| BH 87 (4/2025): (from vineyards in Santenay, Marsannay and the lower portions of Volnay). This is unusually pretty for a Bourgogne with its array of ripe plum and violet scents. There is fine volume to the utterly delicious and solidly concentrated middle weight flavors that display impressive length on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale where the only nit is a touch of warmth. This is a quality Bourgogne and worth a look, especially for value. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 95 (4/2019): A gorgeously spicy nose features elegant red berry, Asian-style tea and a hint of violet aromas. The succulent and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors coat the palate with plenty of sap while delivering excellent length on the strikingly long finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This will need a few years to develop more overall depth but this should be seriously good when it finally reaches its apogee. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 90 (4/2021): There is noticeable volatile acidity to the overtly spicy melange of red berries and subtly exotic nuances. The sleeker and more intense big-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation that carries over to the naturally sweet, mineral laden and sneaky long finish. This needs to add depth though the underlying material very much appears to be present for that to occur. As I have observed many times in these pages, volatile acidity is something that all wines have, it’s the degree that matters and whether the nose would bother most people is hard to judge but it did me. Drink 2036+. |

BH 94 (4/2024): An exuberantly spicy and quite floral-suffused nose features notes of wild currant, cherry and a gamy hint. The super-sleek and even finer yet more powerful larger-bodied flavors display impressive power on the even more complex, balanced and highly persistent finale. This is a big wine yet the balance is such that it could be approached after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2034+. VM 93-95+ (1/2024): The 2022 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is an imposing young wine. A blast of blue fruit, lavender, licorice, gravel, crushed rock and menthol saturates the palate. This bruiser is going to need time to be at its best, but it is pretty impressive, even in the early going. Neal Martin. |

| BH 94 (4/2025): A beautifully layered, and more expressive, nose features notes of exotic tea and just cracked black pepper on the fresh blend of both red and black pinot fruit. There is markedly better mid-palate density to the bigger-bodied flavors that are supported by dense but fine tannins on the impressively persistent and well-balanced finale. This is lovely and quite classy as well. Drink 2035+. |

BH 93 (4/2011): (from a ~.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis). A very ripe nose offers up notes of plum, black pinot fruit, pungent earth and plenty of spice influence. There is a relatively refined mouth feel to the medium weight yet powerful flavors that possess Outstanding power and punch on the long, balanced and only moderately austere finish. This will need plenty of cellar time but should very much be worth the wait. Drink 2023+. VM 92-94 (2/2013): (from the Grand Maupertuis section of Clos-Vougeot, close to Grands-Echezeaux): Bright red-ruby. Wild aromas of black cherry, earth, pepper and flowers. Silky, rich and graceful, offering full ripeness and harmonious acidity. Most impressive today on the very long, perfumed finish, which features utterly fine-grained tannins and a suggestion of menthol. |

VM 91-94 (1/2015): (from the Grand Monpertuis section of the Clos, not far from Grands-Echezeaux; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Deep, bright red. Aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, licorice and wild herbs are lifted by a peppery topnote. Densely packed and gripping, communicating an exhilarating sugar/acid balance and a saline complexity to its black fruit flavors. At once powerful and elegant, this wine finishes with mouthdusting tannins and excellent breadth and energy. The inclusion of whole clusters has contributed freshness and length, notes Guillaume Boillot. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains 30% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It has a harmonious bouquet that is actually not a million miles away from the Chambertin in style (which can be taken as a complement.) The palate is medium-bodied with a candied, sweet anise-tinged entry, fine tannins and a sorbet-like finish. This is one of the best Clos Vougeot wines that I have tasted, although it will need 4 or 5 years in bottle. |

BH 93 (4/2016): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A ripe but restrained nose features notes of both red and dark berry fruit, earth, humus, smoke and exotic tea scents along with a background hint of oak toast. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. This beauty will require at least a decade to be at its best. Drink 2024+. VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2017): (100% vendange entier; the Boillots work these vines in Grand Maupertuis themselves): Saturated deep red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and rose petal communicate striking fruity lift for young Clos Vougeot. Very rich, sappy and deep, but but with no sign of overripeness and markedly different in style from the Côte de Beaune samples that preceded it in my tasting, partly due to its whole-cluster treatment. This distinctly fine-grained Clos Vougeot has clearly benefited from the weather conditions of 2015. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 94 (4/2019): (from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) A brooding deeply pitched and softly spicy nose reflects plenty of earth and sauvage characters to the dark berry aromas that are trimmed in soft wood nuances. There is excellent size, weight and power to the muscular flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the imposingly structured and youthfully austere finish that is sneaky long. This is a big 2017 that is supported by chewy but not really rustic tannins that make clear that at least some patience is advisable. Drink 2032+. |

WA 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is showing very well, soaring from the glass with aromas of wild berries, rose petals, violets, orange rind and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, with lively acids and a powdery but elegantly refined chassis of structuring tannins, concluding with a long and resonant finish. BH 92 (4/2020): ( from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) This plays right on the edge of volatile acidity with its nose of poached plum, black raspberry and warm earth. The middle weight flavors are not especially dense but do possess a highly attractive mouthfeel while displaying good power on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. This moderately firm effort is somewhat awkward at present, but I suspect that it will recover with age. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 93 (4/2021): (from a ~.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis). A brooding and restrained nose reluctantly offers up its aromas of red and dark currant, warm earth and a menthol hint. | BH 92 (4/2023): A moderately deeply pitched nose combines notes of black cherry and earth with those of violet and plum. There is fine mid-palate volume to the fleshy and palate coating flavors that possess focused power on the lingering finish that is neither especially austere nor robust in 2021. BH 93 (4/2024): ( from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis.) Drink 2034+.Hints of newly turned earth and the sauvage lurk in the background on the aromas poached plum and dark cherry. There is excellent volume to the beautifully textured middleweight plus flavors thanks to the abundant dry extract that serves to buffer the powerful, youthfully austere and beautifully balanced finish. VM 93-95 (1/2024): The 2022 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (Grand Maupertuis) is absolutely gorgeous. It marries all striking fruit purity with structure, all in a super stylish package. There’s plenty of tannin, but all the elements are very nicely balanced. Dark blue/purplish fruit, lavender, gravel crushed rocks and sage build into the driving finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 94 (4/2013): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Somewhat counterintuitively this possesses riper fruit with distinct sauvage notes to the humus and mineral-inflected, brooding and very cool wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent power to the driving and highly energetic, stony and robust flavors that display impressive mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in an austere, explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a serious wine but then again, isn’t Chambertin virtually always serious in its youth? Drink 2026+. VM 92-95 (2/2013): Good dark red. Very pure but reticent aromas of dark berries, mocha and sandalwood; smells creamy. Then lush and seamless in the mouth, but with great energy to the flavors of black cherry clafouti, dark chocolate, licorice and pepper. The explosive, slowly mounting finish features substantial fine-grained tannins and black fruit and pepper elements complicated by saline minerality. |

