|
| |
| JM 92-96 (5/2021): The Perrières is the most complete white in the range, with again an opulent side but racy too orange blossom and passion fruit just dusting the top of the wine. Sweet and succulent vanilla notes. |

Meursault Rougeots Ex-Domaine |
$84.99 |
18 |
|
| |
| JM 89/92 (5/2021): More perfumed than the straight Meursault, showing a little more colour, ripe but lively. Then stiffens up behind, some thyme, a fatter finish behind the chiselled front end. This should develop interesting character further down the road. |
|

Monthelie Blanc Ex-Domaine |
$45.99 |
17 |
|
| |
| JM 88-90 (5/2021): A blend from Combe Danay, a cooler hillside location and a bit in Les Sous-Courts on flatter land below the village. Tense and lively again, like the Bourgogne Blanc, if not quite so obviously intense, with lemon and fresh apricot notes. |

| JM 89-92 (5/2021): From two plots in one lieu-dit, Les Reuchaux. The sample was taken from a rare new barrel, and offers gorgeous intensity, a pure mineral backbone, some sandalwood which comes from the barrel, and very good length. |

| |
| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru is tasted from two barrels. It demonstrates wonderful grace and precision with mineral-infused cranberry and wild strawberry fruit. There is a sense of vitality and sophistication here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin. The oak is beautifully integrated, notes of orange rind and even just a subtle touch of honey towards the relatively powerful and sustained finish that just feels audacious. Wonderful. Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2019): There is a touch of herbal tea character to the spice and ultra-fresh red and dark currant scents that include a pretty floral wisp. The mouth feel of the middle weight flavors is completely different as it can be accurately described as one of lace and grace, all wrapped in a nicely complex and lingering finish that flashes just a bit of youthful austerity. Drink 2027+. |

|
| |
| BH 93 (10/2019): Bright medium red. Highly perfumed aromas and flavors of raspberry, cherry, licorice and flowers. On the lean side but with firm acidity giving cut to the aromatic palate. All about perfume today, and a bit dry on the back end. A second bottle showed a similar nose, but with some darker fruits emerging with air. It also offered considerably more mid-palate pliancy of texture as well as more stuffing to buffer its tannins. The finish is quite fresh, with nicely integrated acidity. My score, needless to say, is for the second bottle. (13.3% alcohol; the Clos des Ducs vines were harvested on September 7; 42 hectoliters per hectare produced; 3.63 pH; bottled three weeks before our tasting) (Drink between 2022-2038). Stephen Tanzer. |

| JM 96-96 (11/2018): This is Mazoyères really but Cyprien Arlaud thinks he makes it like a Charmes, with quite late picking for tannin ripeness. In fact there are three picking dates according to the age of vines (25 to 75 year old) and some whole bunch vinification. Dense black purple colour and a richer attack to the nose. There is a solid succulent chunk of flesh, red plus fresh black fruit, an oaky aspect behind, very long finish, needing more time. Tasted: November 2018. |

| |
| BH 91-94 (1/2019): (from a .44 ha parcel of 90+ year old vines situated directly across from Chambertin; the yields are so low and the vines so exposed that Bachelet says that he always harvests this parcel first.) This was the only wine in the range to display any appreciable reduction along with a background dollop of wood. The velvety and highly seductive medium weight flavors possess an abundance of dry extract that easily buffers the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the lingering and well-balanced finish. This will need to develop more depth to merit the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material appears to be present such that it will be possible. Drink 2029+. |

| |
| JM 96-98 (11/2018): Powerful weighty colour. The nose is not there at first, just a sense of weight and wood. Then some delicate dark raspberry notes start to emerge. A little sterner than the lacy grace of Clos de Bèze. Magical and detailed little dark fruits, bilberries, a feeling of very small berries. This wins in the middle of the palate whereas the Clos de Bèze showed better out of the blocks. Dense, darker slightly more concentrated fruit at the back, a little closer to black, then the stems provide refreshment for the finale. Tasted: November 2018. |

| |
| VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Fixin Les Clos comes from a climat close to the Marsannay border, from one parcel of 1.30 hectares consisting of vines from 10 to 90 years old. It sees 20% new oak. It has an engaging, quite exuberant bouquet of vibrant red fruit infused with hints of violet; the oak is deftly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little tighter than the Fixin Village and with more backbone and volume toward the finish. Amélie Berthaut told me that she will probably bottle this later than the Fixin Village, and I suspect it will gain a little density by then. One to watch. (Drink between 2021-2029). Neal Martin. |

| BH 89 (1/2020): (a 1 ha blend of Groseilles, Baudes, Noirots and Gruenchers, which are all bunched together, geographically speaking.) A softly spicy and more floral-suffused nose is quite high-toned with its aromas of the airy essence of red pinot fruit and pomegranate. There is equally good vibrancy to the delicious and slightly denser medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel as well as a sneaky long finish. This pretty, lacy and mineral-suffused effort should also drink well young though I would be inclined to give it a few years of cellaring in the hopes that better depth will develop. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 95 (4/2019): (from Chambolle fruit.) Here too the nose is quite restrained with its admirably pure aromas of red cherry, dark currant, spice and earth along with notes of violet and lavender. I very much like the sense of underlying tension to the succulent, indeed even juicy, medium weight plus flavors that exude a subtle salinity on the tautly muscular and firm finish that flashes just a hint of youthful austerity. This isn't quite as complex as the Chambertin but it's close and it may well close the gap over time as this is also very clearly structured for mid to even longer-term keeping. Drink 2035+. |

| BH 94 (4/2019): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A brooding deeply pitched and softly spicy nose reflects plenty of earth and sauvage characters to the dark berry aromas that are trimmed in soft wood nuances. There is excellent size, weight and power to the muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the imposingly structured and youthfully austere finish that is sneaky long. This is a big 2017 that is supported by chewy but not really rustic tannins that make clear that at least some patience is advisable. Drink 2032+. |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a focused bouquet of dark cherries with blueberry and briary touches and well-integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate delivers sappy blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine delineation and good grip. Quite spicy and peppery toward the finish. This is a vivacious Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of matière . Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. JD 93 (9/2021): Light to mid purple, there are some slightly herbaceous vegetal touches which should clear, and indeed they do to show ripe purple fruit with excellent clarity. There’s density and complexity, charcoal and chocolate, making an interesting complex wine. |

