WA 88-89 (6/2010): Smoky black tea, pungent brown spices, and tart cherry inform a Barthod 2008 Chambolle-Musigny of enervating brightness yet incipient textural richness. Tart and pungent in its lasting finish, this will no doubt strike some tasters as leaning toward austerity, but I anticipate an exuberant, highly versatile and stimulating performer at table over the next half dozen years if not longer. “Especially in a challenging vintage," notes Barthod, “my village Chambolle benefits from originating in so many and such diverse locations."
VM 87-90 (4/2010): Full, bright red. Pretty aromas of raspberry and flowers. Juicy, intensely flavored and perfumed; with its sappy acidity, this really stimulates the salivary glands. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. As strong an early showing for this straight village wine as I can remember. Of course, this wine had the advantage of having been racked at the beginning of September, whereas the premier crus had been racked just a couple weeks before my early November visit.
BH 86-89 (1/2010): A more elegant and ever-so-slightly riper nose also displays very high-toned red pinot fruit that is in keeping with the lacy, textured, detailed and minerally middle weight flavors that are racy, linear and precise on the firm and persistent finish. This is not overly complex, at least not yet though this may come with a few years in bottle. Drink: 2013+. |

VM 90 (4/2012): Bright medium red. Wild strawberry, raspberry, mocha and menthol on the full-blown but fresh nose. Silky, sweet and seriously stuffed with fruit. Dense and strong for village wine. Finishes with good juicy length. To drink or age. (Ghislaine Barthod picked early in 2009, and this village wine gives strong evidence that this strategy was a good one.)
WA 88-90 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny is a hugely pleasing wine laced with dark red fruit, mint, minerals and flowers, all of which come together with notable persistence. A weightless, effortless wine, the Chambolle impresses for its impeccable balance and lovely sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
BH 87-90 (1/2011): (from 11 different parcels totaling 1.5 ha, scattered all around Chambolle) An ultra fresh, airy, pure and high-toned red pinot fruit nose slides gracefully into detailed and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that culminate in a dusty, mouth coating, balanced and linear finish. This is a classically styled Chambolle of finesse. Drink 2014+. |

WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes impresses for its classy, elegant personality. There is an airy, weightless quality that is immensely appealing. In many ways, the Charmes sums up so much of what Burgundy is and can be. Layers of fruit literally float on the plate on the inviting finish. This is another fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
VM 92+ (4/2012): Medium red. Reticent nose hints at raspberry, crushed rock and menthol. Quite dry and imploded but juicy and fresh, with lively notes of red berries and olive. Much less demonstrative today than the Beaux-Bruns and more dominated by its structure. Shows good minerality for the year and finishes dry, classy and long. This tight, firmly structured wine will need at least several years of aging.
BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a .25 ha parcel). An ultra elegant, airy and delicate red berry fruit nose leads to seductively textured middle weight flavors that display moderate amounts of minerality on the pure, long and decidedly firm finish. Like the Fuees, this is a wine of harmony and fine balance. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

VM 92+ (4/2014): (12.6% after chaptalization): Medium red. Dark berries, licorice and a peppery note on the nose. Concentrated and youthfully tight, with a distinctly pungent quality to its pomegranate flavor. Has power and thrust for a moderately ripe wine. Best today on the juicy finish, which mounts slowly and builds well. This needs at least six or seven years of cellaring.
BH 92 (1/2014): (From a .85 ha parcel). A relatively high-toned nose of sour cherry, raspberry, wet stone and hints of underbrush lead to cool, pure and impressively precise flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the delicious and stylish finish. This is a powerful but classy wine with plenty of concentration though note that this will likely need at least 6 years to be approachable and fully 9 to 12 to realize its full potential. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

| VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru is missing some vigour on the nose compared to its peers, pretty dark berry fruit laced with brown spices, yet lacking some vigour and verve. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite structured and Morey-like with touches of graphite towards the finish. This is a little "serious" at the moment and maybe just lacks a bit of persistence, but age should see some melioration. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. (Drink between 2025-2045). An intensely floral nose with perfumed and pure aromas of red pinot fruit gives way to textured, precise, intense and quite serious flavors that are again built on a base of firm minerality, all wrapped in a dusty, intense and mouth coating finish. This does evidence a touch of austerity but there is so much sap that buffers the structure that it stops well short of being severe. I especially like the impeccable sense of balance as well as the fact that this is very fresh for the vintage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding! |

