| WA 93 (10/2009): The 2005 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is sweet, sensual and perfumed. Today the wine remains extremely reticent, but the tannins show extraordinary purity and silkiness, suggesting the only thing missing is time. For now the 2005 Asili shows great integrity in its dark red fruit, with notable persistence on the palate and a round, powerful close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. |

WA 95+ (10/2009): The recently-bottled 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia is, as expected, somewhat closed down at this stage from an aromatic perspective. That said, it is impossible to ignore the wine’s richness and depth, both of which are impressive. With time in the glass hints of sweet roses, cherries, spices and tar emerge, all framed by impeccably silky tannins. As always, readers should taste this wine as soon as possible, as it will almost certainly head for a slumber during which it will be impossible to evaluate with any accuracy. Today, this mid-weight, graceful Barolo Cascina Francia looks to be accessible relatively early, which means around age 10-12 give or take. It is another superb Barolo from Giacomo Conterno. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030. VM 95 (7/2016): Conterno’s 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia has developed in a very pretty, delicate wine. Open-knit and supple, the 2005 offers good depth and vibrancy to match its silky, nuanced personality. The 2005 is an especially polished Cascina Francia that is just entering the early part of its plateau of maturity. Interestingly, it is also the total stylistic opposite of the much more virile Monfortino. Antonio Galloni. JS 93 (3/2011): Aromas of truffles, forest floor, and ripe fruit. On the palate, leather and orange peel. This is rich and powerful, with some serious tannins. I love the fruit now, but should be peaking after 2014. WS 91 (12/2010): Wonderful aromas of plum and sultana, with hints of wood. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins, plenty of ripe fruit and a citrus undertone that turns to a mahogany and light chocolate undertone. Complex and tight. Best after 2011. 1,665 cases made. |

| WA 93 (8/2010): The 2005 Terra di Lavoro is an excellent choice for readers seeking a fairly approachable vintage that won’t require extended cellaring. Because of the cold summer, this is a rather delicate Terra di Lavoro laced with red cherries, crushed flowers and a fresh, vinous quality I find highly appealing. The 2005 is a mid-weight Terra di Lavoro, but the lively acidity should allow the wine to age gracefully for a number of years. The aromatics and flavors aren’t fully developed, but with some air the 2005 is relatively approachable today. It is a beautiful Terra di Lavoro that only suffers from the wines surrounding it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025. |

| VM 92 (6/2008): The estate's flagship wine, the 2005 Guado al Tasso, possesses gorgeous aromatics and a core of vibrant, dark fruit framed by finessed tannins. Medium to full-bodied, it shows superb balance, particularly in the use of French oak, something that I haven't always been able to say in the past. With air, attractive nots of wild herbs, smoke, minerals and sweet toasted oak develop to complete this very pretty Guado al Tasso. (Drink between 2013-2019.) Antonio Galloni. |

VM 94 (7/2016): The 2005 Barolo has come together beautifully in bottle. Over the years, the 2005 has gained body and depth, while the contours have softened nicely. Sweet dark cherry, plum, mint, licorice and spices meld together in an effortless, gracious Barolo that can be enjoyed now. Readers who like more tertiary complexity will want to give the 2005 at least another few years, as it is still quite primary, fresh and vibrant. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (2/2011): The 2005 Barolo is super-delicate and finessed. This is a decidedly restrained, feminine style of Barolo laced with roses, raspberries, jasmine and berries. It will be fascinating to see which direction the 2005 takes from here. At times the wine appears to be putting on additional weight, but it nevertheless retains an element of frailty that is actually quite attractive. I rate the 2005 just behind the 2004, 2006 and 2007, but it is a gorgeous wine, and easily one of the very finest wines of the vintage. WS 94 (12/2011): Intense eucalyptus, raspberry, strawberry and tar notes mark this vibrant red, which is perfumed, despite being lean and focused, with a long, mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2012 through 2030. |

| VM 93 (8/2010): Readers looking for a recent Montevetrano that is ready or close to ready to drink should consider the 2005. Early tertiary notes of tobacco and smoke have begun to develop. The fruit is round, soft and harmonious all the way through to the long, polished finish. This is a relatively simple, accessible Montevetrano in this context, but it should drink well reasonably early. The balance and overall sense of harmony remain that of a first class red. (Drink between 2013-2025). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 93 (4/2010): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is quite a bit darker and richer than the straight Brunello. Cherries, plums, spices and French oak meld together beautifully in this silky, textured red. In 2005 the Tenuta Nuova boasts fabulous overall balance in a fairly restrained style for this bottling. Kirsch, roses and spices linger on the dark, enveloping finish. This is a terrific effort from Casanova di Neri. The Tenuta Nuova is made from vineyards in Le Cetine and Pietradonice, both located in the southern part of Montalcino. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. JS 93 (12/2010): It may not be 2004, but this is a rich and dense wine with lots of blueberry and dried berry. Full bodied, with lovely combination of fruit and lightly toasted oak. Enjoy now or let it age for a few years. WS 92 (6/2010): Exhibits blueberry and vanilla cream, with zabaglione undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety, chewy tannins and a long aftertaste of sweet fruit. Solid and rich for the vintage. Best after 2011. 4,935 cases made. VM 91 (7/2010): Good full ruby-red. Aromatic nose combines red raspberry, superripe red cherry and dried herbs (rosemary, sage, bay leaf). Then sweet, suave and wonderfully fine-grained, with fleshy red cherry and red plum flavors given shape by harmonious acidity. Finishes with excellent length, but becomes a touch austere on the back. |