| VM 91 (1/2019): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a very well defined, floral bouquet of seductive, elegant red cherry and crushed strawberry aromas, a level up from the Village Cru. The pure, poised palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannin and a light spicy note toward the elegant finish. It reminds me of Mugneret-Gibourg, which is no bad thing in my book. VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a fresh, tertiary nose with perhaps just a touch of brettanomyces, though it opens nicely with aeration, a pleasant ferrous element coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with sappy red berry fruit, fine delineation and a prudent sprinkling of white pepper toward the finish. This is a well-crafted Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of personality. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2023-2042). Neal Martin. BH 92-94 (1/2019): Relatively generous wood fights a bit with the otherwise cool and pure aromas of extract of cassis, plum, humus, earth and suggestions of the sauvage. As is usually the case chez Chevillon, this is a very powerful wine with imposing size and weight with fine mid-palate density thanks to the abundant dry extract that also helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine that really emerges on the beautifully long finale. (Drink starting 2033). WA 93-95 (1/2019): As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and concentrated, with imposingly broad shouldered structure and a deep, reserved core. Again, patience will be required and rewarded. |

| BH 93 (4/2019): (from two parcels that total .39 ha; they are worked by horse because there is no path for a tractor; 40% whole clusters.) The higher whole cluster percentage is evident as the nose is exceptionally floral with its cool and pure aromas of rose petal, violet and lilac along with plenty of spice elements. The restrained, focused and beautifully well-delineated medium weight flavors evidence good muscle on the firm, structured and very clearly built-to-age finish. This is textbook Petits Monts. Drink 2032+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 92 (1/2020): An exceptionally pretty and, similar to the Malconsorts, somewhat sweet nose combines notes of lavender, rose petal, violet, red currant and a whiff of orange pekoe tea. There is good if not special mid-palate density to the overtly intense flavors that terminate in a dusty, austere and reasonably powerful finish where the tannins are a bit spiky. My sense is though that with a few years of age they will round off and render the finish more harmonious. Drink 2029+. |

| BH 87-89 (1/2019): An exceptionally fresh and very pretty nose offers up notes of both red and blue pinot fruit, lavender and a trace of spice nuances. The supple, lacy and seductively textured middle weight flavors flash a touch of minerality before culminating in a dusty finish where a hint of bitter pit fruit character surfaces. I like the balance and this should drink well early but age over the mid-term too. |

| VM 86-88 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village has a straightforward bouquet of brambly red fruit laced with light woodland aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin and nice balance, though I would like a little more weight and flamboyance on the finish. Neal Martin. |

| BH 90 (1/2020): This too is a very ripe wine in the context of the 2017 vintage with its lightly wooded nose of plum, spice, earth and forest floor. As usual, there is more power and mid-palate concentration to the sappy medium-bodied flavors that also exude a discreet minerality onto the more complex and slightly more structured finale. As it usually is, this is an excellent Gevrey villages and well worth your interest. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2019): An intensely earthy nose is comprised by notably ripe dark currant aromas that are cut with underbrush, spice and a whiff of wood toast and the sauvage. There is an attractive freshness and plenty of vivacity to the velvet-textured full-bodied and overtly muscular flavors that possess terrific punch on the beautifully long, youthfully austere and notably firm finish. I like the overall sense of complexity and this too should age effortlessly. Drink 2035+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| VM 92 (1/2022): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru is very perfumed on the nose, offering confit-like red berry fruit, blood orange and raspberry jam. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine delineation, nice poise and a grippy finish. There’s nice sapidity here, and the constituent parts are all in pace – they just need time to knit together. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2025-2045). Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru presents a clean, crisp bouquet of wild strawberry and raspberry fruit that blossoms in the glass, becoming more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine acidity and a nice underlying bitterness, though there is a very slight attenuation on the finish. Otherwise, this is a fine, classically styled Nuits Saint-Georges. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Neal Martin. JM 92 (9/2021): Concentrated deep purple, with significant energy, potentially very exciting. Lush, surprisingly high acidity and not quite the complexity I hoped for. More red than black, possibly picked a tad early for this site. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2019): (from a 1.08 ha mix of younger and older vines that average about 50+ years of age.) Slightly riper aromas of plum liqueur, violet, warm earth and plenty of sauvage character lead to intense and notably dense broad-shouldered flavors that display first-rate power on the serious and youthfully austere finish. This is a big wine in the context of what is typical for the 2017 vintage and should age effortlessly. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! |

| BH 86-88 (1/2019): The fruit profile is the similar though with much more earth influence that can also be found on the slightly more concentrated if still relatively light flavors that offer a bit more depth and persistence on the mildly rustic finale. This should drink well early. |

| VM 87-89 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village, matured in 40% new oak, has an appealing bouquet of vibrant red fruit, revealing just a touch of meat jus in the background. The palate is smooth on the entry with supple tannin and fine acidity; brown spices surface toward the second half. There is good depth here, although a touch of heat on the back palate mars the finish. I will be cautious for now. Neal Martin. |

| VM 88-90 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanee Les Chalandins comes from vines more than 60 years of age and sees 40% new oak. It has a ripe, candied bouquet of red berry fruit infused with touches of orange peel and apricot. This feels quite exotic. The palate is sorbet-fresh on the entry, with slightly grainy tannin, the oak perhaps impinging a little too much toward the finish. Not bad overall. NEal Martin. |

BH 90 (4/2019): This too is softly toasty with an abundance of earth and underbrush characters suffusing the slightly more elegant red currant-scented nose. The nicely detailed medium weight flavors possess an elegant mouth feel thanks mainly to the relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the attractively complex and lingering finish that reflects only a hint of Pommard-like rusticity. (Drink starting 2024). VM 86 (1/2022): The 2017 Pommard Clos des Pitures 1er Cru feels rather stilted on the nose. (A bit of TCA or just muddled stem addition?) The palate is medium-bodied with loose-knit tannins, quite mature and slightly oxidized. Is this representative? There is a slightly clumsy use of whole bunch here. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (4/2019): Here the wood regimen is less subtle as there are notes of menthol on the airy and equally high-toned nose that is also distinctly floral. The relatively supple medium weight flavors possess both fine precision and minerality, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and built-to-age finish. (Drink starting 2029). VM 92 (1/2019): The 2017 Pommard Les Rugiens 1er Cru has a defined, focused, sprightly bouquet that leaps from the glass: red cherries, rose petal and touches of bergamot - an absolute delight. The lightly spiced palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well-judged acidity and a finely structured finish that lingers. Maybe a little conservative in the scheme of things, but well crafted. (Drink between 2021-2034). Neal Martin. |

