Tasting Notes:
JS 97-98 (4/2018): This is very powerful with a super aftertaste of chalk, limestone, and crush sea shells. Full body, layered with phenolic texture that resembles a sleek red. Yet it’s fresh vivid all the time like the excellent white it is. The white pepper character combined with dried citrus is fabulous.
VM 94-97 (5/2018): The 2017 Pavillon Blanc is simply magnificent. Gracious and translucent in the glass, the 2017 is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. The flavors are bright and wonderfully sculpted, with plenty of citrus peel, orchard fruit and crushed rock nuances that develop as the wine builds into its creamy, resonant finish. Pavillon Blanc is the highlight this year at Margaux. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93-95 (4/2018): Margaux has a spraying system to combat frost at the Pavillon Blanc vineyard, but they lost a bit of production, with yields finishing at 22 hectoliters per hectare. The nose of the 2017 Pavillon Blanc du Chateau Margaux is a little reticent to begin, giving way to beautiful white peach, grapefruit and lemongrass notes plus hints of mandarin peel, honeysuckle, baking bread and just a waft of ginger. The medium to full-bodied palate is very crisp and super intense, laden with citrus and stone fruit layers, coupled with a lovely satiny texture and plenty of weight without feeling heavy, finishing with incredible length and a lingering mineral note.
JD 93-95 (4/2018): The 2017 whites are in the same league as the 2015 yet are drastically different in style, showing more freshness and minerality, while still being nicely concentrated. The 2017 Pavillon Blanc is a juicy, racy effort and offers a medium-bodied, vibrant, tight, salty style to go with classic notes of lemon, citrus, mint, and ample minerality. Drink it over the coming 15-20 years.

| WA 94 (5/2016): The 2006 Pavillon Blanc du Château Margaux has always been one of the pinnacle white releases from this First Growth and at ten years of age, I have no reason to change my mind. It has an exquisite bouquet of lemon curd, orange scents and a touch of praline that is very delineated and focused. The palate exhibits fine balance with hints of crème fraiche, almond and even a cheeky dab of marzipan. Funnily enough, it is difficult imagining that this is 100% Sauvignon Blanc and in fact, there is something almost Burgundy-like about this Pavillon Blanc (as I suggested in my barrel tasting note). Irrespective of origin, what it constitutes is a damn glorious white Bordeaux that comes highly recommended. So much so, I would drink this now rather than later. Tasted January 2016. |

WA 91-93 (4/2009): Compared to 2006 and 2007, the 2008 dry white wines of Bordeaux are inferior, but that does not mean they are not very good. They do not possess the flesh, power, or richness of the 2006 and 2007, but they reveal precise, intensely aromatic personalities, lighter bodies, and more noticeable acidity. These remain among the world’s most underrated world-class dry white wines. I will provide full tasting notes once they are in bottle, but following are the dry whites I tasted along with their approximate scores.
VM 89-91 (5/2009): (100% sauvignon blanc; 25 hl/ha; 14% alcohol) Straw-green. Typical pure sauvignon nose of green fig, yellow melon and ripe gooseberry, nicely complemented by hints of chamomile and mint. The delicate fresh flavors echo the aromas in this subtle, aromatically complex white wine. The moderately concentrated but long finish offers a mineral element and a lingering note of green anise. You might say the '08 is back to normalfor Pavillon Blanc, after the flamboyantly rich '07, with its almost 16% alcohol. Ian d'Agata. |

