BH 87 (4/2024): (from vineyards in Santenay, Marsannay and the lower portions of Volnay.) An unusually elegant nose for the genre features perfumed aromas of plum, violet and cool cherry. There is both a lovely texture and energy to the delicious middleweight flavors that deliver fine length on the lingering finish where the only nit is a touch of warmth. Serve it cool though and you won't notice. Drink 2025+. Outstanding!
VM 88-90 (1/2024): The 2022 Bourgogne is bursting with red purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and lavender. This mid-weight, fruity Bourgogne is an absolute delight. Enjoy it over the next few years. It’s a great introduction to this range. Neal Martin. |

BH 94 (4/2025): A beautifully layered, and more expressive, nose features notes of exotic tea and just cracked black pepper on the fresh blend of both red and black pinot fruit. There is markedly better mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins on the impressively persistent and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and quite classy as well. Drink 2035+.
JM 94-96 (10/2024): A rich ruby purple. The bouquet has a flamboyant weight of fruit backed up by a certain amount of oak as well. Henri finds lime blossom, which adds a further lick of freshness to the vibrant cherries. The fruit continues on the palate long after the fine tannins. Promising. Drink from 2032-2040. |

A very ripe but not surmature nose of cassis, earth and a hint of the sauvage gives way to exceptionally rich, round and velvety-textured flavors that display impressive size, weight and power, all wrapped in a long and overtly austere finish. Though quite ripe this is built along the lines of a classic example of Clos de Vougeot. Drink 2022+.
WA 92-94 (2/2012): The 2010 Clos Vougeot is impressive. Underlying veins of minerality support focused fruit in this decidedly racy, full-bodied Clos Vougeot. Power, richness and sheer energy flow as the wine opens up in the glass. Sweet, floral notes flesh out on the expressive, focused finish. The 80% new oak is very deftly balanced. This is a dazzling wine from Henri Boillot. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035.

BH 93 (4/2016): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A ripe but restrained nose features notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, humus, smoke and exotic tea scents along with a background hint of oak toast. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. This beauty will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2017): (100% vendange entier; the Boillots work these vines in Grand Maupertuis themselves): Saturated deep red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and rose petal communicate striking fruity lift for young Clos Vougeot. Very rich, sappy and deep, but but with no sign of overripeness and markedly different in style from the Côte de Beaune samples that preceded it in my tasting, partly due to its whole-cluster treatment. | VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with lively acids and a powdery but elegantly refined chassis of structuring tannins, concluding with a long and resonant finish.
BH 92 (4/2020): ( from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) This plays right on the edge of volatile acidity with its nose of poached plum, black raspberry and warm earth. The middle weight flavors are not especially dense but do possess a highly attractive mouthfeel while displaying good power on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This moderately firm effort is somewhat awkward at present, but I suspect that it will recover with age. Drink 2033+. |

JM 91-94 (10/2024): A deep ruby purple. Powerful dense red fruit without detail as yet. Solid, concentrated, four-square, with no shortage of fruit, and a few tannins completing the muscular structure. Perhaps not quite as persistent as the best in the cellar. Drink from 2031-2037. |

BH 94 (4/2013): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Somewhat counterintuitively this possesses riper fruit with distinct sauvage notes to the humus and mineral-inflected, brooding and very cool wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent power to the driving and highly energetic, stony and robust flavors that display impressive mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in an austere, explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a serious wine but then again, isn’t Chambertin virtually always serious in its youth? Drink 2026+.
VM 92-95 (2/2013): Good dark red. Very pure but reticent aromas of dark berries, mocha and sandalwood; smells creamy. Then lush and seamless in the mouth, but with great energy to the flavors of black cherry clafouti, dark chocolate, licorice and pepper. The explosive, slowly mounting finish features substantial fine-grained tannins and black fruit and pepper elements complicated by saline minerality. |

