Niederhauser Hermannshohle Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel (375 ML) |
$45 |

|
| |
| VM 95 (6/2020): Like its Brücke counterpart, this Auslese reflects genuinely botrytis-free grapes, said Dönnhoff, but ones that were too numerous and too high in sugar to use elsewhere, “and certainly not in the Grosses Gewächs, which would then have ended up with 14% alcohol.” Sea breeze on the nose intimates the sweet-saline savor of raw scallop that emerges on this wine’s lusciously lingering, mouthwateringly umami-rich finish. White peach and quince preserves feature throughout, reinforced on the soothingly creamy palate by nougat-like nut essences. There is an animating, juicy fresh-fruit aspect as well, and a wonderful sense of both focus and transparency to stony and ore-like nuances. (Drink between 2020-2050). Dvid Schildknecht. |

Niederhauser Klamm Riesling Kabinett |
$35 |

|
| |
| VM 93 (6/2020): “I had a tiny share of Klamm for many years,” noted Dönnhoff, but it went into our Gutsriesling.” After acquiring a second parcel, he replanted it, and those vines have only been in production for a few years. Then an old-vines holding in this estimable Einzellage was acquired from Luisa von Racknitz, at which point, in 2017, a significant share of Klamm fruit was shunted into Dönnhoff’s off-dry Gutsriesling. Now, for the first time, the Dönnhoffs have essayed a dedicated bottling. Nut extracts and pit-inflected white peach make for a bittersweet cast, while the richness and succulence of fruit displayed on a buoyant, silken palate is enlivened by a squeeze of fresh lime. Smoky, stony and mouthwateringly saline nuances delightfully complicate the luscious, seductively sustained finish of this delectable gem. What an auspicious debut! (Drink between 2020-2032). David Schildknecht. |

| |
| WA 91 (7/2020): On a forceful nose and waxy palate, apple and grapefruit are garlanded in pungent, shrubby herbs as well as piquantly marked by their peels and seeds. A glossy feel and an underlying sense of midpalate density are combined with a relatively opaque overall impression when compared with the most expressive wines in the present collection. But the finish is invigoratingly zesty, satisfyingly refreshing and impressively gripping, if not (for now, at least) notably transparent to nuance. This originates from the same old, ungrafted vines in the Zuckerberg sector that supplied 2017’s A.P. #4, though in this instance additional juice was provided by another nearby parcel. I may well have a blind spot to the virtues emanating from this fruit, because – without my having had time to think about this while I was tasting – for the second vintage running, my assessment falls far short of the Webers’ (or that of some other critics as well), who consider this one of their finest wines of the vintage. (Drink between 2020-2032). David Schildknecht. |

WA 92+ (8/2019): The 2018 Scharzhofberger Kabinett (AP #2) is brilliant, clear and coolish on the nose, with cold, wet and clayey yet also crunchy slate aromas and bright fruit. Lush and precise, with lingering salinity and mineral expression, this is a complex and structured Scharzhofberger Kabinett with great aging potential. Tasted in June 2019. VM 92 (7/2020): White currant and white peach are pungently wreathed in green herbs for stimulating aromatic display, and are joined on a firm palate by incisive, invigorating nips of cress and radish. The finish is mouth-shaking in its bright conveyance of energy, not to mention consummately refreshing and implacably stony. David Schildknecht. |

| WA 93 (10/2020): The 2018 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett offers a deep and flinty, stony and herbal bouquet that needs some time to open up. Remarkably deep and complex, round and textured on the palate, this is a charming, mouth-filling and intense WSU with serious grip and length. Still far from being evolved, this is a richer, more complex Kabinett that will start to impress in 5-10 years. Stimulatingly salty on the finish. Tasted at the domain in September 2020. |

