Mineral Riesling |

| WA 90 (2/2011): Informed by fruit from some moderately steep slopes in the Fruhlingsplatzchen and Halenberg as well from the cool Rosenberg behind the village, the Schonlebers’ 2009 Riesling trocken Mineral manages to maintain a delightful sense of buoyancy even at 12.5% alcohol. This displays a deep sense of salinity one often associates with quartzite-rich sites, and which here threads its way invigoratingly and saliva-inducingly through a stream of lemon, grapefruit, white peach, and red berries. Cooling high-toned suggestions of mint and oregano add to the sense of refreshment in this long-finishing Riesling that ought to perform well for at least the next 4-5 years. |

JS 97 (9/2021): A breathtaking wine that has all the mineral depth and concentration you associate with a Grand Cru, but also a wide spectrum of very fine citrus and berry aromas. Then it splash lands in an explosion of fresh-herb aromas. Drink or hold. WS 96 (8/2021): The 2020 Frühlingsplätzchen GG is very pure and fresh on the precise and stony, pretty reductive and herbal nose that needs lots of air to open up. Crystalline and pure on the palate, this is a bone-dry, refined, enormously salty and piquant Riesling from partly red slate, loam and quartzite plots. The finish is pure, fresh and precise, very long and expressive. Tasted from a bottle that was opened three days earlier, it is much more charming and open on the nose, showing an intense and complex bouquet of crushed stones, lemons and white fruits. The palate is round and elegant, much lusher and long, but it still has long-lasting salinity on the finish. A gorgeous Frühlingsplätzchen that today comes from stonier plots than in the beginning of the GG saga. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted at the domain in July 2021. |

| VM 93-95 (9/2023): The 2022 Riesling Monzinger Frühlingsplätzchen Grosses Gewächs opens with a sunny, friendly creaminess, and a slight overtone of mango sets an accent. The palate is serene, bright, absolutely focused on lemon and a little lemony pith, but with a luminous, slender creaminess. The textural aspect holds spice, which is not apparent yet but will reveal itself. It also gives structure to this light, bright, filigree wine. Subtle length extends that lovely, gentle pithiness. Anne Krebiehl. |

WA 97 (12/2022): Werner Schönleber served the 2021 Frühlingsplätzchen GG after the Halenberg, which has never been the case here in 20 years, but knowing Werner's passion for the purity and freshness of this terroir, this makes completely sense. I remember I liked the 2019 Frühlingsplätzchen better than the Halenberg when it was young, and also from the 2021 vintage I adore the purity, brightness and flinty finesse of the Frühlingsplätzchen which is definitely the brighter, uplifted and purer Riesling. The finish is enormously salty and savory and reveals lemon fruit bitters on the aftertaste. This is life from stone, and it has a damn serious, very long and saline finish. Natural cork. 12% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. JS 95 (7/2022): Complex nose of pink and yellow grapefruit, peach and spring flowers. A super-elegant, dry Nahe riesling that marries plenty of juicy fruit with excellent concentration and vibrant minerality that leaps out at you. A slew of wild-berry and rose-hip character adds to the excitement at the dangerously crisp, wet-stone finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2024. |

JS 98 (7/2022): The vibrant white-peach, wild-herb and floral bouquet of this stunning GG makes a serious statement. Very compact and concentrated, it’s only just beginning to reveal its abundant treasures. Super-focused and precise, it grows and grows as it shoots over the palate at great speed. Incredible depth of wet-stone minerality at the super-long finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. WA 97 (12/2022): The 2021 Halenberg Riesling GG is coolish, fresh, pure, extraordinarily deep and complex on the ripe and concentrated yet precise nose that reveals notes of crushed stones and iodine. Powerful, rich and complex on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and very intense Riesling with a concentrated fruit core and a firm (mineral) structure that holds and even uplifts this giant that a will develop into an iconic German Riesling over the years in the bottle. It is still tight and youthful but possibly the greatest Halenberg I have tasted in more than 20 years. Natural cork. 12.5% stated alcohol. Tasted at the domaine in August 2022. |

| VM 94 (10/2023): The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese opens with a notion of baked peach, especially baked peach skin, aromatic, slightly caramelized with concentrated fruit. Peach compote sweeps onto the palate, ripe and still with bite, just as cooked peach flesh appears, expressive and sweet but not overdone. This entire flight is a lesson in restraint. The long finish and aftertaste are tempered with citrus, corralling that expressive peach. Lovely, restrained, elegant. Anne Krebiehl. |

| JS 96 (12/2023): Here’s a very classic Mosel Spatlese with exactly the combination of richness, elegance and delicacy that makes this category unique. Such delicate white peach and sliced pear, rose and honeysuckle aromas. Very long finish that is as succulent as it is refined. You just want to linger there for as long as you can. Drink or hold. |

WS 92 (4/2015): This has lots of energy, with enticing thyme and tarragon notes flecking the core of lemon zest, white peach, tangerine and straw flavors. The long salted butter finish crackles with life. Rock-solid, and will be fun to cellar for a touch. Drink now through 2017. 9,417 cases made. WA 92 (10/2016): The 2013 Carbonnieux Blanc felt primal, a little herbaceous on the nose, perhaps without the complexity of some of its peers and yet it opens intriguingly in the glass, a white Bordeaux coveting secrets perhaps. The palate is very saline, almost Muscadet-like with an edgy, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a curious Carbonnieux, atypical for the vintage and there is something in that which is very appealing in its individuality. It might not possess the broad appeal of say, Smith-Haut-Lafitte Blanc, but there is something cerebral about this Carbonnieux Blanc. JS 92 (2/2016): Lots of dried melon, wax and lemon rind. Medium to full body, fresh acidity and a clean finish. Classic white Bordeaux from 75% sauvignon blanc and 25% semillon. Drink now. |