BH 91 (4/2019): An elegant, cool and ultra-fresh nose combines a plethora of floral elements with those of high-toned red currant, plum and lavender. The sleek, delicious and stony flavors possess reasonably good mid-palate density as well as fine depth and length. While the dusty finish offers solid balance, it does need to flesh out and thus at least some patience is recommended. (Drink starting 2025). VM 90 (1/2022): The 2017 Pommard Pezerolles 1er Cru has an intensely stemmy nose that occludes the fruit and terroir expression. For some reason, it reminds me stylistically of a Hemel-en-Aarde Pinot more than a Pommard. The medium-bodied palate shows sappy red berry fruit and fine delineation. Nicely proportioned, with a touch of white pepper on the finish. Fine, if just a little cloying. Closure is Diam 5. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2023-2038). BH 92 (1/2020): A restrained and beautifully fresh nose offers up notes of red and dark currant, violet, earth and a hint of wood toast. There is good muscle, punch and power to the middle weight flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the beautifully persistent if youthfully austere and well-detailed finish. This is a blend of power and refinement as the supporting tannins are admirably fine-grained. VM 92 (1/2020): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Murgers 1er Cru offers dark cherry, black tea, sous-bois and traces of truffle on a nose that opens nicely with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit (cranberry and raspberry) and lightly spiced with orange peel and even hints of marmalade toward the firm, quite "serious" finish. Good potential. Neal Martin. WA 92 (1/2020): The 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers is open and demonstrative, bursting with aromas of cherries, red berries and plums mingled with savory notes of grilled game and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and charming, with a generous core of fruit and melting tannins. |

WA 92-94+ (1/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet red berries, coffee roast, raw cocoa, candied peel and cedary new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with an abundance of satiny structuring tannin, juicy acids and a long, pure finish. As usual, this will require some bottle age, but it's one of the high points of the collection. BH 91-94 (4/2019): Like several of the foregoing wines, the wood and menthol-infused nose is quite firmly reduced and basically unreadable today. Otherwise there is exceptionally good richness and volume to the concentrated flavors that brim with dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel as well as buffers the notably firm tannic spine shaping the muscular and youthfully austere finale. This is presently not especially complex but the underlying material appears to be present such that the normal outstanding depth should gradually develop. Drink 2032+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru clearly has the finest bouquet of seven wines that I tasted from the appellation by Jadot. It is very precise and focused, showing superb edginess and impressive terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is quite linear in style, the fruit just a little muted toward the finish, but there is fine structure and detail on this more masculine Clos Saint-Jacques than anticipated.Neal Martin.' |

| VM 89-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots 1er Cru is cut from a more elegant cloth than usual. The bouquet is nicely defined, offering perfumed dark cherry, cranberry and orange blossom aromas. The palate is crisp and well-defined on the entry with a fine bead of acidity, and quite linear and correct – toward the finish, I begin missing the sensuality and voluptuousness that I expect from this Premier Cru. Hopefully it will gain some weight once in bottle. Neal Martin. |

| BH 92-95 (4/2019): Once again an exceptionally fresh and bright nose mixes ultra-pure red berry aromas with those of spice, tea, lilac and rose petal notes. The mouth feel is notably finer than that of the Clos des Chênes as the mid-palate is supple yet the gorgeously textured backend tightens up considerably and displays superb intensity on the very firm and well-balanced finish. It's rare that the Clos du Château des Ducs matches the Clos des Chênes qualitatively but it may well in 2017. Either way, this is terrific. Drink 2032+. Don't miss! |

| BH 89-92 (4/2019): Reduction masks the underlying fruit though does not extend to the palate of the much, much finer if decidedly less powerful flavors that exude evident minerality and underlying tension before culminating in a bitter cherry-infused finish. I like the depth though the dusty finish is somewhat short at present. Note that my predicted range assumes that the length will sort itself out. Drink 2029+. |

| VM 94 (1/2022): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of raspberry, black currant, smoke and tobacco, building nicely with aeration and becoming quite intense after 10–15 minutes. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and good structure, quintessentially Morey in style, displaying ample salinity and a judicious touch of spice. This has great length plus a sense of reserve. Built for the long term. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2024-2050). Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2019): An overtly floral and spice-infused nose reflects notes of various dark berries and earth. Once again there is a highly attractive texture to the medium-bodied flavors that don't yet possess the same complexity though there is even better persistence to the somewhat more structured finale. My sense is that this will add more depth with age and will eventually surpass the Murgers. |

JD 93 (11/2020): The village 2017 Vosne-Romanée comes from four to five different sites and is brought up in 50% new wood. This soft, seductive beauty has loads of spiced red and black raspberries, dried flowers, and honeysuckle-like nuances to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, layered style on the palate. Just about impossible to resist, it's going to evolve for 15 years or more. (Drink between 2020-2036). WA 91 (1/2020): The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village confirms the promise it showed in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, red berries, peonies and sweet soil tones. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, supple and satiny, with succulent acids, melting tannins and a long and perfumed finish. While it's deceptively approachable, long-time followers of this cuvée will know that it will amply reward bottle age with enhanced depth and complexity. VM 90 (8/2025): The 2017 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg is all finesse. The 2017 opens very pretty, floral aromatics. Bright red-toned fruit, cinnamon, blood orange, cedar. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together. Just starting to show the first signs of aromatic development, the 2017 is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. (Drink between 2025-2035). Antonio Galloni. |

BH 93-96 (1/2019): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is by far the largest holder in Clos de la Roche.) A spicy, cool and gorgeously complex nose reflects notes of both red and dark currant, earth and a whiff of leather. There is excellent richness to the concentrated and beautifully textured broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power and a subtle minerality that really comes up on the youthfully austere and strikingly long finish. As good as the Chapelle is, there is just another dimension present here. Drink 2037+. Don't miss! VM 90-92 (1/2019): The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from two climats (2.8 hectares in Clos de la Roche and 0.70 hectares at the bottom of Montluisants) that are each fermented and aged separately. My sample is a blend of the two. It was picked on September 19–20. Like some of Ponsot’s other cuvees, it has a high-toned bouquet of cassis and violets, developing a hint of licorice with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and more tension than the other Grand Crus from the domaine. A sprinkle of white pepper and sage appears toward the finish. This should age well, though I would like more backbone and grip on the finish. Neal Martin. |