JS 99 (9/2019): Very pure slate here, this is something unique. The elevated, steep and stony site has such strength of character, delivered with such purity. Gun smoke, gunflint and very fine fragrance with a streak of fresh lemons. So fine. The palate has a super fine and elegant feel, floating ballet-like over the palate. Such elegance and power. The finesse and length is really ethereal. Yellow-grapefruit juice and pith here. Wildly succulent at the long, salty finish. What a thrilling wine. Drink or hold. WA 97 (10/2019): Bright and clear fruit aromas intermix with flint stone and herbal aromas to open the spectacularly deep, dense and coolish, extremely mineral 2018 Felseneck Riesling GG. Very intense, rich and concentrated on the silky-textured and refreshing palate, this is a crystalline and silky yet dense and enormously mineral, tightly woven, dry and piquant Riesling with remarkable tannin structure and sustainable salinity. This Felseneck needs years to open up and also the biggest glass you can find. Tasted during the VDP Grosse Lage preview in Wiesbaden in August and two times at home in October 2019. VM 96 (6/2020): Zesty lime and struck flint pungency are joined on the nose by intimations of white currant and white peach as well as of alkaline, saline sea breeze. The midpalate is firm but polished, dense and full (at around 13% alcohol), yet exhibits an improbable sense of lift, with crunchy, taut-fruit freshness and cheek-pinching brightness such as one seldom witnesses from this vintage. The superbly focused, preternaturally persistent finish is vibrantly tongue-tingling, crushed-stone-saturated, mouthwateringly saline and refreshingly loaded with primary juiciness. Yet for all of the brightness on display here, there are also resonant, deep, piquant nuttiness and a low-toned stoniness suggestive of tectonic tension. “Based on my impressions in autumn [2018],” said Fröhlich – lovely though he claimed the harvest was – “you could never have gotten me to believe that we would end up with a wine like this.” And talk about the scarcely believable: Fröhlich left out of this cuvee a roughly thousand-bottle lot of Felseneck that was due to spend a second winter in cask, and which he thinks represents his finest dry wine of the vintage. Like its Stromberg counterpart but to an even more striking degree, this bottling illustrates a point on which I elaborated when introducing the Schäfer-Fröhlich 2017s – namely, that Bockenau’s top slopes take a back seat to none on the Nahe.David Schildknecht. |

Berardenga Chianti Clasico Gran Selezione Colonia (1.5 L) |
$350 |

|
| |
| VM 95 (1/2018): Volume, power and breadth are the signatures of the 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia. This is the first vintage in which Colonia falls in line with the rest of the Fèlsina range from a stylistic standpoint. Among other things, the use of French oak is much more measured than it was in Colonia's first vintages. Next to the flagship Rancia, Colonia is a sleeker, and perhaps a bit more polished, although it doesn't quite offer the same direct expression of Sangiovese. Antonio Galloni. |

Berardenga Chianti Clasico Gran Selezione Colonia |
$119 |

|
| |
| VM 96 (2/2019): The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is the richest and most overt of Fèlsina's three top Sangioveses (the other two being Rancia and Fontalloro). Dark and explosive in the glass, the 2015 Colonia possesses layers of super-ripe dense fruit to match its decidedly virile, muscular personality. As always, Colonia has a stronger French oak imprint than the other wines in the range, but the oak is better balanced today than it was in the first few years. The 2015 is an impressive Colonia. (Drink between 2025-2045). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 95 (6/2008): I have tasted Felsina’s 2004 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia on at least three separate occasions and have never been anything less than deeply impressed. This is a serious Chianti endowed with endless layers of sweet dark cherries, smoke, minerals, flowers and sweet toasted oak. With air the layers fill out, revealing an expansive, richly-textured wine of pure breed. At times the wine has been incredibly primary and brooding, while at other times it has shown the sheer power it holds in reserve. This is a great effort from Felsina. Simply put, it is a wine fit for kings and queens. Rancia also happens to be one of the finest values in wine today. Needless to say, it is highly recommended. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024. VM 95 (8/2007): Impressive dark ruby color. Expressive aromas of blackcurrant, plum, mint and cigar box, all lifted by a mineral element. Dense and rich, combining pinot noir-like texture and refinement with syrah-like flavors of rare meat and raspberry liqueur. This boasts a wonderfully tactile feel and a remarkably long, palate-staining finish. A great Chianti with loads of personality. |