| BH 96 (4/2019): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South.) A spicy if decidedly inexpressive, pure and cool nose blends highly complex aromas of cassis, violet, lavender, earth and game. There is an overt muscularity and obvious power to the big-bodied and concentrated flavors that terminate in an austere, palate staining and wonderfully persistent finish that is very clearly structured for mid-term plus cellaring. In a word, terrific. Drink 2034+. |

WA 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, dark chocolate, rich loamy soil and creamy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, nicely concentrated and fine-boned, with a deep core of fruit, exquisitely refined tannins and a long, sweetly fruited finish. BH 92 (4/2020): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South.) Like the Clos de Vougeot, there is a very subtle trace of volatile acidity on the very spicy and distinctly ripe aromas of plum liqueur, cassis and warm earth scents. There is a high level of ripeness on the palate as well to the mocha-infused big-bodied flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the very firm if noticeably warm finale. I suspect that this will eventually come together though it's presently somewhat disjointed. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 91 (4/2021): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Like the Clos de Bèze, here too there is a whiff of volatile acidity though in this case it is decidedly more subtle though still perceptible on the more restrained and more floral cool red currant scents. The equally restrained and transparent large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a youthfully austere and markedly firm finale. I would make the same observation here as I did with the Bèze, which is to say it’s impossible to predict how VA will affect any given person’s perception of a wine but in this case, I was less bothered by it than with the Clos de Bèze. Deceptively medium in body, the 2022 is super-elegant right out of the gate. It’s a Chambertin of finesse rather than size. Blood orange, mint, rose petal spice and new leather lend aromatic nuance, all framed by the silkiest of tannins. What a gorgeous wine this is. Neal Martin |

| BH 94 (4/2025): (near the tree line at the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted in a North-South orientation). This is also beautifully layered and while not quite as spicy, it’s close though the fruit profile is derived more from plum and dark currant. The super-sleek and more mineral-driven flavors possess medium density and excellent underlying tension that gives the firm and youthfully austere finish real punch. Not surprisingly given that this is Chambertin, extended patience will be necessary. Drink 2035+. |

VM 93+ (3/2015): Bright medium red. Fresher and less roasted than the Chevrets, showing lovely mineral lift to the complex aromas of red cherry, iron, underbrush and spices; the Boillots benefited from the energy provided by the portion of their vines that are located in Rugiens du Haut. A sappy expression of soil on the palate, with red fruit, wild herb and white pepper flavors lifted and carried by a menthol quality. Finishes sappy and fresh, with firm tannins and strong soil character. A terrific showing, but built to age. BH 92 (4/2014): (From equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha). This is a notable step up in both aromatic elegance and complexity with its layered nose of plum, anise, violet and spice nuances. There is a wonderfully intense and refined mouth feel to the broad-shouldered and punchy medium weight flavors that are built on a base of firm minerality. I very much like the depth and length here and while there is still enough unabsorbed wood to notice on the beautifully persistent finish it should be completely integrated with a few years of bottle age. Good stuff. Drink 2022+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 93 (4/2016): (from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha.) A wonderfully elegant and slightly fresher nose is composed by notes of cool wild red berries, stone and intense floral aromas that are also trimmed in discreet wood. There is really lovely detail to the refined yet muscular and powerful medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of minerality on the firmly structured and youthfully austere finish. This is definitely going to need at least 7 to 8 years of cellaring and should easily reward 10 to 12. Drink 2024+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 91-93 (1/2016): (50% of the crop was lost to hail, but Volnay production in 2014 was down closer to 75%, according to Guillaume Boillot; half from Rugiens Hauts and half from Rugiens Bas; 50% new oak):Bright, dark, healthy red. Inviting iron-y perfume of redcurrant, red cherry, rust, spices, white pepper and minerals. Silky in texture and intense, communicating insinuating soil salinity to its red fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes with noble tannins and rising spicy length. For such a fine-grained wine, this boasts terrific thrust. WA 91 (1/2016): The 2014 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens has a fragrant bouquet, almost Volnay-like, gentle and caressing with scents of raspberry and cranberry, contained but pure. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, sappy red berry fruit here with a pleasing saline element towards the finish. There is very prudent use of new oak here and the wine really shows its terroir to good effect. Very fine. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): (in order to allow the seeds to ripen, Boillot waited until five days after he picked his Volnays to harvest this fruit on September 28, with 12.8% potential alcohol; 50% new oak): Moderately saturated bright medium red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits and menthol. Chalky and penetrating but youthfully tight, conveying a stronger impression of medicinal reserve than the Volnay Les Caillerets. A distinctly masculine, classic Pommard, juicy but imploded in the early going. The mounting finish features firm, mouth-saturating tannins, hints of spices and white pepper, and savory soil suggestions. The Boillots' holding is in Rugiens-Haut, on white soil and sand with relatively little iron content. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93+ (1/2020): The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens is the last time Boillot will produce this appellation, made from purchased grapes. Offering up aromas of dark berries, cassis, baking chocolate, candied peel and licorice, the wine is medium to full-bodied, muscular and chalky, with fine depth at the core, succulent acids and a long finish. BH 93 (4/2020): ( from equally sized parcels in both Rugiens Hauts and Bas that measure <1 ha.) A brooding and quite reserved nose grudgingly offers up pretty aromas of red and black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are cut with both spice and floral influences. There is a lovely sense of refinement to the intense and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors that brim with minerality on the powerful, serious and built-to-age finale. This too is well-worth searching out provided that you have the patience to let it slumber for at least 8 to 10 years first. Drink 2033+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 90 (3/2015): Bright, dark red. Sweet red berries, nutty oak and subtle soil tones on the nose. Fat, sweet and spicy, showing good fullness for village wine. Savory, serious Volnay with good vinosity and density and a saline complexity. Finishes with broad, building, ripe tannins and good savory persistence. Antonio Galloni. BH 88 (4/2014): (Entirely from 5 different 1ers). An earthy and distinctly ripe nose of cassis, plum and soft floral aromas gives way to equally earthy middle weight flavors where once again the supporting tannins are relatively fine-grained. The finale is firm without being rustic though there is enough youthful austerity to notice. This should reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2018+. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2014): Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off. Antonio Galloni. |