WA 89-91 (4/2018): The Carbonnieux 2017 Blanc is scented of grapefruit and squeezed lemons with a touch of lime leaves and chalk dust. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and clean with great intensity and a long racy finish. VM 92-94 (5/2018): The 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc has an impressive bouquet with scents of Granny Smith apples, crushed stone and nettle. There is certainly impressive intensity here – a bouquet that means business. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity. This is one of the most sophisticated white Carbonnieux that I have encountered at this stage with wonderful mineralite and veins of ginger furnishing the finish that convey brio and confidence. This should evolve into an Outstanding Pessac-Leognan. Neal Martin. JD 89-91 (4/2018): Notes of lemon curd, citrus rind and hints of crushed rock define the 2017 Château Carbonnieux, which is medium-bodied, pure, and elegant on the palate. It’s another great white from the Pessac-Leognan region in 2017. JS 90-91 (4/2018): This is very salty and flavorful with sliced green apples, limes and green pears. Medium-bodied, layered and flavorful. Plenty going on here as always. Minerally. |

JD 91-93 (5/2023): The 2022 Château Carbonnieux Blanc offers a light gold hue as well as a bright, racy, juicy style in its citrus, pineapple, and minty herb-like aromas and flavors. These carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium-bodied, has notable purity, and outstanding length. WA 91-93+ (5/2023): A blend of 65% Sauvignon and 35% Sémillon, the 2022 Carbonnieux Blanc reveals a delicate bouquet with aromas of lemon, jasmine, linden, smoke, pear and peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated palate that's deep and harmonious, with a bright core of fruit and a zesty, mineral-driven finish. Built around racy acids, this is a very classy Carbonnieux Blanc that's built to age with grace. Harvest here began early, on 16 August. |

JS 94-95 (4/2014): This is the best Cos blanc ever, with lots of sliced grapefruit, pears and hints of fennel and aniseed. Full body with bright acidity and fruit. Oyster shell and salt on the finish. Excellent. 76% sauvignon blanc and 24% semillon. NM 90-92 (5/2014): The Chateau Cos d'Estournel Blanc, a blend of 76% Sauvignon Blanc and 24% Semillon with just 7% new oak, has a simple citrus peel and grapefruit bouquet. The palate is well balanced with fine tension and acidity. This is one of the best white Cos d'Estournel that I have tasted in terms of freshness and vitality. Perhaps one of the best white from the estate? WA 89-91 (8/2014): Only 7,000 bottles of this dry white Bordeaux were made from a blend of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. Revealing lots of honeyed grapefruit, lemon zest and metallic-like minerality, this crisp, medium-bodied, beautifully perfumed and intense white can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years. |

JD 95 (3/2021): A blend of two-thirds Sauvignon and one-third Sémillon that was brought up mostly in used barrels, the 2018 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc has a bright gold hue as well as outstanding notes of tart pineapple, white flowers, lemon zest, and white grapefruit. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, bright, racy white with plenty of texture and richness, a notable sense of chalky minerality, and a great finish. This stunning white will keep for 10-15 years. (Drink between 2021-2036). JS 95 (1/2021): A blend of two-thirds Sauvignon and one-third Sémillon that was brought up mostly in used barrels, the 2018 Château Cos D'Estournel Blanc has a bright gold hue as well as outstanding notes of tart pineapple, white flowers, lemon zest, and white grapefruit. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, bright, racy white with plenty of texture and richness, a notable sense of chalky minerality, and a great finish. This stunning white will keep for 10-15 years. WA 94+ (3/2021): The 2018 Blanc is composed of 67% Sauvignon Blanc and 33% Sémillon and was matured in 7% new barriques (13.88% alcohol). It opens very slowly, with a lot of coaxing, to reveal fragrant scents of lime blossoms, yellow apples and fresh grapefruit plus hints of crushed rocks, straw and sea spray. The medium-bodied palate has a beautiful satiny texture and fantastically intense citrus and apple layers with loads of mineral and herbal sparks on the long finish. Give it a good couple of years in bottle to open up, and drink it over the following 10 to 12 years or more. VM 93 (3/2021): The 2018 Cos d'Estournel Blanc is creamy and expressive in the glass, with the natural resonance of the Sémillon very much front and center. Lemon confit, dried flowers, chamomile, marzipan and sage open effortlessly in the glass. This is a decidedly fresh, vibrant style. (Drink between 2021-2030). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 93-95+ (5/2021): The 2020 Cos d'Estournel Blanc is composed of 66% Sauvignon Blanc and 34% Semillon, with an alcohol of 14% and a pH of 3.15. The harvest took place August 31–September 10 with a yield of 24 hectoliters per hectare. It is aging in French oak barrels, 8% new. It bursts from the glass with vibrant notes of lime blossoms, fresh grapefruit and white peaches, plus hints of ripe pears and lemongrass with wafts of chalk dust and wet pebbles. The medium-bodied palate is charged with intense citrus and stony flavors, supported by a seriously racy line of acidity, finishing long and minerally. VM 91-93 (5/2021): The 2020 Cos d’Estournel Blanc has an attractive nose, the Semillon component more expressive than previous vintages, offering scents of beeswax, acacia honey, tinned white peaches and a hint of chamomile. The palate is crisp and taut on the entry, the spiciness on the front end and stem ginger and lemongrass getting the saliva flowing. Showing good weight and balance and an almost understated finish, this is quite simply a dry white Bordeaux that you want to keep drinking more of. Excellent. Neal Martin. JS 98-99 (4/2021): A super white with dense mango, lemon and lime, as well as some clove and nutmeg. Full-bodied, really complete and long. Sensational. So much potential here. 66% sauvignon blanc and 34% semillon. |

