WA 93 (1/2022): The 2019 Cote Rotie La Vialliere starts off deceptively silky and fine, with charming scents of cherries and herbs and a pleasant, medium-bodied mouthfeel, then turns a bit drying and tannic on the finish. Despite its charm, it deserves some time in the cellar and should drink well through 2040.
VM 96 (12/2022): Deep violet color. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe, mineral-accented black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and smoky bacon. Offers deeply concentrated yet lively dark berry, kirsch, star anise and candied violet flavors that show excellent clarity and back-end thrust. WA 95+ (1/2022): The intense, tannic 2019 Cote Rotie les Grandes Places—from vines planted in 1935, 1960 and 1984—needs lots of time to come into a more pleasurable state of drinkability. It's full-bodied, concentrated, dense and tannic, but it shows promising notes of grilled plums and salted licorice on a long, long finish. It's a terrific effort, but one that will require serious patience.
VM 96 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. A highly perfumed bouquet evokes ripe dark fruits, baking spices, smoked meat and potpourri, accompanied by building olive and licorice notes. Sappy, sharply delineated blackberry, bitter cherry, licorice and espresso flavors turn sweeter with air and pick up a smoky mineral quality that adds support and back-end cut. JD 96+ (11/2021): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape is the usual blend of roughly 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties that was brought up in foudre. It offers a vivid ruby/purple hue as well as stunning aromatics of blueberries, violets, peppered beef, leather, and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and elegant, it has just a kiss of classic Beaucastel wild, sauvage nuances, ripe, silky tannins, and a great finish. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following two decades.
VM 95 (10/2021): Saturated violet color. Powerful, mineral-accented cherry, blackberry, licorice and -garrigue- scents, along with a hint of candied flowers. Deep, penetrating and alluringly sweet, offering cherry liqueur, dark berry, lavender, exotic spice and cola flavors that are given spine by a core of juicy acidity. JD 96 (11/2021): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape from Laurent is the usual blend of 82% Grenache and the rest nearly equal parts Syrah, Mourvèdre, Vaccarèse, and Counoise that was brought up all in concrete tank. It shows the sunny, spicy, Provençal style of the vintage beautifully while still having incredible freshness in its red and black fruits as well as garrigue, ground pepper, spring flowers, and incense aromas and flavors. Gorgeous on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied Châteauneuf du Pape is balanced and has terrific tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Rhône lovers need to have this beauty in their cellar, and it's going to offer pleasure for a solid two decades.
VM 94 (6/2023): The 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a success. A Grenache-led blend with some Mourvèdre, Syrah, Vaccarèse and Counoise, this 2019 aged for 21 months in concrete tanks. It bursts from the glass with a fragrant perfume of rose petal, blood orange, ripe forest strawberry, raspberry compote, dried herbs and hints of mint. Firm tannins structure the full-bodied palate, kept in check by fresh acidity. Laurent Charvin crafted a splendid wine, which demands a few more years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften. | JD 97-99 (2/2022): A potential candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2019 Hermitage is a massive, full-bodied, yet mineral-laced and undeniably classic wine from this estate. All of the components showed incredibly well, with the Le Méal offering classic sexiness, the Hermite being straight and focused, and the Bessards just as good as any Syrah out there. It shows the ripeness of the vintage, yet the purity of fruit is incredible. It’s another magical wine in an incredible series of awesome Hermitage from this family. |

JD 95 (12/2022): The 2019s, now from bottle, are pure gold at this estate, and this is clearly a great vintage for this incredible family. Beautifully perfumed with red, black, and blue fruits as well as iron and leather, the 2019 Cornas Renaissance hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a ripe, rounded mouthfeel, and a sunny, opulent character that already offers pleasure. This will nevertheless benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and, I suspect, have 15 years of longevity.
VM 94 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of dark berry liqueur, succulent flowers, olive paste and baking spices show very good clarity and mineral lift. Juicy blackberry, kirsch, chewing tobacco and floral pastille flavors display sharp definition and take on a smoky aspect with air. JD 99 (8/2022): My favorite release from this estate is consistently their Les Bessards Hermitage, and their 2019 is no exception. Coming from the western part and pure broken granite soils on the west side of this magical hill, it sports a dense purple hue to go with a brilliant perfume of cassis, graphite, scorched earth, burning embers, spring flowers, and peppery herbs. Incredibly complex, layered, and nuanced, with classic Hermitage characteristics, it still stays firmly planted in the ripe, sunny, sexy vintage. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured on the palate, it has a wealth of tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic that needs to be forgotten for 4-5 years and will evolve for 20-30 years in cold cellars. Hats off to the team at Delas for another incredible wine.
VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby-red. A highly perfumed and expansive bouquet evokes dark berry and cherry preserves, Indian spices, olive and incense; a smoky mineral nuance emerges as the wine opens up. Fleshy and broad on the palate but surprisingly energetic as well, offering intense, mineral-driven black raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, allspice and licorice flavors, with a suave touch of candied flowers. WA 93 (1/2022): A four-barrel selection from Gérard's primary lieu-dit, the 2019 Cote Rotie Le Mollard includes 7% Viognier. One-fourth was vinified as whole clusters, while the élevage was in a mix of new (25%) and second use (75%) barriques. Marked by a hint of vanilla and subtle spice shadings on the nose, the wine delivers ripe cherry scents as well. It's medium to full-bodied, a bit richer and deeper than the blended Cote Rotie, yet also silky and quite long on the finish. |

