| BH 94 (4/2013): A broad-ranging nose of spice, smoke, black tea, earth and sauvage hints add considerable depth to the dark berry fruit and cassis aromas. There is strikingly good intensity and real power to the overtly muscular big-bodied flavors that ooze a fine dry extract that does an excellent job of buffering the firm and robust tannins on the suave and textured finale that also delivers superbly length. VM 94 (4/2014): Good dark red. Expressive, high-toned nose shows a leesy complexity to the aromas of cherry, flowers, soil and what Patrick Landanger called "blood peach." The palate offers uncanny energy and perfume, with sweet fruit lifted by spices and flowers. Lovely juiciness and class here. A wonderful Corton grand cru. Landanger did a much better job timing the harvest here than he did in 2012.
BH 93 (4/2013): ( from a .5 ha parcel). A slightly riper set of red and black pinot fruit aromas enjoys added latitude by the presence of strong earth, wet stone and a touch of the sauvage. There is a sleek muscularity to the rich, intense and big-bodied flavors that also exude a fine minerality that adds a sense of lift and energy on the focused, intense and impressively persistent finish. As it almost always is, this is quite a refined wine in the context of the universe of Corton grands crus and this impression is also abetted by the presence of very fine-grained tannins. | BH 94 (4/2016): In contrast to the nose of the Bressandes this is more obviously wooded and while it's not enough to dominate the more overtly sauvage-inflected dark berry fruit, earth and spice aromas, it's not subtle. There is outstanding density and even more muscle present on the even bigger and richer flavors that also possess a velvety mouth feel thanks to the copious amount of dry extract present on the sappy, complex and very serious finale. This is a big wine with firm tannins to accompany it yet the extract is such that it should be more than capable of not only absorbing the wood treatment but buffering the tannic spine as well. Note well though that this is not a wine to drink in its youth. (Drink starting 2029). |

| BH 93 (4/2016): The attractively fresh, cool and markedly restrained nose only grudgingly reveals its more deeply pitched nose of plum, dark currant, earth, forest floor and discreet game hints. There is a sleek muscularity to the intense and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess evident minerality on the structured finale that is quite firm but not especially austere. I very much like this and it is recommended provided you have the patience to cellar it. (Drink starting 2026). |

| VM 95+ (10/2019): Saturated dark red-ruby. Deep, powerful aromas of kirsch, menthol, licorice and dark chocolate, along with a faint musky nuance. Wonderfully rich and enveloping wine, with its distinctly dark fruit flavors accented by pepper and spices. At once dense and energetic owing to its sappy minerality and surprising back-end acidity, this wine is nonetheless a bit of a bruiser, as its fully ripe but serious mouth-clenching tannins are going to need time to resolve. But the wine's impressive salty, mineral-driven persistence suggests that it will be long-lived. (13.5% alcohol; September 6 harvest; 35 h/h produced; 3.36 pH; d'Angerville attributed the unusually dark color of this wine to drought conditions in Volnay from mid-June to early August). WA 95 (4/2018): The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux is fabulous, wafting from the glass with notes of wild berries, orange peel, cinnamon, rich soil and espresso. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and layered, with a lovely line of bright acidity, fine-grained tannins, sappy energy, and terrific depth and tension at the core. This is a great Clos des Epeneaux from Paul Zinetti.
BH 94 (4/2018): Here the nose is notably riper than the 2016 version yet it manages to retain good freshness to the pure red berry fruit, earthy, floral and spice-suffused aromas. The decidedly dense, tautly muscular and powerful broad-shouldered flavors are underpinned by notably firm tannins and outstanding length on the beautifully complex finale that exhibits just enough warmth to warrant mentioning. This is quite clearly built-to-age and it's going to need it. In a word, impressive. (Drink starting 2030).
VM 92+ (11/2018): The 2015 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru takes time to coalesce in the glass, eventually revealing black cherries, raspberries, autumn leaves and a touch of incense. It is understated and classic in style, but seems to grow with aeration. The crisp palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin and plenty of tension – a bit linear and strict at the moment, though I suspect this will age with real style once it has gotten through its adolescence. Do not touch for 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2023-2045). Neal Martin. |

