2023 Kinsman Eades Aberro Chenin Blanc
Vintage: 2023
Region: USA Red
Color/Type: Red
Size: 750 ML
Tasting Notes:
JD 94 (4/2025): A brilliant effort from Diamond Mountain, the 2023 Chenin Blanc Aberro is 100% Chenin Blanc from the Ex-Reverie site. Bright citrus, leafy herbs, and minty nuances define the bouquet of this medium-bodied white. Rich yet fresh and energetic on the palate, it shows perfectly integrated acidity, bright fruit, and a complex, elegant, juicy personality that will shine on the dinner table. Drink bottles over the coming 4-5 years. (Drink between 2025-2030). VM 94 (12/2024): The 2023 Chenin Blanc is exceptional. Soaring and vibrant, the 2023 offers a striking mix of varietal character and Diamond Mountain personality. Citrus confit, marzipan, white flowers, lime and dried flowers soar out of the glass. This is a striking wine from five-year-old vines. I would give the 2023 a decant to help soften the finish. All of this fruit is from the former von Strasser property on Diamond Mountain. (Drink between 2025-2033). Antonio Galloni.

VM 97 (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Aphex Ecotone Vineyard is a potent, dense wine. Dried herbs, spice, tobacco and earthy notes lend tons of savory nuance. This wild, structured Cabernet is going to need a number of years to come together. It shows tons of energy and depth, even if all the elements aren't totally in harmony at this stage. Nigel Kinsman has done a tremendous job in taming tannins that can be quite fierce at this site. Time in the glass is especially beneficial here. (Drink between 2027-2041). Antonio Galloni. WA 96 (7/2024): A co-ferment of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc from Ecotone Vineyard, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Aphex is dark and plummy, combining black cherries and some earthy notes with a hint of dark chocolate. It's full-bodied, concentrated and rich yet harmonious, with a degree of elegance, no excess weight on the palate and a lingering, softy tannic finish. |

JD 98 (4/2025): From the old Thorevilos vineyard (now Ecotone), the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Aphex is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. Gorgeous blackcurrants, black olive, tobacco, and a beautiful meaty edge lead to a full-bodied, perfectly balanced palate with fine, polished tannins. This shows more depth, density, and structure than just about every wine in the vintage. Absolutely sensational 2022 that will drink beautifully over the coming two decades. (Drink between 2025-2045) VM 96 (12/2024): The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Aphex Ecotone Vineyard is packed with dark cherry, plum, blood orange, pomegranate, white pepper and slate. Aromatic and deep, with tons of fruit density and exceptional balance, the 2022 is seriously impressive All it needs is time to soften. Then again, this is Ecotone. (Drink between 2027-2042). JD 94 (4/2025): Based on 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Hierothesion delivers ripe red, blue, and black fruits, tobacco, leather, graphite, and crushed stone. Pure, elegant, and seamless on the palate, it's beautifully balanced with a silky profile. Already drinking beautifully but it will keep for 15 years or more. (Drink between 2025-2040). VM 92 (12/2024): The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Hierothesion is the entry-level offering in this range from Nigel and Shae Kinsman. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit and kick of orange peel are some of the notes that grace this exquisite, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon. Drops of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot surely help in that regard. (Drink between 2025-2032). Antonio Galloni. |

Kaannos Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon |
$475 |
2 |
|
| |
JD 100 (12/2023): Coming from the northern end of Vine Hill Ranch, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kaannos is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon raised in 70% new French oak. This deep purple-hued beauty offers a heavenly perfume of darker, almost blue fruits as well as leafy herbs, flowers, spice cabinet, camphor, and chocolate. I love its complexity on the nose, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a remarkable sense of refinement and elegance, fine yet building tannins, and an incredible finish. This magical, majestic, absolutely jaw-droppingly good Cabernet Sauvignon is a legend in the making. Hide bottles for 5-7 years if you can, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 30-40 years. (Drink between 2028-2063). VM 99 (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kannos Vine Hill Ranch, 100% Clone 4, is rich, expansive and broad. Dark cherry, mocha, spice, leather and tobacco all wrap around the palate in a positively stunning Cabernet. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of earthy, floral and savory notes that add character. This fruit once went to one of the most pedigreed wineries in Napa Valley. This is extremely elegant, and the purity here is just unbelievable. (Drink between 2027-2041). Antonio Galloni. WA 95+ (7/2024): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Käännös is composed of Clone 4 from Vine Hill Ranch. Notes of ripe cherries and dried herbs dominate the complex, elegant nose, while the full-bodied wine flows easily across the mid-palate in gentle, rich waves of flavor, finishing long, velvety and tannic. |