BH 91 (4/2016): A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe, pure and elegant aromas of spice and floral-inflected dark pinot fruit and plum scents. There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+. VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

BH 95 (6/2013): (one contiguous parcel measuring about .24 ha is spread evenly between Chassagne and Puligny.) There is just enough reduction present to suppress the nose though it seems reasonably clear that it is both ripe and clean. There is superb size, weight and mid-palate density to the mouth coating big-bodied flavors that ooze dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the firm acid spine on the very dry, even saline-infused finish. While I would call this a wine of finesse in the same vein as the Bienvenues, it is relatively fine in the context of the appellation. Either way, this delivers Outstanding quality though be aware that it's going to need plenty of cellar time. Drink 2021+. Don't miss! WA 94-96 (8/2012): Although obviously still an infant, the 2011 Batard- Montrachet is a wine of tremendous potential. There is gorgeous depth and richness in the fruit, but the minerality and sheer tension of the wine are only apparent on the finish. When I taste the Batard I think of a wine where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The 2011 is harmonious and flat-out gorgeous. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. VM 92-95 (9/2012): Very ripe aromas of apricot, peach and clove. Fat and very ripe but youthfully backward and not yet showing the complexity of the Bienvenue. Dry, rich and hard to taste today but stands out for its volume, richness and long, smoky aftertaste. Boillot's recently purchased Batard vines are right on the Puligny/Chassagne border. |

WA 94-96 (8/2012): The 2011 Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet is built on a fabric of exquisite textural finesse and elegance. The Bienvenues is a bit less overt in its bouquet than the Criots, but richer, deeper and more seamless in its fruit. Here, too, it is the wine’s sheer pedigree that stands out most. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. BH 94 (6/2013): This is also notably ripe but the aromas do not run to the exotic as the honeysuckle, apricot, white peach and subtle spice notes are entirely classic. There is an appealing succulence to the delicious, intense and strikingly fine medium-bodied flavors and while there is certainly a sense of focused power present on the long, clean and refined finish, this is essentially a Bienvenues of finesse. Drink 2021+. Don't miss! VM 92-95 (9/2012): Bright yellow. Vibrant nose combines smoke, honey and sexy minerality. More concentrated and sweet than the Criots but with the verve--not to mention the saline density--of Boillot's Pucelles. Lovely creamy old-viney texture and length. The minerally finish leaves the taste buds quivering. |

The gorgeously textured large-scaled flavors possess outstanding cut and minerality that contrasts with the exceptionally dry, austere and massively long finish. This strikingly pure effort is packed with potential but note well that it's not likely to be a wine that permits early accessibility. BH 95 (6/2017): (100% from Aloxe fruit in Le Charlemagne.) A cooler if slightly less complex nose offers up smoky aromas of green apple, white fruit and, once again, plenty of citrus elements. The powerful and dense flavors are blessed with so much dry extract that there is a borderline chewy texture; indeed this is almost tannic and it's clear that in contrast to so many 2015 whites, this is going to require extended cellaring. In short, this is a great Corton-Charlemagne.Drink 2027+. Don't miss! VM 93-95 (9/2016): Full yellow. Smoky minerality dominates the nose. Fat and sweet on entry, then juicy and penetrating but not austere in the middle, with the wine's thickness leavened by smoky silex minerality. A wine of Outstanding density and solidity, this grand cru really scrapes the palate clean on the chewy, very long back end. This one will need extended cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 96 (6/2018): (100% from Aloxe fruit in Le Charlemagne.) A distinctly smoky nose combines notes of mineral-reduction with those of green apples, lavender and spice. The super-intense and well-muscled flavors seem to be built on a firm base of minerality before culminating in an explosively long finish. Note well that like the Montrachet, this presently taciturn effort is very clearly built-to-age and is going to require a minimum of 7 to 8 years of cellaring first and reward far longer. Drink 2031+. VM 93-96 (9/2017): (75% new oak; 4.4 grams per liter acidity; from vines in Aloxe, which Boillot picked last in 2016 before starting on Pinot Noir): Bright light-medium yellow. Subtly complex, musky aromas of peach, caraway seed, nutmeg, mace and hazelnutty lees. At once densely packed and penetrating, with a stony citric pungency giving precision to the seamless middle palate and cutting through the wine's texture. Wonderfully pure and energetic for this cuvee, finishing tactile and unflagging, with terrific citrus lift. This has the palate-staining length and structure for a slow and graceful evolution in bottle; it's also the only 2016 here that struck me as tannic, but then classic Corton-Charlemagne typically shows structure more like a red wine. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 94 (6/2020): ( from both Pernand and Aloxe.) A ripe, cool and equally restrained nose offers up notes of green apple, floral, an array of citrus and, like the Chevalier, plenty of mineral reduction. There is excellent power and volume to the delicious yet entirely serious broad-shouldered flavors that possess both terrific cut and minerality, all wrapped in a clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. This isn't quite as dense or powerful as the Montrachet but even so, there is much to admire and note well that this too should age exceptionally well. Drink 2033+. WA 95 (1/2020): The most youthfully reserved wine in the cellar was the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru, a promising bottling that opens up to reveal scents of citrus zest, dried white flowers, green apple and pastry cream. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with racy acids and prodigious levels of searingly chalky dry extract that lend this wine incredible structure. |