Like the Clos de Bèze, here too there is a whiff of volatile acidity though in this case it is decidedly more subtle though still perceptible on the more restrained and more floral cool red currant scents. The equally restrained and transparent large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a youthfully austere and markedly firm finale. I would make the same observation here as I did with the Bèze, which is to say it’s impossible to predict how VA will affect any given person’s perception of a wine but in this case, I was less bothered by it than with the Clos de Bèze. Drink 2036+. |

This is also beautifully layered and while not quite as spicy, it’s close though the fruit profile is derived more from plum and dark currant. The super-sleek and more mineral-driven flavors possess medium density and excellent underlying tension that gives the firm and youthfully austere finish real punch. Not surprisingly given that this is Chambertin, extended patience will be necessary. Drink 2035+.
JM 95-97 (10/2024): More purple and less ruby compared to Beze. A greater depth of fruit, more layers to it. I loved the vigour of the Clos de Bèze but this has more of a natural majesty. Profound, with a silky texture on top of a hard rock Chambertin. Drink from 2032-2045. |

There is again very fine volume to the sappy, rich and powerful medium-bodied flavors that, much like the Fremiets, remain relatively refined before culminating in a dusty, saline and beautifully persistent finish. This is lovely and it’s not so structured that it couldn’t be approached after only 5 or so years. Drink 2027+. |

Brooding aromas of dark fruits and menthol. Chalky and penetrating but youthfully tight, conveying a stronger impression of medicinal reserve than the Volnay Les Caillerets. A distinctly masculine, classic Pommard, juicy but imploded in the early going. The mounting finish features firm, mouth-saturating tannins, hints of spices and white pepper, and savory soil suggestions. WA 93+ (1/2020): The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is the last time Boillot will produce this appellation, made from purchased grapes. Offering up aromas of dark berries, cassis, baking chocolate, candied peel and licorice, the wine is medium to full-bodied, muscular and chalky, with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and a long finish.

BH 93 (4/2012): Aromatically speaking, this is not all that dissimilar from the Champans except that it's more restrained and adds a note of black cherry as well. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the impressively complex and mouth coating flavors that brim with dry extract that confers a velvety texture onto the lingering finish. The underlying tannins are notably firm but well-integrated but note that this too will need ample cellar time to arrive at its peak. Drink 2022+. Outstanding!
VM 93-95 (2/2012): Bright ruby-red. Knockout nose combines dark fruits, minerals, bitter chocolate and underbrush. Offers superb density and thickness without excess weight, with the wine's substantial baby fat given shape by building minerality. Intense black fruit flavors stain the palate on the very long, strong finish, which features noble, fine-grained tannins.
WA 91-93 (2/2012): The 2010 Volnay Les Santenots is the most refined and impeccable of these 2010 Volnays from Henri Boillot. Ripe, silky tannins buffer the fruit in this sumptuous, impeccably refined Volnay. Floral notes wrap around the deep, persistent finish. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030. |

There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

The Bienvenues is a bit less overt in its bouquet than the Criots, but richer, deeper and more seamless in its fruit. Here, too, it is the wine’s sheer pedigree that stands out most. BH 94 (6/2013): This is also notably ripe but the aromas do not run to the exotic as the honeysuckle, apricot, white peach and subtle spice notes are entirely classic. There is an appealing succulence to the delicious, intense and strikingly fine medium-bodied flavors and while there is certainly a sense of focused power present on the long, clean and refined finish, this is essentially a Bienvenues of finesse. BH 96 (6/2024): (from Aloxe.) A markedly floral-suffused nose somewhat grudgingly reveals its array of exuberantly fresh and spicy Granny Smith apple, acacia blossom, oyster shell and iodine. While there is certainly good richness to the succulent and seductive broad-shouldered flavors, the mouthfeel is really quite sleek with both good detail and power to the taut, serious and built-to-age finale that is given a bit of lift from the presence of bitter citrus rind. This is almost painfully intense and youthfully austere effort could use better depth but that should present no particular problem if it's given a chance to develop. This too is first-rate. VM 93-95 (1/2024): The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is a blend of fruit from Aloxe-Corton (75%) and Pernand-Vergelesses (25%), a combination that works well in giving the wine balance. There's quite a bit of phenolic intensity and youthful austerity here. Herbs, crushed rocks, graphite, mint and citrus confit build nicely. Wonderfully delicate and discreet on the nose, hinting at lemon drop and minerals; Boillot says he's normally the first to harvest in Montrachet and this wine certainly conveys an early-picked aspect. Pure and silky on the palate and thicker than the Chevalier-Montrachet, but with terrific inner-mouth cut. Displays impeccable balance on the very suave, slowly rising finish. Can a wine be both understated and explosive? "Two thousand seventeen is a real fruit year," says Boillot, and in fact this citrussy, floral Montrachet is not yet showing the site's iodiney minerality. But that will come. Stephen Tanzer.