Kodo Cabernet Sauvignon |
$475 |

|
| |
VM 100 (12/2023): The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kodo emerges from one of the top sites in southern Oakville—a site I consider as elite as it gets, but that can't be named for the time being. A sensational wine, the 2021 saturates the palate with dense dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco. But, it’s the textural richness, resonance and persistence that impress most. This is a truly unforgettable wine. I would be thrilled to own it. (Drink between 2027-2041). Antonio Galloni. WA 95+ (7/2024): Sourced from the M-Bar Ranch (western Oakville, across Hopper Creek from Vine Hill Ranch), the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Kodo offers up dusty earth notes, mixed red and black cherries, some cassis notes and a hint of dried herbs. It's full-bodied, ripe and rich without being heavy, and it's bright on the long, softly tannic finish. Is there just a touch of alcoholic warmth evident? |

JD 97 (4/2025): Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from M Bar Ranch, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Kodo delivers darker currants and leafy herbs, with a plush, round, mouthfilling mid-palate. It has velvety tannins, integrated acidity, and beautiful balance, showing both plushness and density. This killer wine will drink beautifully over the coming two decades. (Drink between 2025-2045). VM 94 (12/2024): The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Kodo is another terrific wine in this range. Aromatic and pliant, the 2022 is super-pedigreed. It is texturally very pretty, even though the complexity of the best wines in the range is not quite there. With that said, these are relatively young vines. (Drink between 2027-2042). Antonio Galloni. |

JD 93 (12/2025): Based on 81% Sauvignon Blanc and 19% Sémillon and brought up 10 months in 25% new French oak, the 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Aisana offers beautiful varietal character in its gooseberry, ripe citrus, and minty herbal notes. It's medium-bodied and juicy, with terrific balance and purity. This polished, well-made Sauvignon Blanc will drink beautifully over the coming 5-7 years. Drink 2025-2031. (Drink between 2025-2031). VM 92 (11/2025): The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc Aisana is a very pretty, bright wine. White flowers, chalk, mint, white pepper and citrus notes abound. Racy and mineral-driven, the 2024 is positively stellar. This builds beautifully through the mid-palate and into a finish framed by a gentle kiss of French oak. (Drink between 2025-2030). | WA 93 (7/2024): The 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Alsana is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc (barrel fermented in French oak) and 25% Sémillon (fermented in stainless steel drums). Winemaker Nigel Kinsman says the math works out to about 25% new wood overall. Scents of lemon curd are joined by some riper fig and stone fruit, plus a hint of anise on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is plump and generous, then finishes long, citrusy and silky. |

| VM 94 (1/2025): The 2023 Pinot Noir Sea Field is a powerful, intensely mineral wine. Iron, gravel, red-toned fruit and rose petal are all finely scultped. Salivating acids and a spine of searing tannins give th Sea Fields its shape and insistent, driving personality. Bright saline notes extend the nauced, bracing finish. This nervy Pinot needs time in bottle to be at its most expressive. (Drink between 2026-2038). Antonio Galloni. |

| |
JD 94 (8/2025): From Ribbon Ridge, the 2022 Pinot Noir Sequitur Vineyard shows a bright medium red hue with vivid wild spice, cranberry, cinnamon, and iron-rich earth. Linear and focused on the palate, with fine tannins, bright acidity, and a citrusy finish, drink this 2025-2040. Audrey Frick. WA 93+ (11/2025): The 2023 Pinot Noir Sequitur Vineyard comes from mixed clone vines planted from 2012 to 2014 in marine-based soils adjacent to Beaux Frères's Upper Terrace Vineyard. Matured for 15 months in 50% new French oak, it has foresty aromas of wild berries, mushrooms, mossy bark and autumn leaves, revealing higher-toned citrus and potpourri as it airs in the glass. The medium-bodied palate boasts detailed, earth-laced flavors. It has soft, silky tannins, juicy acidity and a long, latent finish. It will benefit from time in the cellar. |

Cabernet Sauvignon |
$2,300 |
3 |
|
| |
JD 100 (12/2025): The epitome of class and elegance, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon offers pure crème de cassis, liquid violets, crushed stone, graphite, and cedar notes on the nose. It's full-bodied on the palate, with remarkably polished tannins, flawless overall balance, and incredible length. This is never the biggest or richest wine in the vintage, yet the sheer level of purity, structure, and depth is absolutely incredible. Compared to the 2021, this is less powerful and made in a more elegant style, yet it's every bit as profound and compelling. It builds beautifully with time in the glass and already offers pleasure yet won't hit prime time for a decade and will cruise for 50+ years. Drink 2035-2075. (Drink between 2035-2075). VM 98+ (11/2025): The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a huge bouquet that is immediately captivating. Dark fruit, menthol, licorice, cloves, graphite and dried herbs lend considerable aromatic intensity to play off the wine's deeply layered structure. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Screaming Eagle is the Lafite of Napa Valley. (Drink between 2033-2053). Antonio Galloni. WA 98 (5/2026): The 2023 Screaming Eagle is approximately 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. At this young age, the various components haven't yet quite harmonized, such that it's possible to pick out black cherries, graham crackers, redcurrants and faintly herbal notes on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is framed by softly dusty tannins yet shows tremendous focus, energy and length on the finish. Impressive. |