VM 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles comes across as quite extroverted today. The focus and sheer energy of the dark fruit are what stand out most. Barthod's Veroilles has developed beautifully since I tasted it last year. (Drink between 2019-2029). Antonio Galloni.
BH 93 (1/2012): Like the '09 Fuées this is exceptionally fresh for the vintage and displays cool and especially pure high-toned red pinot fruit, dried rose petals and subtle stone hints. The very rich and voluminous soil-inflected flavors finish with a linear, intense and very firm backend. This should be lovely in time though at present, it is austere as this is a very serious effort, particularly for the vintage. (Drink starting 2017). |

VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage.
WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment).
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very composed bouquet with intense red cherries, wild strawberry and raspberry preserve aromas, offering that sensuality Burgundy-lovers seek from a Charmes-Chambertin. The palate is medium-bodied and showing the hand of the oak a little at the moment, but it is in proportion with the fruit and the finish maintains fine delineation.
VM 90-92 (1/2016): (from vines in the highest part of Mazoyères): Healthy dark red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice, anise and bitter chocolate show less floral character than the Combottes. Rich, fine-grained and deep, conveying a chocolatey ripeness but coming across as a bit earth-bound, with a slightly more rustic texture than the Combottes. This plush wine finishes with big, ripe, chewy tannins.
BH 92-95 (1/2016): (from a 1.13 ha parcel in Mazoyères that abuts the Route des Grands Crus.) A more deeply pitched and notably earthier nose also displays plenty of sauvage character. This gamy element continues onto the concentrated medium weight plus flavors that possess a caressing mouth feel despite the evident muscularity of the austere and explosive finish. This is very Mazoyères in character yet it is a bit less rustic than usual. Worth a look provided that you have the patience to cellar it. Drink 2029+. |

Alluring aromas of black raspberry, licorice and minerals show a noble, deep vegetal nuance that reminded me of a young Romanee-Conti. The youthfully unevolved middle palate displays the depth, pliancy and freshness of the vintage at its best. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with palate-saturating sweetness and mineral pungency. These 90-year-old vines were originally planted by the father of Robert Arnoux, according to Pascal, who added that the estate's vines in Suchots are even older, at 94. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 95 (1/2017): (from a .375 ha parcel situated by La Grande Rue.) An even more elegant nose of spicy and floral red and black pinot fruit is nuanced by subtle traces of sandalwood, Asian-style tea, soy and anise. There is fine concentration to the relatively powerful sappy and mouth coating flavors that are shaped by wonderfully fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, balanced and moderately austere finale. This terrific and notably powerful effort is also quite silky yet it should have zero difficulty rewarding at least 15 to 20 years of cellar time. Drink 2029+. |

VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

JM 93 (9/2017): Bright, with medium intensity. Lively nose, some raspberry and pepper notes. But there is good weight on the palate with some darker notes, the stems impart a little dryness but not too much.
WA 91 (10/2017): Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Chevillon's 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Cailles feels a little diffuse on the nose at first. Those scents of raspberry, bergamot and pomegranate feel rather disparate, as if they need to be lassoed together. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin: the fruit a little darker and the texture grainier than expected. The winemaking comes through a little more strongly than I expected here, and the finish feels a little gruff at the moment. I am sure that bottle age will ultimately smooth over the rough edges here, so just be patient. |

