A distinguished, elegant and beautifully layered nose offers up notes of rose petal, anise, clove and red cherries. There is a beguiling purity to the refined mouth feel to the delineated middle weight flavors thanks to the abundant dry extract and fine-grained tannins that mold the mineral-inflected finish. Like the Chenevery this is not super vibrant but the density of the mid-palate and overall persistence is most impressive. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

| BH 91-94 (1/2014): (From a .27 ha parcel, most of which is young vines of 15+ years of age though there is a parcel approximating 15% of the total with <40 years of age, 50% whole cluster). There is a hint of tea-like nuances to the floral, spice, earth and sauvage notes on the broad-ranging dark berry fruit scents. The punchy and intense big-bodied flavors possess a subtle touch of minerality as well as fine concentration, all wrapped in a linear and wonderfully long finish. This isn't quite as ripe or complex but the length is seriously impressive. Note that patience will be required. Drink 2027+. |

| BH 93 (1/2022): An intensely floral-suffused nose speaks of equally cool aromas of red pinot fruit and a beautiful array of spice elements. There is terrific vibrancy to the dense and muscular but sleek medium weight plus flavors that possess lovely definition, all wrapped in a mouth coating, mineral-driven and powerful finale. This built-to-age and firm effort is finer, if not quite as dense, as the Chenevery but even so it is already more complete. Excellent though patience again suggested. Drink 2033+. |

| BH 91 (1/2013): Consistent with what one would expect from the 2003 vintage, the expressive nose is very ripe though not roasted and while not fully mature there are distinct secondary nuances along with the spicy and earthy black pinot fruit, cassis and plum scents. There is excellent mid-palate concentration to the attractively mineral-infused medium-bodied flavors that possess reasonably good verve and detail in the context of the vintage, all wrapped in a delicious, mouth coating and balanced finish. The supporting structure is partially resolved and for my taste this has largely arrived at its peak though I stress that this is one of those wines that will last another 50 years and thus there is absolutely no rush to drink up. That said, I'm not sure that it's necessarily going to improve dramatically from here even though the aromatic profile will certainly become more mature and perhaps more complex as well. A fine 2003 that is drinking well today and should continue to do so for years to come. Drink now+. |

WA 92 (8/2005): While slightly reductive, the 2003 Clos St.-Denis admirably displays its enormous concentration and depth of fruit. Copious quantities of dark berries are intermingled with notes of herbs, licorice, and red cherries in its complex, and lengthy character. Projected maturity: 2008-2017.
VM 90+ (4/2006): Good full, deep red. Musky, decadent aromas of red fruits, flowers, truffle and sweet oak. Concentrated, superripe and broad, with atypical weight for this cuvee Rather firm and unforthcoming today. Very horizontal on the finish, with fine tannins coating the palate.
BH 89 (1/2006): There is better freshness here with a nose of mocha and very ripe plum that leads to flavors that are fresh, intense and beautifully textured as the sap buffers the firm and ripe tannins. This is a big wine by the usual standards of Clos St. Denis with ample power and volume culminating in a palate staining finish and noticeable warmth. Drink 2013+. |

BH 88-91 (4/2005): A wonderfully seductive nose of plum and spicy black cherry framed in obvious wood lead to very earthy, sweet and intense, gorgeously complex medium full flavors and excellent length. The overall impression is not as elegant as that of the Couchereaux but there is perhaps more depth of material here. A choice. Outstanding! Drink 2013+.
VM 88+ (4/2006): Medium red. Nose shows an almost candied ripeness, with hints of licorice root and smoky oak. Densely packed, broad and dry, with notes of strawberry, underbrush and mushroom. This liqueur-like wine is still rather bound up, but I would like to have seen a bit more verve. |

| VM 93 (3/2006): Good deep red-ruby color. Black fruits, violet and pepper on the nose, with a suggestion of oak spice. Large-scaled, lush and vinous, with full but juicy flavors of dark berries and violet. This, too, boasts lovely restrained sweetness. A wine of huge phenolic material, with the dusty tannins coating the entire palate. Here's a 2003 that calls for a good decade of aging and may well evolve in bottle for 20 years or more. | Decanter 89 (9/2022): This wine was a bit of a disappointment. It feels washed out and lacking in ripeness – seemingly the antithesis of the Leroy style. The Bourgogne rouge is typically composed of declassified grapes from superior appellations – perhaps in 2003 the blend included grapes whose maturity was blocked by drought stress. The regional-level Bourgogne rouge from Maison Leroy commands a generous price given its status, and I confess that I don’t understand the logic in this particular instance. I would not advise further ageing on the strength of this example. (Drink between 2022-2027). |

Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
