BH 91-93 (5/2011): Like the Taillepieds, this is also highly perfumed with rose petal, fresh red berries, wet stone and an earthy component that can also be found on the equally mineral-inflected, cool and pure flavors that evidence excellent detail and real verve on the delicious, intense and persistent finish. A lovely and understated Pommard of finesse. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

BH 91-94 (4/2017): This is also appealingly elegant with its pretty liqueur-like red pinot fruit, spice, sandalwood and subtle earth scents. The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors remains refined, lacy and focused with a lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly firmer finish. Lovely.
VM 92-94 (1/2017): Good dark red. Subdued but precise aromas of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This beauty boasts a firm spine of acidity and finishes with lovely ripeness and lingering perfume. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

There is simply more material here with a buried yet noticeable tannic spine. A terrific wine of impressive balance. |

Not hugely vibrant but undeniably fat and round, finishing with lush tannins and a note of underbrush. These degenerating vines produced fruit with 15% potential alcohol. BH 86-88 (5/2006): A beautifully complex and obvious ripe nose of high-toned red berry fruit infused with obvious minerality merges into earthy, floral and raspberry liqueur-like flavors underpinned by firm and slightly dry tannins that are not quite as ripe. This would probably benefit from being fined. (Drink starting 2009). |

| BH 857-90 (4/2015): An intensely floral and spicy nose reveals notes of lilac, rose petal and cool red and blue pinot fruit aromas. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy and tension to the well-delineated and subtly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that poses a dusty, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly dry finish. JM 92-95 (11/2018): All whole bunch, 55% new wood and a late malolactic fermentation here. Quite rich purple, with a lighter rim, raspberry fruit, the whole bunch effect is in support rather than too obvious. Firm fruit, comes up to the tannins at the back, Decent acidity, but a little lack of concentration, I thought. Brian says just more backward. But note that the quality of the fruit is up where it should be.
VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is entirely whole cluster fruit matured in 50% new oak. It has a backward and reticent bouquet, yet one can tell there are coiled up black fruit here, mixed with raspberry coulis and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, slightly chewy tannin at first, grippy and assertive in style. Yet it manages to retain admirable balance with an engaging, quite saline, lightly spiced finish that fans out with style. Excellent. Neal Martin.
BH 91-94 (4/2019): An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a pretty panoply of spice elements on the purple fruit and sandalwood-scented aromas. There is slightly better density to the tautly muscular and powerful flavors that exhibit fine length and depth. Once again this is not super-dense but even so it appears to possess outstanding development potential though note well that it will need plenty of time to realize it. Drink 2034+. |

There is excellent verve to the nicely detailed if not especially dense flavors that possess an unusually supple mid-palate that immediately firms up on the impressively long and complex finale. WA 93-94 (12/2009): As described in detail in issue 171 de Montille's 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts - Christianne comes from a share of that cru which is clearly visible on vineyard maps as if it had been cut-out from (or juts into) today's La Tache. With a more exotic, musky, and effusive floral perfume; similar plum and raspberry fruit and smokiness; and more palate-staining concentration than the corresponding "regular" Malconsorts, this also carries more structure and a more vivid if hard to pin down mineral dimension. The finish here is positively tidal in its expansiveness and relentlessness. Where the other bottling has more 2006-tyical virtues, this "Christianne" could easily be taken for a 2005. It will never give chase to its own 2005 counterpart, but it should prove immensely rewarding to follow for 12-15 years.
VM 93 (4/2009): Good full medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and Oriental spices. A step up in intensity over the foregoing 2006s; in fact, this is a real spice bazaar on the palate, with lovely sweetness and penetrating perfume intensified by very firm but harmonious acidity. Plenty of lurking stony minerality underneath. Finishes quite suave, with a solid spine of tannins and acids and captivating lingering perfume.
BH 91-94 (4/2008): Here the slightly more elegant nose is even more floral as well as slightly spicier as well but otherwise, really quite similar, leading to rich, full, sweet and beautifully detailed and texturally, the mouth feel is slightly rounder as the tannins appear to be more completely integrated at this early stage, which confers a greater sense of harmony and overall balance. Lovely juice with Outstanding potential. Drink 2016+. Don't miss! |