WA 90 (1/2022): From what Gérard calls the coldest climat in the appellation, his 2019 Saint Joseph Le Blanchard—from less than a hectare of vines planted on a northeast-facing slope of red granite above Chavanay—offers copious amounts of black cherries and raspberries on the nose. Aged a year in 25% new barriques, it's medium to full-bodied yet almost delicate in feel and not oaky at all, with silky tannins and decent length on the finish. |

JD 94 (1/2022): The 2019 Gigondas Cuvée Florence is more concentrated and layered, and this is one of the finest vintages of this cuvée I can remember. Blackberries, sandalwood, cedary garrigue, and hints of tobacco give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet concentrated 2019 that offers silky tannins and a great finish. Give bottles a handful of years in the cellar and enjoy over the following two decades.
VM 94 (1/2023): Deep ruby. Heady dark berry, cherry-cola, vanilla and floral aromas are complicated by hints of white pepper, incense and espresso. Powerful, smoke-laced blackberry compote, kirsch, mocha and fruitcake flavors show impressive depth and gain sweetness with air. JD 98-100 (12/2022): As always, the 2019 Côte Rôtie La Landonne is all Syrah that was not destemmed and will spend four years in new French oak. A wine with perfection written all over it, it's one of the most impressive barrel samples to ever pass this critic's lips. Deep purple/black-hued with a massive, full-bodied, brooding style, it has classic smoky, meaty black fruits, a touch of iron, graphite, tobacco, and pepper, building tannins, and a huge finish. This is pure brilliance in Syrah, yet as with just about every vintage here, it will require a solid decade of bottle age.
WA 98-100 (2/2022): The impenetrably dark 2019 Cote Rotie La Landonne represents the essence of this fabled lieu-dit, combining peppery, herbal notions with espresso and roasted meat, all carried by ample plum and black cherry fruit. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and long on the finish—simply a superb wine that should be flirting with perfection when it is released in a couple of years.
VM 96-98 (5/2020): Powerful, spice- and mineral-accented black/blue fruit liqueur, exotic spice, olive and incense aromas show superb clarity and pick up hints of smoky bacon, mocha and candied licorice with aeration. Sweet, seamless and penetrating in the mouth, offering densely packed boysenberry, cherry liqueur, fruitcake and vanilla flavors and a touch of salty olive paste. WA 98-100 (2/2022): The extroverted 2019 Cote Rotie La Turque is about as impressive a young wine as I've tasted at Guigal, with extravagant, blossom-like aromas and oodles of cassis and blueberries. Full-bodied, it's simultaneously concentrated and rich yet airy and almost weightless, an outrageous juxtaposition of characters that must be tasted to be understood.
JD 97-99 (2/2022): The 2019 Côte Rôtie La Turque comes from a small parcel in the Côte Brune lieu-dit and includes a splash of Viognier. By all appearances, it’s another incredible vintage for this cuvée, offering ample ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruit as well as pepper, smoked game, and flower. Full-bodied, it has more mid-palate density than the La Mouline, ripe tannins, and a great finish.
VM 95-97 (5/2022): Bright and energetic on the intensely fragrant nose, displaying ripe black/blue fruit, vanilla and floral scents that pick up olive and exotic spice notes as the wine stretches out. In a powerful, fruit-driven style, offering appealingly sweet cherry, blackberry, mocha and allspice flavors, plus suggestions of licorice and cola. WA 93-96 (5/2021): The full-bodied, impressively inky 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert features blackberries and cassis, mulberries and blueberries, yet notes of violets, black olives and espresso keep it from being a one-dimensional fruit bomb. Rich, concentrated and dense, it's almost Port-like on the palate. I could see some people thinking it could be too much of a good thing, but maybe this wine just needs more elevage and additional time in the cellar compared to other recent vintages. It is a bit chunky and unformed at this point, but it finishes rich and dusty, with hints of mocha and no real signs of its 15% alcohol.
JD 92-94 (11/2020): The 2019 Crozes-Hermitage Domaine De Thalabert showed well, with a floral, pepper, and sappy herb style as well as plenty of darker cherry and currant fruit. With medium to full body, a vibrant, elegant texture, present tannins, and good acidity, this is a classic, balanced Thalabert to hide for 2-4 years and enjoy over the following decade or more. |

