| VM 89 (5/2017): This bottling, as usual based in large part on Saarburg and Oberemmel fruit but also incorporating a bit from Wiltingen, delightfully illustrates the bright, animating acidity of its vintage. Fresh apple and pear are laced with zesty lemon and lime and underlain by wet stone on a firm, palpably extract-rich palate. Green herbal pungency and peat-like smokiness lend further interest to an exuberant and refreshing finish. David Schildknecht. |

| VM 95 (7/2016): The absence of A.P. number from the above description confirms that there is indeed but one 2014 vintage Müller Scharzhofberger Auslese (although there is also an “Auslese Goldkapsel”). Rainier cherry and mirabelle preserves are wreathed in honeysuckle and heliotrope in a performance whose creamy, enveloping richness and honeyed aura depart dramatically from the blazing brightness exhibited by the wines that led up to it. But then, this was picked out at the end of harvest, and even though that was less than two weeks after it began, a lot had happened in between by way of rain and rot, in this case very noble rot. The clinging finish here is downright soothing in comparison with the energy and penetrating, sharp intensity exhibited by the corresponding Spätlesen. That having been noted, juicy fresh grapefruit, lime and white peach all enliven the confitured and honeyed elements of this superb and seductive Auslese. (Drink between 2016-2045). David Schildknecht. |

| VM 91 (12/2013): Muskmelon, clove and nut oil on the nose, with a hint of apple blossom. Zesty, almost herbal peach pit flavor accented by delicate spices. Elegant and persistent on the back end, with a piquant slatey note, this kabinett is drier than some of years past and is my call for the finest kabinett of the vintage.. Joel B. Payne. |

| VM 95 (6/2020): Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. There is an animating, juicy fresh-fruit aspect as well, and a wonderful sense of both focus and transparency to stony and ore-like nuances. (Drink between 2020-2050). Dvid Schildknecht. |

JS 99 (9/2019): This has discreet aromatics, showing very fine stones and yellow grapefruit with a delicate, lemon-blossom perfume. The palate has a scintillatingly intense and focused feel with laser-guided acidity, driving a very long, pure and thrilling palate. Yellow citrus fruit abounds. Such precision is really special and the concentration in 2018 is immense. Drink or hold. WA 95+ (7/2019): The 2018 Halenberg Riesling GG is super precise, pure and fresh on the intense and stony, still reductive nose, with its notes of candied lemon and lime (that means: slightly greenish). On the palate, this is a rich and concentrated yet elegant, silky-textured, vital and powerful, persistently salty and tensioned Halenberg that is far too young to discover its full potential today. It's rich and elegant, refined and slightly tannic and needs time to develop its full potential. Tasted in July 2019. VM 93 (6/2020): Crushed stone and sea breeze along with zesty lime and grapefruit characterize both the pungent nose and the formidably concentrated palate impression. Firmer in feel than the corresponding Frühlingsplätzchen and with sharper, more clearly defined citricity and stony inflections, this shares sense of fullness (at something over 13% alcohol) with the present collection’s other dry wines, but evinces no heaviness and at most the merest hint of heat. Mouthwatering salinity and a shimmering sense of crystalline stony impingement rather unexpectedly rise to the occasion on a finish whose sheer fruit intensity is so prominent. David Schildknecht. |

| WA 93 (10/2020): The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a deep and flinty, stony and herbal bouquet that needs some time to open up. Remarkably deep and complex, round and textured on the palate, this is a charming, mouth-filling and intense WSU with serious grip and length. Still far from being evolved, this is a richer, more complex Kabinett that will start to impress in 5-10 years. Stimulatingly salty on the finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