JS 98 (2/2015): Incredible clarity and freshness with minerals, lemons, chalk and steel. It’s so racy and exciting. Changes to white peaches and mangoes. Just flies at the end of the palate. Super subtle. Delicate yet agile and powerful. Pinpointed structure and flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. Just a hint of lemon rind and salt. A triumph. Better in 2018. But who can wait?
VM 93 (1/2016): The 2012 Pavillon Blanc comes across as a bit closed today and far less expressive than the reds. Green pear, grapefruit, white flowers and lime unfold in a graceful, exquisite Pavillon Blanc built on delicacy and finesse, while the bright, saline-infused finish makes it virtually impossible to resist a second taste. Tightly-wound and energetic to the core, the 2012 appears to have a very bright future. Antonio Galloni. |

| JD 95 (11/2017): The 2015 Pavillon Blanc is another terrific Bordeaux Blanc from this great vintage. Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc aged in 25% new French oak (which is slightly less than normal), it boasts classic notes of caramelized limes, white grapefruit, and white flowers, medium to full-bodied richness, vibrant, racy acidity and blockbuster length on the finish. It’s unquestionably one of the gem dry whites in the vintage. |

JD 93-95+ (4/2024): The 2023 Château Margaux Pavillon Blanc is knockout stuff and consistently checks in with the crème de la crème of dry whites from Bordeaux. All Sauvignon Blanc, it has a riveting nose of honeyed limes, grapefruit, and mint. This carries to a medium-bodied white with remarkable purity, a racy, almost bracing spine of acidity, incredible precision, and a great finish. It's going to be incredibly long-lived, and I suspect 2-4 years of bottle age will help its acidity round into form.
VM 92-94 (4/2024): The 2023 Pavillon Blanc is quite powerful in this vintage, marked by a combination of creamy, textured fruit, bright acids and an almost phenolic feel that adds pseudo-tannic structure. I imagine the 2023 will need a few years in bottle. Pavillon Blanc is usually more immediate and racier, but the 2023 looks like more of a long-distance runner. Lemon Antonio Galloni.
WA 93-95 (4/2024): The 2023 Pavillon Blanc from Château Margaux, harvested during the morning hours of the August 23-30 heatwave, possesses a deep, complex bouquet of spring flowers, lemon oil, ripe orchard fruits, lemongrass and sweet gooseberries, followed by a medium to full-bodied, round and concentrated palate that's animated by lively acids, concluding with a long, taut, delicately phenolic finish. This bottling amounts to only 45% of the entire crop, the rest being relegated to a second wine.
JA 96 (4/2024): White peach flesh on the opening gives an opulent start that quickly narrows inwards to flint and steel. An exceptional white wine, with sculpted charm, showcasing citrus, lime zest, green apple, anis and sage. Harvest August 23 to 30, yields 37hl/h compared to 15h/h in 2022. |

WA 89-91 (4/2018): The Carbonnieux 2017 Blanc is scented of grapefruit and squeezed lemons with a touch of lime leaves and chalk dust. The palate is medium-bodied, crisp and clean with great intensity and a long racy finish.
VM 92-94 (5/2018): The 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc has an impressive bouquet with scents of Granny Smith apples, crushed stone and nettle. There is certainly impressive intensity here – a bouquet that means business. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity. This is one of the most sophisticated white Carbonnieux that I have encountered at this stage with wonderful mineralite and veins of ginger furnishing the finish that convey brio and confidence. This should evolve into an Outstanding Pessac-Leognan. Neal Martin.
JD 89-91 (4/2018): Notes of lemon curd, citrus rind and hints of crushed rock define the 2017 Château Carbonnieux, which is medium-bodied, pure, and elegant on the palate. It’s another great white from the Pessac-Leognan region in 2017.
JS 90-91 (4/2018): This is very salty and flavorful with sliced green apples, limes and green pears. Medium-bodied, layered and flavorful. Plenty going on here as always. Minerally. |