WA 98-100 (5/2021): Might this be the next vintage of La Chapelle to crack triple digits? Knockout aromas of crushed stone, violets, blueberries, and cassis mark the nose of the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle, while the full-bodied palate is undeniably more intense and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Rich and velvety, it coats the mouth with dark fruit and creamy-textured espresso, yet retains remarkable length and licorice-derived peppery freshness on the finish. Wow!
JD 98-98+ (11/2020): Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it's not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making. |

Made up of approximately 80% Grenache, with 6% Syrah, 4% Mourvèdre and smaller amounts of other permitted varieties, it's impressively complex on the nose, with scents of black cherries, blackberries and black olives, plus mysterious wafts of violets and garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it finishes long and velvety, a sure-fire bet for cellaring. |

JD 98+ (2/2022): More black raspberry, camphor, graphite, peppered meat, and powdered rock notes emerge from the 2019 Côte Rôtie Le Vialliere, another flat-out incredible wine from this family. Much straighter and more focused than the more opulent La Landonne, it has a dense mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, full-bodied richness, and perfect balance. It’s singular, heavenly wine that needs to be forgotten for 5-7 years, and it should see its 30th birthday in fine form.
VM 97 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby color. Smoke- and mineral-accented cherry and blackberry scents show superb clarity, and licorice and olive nuances build in the glass. Gently sweet, penetrating dark berry, bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors are underscored by a smoky mineral element and pick up an exotic spice nuance with air. Fleshes out slowly on the fabulously long well-delineated finish, which is framed by solid (but in no way severe) tannins that blend very slowly into the wine's deep, dark fruit. JD 97-100 (10/2020): Even deeper colored, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Deus-Ex Machina reveals a saturated purple hue as well as a blockbuster, more masculine bouquet of smoked blackcurrants, chocolate, ground pepper, bouquet garni, and assorted cured meat-like nuances. Based on a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre, with the Grenache brought up in tank and the Mourvèdre brought up in demi-muid, this beauty is full-bodied, packs serious power, has an awesome mid-palate, and one monster of a finish. A solid 4-5 years of bottle age are warranted, but it’s going to keep for 20-25 years or more.
WA 95-97 (10/2020): Much like the La Combe des Fous, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina seems denser and more concentrated and powerful than the more elegant 2018. Purple fruit and dark chocolate retain a remarkable degree of freshness in this full-bodied, velvety-textured and arguably over-exuberant puppy. There's tremendous material here, compressed into a potent ball of vinous energy that I expect will develop some more nuance and elegance over time. |

JD 97-99 (10/2020): Always the most elegant cuvee in the lineup from this team, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Combe Des Fous checks in as a normal blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and the rest Vacqueyras and Cinsault. It just screams Provence on the nose, with loads of blackcurrants, lavender, white chocolate, ground pepper, and assorted Asian spice-like aromas and flavors all jumping from the glass. With full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional, layered mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish, this is another beautiful, seamless, elegant yet also incredibly powerful wine from this estate that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and keep for 15-20 years or more.
WA 94-96 (10/2020): Plummy and chocolaty yet remarkably vibrant, the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous comes across as richer and more powerful than the 2018. I'm not sure that's a good thing in this cuvee, as it's full-bodied, dense and a bit chunky at the moment—certainly enormously impressive, but without the elegance of the previous vintage. It will be interesting to see how it compares once it's in the bottle. |

JD 97-100 (10/2020): The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum is going to be one of the wines of the vintage. All Grenache sourced from a single parcel in the La Crau lieu-dit and raised all in demi-muids, it sports a more ruby/purple hue that’s not completely opaque and has an incredible bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ripe blackcurrants, scorched earth. graphite, ground pepper, and assorted cured meats. With an incredibly singular character, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and carries incredible power and richness, yet it nevertheless still glides over the palate with no sensation of weight or heaviness, ultra-fine tannins, and a remarkable sense of purity and elegance. This is another magical Grenache from this team. It’s going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and knock your socks off over the following 20 years or more.
WA 96-98 (10/2020): The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Sanctus Sanctorum—a 100% Grenache cuvee (from vines planted in 1905) matured in new demi-muids—looks to have the concentrated fruit to handle the oak better than the 2018. Dark and intense, it delivers waves of purple berries and black cherries, barely touched by vanilla and cedar. It's full-bodied and rich, and although the wood tannins do leave an impression, it's a gentle one relative to the wine's overall profile. While it may not quite equal the near-perfect 2016, it's close. |