WA 93 (6/2016): The 2014 Ygrec is a blend of 75% Sauvignon Blanc and 25% Semillon with seven grams per liter of residual sugar. It has an attractive nose with scents of nettle, dandelion, gooseberry and grass clippings, the Semillon taking a back seat to the Sauvignon Blanc at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with the 20% new oak nicely integrated (the remainder is matured in two-year-old Yquem barrels). It is very refined with lovely passion fruit and kumquat notes towards the second half where finally the Semillon makes its presence felt, with touches of brioche and lemongrass developing in the glass. What a gorgeous Ygrec. WS 93 (7/2016): This has a gorgeous whiff of toast, with alluring shortbread, lemon curd and white peach flavors. The long, creamy finish lets echoes of clementine and honeysuckle drift through. Rounded and creamy overall, but plenty long. A beauty. Drink now through 2020. 1,000 cases made. |

| WA 92 (4/2017): No, not a 2016, but since it is the vintage currently for sale, then I will publish my review of the 2015 Ygrec here. The Sauvignon Blanc (75% of the blend) was picked quickly from 25-27 August this year, the Semillon on 3 and 4 September. It has six grams per liter of residual sugar and the pH, a sizzling 3.20. It has an intriguing bouquet of melted wax, white flowers and hints of sea spray, that marine influence becoming quite strong with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with fresh ginger and lemongrass, lively in the mouth with shades of orange rind and sour lemon towards the persistent finish. I would afford this several years in bottle and I suspect you will end up with a very distinctive dry Bordeaux from the most famous Sauternes estate. |

WA 93 (4/2003): This dense, full-bodied, concentrated, lively Haut-Brion Blanc exhibits aromas of honeyed citrus, flowers, smoke, and melon. It should age marvelously for three decades. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030. VM 93 (5/2003): Bright, pale yellow color. Highly complex but subtle aromas of yellow plum, honey and vanilla. Fatter and fuller than the young 2002, with superb thickness of texture but also terrific definition and cut. Big, chewy wine, with an almost saline impression of extract. This really fills the mouth. Very long and gripping on the back. Stephen Tanzer. WS 92 (7/2003): Very bright aromas of lemons, minerals and hints of grass, with a vanilla and perfumed character. Full-bodied, with a racy acidity and a mineral and apple character. Very long. Drink now. |

VM 95 (6/2006): Brilliant yellow color. Musky aromas of ginger, roasted nuts and honey. Wonderfully large-scaled, round and ripe, conveying a powerful sense of solidity. Tactile, sweet and extremely complex, with honeyed soil tones currently dominating stone fruit and mineral flavors. Finishes dry and classic, with Outstanding breadth. Today this seems fresher and fruitier than the 2004 Laville Haut-Brion. WA 94 (6/2007): (no note given) |

WA 96 (2/2012): An exquisite blend of 84% Semillon and 16% Sauvignon Blanc, this wine possesses a zesty crushed rock component intermixed with lemon butter, fig, white currant, quince and melons. Its steely backbone of acidity gives precision and zestiness to what is a full-bodied, powerful, concentrated dry white that should evolve for 20 or more years. WS 93 (3/2012): Almost lush, with shortbread and verbena notes that lead the way, but this quickly turns racy and refined, with Jonagold apple, Meyer lemon, lime chiffon and chartreuse notes all extending through the detailed finish. An underlying quinine edge adds extra length. A beauty. Best from 2014 through 2024. 540 cases made. VM 91-94 (5/2010): (84% semillon and 16% sauvignon blanc) Pale straw-gold. Initially mute nose hints at sauvignon-like gooseberry and green fig, then changes completely with air to reveal more typical semillon notes of white flowers, white peach and beeswax. Entering very clean and fresh, this wonderfully tactile wine offers precise, pure flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes very long and smooth, with lingering waxy and flinty notes. A more linear and less showy wine than the Haut-Brion Blanc but one that should age effortlessly. This is obviously the wine that was called Laville Haut-Brion prior to 2009, although I should note that La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc was the original name. The name Laville Haut-Brion had been created by previous La Mission owner Frederic Woltner when he bought the adjoining Clos Laville in 1928 and fused it with La Mission. |

WA 96-98+ (4/2013): This blend of 84% Semillon and 16% Sauvignon Blanc is from the vineyard that used to be known as Laville Haut-Brion. Bursting with aromas of candle wax, honeyed tangerines, exotic melon and lychee nut-like notes, it exhibits terrific minerality along with a full-bodied mouthfeel, exceptional concentration, great acids and a long finish that lasts 40+ seconds. This killer dry white wine should drink well for 30-40+ years. JS 96 (11/2013): Lots of mineral, oyster shell, apple pie and white pepper on the nose and palate. Full and rich yet very bright and fresh. Dried pear and apple undertones. Intense. VM 95 (1/2016): The 2012 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is a real stunner. All the elements fall into place in an utterly spellbinding white wine endowed with class and pedigree to burn. A host of orchard fruit, lemon oil, mint and sweet floral notes flesh out, but it is the wine's overall feel and phenomenal, precise finish that elevate it into to the stratosphere. The 2012 can be enjoyed now, but it will also age for decades. NM 95-97 (4/2013): The La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is a blend of 84% Semillon and 16% Sauvignon Blanc, which Jean-Philippe Delmas described as a classic blend. The nose is tightly wound with delicate Kaffir lime, orange zest and citrus lemon – great vigour here. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, lively citric fruit with a superb linearity. You can feel the persistency on the languorous finish that displays wonderful focus and minerality. Superb – but what else did you expect? WS 93 (3/2015): A brisk herbal spine of tarragon and chive runs through the core of yellow apple, white peach and blanched almond notes. A touch nervy on the finish, with a fleur de sel detail, this needs to knit together a bit more in the cellar. Best from 2016 through 2022. 555 cases made. |

