| WA 89-90 (10/1995): This tasting consisted of each of the varietal components of Las Cases, followed by the final blend for Leoville-Las Cases. The final wine is measurably better than any of its components. The soft Merlot exhibits a smoky, vegetal note, medium body, and a round, straightforward finish. The Cabernet Franc displays aromatic complexity, elegance, and good ripeness, as well as a tart style. The medium-bodied, closed, structured, firm Cabernet Sauvignon reveals bitterness and hardness in the finish. Although good, it is not special. The opaque-colored Petit Verdot possesses a high tannin level, more concentration and intensity than the Cabernet Sauvignon, and an astringent finish. |

| WA 96 (12/1995): The opaque-colored 1992 exhibits a huge, chocolatey, smoky nose crammed with gobs of black fruits, This soft, voluptuously-textured, full-bodied wine boasts remarkable concentration and purity. It is a round, flattering, luscious style of Cabernet Sauvignon that will be hard to resist when young. It should keep for 15+ years. |

| WA 94 (12/1995): The 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection (a February, 1996 release) is superior to the 1991 and 1990. The 1992 displays an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by huge, full-throttle aromatics offering a blast of sweet, toasty new oak combined with exceptional red and black fruits. Full-bodied, rich, and concentrated, with not a hard edge to be found, this low acid, fat, delicious Cabernet will be drinkable upon its release; it will last for 12-15 years. |

WA 91 (12/1995): It seems like yesterday that Ric Forman began his career, yet he is now one of California's veteran wine-makers. From his early days (nearly 20 years ago) at Sterling he has built an impressive resume. The proprietor of beautiful vineyards tucked high in the hills between the Silverado Trail and Conn Valley, he has launched a new wine, a Merlot from a vineyard called Thorvilos, that he developed along with the well-known viticulturist, David Abreu. The 1995, which had just finished malolactic fermentation, blew me away, but the wine will not be in the marketplace for several years. The 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon is beginning to shut down and reveal more tannin. Some of the baby fat and thickness have taken a back seat to the wine's more structured aspects. Rich and full-bodied, it is less flattering and showy than when I first tasted it. It possesses outstanding concentration, as well as the potential for 20+ years of evolution.
VM 89 (7/2015): Good bright, full red. Less fruity on the nose than the 1991 or 1990, with a black cherry note complicated by licorice, menthol, pepper and shoe polish. Plummy and savory in the mouth but a bit simple and not nearly as interesting as the outstanding 1991. Finishes classically dry and savory, but the substantial, slightly drying tannins cut off the wine's fruit. I'd drink this soon. (Drink between 2015-2019). Stepen Tanzer. |