BH 93 (6/2020): Once again there is a discreet whiff of exotic fruit to the white peach, spiced tea and dried yellow fruit aromas where a background hint of viognier creeps in. The caressing and unusually sleek medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and focused power on the caressing and refreshingly saline-inflected finish. This is particularly good in the context of a very hot and dry vintage which is not usually especially propitious for Criots. Drink 2028+. WA 94 (1/2020): Aromas of orange oil, honeycomb, ripe pears, wheat toast and paraffin wax introduce the 2018 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and textural wine that's fleshy and enveloping but underpinned by an impressively chalky structure that brings unusual tension and grip to this inherently generous terroir. |

BH 96 (6/2015): (from Puligny fruit in 2012 whereas prior vintages have been from Chassagne). An almost mute nose is comprised of highly complex aromas of citrus, pear, petrol, tea, green apple and floral characters. The full-bodied, dense and overtly muscular flavors are deep, dense and impressively scaled while displaying terrific power on the gorgeously long finish. In particular I like the palate staining dry extract, which should permit this to age well for at least a decade and more probably 12 to 15 years. Drink 2025+. Don't miss! VM 93-95 (10/2014): Pale, bright yellow. Vibrant aromas of orange zest, lime leaf, linden flower and crushed rock. Dense, thick and utterly seamless, but a bit heavier and less refined than the Chevalier-Montrachet. This big boy displays Outstanding depth of fruit and a slightly exotic soft citrus character. Incidentally, this wine is carrying a moderate 13% alcohol. Boillot has long maintained that alcohol is inversely proportional to energy, and that a white Burgundy at 14% is unlikely to have real vigor. WA 93-95 (12/2014): The 2013 Montrachet Grand Cru has a complex bouquet: subtle grilled walnut notes tincturing the mineral scents. It is reticent at first, but unfolds nicely in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with good weight, nicely judged acidity, plenty of mineral notes, although the finish is just a little conservative. Still, there is a pleasant saline note lingering on the aftertaste. Give this several years in bottle - it just needs to develop more "charm." |

BH 97 (6/2020): As good as the Chevalier is, and it's really good, this is arguably the most complex wine in the range with its mix of highly restrained and super-complex white orchard fruit, acacia blossom, citrus, spice, soft oak and jasmine tea aromas. The wonderfully seductive yet beautifully sleek large-scaled flavors bathe the palate in sappy dry extract while delivering superb length on the focused, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is a magnificent mineral-driven Montrachet and one of the best wines of the 2018 vintage. A genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2033+. WA 97 (1/2020): The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru is brilliant, unfurling in the glass with scents of ripe oranges, fresh pear, peach, buttered citrus, warm pastry and anise. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, textural and enveloping, with superb depth at the core, lively acids and an ineffable sense of completeness, concluding with a long and mineral finish. |

BH 89 (6/2024): A vague whiff of the exotic lurks in the background in the form of orange peel, pear compote and a hint of wet stone reduction. There is both excellent volume and density to the delicious middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced, clean and dry finale. This lovely effort could use better depth but the underlying material suggests that should be no problem if given a few years in a cool cellar. Drink 2029+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2024): The 2022 Meursault is a rich, opulent white. Lemon confit, marzipan, spice and crushed rocks are all amplified. Clean mineral notes extend the finish while also providing a counterpoint to all the textural richness. The Meursault is a blend of parcels (including En Luraule, Petits Charrons, Casse-Têtes, Les Pelles), all estate, high up on the slope. The 25% new oak is nicely judged. Neal Martin. |

BH 91 (6/2015): This is only slightly more complex aromatically than the straight Meursault with its nose of pear, various floral elements and gun flint hints. By contrast there is markedly more size, weight and power to the delicious, intense and mouth coating middle weight lus flavors that terminate in an impressively long finish that displays a hint of mandarin orange. This is not especially refined but I like both the balance and the style. Drink 2020+. Outstanding! VM 89-91 (10/2014): (around 50% new oak): Bright pale yellow. Ripe yellow fruits and almond on the slightly exotic nose. Fat, broad and full, with lovely fine-grained texture to the stone fruit and smoky oak flavors. Finishes dry, classic and long, with a lingering smoky quality. WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Meursault les Poruzots sees 40% new wood. It has a precision and detail on the nose that handles the new oak in its stride, candied orange peel emerging with aeration. The palate is well balanced, with a keen line of acidity, harmonious, with hints of pralines developing toward the finish. This is a Meursault with a bit of nascent chutzpah. |

| BH 92 (6/2021): There is a trace of matchstick character to the green fruit and compote-like white orchard fruit aromas. The sleek, delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess a caressing, but overtly powerful mouthfeel while delivering excellent length on the very rich and sappy finale. This needs more depth but as examples of Poruzots generally go, it is really quite sophisticated. Drink 2027+. |

BH 93 (6/2013): (from a parcel of <.33 ha) A beautifully complex and well-layered nose offers up aromas of ripe yellow orchard fruit, wood spice and herbal tea. There is an attractively textured feel to the opulent, concentrated and clearly very ripe medium weight plus flavors that possess good energy on the naturally sweet and mouth coating finish. This is lovely and the depth of material suggests that it should amply reward mid-term keeping. Drink 2018+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 92-94 (8/2012): The 2011 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes is weightless, gracious and impeccable. Soft, floral notes dominate, giving the wine much of its understated, polished personality. A bright, caressing finish rounds things out nicely in this open, approachable Puligny. Anticipated maturity: 2014+. VM 90+ (9/2013): Pale yellow-green. Cool aromas of lemon, lime, menthol and coriander. Solidly built but a bit youthfully angular, with brisk acidity giving a firm edge to the saline lemon and lime flavors. This very dry white Burgundy showed a somewhat silkier texture with 24 hours in the recorked bottle. Needs time. |

BH 92 (6/2020): (from a parcel of <.33 ha,). There is a discreet whiff of exotic fruit character to the white peach, apricot, petrol and acacia blossom aromas. The rich and solidly voluminous medium-bodied flavors possess very good mid-palate density, all wrapped in a clean, dry and refined finish that is sufficiently firm to reward at least a decade of cellaring. This could use a bit more overall depth, but it should have no trouble developing more with time in bottle. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! WA 93 (1/2020): The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes offers up aromas of orange oil, waxy citrus rind, fresh pear and white flowers, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping palate that's supple and succulent, underpinned by lively acids and concluding with chalky grip. As usual, this was the first parcel Boillot harvested in 2018. |