JS 99 (2/2017): So much lemon, pineapple and green-papaya aromas here. Stones and salt block, too. Full-bodied, dense and layered with a creamy and layered mouthfeel. Powerful and agile at the same time. Exceptional. Rivals the 100-point 2011 La Mission. Drink if you can find it! VM 95 (2/2017): The 2014 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has really blossomed since I tasted it from barrel. A brilliant, mesmerizing wine, the 2014 exudes personality and class. Lemon confit, white flowers, slate and orchard fruit give the wine its chiseled, expressive personality. Above all else, though, the 2014 is a wine that speaks to balance. There is quite a bit of ripeness and texture, but also vibrant acidity to keep things in check. The blend is 72 % Semillon and 28 % Sauvignon. Antonio Galloni. WS 95 (3/2017): An intriguing flash of mint gives way quickly to white peach, tangerine, dried pineapple and singed macadamia nut notes. Rich, but a bitter orange hint streaks through the finish, imparting terrific cut. Still youthfully raw, but there's more than enough energy and depth here for aging. Best from 2022 through 2032. 625 cases made. NM 93 (3/2017): The 2014 La Mission Haut Brion Blanc has a surprisingly strict bouquet that needed coaxing from the glass, eventually offering scents of Cornice pear, jasmine and honeysuckle. This is very subtle and clearly will need a few years in bottle, just like Laville Haut Brion demanded. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, a cheeky pinch of lemongrass enlivening the senses on the entry, quite a feral La Mission Haut Brion Blanc with the Semillon fully in control on the lightly honeyed, spicy finish. It is a great La Mission Haut Brion, although I remain convinced that the 2014 Haut Brion Blanc has the class this year. |

WA 94-96+ (6/2020): The La Mission Haut-Brion 2019 Blanc is composed of 69.9% Semillon and 30.1% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested from the 30th of August until the 10th of September. The estimated label alcohol degree is 14%. Notions of freshly squeezed limes, grapefruit juice and white peaches come wafting out of the glass followed by suggestions of yuzu zest, coriander seed, underripe pineapple, wet pebbles and green mango with a touch of fennel. The medium to full-bodied palate offers layer upon layer of citrus fruits and mineral accents wrapped in a beautiful satiny texture and featuring seamless freshness, finishing long and chalky. VM 96 (6/2020): The 2019 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc is a total stunner. Freshly cut flowers, mint, apple, citrus and sage are all finely cut in a chiseled, crystalline white of magnificent beauty. The Blanc is so deep and fully flavored, yet remains taut and light on its feet. It is a truly remarkable wine by any measure. Antonio Galloni. JD 96-100 (6/2020): The 2019 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc is a more Semillon-dominated release (compared to the Haut-Brion Blanc) and checks in as 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc. It doesn't have quite the same exotic, mineral-laced style of the Haut-Brion Blanc yet offers brilliant notes of white peach, honeysuckle, white flowers, key lime pie, and a building sense of minerality. It's a rich, powerful, full-bodied white with a mouthfilling texture, ample mid-palate density, and a blockbuster of a finish. JS 98-99 (6/2020): This is a juicy, savory white with dried apples and peaches and saltiness at the same time. Very classic, but even more precise. Layered and powerful. Exciting. Semillon and sauvignon blanc, as always. |

JD 94 (5/2023): While the 2022 Château Lynch Bages Blanc had been bottled just prior to my visit, it wasn't showing any worse for wear and has a terrific perfume of honeyed lime, white flowers, citrus, and chalky minerality. Based on 67% Sauvignon, 22% Sémillon, and 11% Muscadelle, it stays fresh, vibrant, medium-bodied, and refreshing on the palate. VM 92 (5/2023): The 2022 Blanc de Lynch-Bages is bright and nicely focused, with tons of Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors driving the blend. Citrus, white flowers, mint, chalk and tomato leaf are very nicely delineated. The 2022 has just been bottled, but its freshness is notable. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 97 (2/2016): This is vibrant and gorgeous with dried pineapple, honey and cream. Full body, plenty of energetic structure and a long, long finish. Goes on for minutes. Fantastic Aile. Sauvignon blanc with semillon. Structured! VM 90-93 (5/2014): (67% sauvignon blanc and 33% semillon): Dark gold-tinged straw-yellow. Smoky herbs, grapefruit pith and honeydew melon aromas are complicated by white peach and spicy pear. Dense and brisk on entry, then a bit diffuse in the middle, but with vibrant flavors of passion fruit, grapefruit and herbs. Firm and bright but quite ripe too, showing nothing green or hard on the long, bracing finish. Seems less focused than recent vintages of Aile d'Argent, but perhaps another year in the bottle will help it gain precision. Ian d'Agata. WS 90 (4/2015): Quite bold, with a singed brioche frame adding some heft to the core of lemon curd, tangerine and lemon chiffon notes. Features a long salted butter finish. An extroverted style, but has enough zip to stay honest. Drink now through 2016. WA 89 (8/2015): The 2013 Aile d'Argent Blanc has an attractive nose of lime leaf, grapefruit and a touch of yellow plum, still a little new oak to be assimilated, but otherwise very appealing. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of almond and lemongrass on the entry, crisp acidity ,but just missing a little length on the finish to merit a higher evaluation. Enjoy this white from Philippe Dhalluin and the team over the next 7-10 years. |

