Tasting Notes:
VM 93 (4/2007): Good deep red. Superripe, slightly decadent aromas of red cherry, leather and underbrush. Plush, fat and large-scaled; a full-blown expression of soil, with notes of smoke and game. This boasts extraordinary sweetness for the vintage, remaining just this side of over the top. Just a hint of nut skin on the finish. Very sexy wine.
BH 92 (1/2007): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). A stunningly complex mixture of earthy and animale red and black pinot fruit aromas lead to brooding, intense and jaw droppingly powerful and concentrated, chewy and complex flavors that possess a seriously long finish. There isn't quite the raw depth of the Clos St. Denis at this point but it's a very high quality '04. Drink 2015+.

WA 91-92 (6/2010): Blueberry fruit and citrus oils inform a surprisingly creamy yet also vivacious palate on Ponsot’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes, which displays a textural and tannic refinement; near creaminess; as well as bright length reminiscent of - yet going beyond - those exhibited by the corresponding village cuvee. Saliva-inducing salinity and suggestions of chalk add enticing and intriguing mineral dimensions, while star anise, black tea, and peat add a metaphorically dark aspect. This long-lined, energetic, exuberantly-finishing exemplar of its great site ought to be worth following for at least a dozen years.
BH 90-92 (1/2010): This is a very ripe yet wonderfully elegant '08 with an expressive and densely fruited nose of cassis and black cherry that introduces rich, full and equally serious flavors that are not as firmly structured as the Alouettes but more seductive and almost as long. This too is a fine effort and despite the high level of ripeness, it loses none of it Chambolle character. Drink 2016+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2011): A wonderfully elegant nose of notably ripe red cherry liqueur cut with wet stone and warm earth notes that can also be found on the utterly delicious, concentrated and sappy middle weight flavors that possess excellent depth on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Cuvee des Alouettes, I can't ever remember seeing a better vintage for this wine at this early stage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding!
WA 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes is an immediate wine. The aromatics alone are beautifully open and expressive. The fruit shows terrific delineation, depth and nuance with notable silkiness and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. |

BH 90-93 (1/2014): This is slightly riper with its black cherry liqueur-like aromas that are nuanced by hints of spice, sandalwood and anise. Here too there is a lovely sense of underlying tension and detail to the medium weight flavors that also evidence a subtle minerality on the notably longer and more complex finish. This is a relatively powerful vintage for this wine and I particularly like the sense of harmony and balance. (Drink starting 2020).
WA 89-91 (12/2013): The 2021 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande wafts from the glass with aromas of blackberries and minty cassis mingled with notes of violet, lavender, pencil shavings and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's beautifully seamless and complete, with a fleshy core of fruit, ripe acids and sweet, powdery tannins that assert themselves on the gently structured finish. This will offer a broad drinking window. It's one of the vintage's real successes, but it also represents only one-quarter of a "normal" production. |

| BH 93-95 (1/2011): Somewhat surprisingly, here the nose is even more elegant than that of the Griotte with its cool, airy and pure red cherry-liqueur, spice and essence of liquid minerality suffused nose that leads to dense, intense and equally mineral-driven big-bodied but refined flavors, all wrapped in a beautifully detailed, explosively long and youthfully austere finish. This is a serious and quite restrained effort that will require the better part of two decades to reach its full apogee. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 93 (8/2008): This has begun to shut down somewhat, particularly on the nose even with extended airing. However the mid-palate is intensely sappy and concentrated with gorgeously detailed flavors that offer knock out intensity, building slowly from the attack all the way to the explosive finish and lingers for minutes. As impressive as the wine is however, the structure has begun to assert itself and thus this will need another 6 to 10 or be at its best. Tasted twice recently with similar results. Try from 2014+. |

There is even more aromatic complexity with similar and brilliant red and black fruit notes though not the spice with superbly sappy, concentrated and very pure flavors that display flat out incredible length and impeccable balance. This will join the ranks of some of the best vintages of Ponsot's Clos de la Roche, which is saying something. It is however built for the very patient. Drink 2017+. |

VM 96 (5/2011): The 2008 Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is a silky, elegant wine. Freshly cut roses, dark red fruit and minerals sit on a core of utterly refined tannins. This shows stunning balance in a weightless style that gains energy on the clean, focused finish. This is a fabulous effort from Ponsot. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. Antonio Galloni.
BH 91 (4/2016): There is a subtle but certainly not invisible touch of brett to the otherwise cool, ripe and complex aromas of plum, red and dark berries, earth and plenty of spice nuances. There is both good volume and energy to the well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in an edgy and mildly drying finale. It's hard to know how much of the problem with the finish is attributable to the brett as often there is gas when there is brett which causes the supporting tannins to seem more prominent. My score is a compromise as this is not a bad wine but it's obviously not technically perfect. Moreover it's entirely possible that other bottles would show quite differently if there was no brett. I will have to try another bottle to see if the problem is limited to just this bottle or whether it's systemic. Try from 2023+. |