The palate is well balanced with nicely integrated oak, well-judged and plenty of salinity on the finish. VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent.
BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (4/2015): (from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) This is also notably floral with its cool mix of red and dark currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of earth, game and wood nuances. There is fine power, punch and detail to the muscular medium weight flavors that possess an unusually refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty, complex and impressively persistent finish. Good as this is, the Champeaux is just as interesting though in fairness I should note that it doesn't have quite the same size and weight as does the Charmes. Drink 2025+.
VM 90-93+ (4/2015): The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin stands out for its intense minerality and energy. Crushed rocks, sage, chalk, spice and dark red stone fruits open up in a deep, powerful Burgundy endowed with notable class. It's pretty clear the 2013 is showing just a bare hint of its potential today. Still, from time to time, the wine's pedigree comes through loud and clear. Bernstein's Charmes is a blend of 60% true Charmes and 40% Mazoyères.
VM 90-93 (1/2015): (a 50/50 blend of true Charmes and Mazoyères): Bright, deep red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Cazetiers, offering scents of blackberry, violet, chocolate and espresso. Dense, silky and sweet, with lovely energy and underlying minerality to its juicy dark berry flavors. The dusty tannins saturate the plate without introducing any impression of dryness. For a grand cru, this should give pleasure relatively early. |

BH 92 (4/2015): ( from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha.) A cool, airy and exceptionally pretty nose demonstrates notes of red cherry and raspberry, floral, anise and soft earth scents. There is more volume but interestingly also more precision to the broad-shouldered and voluminous flavors that exhibit plenty of minerality on the complex, long and powerful finish. The level of dry extract is impressive and while the balance isn't perfect this should still make for lovely drinking in time. Drik 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 91-93 (1/2015): (a combination of Haut and Bas, the top of the cru providing fresher fruit and the bottom riper, according to Guillaume Boillot; aged in 50% new oak): Good bright red. ure but reticent aromas of redcurrant, rust and minerals; conveys a distinct iron character. Then creamy and seamless in the mid-palate but with a decidedly elegant delicacy. Finishes savory and long, with a serious spine of peppery tannins calling for patience.
WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens, which comes from two parcels located in Rugiens Haut and Rugiens Bas, has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet that is harmonious and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, good acidity here, with a fresh and almost citric finish. Nicely structured with fine tannins, this carries the 50% new oak well and should give 10-15 years of pleasure. |

VM 92-95 (1/2015): Bright, dark red. Extremely complex nose combines black raspberry, minerals and subtle soil tones plus a suggestion of almost honeyed sweetness. Plush, sappy and utterly seamless, but with lively floral and mineral high notes contributing to an impression of Outstanding cut and energy. Extremely classy wine with great thrust and peppery persistence. This was 12.2% potential alcohol chaptalized to 13%. One of the most promising 2013s I tasted from the Côte de Beaune in November.
WA 90-92 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets, which sees 50% new wood, has a floral, slightly candied bouquet with orange-sorbet scents infusing the mixture of red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, quite fine and tense, with a precise finish that neatly carries the oak. This is probably the best of the Volnay ‘13 from the domaine this year.
BH 90 (4/2015): ( from a .60 ha parcel) A more restrained nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of black pinot fruit, cinnamon, anise, exotic tea and cassis nuances. There is a beguiling texture to the energetic and overtly mineral-driven medium weight flavors that also display moderate austerity on the lingering finish that isn't dry though there is a touch of asperity to it. My score assumes that this will eventually dissipate though it may require a few years first. Drink 2020+. |