| JD 91 (7/2025): A bright ruby color, the 2023 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard comes from the Sonoma Coast is pretty and a little more subtle all around, with notes of fresh berries, fresh flowers, and baked earth. The palate is medium-bodied and has a leaner texture, as well as a clean, easygoing feel. It’s a more understated wine from Sojourn in this vintage to drink over the coming 6-7 years. JD 98 (12/2025): Based on 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 21 months in 67% new French oak, the 2023 Black Magic represents a best barrel selection blend offering vibrant blue fruits, cassis, liquid violets, graphite, camphor, and sappy floral notes. It's incredibly concentrated, with a seamless, ultra-pure, focused mouthfeel and notable freshness and acidity in a seamless, sensational, full-bodied style. It needs 4-6 years of cellaring but will keep for 40 years. Drink 2029-2065. VM 97 (11/2025): The 2023 Black Magic is a blend from Melanson, Vine Hill Ranch and To Kalon. Sumptuous black-toned fruit, gravel, licorice, menthol and chocolate build nicely, growing into a crescendo of aromas, flavors and textures that is truly captivating. It's one of the wines of the vintage at Tor. Antonio Galloni. WA 96-98 (6/2025): A barrel selection made in the winery as always, Tor's 2023 Black Magic looks to be a pretty complete, compelling example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (with perhaps a bit of Petit Verdot). There's an enticing hint of violets to the blackberries and cassis on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is concentrated, structured and firm, with a long, richly textured finish. |

| WA 94+ (1/2023): There is around 20% new oak in the 2020 Flor de Pingus, and because it has a little younger vines (there was a land-consolidation project in La Horra in 2006!), there'll be some Garnacha starting in 2021 and maybe some oak vats for aging too. All this shows the direction, where he found structure and volume in the palate, with textured tannins. It's harmonious and elegant, aromatic and floral, perfumed and showy, with contained ripeness and around 14% alcohol. The palate is quite powerful, with abundant but fine tannins. 110,000 bottles were filled in July 2022. |

WA 98 (6/2010): The 2006 Pingus is a spectacular effort. A glass-staining saturated opaque purple, it delivers an other-worldly perfume of smoke, lavender, mineral, scorched earth, and an amalgam of kinky black fruits. Voluptuous on the palate in a measured way, it has superb balance, layered, complex flavors, ripe tannin that is entirely covered by the fruit, and a decade of aging potential. This monumental wine will evolve effortlessly for 10-15 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. VM 95 (10/2008): Opaque purple. Powerful, mineral-driven aromas of blackberry, blueberry, creme de cassis, incense and floral oils. Fresh dark berry flavors are youthfully crunchy and strikingly pure, with mounting spiciness and minerality. Silky tannins add support to the broad, palate-staining fruit but quickly fade away, allowing the exotic dark berry flavors to stand out. The mineral element clings impressively on the long, sappy, sweet finish. A superb showing, and no doubt the last time I'll get to try this as it costs more per bottle than my car is worth. Josh Raynolds. |

WA 98 (6/2010): Vintage conditions required a stricter selection for the 2007 Pingus. The aromatics are more brooding but seriously multifaceted. Smoke, pencil lead, truffle, Asian spices, blackberry, and licorice notes are followed by a chewy, dense, rich, powerful wine with fully integrated oak, savory black fruits, ripe tannins, and a decade of aging potential. Drink it from 2020 to 2037 if not longer. VM 95 (10/2009): Glass-staining ruby. Pungent, mineral-driven aromas of black raspberry, bitter cherry, smoky minerals and potpourri, plus a sexy smoky note of cola. Sweet and powerful, with brilliant definition and intensity to the ripe dark berry and cherry flavors. Lush and creamy but energetic, with silky tannins giving shape to the expansive fruit. Highly concentrated but very young wine with a strong, sappy, penetrating finish that echoes the floral note. This is a weighty wine but there's no excess fat or thickness. Stash it away for at least another six years. |

Psi Ribera del Duero |

| WA 93+ (10/2021): The 2019 PSI combines their knowledge of the vineyards and their new winery. They learned a lot in 2018, a more heterogeneous vintage, and their sorting machine for grapes had to work a lot. 2019 was more homogeneous, an easier harvest when most people made better wine. In the winery, they invested in a simple building but top technology. They used some 10% Garnacha in the blend, which was done one year after aging the lots separately. It really reminds me of the young wines from Ribera del Duero from the early 1990s, with some aromas of orange peel, earthy and smoky (very mild) and with fine-grained tannins. It has good ripeness at 14% alcohol and integrated acidity but great balance. It showcases the style of the 2019s here, fresher than expected and still a sunny vintage, when 2018 was more crystalline. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. |