This, along with the Clos St. Denis, is the most complete wine in the range with mild reduction that isn't strong enough to completely block the spice, earth and game infused nose that introduces strikingly rich, naturally sweet and mouth coating flavors that explode on the formidably long finish. This is a classy wine with absolutely superb complexity, impeccable balance and almost uncanny presence, all delivered with grace and power. Be prepared to be patient however as this will need plenty of time. A 'wow' wine. Drink 2029+.

| BH 95-97 (4/2012): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). In stark contrast to the expressiveness of the Clos St. Denis, this is almost mute and even aggressive swirling liberates only the briefest glimpses of wild red berries and earth notes. There is superb size and weight to the imposing and overtly muscular flavors that also enjoy an incredible amount of dry extract that confers a supple and seductively textured mouth feel to the highly concentrated mid-palate. The presently buried tannins are intense and markedly firm though not hard on the explosively long finish that seems to go on and on. This should be something very special if given sufficient time to reach its apogee. Drink 2032+. |

| WA 95 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait. |

My sample is a blend of the two. It was picked on September 19–20. Like some of Ponsot’s other cuvees, it has a high-toned bouquet of cassis and violets, developing a hint of licorice with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and more tension than the other Grand Crus from the domaine. A sprinkle of white pepper and sage appears toward the finish. This should age well, though I would like more backbone and grip on the finish. Neal Martin. |

| BH 92-95 (1/2012): Deep ruby. A superbly multifaceted nose offers up nose of notably ripe black berry, plum and earth as well as hints of animale and underbrush. There is outstanding power to the very concentrated and serious large-scaled flavors that are underpinned by a dense layer of dry extract that does not completely buffer the exceptionally firm tannins as they too coat the mouth. This is an old school Clos de Vougeot that is positively Cistercian in its finishing austerity. I very much like this but I would only suggest purchasing it to those who have the forbearance to wait as this will definitely not be an early drinker. |

BH 92-95 (1/2015): (from a .90 ha parcel.) This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink 2028+.
WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively "conservative" Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

VM 88-91 (1/2019): The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Cuvee Allouette is the twin of the Montluisants Blanc from the bottom part of that vineyard. There are plenty of red cherries and cassis scents on the nose, which just needs a little more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and slightly chalky. On the final third of this wine, the terroir belatedly comes through with clarity. Fine. Neal Martin.
BH 88-90 (1/2019): (from the 1er portion of Monts Luisants; an alouette is a lark.) A cooler and more restrained nose evidences notes of red currant, spice, floral and plenty of earth influence. The supple, round and reasonably precise middle weight flavors exude a hint of minerality that also adds a touch of lift to the dusty if slightly drying finish. There is more density and power but it's not immediately clear if the finish will harmonize. Drink 2025+. |

It has a clean, precise bouquet of pastille-like blackberry and bilberry fruit, tightly wound at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, quite focused and very well balanced. This is an unassuming but effective Morey Village with a wonderful saline finish. Superb. Neal Martin.
BH 88-91 (1/2019): (from vines replanted in 2005 in the villages portion of Monts Luisants.) An equally fresh is somewhat more deeply pitched aromas consist of dark cherry, raspberry and whispers of violet and newly turned earth. The attractively vibrant medium weight flavors possess an almost creamy mid-palate along with a hint of minerality that adds a bit of lift to the delicious, balanced and refreshing finale. | WA 93 (4/2018): The 2015 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is excellent, opening in the glass with notes of golden orchard fruit, spring flowers, orange zest and hazelnut cream, gently framed by new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a glossy attack, superb concentration and an almost chewy sense of extract, its taut structural elements asserting themselves on the grippy finish. While this is marked by the warmth of the vintage it has the necessary energy and freshness to retain its balance. |