VM 91-94 (1/2015): Deep, bright red. Subtly complex nose melds redcurrant, black cherry, minerals, violet and earth. Wonderfully sweet and intense, showing a distinctly crunchy fruit character and lovely inner-mouth lift. From old vines and tiny grapes, and it shows. Finishes juicy, pure and very long, with firm but very suave tannins. The crop level here was just 14 hectoliters per hectare, according to Boillot--and 7 in 2014!
BH 91 (4/2015): (from 25+ year old vines) An airy, fresh and distinctly cool nose displays an elegant melange of dark cherry, essence of raspberry and plum along with hints of spice, floral and tea. The mouth feel of the silky and refined middle weight flavors is notably finer and I very much like the vibrancy that continues onto the balanced and lingering finish. The overall impression of refinement is enhanced by the notably fine grain of the tannins and this is really lovely, indeed it's very Volnay. Drink 2020+. Outstanding!
WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru les Chevrets errs more toward red fruit than black fruit, unlike Henri Boillot’s other premier cru. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, touches of mocha and leather emerging toward the finish where the new oak is conspicuous at the moment. Give this a couple of years in bottle. It just feels a little conservative compared to others at present. |

VM 90-92 (1/2015): Bright, dark red. Reticent, rather wild aromas of dark cherry and underbrush. Energetic but backward; much tighter today than the village wine and more dominated by its structure. The wild quality carries through on the palate. Best today on the back end, where fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate.
WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets comes from a single parcel of vines. The nose is well defined, dominated by the new oak at the moment, but there is sufficient fruit underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite dense at the moment with a touch of bell pepper on the masculine finish. Fine - if just a bit predictable.
BH 88 (4/2015): Here too there are discreet floral nuances to the pretty red and dark currant scents that are liberally laced with earth and sandalwood nuances. There is a bit more volume to the medium-bodied flavors that retain a lovely sense of detail on the energetic, dusty and mildly austere finish though in this case there is just a hint of dryness that detracts slightly from the overall sense of balance and harmony. Drink 2020+. |

WA 92 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was showing some rather conspicuous new oak on the nose, though there is sufficient fruit underneath to soak that up. It just needs to develop more presence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine tannin, a pinch of black pepper on the tip of the tongue with good heft behind it. What it lacks is killer precision on the finish, all the same, I admire the boldness of this Bonnes-Mares and that is often what I seek from this vineyard. Tasted September 2016.
VM 94 (3/2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Highly nuanced scents of red cherry, raspberry, flowers and underbrush. At once silky and penetrating, showing a positive medicinal aspect to its flavors of red berries, flowers and spicy herbs. Very shapely wine with a rising finish featuring suave tannins and noteworthy finesse. A superb showing; this strikes me as more refined than the larger-scaled 2014. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 94 (1/2016): An all but invisible veneer of wood integrates seamlessly with the intensely earthy and wonderfully complex dark berry fruit aromas that display top notes of spice and dried flowers along with a hint of herbal tea. As one might reasonably expect there is excellent power, volume and muscle to the attractive mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess a notably different texture compared to the Clos de Bèze on the hugely long finish. Unlike the Clos de Bèze however this beauty will probably be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring. |

An appealingly fresh and deeply pitched nose possesses undertones of earth and sauvage notes to the mix of red and dark currant scents. There is reasonably good richness but also good delineation to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display only a trace of rusticity on the frank, firm and intense finish. Drink 2020+.
VM 88 (3/2016): Dark bright red. Cool aromas of black cherry, menthol and mint. Juicy and on the lean side, with tightly wound dark berry flavors accented by pepper and spices. Shows good intensity but the tannins are a touch dry. Will this put on weight with time in bottle?
WA 87-89 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a clean and pure, rather “airy” bouquet, with fresh strawberry, citrus fruit and a slight stoniness. The palate is fresh and vibrant with tart red fruit, a citric line of acidity that is just slightly compromised by the dominant new wood at the moment. This is the one cru that I would have been more prudent about the use of oak, although it should meld together with time. |