VM 97 (11/2018): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a tightly coiled bouquet of high-toned red fruit, raspberry, red currant, pressed violets and iris, and later a hint of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, coming across as fresh and lively but very linear and strict at the moment - more like a Clos Saint-Denis in style. But there is a nobility about this wine, and it is certainly persistent. This is one of several wines that shot way past my estimation from barrel. Bravo. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. BH 94 (1/2018): An overtly sauvage nose reflects notes of humus, earth and very ripe dark currant aromas. The big, powerful and impressively concentrated flavors possess absolutely outstanding length and richness. This mouth-coating effort is exceptionally firm and unlike the Charmes, this is not likely to drink well before at least 10 years of bottle age and it may require fully 20 to reach its full prime. Either way, this is really very impressive. Drink starting 2033. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2017): (100% vendange entier; the Boillots work these vines in Grand Maupertuis themselves): Saturated deep red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and rose petal communicate striking fruity lift for young Clos Vougeot. Very rich, sappy and deep, but but with no sign of overripeness and markedly different in style from the Côte de Beaune samples that preceded it in my tasting, partly due to its whole-cluster treatment. WA 93 (4/2018): From vines planted in the 1950s, the 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières is a one of the highlights of the range this year, wafting from the glass with a fragrant and projected bouquet of orange rind, potpourri, plum, raspberry and incipient forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with a rich attack, succulent acids, an ample chassis of fine-grained tannins and a long, saline finish. A superb Lavières that has yet to shut down.
BH 92 (4/2017): Discreet wood and menthol notes frame the very ripe aromas of cassis, violet, earth and spice. There is once again excellent richness, volume and sappy dry extract to the middle weight plus flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the refined and impressively long finish. This is certainly quite ripe but there is good tension and this should amply repay extended cellaring. (Drink starting 2025).
VM 88+ (1/2018): Full, dark red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and savory soil tones. Quite silky, ripe and chocolatey; in fact, very rich and a bit aggressive for Savigny-lès-Beaune, and just this side of heavy. Supple and broad but without any easy sweetness, finishing with substantial tannins. This savory, chocolatey, rather powerful wine is in a less fruity style than the estate's 2016s and comes across as a bit youthfully disjointed and in need of patience. (Incidentally, Chandon de Briailles also bottled a tiny quantity of this wine with any added sulfur, but even this cuvée has only 36 ppm of total sulfur, according to Claude de Nicolay.) On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, supple and satiny, with a deceptively open-knit, succulent profile that I suspect is more a function of the wine's structural finesse than it is any lack of seriousness. This is an elegant, classically balanced Clos de Bèze that may well prove to be a sleeper of the vintage.

I like the purity here, and the oak is beautifully integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, judicious acidity and wonderful precision as it crescendoes in a detailed finish. Yes, there is a veneer of new oak to be absorbed, but there is enormous potential. Long-term and quite regal. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin.

This is certainly an imposing wine yet the mouthfeel is one of class and grace and interestingly for such a young Bèze, there is virtually no austerity. Wow. |

There is a caressing mouth feel to the rich, round and delicious middle weight plus flavors that tighten up significantly on the serious and youthfully austere finish that makes clear that this will not be an especially good candidate for early drinking. WA 90-92 (12/2016): The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru comes from four different lieux-dits from north to south of the appellation. It has an attractive bouquet with black cherries, bilberry and orange blossom; the oak neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, masculine in style with subtle tobacco notes infusing the slightly broody and yet fresh and tensile finish. It deserves a couple of years in bottle and should evolve into a very attractive Morey-Saint-Denis.
BH 90-92 (1/2017): A ripe yet agreeably fresh nose features notes of plum, spice, earth and pretty floral nuances. There is both good richness and punch to the medium-bodied and fleshy flavors that tighten up significantly on the overtly powerful and entirely serious finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. (Drink starting 2027).
VM 89-92 (1/2017): Pungent spices and minerals on the nose, but with a more subdued fruit element than the village version. A step up in concentration and density in the mouth but quite backward in the early going and dominated by its structure. Finishes with firm-edged tannins and a strong spicy character. | BH 92 (1/2018): There is just enough reduction present to push the ripe mix of earthy dark fruit and underbrush aromas to the background so I would suggest decanting this for half an hour first if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is ample dry extract on the robust, muscular and intense flavors that display a distinct gaminess on the textured and solidly long and dusty finish that is supported by ripe tannins. This will require at least a decade for this full-boded, rustic and very serious effort to come together. Drink 2027+. |

Juicy and intensely flavored, offering excellent definition to its penetrating flavors of raspberry, cherry and saline minerality. Shows limited early sweetness but the wine's long, slowly mounting finish features dusty, well-buffered tannins and terrific saline energy. Offering up a deep bouquet in which aromas of cherries, cassis and plums mingle with nuances of dark chocolate, licorice and cedar, it's a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine with considerable amplitude and structure, underpinned by tangy acids. While the wine is already elegant and harmonious, its fine-grained but firm tannins are abundant: given the track record of Gaunoux's wines, I wouldn't expect this to show all its cards until its 20th birthday.