The sleek, precise and borderline painfully intense flavors aren't quite as imposing as the of the Bâtard (see Domaine Boillot) but they are notably finer with seemingly an unending reserve of dry extract that buffers the very firm acid spine on the massively long finish. This is a superb Montrachet to basically buy and forget you own it for at least a decade and it wouldn't surprise me if this beauty needed all of 15 years to reach its full potential. Brilliant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very focused and pure with just the right amount of acidity. Very harmonious, this is a gorgeous Clos des Forêts that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure (at least). Neal Martin.
BH 91-93 (1/2022): 9from an enormous 7.1 ha monopole planted in the early 1950s.) Deep ruby. Markedly earthy aromas include notes of garrigue, poached plum, cassis and a smoky component. The rich, energetic and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors evidence solid muscle and power on the moderately rustic, balanced and complex finale. This beautifully long effort is a classic Nuits in style. Drink 2032+. Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (1/2022): The 2020 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru is more ethereal, unwinding in the glass with scents of raspberries, violets, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Full-bodied, taut and concentrated, it's deep and multidimensional, with lively acids and a layered core of ripe fruit, framed by fine, powdery tannins.
BH 92-95 (4/2022): Ripe if restrained aromas of violet, plum liqueur and dark berry coulis are trimmed in hints of spice and the sauvage. The super-sleek and almost painfully intense large-scaled flavors brim with both minerality and sappy dry extract that serves to buffer the dense if relatively fine-grained tannins shaping the hugely long, serious and youthfully austere finale. This is an imposingly scaled Clos du Roi that should age gracefully for the better part of the next two decades. (Drink starting 2037).
VM 91-93 (12/2021): The 2020 Corton Clos-du-Roi Grand Cru, containing 100% whole bunch, has the most perfumed and floral of the trio of Corton’s from the Domaine, seductive, quite feminine. The palate is fleshy and rounded, very smooth and quite polished with hints of mocha and dark chocolate towards the finish. This is deceptively approachable - give it five years in bottle to fully come together. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin. |

VM 94 (1/2023): The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru is the usual blend of Taillepieds and Clos des Chênes. It has a vivid nose with Bing cherry, wild strawberry and a touch of blackcurrant, quite citrus in style and very focused. The palate is beautifully balanced with pliant tannins, fresh acidity and ripe red fruit, with wonderful mineralité and delineation on the finish. This is one of the finest reds that I have tasted from Coche-Dury in recent years. (Drink between 2024-2036). Neal Martin.
WA 93+ (1/2023): The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru wafts from the glass with aromas of dark berries, peonies, baking chocolate and sweet forest floor. Medium to full-bodied, supple and sensual, with refined tannins, lively acids and a long, penetrating finish, it's balanced to age with grace. |

JM 93-95 (11/2021): A vivid and vibrant fresh purple, reflecting the low pH (3.30). The nose is exuberant and vivacious at the same time. This is a late malolactic wine and has been reduced, but not today. Despite the thick texture and super charged raspberry, signs of higher alcohol (in fact 15%) I don’t feel any specific heat and the Charmes-Chambertin shows a pretty long finish.
VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin.
BH 92-94 (1/2022): This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. This also appears to offer very fine quality in a built-to-age package. (Drink starting 2035). |