BH 95 (6/2024): An ethereal nose shyly presents its combination of the essence of pear, anise, pretty floral and a touch of mineral reduction. There is a wonderfully refined texture to the almost delicate medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the bright, strikingly long and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is class in a glass and another one to strongly consider. Drink 2030+. Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 1er Cru shows the more unctuous side of the village. Apricot, butter, spice and tropical notes all race out of the glass. The Combettes will be enjoyed most by readers who appreciate the more extroverted side of white Burgundy. This fruit came in on August 25 and was the first parcel harvested that year. Neal Martin. |

BH 93 (6/2024): Here too there is a subtle whiff of the exotic on the aromas of petrol, spice and a variety of floral elements. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the solidly concentrated and mineral driven flavors that feel alive on the palate before concluding in a bracing, balanced and bitter lemon-inflected finish. This is also lovely and worth considering plus it should drink well on the younger side if desired. Drink 2029+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! Value Value! VM 92-94 (1/2024): The 2022 Puligny-Montrachet Les Folatières 1er Cru is bright, tense and nicely focused. Lemon peel, mint, crushed rocks and white pepper lend notable energy to this wonderfully vibrant, sculpted Puligny. All the elements are so well balanced. Saline notes emerge in the glass, supporting the beautifully persistent finish nicely. This is so attractive. Neal Martin. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2022): There is a whiff of exotic spice sitting atop the ripe aromas of black raspberry coulis, violet, orange peel and Asian-style tea. The caressing but solidly energetic middle weight plus flavors manage to be at once elegant yet powerful before culminating in an equally austere, compact and beautifully well-balanced finale. This beauty of a Champans is also going to need at least 7 to 8 years of patience and should be more than capable of rewarding 12 to 15. Drink 2032+. |

VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru is very elegant on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, touches of damp loamy soil and just a very slight ferrous aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very focused and pure with just the right amount of acidity. Very harmonious, this is a gorgeous Clos des Forêts that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure (at least). Neal Martin. BH 91-93 (1/2022): 9from an enormous 7.1 ha monopole planted in the early 1950s.) Deep ruby. Markedly earthy aromas include notes of garrigue, poached plum, cassis and a smoky component. The rich, energetic and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors evidence solid muscle and power on the moderately rustic, balanced and complex finale. This beautifully long effort is a classic Nuits in style. Drink 2032+. Outstanding! |

| BH 95 (3/2022): (from both Chambolle and Morey fruit). A cool, pretty and quite floral-suffused nose speaks mostly of red currant, plum, earth and a hint of just sliced fennel. The sleek, tautly muscular and enveloping big-bodied flavors exude a lovely tension that is also present on the dusty, serious, very compact and clearly built-to-age finale. This excellent effort should amply repay extended cellaring. Drink 2035+. |

| BH 94 (3/2022): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Cool but very ripe aromas include notes of mocha, dark berry liqueur, earth and a hint of the sauvage. The sleek, intense and mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors manage to display both good richness and delineation on the more overtly austere, compact and sneaky long finale. This is definitely not a candidate for early drinking. Drink 2032+. |

VM 93-95 (12/2021): The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru had only finished its malolactic two weeks before my visit. Though I spent time with the sample from barrel, I think it was just a bit too soon to really get a reading on the nose. The palate is more expressive and harmonious: crunchy black cherry and blueberry fruit, fine structure, a touch of white pepper leaving the mouth tingling on the finish. Give this 4-6 years in bottle because there is a fine Charmes-Chambertin here. (Drink between 2026-2048) Neal Martin. BH 92-94 (1/2022): This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose. More interesting are the rich, vibrant and intense larger-scaled flavors that possess very good mid-palate concentration before terminating in an even firmer, powerful and impressively long quality. This also appears to offer very fine quality in a built-to-age package. (Drink starting 2035). |

| VM 96-98 (12/2021): The 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a powerful yet beguiling, elegant bouquet that offers layers of red cherry and blackberry fruit, the oak here seamless integrated, likewise the whole bunch. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, saturated tannins, the fleshy/puppy fat almost disguising the backbone present here. Very persistent on the finish, this is an excellent, luxurious and yet sophisticated Clos de la Roche. |

VM 94-96 (12/2021): The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very pure and quite precocious bouquet with black cherries, crushed violet and peony aromas, actually not unlike a Romanée-Saint-Vivant in style. Thet palate is succulent on the entry with candied orange peel infusing the mainly black fruit that merges into more red fruit towards the velvety finish. Quite gorgeous. (Drink between 2026-2048). Neal Martin. BH 92-94 (1/2022): A fresh and unusually expressive nose features notes of red and dark cherry, white pepper and a hint of kirsch. The delicious and intense middle weight flavors possess fine depth and persistence on the equally youthfully austere finale that is also sufficiently austere to easily repay 12+ years of cellaring. Fine quality here. (Drink starting 2032) |

| VM 94-96 (12/2021): The 2020 Echézeaux Grand Cru offers real intensity on the nose, quite powerful with pure dark cherries, cassis, crushed violet and blood orange. Stylistically, this is not unlike Thomas Collardot’s good friend, Sébastien Cathiard’s in style. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, veins of blood orange and a pinch of sea salt. Lovely structure and focus on the finish. Excellent - this is an Echézeaux from the top drawer. Neal Martin. |

| VM 94 (5/2022): The 2020 Beaune Clos des Mouches 1er Cru, which comes from deeper soils than the Beaune Grèves, has a mixture of red and black fruit and is a touch more expressive with a discrete marine influence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, very layered with a gentle but insistent grip on the finish. This is one of the finest Clos des Mouches that I have tasted. Neal Martin. |

| BH 91 (4/2022): Here too there is just enough wood present to remark upon framing the overtly floral-suffused aromas of spicy and ripe dark berries. There is both excellent drive and delineation to the rich, sappy and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that conclude in a dusty, balanced and moderately austere finish. Like several wines in the range, this too will need to develop more depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 89-91 (1/2022): This is also agreeably ripe and fresh with plenty of floral and earth elements on the mix of red and dark currant scents. The bigger and richer medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and mid-palate density before culminating in a firm, mildly rustic and well-balanced if compact finale. This is a very good Gevrey villages that is worth considering. (Drink starting 2027). |

| BH 92 (1/2023): Discreet wood influence sets off ripe and very fresh aromas of black cherry, spice, violet and a whiff of the sauvage. The succulent and notably denser medium weight plus flavors flash focused power on the youthfully austere, firm and balanced finale. As it usually does, this fine effort boxes well above its weight. Excellent quality here but again, patience strongly suggested. |

| VM 88-90 (12/2021): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Herbues, which was due to be bottled within several weeks, has a delightful bouquet with red cherries and crushed strawberry scents. The palate is a little reduced on the entry, fleshy with a bit of wood on the finish that will be subsumed with time. Drink between 2024-2034. Neal Martin. |