VM 88-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvee Allouette is the twin of the Montluisants Blanc from the bottom part of that vineyard. There are plenty of red cherries and cassis scents on the nose, which just needs a little more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and slightly chalky. On the final third of this wine, the terroir belatedly comes through with clarity. Fine. Neal Martin. BH 88-90 (1/2019): (from the 1er portion of Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark.) A cooler and more restrained nose evidences notes of red currant, spice, floral and plenty of earth influence. The supple, round and reasonably precise middle weight flavors exude a hint of minerality that also adds a touch of lift to the dusty if slightly drying finish. There is more density and power but it's not immediately clear if the finish will harmonize. Drink 2025+. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2019): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that those that have died over the years have been replanted.) A cool, elegant and restrained nose flashes an array of various red fruit scents that include cherry, raspberry and a hint of pomegranate, along with soft earth, spice and wood nuances. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious, intense and well-detailed medium weight flavors that deliver fine depth and persistence on the well-balanced finish. Unusually for this wine, it's not as dense as the Griotte though it's perhaps a bit more refined than usual. Drink 2032+. |

| VM 94 (2/2021): The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has a dreamy bouquet that gushes with brambly red berry fruit, redcurrant, cranberry and, to be exact, Tiptree “Little Scarlet” strawberry jam, all beautifully defined. The palate is plush, velvety smooth, very refined with pitch perfect acidity. This Les Cras displays admirable depth, moving into more red Morello cherry and light allspice notes towards the delicate and yet persistent finish. Iron fist/velvety glove and all that... This is a brilliant Chambolle-Musigny from Christophe Roumier and it soared even higher the following day, gaining more nuance and filling out further on the finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 97 (1/2020): (2.55 ha; 100% new wood.) Discreet wood is present on the ultra-fresh and incredibly spicy though even more restrained nose that reflects notes of red berries, the sauvage, earth, floral and exotic tea wisps. The gorgeous mouthfeel of the imposingly constituted and admirably concentrated flavors is one of contrasts as the mid-palate is quite supple yet the powerful, driving, austere and muscular finish is robust, serious and austere. This almost painfully intense wine is jaw droppingly good and somewhat curiously relative to how the Chambertin and the Clos de Bèze typically show at this stage, the Chambertin is the flashier of the two. We'll see in time though as it's usually the Chambertin that goes into a shell only to emerge 20+ years later. Be that as it may, today this is a genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2037+. WA 96-98 (1/2019): The king of the cellar is the 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru, a beautiful wine that offers up aromas of sweet cherries, wild berries, raw cocoa, warm spices and candied peel, complemented by ineffable savory nuances and a classy top note of peony. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and vibrant with juicy acids and a deep core of vibrant fruit that largely cloaks its fine structuring tannins. The Clos de Bèze may be richer and heartier, but the Chambertin is finer, longer and more complete. VM 96-98 (1/2019): The 2017 Chambertin Grand Cru has an extraordinarily detailed and intense bouquet with a cornucopia of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, cranberry and stony aromas, the latter becoming more and more intense with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive body and depth. It is beautifully balanced with svelte tannin, velvety smooth with ample red fruit and spicy finish that lingers for 60 seconds in the mouth. Noble and aristocratic - just as Chambertin ought to be. Neal Martin. |

VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Les Amoureuses, though here there is slightly more red fruit and perhaps a heightened sense of Pinote. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grippy tannin, good backbone (as usual) and a saline influence that becomes more accentuated toward the fresh finish. This feels a little tight-lipped at the moment compared to others tasted from barrel, but it also feels persistent and, for want of a better word, enigmatic. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2019): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) A very ripe yet agreeably fresh nose reflects notes of blue berry, plum liqueur and violet that are cut with spice and earth hints. The exceptionally rich and impressively full-bodied flavors evidence a taut muscularity, all wrapped in an overtly powerful and lingering finish that is naturally sweet. As one would reasonably expect this is quite firm but the 2017 version appears to be a bit less structured than it usually is. Drink 2029+. |

JS 94 (3/2012): A wonderful depth of fruit with very firm and dense tannins. It has so much character of olives, spices, and berries. It's the wine’s freshness and intensity that won me over the 1990 Cos. VM 93 (7/2002): Full medium ruby. High-pitched, perfumed aromas of dark berries, minerals and violet; very cabernet. Rich, dense and youthful; broad and beefy, with cassis, black cherry and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes very sweet and long, with fine tannins spreading out impressively to coat the palate. A great showing. Drink now through 2015. Stephen Tanzer. WA 88 (2/1997): The 1989 Cos d'Estournel is very good, but uninspiring. The 1989, although good, does not live up to expectations given the terroir and the vintage. Its deep ruby color is followed by a spicy vanillin, curranty nose, medium body, excellent depth, but a monolithic personality. It possesses neither the concentration nor dimension of the exceptional 1990. The 1989 possesses some hard tannin in the finish, but it is well-integrated with the wine's ripe fruit. |

| WA 87 (2/1994): Cos d'Estournel's 1991 (about 50% of the harvest was declassified) is one of the wines to buy given its relatively low price and fine quality. It displays a dark ruby color, and a big, rich nose of cassis fruit married intelligently with spicy new oak. Offering surprising fatness and fleshiness, fine length, and a sweet, creamy texture, it should drink well for at least a decade. |

VM 93 (10/2018): The 1996 Cos d’Estournel has a fragrant, Pauillac-tinged bouquet with the melted tar and graphite leitmotifs that I remarked upon in previous encounters. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy-textured tannin. I feel that the 1996 shows a tad more maturity than a few months ago, with undergrowth and peat-like notes surfacing with aeration and then a dash of white pepper streaking across the finish. However, it evinces fine persistency and embraces the classic tropes of the 1996 vintages. Though not a top tier Cos d’Estournel, it remains an excellent Saint-Estèphe. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical at the property. Neal Martin. WA 94 (7/2016): Tasted at the château, the 1996 Cos d'Estournel was aged in 65% new oak (unlike the 1995 which was 100%) and is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. It has a straight down the line, intense and focused, graphite and melted tar bouquet. It is almost Pauillac in style, no surprise given its proximity. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh acidity, finer tannin than the 1986 Cos d'Estournel tasted alongside, but sharing those same leitmotifs of black pepper and sea salt. I like the nonchalance of this Cos d'Estournel. At 20 years it is not an ostentatious wine, not determined to go out and impress, but its nuance, stylishness and classicism grow on you. Its virtues seem to register only after you swallow the wine and find yourself tempted back for more. Excellent. |