VM 94-96 (12/2021): The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Thet palate is succulent on the entry with candied orange peel infusing the mainly black fruit that merges into more red fruit towards the velvety finish. Quite gorgeous. (Drink between 2026-2048). BH 92-94 (1/2022): A fresh and unusually expressive nose features notes of red and dark cherry, white pepper and a hint of kirsch. The delicious and intense middle weight flavors possess fine depth and persistence on the equally youthfully austere finale that is also sufficiently austere to easily repay 12+ years of cellaring. Fine quality here. (Drink starting 2032)
JM 91-94 (11/2021): The Clos Vougeot has just finished malolactic so is difficult to read. Perhaps the deepest darkest colour of the cellar. The nose is very backward, blackcurrant and elderberry with very dark raspberry. Slightly dry tannins but I put that down to the late malolactic. Peppery notes here. |

WA 91 (1/2023): The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has turned out beautifully in bottle, opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and baking spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and primary palate with a vibrant core of fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. This isn't in any way austere, but it will require more patience than its 2019 or 2021 counterparts to reach its peak of expression.
BH 89 (1/2023): Notes of green tea and floral elements add breadth to the aromas of spicy and earthy red currant and cherry. The delicious and appealing energetic medium weight flavors possess a really lovely texture before culminating in a compact, serious and youthfully austere finale. This quality effort is built to reward mid- to perhaps even longer-term cellaring.
VM 89 (1/2023): The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has a heavily perfumed blackberry and crushed strawberry nose, quite sensual, touches of bergamot. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, rather generous with a lovely, slightly saline finish. Neal Martin. |

VM 89-91 (12/2021): The 2020 Gevrey-Chamerbtin Vieilles Vignes offers a mixture of red and black fruit laced with blood orange and quince, nicely focused with a sense of energy developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. Fine acidity, just slightly confit-like towards the finish that erodes a little of the precision compared to other cuvees, though there is satisgfying length. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin.
BH 88-90 (1/2022): Ripe and nicely layered aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, warm earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The juicy and fleshy medium weight flavors possess both good volume and verve before terminating in a mildly rustic and warm finale. (Drink starting 2027). |

BH 90-93 (1/2022): Very ripe yet still reasonably fresh aromas are comprised by notes of roasted plum, black cherry, cassis and earth. The dense, powerful and muscular broad-shouldered flavors are supported by a very firm tannic spine on the robust, serious and very compact finale. This is quite impressive though certainly not typical. Drink 2035+.
JM 90-93 (11/2021): No separate HD cuvée was made this year as there was not enough wine, after the hail as well as in a dry year. Long slow fermentation and the malolactic is still happening. Black purple. Ignore the nose for now, as it shows malolactic elements. Super intensity, a bit of Bovril meatiness, really hard to judge though looks like will broadly be the same pattern as the others, though perhaps even more concentrated. |

The sleek, finer and more precisely detailed middle weight flavors possess a beguiling sense of underlying tension while offering fine length on the firm, youthfully austere and lingering finale. While not absolutely necessary, this should be capable of rewarding all of a decade's worth of cellaring. (Drink starting 2030).
VM 90-92 (12/2021): The 2020 Volnay Santenots 1er Cru comes from vines located just below the Clos des Santenots. Fully de-stemmed, it has a slightly smudged bouquet, black cherries and boysenberry fruit, touches of pressed violets. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, nicely focused, maybe more high-toned than its peers but then again, that is the precocity of this Premier Cru being expressed in a warm vintage. This is unusually powerful, if a bit less refined, compared to its usual understated character and overall, it is really quite impressive.