WA 89-91 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambolle Musigny la Combe d'Orveaux has a fragrant bouquet with raspberry preserve, wild strawberry and mulberry scents - not the most complex you will come across in Chambolle, but I appreciate the purity of fruit. The palate is well balanced with red cherry and mulberry, gentle and harmonious, an easygoing and self-effacing Chambolle-Musigny that should give drinking pleasure soon after bottling.
VM 88-91 (1/2017): Palish red. Like a pungent salad of red berries on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. Vibrant pomegranate and cranberry flavors are framed by juicy acidity and complicated by a lightly savory quality. The resounding red-fruit finish is lifted by a note of crushed flowers. BH 87-90 (1/2017): Here the expressive nose is at once more elegant and noticeably fresher with aromas of both red and dark currant, violet and a pretty hint of spice. There is good minerality and much better verve to the delicious appealingly textured medium weight flavors that deliver solid length on the reasonably complex finish. This should be approachable young if desired. (Drink starting 2019). |

| BH 92-94 (4/2017): (the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could retain the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Prominent, but not dominant, oak and menthol characters are present on the ultra-spicy nose of attractively fresh red and dark cherry aromas that are trimmed in tea, sandalwood and hoisin nuances. The bigger, richer and more mineral-driven flavors also coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the overtly powerful and driving finish that goes on and on. This is not a huge version of the appellation but the focus and sense of harmony are certainly admirable. Patience required. Drink 2030+. |

Silky on entry, then densely packed but weightless in the mid-palate, displaying outstanding inner-mouth spicy, floral lift to its intense red fruit and saline mineral flavors. A creamy, utterly seamless old-vines Chapelle with extremely refined tannins and inexorable subtle rising length. Outstanding--but will this wine shut down hard in bottle? Really captures the best qualities of the vintage without sacrificing its typicity. (Drink between 2026-2040)
BH 94 (4/2018): This displays noticeable wood influence though here it's more in the form of menthol than toast though it's not so much as to materially impede the appreciation of the notably ripe red cherry and overtly floral-scented nose where ample hints of the sauvage and warm earth eventually appear. There is remarkably good concentration as the old vine sap is immediately evident whilst coating the palate and pushing the markedly firm tannic spine to the background on the powerful and intensely mineral-driven if noticeably warm finale. Despite the impressive size, weight and power this is actually more refined than usual but even so, it's going to require a very long snooze in an appropriately cool cellar. In sum, this is seriously good Chapelle. (Drink starting 2035). |