JD 95 (10/2023): Drinking at point today, the 2000 Château Cos D'Estournel offers a beautifully complex, mature profile of darker fruits, leafy tobacco, cedarwood, and plenty of earthy, spicy nuances. It’s medium-bodied, elegant, and layered on the palate, with fine, integrated tannins. I love it today, but it will no doubt evolve gracefully over the coming 15-20 years. The blend of the 2000 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. (Drink between 2023-2043) WA 97 (11/2018): Blended of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet in color with a touch of brick and sporting a lot of tertiary evolution on the nose. It leaps from the glass with opulent sandalwood, Chinese five spice, cigar box and leather scents over a core of prunes, baked cherries, dried mulberries and eucalyptus plus a touch of potpourri. Medium-bodied, the palate is laden with fragrant fruitcake and exotic spice layers, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a refreshing line, finishing with an exhilarating menthol lift. |

WA 94 (11/2018): Blended of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2006 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet colored with a touch of brick, opening with enticing scents of rosemary-crusted roast lamb, dried cherries, baked blackcurrants and mincemeat pie with touches of fallen leaves, cigar box and pencil lead. Medium-bodied, lively and elegantly played in the mouth, it has a firm backbone of chewy tannins and plenty of mineral accents on the long finish. VM 91 (10/2018): The 2006 Cos d’Estournel, for my mind, has always been leagues above its rival, Montrose, principally because its rival took a rare misstep in this vintage. It has an attractive ferrous bouquet with undergrowth and hints of Indian spice. The palate is medium-bodied and quite fleshy for Saint-Estèphe, the Merlot in quite expressive. The texture has a satisfying graininess and that spiciness returns towards the rather conservative, steadfast finish. It is a solid Cos d’Estournel, not one from the very top drawer, but it should provide another 15 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel vertical in London. (Drink between 2018-2038). Neal Martin. |

VM 91 (7/2010): Deep, bright red-ruby color. Aromas of plum, redcurrant and kirsch are complicated by sexy woodsmoke, soy sauce and flowers. Silky and rather lush, with a restrained sweetness and considerable finesse to its moderately ripe, sweet middle palate. Finishes with fine-grained tannins and lingering notes of minerals, herbs, dried flowers and smoke. A lovely 2007. WA 90 (4/2010): A beautiful wine with 13.4% natural alcohol, this blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and 3% Cabernet Franc possesses a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of cassis, incense, charcoal, and subtle oak, round, generously endowed flavors, medium to full body, silky tannin, and surprising depth and length. JD 95 (2/2018): The first vintage made at the new winery, the 2008 Cos d’Estournel is drinking beautifully today, with terrific complexity as well as a silky, polished style on the palate. Made from 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc and revealing copious amounts of crème de cassis and black cherry fruit intermixed with notes of toasted bread, spice, and cedar, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a silky, sexy texture, and sweet tannin. Count me in as a fan. This beauty can be drunk today or cellared for another 15-20 years. WA 95 (11/2018): The medium to deep garnet colored 2008 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Pow! The nose explodes with notes of baked cherries, preserved plums, fried herbs, beef drippings and warm cassis with wafts of wood smoke, salami and tobacco leaf. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and earthy/savory in character, sporting beautifully ripe, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing on a lingering mineral note. VM 94 (2/2018): The 2008 Cos dEstournel had one of the most backward, reticent bouquets that I encountered during my tasting. This is so sultry and broody, begrudgingly offering some lovely brambly red fruit mixed with pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, plenty of black fruit laced with allspice, black pepper and sage, leading to a dense and concentrated finish that should see this age for 20 or 30 years. It does not really serve as a forerunner to the blockbuster 2009 because this is cut from a completely different cloth. Neal Martin. JS 94 (6/2016): A very decadent wine on the nose with so much meat, spice and ripe fruit character. Sea shell as well. Full body, tight and structured with silky tannins and a lots of intense fruit. Vibrant wine. Better in 2020 but already fascinating to drink.now through 2019. 20,000 cases made. |

JD 100 (11/2020): Another magical wine from this property, the 2009 Château Cos D'Estournel reminds me slightly of the 2005 with its incredibly rich, powerful, opulent style married to stunning finesse and elegance. Still youthful yet with a touch of maturity, its deep ruby/plum color is followed by classic Saint-Estèphe notes of blackcurrants, dried tobacco, loamy earth, Asian spices, and licorice. Deep, full-bodied, and massive on the palate, it's flawlessly balanced and has building tannins hiding under its wealth of fruit, with no hard edges and a great, great finish. This tour de force is still 5-7 years away from maturity and is a legendary wine to follow over the coming 40-50 years. WA 100 (3/2019): Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Cos d'Estournel features a myriad of wonderfully intense notes, including blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blueberry compote with hints of rose hip tea, sauteed herbs, underbrush, pencil shavings and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. JS 98 (3/2019): A very bold, ripe and complex wine with excellent concentration and a warm, engaging personality (cinnamon and allspice) that's hard to resist. With aeration a hint of dried fruit character emerges. Massive, yet polished finish. It’s been rated 100 in the past. We will see. Drink or hold. |

WA 99 (3/2020): Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Cos d'Estournel unfurls slowly, measuredly, releasing delicate notes of dried mulberries, stewed plums and blackcurrant pastilles before giving way to notions of potpourri, black cherry compote and chocolate box plus touches of dried sage, tobacco and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid foundation of very firm, grainy tannins and very lively acidity supporting the remarkable intensity of tightly wound fruit layers, finishing very long and fragrant. Give it another 4-5 years in bottle and this will be stunning! JS 98 (10/2016): There’s clarity and beauty to this wine as always with pure dark berry, stones and spices. Some clove too. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a long finish. Pure and precise wine with so much class. Try in 2020. VM 97 (4/2020): The 2010 Cos d’Estournel is initially backward on the nose, yet it eventually unfurls to reveal pixelated black fruit, crushed stone, cedar and pine cones, wonderful precision and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins that frame the multi-layered black fruit laced with cedar and black pepper. Great body, superb length and outstanding precision on the finish - what more would you want? Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. Neal Martin. |