VM 89-91 (12/2021): The 2020 Gevrey-Chamerbtin Vieilles Vignes offers a mixture of red and black fruit laced with blood orange and quince, nicely focused with a sense of energy developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. Fine acidity, just slightly confit-like towards the finish that erodes a little of the precision compared to other cuvees, though there is satisgfying length. (Drink between 2025-2040). Neal Martin. BH 88-90 (1/2022): Ripe and nicely layered aromas are comprised by notes of poached plum, warm earth and a whisper of the sauvage. The juicy and fleshy medium weight flavors possess both good volume and verve before terminating in a mildly rustic and warm finale. (Drink starting 2027). |

| BH 88-90 (1/2022): A mentholated top note is present on the markedly ripe aromas of cassis, earth and bitter chocolate. The rich, velvet-textured and concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess pretty good verve and length on the slightly warm finale. This will need to develop better depth to merit the upper-end of my projected range. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2022): Very ripe yet still reasonably fresh aromas are comprised by notes of roasted plum, black cherry, cassis and earth. The dense, powerful and muscular broad-shouldered flavors are supported by a very firm tannic spine on the robust, serious and very compact finale. This is quite impressive though certainly not typical. Drink 2035+. |

| WA 91 (1/2022): From a small new supplier of fruit who is working organically and adopting many of Lachaux's viticultural methods comes the 2020 Nuits-Saint-Georges La Petite Charmotte, a medium to full-bodied, lively and concentrated wine evocative of plums, red berries, rose petals and cherries. Powdery tannins frame its deep core of fruit. |

| BH 86-89 (4/2022): A peppery and earthy nose features mostly ripe red berry scents. The nicely textured and delicious middle weight flavors possess unusually good depth and persistence in the context of what is typical for the genre. Worth considering. Drink starting 2024. |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees |

|
| |
VM 95-97 (12/2021): The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru was showing a little reduction when I tasted it from barrel, so the nose was difficult to read. The palate is stunning though: fine tannins, intense red fruit, thrilling tension with a gradual build to a poised finish. Outstanding, but it will need time. (Drink between 2027-2055). Neal Martin. BH 91-93 (1/2022): More elegant and cooler aromas are comprised by notes of violet, lavender, anise, red cherry coulis and dark currant. The lilting but impressively intense middle weight flavors possess plenty of minerality on the youthfully austere, focused and beautifully long finale. This less firmly structured effort will also need to develop better depth but it's already extremely pretty and satisfying. (Drink starting 2028). |

BH 93 (1/2023): An exceptionally pretty, indeed even perfumed, nose reflects aromas of dark currant, poached plum, newly turned earth and subtle anise hints. The refined and intense flavors possess good if not special density along with a beguiling sense of underlying tension that carries over to the dusty, youthfully austere, compact and lingering finish. This is unusually powerful, if a bit less refined, compared to its usual understated character and overall, it is really quite impressive. VM 89 (1/2023): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru has a lovely dark plummy bouquet, kirsch and a touch of liquorice, perhaps a little sur-maturité. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, black cherries, hints of peppermint with a cassis finish. Maybe this just doesn't quite deliver the persistency that I anticipated when I tasted this from barrel. Neal Martin. |

| VM 90 (5/2022): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Aux Boudots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet with dark cherry and cassis fruit, pressed violets coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, ripe red fruit, good depth, Vosne-like with touches of dark chocolate and tobacco on the finish. Give this chap two or three years in bottle. Neal Martin. |

| VM 90 (5/2022): The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has an exotic bouquet with hints of prune filtering through the red cherry and cassis notes. Very opulent. The palate is rounded and caressing, plush and quite decadent. The 40-50% new oak is nicely integrated, though I would like to see more precision on the finish. Neal Martin. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2022): This also very ripe yet avoids being over the top with its liqueur-like aromatic profile of spiced black cherry, cassis and sauvage hints. There is both excellent volume and freshness to the dense and, somewhat unusually, more refined medium weight flavors that tighten up on the youthfully austere, complex and lingering finale. |

VM 95-97 (12/2021): The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru is curiously much less expressive on the nose than the Clos des Argillières despite coaxing. Finally, after I am already bloody late for my next appointment, it unfolds with wonderful mineral-rich blue fruit. The palate is clean and very precise, extremely focused, the oak seamlessly integrated and it fans out in splendid fashion on the lightly spiced fashion. About as good as Nuits Saint-Georges you can find. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (1/2022): (a .93 ha monopole of the domaine.) A ripe but cool and pure nose is comprised by notes of black raspberry liqueur, anise, violet, wood spice and a hint of the sauvage. The suave and palate drenching flavors possess both good energy and minerality before culminating in dusty, youthfully austere and firm finish. This attractive if compact effort is also going to need at least a modicum of patience. |