VM 92-94 (1/2016): Bright medium ruby Savory aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, liquid smoke and animal fur. At once silky and bracing, displaying excellent definition and lift to its flavors of blueberry, blackberry and licorice. Finishes juicy and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins and lively blackberry and violet notes. This really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate and glistens on the aftertaste. WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Vosne-Romanee 1Er Cru Malconsorts is more opulent and generous on the nose compared to the Beaumonts with blueberry and black cherry fruit, more red plum and strawberry notes evolving with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and subtle sous-bois character on the finish. There is a little new wood to be subsumed on the finish, but it has great potential and represents one of the best Malconsorts you will find this year.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): Deep, bright red. Soil-driven aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blood orange and iodiney minerality, with a complementary element of sexy oak. Juicy and intense but still youthfully imploded; totally different in grain and texture from the more pliant Beaux Monts. Finishes with terrific sappy energy and serious tannic spine. This will need a minimum of seven or eight years of cellaring.
BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) The intensely floral-suffused nose is not quite as spicy as that of the Beaux Monts but it is arguably even more complex with its layered aromas of red and dark currant, sandalwood and lilac nuances. There is Outstanding power and punch to the beautifully delineated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a beguiling texture on the complex, balanced and driving mineral-inflected finale. This is terrific but plenty of patience will be required as I suspect that this will close down once it's bottled. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (1/2017): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A subtle application of wood frames the spicy red and dark berry fruit that is liberally laced by notes of earth and game. I very much like the intensity and focused power of the concentrated medium weight flavors that display moderate rusticity and a touch of austerity on the impressively complex and persistent finale. Patience required. Drink 2024+. Outstanding!
WA 92-94 (12/2015): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru les Pruliers was showing more fruit intensity on the nose than the Porrets, the fruit more black, perhaps a little more oaky than others (although Gregory Gouges told me that this probably derives from the wooden vat after racking). The palate is very harmonious in the mouth. There are supple tannins and good density here with silky textured, sorbet-like freshness on the finish. This is a lovely wine from Gouges, one of their best in this vintage.
VM 90+ (3/2017): Red with ruby tones; a bit darker than the 2015. Very reticent nose conveys a plummy ripeness along with hints of redcurrant, earth and tobacco. Broad, dry and mouthfilling but stubbornly backward today and in need of patience. Still, the tannins are not particularly dry or hard, suggesting that this classically austere but ripe Nuits-Saint-Georges will repay patience. BH 93 (1/2017): (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) Here too there is a subtle application of wood setting off the intensely spicy and overtly sauvage aromas of mostly cassis and black raspberry aromas that are also liberally laced with warm earth and green tea nuances. The muscular big-bodied flavors possess real power and punch along with ample minerality before terminating in a hugely long, complex and well-balanced finale. As it always is this is distinctly old school in style and will definitely require extended cellaring. Drink 2026+. Outstanding!
VM 91-94 (1/2016): Dark red-ruby. Tight, medicinal aromas of black cherry, bitter chocolate and menthol. Very rich and deep, with captivating sweetness cut by medicinal menthol and minerals. Highly concentrated, dense and broad but uncompromisingly dry. Finishes very long and perfumed, with serious saline tension. This very impressive premier cru has a big tannic structure and may well close down after the bottling. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90-92 (12/2015): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains, cropped at 26 hectoliters per hectare, was just a little loose-knit on the nose when I tasted it at the domaine, perhaps missing the cohesion of the Pruliers. The palate pulls things together with slightly savory red berry fruit, fine tannin and well judged acidity. There is a chalky note coming through on the finish and a spiciness that comes through on the aftertaste. Again, classic in style, at the moment the palate is leading the way and waiting for the nose to catch up. |

There is fine richness to the succulent and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the sappy and well-balanced finale. This is a terrific Vosne villages and highly recommended. |

WA 92-94 (12/2015): The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru clearly has the best bouquet amongst the A.F. Gros range: wonderful, minerally red berry fruit, dried flowers and just a hint of warm gravel in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is very well judged and there is a creamy texture lending harmony to this Richebourg. I do think it is the most complex Richebourg I have tasted from the domaine in recent years, but it is one of the most sensual. Give it 8-10 years in bottle so that it can show what it can do.
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Once again there is also enough oak influence to notice though not enough to appreciably detract from the high-toned and overtly spicy red currant, violet and plum-suffused nose. There is a lovely minerality to the supple and forward middle weight plus flavors where the mid-palate is almost soft. This is a somewhat curious showing as I like the refinement and impressive length but the depth is at present only average. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that this will revert to its usual level of quality in time. Drink 2026+. |

VM 93 (3/2017): (13% alcohol; less than 20 hectoliters per hectare produced): Good bright red. Pretty aromas of dark cherry, menthol and dark chocolate. Rich, broad, ripe and dry; more mouthfilling than the foregoing samples but still with a light touch. (The pH here is 3.4, but Lafon noted that the '15s have lower pHs and higher acidity.) Lovely depth to the fruit, spice and soil tones. Finishes very long, with refined tannins, superb energy and excellent balance. This will probably be accessible relatively early, like the Monthelie. BH 92 (4/2017): (from 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock.) An elegant, cool and beautifully complex nose displays a discreetly spicy array of red berries plum, violets, tea and a wisp of warm earth. There is really lovely delineation to the concentrated and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a taut muscularity while remaining refined and well-balanced on the firm but not austere finale. This is often a very impressive wine chez Lafon but in 2014 it is a bit more elegant than usual. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Corton les Perrières Grand Cru has a very pure red cherry and fresh strawberry-scented bouquet with superb delineation and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, quite grippy in the mouth and with more density than the 2014 Corton la Vigne Au Saint. The fruit turns toward dark red/black at the finish that has fine salinity. It does not quite match the Corton Clos Rognet, yet it is still a grand cru in the true sense of the word. |