JS 95 (1/2014): A dense, refined wine, with blueberries, blackberries and spices. Full body with integrated tannins and a polished texture. Love the mouthfeel to this. Extremely well done for the vintage, considering the hail in St Estephe. Try in 2018. WA 91 (4/2014): The 2011 Cos d’Estournel exhibits a dense ruby/purple color and sweet, toasty, oaky notes intermixed with floral and forest floor characteristics. The complex aromatics suggest this is a top success in 2011. In the mouth, the wine is slightly more compact than one would find in a great vintage, such as 2009 and 2010, but it has impressive richness for the vintage as well as light to moderate tannin and admirable purity. It will benefit from 2-5 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-20 years. Only 30% of the production was utilized for Cos D’Estournel, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. VM 90 (7/2014): Good deep ruby. Spicy aromas of dark plum, red cherry, botanical herbs and graphite. Dense, bright and energetic, with good herbal lift to the precise blackcurrant and dark plum flavors. This fresh, lively wine picks up flesh and depth with aeration. The tactile, chewy finish is pure, long and perfumed. Ian d'Agata. |

WA 93+ (4/2015): The 2012 Cos d’Estournel is a classic expression of St.-Estèphe, with notes of graphite, crushed rock, blackberry, blackcurrant fruit, a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel, structured, but well-integrated tannins and a long finish of 35 seconds or more. This is a beauty and an undeniable top success in the Medoc for 2012. Give it 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it over the following two decades or more. JS 98 (2/2017): If you want to know what St.-Estèphe smells like, this is it. Aromas of spices, black truffles, forest floor, dried strawberries and tar. It’s full-bodied yet pinpointed on the palate with fabulous density and richness. It’s opulent but in a reserved and checked way. This needs at least five or six years to come around, but it’s already fantastic. What harmony and structure. Try in 2022 if you can keep your hands off it! VM 95+ (2/2017): The 2014 Cos d'Estournel is rich, powerful and seductive, with notable unctuousness but a medium-bodied frame. Plum, blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate and lavender notes flesh out in an effortless, sumptuous wine that will provide superb drinking for the next few decades. The 2014 needs time to shed some baby fat, but it is quite impressive, even in the early going. The blend is 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 33 % Merlot and 2 % Cabernet Franc. Antonio Galloni. JD 95 (11/2017): The grand vin 2014 Cos D’Estournel is gorgeous, and I think a step up over the 2015. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, this deep, inky-colored 2014 boasts a gorgeous perfume of ripe currants and cassis fruits, loads of chocolaty oak, cedar and scorched earth, full-bodied richness, and building, firm, yet ripe tannin. It’s certainly one of the gems in the vintage, as well as one of the more structured, opulent and age-worthy. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two to three decades. VM 92-95 (4/2015): The 2014 Cos d'Estournel brings together gorgeous textural richness and ripeness, yet retains considerable aromatic freshness. Mocha, red plum, raspberry jam and rose petals are all beautifully nuanced. I very much like the sense of translucent energy here. Sweet floral and spice notes add to the wine's racy, voluptuous personality. Today, my impression is that the 2014 Cos will reward consumers with a long window of pure drinking pleasure. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. |

JS 98 (2/2018): Super aromas of nutmeg, cloves and dried flowers with plums and blackberries. Subtle yet so complex. Full-bodied, tight and integrated with ultra-fine tannins and a beautiful finish. Lasts for minutes. Very, very Cos. Harmony. Texturally marvellous. Drink in 2024. JA 97 (2/2025): A kick and a squeeze of brambled fruit sets the opening notes, and this captures the exuberance of the vintage, slowed down by a slate scrape expression of the tannins, together with cumin, cigar box, crayon and black pepper spice. Well judged, more luscious than many in this corner of the Médoc in 2015 and it works, delivering concentration and ageability. Scores higher than its 2014, unusually for St Estèphe. Michel Reybier owner, Aymeric de Gironde director. WA 95+ (11/2018): Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23.5% Merlot and 1.5% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cos d'Estournel is muted at this very young stage. The nose offers fleeting glimpses at provocative cherry tart, chocolate mint, baked redcurrants, warm cassis and wild blueberry scents plus suggestions of lilacs, cinnamon stick and Indian spices. Medium to full-bodied, the palate absolutely explodes with vibrant red and black fruit bursts and tons of exotic spice accents, framed by super ripe, super firm tannins and a lovely line of freshness, finishing very long. VM 94 (2/2018): Easily one of the most successful wine in Saint Estèphe in 2015, Cos d'Estournel is just gorgeous. Elements of exoticism appear on the bouquet, followed by generous black cherry, smoke, leather, licorice, menthol and mocha. Naturally, it will be many years before the 2015 is ready to offer a truly complete drinking experience, but it is superb even in the early going. The 2015 was bottled in July 2017. Antonio Galloni. JD 93 (11/2017): The 2015 Cos D'Estournel is a classic wine from this estate and a terrific effort from the northern Medoc. Compared to both 2007 and 2004 by the estate and representing only 39% of the total production, it offers a fresh, classy bouquet of crème de cassis, black raspberries, toasty oak, graphite and damp earth. Made from 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, this medium to full-bodied 2015 has solid mid-palate depth, fine, polished tannin, and a great finish. It’s going to improve with short-term cellaring and keep for two decades. |