The velvety yet quite powerful big-bodied flavors also brim with sappy dry extract that pushes the otherwise notably firm tannic spine to the background on the built-to-age, balanced and wonderfully persistent finale. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a voluminous and extravagant bouquet with blooms of red berry fruit, although I found myself more drawn to the complex and intellectual Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, assertive Clos de la Roche, quite saline in the mouth with a feisty, spicy finish. This is a fine grand cru from Louis Jadot, though not one of their top releases this vintage.
VM 90-92 (1/2017): (a blend of purchased wine from two sources): Good full red. Aromas of cherry, herbs and oak show a youthfully medicinal quality. Powerful but a touch dry; this strikes me a bit energetically extracted at the expense of the vintage's potential silkiness. The medicinal menthol quality is complicated by notes of brown spices and earth, but the wine's primary fruit is very much in the background today. Finishes dry and imploded, with strong tannins. Not my favorite style of Clos de la Roche. Jadot has eight barrels of this wine, four made via a classic vinification, according to Barnier, and four using more modern, extractive techniques. Wonderfully pure, inviting nose combines strawberry, raspberry, rose petal, spices, white pepper and blood orange: I might have picked this essence of Burgundy as a Chambolle-Musigny! Plush, silky and fine-grained but tactile and substantial as well, boasting terrific energy for its vintage. (The vines benefited from the cooler temperatures and well-timed rainfall in August, which enable the wine to retain freshness, noted Frederic Barnier.) The wine's very primary red berry, spice and floral flavors display seductive sweetness but a strong element of saline minerality accentuates the overall dry impression. A great wine in the making, showing an almost peppery vibrancy today; I would not be surprised if this shut down in the bottle in the near future. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (11/2018): The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru has a more tightly knit bouquet than Fourrier and Brunco Clair's own Clos St.-Jacques: very pure and focused, perhaps not quite as detailed and mineral-driven as the latter, but attractive all the same. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and impressive depth, and quite grippy at the moment, if not quite delivering the details and nuance or the same mineralité as the best Clos Saint-Jacques on the finish. BH 93-95 (4/2017): Firm reduction flattens the nose though there is a lovely sense of both freshness and tension to the colossally constituted flavors that drench the palate with sap that once again renders the notably firm tannic spine all but invisible for the moment on the impressively persistent if slightly warm finish. I suspect that in time the structure will become more apparent but this is one concentrated, indeed massive GE, that isn't elegant but does avoid rusticity. Drink 2033+. Don't miss!
VM 91-93 (1/2017): (not Jadot's vinification; done with a portion of whole clusters): Bright, full red. Dark berry aromas are dominated in the early going by a strong note of licorice pastille. Black fruit flavors show a juicy quality but are very tightly wound and medicinal, even a bit muscular for a young Grands-Echezeaux. I find the tannins a bit tough and dry. Rough going today, and not showing the normal elegance of this grand cru. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (1/2018): Bright medium ruby-red. Purple fruits, licorice and violet on the nose; a bit darker and less plummy than the Champans. Then wonderfully sweet, seamless and mouthfilling, offering captivating inner-mouth perfume and outstanding pliancy for a wine with a pH of 3.35. Tightens up a bit on the back end, finishing with serious but suave, harmonious tannins and subtle rising length. This wine is a good bet to go on in bottle for two decades, but will it go through a dumb stage along the way? Stephen Tanzer.
BH 92-95 (4/2017): ( from 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock.) This is also brilliantly spicy with its ultra-pure and pretty essence of black raspberry, floral and warm-earth suffused aromas. Like the Champans there is excellent underlying tension supporting the broad-shouldered flavors that are even more mineral-driven on the muscular, taut and driving finish. This wine always ages well and typically needs quite a bit of it and this terrific effort will be no exception. This could well rival the 1999, 2005 and 2010 versions in time. Drink 2030+. BH 90 (1/2018): A notably ripe yet agreeably fresh nose offers up notes of various dark berries, spice, floral elements and discreet earth nuances. The notably rich medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel thanks to the solid mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a velvety yet punchy and refreshing finale that is sufficiently firm to warrant holding this for at least a few years first. A very ripe, almost roasted style with terrific chewy concentration--and more juicy purple-fruit lift than the nose would suggest. WA 94-96 (12/2016): The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from the Mazoyères sector, has a gorgeous bouquet in the making with joyful red berry fruit mixed with cold stone and subtle oyster shell aromas, the 30% new oak deftly integrated and barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, vibrant opening. There are layers of tart red cherry fruit, crushed strawberry, citrus peel and quince fanning out wonderful towards the finish, which exerts a gentle but insistent grip. What a fabulous Charmes-Chambertin from Laurent and Hubert Lignier.
BH 91-93 (1/2017): (from a tiny .10 ha parcel of vines in Mazoyères.) A hint of wood spice frames brooding if very fresh and layered aromas of red fruits, earth, underbrush and humus. The rich, naturally sweet, sappy and again, beautifully textured medium full-bodied flavors are quite round and balanced yet the finish is almost robust and decidedly powerful. This is an interesting wine as it is at once succulent yet very serious. Drink 2027+. |

BH 92-94 (1/2017): A pungent nose consists of wood and reduction today. Otherwise there is excellent volume and an overt muscularity to the powerful, rich and imposing flavors that brim with minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a textured and velvety finish that is notably firm but not hard and I very much like the overall depth on the balanced and beautifully persistent finish. This will require at least some patience yet should drink well after only 6 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2027).
VM 92-94 (1/2017): Healthy medium red. Initially deeply pitched, earth-bound aromas of very ripe strawberry and raspberry showed pungent stony minerality with aeration. Fatter, fleshier and sweeter than the young Clos Saint-Denis, offering more volume but less detail to its red fruit flavors in the early going. Finishes very long, with fine-grained tannins and a surprisingly juicy quality. The Clos Saint-Denis is finer while this wine is more muscular. Stephen Tanzer. |

Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

This is almost as elegant as the Griotte but with a different aromatic profile that runs more toward a slightly darker range of fruit, earth, game and discreet violet notes where there is again plenty of wood influence. There is good refinement to the pure and beautifully detailed big-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long but not especially austere and slightly warm finale. A classic Roty Charmes. Drink 2030+.
VM 94-97 (1/2017): Full ruby-red. Very pure but youthfully brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet and minerals. Strikingly sappy and primary, conveying near-painful intensity to its tightly wound black fruit and saline mineral flavors. This complete, impeccably balanced Charmes-Chambertin expands spectacularly on the rising, palate-staining back end, saturating the taste buds and leaving the mouth vibrating. A perfect blueprint for a 25+-year wine. A good portion of these vines date back to the vineyard's original post-Phylloxera graftings in 1881, but as the family has never used pesticides or chemical fertilizers these old vines still routinely yield a healthy crop--35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015. BH 98 (1/2018): (100% new wood.) Here too there is just enough oak to mention but once again it's not really enough to impair the purity of the distinctly cool and ultra-spicy red currant, underbrush, sandalwood, lilac and plenty of earth aromas. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a similar level of minerality that is borderline pungent and it informs the explosively long, firm and very serious finish. This notably powerful, but not really austere effort, displays magnificent potential and if it develops its usual degree of complexity over time it should merit the upper end of my projected range. But as structured and firm as it is, I suspect that this will drink well after only 6 to 8 years of age thanks to the incredible abundance of dry extract. Drink 2037+.
VM 97-99 (1/2017): (12.8% natural alcohol chaptalized to 13.2%; Rousseau presented this wine before his Clos de Bèze because he finds the latter wine much more oaky in the early going): Dark, bright red with ruby highlights. Crushed black cherry, raspberry and spice aromas are lifted by a pungent floral topnote--"very ripe for this wine," notes Rousseau. At once utterly young and almost exotic, conveying extraordinary intensity and layered texture to its slightly high-toned flavors of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, licorice and spices. An element of menthol reserve contributes to the wine's impression of brooding energy. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and slowly mounting, explosive palate-staining length. WA 97-99 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru took a while to open in the glass, as it is prone towards. It has a very elegant bouquet once again, the fruit an equal mixture of red and black, a touch of cold flint in the background accompanied by blood orange and satsuma that emerge with time. The palate is blessed with beguiling symmetry and power, counterpoised by the killer line of acidity, leading to a mineral-rich finish that goes on forever. This is another Outstanding Chambertin from Rousseau that wine lovers will doubtlessly be fighting over for years to come. And you know what? I wouldn't blame them. |

BH 97 (1/2018): (from 3 different parcels that total 2 ha.) Interestingly this is aromatically quite similar to the nose of the Latricières though there is just a bit more wood in evidence plus a hint of menthol. By contrast there is more size, weight, power and muscle to the big-bodied and equally mineral-driven flavors that also brim with copious amounts of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the very firm but not hard tannic backbone on the driving, hugely long and youthfully austere finale. This is an exquisitely poised Chambertin that is very much built-to-age and is going to need a minimum of 10 years and once again, is a wine that should last for decades. In a word, brilliant. Drink 2035+.
VM 96 (1/2018): Full, dark red. A bit less wild than the Latricières on the nose but a fabulous soil expression nonetheless, offering aromas of raspberry, spices, leather, dried flowers, smoke and cocoa powder. Slightly timid on first pour, this utterly seamless wine opens with air to offer Outstanding volume without any easy sweetness or undue weight. Can a wine be both elegant and almost too big for the mouth? This very generous but rather laid-back Chambertin finishes with inexorable, slowly building length and noble tannins that saturate the sides of the tongue and teeth. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 95-98 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) Like the Amoureuses this too is kaleidoscopically spicy with its broad-ranging nose of red cherry, cassis, plum, violet, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and hoisin. The velvety and mouth coating imposingly-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors are also blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that coat the palate on the highly seductive finish that delivers fantastically good length on the youthfully austere, backward and immaculately well-balanced finale. This too is going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it emerges. Drink 2035+. Don't miss!
VM 94-97 (1/2017): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and bitter chocolate are lifted by the most pungent minerality of this range. Combines compelling sweetness and density, but with a finesse of texture that gives this wine an improbably light touch. Remarkably dense but reserved wine, with purple berry liqueur and mineral flavors conveying terrific lift. Easily the best of these 2015s, finishing with a juicy whiplash of flavor. Here the tannins arrive very late and are perfectly integrated with the wine's fruit and soil elements. Still, this vibrant wine is extremely backward and unevolved in the early going and will require long aging. Winemaker François Millet expects to do a very light fining at the bottling. WA 95-97 (12/2016): The 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially more introspective compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Predominantly black fruit here with blueberry developing in the glass, there is a slight earthiness in character that shimmies towards floral scents as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and more salinity than then Bonnes Mares or the Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses. It feels crunchy and fresh in the mouth with plenty of blueberry and blackberry towards the long and persistent finish. This is an Outstanding Musigny Vieilles Vignes of substance that will age over 30-40 years. |