JD 97 (2/2020): The 2017 Chateau Pape Clement Blanc showed spectacularly well and is one of the wines (if not the wine) of the vintage. Based on 55% Sauvignon and 45% Semillon aged 14 months in barrel, it offers powerful notes of honeyed melon, tart pineapple, green figs, and floral notes as well as a terrific sense of minerality. Concentrated, medium to full-bodied, with rocking levels of acidity, give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15 years or more. JS 96 (12/2019): Aromas of pineapple, peaches and apple pie with stone. Deep and intense, yet always subtle in the nose. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. However, it stays focused and precise in the mouth and at the finish. Serious length. Still needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2022. WS 95 (3/2020): This features a beeswax frame around a large-scaled core of wet straw, creamed white peach, yellow apple and fennel flavors, while a racy quinine thread runs underneath. Shows a flash of brioche on the finish, with the beeswax element lingering. Needs a little time, but this is distinctive and beautiful. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Sauvignon Gris and Muscadelle. Best from 2021 through 2029. WA 94+ (3/2020): The Pape Clement 2017 Blanc (composed of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon) has loads of exotic fruit—pineapple, green guava and passion fruit—with crushed stones, fragrant herbs and mandarin peel hints. The palate is medium-bodied, intense and racy with a long, pure, exotic fruit finish. VM 94 (3/2020): The 2017 Pape Clement Blanc is airy, weighty and so inviting. Hints of tangerine, passion fruit, white flowers and mint all lift from the glass. In the recent past, the Blanc has been oily and unctuous. There is plenty of textural depth to the 2017, but what impresses me most is its understatement and refinement. There is so much to like. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 98 (1/2021): Beautiful aromas of lime curd, dried pear, grilled white peach and flint on the nose. So exotic on the nose. Some cream and honey, too. It’s medium-bodied with bright, tangy acidity. Creamy and focused with lingering dried-citrus and crushed-gravel notes. Long. Drink or hold. WS 96 (3/2021): A beauty from the start, with shortbread, acacia and honeysuckle details leading the way, quickly followed by fennel, tarragon, salted butter and lemon peel notes. Long, focused finish is carried by superfine acidity that puts everything in perfect lock step. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle. Best from 2022 through 2030. 1,665 cases made. WA 95 (3/2021): The 2018 Blanc is a blend of 57% Sauvignon Blanc, 39% Semillon and 4% Muscadelle. It was aged for around 14 months in 55% new and 45% second-fill French oak barrels. It races out of the gate with flamboyant scents of pineapple upside-down cake, lemon meringue pie and honey-drizzled peaches, plus suggestions of orange blossoms and yuzu peel. The medium to full-bodied palate has a decadent touch of oiliness to the texture with loads of spicy sparks to the tropical fruit layers, finishing long with a refreshing burst of zestiness. It's a richer expression, for sure, but it really works and it is seriously scrumptious. JD 94 (3/2021): This estate has fashioned a pretty, elegant white in the vintage. Light gold-hued, with lots of pineapple, lemon curd, white flowers, and a touch of honeyed citrus and chalky minerality, the 2018 Château Pape Clement Blanc hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, solid depth of fruit, and a great finish. It doesn't match recent great vintages, but it's a balanced, layered, outstanding white to enjoy over the coming decade or so. VM 93 (3/2021): The 2018 Pape Clement Blanc is quite pretty and understated. Lemon confit, marzipan, white flowers, mint and chamomile all grace this wonderfully expressive dry white from proprietor Bernard Magrez. As with all of these wines, the Blanc is done in a less opulent style than in the past, an approach that works beautifully here. Antonio Galloni. |

JD 96 (4/2022): The flagship white of the château is the 2019 Château Pape Clement Blanc, which is a mix of 46% Sauvignon, 40% Semillon, and the balance Sauvignon Gris. Its light gold hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of mandarin orange, honeyed grapefruit, white flowers, and chalky minerality. I love its freshness and vibrancy on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, sexy, opulent mouthfeel, good acidity, and a great finish. It's a beautiful, seamless, complete Bordeaux Blanc that will keep for 15 years or more in cold cellars, although it's stunning even today. The style of the white here today is one of more finesse and elegance compared to the richer, more sexy style of the past. WS 93 (3/2022): Enticing, featuring a flash of brioche amid the white peach, verbena and lemon peel notes, with a subtle echo of salted butter through the finish. Stylish and sneaky long, too. Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Sauvignon Gris. Drink now through 2027. 1,665 cases made. JS 97 (1/2022): Aromas of green apple, lime, kumquat, fresh thyme, flint, stone and oyster shell. It’s medium-bodied with tangy acidity and a saline, mineral and zesty palate. Vibrant and intense. So much energy and freshness. Lots of vivid acidity. Tight at the end. Give this another three to four years of bottle. |