JS 99 (9/2019): Very pure slate here, this is something unique. The elevated, steep and stony site has such strength of character, delivered with such purity. Gun smoke, gunflint and very fine fragrance with a streak of fresh lemons. So fine. The palate has a super fine and elegant feel, floating ballet-like over the palate. Such elegance and power. The finesse and length is really ethereal. Yellow-grapefruit juice and pith here. Wildly succulent at the long, salty finish. What a thrilling wine. Drink or hold. WA 97 (10/2019): Bright and clear fruit aromas intermix with flint stone and herbal aromas to open the spectacularly deep, dense and coolish, extremely mineral 2018 Felseneck Riesling GG. Very intense, rich and concentrated on the silky-textured and refreshing palate, this is a crystalline and silky yet dense and enormously mineral, tightly woven, dry and piquant Riesling with remarkable tannin structure and sustainable salinity. This Felseneck needs years to open up and also the biggest glass you can find. Tasted during the VDP Grosse Lage preview in Wiesbaden in August and two times at home in October 2019. VM 96 (6/2020): Zesty lime and struck flint pungency are joined on the nose by intimations of white currant and white peach as well as of alkaline, saline sea breeze. The midpalate is firm but polished, dense and full (at around 13% alcohol), yet exhibits an improbable sense of lift, with crunchy, taut-fruit freshness and cheek-pinching brightness such as one seldom witnesses from this vintage. The superbly focused, preternaturally persistent finish is vibrantly tongue-tingling, crushed-stone-saturated, mouthwateringly saline and refreshingly loaded with primary juiciness. Yet for all of the brightness on display here, there are also resonant, deep, piquant nuttiness and a low-toned stoniness suggestive of tectonic tension. “Based on my impressions in autumn [2018],” said Fröhlich – lovely though he claimed the harvest was – “you could never have gotten me to believe that we would end up with a wine like this.” And talk about the scarcely believable: Fröhlich left out of this cuvee a roughly thousand-bottle lot of Felseneck that was due to spend a second winter in cask, and which he thinks represents his finest dry wine of the vintage. Like its Stromberg counterpart but to an even more striking degree, this bottling illustrates a point on which I elaborated when introducing the Schäfer-Fröhlich 2017s – namely, that Bockenau’s top slopes take a back seat to none on the Nahe.David Schildknecht. |

| VM 94 (8/2020): Linden, heliotrope, quince and apple in jellied as well as fresh form are effusively evoked on the nose, and the creamy palate offers corresponding billowing inner-mouth perfume, confitured richness but also freshness of fruit, reflecting the healthy and marginally less ripe (i.e., not overripe!) bunches that were included in this en bloc harvest. The lusciously and seductively lingering finish preserves creaminess, refreshing juiciness and floral perfume while introducing an invigorating lick of cinnamon and a nibble of fresh ginger. All of this is underscored by a slightly more prominent sweetness than generally exhibited by Selbach-Oster “Rotlay” bottlings, a phenomenon doubtless attributable to lower-than-usual acidity. But the sweetness suits the wine’s personality, and never dominates. (Drink between 2019-2048). David Schildknecht. |

| WA 94+ (1/2023): There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022. |

WA 98 (6/2010): The 2006 Pingus is a spectacular effort. A glass-staining saturated opaque purple, it delivers an other-worldly perfume of smoke, lavender, mineral, scorched earth, and an amalgam of kinky black fruits. Voluptuous on the palate in a measured way, it has superb balance, layered, complex flavors, ripe tannin that is entirely covered by the fruit, and a decade of aging potential. This monumental wine will evolve effortlessly for 10-15 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. VM 95 (10/2008): Opaque purple. Powerful, mineral-driven aromas of blackberry, blueberry, creme de cassis, incense and floral oils. Fresh dark berry flavors are youthfully crunchy and strikingly pure, with mounting spiciness and minerality. Silky tannins add support to the broad, palate-staining fruit but quickly fade away, allowing the exotic dark berry flavors to stand out. The mineral element clings impressively on the long, sappy, sweet finish. A superb showing, and no doubt the last time I'll get to try this as it costs more per bottle than my car is worth. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 98 (6/2010): Vintage conditions required a stricter selection for the 2007 Pingus. The aromatics are more brooding but seriously multifaceted. Smoke, pencil lead, truffle, Asian spices, blackberry, and licorice notes are followed by a chewy, dense, rich, powerful wine with fully integrated oak, savory black fruits, ripe tannins, and a decade of aging potential. Drink it from 2020 to 2037 if not longer. VM 95 (10/2009): Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, mineral-driven aromas of black raspberry, bitter cherry, smoky minerals and potpourri, plus a sexy smoky note of cola. Sweet and powerful, with brilliant definition and intensity to the ripe dark berry and cherry flavors. Lush and creamy but energetic, with silky tannins giving shape to the expansive fruit. Highly concentrated but very young wine with a strong, sappy, penetrating finish that echoes the floral note. This is a weighty wine but there's no excess fat or thickness. Stash it away for at least another six years. |

Psi Ribera del Duero |

| WA 93+ (10/2021): The 2019 PSI combines their knowledge of the vineyards and their new winery. They learned a lot in 2018, a more heterogeneous vintage, and their sorting machine for grapes had to work a lot. 2019 was more homogeneous, an easier harvest when most people made better wine. In the winery, they invested in a simple building but top technology. They used some 10% Garnacha in the blend, which was done one year after aging the lots separately. It really reminds me of the young wines from Ribera del Duero from the early 1990s, with some aromas of orange peel, earthy and smoky (very mild) and with fine-grained tannins. It has good ripeness at 14% alcohol and integrated acidity but great balance. It showcases the style of the 2019s here, fresher than expected and still a sunny vintage, when 2018 was more crystalline. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. |