WA 91+ (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Les Ouzeloy is showing very well, bursting with notes of dark berries and plums mingled with licorice and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, with good concentration and powdery structuring tannins, it's built for the cellar.
VM 87 (1/2023): The 2020 Marsannay Les Ouzeloy has a tight-knit nose with blueberry and boysenberry fruit that retain fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, figgy entry, perhaps quite Tuscan in style with good length on the finish. Fine. (Drink between 2025-2038). Neal Martin.
BH 87 (1/2023): Completely opaque appearance. The very ripe yet quite fresh and expressive nose presents aromas of red and dark cherry, poached plum and newly turned earth. There is outstanding concentration to the suave, mouthcoating and almost thick flavors are buffered almost impressive intensity on the rustic, firm and moderately grippy finish that also comes up somewhat short. This is also completely atypical. (Drink starting 2028). |

BH 99 (1/2022): A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially. Drink 2050+.
JM 96-100 (11/2021): An imperial robe as we have come to expect. The bouquet is very backward, no problem there either, all about the fruit, the new wood is irrelevant. Starts slowly then builds immaculately, still too early really to see the detail. As always it is about grace style intensity and length rather than overt muscle, all the finesse one can want. Long and lovely. |

| WA 98+ (8/2014): This was not in the tasting at the chateau, but I opened two bottles on my return home, because this is another near-perfect wine from Montrose. It is an unusual two-grade blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot. The wine emerged from another very hot, sunny, dry growing season, with early, generous flowering. Harvest in Montrose took place between September 11 and 28. The wine has never had any issues with brett, making it a somewhat safer selection than the more irregular 1990. Like a tortoise, the 1989 has finally begun to rival and possibly eclipse its long-time younger sibling, the 1990. The wine is absolutely spectacular and in auction sells for a much lower premium than the 1990. That should change. This is a magnificent Montrose, showing notes of loamy soil undertones, intermixed with forest floor, blueberry and blackberry liqueur and spring flowers. It has a full-bodied, intense, concentrated mouthfeel that is every bit as majestic as the 1990, but possibly slightly fresher and more delineated. This great wine should drink well for another 40-50 years. |

WA 93 (2/1998): An explosively rich, exotic, fruity Montrose, the 1995 displays even more fat and extract than the 1996. There is less Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1995 blend, resulting in a fuller-bodied, more accessible and friendlier style. The wine exhibits an opaque black/ruby/purple color, as well as a ripe nose of black fruits, vanillin, and licorice. Powerful yet surprisingly accessible (the tannin is velvety and the acidity low), this terrific example of Montrose should be drinkable at a young age. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2028.
VM 91+ (6/1998): Excellent red-ruby color. Plum, currant, animal fur, smoked game, roasted nuts and graphite on the nose, plus a note of toffee. Lush and smooth in the mouth, with notes of minerals, leather and game. Still rather tightly wrapped following the mise, but very nicely balanced from the outset. Firm acidity gives the wine superb delineation and grip. Tannins are dusty and firm-and more obvious today than in the '97, despite the fact that the later year featured higher polyphenol levels. |

WA 95 (8/2014): This was a very strong year for the Medoc, as opposed to Graves and the Right Bank. The vintage has a very irregular reputation, but not so much for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape in the Medoc. Harvest occurred September 23 and finished October 6, a relatively short period, even at a large estate such as Montrose. The wine has sweeter tannins than the 1995, but doesn’t have quite the ripeness noticeable in 2003, 2005, 2009 and 2010. This wine is the classic, or more traditional style of Montrose, with dusty loamy soil notes intermixed with blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. Licorice, underbrush and floral notes were all present in this wine, which has good acidity and is not far from entering its plateau of full maturity. This was a year where Montrose used a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend – 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
VM 94 (5/1999): Full ruby-red. Deep aromas of smoky black cherry, black olive, minerals, cedar and game; I was reminded of a Montecristo No. 2. This really presents the full range of young Montrose aromas. Dense, sweet and layered; really reverberates on the palate. Very ripe on the aftertaste; subtle, complex flavors go on and on. Intensely flavored, bright and penetrating; as dense as the '99 but firmer, more obviously structured, and in need of a good decade of bottle aging. Firm tannins suffuse the palate. WA 90 (4/2001): A classic effort, the 1998 Montrose exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a sweet nose of jammy cassis, licorice, earth, and smoke. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannin. Given Montrose's tendency to shut down, it is performing better out of bottle than I expected. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. |