VM 93 (5/2011): The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is typical Sangiovese from the southern part of the zone in a cool year. A gorgeous, translucent red, the Riserva offers up a classic profile of red fruit, tobacco, underbrush, mint and crushed flowers. The 2005 naturally has quite a bit of primary fruit left, but the real joy will come in another 5-10 years when the full range of tertiatry aromas is fully developed. This understated beauty is not an immediate wine, but in time it will thrill those who can look beyond instant gratification. An impeccably long, mineral-laced finish points to a bright future. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. JS 94 (7/2011): Ripe fruit, with dried cherries and flowers. Full and soft, with velvety tannins and a fruity finish. Really delicious now. WS 91 (6/2011): This has softened up somewhat, with bright acidity framing the cherry, sweet plum and spice notes. There's still an edge of tannins, but this is well put together. Best from 2012 through 2020. 833 cases made. |

JS 95 (6/2013): Still very young. Shows complex aromas of ripe fruit, blackberries, plums and currants. Polished, with soft tannins, a full body and a very long finish. Drink or hold. WS 95 (10/2008): Displays beautiful aromas of ripe fruit, with currant, plum and blackberry. This complex and full-bodied Tuscan red has soft, polished tannins and a long, long finish. Shows a deft hand in the winemaking. Best after 2012. 11,660 cases made. WA 93 (1/2010): The 2005 Ornellaia (magnum) is a lovely, silky wine graced with expressive, perfumed fruit and terrific overall harmony. This is a decidedly lithe, feminine Ornellaia, but the wine has more than enough freshness to develop beautifully over the coming years. The estate coped quite well with repeated spells of rain during the harvest. Simply put, the 2005 Ornellaia is a gorgeous wine from a challenging year. The 2005 Ornellaia is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine spent 18 months in French oak, 70% new. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025. VM 93 (6/2008): The medium-bodied 2005 Ornellaia shows plenty of delineation in its dark cherries, blueberries, spices, minerals and crushed rocks. The 2005 doesn't quite have the detail of the 2004 or the richness of the 2006, but it does offer notable finesse and clarity in an understated style for this wine. My impression is that this will be a relatively early-maturing vintage of Ornellaia, which is not a bad thing, considering the age-worthiness of the two vintages which surround it. In 2005 Ornellaia is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It is big success in this vintage. |

| VM 89 (7/2015): Quintarelli's 2005 Valpolicella Classico Superiore is laced with dried flowers, mint, dried cherries and anise. The fresh, cool growing season resulted in a bright, somewhat slender Valpolicella with lively acidity. At the same time, the flavors are a bit forward, suggesting, the 2005 needs to be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 96 (6/2013): Ripe strawberry and black cherry on the nose, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit, vanilla and even white pepper. Long and rich. This is really amazing. WS 96 (7/2009): Shows ripe strawberry and black cherry aromas, with hints of flowers. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and lots of fruit, vanilla and white pepper character. Long and rich. Best after 2012. 900 cases made. VM 93 (11/2009): Good deep red. High-pitched aromas of blackberry and bitter chocolate; more like the basic Marcenasco in its fruit quality than the Conca. There's a penetrating quality and enticing minerality to the pure dark berry flavors; this, too, strikes me as Burgundian. Finishes with the densest tannins and the greatest length of these three bottlings, but the tannins are fine-grained and arrive late, coating the teeth. A very good example of the grand cru quality of the Rocche. WA 93 (10/2009): The 2005 Barolo Rocche shows lovely richness and depth in its dark fruit, flowers, herbs and French oak. The Rocche comes together beautifully in the glass, as the tannins soften a touch and the wine gains clarity. High-toned, floral aromatics accompany the fruit through to the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. |

WS 94 (10/2008): Dark ruby in color, showing aromas of currant, new oak and fresh herbs, with hints of spices. Full-bodied, with very chewy tannins and an Outstanding concentration of fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Needs plenty of bottle age. Best after 2012. 20,000 cases made. VM 93 (12/2015): The 2005 Sassicaia is in a gorgeous spot right now. A super-classic Cabernet Sauvignon bouquet reveals striking nuance as layers of dark fruit begin to unfold on the palate. Smoke, game, licorice, tobacco and menthol add the final shades of nuance. The 2005 doesn't appear to be built for the long haul, but it is very beautiful, complete and rewarding today. Antonio Galloni. WA 93 (4/2017): The 2005 Bolgheri Sassicaia is more of an extrovert and a fast-burner. It is a reflection of a warm vintage and a more pronounced stylistic signature in terms of its winemaking approach. The effect is very beautiful, indeed, with dried cherry, plum, spice, tobacco and grilled herb. Yet, the overall messaging is focused on power and volume. The background music is hard to hear. Despite its opulence, there's less dimension to behold. Brawn trumps finesse and dark fruit covers the ethereal aromas. It is well built, however, and should hold steady for the next ten years, if not more. |

WS 95 (10/2007): Beautiful aromas of blackberry, dried currant and Indian spices follow through to a full body, with fine tannins and a long, caressing finish. Wonderful texture. Focused, refined aftertaste of blackberry, brown sugar and spices. Merlot. Best after 2010. 680 cases made. VM 93 (8/2007): Dark red with purple highlights. Very pure, highly complex aromas of black currant, blackberry, violet, espresso and dark chocolate, with the telltale licorice component of this wine. Rich yet lithe on the palate, with juicy black and red fruit flavors complicated by black truffle and minerals. Extremely long, silky-smooth finish features seamless tannins. WA 92 (6/2008): The 2005 Redigaffi (Merlot) is the most finessed, elegant Redigaffi I can recall. This is a Redigaffi that emphasizes clarity and precision over sheer power. Suggestions of new leather, spices, plums, currants, minerals, blueberry jam and toasted oak emerge from this medium-bodied effort. Although the 2005 might not have the structure of previous vintages, the tannins are beautifully balanced and the wine offers terrific overall harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022. |