| BH 90-92 (1/2016): Once again there is a discreet but not invisible application of wood setting off the very Vosne-like nose of Asian-style tea, sandalwood, violet, dark berry and a lovely mix of spice elements. The spiciness continues onto the supple and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a delicious and lingering finish. This isn't as concentrated as the Boudots and it's not quite as structured either but it is certainly pretty and should drink well sooner. |

This classy and very stylish effort is still sufficiently backward to need close to another decade in a cool cellar though with that said, it's not so tightly wound as to be completely impenetrable if decanted for an hour first. I would add that I will want to see how the fruit evolves relative to the structure because based on this bottle, the nose is a bit more evolved. Drink starting 2029.

BH 88-91 (4/2016): Here too the nose is exceptionally fresh if somewhat somber with its layered array of ripe black cherry, plum, violet and earth aromas. There is fine richness to the notably round middle weight flavors that are blessed with good volume and a succulent texture where the moderately firm but well-balanced finish is again mildly rustic and austere. (Drink starting 2021).
WA 88-90 (12/2015): The 2014 Pommard Village la Croix Blanche is usually blended with Pommard Noizons...at least when it is not being destroyed 100% by hail. It has a punchy blackcurrant and iodine-tinged bouquet that is quite Volnay-like. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, a little disjointed at the moment but it will coalesce with time. There is good salinity on the finish here and the 35% new oak is nicely integrated. This should grow up to be a thoroughly decent Pommard. |

There is flat out incredible density to the extract rich and imposingly scaled flavors that completely coat the palate with sap before culminating in a velvety yet superbly intense finish that seems to just go on and on. Once again there is an overt floral component to the beautifully fresh nose that offers up notes of black raspberry, earth and discreet spice and wood nuances. There is fine detail and plenty of volume to the less obviously mineral-inflected middle weight plus flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the solid mid-palate density, all wrapped in a balanced and lingering if slightly austere finale. This too is definitely firmly structured and like the Latricières is not going to make for good early drinking. Excellent. Drink 2026+.

Fat and sweet on entry, then a bit more clenched in the middle, conveying terrific depth to the flavors of cherry, redcurrant and crushed rock. | WA 95 (10/2009): Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese leads with an unusually floral aromatic display, and the palate impression is so honeyed you'd think it were Bienenauslese (selected by bees). There is remarkable density here, with site-typical layering of flowers, orchard fruits, citrus, berries, along with smoky, peat-like, stony mineral suggestions that become more prominent as the wine takes on air. The finish is almost luxuriantly rich by Hermannshohle standards. But I am sure this wine will find more to say with time and not fall silent for 30 years or more. |

Nut paste and a savory smoked meat dimension contribute complexity to this lusciously lingering Auslese, but one that " like its Brucke counterpart' does not capture the dynamic spirit of the 2010 vintage to quite the extent of its Spatlese siblings, and would benefit (might well, in time) from a bit more focus. Still, this will impress regardless for at least two decades. |

WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now.
VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

Candied lime rind and marzipan; lily and honeysuckle; white peach and salted caramel inform this wine's haunting nose and rich yet buoyant palate, with the mouthwatering savor that characterized the corresponding Spatlese undiminished. This needs some time in bottle to better focus, and it will be interesting to see whether it develops more sense of cut and brightness. But it's already irresistible, and almost sure to prove worth following for a quarter century or more. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. |

WA 99 (10/2009): The over-ripe pear and quince featured in other nobly sweet wines of this collection are very much present in Donnhoff's 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, along with aromas of distilled gentian, gardenia, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, and white truffle. The intensity of inner-mouth perfume here - orchard fruit, floral, and herbal distillates - is nearly beyond belief. Pear nectar, quince preserves, apple jelly, liquid gardenia, brown spices, and a certain saline and smoky suggestions of things mineral inform a finish of trance-inducing duration. This amazing elixir - harvested largely in the Turmchen section of the site - should be worthy of 40 years cellaring. When Donnhoff laughingly referred to this as the year of Felsenberg, he was not in fact kidding, nor was he referring just to the sheer number of bottlings!
