BH 93-95 (4/2021): A ripe, pure, and airy and elegant nose combines notes of plum, black raspberry and spice with soft earth and floral nuances. The mouthfeel of the medium-bodied flavors is almost gossamer fine yet there is no lack of punch to the strikingly long and again, beautifully balanced finale. This isn't as dense as the Champans or the Clos des Ducs though it does possess that ineffable quality of breed. This is pretty much textbook Taillepieds. (Drink starting 2031).
VM 93-95 (12/2020): The 2019 Volnay Les Taillepieds 1er Cru has a perfumed bouquet with disarmingly pure red cherry, cranberry and rose petal and incense scents. This is one of the domaine’s most alluring aromatics this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, very well balanced with a sensual, deep finish that caresses the mouth. This is a wonderful Volnay that will give 20-30 years of drinking pleasure. This may well end up at the top of my banded score. (Drink between 2024-2050). Neal Martin.

| VM 95 (12/2021): The 2019 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was bottled in June and July ‘21. Very perfumed and floral scents on the nose, dark cherries, bergamot, damp earth and touches of clove, later hints of violet and blood orange (traits that I observed out of barrel). This is nicely detailed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, fine acidity, lightly spiced with a classy espresso-tinged finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Neal Martin. |

| BH 95 (4/2021): (from Chambolle fruit). This too is quite aromatically cool and restrained with its combination of essence of red currant, cherry, lavender, soft spice elements and admirably subtle wood. The juicy and impressively concentrated flavors flash excellent intensity and focused power while displaying the same gorgeous texture as the Echezeaux, all wrapped in a hugely long, serious and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is beautifully refined, indeed while it may seem like an oxymoron given Bonnes Mares’ well-deserved reputation for power and muscle, this is more a wine of finesse. Even so, this should have no trouble aging and improving for close to 20 years. Drink 2036+. |

| BH 91 (4/2021): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Like the Clos de Bèze, here too there is a whiff of volatile acidity though in this case it is decidedly more subtle though still perceptible on the more restrained and more floral cool red currant scents. The equally restrained and transparent large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a youthfully austere and markedly firm finale. I would make the same observation here as I did with the Bèze, which is to say it’s impossible to predict how VA will affect any given person’s perception of a wine but in this case, I was less bothered by it than with the Clos de Bèze. Drink 2036+. |

| BH 90 (4/2021): (from a parcel purchased in 2007 and replanted; 2018 was the first vintage where this has been declared under its own name as it was previously blended). A cool, pure if very restrained nose features a pretty mix of red and dark currant and earth nuances that are trimmed in just enough menthol and wood toast to mention. There is again very fine volume to the sappy, rich and powerful medium-bodied flavors that, much like the Fremiets, remain relatively refined before culminating in a dusty, saline and beautifully persistent finish. This is lovely and it’s not so structured that it couldn’t be approached after only 5 or so years. Drink 2027+. |

Here the pure and ripe nose offers yet another level of spiciness that includes clove, anise and sandalwood that adds breadth of the aromas of black raspberry, violet, rose petal and tea. The super-sleek, intense and mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation while delivering outstanding length on the classy, focused and balanced finale. At least 6 to 8 years of cellaring is recommended. Drink 2031+. |

JM 93 (9/2023): A powerful dark colour on the more sombre side. This is a stern and muscular Beaune Grèves with dark fruit, some blacker notes which this vineyard can manage. Long and powerful with the black cherries taking charge. I do not find this over-extracted, just a baby waiting to develop, with some minerality offering further encouragement for a good long term outcome.
VM 89 (12/2023): The 2019 Beaune Les Grèves Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus 1er Cru has a much more understated bouquet—low-key and more tertiary in style, with finely-delineated dark cherries and hints of bergamot tea mixed with bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins. Quite a polished Beaune Grèves, there is a sumptuousness to this wine with a lightly spiced finish, though it doesn't quite have the complexity or mineralité of its peers. I've had better bottles. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2024-2036). Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (12/2023): The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet. The oak is better integrated than Gouges's Les Saint-Georges, hence there is superior delineation and more typicité and brightness. The palate is velvety smooth with fine acidity. There is a veneer of new oak (François Frères?) that needs to be assimilated, though it has panache, and there is admirable persistence on the finish. Again, like many of its peers in the northerly part of the appellation, there is an opulence that might be off-putting for those seeking "classic Burgundy,” but it is undeniably well balanced and seductive. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2027-2048). Neal Martin.
BH 94 (1/2022): A brooding and reticent nose possesses moderately deeply pitched aromas of plum and red and black cherry liqueur laced with plenty of spice, earth and humus influences. The broad-shouldered, powerful and overtly muscular flavors coat the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the very firm tannic spine shaping the hugely long and remarkably complex finale. As is usually the case, this is no model of refinement, but it is a genuine 'wow' wine, provided you have the wherewithal to cellar it for the 20+ years it's going to need. Even if you don't, it's still a most impressive force of nature! (Drink starting 2036).
WA 93-95 (1/2021): The 2019 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains opens in the glass with notes of plums, dark berry fruit and cassis mingled with aromas of espresso roast, dark chocolate, rich soil tones and orange rind. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's built around chalky tannins and lively acids. As usual, this is the most overtly built for the long haul of all Chevillon's wines, and it will require the most patience. |

VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru, which I never tasted from barrel, has a sublime bouquet that is the paragon of Pinot's transparency. Perfumed with joyous red fruit, crushed stone and a touch of wilted rose petal, the aromatics whisk you to the famed walled vineyard. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly chalky tannins and a surfeit of energy and tension. It’s quite linear and strict toward the finish that just loses its initial crystalline quality. But still, this is a very great wine from Jean-Marie Fourrier. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin.
JM 98 (9/2023): Solid, rich dark crimson. Dark berry fruit, again evidently quite ripe yet showing a sense of balance. This style of bouquet I find enormously pleasing. Layers of flavour on the palate, a vibrant minerality, nuanced all the way through, no excessive alcohol, though the fruit is certainly ripe, and a velvet touch to the finish that is matched by a fresher feel. Brilliant wine! |

The finer and more mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess equally good verve along with fine depth and persistence on the pit fruit-inflected finish. This is lovely and notably less Gevrey in character; indeed its proximity to Morey is evident. |

BH 89-92 (1/2021): Firm reduction blocks an evaluation of the nose today though the underlying fruit does seem ripe. There is excellent vibrancy to the subtly mineral-driven larger-scaled flavors that possess better depth and persistence on the muscular, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is very Nuits in character without being overly rustic. Drink 2031+. |

VM 92-94 (12/2020): The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Pruliers 1er Cru was a little more reduced than Gouges’s other cuvées, opening gradually to reveal blackberry, wild hedgerow and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, lithe and silky in the mouth, and fleshy with a judicious touch of white pepper toward the finish. The shortfall in grip and substance is sufficiently compensated with elegance. Neal Martin.
JM 90-94 (11/2020): Very reductive. Dense, almost sombre purple. A little toastiness too. Will rack end November to bottle Feb/March, and it needs the racking. Sweetly ripe, very dense, dark cherry here, not too cooked but it is quite a monster on the dark side. Just give it twenty years… Just a little fresher at the finish.
BH 90-92 (1/2021): This is also quite firmly reduced and unreadable at present. Otherwise there is equally good energy and delineation to the slightly more refined though still dense and muscular medium-bodied flavors that possess just a bit more depth on the similar finish that is muscular, serious and youthfully austere if not especially rustic. Drink 2031+. |

This has a very well-defined, quite floral nose with violet-infused red and blue fruit, fine delineation and poise. This is understated compared to previous vintages that I have tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, quite citric and edgy with blood orange and a touch of black pepper towards the persistent finish. This gains weight with aeration that emphasizes more its blue fruit character. Very long in terms of aftertaste, this should age with style. (Drink between 2024-2048). Neal Martin. |

Perfumed and utterly seductive, it emanates multi-layered black and red fruit, forest floor, hints of black truffle shavings and crushed stone. Gentle but insistently grippy and suffused with mineralité, this fans out wonderfully on the extremely persistent finish. | VM 96 (12/2023): The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru has a magnificent nose. Perfumed and utterly seductive, it emanates multi-layered black and red fruit, forest floor, hints of black truffle shavings and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with pure black fruit that disguises the serious structure behind this wine. Gentle but insistently grippy and suffused with mineralité, this fans out wonderfully on the extremely persistent finish. It has a complex bouquet that defies its Village Cru status thanks to the venerability of the low-yielding vines, mineral-infused black fruit, a touch of graphite and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with good concentration. Quite structured black fruit laced with graphite towards the finish. Excellent - but serious! Neal Martin.
JM 88-91 (11/2020): 15 barrels made from old vines (65+ years on average) with 30% whole bunch vinification and 20% new wood. Darker centre, with the customary light reduction. Then a dark raspberry fruit with lighter strawberry notes round the edges, a few more tannins here, good length again. A touch of spice to finish. |

Blackberry commingles with raspberry, briar and neatly-integrated oak, and there is clever use of whole bunch here. The palate is sweet and ripe on the entry, fleshy in texture and very pure in terms of its red fruit profile, with a little more depth and body on the finish than some others. This represents a delightful Gevrey Premier Cru. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2025-2044). Neal Martin.

| BH 95-98 (1/2021): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay.) This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. Drink 2041+. Don't miss! |