VM 100 (1/2019): The 2016 Cos d’Estournel was a bona fide showstopper out of barrel, the best that I had encountered in over 20 years of visiting the estate during en primeur, so my expectations were piled high when I returned to find out how it performs in bottle. Deep, almost opaque in color, it sports a very intense but broody bouquet with fathomless deep black fruit tinged with blueberry and violet. The aromas almost seem to envelop the senses. The palate is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannin that I have never witnessed in any other vintage of Cos d’Estournel. There is a beguiling symmetry to this Saint-Estèphe, as well as unerring mineralite. The persistent, tobacco-tinged finish can be felt 60 second after the wine has departed. This is a monumental, benchmark Cos d’Estournel that will give not years but decades of pleasure, though I suspect it will close down for a period in its youth, hence my drinking window. 13.07% alcohol. Neal Martin. WA 100 (11/2018): The 2016 Cos d'Estournel is blended of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc aged in 65% new and 35% two-year-old French oak for 15 months. Bottled in July 2018, it is deep garnet-purple colored and starts off a little closed and reticent, opening out slowly and seductively to reveal beautiful lilacs, rose hip tea, crushed stones and camphor nuances over a core of crème de cassis, kirsch, wild blueberries and mocha plus wafts of incense and wood smoke. The palate is simply electric, charged with an energy and depth of flavors that seem to defy the elegance and ethereal nature of its medium-bodied weight, featuring super ripe, densely pixelated tannins that firmly frame the myriad of fruit and floral sparks, finishing with epic length. Just. Magic. JD 99 (2/2019): The grand vin 2016 Cos d'Estournel checks in as 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc that saw 70% new French oak. One of the more seamless, pure, elegant versions of this cuvee out there, it boasts a saturated purple color as well as a monster nose of pure crème de cassis, gravelly, rocky minerality, tobacco leaf, crushed violets, and lead pencil shavings. One of those “iron fists in a velvet glove” wines, with full-bodied richness and beautiful structure that’s covered by thrilling levels of fruit and texture, it stays tight, compact, and incredibly focused on the palate. It’s already brilliant given its purity of fruit and balance, but it deserves a decade of bottle age and will keep for 4-5 decades. JS 100 (1/2019): This is muscular yet so well defined and toned. Full-bodied with deep and dense fruit on the palate, yet powerful and rich at the same time. So much sandalwood and blackberry character. Chewy and rich at the finish. This is a warm and generous wine, but the alcohol is just over 13 degrees. Not that high. Love the finish. Extravagant. Magical. Try from 2025. |

WA 98+ (3/2020): Composed of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, yields for the grand vin in 2017 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it was aged in 60% new oak. It came in at an alcohol of 13% and an IPT of 68. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cos d'Estournel needs a little coaxing to unfurl, revealing beautiful expressions of preserved plums, boysenberries, blackcurrant pastilles and wild blueberries with hints of Indian spices, menthol, lilacs and mossy tree bark plus a compelling suggestion of iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a solid backbone of firm, grainy tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the tightly wound blue and black fruits layers, finishing long and fragrant. This wine will need a good 5-7 years in bottle before it begins to blossom and should go on for at least another 40 years. I expect this wine to be a blockbuster of a head-turner when I come back and taste it at 10 years of age! JS 98 (12/2019): Quite the bottle here! Spices, such as nutmeg and cinnamon, as well as dried meat and plums with cedar and sandalwood. Full body. Deep and dense in the center palate and a long, long finish. Shows finesse and tightness. Very polished tannins. Long and ethereal. Try after 2023. VM 95 (3/2020): A bold, dramatic wine, the 2017 Cos d'Estournel is seriously impressive today. Time in barrel has done wonders for the 2017, a wine that has really gained depth in elevage. Black cherry, chocolate, spice, new leather, licorice, smoke and incense infuse the 2017 with tons of character, with the 60% new oak very well judged. In 2017, Cos has a level of textural resonance that eludes many Saint-Estèphes. The blend is 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Antonio Galloni. JD 94 (2/2020): The grand vin 2017 Chateau Cos D'Estournel checks in as 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot brought up in 60% new French oak. It's a classic 2017 that shows the straight, very classic style of the vintage with its medium to full body, ripe, present tannins, and solid spine of acidity. Beautiful cassis, green tobacco, graphite, and cedar pencil notes all emerge from the glass, and as with the Pagodes, it's still tight and reserved on the palate. Reminding me of the 1996 with its classic, balanced style, give bottles 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two decades. |

WA 98+ (3/2021): The 2018 Cos d'Estournel is a blend of 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new oak barriques. The alcohol weighs in at just over 14.5%. Sporting a deep purple-black color, it needs a lot of swirling to begin to unlock a powerful nose of crème de cassis, stewed plums, wild blueberries and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by nuances of Sichuan pepper, star anise, tree and clove oil, plus a waft of charcoal. The full-bodied palate is densely packed with taut, muscular black fruits and earthy layers, framed by super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully earthy. A very impressive behemoth, this is going to need a good seven to 10 years to truly show its stuff and should drink for a good 40 years and beyond. JD 98+ (3/2021): An incredible wine from this estate that's as good as anything in the vintage, the 2018 Château Cos D'Estournel checks in as 74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot that was brought up in 50% new French oak. While some 2018s are going to offer pleasure right out of the gate, this isn't one of them, but rather it's a backward, tannic powerhouse of a wine that has flawless balance as well as a level of purity that's off the charts. Thrilling crème de cassis fruit, notes of lead pencil, damp earth, cedarwood, violets, and acacia flowers, full-bodied richness, masses of ultra-fine tannins, and a great, great finish all make for a legendary Saint-Estèphe that will need a good decade of bottle age yet evolve for 50 years or more. If you are tempted to try a bottle in its youth, it needs lots of air. (Drink between 2031-2081). VM 96 (3/2021): The 2018 Cos d’Estournel showed a lot of promise when I tasted it from barrel. Now in bottle and given a 2–3-hour decant, it has a gorgeous and disarmingly pure bouquet, slightly high-toned with iodine scents infusing the lush blackberry and boysenberry scents. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is fresh and crisp on the entry, delivering silky-smooth tannins, perfect acidity and a sense of harmony than is very persuasive. I cannot recall a Cos d’Estournel in recent years with such fine tannins. It gently fans out toward the finish while retaining superb precision, completing what is a beautifully crafted Cos d’Estournel with a long future ahead. (Drink between 2025-2060). Neal Martin. |

WA 97-99+ (6/2020): Harvest for the grand vin began on the 23rd of September and finished on the 7th of October. Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot (with no Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc this year), yields for this wine in 2019 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it is aging in 55% new oak. It came in at an alcohol level of 14.02% and an IPT of 67. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cos d'Estournel soars out of the glass with vibrant black raspberries, Black Forest cake and crushed blackcurrants scents plus nuances of red roses, wild sage, dark chocolate and cast-iron pan with a waft of woodsmoke. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut, muscular and built like a skyscraper, with firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the concentrated black fruit flavors, finishing with incredible length and depth. This wine so beautifully, clearly captures the juxtaposition between the periods of dry heat and those hallelujah moments of refreshing rain - the hallmarks of this great vintage. It's a vinous masterpiece in the making. JD 97-99 (6/2020): The grand vin 2019 Château Cos D'Estournel is indeed grand and just about instantly transports you to the northern Medoc. Sensational notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil, unsmoked tobacco, new leather, and Asian spices all emerge from this gorgeous wine. Playing in the medium to full-bodied end of the spectrum, it shines for its incredible purity, balance, and elegance, with the vintage’s seamless and sexy style front and center. It's not a blockbuster, but it’s gorgeous in every way. It reminds me of a slightly softer version of the 2016. JS 98-99 (6/2020): A very powerful and structured Cos. It’s full and layered, but not overpowering in terms of fruit. It’s more about the abundant, very fine tannins. It’s a classic wine with historical grip and power. Real Bordeaux. Sophisticated and provocative. |