There is good delineation to the vibrant middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the firm, balanced and lingering finish. This does not yet possess superior complexity but my predicted range assumes that it will develop based on the quality of the underlying material. Drink 2021+.
WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Echanges is a cru close to Jean-Marie's heart as he told me that his mother used to play there when she was a child. This barrel sample, which was 70% through malolactic fermentation, has a floral bouquet with plenty of ripe mulberry fruit. The palate is succulent on the entry, sappy in the mouth with clean lines and a gentle grip on the finish. Fine. |

This is notably finer than the old vines cuvée if not quite a long or concentrated. Still this is lovely and also worth your consideration as it should drink reasonably well young. VM 87-89 (11/2014): Moderately saturated palish medium red. Sweet aromas of blueberry, cherry, rose petal, licorice and vanillin oak. Sweet and dense if a bit youthfully clenched, showing good body to its redcurrant and spice flavors. Finishes firmly tannic and persistent, with good lift. BH 94 (1/2016): A background application of wood is sufficiently subtle to allow the notably spicy and ripe yet quite cool aromas of both red and black pinot fruit, herbal tea and floral elements to shine. There is excellent volume to the intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in an explosively long, mouth coating and moderately austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. Grivot is one of few domaines where their Ech is easily a match for their Clos de Vougeot in terms of size, weight and power and overall this is potentially terrific.
VM 93 (10/2023): The 2013 Echézeaux Grand Cru was picked around 3 October. It has an intense redcurrant, raspberry and marmalade-tinged bouquet. There's fine focus, and graphite touches come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rugged tannins, fine acidity and dark red fruit laced with black olive and sea salt. It has a muscular finish with just a slight but welcome bitterness. This Grivot is a little too assertive, yet I cannot help falling for its charms. Very fine. Neal Martin. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very refined, you could almost say "mild-mannered" bouquet compared to the other Gevrey premier cru, with more mineral notes and more floral scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a sturdy and assertive entry: bold but ripe, supple tannin knitted with well-judged acidity that dovetail into a very focused finish. This is not as immediate as I believe the other Gevrey premier cru will be and will deserve several years in bottle.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Here there is a bit more wood with the associated traces of menthol that surround the elegant floral and like the Estournelles, airy essence of red berry fruit liqueur and spice suffused aromas. There is a sophisticated mouth feel to the appealingly textured, intense and focused middle weight flavors that also display plenty of minerality that serves to add lift to the structured, serious and strikingly long finish. This is indisputably terrific though interestingly it doesn't seem to have quite as much separation between it and the other Gevrey 1ers in the range as I typically find chez Jadot. Still, this should be a really lovely effort though note well that this is a CSJ for the patient. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 90-93 (1/2015): (this fruit was harvested on October 10, following heavy rain on the 9th): Medium red. Lovely rose petal perfume dominates the nose. Juicy and pure but tight and youthfully unforgiving; showing less fat and volume than the Estournelles. Unless this is simply painfully backward, it's hard to imagine this wine ever delivering the satisfaction of the Estournelles. Stephen. Tanzer. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a deep and introspective bouquet with broody dark berry fruit, wild hedgerow and forest floor aromas that draw you in. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well judged acidity. This is linear at the moment, very nicely focused with a dash of white pepper on the finish livening things up. Very fine...but patience required.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Like the Charmes and the Griotte, Barnier said that this was not vinified by Jadot. There is a pretty and expressive nose of red currant, raspberry, wild cherry and soft sauvage hints where the latter continues onto the dense, serious and powerful big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by a very firm and slightly rustic finish that delivers excellent if not truly sensation persistence. I slightly prefer the Chapelle for its greater refinement but it's close qualitatively speaking. Note that this too will require plenty of patience.
VM 90-92 (11/2014): Bright medium red. Lightly medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and smoke. Sweet on entry, then rather backward on the palate; has no shortage of salty stuffing but an impression of lowish acidity gives the brooding palate a slightly heavy quality. Tannins are reasonably ripe but this wine is a cipher today. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets is much more introspective and closed on the nose compared to the other Volnays: this bouquet tells you not to be so foolish as to nose it so prematurely. However, it does begin to open with intriguing dried blood/ferrous scents infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, “thicker” tannins than expected that lend this Caillerets the density more than the tension at the moment. This deserves 5 or 6 years at least in bottle.
VM 91-93 (1/2015): Healthy bright red. Riper aromas of black fruits, spices and menthol. The sweetest and roundest of these 2013s to this point, offering rich, suave flavors of red fruits, spices and red licorice. Serious but fine-grained tannins arrive late, allowing the fruit to saturate the palate. This should evolve gracefully.
BH 89-92 (4/2015): (from a parcel measuring 7ouvrees, or around .3 ha of 40+ year old vines.) An overtly spicy and somewhat more deeply pitched nose combines notes of red and dark berry fruit that display a top note of dried flowers. The dense and serious medium-bodied flavors possess a chalky mouth feel that exhibits ample minerality on the mildly austere and ever-so-slightly drying finish. In this case the supporting tannins seem ripe so there is a reasonable chance that the dryness will dissipate once the wine is bottled. Drink 2021+. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Medium-deep red. Complex, high-pitched perfume melds blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, black pepper, underbrush and dried flowers. Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious.
BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