JS 96-97 (4/2018): This is a dense and beautiful DC with serious density and a fabulous layering of fruit. Phenolics are there but they melt into the wine already. Love the acid/fruit balance. A solid and serious white.
JD 95-97+ (4/2018): I was able to taste the 2017 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc on three separate occasions and it never failed to impress. It should match, if not exceed, the 2015. Gorgeous notes of lemon curd, mint, citrus, white peach, and salty minerality all emerge from this medium to full-bodied white. It doesn’t have the sheer scale or sexiness of a sunnier year, yet its purity is off the charts, it has riveting acidity, and a great, great finish. The blend is currently 70% Sauvignon and 30% Semillon, and it will spend 16 months on lees in 35% new French oak. Don’t miss it!
VM 93-95 (5/2018): The 2017 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc was picked from 31 August until 15 September via several tries through the vineyard that yielded 46hl/ha, with 13.5° alcohol. It has a very attractive, estuarine influenced bouquet with scents of cockle and oyster shell infusing the vivacious citrus fruit. This opens up very nicely with aeration in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. It feels quite saline and spicy in the mouth with a rather intense citric finish that is very persistent, the aftertaste again, quite saline. Neal Martin.
WA 91-93+ (4/2018): A tentative blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon, the 2017 Blanc opens with vibrant notes of freshly squeezed lemons, pink grapefruit and yuzu, accented by touches of lime zest and green apple plus a waft of crushed stones. Medium-bodied with lively acidity and super-intense, wonderfully expressive citrus flavors, it finishes long and chalky. |

JS 93 (4/2018): A dense and fresh white at the same time with cooked apples, lemon rind and minerals. Bright and vivid yet shows depth and seriousness. Phenolic and vivid. Hints of fresh herbs. Drink or hold.
VM 92 (5/2018): The 2017 Lynch-Bages Blanc is gorgeous. It is also quite unique, as the blend includes more Semillon than normal as a result of frost damage to some of the Sauvignon Blanc. I admit I am not usually a fan of the Blanc here, but the 2017 is terrific. Antonio Galloni.
JD 87 (4/2018): Checking in as a blend of close to 40% each of Semillon and Sauvignon, with the rest Muscadelle, the 2017 Blanc de Lynch Bages is a lightly colored, crisp, and easygoing white that offers notes of lemon curd, lime, and hints of minerality. It’s delicious and about as quaffable as it gets. |

JD 97 (2/2020): The 2017 Chateau Pape Clement Blanc showed spectacularly well and is one of the wines (if not the wine) of the vintage. Based on 55% Sauvignon and 45% Semillon aged 14 months in barrel, it offers powerful notes of honeyed melon, tart pineapple, green figs, and floral notes as well as a terrific sense of minerality. Concentrated, medium to full-bodied, with rocking levels of acidity, give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15 years or more.
JS 96 (12/2019): Aromas of pineapple, peaches and apple pie with stone. Deep and intense, yet always subtle in the nose. Full-bodied, layered and very flavorful. However, it stays focused and precise in the mouth and at the finish. Serious length. Still needs three or four years to come together. Better after 2022.
WA 94+ (3/2020): The Pape Clement 2017 Blanc (composed of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon) has loads of exotic fruit—pineapple, green guava and passion fruit—with crushed stones, fragrant herbs and mandarin peel hints. The palate is medium-bodied, intense and racy with a long, pure, exotic fruit finish.
VM 94 (3/2020): The 2017 Pape Clement Blanc is airy, weighty and so inviting. Hints of tangerine, passion fruit, white flowers and mint all lift from the glass. In the recent past, the Blanc has been oily and unctuous. There is plenty of textural depth to the 2017, but what impresses me most is its understatement and refinement. There is so much to like. | JD 98 (2/2020): Getting a big “Wow” in my notes, the 2017 Chateau Rieussec is an extraordinary Sauternes that has everything. Awesome notes of orange zest, honeyed flowers, ripe pineapple, peach, and spice all soar from the glass, and this beauty is already complex, has full-bodied richness and power, a great mid-palate, and a beautiful spine of acidity. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades or more. |