WA 96-98 (5/2021): The 2020 Cos d'Estournel is composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot. The harvest took place September 10–24 with a yield of 39 hectoliters per hectare. The alcohol weighs in at 13.46% with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT (total phenolic index) of 80. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 55% new. Deep purple-black in color, it pops with explosive scents of ripe red and black currants, black cherry preserves and black raspberries, followed by sparks of violets, wild sage, pencil lead and clove oil, with emerging hints of iron ore and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate has amazing elegance and grace contrasted by jaw-dropping energy, featuring a firm frame of finely grained tannins and just enough freshness, finishing with a whole firework display of mineral nuances. I love the way this Cos d'Estournel shimmies and shines—a unique vintage signature expressed so beautifully at this estate! VM 95-97 (5/2021): The 2020 Cos d’Estournel is a very different proposition to the Les Pagodes, more so than in other years. Much more intense on the nose of intense black fruit, it is beautifully defined, with enticing scents of blackberry, Dorset plum and topnotes of blueberry and briar. After 30 minutes in the glass, it develops more Saint-Estèphe-like traits: freshly tilled soil, cigar box and touches of warm gravel. There is an openness to these inviting aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins (so different from the "iron girders" of yore). There is freshness and a sense of light in this Cos d’Estournel, though the backbone remains in situ on the cedar and mint finish (a nod to neighboring Pauillac, perhaps), then a lingering marine/seaweed note on the aftertaste. This is a finely crafted, very succinct Cos d’Estournel that may well be hiding something up its sleeve for after bottling, and I suspect it will gain more spine during its barrel aging. Neal Martin. JD 95-97+ (5/2021): The Grand Vin 2020 Château Cos D'Estournel is based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot that was brought up in 55% new French oak. An inky-hued, concentrated, yet flawlessly balanced wine, it has gorgeous cassis and dark currant fruits, medium to full-bodied richness, ripe, building tannins, and just a wonderful sense of purity and elegance backed up by ample concentration. It stays tight, focused, and seamless, and is a brilliant example of the vintage. The 2020 hit 13.4% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.9 and an IPT of 80. JS 97-98 (4/2021): This is a very refined, polished Cos with superb finesse and length. Medium-to full-bodied, very fine and persistent. Really long with beautiful tannins. Rich, but fresh and linear. Yet, the alcohol is around 13.5%. 62% cabernet and 38% merlot |

JD 95-97 (4/2024): The Grand Vin 2023 Château Cos D'Estournel checks in as 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and a splash of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, resting in 50% new French oak. This beauty brings everything up a notch, with awesome crème de cassis, graphite, violets, spicy oak, and chocolate-driven aromatics. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it has the fresher yet ripe style of the vintage, beautiful tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a beautifully elegant yet powerful wine in the making from this team. WA 95-96 (4/2024): A contemporary classic in the making, the 2023 Cos d'Estournel has turned out beautifully, reflecting a lighter touch with extraction that has delivered more sensuality and harmony without the loss of any of the estate's signature power and authority. Wafting from the glass with deep aromas of cassis, wild berries, orange zest and exotic spices, framed by well-integrated new wood, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a concentrated core of fruit, beautifully suave tannins and a cool, seamless profile. It's a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that attained 12.9% alcohol and is being matured in 50% new oak. JA 97 (4/2024): Step into Cos d'Estournel, with its richness, depths and layers of cocoa bean, liquorice, espresso, chocolate, exceptional chewiness on the tannins, making things fairly serious at this early stage, with a promise of slow-revealed pleasure over the decades ahead. First time doing green harvest in the vineyards since 2008, causing some worries over the late heat waves on already ripening grapes, but they have retained balanced alchols here, and there is plenty of juice to lift things up on the finish. Harvest September 12 to 29 (last year finished September 22). 50% new oak for ageing, 53% 1st wine. In organic conversion (that began in 2021, but have had to extend after addition of a few more plots to the vineyard). |

JD 94 (3/2023): Showing even better from bottle than barrel, the 2020 Pagodes De Cos checks in as 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34 % Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Remarkably elegant and balanced, it has a great nose of red and black fruits, sandalwood, tobacco leaf, and spice as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. It's shockingly good and up with the top second wines out there. It will evolve for at least two decades. (Drink between 2024-2044). JA 93 (1/2023): Silky, velvety texture, with lovely bright acidities that lift and carry the raspberry and damson fruits. Great stuff, spiced turmeric and saffron notes, black tea and liqourice root. Fine tannins but there are plenty of them, and this will continue to improve over the next few years in bottle. |

JD 91 (4/2024): Mostly Merlot but including 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2021 Pagodes De Cos has a juicy, medium-bodied, lively style that shows the fresher vibe of the vintage while bringing good depth of fruit and texture. Bright black cherries, currants, sappy tobacco, and some graphite/lead pencil notes all define the aromatics, and it has some classic Saint-Estèphe earth and spice. Raised in 25% new barrels and with 12.49% alcohol, drink this balanced, elegant Pagodes over the coming 10-15 years. (Drink between 2024-2039). WA 91 (2/2024): The 2021 Les Pagodes de Cos is a strong effort, offering up aromas of cassis, charcoal, dark berries and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy palate that's quite rich and extracted, concluding with a saline finish. It's a blend of 60% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. JA 90 (4/2022): Visually the texture is attractive, supple, inviting. This is different to the character than you have found in Pagodes over recent years, the acidity is clearly more present through the tannins, which appear at the front of the mouth. But there are plenty of vivid blue fruits, together with bitter chocolate character, this is classically balanced, enjoyable, old school, successful in the vintage and suggests again that St Estèphe is a high spot in 2021, because so few 2nd wines have performed this well. 30% new oak, harvst September 23 to October 7. |