JD 96 (4/2022): The flagship white of the château is the 2019 Château Pape Clement Blanc, which is a mix of 46% Sauvignon, 40% Semillon, and the balance Sauvignon Gris. I love its freshness and vibrancy on the nose, and it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a supple, sexy, opulent mouthfeel, good acidity, and a great finish. JD 96-98+ (5/2023): A full-bodied, concentrated, awesome Pessac, the 2022 Château Pape Clément offers up loads of spiced red and black fruits, some leafy tobacco, gravelly earth, and graphite aromatics, building, ripe, polished tannins, and a stacked mid-palate. Beautifully done, with remarkable purity and a great finish, it's going to rank with the crème de la crème of the vintage and is well worth seeking out. VM 93-95 (5/2023): The 2022 Pape Clement Blanc is a very pretty, exotic white. Drops of Muscadelle in the blend add a very pretty hint of jasmine and lime to play off the richer, riper flavors on the palate. The 2022 offers lovely density and creaminess, with plenty of orchard fruit, marzipan and chamomile flavors, yet also remains light on its feet and wonderfully fresh. Tasted three times. Antonio Galloni. WA 92-94 (5/2023): Revealing aromas of blueberries, cassis, spring flowers and toasty new oak, the 2022 Pape Clément is full-bodied, broad and textural, with a rich, layered core of super-ripe fruit framed by liberally extracted tannins that assert themselves on the firm, lavishly oaky finish. This is a flamboyant, unabashedly modern-styled Pape Clément that will need several years in the cellar to blossom. It's a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. |

JD 91-94 (4/2024): One of the more serious whites in the vintage, the 2023 Château Pape Clément Blanc has a medium gold hue as well as a terrific nose of ripe stone fruits, honeyed flowers, and toasted bread. This carries to a more medium-bodied white with a vibrant, focused mouthfeel, integrated yet bright acidity, and a clean, crisp, mineral-laced finish. It's not up with the great vintages of this cuvée, but it's nevertheless a beautifully balanced white that will shine for a decade. VM 93-95 (4/2024): The 2023 Pape Clément Blanc is another strong vintage for a wine that has been in transition for a few years now. There's still plenty of textural richness in the Blanc, but less of the tropical character and flamboyance of some past years. Orange peel, mint, dried herbs, chamomile and crushed flowers open gracefully. All the elements are so well balanced. Tasted three times. Antonio Galloni. WA 91-93 (4/2024): Aromas of white flowers, lemon oil, pomegranate and lemongrass preface the 2023 Pape Clément Blanc, a moderately weighted, sappy, layered and incisive wine with bright acids and a penetrating, mouthwatering finish. In comparison to previous vintages, the use of wood has been scaled back, allowing the wine to express a closer connection to its terroir and achieve greater precision in its aromatic profile. |

JS 97 (11/2013): Wonderfully complex nose in this white with ripe lemon, green papaya, lime peel and lots of ripe yellow peach. Full and focused, it offers a beautiful ripe acidity and silky texture on the palate. Long and precise finish with lots of flowers and mineral. What a wonderful white wine! Drink or hold. WA 95 (2/2013): A stunning wine with hints of pineapple, caramelized citrus, mandarin oranges, smoky figs and hazelnuts, this is a full-bodied, rich, superb white Graves from the Cathiard family. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2035. NM 95 (3/2014): Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. The Chateau Smith Haut-Lafitte Blanc has a comparatively subtle bouquet with peach skin and nectarine scents, nicely defined but perhaps needing a little more vigour. The palate is a little simple compared to its peers, more backward and reticent, with green apple and shaved ginger towards the somewhat conservative finish. This is ageing beautifully in bottle - one of the finest Bordeaux whites of the vintage. Tasted January 2014. WS 93 (3/2013): This crackles with thyme and savory notes, offsetting the powerful core of lemon curd, white peach and fennel. The long, pure finish has a stony thread and extra waves of fruit and herb. Drink now through 2019. |

JS 96 (11/2013): This is fabulous. It's a white that is so vertical with wonderful depth of fruit and structure. It goes on for minutes. Dense and complex. It's so structured and amazing. Peaches and mineral with a salty and savory character. It is captivating to taste now. WA 95 (4/2015): The grand vin, the 2012 Smith Haut Lafitte, offers up lovely honeysuckle, orange marmalade, white peach, fig, and caramelized citrus notes. Medium to full-bodied, with great concentration and length, and a stunningly long finish, it should last for 20-25 years. WS 94 (3/2015): Packed, with dense straw, tarragon, white peach, chamomile and tangerine notes, this is still a touch tight but should unfurl fully soon enough. Shows lovely cut despite the weight, ending with a long echo of yellow chartreuse and salted butter. Drink now through 2020. 2,500 cases made. VM 93 (4/2014): The 2012 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a supple, immediate wine. Pear, quince, white flowers, slate and mint all meld together in an effortless, gracious wine to enjoy now and over the next few years. Today the 2012 comes across as a bit one dimensional and not as complex nor complete as the very best years, and yet it is absolutely gorgeous, a testament to just how privileged this site is. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 96-97 (4/2017): A dense and powerful white with wonderful depth and phenolic tension. Shows very pretty sliced-apple, lemon and pear character. Excellent finish. 90% sauvignon blanc with the rest semillon and sauvignon gris. Excellent follow-up to the 2015. WS 92-95 (4/2017): Bright and engaging, with a nice crackle of fleur de sel along the edges of the salted butter, white peach and chamomile core. There's a flash of shortbread on the finish, but it hangs well back for now. Really good freshness for the vintage. |