BH 86 (1/2016): An earthy and moderately somber nose features mostly notes of various red berries along with hints of underbrush and humus. There is good punch and detail to the lightly mineral-inflected flavors that exhibit a distinct edginess on the otherwise saline and lingering if slightly clipped finish. Most people will likely find the level of acidity too much for their liking as it imparts a distinct austerity and as such I would be disinclined to age this for very long. Drink 2018+. |

Sappy and fine-grained; very dry and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of inner-palate energy. Sexy cherry and crushed stone flavors are framed by suave tannins on the very long, aromatic back end. Showing more eclat than it did from barrel a year ago, this wine has turned out very well. WA 91 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale has a more sophisticated and nuanced nose compared to its peers, red and black fruit here and well integrated oak. The palate is smooth in the mouth, supple and quite plush, clearly with some quality new oak that is almost Cathiard-like in style (something that appears to have evolved in the last few months). However, there is fruit to support that here. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and it should turn into a very decent Nuits Saint-Georges.
BH 89 (1/2016): This is admirably pure and relatively high-toned despite the presence of ample earth influence on the bright mix of red raspberry and cherry scents. There is good volume to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that display a sleek muscularity before terminating in a firm, mouth coating and well-balance if mildly austere finale. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2021+. |

BH 94-97 (1/2015): This is also absolutely stunning in every respect and displays a kaleidoscopic combination that is not quite as spicy as the Clos St. Denis though it is earthier and almost as complex. It is immediately clear that this is a bigger and more powerful wine that possesses Outstanding mid-palate density and a huge reserve of dry extract that imparts a seductive mouth feel and mostly buffers the exceptionally firm tannic spine on the massively long finish. This is an imposing effort that is even more imposingly structured and there is no point in buying this if you're not prepared to forget it in the back of your cellar for at least a decade, and two to three would be preferable. This is a stunner of a Clos de la Roche and it will be interesting to see which of the two Ponsot big boys is ultimately the better wine.
WA 95-97 (12/2014): The 2013 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted in 1905, has an inviting, delineated bouquet with vibrant wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and mineral notes. The palate has great tension – so suave and poised with superb symmetry and an effortless finish that I don’t think the Clos Saint Denis has at the moment. Laurent Ponsot did not disguise his enthusiasm for this Grand Cru and I could understand why. |

BH 92-95 (1/2015): (from a .90 ha parcel.) This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink 2028+.
WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively "conservative" Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