WA 99 (8/2014): Note: This was not in the tasting in Montrose, but I had it several times in Asia as well as recently from my own cellar. The grapes were harvested between September 11 and 26. The blend in 2003 was 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot (a very high percentage), 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine, unlike most 2003s, has a freshness and liveliness provided by their extraordinary terroir. This wine can be drunk now. It has a dense bluish/purple color to the rim and an extraordinary nose of blueberries and mulberries, with blacker cassis and blackberry entering the picture. Scorched earth, spice and licorice are all present in this magnificent, full-bodied, opulent wine that is very Montrose, very classic and somewhat atypical of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2040.
JS 97 (7/2013): After the 2009, this is the most exciting Montrose ever made, with intense aromas and flavors of plums, blueberries, spices, tobacco and cedar. It’s full-bodied with extremely refined tannins but a dense, delicious palate. Better in 2016, but why wait?
VM 96 (5/2005): Good medium-deep ruby-red. Superripe, roasted aromas of black raspberry, chocolate and licorice. Wonderfully dense, sweet and lush, with an early roundness rare for this wine. A monumental St. Estephe with almost confectionery sweetness. Wonderfully horizontal, palate-saturating wine with huge but thoroughly ripe, lush tannins. It's hard to believe that a wine this rich and deep could be carrying just 13.2% alcohol. The only thing missing here is the floral topnote of 2005, but that's a quibble in this baking-hot vintage, as Montrose's cooler, water-retentive clay-rich soil handled the extreme heat and drought as well as any chateau in the Bordeaux region. The final blend is 63% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 91 (6/2007): An impressive effort for the vintage, the 2004 Montrose possesses a deep ruby/purple-tinged color as well as a sweet nose of black fruits intermixed with notions of smoke, cold steel, earth, and subtle background wood. Notes of cassis, damp earth, violets, and graphite/lead pencil notes all flow to a beautifully pure, elegant and multi-dimensional 2015 that has fine, polished tannin, perfect balance, and a great finish. The 2015 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, all of which was brought up in 65% new oak. This isn’t a blockbuster yet is pure class all the way. It will be better in 4-5 years and keep for 2-3 decades.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, very well judged acidity, taut and linear with satisfying freshness and poise on the finish. Maybe this just has the edge over the Meyney. Superb. WA 98 (3/2020): Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and a 1% splash of Petit Verdot, the 2017 Montrose wine was run off into 60% new and 40% one-year old barrels where it was aged for 18 months. The grand vin represented 37% of the estate’s total production. Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose takes some time to unfurl before revealing an impressively flamboyant core of black cherry preserves, warm cassis and baked plums with hints of red currant jelly, dark chocolate, licorice, cardamom and chargrill plus a gentle waft of candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity with a very elegant, modest weight, featuring super-ripe, finely-grained tannins and tons of freshness to lift and show-off a stunning array of gorgeous black fruit and fragrant sparks, finishing very long and refined. This is an incredibly classy, poised and sophisticated Montrose!
JS 97 (12/2019): Extremely aromatic with currant, wild-herb and fresh-violet aromas. This is regal cabernet sauvignon at its finest. The palate has unwaveringly long and defined tannins that carry such fresh, piercingly pure, redcurrant and cassis flavors. A twin to the superb 2015? A blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
JD 95 (2/2020): Tasted on two separate occasions, the 2017 Chateau Montrose is a brilliant effort based on 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. This full-bodied, beautifully concentrated Saint-Estate offers classic Cabernet Sauvignon notes of creme de cassis, blueberries, crushed violets, and ample tobacco, with some underlying damp earth and spice notes developing with time in the glass. Balanced and beautifully textured on the palate, with both good acidity and building tannins, it reminds me of the 2012 with its classic style yet still has plenty of texture and ripe tannins. Give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 30 years or more.