WA 97+ (3/2020): The 2017 Blanc prances out of the glass with pretty, cheerful scents of fresh green apples, lemongrass, lime leaves and white peaches plus spicy touches of fresh ginger, coriander seed and white pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity and tension, with a racy backbone cutting through the tightly knit citrus and spice layers, finishing long and mineral laced. JD 97 (2/2020): One of the whites of the vintage is the 2017 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, which is based on 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. Offering a huge, salty, mineral-laced bouquet of crushed lemons, acacia flowers, pineapple, and crushed rocks, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, racy acidity, a stacked mid-palate, and a crisp, chiseled, lengthy finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It has the fruit and texture to drink nicely even today, yet my money is on it benefiting from 2-4 years of bottle age, and it should have over two decades of longevity. JS 97 (12/2019): This is fabulous white with sliced apples, pears, stones, flint and light cream. Really incredible. Full-bodied, yet so tight and polished with superb finesse and density at the same time. A fantastic Smith white. A blend of 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon. Drink or hold. VM 96 (3/2020): The 2017 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2017 has so much to offer. Citrus peel, white flowers and mint are all generous in the glass. More than that, the 2017 offers an interplay of tension and textural opulence that is incredibly appealing. The blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris. Antonio Galloni. WS 96 (3/2020): Juicy energy ripples from start to finish, with gooseberry, yellow apple, chamomile, tarragon and verbena notes giving this a tangy and flattering character. Reveals a long salted butter edge on the finish. Lovely now, but will fan out and become plumper with time. Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Sauvignon Gris. JD 95-97 (5/2023): The flagship 2022 Château Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is a normal blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon. Aged in 55% new French oak, it shines in the vintage and brings plenty of classic richness and depth while at the same time staying pure, clean, and balanced. Honeyed lemon, orange blossom, white flowers, and crushed stone all define the aromatics, and it has a beautiful mouthfeel that certainly brings the richness and depth of the vintage. This is another gem of a white from this incredible château. VM 94-96 (5/2023): The 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is airy, weightless and gracious. Citrus confit, mint, white pepper and tangerine oil and a kiss of French oak are all beautifully lifted. There’s lovely richness and texture but without the opulence of most warm, dry years. The 2022 will be a gorgeous wine at the dinner table. Antonio Galloni. WA 93-95 (5/2023): It appears likely that the 2022 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc will overtake its 2019 counterpart as one of the most successful white wines this estate has produced to date, something that's especially impressive in the context of the vintage. Exhibiting aromas of linden, menthol, crisp orchard fruit and smoke, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and crystalline, with racy acids and an unctuos mid-palate. Chalky structuring dry extract makes its presence felt on the long, mineral finish. This is a blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Sémillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris. |

WA 96 (4/2010): (no tasting note given) VM 93+ (8/2010): Pale, bright yellow. Reticent but pure aromas of lemon, crushed stone, violet and lavender. Locked up tight on the palate, showing near-painful flavors of citrus peel, crushed stone and vanilla. This very shy and youthfully disjointed wine probably needs 15 years in the cellar to harmonize and express itself. NM 93 (11/2011): Tasted blind at the 2007 Bordeaux horizontal in Southwold. This has a fine, vivacious bouquet of almond, grapefruit; a touch of pear and some lovely crushed stone aromas coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with good acidity and weight. It has an appealing waxy texture with notes of citrus lemon, pear and walnut, though it clams up towards the finish. Give this time in bottle, as it is sure to repay you. |

JS 98 (2/2016): This is a phenomenal white with big density and energy. Full bodied, yet incredibly agile and intense. Fabulous character of salt, minerals, and shells. Just a hint of tannins. Dried white peaches. Pears and apples. Super subtle character. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon. Great wine. A wine for the future but so great now. WA 94 (10/2016): The 2013 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is very refined on the nose. There is a sense of effortlessness here that is very persuasive, unfolding with lemon thyme and lime, just a touch of lychee in the background, everything in its right place. The palate is fresh and vibrant with nectarine and lime zest, a "cool" white Bordeaux, quite restrained and almost Chablis-like on the finish. This is a complex and intellectual offering from Olivier Bernard, dare I say, a thrilling wine in the making. VM 92-95 (5/2014): Bright straw-yellow. The captivating nose hints at a considerable semillon component, with its white stone fruit and beeswax notes accented by fresh citrus and white flowers. Bright and juicy but dense, with lively acidity providing clarity and cut to the white stone fruit and citrus fruit flavors. The finish is vibrant and long, with pronounced minerality and a nice floral touch. Outstanding white Bordeaux in the making. Ian d'Agata. WS 92-95 (7/2014): This marries high-pitched thyme, chamomile and quinine notes with richer white peach, shortbread and meringue flavors. The long finish pulls everything together. Should be a beauty when finished. |

WA 94-96+ (6/2020): Blended of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, the 2019 Blanc was harvested from 3rd of September to 19th of September. The alcohol is 14%. It is aging on its lees in French oak barrels, 35% new, for an anticipated 18 months. The nose is almost completely shut down on first sniff, soon giving way to notions of freshly squeezed lemons and limes, green apples and pear slices with nuances of orange blossom, fresh ginger and marzipan. Medium-bodied, the palate has a beguilingly satiny texture with crisp freshness, packed full of zesty layers, finishing long and perfumed. VM 93-95 (6/2020): The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was picked from 3 to 19 September and aged on the lees for 18 months in 35% new oak. It has a crisp, delineated nose that gains intensity with aeration, offering enticing aromas of kaffir lime, yellow plums and jasmine. A subtle crushed stone scent emerges with time. The palate is well balanced with a saline entry and just the right amount of piquancy. A very saline, marine-influenced finish that gets the mouth salivating. It just cries out for a heaving platter of shucked oysters! Neal Martin. JD 96-98 (6/2020): The flagship white is the 2019 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc. It offers a richer, more concentrated profile that carries rocking caramelized citrus, mandarin orange, and honeyed flower notes as well as full-bodied richness, a layered, opulent texture, bright acidity, and a great finish. It's certainly more opulent and upfront than the 2015 and 2016 were at this stage, and I suspect it will have more upfront appeal as well. It should nevertheless evolve gracefully. Tasted twice. JS 95-96 (6/2020): This is an opulent, dense white with dried-apple and honey character. Salty and hot-stone notes, too. Full-bodied, round and phenolic. Formed and beautiful. Quite open. Intense length. |

