lasting floral note. Wine lovers familiar with Eric Jensen's past work will be surprised (pleasantly, I hope) by this wine's finesse. |

JD 99 (10/2019): I loved the 2017 Vertigo from barrel, and it didn’t disappoint from bottle. A blend of 63% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Grenache and Petite Sirah, brought up in 65% new French oak, this full-bodied, massively endowed 2017 has complex notes of blue fruits, blood orange, violets, and exotic spices. As with all Eric’s 2017s, it’s rich and concentrated yet has remarkable purity and elegance at the same time. It’s one of the finest GSM blends out there and will shine for at least 8-10 years. (Drink between 2019-2029). VM 96 (2/2020): Brilliant purple. Blackberry, blueberry, cola, exotic spices, vanilla and pungent flowers on the deeply perfumed, mineral-accented nose. Compellingly sweet, lush and broad in the mouth, showing hefty dark berry preserve, candied violet and fruitcake flavors that pick up mocha, vanilla and star anise nuances on the back half. Finishes extremely long and smooth, with velvety tannins, lingering florality and outstanding clarity. 60% new French oak. (Drink between 2024-2034). WA 93 (2/2020): The 2017 Vertigo is a blend of 65% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache aged in 65% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, the nose opens with tar, chargrill and loamy earth scents, slowly offering up game meats, black currants, dried violets and dried black cherries with a chocolatey undercurrent. Full-bodied, rich and slowly blossoming in the mouth, it has a firm, grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing long and still youthfully coiled. |