VM 95 (2/2020): The 2017 Montrose was so impressive from barrel and now, bottled since July, it continues to put in a strong case for being one of the best Left Bank wines. It has a very pure and intoxicating bouquet with intense blackberry, light cassis, juniper and violet aromas, almost Margaux-like in terms of personality. Although there is a patina of new oak after bottling, it is in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip on the entry. Tightly wound at the moment but supremely well focused, this is a classic Montrose, "cool" and reserved, demonstrating impressive tension and precision towards the finish. It will require less time in bottle than the 2016 for example, so broach this superb Saint-Estèphe after five or six years and then it will give 25 to 30 years of drinking pleasure, and knowing Montrose, probably longer. JD 100 (3/2021): A full-bodied powerhouse as well as a perfect wine, the 2018 Château Montrose is a final blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 6% Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. Boasting a deep purple hue as well as awesome levels of crème de cassis and smoky blackberry fruits and notes of tobacco, lead pencil, scorched earth, and chocolate, it's deep, opulent, and incredibly concentrated on the palate, with no shortage of mid-palate depth, tannins, or length. It reminds me a little of a fresher version of the 2003, although there's more Cabernet Sauvignon in 2018 as well as less Merlot. It has that classic Montrose minerality and backward, mineral-laced style, yet I suspect this will be drinkable in just 5-6 years and should evolve into a modern-day legend from this terroir. WA 100 (12/2023): Surpassing the 2019 and rivaling the 2016 as this estate's finest vintage of the last few decades, the 2020 Montrose is a monument in the making. Wafting from the glass with aromas of violets, dark berries, licorice, loamy soil, black truffle and subtle spices, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, elegantly muscular profile, terrific purity and energy, beautifully powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. It checks in at 13.7% alcohol, the same as the superb 2009, but it is even deeper, more vibrant and more complex than the 2009.
JD 98+ (3/2023): The Grand Vin 2020 Château Montrose is brilliant and unquestionably in the lineup of the truly greats from this château, including the 1989, 1990, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2018, and 2019. With an IPT of 80 and a natural alcohol of 13.4%, its deep, saturated purple hue is followed by quintessential Saint-Estèphe notes of pure cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, acacia flowers, and loamy earth. Full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, it nevertheless stays incredibly pure, elegant, and seamless, with perfectly ripe tannins. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, is shines even today for its purity and balance, and it should be in the early stages of its prime drink window within a decade. VM 97 (11/2024): The 2020 Montrose has a gorgeous bouquet with black cherries, raspberry coulis, crushed stone and floral scents. It's quite decadent yet nicely controlled. The palate is very structured with layers of blackberry and bilberry fruit and a touch of white pepper, building toward a spicy and very persistent, almost burly finish. JD 97-100 (4/2024): Made from a strict selection of only the best terroirs (terrace 4) around the estate and the oldest vines, the 2023 Château Montrose is a more Cabernet Sauvignon-driven wine than normal and is based on 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc that will see 18 months in 60% new French oak. The result is a more plush, deep, opulent wine that has classic Montrose darker, almost blue fruits, violets, chocolate, and damp earth-like aromas and flavors. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and expansive on the palate, it has more richness, breadth, and concentration than just about every other wine in the vintage. The 2023 hit 13.5% natural alcohol with a pH of 3.7. It has some similarities to the 2010 (or 2016?) and might end up being the wine of the vintage.
VM 96-98 (4/2024): The 2023 Montrose is focused on the original terroir of the estate, known as Terrace 4, located in front of the river. It comprises 45 hectares, around 12 to 15 hectares less than previous vintages so as to capture the expression of Montrose classified in 1855. Picked from September 5 to 28 and matured in 60% new oak, this has a very intense and focused bouquet: pure black fruit with just a touch of strawberry, hints of violet petals developing in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins—very pure, with pitch-perfect acidity. This gains depth toward the finish but maintains a sense of linearity that ensures it is one of the vintage’s finest contributions from the Left Bank. Magnificent. Neal Martin.