BH 87-89 (1/2022): Once again, the nose is very ripe yet manages to retain reasonable freshness on the aromas black raspberry coulis, cassis and plenty of Savigny style earth. The rich, suave and mouth coating flavors possess fine mid-palate density while delivering solid length on the rustic finale. This too is impressive in its fashion but it's certainly not typical. (Drink starting 2024). VM 86-88 (12/2021): The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Village had a bit too much VA on the nose for me and rather smudged the definition, the cassis and black cherry fruit. The palate was likewise a little too candied and rich, the Les Lavières that followed showing much more precision and terroir expression. A quasi-Syrah-like finish. I admit to being flummoxed by this cuvée from barrel. Neal Martin. |

| BH 99 (1/2022): A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially. Drink 2050+. |

| BH 95-98 (1/2022): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay.) As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it's less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. Drink 2040+. Don't miss! |

| BH 89-91 (4/2017): (this is actually a premier cru but it is not declared as such.) A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required. Drink 2025+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| BH 89-92 (4/2019): A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of plum, dark currant, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. Once again there is excellent intensity to the racy but muscular and robust flavors that deliver fine length on the more firmly structured and mildly rustic finish. This too is going to need at least a few years of cellaring to become more civilized as it's tightly wound today. Drink 2027+. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2019): A perfumed and borderline exotic nose speaks of elegant and very pretty aromas of red currant, plum and dark cherry. The seductively textured medium-bodied flavors also exude evident minerality on the focused, intense and moderately austere finale that makes clear that this is going to need a few years to become more pliant and user-friendly. | VM 89-91 (4/2007): Good deep red. Perfumed nose combines black raspberry, violet and minerals. Dense, sweet and layered, with a chocolatey superripeness to the dark fruit flavors. Quite broad and sensual in the middle palate. Finishes with big, ripe tannins. This is 13.8% alcohol. |

WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets has a more limestone-scented bouquet, the fruit a little redder than that of Fremiets, opening with wilted rose-petal scents infusing the strawberry and red currant aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a little more flesh than the aforementioned premier cru, but maintaining appreciable balance and minerality that is neatly assimilated on the sappy finish. This should blossom once in bottle. There is class here. VM 90+ (3/2016): Good full red. Deep, ripe aromas of dark fruits and spices show a medicinal reserve. Densely packed and concentrated, with strong acidity contributing to a very primary, clenched quality in the early going despite the wine's solid ripeness. Finishes saline and firmly tannic but not dry. This cuvee is often the supplest and tastiest in the cellar at this stage but not this year. Less fruity than the 2014 but tactile and quite long on the aftertaste. Strong acidity should keep this wine young for a long time. Stephen Tanzer. WS 90 (5/2016): The cherry, currant and strawberry notes are matched by a firm, bracing structure in this red. Features fine weight and balance, remaining vibrant and long, with a mineral accent. Best from 2018 through 2028. 21 cases imported. BH 90-92 (4/2015): (from two parcels measuring .65 ha.) Reduction once again dominates the fruit. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is notably finer than that of the Fremiets with the same minerality and punch, all wrapped in a focused and lingering finish that also is ever-so-mildly warm and austere. In the same fashion the balance isn't quite perfect, but this is still very attractive. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A softly spiced nose grudgingly reveals wafting and perfumed aromas of plum liqueur, violet and a hint of sandalwood. The medium weight flavors are not quite as dense as those of the Frémiets but they're finer still with plenty of the hallmark minerality suffusing the classy and impeccably well-balanced finale. This Zen-like effort should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years of cellaring if that's your preference. |

BH 94 (4/2012): An incredibly complex, fresh and seductively perfumed nose offers up a wonderfully layered set of ripe red berry fruit, cassis, mineral and spice aromas that introduce sappy and lacy yet serious middle weight flavors that possess both excellent power and fine volume, all wrapped in a magnificently long finish. The tannins are quite firm yet they’re also well-integrated as the abundant dry extract pushes them to the background. In a word, sensational. Drink 2021+. WA 93-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Volnay Champans is frankly in another class. VM 91-94 (2/2011): Bright, deep red. High-pitched, floral aromas of cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and wild herbs. Enters the mouth sweet, but bright acidity, peppery lift and a saline element give this premier cru a rather serious middle. Really saturates the palate on the back end, finishing with repeating notes of pepper, salty minerality and terrific lingering perfume. |

| BH 94 (4/2013): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Initially there is a touch of reduction though aggressive swirling liberates the admirably pure, fresh and elegant nose of a plenitude of floral notes along with a ripe mix of red berries and iron, stone and earth hints. There is good power and excellent complexity to the wonderfully well-delineated medium weight flavors that possess fine phenolic ripeness and superb energy on the focused, linear and stunningly long and saline-infused finish. This is a seriously impressive effort that is built to age. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

WS 93 (5/2016): Black cherry, raspberry and pepper flavors mark this vibrant red, holding back for now, but showing a sense of the depth and saturated fruit. The finish is firm and chalky, but this will open up with air and time. Best from 2019 through 2032. 100 cases imported. VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent. BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 92 (3/2017): Full red. Aromas of dark cherry, smoky minerals and sexy soil tones. Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage. WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment). BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 89-91 (4/2015): The 2013 Volnay Clos des Angles is quite powerful and intense for the year. Spice, new leather, menthol and tobacco wrap around a core of dark fruit. Hints of reduction are present today that mask some of the fruit. Nevertheless, the 2013 offers good potential and may turn out to be even better than this note suggests. Antonio Galloni. BH 89-91 (4/2015): Here too there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background but like the Volnay "1er" there is good freshness and ample punch to the delineated and delicious middle weight flavors. Here though there is a bit more concentration present on the lightly mineral-inflected, dusty and slightly austere finish. Drink 2020+. WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Angles was showing just a touch of reduction when I tasted it. Underneath is some undergrowth, mulch-like scents infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins. There is moderate weight in the mouth with a more assertive blackberry and raspberry finish. Fine. |

WS 93 (12/2010): A beauty, from its haunting aromas of wild cherry, berry, floral and spice to the silky texture and lingering aftertaste. There's a sinewy feel on the finish, ending on sweet fruit and spice notes. Drink now through 2023. 140 cases imported. BH 92-95 (4/2009): This too is mildly reduced, making the nose difficult to accurately read though the lacy, pure and laser-like precision and focus of the medium weight flavors is nothing short of remarkable and here the emphasis on a base of stone is perhaps even more pronounced than in the Taillepieds, all wrapped in a harmonious, understated yet driving finish that does not seem to stop for several minutes. This is a not a big Ducster but for purity of delivery, it's hard to beat and the balance is impeccable. Don't miss! Outstanding! Drink: 2017+ VM 92 (4/2010): Medium red. Darker aromas of black cherry and spices. Dense and spicy on the palate; fuller and sweeter than the Taillepieds but also quite fresh and built to age. This is still a bit stunted from the mise but the substantial dusty tannins display lovely sweetness. Aeration brought impressive early complexity. WA 91 (6/2010): The d’Angerville’s 2007 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is far more concentrated and youthful in aspect than its Champans counterpart, with blackberry, cherry pit, black tea, crushed stone, and iodine combining with relative firmness of texture, but with compensatory richness of beef marrow adding to its darkly-hued, bitter-edged, somber complexity. I suspect that this palate-staining Volnay will keep longer than most of its ilk in this vintage, perhaps 8-10 years. |