VM 97 (11/2018): The 2015 Musigny Grand Les Cru has gorgeous red berry fruit on a complex, engaging nose laced with sous-bois/tertiary scents and just a hint of burnt toast or charcoal with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sublime tannic structure, completely harmonious and symmetrical, fanning out almost nonchalantly toward the finish with wondrous red berry fruit and minerals. JM 97 (10/2018): Fine bright medium deep red purple. The bouquet is reticent at first. On the palate a sensual richness, very good length, fresh finish from the stems, and a gorgeous persistence.
BH 94-96 (1/2017): Here too the nose is reduced and quite toasty and all that can be discerned are background floral hints. Otherwise there is excellent size, weight and punch to the more obviously mineral-driven flavors that possess notably better precision and a much, much finer mouth feel thanks to the super-fine grained tannins while delivering even better depth and length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. I very much like the sense of Zen-like harmony here and this should effortlessly age for decades. This too is a "buy and forget you own it" wine. Drink 2035+. |

WA 95 (3/2016): The gold-capsuled 2014 Riesling Graacher Himmelreich Auslese GK (AP #18) represents a botrytis selection and offers highly delicate fruit and flinty-slate aromas, where tropical fruit aromas mingle with wet stone flavors. The attack on the palate is racy and piquant; the wine is complex and very pure, highly elegant and finesse-full, yet intense and concentrated, with ripe pineapple flavors and a pure, salty, very mineral finish. This is highly delicate Riesling with a complex terroir expression.
VM 95 (11/2016): This non-auction gold-capsule bottling delivers a multifaceted nose featuring candied lime peel, apple and quince jellies, heliotrope and an intriguing meld of yeasty stale bread, florally honeyed and subtly truffly manifestations of botrytis. The creamy, expansive palate reprises all of the aforementioned elements, but also introduces generous parallel juiciness of fresh apple and lime. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and precise, with lovely depth, ripe, vibrant acids, great focus and grip and a very, very long, pure and energetic finish. This will need at least a decade in the cellar to start to stir, but it will be a great Goldkapsel once it is ready to drink and will live for a very, very long time! Great juice. 2026-2085+. |

| VM 93 (6/2017): Apple and quince are coolingly laced with mint and wintergreen (decidedly reminiscent of the corresponding Bernkasteler) but also, quite unexpectedly, joined by banana, mango and muskmelon for an unusually exotic expression of Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett that is as luscious in the mouth as it is heady on the nose. Lily and heliotrope contribute to the wine’s head-turning aromatic intensity and their inner-mouth perfume to the allure of a subtly creamy palate. For all of its unusually advanced sense of ripeness for a Kabinett, this projects remarkable delicacy and a focused sense of stone, fruit and floral interface in its lingering finish. VM 93 (1/2018): Cheesy fermentative overtones give way to a site-typical amalgam of fresh apple garlanded in honeysuckle and heliotrope. This is another of those Prüm Kabinetts that is watery in a positive sense of that word, combining watercolor-like transparency and wash of flavor with delicacy and refreshment. As with the corresponding Graacher, the finishing sense of wet stone and floral perfume is striking, and here a mouthwatering hint of salinity adds significantly to the appeal. | WA 91 (2/2012): Emphasizing the bitter side of the vanilla bean as well as toasted nuts and cyanic apple pit, the Prum 2010 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese A.P. #14 thereby generates a fascinating contrast with its apple jelly and honey richness. Alkaline and wet stone notes - beginning already in the nose - enhance that contrast. Nut oils, honey and apple reprise in a lusciously lingering finish. Less charming, refreshing, exuberant, or focused in finish than the corresponding Graacher, this Wehlener will almost certainly need a longer time to show its true potential; but one can rest assured based on one of Germany’s most certifiable track-records that at least a quarter century of pleasure is in the offing here. (I did not have opportunity to taste the corresponding auction cuvee, A.P. #26.) |
