VM 90+ (11/2003): Good full red. Currant, black cherry, licorice, meat, graphite and smoky oak on the nose. Sappy on entry, then tight and minerally in the middle, with the wine's acids and oak currently keeping the fruit under wraps. Densely packed but a bit youthfully awkward today. The firm, persistent finish offers a suggestion of green tea. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90 (8/2004): Sweet red currant liqueur, cassis, and copious spices make up the nose of the outstanding 2001 Clos de Betz. A suave, densely packed, medium to full-bodied wine, it reveals an intense character of red cherries, blackberries, black currants, and notes of brambleberries. A hint of alcohol was detected in the finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2011. |

WS 94 (7/2004): Rich, densely packed and powerful, a lively mouthful of plum, blueberry and exotic spice flavors that last and last on the aristocratic finish. Has power to burn and plenty of grace to balance the scales. Best from 2006 through 2015. 510 cases made. WA 92 (8/2004): Smoky oak, freshly laid road tar, and a myriad of dark fruits are found in the nose of the dark-colored 2001 Pere de Famille. A medium to full-bodied wine of wonderful intensity, purity, and great length, it displays a satin-textured core of ripe blackberries, cassis liqueur, and spices. Drink this beauty between 2006 and 2018. VM 91+ (12/2003): (includes 16% cabernet franc and 14% merlot) Medium red-ruby. Very cabernet on the nose, with currant, graphite, fresh herbs and pepper showing, along with a suggestion of white chocolate. Dense and powerful, with flavors of dark berries, minerals, licorice and herbs. Serious, firmly tannic wine that's not at all overly sweet. Like the Clos de Betz, this was bottled in May and will almost certainly merit a higher score as it harmonizes in bottle. (The fruit component here is even stronger than that of the very suave 2000 bottling.) |

Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon |

WA 96 (6/2011): Caymus has been around for so long there is a tendency to under-estimate their wines. However, they have a brilliant track record as evidenced by the decade old 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Vintage Selection. Abundant chocolaty, black currant, licorice and coffee aromas soar from the glass of this perfumed wine. It exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, wonderful opulence, a deep, full-bodied mouthfeel, fabulous depth and not a hard edge to be found. While seemingly fully mature, the supple tannins, expansive fruit and glycerin, depth and overall balance suggest it will keep for another 15+ years. WS 95 (6/2004): Lots of aromatic complexity, with ripe plum, blackberry, mineral, slate and cedary oak flavors that are rich and concentrated, with ripe, polished tannins and a long, full-bodied finish that echoes mocha and berry flavors. Keeps revealing vivid and thick flavor nuances. Another amazing Caymus Special Selection. Best from 2005 through 2013. |

| WA 94 (5/2011): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Bosche (from that iconic site on the west side of Rutherford planted in gravelly, loamy soils) is composed of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc. It boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a classic nose of loamy soil, kirsch liqueur, Provencal garrigue, black currants and spice box. Full-bodied, opulent, fleshy and fully mature with fabulous balance, it is hard to ignore this stunning 2001. The good news is that there were 2,400+ cases made of it from this 22-acre site. It is capable of lasting another 15-20 years. |

| WA 88 (12/2006): The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is the tightest of this quartet as well as the most structured. It appears to be in a middle-aged state that is no longer primary, but the secondary aromas have not yet emerged. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by hints of new saddle leather, cassis, and spice. Medium to full-bodied, but not as impressive as its siblings, it should be consumed over the next decade. |

L’Esprit des Pavots Proprietary Blend |

| WA 89 (12/2003): A second wine produced from juice culled from Les Pavots lots is called L’Esprit des Pavots. There are 875 cases of the 2001, a blend of 47% Cabernet Franc, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Merlot. It is no wimpish wine at 15.6% alcohol, but that is not even noticeable in this dark ruby/purple-colored offering. A big bouquet of cocoa, espresso roast, vanilla, chocolate, and ripe black currants as well as cherries is followed by a medium-bodied, supple-textured red that is best consumed over the next 7-8 years. |

| WA 78 (6/2011): This surprisingly light-bodied, pleasant, one-dimensional 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals some dried fruit characteristics, has begun to desiccate and lose whatever vibrancy it once possessed. Since this is the only time I have tasted the wine, it is difficult to know what it was like seven or eight years ago. However, it has no future. |

WS 91 (6/2004): Supple, with rich mocha and brownie flavors and lively currant and spice. While the flavors are concentrated and the wine is well-structured, it offers a sense of finesse and complexity. Drink now through 2010. 580 cases made. VM 88 (2/2005): Bright red-ruby. Aromas of bitter cherry, espresso and mint, with a light leafy quality. A bit herbal and green yet creamy-sweet in the middle, with a firm shape. Finishes with sweet tannins and good grip. |

WA 92 (10/2003): A big, ripe, Amarone-like bouquet emerges from the dark ruby/purple-colored 2001 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard. Full-bodied, rich, and chewy, with loads of briery black cherry, raspberry, and currant fruit, it remains the reference point for what Zinfandel can achieve in Contra Costa. A sweet spot in the mid-palate (because of the high glycerin) results in a hypothetical blend of California Zinfandel and Italian Amarone. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years. VM 92 (6/2003): Bright ruby. Superripe aroma of maraschino cherry liqueur, with exotic hints of peach and apricot. A large-scaled, lush fruit bomb with dense, creamy fruit and noteworthy depth of flavor. Has the sheer guts to buffer its substantial tannic spine. Reminded me of the 2000 version. |

La Joie Proprietary Blend |

|
| |
| WA 96 (12/2003): I was thrilled by the awesome quality of the 2001 La Joie, a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 9% Cabernet Franc. Aromas and flavors of roasted espresso, grilled herbs, scorched earth, blackberries, and cassis liqueur are accompanied by an unctuously-textured, full-bodied, expansive, dense, phenomenally concentrated, pure blockbuster. It should be at its finest between 2005-2020+. This is an out and out brilliant wine! |