WA 97-100 (4/2024): The 2023 Montrose is another brilliant wine from an estate that's now routinely among Bordeaux's very best, year in, year out. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, derived exclusively from the estate's historic core on the fourth terrace situated just in front of the château itself, it unwinds in the glass with aromas of cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of lilac, violet and pencil shavings. Full-bodied, deep and layered, with a textural attack that segues into a dense, multidimensional mid-palate framed by beautifully ripe tannins and lively acids, it concludes with a long, resonant finish. It will be worth a special effort to seek out.
JA 98 (4/2024): Gorgeously dark and vibrant fruit, with gunsmoke and campfire, concentrated cassis and blackberry pastille, grilled almond, saffron and pomegrante, luscious but measured, showing the inky character that seems to be at the heart of the best Cabernets of this vintage, with their ripe but not overly exuberant classicism. Organic conversion, to be certified 2025. The first vintage this 1st wine of Montrose is coming only from the section of the vineyard located on Terrace 4 of the Médoc gravel banks that line the Garonne river along the peninsula. Following soil studies from Pierre Becheler, this comprises 35% of the overall production in 2023, or 45ha of vines, and is the historic heart of the property. WA 90-92 (4/2019): Composed of 52% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, harvested from September 17 to October 5, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 La Dame de Montrose delivers a profound nose of baked plums, blackberry preserves and raisin cake with touches of dark chocolate, licorice, Chinese five spice and sandalwood. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, it fills the palate with ripe, generous fruit, backed by firm, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and spicy.
VM 90-92 (5/2019): The 2018 La Dame de Montrose is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Deep, textured and beautifully perfumed, La Dame has so much to offer. Dark red fruit, wild flowers, cedar, sweet tobacco and anise give La Dame striking aromatic presence to play off its rich, layered fruit. Powerful and very Saint-Estèphe in bearing, La Dame is gorgeous in 2018. I won't be surprised if the 2018 turns out even better than this note suggests. Antonio Galloni.
JD 92-94 (5/2019): Production was down substantially for Château Montrose, who has moved all to organic farming as of 2019. Starting with the second wine of this great estate, the 2018 La Dame De Montrose is a blend of 52% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit aged 12 months in 30% new French oak. Fabulous notes of black cherries, espresso, graphite, and earth all flow to a richly textured, fleshy yet structured second wine that has ample tannins, beautiful purity, and a great finish. It's going to benefit from short-term cellaring.
JS 95-96 (4/2019): Very dense center palate to the La Dame this year with purity of fruit and round, velvety tannins. Juicy, too. Sexy. Reminds me of the 1989 Montrose! |

JA 94 (10/2021): Depth and power through the mid palate, good quality tannins, this is classically restrained St Estèphe power, with savoury yet juicy black fruits. Living up to its potential En Primeur, one to look out for, and a strong 2nd wine that beats out many 1st wines in the vintage. If you liked the Dame de Montrose 2010, get on board with this.
VM 92 (2/2023): The 2019 La Dame de Montrose has an open, fresh and energetic nose with blackberry and cedar scents, joined by black pepper and graphite with time. You might describe it as a "strapping" bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with graphite-infused black fruit, pliant tannins, edgy with a persistent and satisfying finish. This is very promising and quite sophisticated - a Deuxième Vin that has improved since bottling. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Neal Martin.
JD 91 (4/2022): The 2019 La Dame De Montrose is another impressive second wine and certainly worth seeking out. Ripe darker cherries, currants, leafy herbs, tobacco, and a hint of classic Saint-Estèphe damp earth all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, with a silky, graceful texture, light tannins, and a great finish. It's everything a second wine should be and will evolve nicely for 10-12 years. |
