WA 94 (12/1992): Believe it or not, the 1990 Pommard-Les Rugiens is even richer than the 1990 Pommard-Les Epenots! It is a 25-40 year wine - a rarity in Burgundy. Also massively endowed, with port-like Pinot Noir fruit, this is a wine of extraordinary concentration, majestic stature, and prodigious potential for longevity. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2035+.

BH 92 (4/2015): This is quite ripe though it stops short of being surmature with its nose of plum liqueur, mocha, black cherry and earth aromas. There is exceptionally good richness to the very suave and succulent medium weight flavors that are supported by phenolically mature tannins on the mouth coating finish. This is a big and overtly powerful wine yet it's not especially rustic or austere. Drink 2024+. Outstanding!
VM 90 (3/2015): (these 2012s were bottled in September of 2014): Good dark red. Wild, very ripe aromas of raspberry, dried flowers and wild herbs. Dark berry flavors display a juicy character along with a note of chocolatey ripeness. An outperformer for this cru, finishing with substantial but tasty tannins and lovely persistence. I underestimated this wine last year.
WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Croix Noires has a feminine, quite elegant bouquet with scents of raspberry preserve, redcurrant jus and light mushroom scents. The palate is sweet and composed on the entry. There is a noticeable saline element to this Pommard that shows rigidity and structure towards the slightly clipped finish. |

VM 92-94 (2/2012): Good deep red-ruby. Black cherry, licorice and violet on the nose; smells deep. Very ripe and sweet, with firm spine to the flavors of black fruits and violet. The substantial sweet, fine tannins really melt into the finish. Conveys an almost chocolatey ripeness while maintaining excellent verve.
BH 91-94 (4/2012): (from an enormous 4.8 ha parcel with vines ranging from 50 to 65 years of age). A beautifully layered nose of purple fruit, violets and soil tones leads to exceptionally rich, velvety and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract that does a fine job of buffering the very firm but not hard tannic spine on the dusty and mocha-infused finish. This is a big but reasonably refined and well-balanced Epenots that is built for the long haul. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

This is also quite ripe yet retains a lovely freshness to the cassis, black cherry, lavender and warm earth scents. There is excellent power and volume to the concentrated, intense and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that culminate in an impressively long and balanced finish. This possesses both good power and superb length and is absolutely one to consider. Drink 2023+. Outstanding! |

VM 92+ (3/2014): Good bright red. Complex, ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, iron, minerals, spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The sweetest, supplest and most refined of these 2011s, offering lovely harmonious acidity to its red fruit, red licorice and mineral flavors. Really coats the mouth and vibrates on the long, firmly tannic finish, which features a late burst of ripe but lively red fruits. Winemaker Yves Confuron says the 2011s here have similar precision to the 2010s but more middle, although he believes that the wines have shut down following the September 2013 bottling.
BH 92 (4/2014): (from a 1.07 ha parcel in Rugiens-Hauts) There is really lovely complexity to the cool, restrained and elegant aromas of ripe red and blue pinot fruit and wet stone nuances that enjoy added refinement from the presence of dried floral elements though the stems are presently visible. There is a suave, round and sophisticated mouth feel to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that are shaped by firm and dense yet fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a mocha-inflected finish. This is an unusually ripe 2011 and interestingly it doesn't have the same level of complexity as the Epenots, or in any event not yet. Note well that plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2023+. Outstanding!
WA 89 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens ‘11 has quite an intense, slightly tinny bouquet with tart red cherries, orange zest and damp earthy aromas. The definition is quite impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with bold and assertive tannins and there is real weight in the mouth. It is endowed with plenty of oak, although there is as much fruit tannin as wood on the austere finish. Difficult to see which way this will head, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt and suggest giving time for it to coalesce. |

| BH 90 (4/2022): An exuberantly spicy and not quite as ripe nose blends slightly fresher notes of raspberry, black cherry and exotic tea. The wonderfully vibrant middle weight plus flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality on the palate drenching, very firm and moderately austere finish where a similar level of warmth slowly emerges. This bitter chocolate-inflected effort should age well but it's necessary to be tolerant of noticeable warmth. |

| BH 91 (7/2008): The nose has reached full maturity and offers up notes of game, some secondary fruit aromas and ample earth nuances that continue onto the rich, full and still nicely firm full-bodied flavors underpinned by moderate tannins and excellent length. This avoids any dryness on the finish as well as the sometimes green aspect that certain 1990s display on the nose. In sum, a lovely wine that has reached its apogee but one that should also hold for many years to come. |

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