| JD 100 (11/2021): Lastly, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is another magical wine, and I might have rated this cuvee a perfect score more than any other Southern Rhône. Unquestionably in the same realm as the 2017, 2016, 2010, 2005, 2003, and 2001, it has an incredible, full-bodied, massive style that somehow stays perfectly balanced, with flawless integration of its fruit, tannins, acidity, and alcohol. Lots of red, blue, and black fruits, loamy earth, Asian spice, licorice, and violet nuances emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building yet polished tannins, and a great, great finish. It’s a sexier, more opulent wine than the Les Hauts-Lieux release yet has the same perfect tannins that are so rare to find in the vintage. This required at least 4-5 years of bottle age and will drink brilliantly for 20-25+ years. |

WA 96 (10/2009): Gardenia, peony, and resinous herbs in the nose of Donnhoff's 2007 Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Spatlese give way to a palpably extract-rich palate of vibratory intensity, suffused with stony, saline, and tactile suggestions of mineral matter, yet at the same time rich orchard fruits. If the Krotenpfuhl was painted with water colors, the medium here is definitely oil, exhibiting both dynamic and intricate brush work as well as dense layering. This masterpiece - picked simultaneously with the corresponding Grosses Gewachs - was only beginning to show its depth in the spring and needed almost six months in bottle to really shine forth. Take as long as fate permits you to savor this; I can't imagine it disappointing a quarter century or more from now.
VM 93+ (2/2009): Tantalizing aromas of papaya, sweet herbs and incense. Discreet but intense black cherry fruit rises from the mid-palate, accompanied by brilliant acidity. Animated and finely spiced, with a deep, long finish. I may be underrating this. |

WA 98 (9/2009): Incredible nose of candied orange peel, preserved ginger and honeysuckle with a touch of wet pebbles. The palate is packed with minerals and spiced fruits. A high level of lively acidity perfectly balances the seductive sweetness. Very long, minerally finish.
VM 94 (2/2009): Rich golden yellow. Passion fruit, a floral nuance and a bit of licorice on the nose. Pineapple and honey give way to brisk spicy acidity on the palate. A well-balanced, vivid auslese that finishes smoky and long, with an almost salty minerality. |

| WA 94 (12/2011): Picked-out, like its Hermannshohle counterpart, in the last, early-November days of harvest, Donnhoff's 2010 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Auslese gold capsule was, he estimates, "perhaps 50% affected by botrytis, and dry botrytis, no mere rot." Candied lime rind and marzipan; lily and honeysuckle; white peach and salted caramel inform this wine's haunting nose and rich yet buoyant palate, with the mouthwatering savor that characterized the corresponding Spatlese undiminished. This needs some time in bottle to better focus, and it will be interesting to see whether it develops more sense of cut and brightness. But it's already irresistible, and almost sure to prove worth following for a quarter century or more. |

| WA 96 (2/2013): High-toned, distillate-like herbal extracts along with ripe fresh strawberry, apple and quince inform the scintillating nose and electrical charged palate of Donnhoff’s 2011 Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese. “We were able to just keep waiting on this site," he explains, “so that even this lightest wine from the Brucke was picked only in the last days of (regular) harvest." Hints of pits and seed, along with black tea, nut oils, zesty citrus, and myriad mineral impingements add to a sense of quickening that goes well beyond mere invigoration in this gem’s strikingly persistent, shimmeringly vibrant finish. I was left with salivary glands palpitating and arms covered in gooseflesh. It will probably be hard to resist such a wine at any point over the next quarter century, but those with the requisite remaining life expectancy should make an effort to defer for the duration the pleasure of at least the last bottle or two. |

WA 99 (10/2009): The over-ripe pear and quince featured in other nobly sweet wines of this collection are very much present in Donnhoff's 2007 Schlossbockelheimer Felsenberg Riesling Beerenauslese, along with aromas of distilled gentian, gardenia, lemon oil, freshly baked bread, and white truffle. The intensity of inner-mouth perfume here - orchard fruit, floral, and herbal distillates - is nearly beyond belief. Pear nectar, quince preserves, apple jelly, liquid gardenia, brown spices, and a certain saline and smoky suggestions of things mineral inform a finish of trance-inducing duration. This amazing elixir - harvested largely in the Turmchen section of the site - should be worthy of 40 years cellaring. When Donnhoff laughingly referred to this as the year of Felsenberg, he was not in fact kidding, nor was he referring just to the sheer number of bottlings!
VM 97 (1/2009): Rich golden yellow. Sublime aromas of candied citrus fruits, lemon oil and acacia honey. The succulent weight of papaya fruit levitates over the wine's understated minerality. The palate-staining finish boasts an impeccable balance of creamy fruit, smoky botrytis and herbal spices. An Outstanding effort for the vintage! |