WA 94 (10/2010): The 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia bursts onto the palate in a big, brooding expression of Sangiovese from Castelnuovo Berardenga. Muscular and dense to the core, the 2007 powers all the way through to the long finish. Hints of smoke, tar, leather and scorched earth emerge over time, but only with great reluctance. In a vintage where so many wines are open, the Rancia comes across as quite stubborn and in need of at least five more years in bottle. That said, it is a standout, not to mention one of the greatest values in fine, age-worthy wine. In a second tasting the 2007 Rancia came across as decidedly more elegant and restrained in style, so it will be interesting to see where this ultimately settles within the context of recent vintages. Today I don’t think the 2007 has the elegance of the 2004 nor the power and ageworthiness of the 2006, but we will see. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. VM 92 (8/2010): (100% sangiovese; 14% alcohol) Dark red. Fresh red cherry, bay leaf and underbrush aromas are complemented by a strong mineral nuance. Starts silky, then turns minerally, brisk and firm in the middle, showing a penetrating quality to the red cherry, ripe plum and delicate herbal flavors. Finishes seamless and very long, but I found this to be a somewhat more backward, imploded example of Rancia than usual. |

VM 97 (9/2021): The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia is an absolutely stunning wine. The archetype of Rancia in the past has been of a big, potent Chianti Classico but in 2018, Rancia is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse. Silky, perfumed and indescribably finessed, the 2018 dazzles from start to finish. It's a magical wine in every way. Antonio Galloni. WA 95 (10/2021): The 2018 is an unusual vintage that shows an especially austere character. Off the bat, it must be said that the Fèlsina 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia would certainly benefit from more cellar time and a long drinking window. The Rancia is elegant and streamlined with a medium-bodied style that breaks from some of the more concentrated vintages we've seen in the past. The bouquet reveals a lot of dark or black character with blackcurrant, tar, resin, iron ore and a dusty hint of dry graham cracker (which reminds us of the vintage heat). Structurally, the wine offers a solid and firm footing, but it would benefit from further evolution. |

| WA 94 (8/2009): The 2006 Fontalloro is much more sweet and open than the firmer Rancia. Enticing, expressive aromatics lead to an expansive core of fruit. Round, finessed tannins give the wine an additional level of polish. Today the Fontalloro is fleshier and more ready than the Rancia. There is superb purity to the fruit and wonderful overall balance. Tar, smoke, licorice, and grilled herbs come to life on the finish. Fontalloro is made from vineyards in both the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Simply put, this is a great, majestic Fontalloro. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2018. |

| WA 91 (12/2002): The brilliant 1999 Chianti Classico Rancia requires 1-3 more years of bottle age. Revealing a deep garnet/ruby/purple color as well as a tightly-knit personality, it offers notes of leather, black cherries, currants, earth, and compost. In the mouth, there is considerable depth, medium to full body, moderately high tannin, and a firm, Bordeaux-like structure super-imposed on the wine's fruit characteristics. | VM 99 (8/2019): The 2015 Flaccianello della Pieve is even more stratospheric than it was last year. Rich and ample on the palate, Flaccianello captures all of the best qualities of this radiant vintage. The blend of sites, all in higher altitude spots near the center of town, yields a gorgeous, riveting wine of the very highest level. Dense and brooding, with magnificent energy as well as nuance, the 2015 Flaccianello is positively stunning. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 97 (8/2013): The 2004 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is fabulous. A reference point wine for the region, the 2004 captures the heart and intellect with its superb balance and pure pedigree. The style is moderately sweet and oxidative, in the best of the Vin Santo tradition. Savory herbs, dried flowers, leather and lightly burned sugar add complexity on the finish. Vin Santo? Felsina remains one of the 2-3 reference points, it's as simple as that. As for the 2004, well, it is utterly majestic. (375 ml) (Drink between 2014-2034). Antonio Galloni. WA 94+ (6/2012): The 2004 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is stunningly beautiful. This is a fairly restrained vintage for the Vin Santo in which some of the wine’s more oxidative qualities are less evident than in other years. Orange peel, burnt sugar, dried flowers and herbs wrap around the generous, inviting finish. Despite its nearly 8 years of age, the 2004 remains very young, with a bright life ahead of it. The wine needs several hours if opened today. Felsina’s Vin Santo is 55% Malvasia, 25% Trebbiano and 20% Sangiovese, aged 7 years in the traditional small Vin Santo casks. |