WA 97+ (3/2020): The 2017 Blanc prances out of the glass with pretty, cheerful scents of fresh green apples, lemongrass, lime leaves and white peaches plus spicy touches of fresh ginger, coriander seed and white pepper. Medium-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity and tension, with a racy backbone cutting through the tightly knit citrus and spice layers, finishing long and mineral laced.
JD 97 (2/2020): One of the whites of the vintage is the 2017 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc, which is based on 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 5% each of Sauvignon Gris and Semillon. Offering a huge, salty, mineral-laced bouquet of crushed lemons, acacia flowers, pineapple, and crushed rocks, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, racy acidity, a stacked mid-palate, and a crisp, chiseled, lengthy finish that keeps you coming back to the glass. It has the fruit and texture to drink nicely even today, yet my money is on it benefiting from 2-4 years of bottle age, and it should have over two decades of longevity.
JS 97 (12/2019): This is fabulous white with sliced apples, pears, stones, flint and light cream. Really incredible. Full-bodied, yet so tight and polished with superb finesse and density at the same time. A fantastic Smith white. A blend of 90% sauvignon blanc, 5% sauvignon gris and 5% semillon. Drink or hold.
VM 96 (3/2020): The 2017 Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Rich, voluptuous and creamy, the 2017 has so much to offer. Citrus peel, white flowers and mint are all generous in the glass. More than that, the 2017 offers an interplay of tension and textural opulence that is incredibly appealing. The blend is 90% Sauvignon Blanc, 5% Semillon and 5% Sauvignon Gris. Antonio Galloni. |

JS 99 (12/2019): This is a great Yquem, delivering thrilling purity and intensity. The nose offers intense aromas of fresh and dried apricot and peach pastry, as well as freshly baked creme brulee, candied and fresh orange and kumquat. Some marmalade, too. Smooth, glossy texture with flavors of grilled orange, dried apricot and an exceptionally long finish with a powerful, driving push to the end. A flicker of toasty-oak influence arrives late, but this wine has completely consumed the oak. The 2017 Yquem is a very powerful wine from a very rich and exceptional vintage. The acidity has a big hand in balancing the richness. Pithy finish. The phenolics deliver some great depth. Rain at the beginning of September prompted an extensive infection of noble rot. VM 97 (11/2019): The 2017 Yquem was tasted instead of the 2018 since owners LVMH no longer show the wine en primeur. This vintage has just been released onto the market and so I have included it in this report. The estate suffered no frost damage in 2017 and a warm period between May and July, 3° Celsius above average meant the vines' growth cycle was a month in advance. Then, 65mm of rain between 1 and 16 September was the catalyst for botrytis formation. The fruit was picked in two dry and warm windows between 26 September and 14 October, during which concentration came easily so that the bunches achieved even levels of ripeness. The vineyard team selected the best parcels to pick at 21 degrees potential alcohol and in a draconian measure, the rest was sold, some 50% of the crop. Winemaker Sandrine Garbay described it as "A vintage of puissance and richness." It has a charming and very pure bouquet with dried honey, acacia, apricot blossom and touches of crushed stone that gradually unfurls in the glass. The palate is viscous on the entry, beautifully balanced with impressive weight and substance, though sans the multi-dimensional complexity of the very greatest vintages. Honey, hints of lemongrass, marmalade and quince combine on the extremely harmonious finish that lingers. This is a seriously good Yquem. Neal Martin. |

JS 99 (12/2019): This is a great Yquem, delivering thrilling purity and intensity. The nose offers intense aromas of fresh and dried apricot and peach pastry, as well as freshly baked creme brulee, candied and fresh orange and kumquat. Some marmalade, too. Smooth, glossy texture with flavors of grilled orange, dried apricot and an exceptionally long finish with a powerful, driving push to the end. A flicker of toasty-oak influence arrives late, but this wine has completely consumed the oak. The 2017 Yquem is a very powerful wine from a very rich and exceptional vintage. The acidity has a big hand in balancing the richness. Pithy finish. The phenolics deliver some great depth. Rain at the beginning of September prompted an extensive infection of noble rot. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