BH 94 (4/2012): A superbly fresh and beautifully layered nose of cool red berry fruit, floral notes and wet stone, the latter of which is present in abundance on the rich yet beautifully detailed middle weight flavors brimming with minerality and energy, all wrapped in a focused, linear and precise finish of huge length, which remains at present youthfully austere. A classic Ducster that will require 10 to 12 years to be at its peak and readers should note that unlike some '08s, this will not be especially approachable young. Drink 2020+. VM 93+ (3/2011): Bright medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, cherry, minerals and spices. Lush and silky in the mouth but with terrific energy and a weightless character to the flavors of red fruits, spices and flowers. This round but very young wine has a terrific spine for development in bottle. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins and noteworthy vibrancy. Has the most dimension of this set of 2008s. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (4/2014): Palish bright red. Highly perfumed nose combines redcurrant, cherry, smoky minerals and faded flowers, complicated by earth and caramel nuances. Taut and juicy in the mouth, with a tightly coiled spring of pungent minerality energizing the youthful flavors of ripe cherry, redcurrant, smoke and spices. Much less creamy than the Champans, with a saline calcaire element giving the mid-palate uncanny detail. Finishes sweet, subtle and long, with utterly seamless, fine-grained tannins. With its firm tannins and strong minerality, this should make a great dinner companion--but give it at least six or seven years in the cellar. BH 91 (4/2014): An incredibly perfumed, airy and cool nose speaks of anise, essence of red berry fruit, stone and floral hints. There is a distinctly textured mouth feel to the restrained and beautifully well-detailed and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess a highly refreshing mouth feel, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, restrained and delicious finish. A lovely and very understated effort that should also reward mid-term cellaring. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! WA 91 (12/2013): The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has an accomplished, sophisticated, mineral-driven bouquet that echoes the nascent 2012. The palate is crisp and a little leafy on the entry, something just slightly autumnal about it. The tannins are firm and just a touch austere, but they are neatly embroidered into the black fruit profile. The finish exerts a pleasant grip and it lingers long in the mouth. This is a classy wine hemmed in by an average growing season. These 2011s were all tasted with Guillaume d'Angerville at the domaine in Volnay. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Healthy dark red. Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. Stephen Tanzer. WS 93 (5/2016): This red offers well-defined cherry, currant and spice flavors, supported by vibrant acidity. Saturated with pure, ripe cherry fruit midpalate, this firms up, yet remains balanced and mouthwatering on the long finish, showing spice and chalk accents. Best from 2018 through 2030. 95 cases imported. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar. BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

All about perfume today, and a bit dry on the back end. A second bottle showed a similar nose, but with some darker fruits emerging with air. It also offered considerably more mid-palate pliancy of texture as well as more stuffing to buffer its tannins. The finish is quite fresh, with nicely integrated acidity. My score, needless to say, is for the second bottle. BH 90-93 (4/2013): (from a 1.57 ha parcel) This is also quite beguilingly perfumed with an ultra-high-toned nose of pure essence of red pinot fruit that reveals plenty of wet stone character. There is a palpable sense of underlying tension as this is particularly vibrant and this sensation is enhanced by the intense salinity that pervades both the mid-palate as well as the impressively persistent and mouth coating finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort displays the inherent muscularity of a fine Fremiets and will need at least a decade to arrive at its apogee. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! VM 90-93 (2/2013): Bright medium red. Precise, high-pitched aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry and chalky minerality. Juicy, vibrant and pure, delivering impressive intensity without any obvious weight. Terrific mineral cut and a firm acid/tannin spine should keep this beauty youthful for many years. Offers Outstanding verve for the vintage. |

WS 93 (5/2016): Aromas and flavors of black pepper highlight the black cherry and black currant fruit in this beautifully integrated red. Firms up, yet remains long and spicy on the fresh aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2030. 30 cases imported. WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet has a very seductive, effortless bouquet that unfolds in the glass with raspberry, wild strawberry and a distant scent of pine cones that is beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle but insistent grip. There is an abiding sense of symmetry here with very good length in the mouth. Tightly coiled at the moment, it will repay four or five years in bottle. This is a refined Volnay. BH 90-92 (4/2015): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) There are hints of tea and violets to the dark currant liqueur-like aromas. There is an excellent sense of energy to the overtly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that possess a dusty texture on the ever-so-slightly warm and austere finish. At present this is not perfectly well-balanced but I suspect that this will harmonize with 7 to 10 years of cellaring. Drink 2021+. VM 90-92 (4/2015): The 2013 Volnay Fremiets is one of the more floral, mid-weight wines in this lineup. Cherry pit, crushed flowers mint and white pepper all take shape in the glass. A bit more pliant on the mid-palate than the aromatic suggests, the Fremiets is another wine where balance rules the day. Distinct stony and saline notes add the final layers of nuance. Antonio Galloni. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2017): A notably ripe nose stops just short of surmaturité while displaying notes of plum, black cherry, earth and a pretty lashing of spice elements. There is a bit more size, weight and mid-palate stuffing to the velvety and palate soaking flavors that are shaped by a markedly firm tannic spine on the gorgeously persistent finale where the only nit is a barely discernible hint of warmth. Lovely but once again, patience required. Drink 2030+. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2018): Bright medium ruby. Brooding aromas of black cherry, blueberry and violet. Dense, sappy Volnay with compelling sweetness to its dark berry fruit. Finishes with dusty, broad tannins and good saline lift. The estate lost 25% of this parcel to frost, but Guillaume d'Angerville told me that the ultimate crop was actually larger than he thought it would be during the summer. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2019): A slightly more deeply pitched nose displays an evident spiciness to the plum, dark raspberry and violet-scented aromas. The highly energetic and intense medium weight flavors offer even more minerality on the well-detailed flavors that possess more depth and a bit more length as well on the firmer finish. This is very Frémiets in character and a wine that should amply reward extended keeping. Drink 2029+. |