JD 95 (3/2023): Ripe melon, honeyed mint, and dried herb notes all emerge from the 2020 Domaine De Chevalier Blanc, a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated, yet tight and backward white built for the cellar. Mostly Sauvignon yet with a good chunk of Semillon, this balanced, focused, incredibly impressive dry white needs 3-5 years of bottle age and, I suspect, will evolve for 15+ years. VM 95 (2/2023): The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc marries power and tension so well. Lemon confit marzipan, chamomile, dried orchard fruit and crushed flowers all build effortlessly into the expansive, beautifully resonant finish. Above all else, the Blanc is a wine of savory/mineral complexity and structure. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Tasted two times. Antonio Galloni. WS 95 (3/2023): A very young, powerful, coiled-up white, with verbena, mirabelle plum, quinine, gooseberry gelée and fleur de sel notes weaving together. The long finish has a flash of bitter almond but keeps a nice nervy feel, with an underlying mineral hint. One to cellar a bit and let unwind. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Best from 2024 through 2029. JS 96-97 (4/2021): A dense, creamy DC white with lots of rich cooked-apple, mineral, cream and praline character. It’s full and very layered with chewy intensity and a long, bitter-lemon and almost honey finish. Pretty phenolic tension, too. WA 94-96 (5/2021): The 2020 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc bursts with notions of ripe yellow apples, juicy pears and lime blossoms, plus hints of blanched almonds, yuzu zest and wet pebbles. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers impactful apple and citrus flavors with a racy backbone and seductive oiliness to the texture, finishing long and minerally. |

JD 93 (4/2022): A wine that I don't get to taste often, the 2019 Château Cheval Blanc Le Petit Cheval Blanc is a stunning white that's certainly worth seeking out, and it actually reminds me of the great white from Château Margaux. Vibrant citrus, white flowers, lime, and chalky mineral notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, has terrific purity, bright acidity, and the balance to evolve for over a decade. VM 91 (2/2023): The 2019 Le Petit Cheval Blanc feels more Sauvignon-driven on the nose, Granny Smith apples and gooseberry. A touch of wild nettle emerges with time. The palate is well-balanced with fine weight, not quite as complex as the best dry white in the flight, just a bit too toasty towards the finish. But there is sufficient length and freshness, but perhaps not one that will cellar as long as others. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Neal Martin. |

JD 93-95+ (4/2024): The 2023 Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc is knockout stuff and consistently checks in with the crème de la crème of dry whites from Bordeaux. All Sauvignon Blanc, it has a riveting nose of honeyed limes, grapefruit, and mint. This carries to a medium-bodied white with remarkable purity, a racy, almost bracing spine of acidity, incredible precision, and a great finish. It's going to be incredibly long-lived, and I suspect 2-4 years of bottle age will help its acidity round into form. VM 92-94 (4/2024): The 2023 Pavillon Blanc is quite powerful in this vintage, marked by a combination of creamy, textured fruit, bright acids and an almost phenolic feel that adds pseudo-tannic structure. I imagine the 2023 will need a few years in bottle. Pavillon Blanc is usually more immediate and racier, but the 2023 looks like more of a long-distance runner. Lemon Antonio Galloni. WA 93-95 (4/2024): The 2023 Pavillon Blanc from Château Margaux, harvested during the morning hours of the August 23-30 heatwave, possesses a deep, complex bouquet of spring flowers, lemon oil, ripe orchard fruits, lemongrass and sweet gooseberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, round and concentrated palate that's animated by lively acids, concluding with a long, taut, delicately phenolic finish. This bottling amounts to only 45% of the entire crop, the rest being relegated to a second wine. |

WA 93 (5/2009): Intense citrus and tropical fruit aromas of warm grapefruit, lemon curd, pineapple and a fair amount of cedar. The rich, full bodied palate provides refreshing medium to high acidity balancing the concentrated toasted almond and lemon pie flavours. Long finish with a pleasant touch phenolic grip from the new oak. Just starting to be approachable. Drink now to 2020+. Tasted February 2009. WS 92 (3/2008): Dense and powerful. Very tight, with aromas of flint, apples and citrus fruit that follow through to a full body, with honey and vanilla character. Needs time. Like a premier cru white Burgundy. Best after 2010. VM 91-94 (6/2006): Brisk aromas of citrus skin, flowers, minerals and mint, along with a deeper hint of honey. Wonderfully fresh in the mouth yet sweet, with highly concentrated flavors of grapefruit, lemon, mint and fresh herbs. There's a coolness to this wine but at the same time more creaminess and body than the comparatively crisp 2004. The second consecutive Outstanding vintage for this 100%-sauvignon blanc cuvee |

| WS 94 (3/2012): This really sneaks up on you, with laserlike focus to the blanched macadamia nut, honeysuckle, white peach and creamed yellow apple fruit flavors. Very sleek and restrained, with a long, stone-framed finish that's as pure as freshly fallen snow. Best from 2013 through 2023. |

| JD 95 (11/2017): The 2015 Pavillon Blanc is another terrific Bordeaux Blanc from this great vintage. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc aged in 25% new French oak (which is slightly less than normal), it boasts classic notes of caramelized limes, white grapefruit, and white flowers, medium to full-bodied richness, vibrant, racy acidity and blockbuster length on the finish. It’s unquestionably one of the gem dry whites in the vintage. |
