VM 94 (1/2024): The 2022 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a pixelated bouquet with that mélange of red and black fruit that I noticed before. It's perfumed with hints of potpourri and lovely sous-bois/mossy scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied, with a little crunch on the entry. It's a more structured Champans than I am accustomed to; perhaps the tannins are a bit firmer and less silky in texture at the moment. This will need more time to knit together than d'Angerville's other cuvées. (Drink between 2028-2048). Neal Martin.

BH 92-94 (4/2024): Background hints of wood can be found on the ripe and nicely fresh aromas of poached plum, black cherry and violet. The round, velvety and rich medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before culminating in a youthfully austere, serious, compact and sneaky long finale. This potentially outstanding effort could use better depth so at least some patience should prove beneficial and 12 to 15 years would be better still. (Drink starting 2034).
VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru was tasted from individual cuvées blended to make a representative final blend. This year, there is 8% vin de presse. It has a backward nose at first, demanding encouragement from the glass. There’s blackberry, raspberry and sea spray, and quite an elevated marine influence compared to recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Silky smooth in texture with fine delineation, very well-balanced with a touch of white pepper and clove on the finish. This is set to be a generous Clos des Epeneaux, slightly more opulent in style yet with ample freshness and tension. It will require 4-5 years in bottle. (Drink between 2027-2050). Neal Martin. |

BH 87 (4/2024): (from vineyards in Santenay, Marsannay and the lower portions of Volnay.) An unusually elegant nose for the genre features perfumed aromas of plum, violet and cool cherry. There is both a lovely texture and energy to the delicious middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Serve it cool though and you won't notice. Drink 2025+. Outstanding!
VM 88-90 (1/2024): The 2022 Bourgogne is bursting with red purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and lavender. This mid-weight, fruity Bourgogne is an absolute delight. Enjoy it over the next few years. It’s a great introduction to this range. Neal Martin. |

The super-sleek and even finer yet more powerful larger-bodied flavors display impressive power on the even more complex, balanced and highly persistent finale. This is a big wine yet the balance is such that it could be approached after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2034+.
VM 93-95+ (1/2024): The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is an imposing young wine. A blast of blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, crushed rock and menthol saturates the palate. This bruiser is going to need time to be at its best, but it is pretty impressive, even in the early going. Neal Martin. |

VM 91-93 (1/2024): The 2022 Volnay, all from 1er Cru Clos de lo Rougeotte, is a serious wine. Dark, rich and sensual, the 2022 is terrific. Silky, plush contours wrap around the finish. This supple, inviting Volnay is a huge overachiever. Then again, it is a 1er Cru in all but name. Neal Martin. |

A range of fruits finishing with some black cherry after the dark red berries, a heightened intensity of fruit, with an excellent balance between tannin and acidity, and notable length. Not racked but has retained purity.
BH 91-94 (4/2024): A slightly riper but brooding nose only grudgingly reveals it aromas of dark berries, earth and a whiff of leather. The noticeably denser medium-bodied flavors are at once caressing but powerful with both mouthcoating sap and tannins on the robust, serious and built-to-age finish. This excellent effort also always needs time in bottle and 2022 will again be no different. (Drink starting 2034). |

BH 91-93 (1/2024): Moderate wood influence can be found on the exuberantly spicy and smoky nose of mostly dark currant and violet scents. There is good energy to the delicious if not especially dense middleweight flavors that conclude in a firm finale that exudes focused power as well as a touch of warmth. (Drink starting 2032).
VM 91-93 (1/2024): The 2022 Echézeaux Les Loachausses Grand Cru (not the easiest lieu-dit to pronounce but is actually a monopole of the Gros family) is the most taciturn on the nose amongst Anne Gros' cuvées. There is a touch of crushed stone that develops in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a lot of sucrosity on the entry. It has fine depth and is quite linear, and maybe it needs to muster a little more complexity and terroir expression on the finish. I'm sure it will. (Drink between 2027-2042). Neal Martin. |