This is quite floral with plenty of earth and assorted spice elements adding interest to the very fresh mix of green tea and red and dark berry fruit scents. There is outstanding power and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess a robust mouth feel and ample minerality, all wrapped in a moderately austere and hugely long finish. This is a big, indeed even opulent but balanced wine that is clearly built for longer-term cellaring. Drink 2030+.
VM 94+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Knockout high-pitched aromas of red berries, peony and orange peel. Boasts compelling subtle density and sharp definition to its taut flavors of blackberry, violet, licorice, spices and minerals. In its juicy sappiness, this is like chewing on a ripe cherry. A classic Bonnes-Mares, offering superb volume without any undue weight. And an outstanding example of what phenolically ripe fruit could make in this cool vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

| WA 92 (12/2010): The Prum 2009 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese mingles spiced apple, papaya, pink grapefruit, cassis, and white raisin in a lush, creamily-textured, pungently botrytis-tinged performance full-throated from nose through peacock’s finishing flourish, and hard to beat for sheer diversity and audacity of fruit. If you’re looking for nuance of for characteristics that might be described as in any sense “mineral,” then perhaps in a dozen years you’ll find them here, otherwise search elsewhere. But in reality this is a wine that deserves a long time in the cellar and is apt to retain and add to its present virtues over a 30 year period. |

Lily and heliotrope contribute to the wine’s head-turning aromatic intensity and their inner-mouth perfume to the allure of a subtly creamy palate. For all of its unusually advanced sense of ripeness for a Kabinett, this projects remarkable delicacy and a focused sense of stone, fruit and floral interface in its lingering finish. This is another of those Prüm Kabinetts that is watery in a positive sense of that word, combining watercolor-like transparency and wash of flavor with delicacy and refreshment. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal. | WA 93 (10/2020): The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a deep and flinty, stony and herbal bouquet that needs some time to open up. Remarkably deep and complex, round and textured on the palate, this is a charming, mouth-filling and intense WSU with serious grip and length. Still far from being evolved, this is a richer, more complex Kabinett that will start to impress in 5-10 years. Stimulatingly salty on the finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

| WA 91 (2/2012): Emphasizing the bitter side of the vanilla bean as well as toasted nuts and cyanic apple pit, the Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #14 thereby generates a fascinating contrast with its apple jelly and honey richness. Alkaline and wet stone notes - beginning already in the nose - enhance that contrast. Nut oils, honey and apple reprise in a lusciously lingering finish. Less charming, refreshing, exuberant, or focused in finish than the corresponding Graacher, this Wehlener will almost certainly need a longer time to show its true potential; but one can rest assured based on one of Germany’s most certifiable track-records that at least a quarter century of pleasure is in the offing here. (I did not have opportunity to taste the corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #26.) |

WA 94 (4/2018): The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP 23 17) is still discreet, floral and finely mineral rather than fruity on the nose compared to the other 2016 Spätlesen. Lush, piquant and juicy on the palate, this is a firm but sensual Sonnenuhr with remarkable finesse, lightness and lingering salinity. Tasted March 2018.
JD 92 (5/2019): Revealing a hint of green in its color, the 2016 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese is rocking stuff that delivers mouthwatering notes of sweet peach, sugared citrus, and mint in a medium-bodied, off-dry, balanced style. It’s one of the more fruit forward efforts here yet stays vibrant, clean, and balanced. |

| VM 94 (1/2020): Dusty and yeasty notes do not interfere significantly with a transmission of fresh but ultra-concentrated pear and quince, laced with heliotrope and honeysuckle. A welcome influx of grapefruit serves for brightness and zest on an otherwise creamy as well as delicate palate, leading to a finish impeccably balanced in sweetness and vibrantly as well as lusciously persistent. | VM 94 (6/2017): This projects another dimension of clarity, levity and understated complexity from the already impressive Rieslings that preceded it in the 2015 Prüm lineup. Honeysuckle, heliotrope and apple blossom perfumes atop ripe apple and quince capture the attention on the nose, then segue to a near-weightless, subtly creamy, yet generously juicy palate.