VM 93-95 (1/2024): The 2022 Echézeaux Les Loächausses Grand Cru is the maiden release from a 0.38-hectare strip that hitherto was part of the cuvée produced by Gros Frère & Soeur and is matured in 100% new oak. [Readers should note that Paul Gros, son of Anne, is farming the same lieu-dit to be released under his own name.] It has a tightly wound nose at first. Then it opens with ebullient red berry fruit, Japanese yuzu, a smear of Seville orange marmalade, and sous-bois aromas. The palate is smooth and harmonious, quite plush in style - lots of rondeur here. It’s quite toasty toward the finish due to the oak, but it feels long and sumptuous. Afford this several years to soak up the wood. (Drink between 2030-2058). Neal Martin.
BH 92-94 (1/2024): A touch of wood toast sets off the pretty and very fresh red and dark currant and poached plum aromas that display top notes of Asian-style tea and lovely spice nuances. The cool and restrained middleweight flavors exude a distinct minerality on the linear, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish where the wood reappears. This is a bit oaky today but it appears to have the necessary density to integrate it in time. (Drink starting 2034) |

VM 94-96 (1/2024): The 2022 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is the maiden vintage under the Anne Gros label, the parcel having previously been vinified by Bernard Gros (Gros Frère & Soeur) under a fermage. It has a very well-defined bouquet, dark berry fruit intermixed with crushed limestone and wilted rose petals, understated at first and only gradually gaining intensity. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, tensile from the start, with a keen thread of acidity. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish with a saline aftertaste. Precision is the keyword here rather than power. Superb. (Drink between 2028-2052). Neal Martin.
BH 91-94 (1/2024): This is also aromatically attractively airy, pretty and cool with its array of red cherry, raspberry, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. I very much like the seductive texture of the solidly powerful medium weight flavors that display better power and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finale. This could use better depth but more should reasonably develop over time. (Drink starting 2034). |

VM 94-96 (1/2024): The 2022 Richebourg Grand Cru is another new cuvée added to the Domaine's portfolio due to the end of Colette Gros's lease agreement. This parcel is located in the lieu-dit of Les Vérroilles, where there was originally a wall, parts of which remain. This 0.41-hectares is sandwiched between rows owned by A.F. Gros and Gros Frère & Soeur. Aged entirely in new oak, the refined bouquet gradually builds in the glass: mainly dark berry fruit, forest floor, hints of morels and light graphite aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. This is a more elegant take on Richebourg. It is harmonious with a satin texture, a peacock's tail towards the finish, and a dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. This marks a very impressive debut. (Drink between 2030-2060). Neal Martin.
BH 92-95 (1/2024): Here too there is a touch of wood toast lurking in the background of the wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven bigger-bodied flavors possess innate power that carries over to the driving and exceptionally firm finale that is compact, serious and very much built-to-age. I think it gives another layer of complexity: black plum, violet, briar and just a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins and gentle grip, gaining body and depth towards a harmonious and minerally finish. Excellent. JM 93-95 (10/2023): Much the deepest and densest purple of the three Lafon Volnay 1ers Crus, with intensity on the nose to match. Darker berries, may quite restrained, such is the intensity. This is a huge wine on the palate, with good acidity, still needs a lot more elevage. The quality of the fruit comes out in the excellent finish with very well integrated tannins. This matches the sublime 2019 Santenots.
BH 92-95 (4/2024): Slightly riper and markedly spicier aromas of poached plum, dark currant and a suggestion of earth enjoy a variety of floral influences and in particular violet. There is excellent volume and better mid-palate density to the focused and powerful larger-bodied flavors that conclude in a compact, serious and bult-to-age finale. This is impressive and wine that should age gracefully over the next 20 years. Strongly worth considering. Drink 2034+. |

JM 94-96 (12/2023): Dark purple. A bundle of bright fruit on the nose, dark raspberry, and a little vanilla. The fruit is fully ripe, even with some sucrosity, a touch of black cherry, but still in harmony at 13.9% The fruit is far more in evidence than the structure which it seems to cover. Quite a long finish though.
VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from a blend of three parcels vinified separately, matured in 80% new oak, and blended before bottling. The well-defined bouquet is initially understated, with red and black fruit mixed with subtle marine scents, oyster shells and sea cave. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth texture. It has good concentration and is quite elegant, with gentle grip and much more complexity than the 2021 last year. It feels long and tender. Give it four or five years in bottle, and you will have a fine Clos Vougeot. (Drink between 2027-2049).
BH 91-94 (1/2024): An unusually spicy nose for young Clos de Vougeot is comprised by pretty red and dark berries along with hints of earth and wood. The delicious and beautifully textured middleweight flavors are not particularly dense though this still display good power and drive on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and fashioned in an understated style. (Drink starting 2034). |

VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" comes from the north of the appellation and includes one-third of whole bunches due to the acidity being lower than the Marsannay. It has a beautiful bouquet like last year, pure with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, superb mineralité and vigor. The palate is medium-bodied with dark berry fruit, Earl Grey and light tertiary scents, very cohesive with a persistent finish. This should age extremely well in bottle. (Drink between 2026-2043). WA 90-91 (1/2024): The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs wafts from the glass with aromas of red plums, cherries, cassis and sweet spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy but youthfully structured palate that's framed by sweet, powdery tannins.
BH 89-91 (1/2024): There is a plethora of floral elements to be found on the fresh and distinctly cool nose of the essence of red berries and forest floor. There is better volume and density to the medium weight flavors that also exude evident minerality on the firm, and firmly austere, finale. This is very good for its level but not a wine that is likely to make for attractive early drinking. (Drink starting 2030) |

A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable.
BH 94 (1/2024): An even spicier and more floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by blue pinot fruit and discreet earth wisps. The succulent, refined and vibrant medium-bodied flavors aren't especially concentrated though they do possess impressive power on the beautifully long and equally well-balanced finale. This is a wine that is certainly built to repay extended keeping but it's not so compact that it couldn't be reasonably approached after only 5 to 7 years. |

JM 95-98 (11/2023): Planned to pull out 30% of the holding, but in the end 40% made more sense. So there is just 60% left of old virused vines. Hence only 3.5 barrels. Bright mid purple. The bouquet has a delicious, lifted, velvety red fruit. Floral and seductive, entirely red fruit, nothing black, so not too ripe, and with abundant energy. Fresh and even slightly peppery at the finish.
BH 94-97 (1/2024): An exuberantly classy nose features a plethora of floral elements on the elegant, airy and layered combination of red and dark cherry, exotic tea and a hint of wood. The super-sleek and more refined medium weight flavors possess a lilting, even borderline delicate, mouthfeel yet no lack of punch and minerality on the superbly long finish. This is brilliant and may be the best de Vogüé Amoureuses in some time. Wow. Drink 2034+. |

JM 95-100 (11/2023): As mentioned in the introduction, there are seven separate parcellaire cuvées of Musigny which will be blended. We tried four of them, representing different sectors. Les Petits Musigny (north): An even purple, succulent red fruit. Fresh raspberry and strawberry, touch of liquorice, very even, fair acidity, soft tannins. Les 13 ouvrees: Stonier than north Musigny. A touch darker in colour and definitely a richer bouquet, more headily floral. More clearly the weight of Musigny, but also shows as quite a bit riper. Grand Musigny Haut: A glowing mid purple. A lovely tensile strength, not so evidently ripe, but correctly so, red to dark red in fruit. Good acidity, and fairly complete. Grand Musigny Bas: Glowing purple perhaps fractionally deeper than the upper part. The nose is less extrovert but clearly has superb class and a poised density. The sense of completeness of GM Haut but noticeably more intense through the mid palate. The fruit is a fraction riper, perfectly so, with a few suggestions of dark raspberry in the fruit. Very persistent indeed and a freshness to the finish, enough to make a major wine. I don’t feel it correct to award five stars until I have seen the full blended wine, preferably in bottle, but I certainly don’t rule that out.
BH 94-97 (1/2024): This is aromatically quite similar to the 1er except that it is notably more restrained and requires considerable swirling to coax the nose to reveal its nuances. On the palate though there is noticeably more size, weight and mid-palate density thanks to the abundant sap that imparts a highly seductive mouthfeel while also buffering the firmer, though just as fine, tannic structure shaping the hugely long, youthfully austere and decidedly powerful finish that is akin to rolling tiny rocks around the mouth. This is also positively brilliant with the development potential to match. Drink 2037+. |