BH 91-93 (1/2006): The nose is slightly riper with spicy dark pinot fruit and earth notes leading to rich, sweet, round and powerful flavors packing plenty of punch and volume supported by a dusty and firm tannic spine that is completely buried beneath ample sap. This is impressive and a bit showier than the Clos de Vougeot just now. (Drink starting 2014).
VM 89-92 (3/2006): Medium red. Complex, aromatic nose combines currant and tobacco. Then suave and silky in the mouth, with lovely vinosity and cut. Very pinot in texture but not yet especially complex, conveying an impression of greater minerality and higher acidity than the Clos Vougeot. Today Lachaux prefers the Clos Vougeot. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 90-93 (1/2006): Here the nose is ever-so-slightly more elegant with a fruitier and more expressive quality with less earth and more red pinot fruit aromas though all the complexity and perhaps even a touch more. The flavors are classy, fine and wonderfully pure and crafted in a supple and perfectly balanced style that delivers outstanding length and striking intensity. As it usually is, this is a model of refinement and understated grace. (Drink starting 2012).
VM 90-92 (3/2006): Good red-ruby. Reticent, pure aroma of medicinal black cherry. Silky and suave on the palate but a bit more austere and reserved today than the Cailles. Lovely cherry and raspberry fruit is framed by minerality. This mounts slowly and impressively, coating the palate with flavor. When a Nuits-Saint-George wine is velvety like this one is, it's almost invariably Les Saint-Georges. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92+ (4/2007): Medium red-ruby color. Sappy, nuanced nose combines red cherry, fresh herbs and minerals. Wonderfully vibrant in the mouth, with sappy, sweet cherry and mineral flavors lifted by a note of cinnamon. This really coats the mouth with dusty extract. Conveys an impression of very even ripening. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. This strikes me as very Chambolle in style. This is more harmonious today than the Clos la Roche but will be even better with seven or eight years in the bottle.
BH 92 (1/2007): A more deeply pitched nose of dark and blue berry fruits laced with earth and a lovely and distinct violet note that is followed by very rich, dense and serious flavors that finish with noticeable austerity. As it usually is, this is a powerful wine that possesses huge length and is sufficiently well structured that it will require the better part of a decade to really open up and reveal its full, and considerable, potential. The best of these '04s. Drink 2014+. |

BH 86-88 (5/2006): A beautifully complex and obvious ripe nose of high-toned red berry fruit infused with obvious minerality merges into earthy, floral and raspberry liqueur-like flavors underpinned by firm and slightly dry tannins that are not quite as ripe. This would probably benefit from being fined. (Drink starting 2009). |

| BH 90 (1/2007): As one would expect, this is a bigger wine that offers a bit more aromatic complexity with attractive floral aromas of violets, earth and cassis that precede racy, edgy and powerful medium full flavors that are direct, indeed even rather linear on the borderline stern and presently austere finish. This is built to age and a wine that I doubt will be overly approachable young and thus moderate patience will be required. (Drink starting 2013). |

VM 93 (4/2007): Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume.
BH 92 (1/2007): A strikingly seductive nose of spice, hoisin and anise that adds nuance to the largely black pinot fruit aromas and continue onto the sappy, rich and mouth coating middle weight flavors that possess a bit more mid-palate fat and an explosive, fresh and harmonious finish. I particularly like the transparency here and this is an exceptionally stylish effort that will age gracefully but could actually be approached now with pleasure. Drink 2012+. Outstanding! |

BH 89 (3/2008): This reflects the elegance that can be found in Premeaux and the Mugnier touch only adds to this with a nicely complex and aromatically expressive nose that offers detailed and pure aromas of earth, black fruit and plum that dissolve into beautifully complex, refined and balanced flavors that also display ample finishing minerality and better overall phenolic ripeness. A really lovely effort that should age effortlessly and while this presently has a touch of forest floor on the nose, I suspect that it will pass in time. Try from 2012+.
VM 88 (4/2007): Good full red. Ripe aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Juicy and aromatic in the mouth, with more obvious ripeness and texture than the young-vines Clos des Fourches. The perfumed cherry flavor carries through to the floral finish, which features dusty tannins but avoids the dryness of the Clos des Fourches. As with the 2005 version, this strikes me as Nuits in a Chambolle style. |

VM 93 (4/2007): Good deep red. Superripe, slightly decadent aromas of red cherry, leather and underbrush. Plush, fat and large-scaled; a full-blown expression of soil, with notes of smoke and game. This boasts extraordinary sweetness for the vintage, remaining just this side of over the top. Just a hint of nut skin on the finish. Very sexy wine.
BH 92 (1/2007): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). A stunningly complex mixture of earthy and animale red and black pinot fruit aromas lead to brooding, intense and jaw droppingly powerful and concentrated, chewy and complex flavors that possess a seriously long finish. There isn't quite the raw depth of the Clos St. Denis at this point but it's a very high quality '04. Drink 2015+. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin.
BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

BH 96 (1/2007): This is also very cool and even more reserved at present, revealing only reluctant glimpses of very ripe and ultra spicy red and black berry fruit notes that are very pinot in character. The rich, full and powerful flavors are sweet, supple and utterly classy and the intensity this wine displays is seriously impressive and the superbly long and strikingly precise finish is crystalline in its purity and exactness. There is a rigorous element here that suggests this will require the better part of 15 years to be at its best but when it gets there, this is going to be a thrill ride. Readers know that I am not given to undue hyperbole but I love this style of wine as it's at once pure, understated, graceful and utterly composed. Drink 2019+.
VM 95+ (4/2007): Good deep red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and flowers. Like liquid silk on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle, offering great purity and nerve but hiding more than it's showing in the way of flavor today. This has a nearly frightful intensity and superb stony persistence. Due to hail in late August, the yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 25 in 2005, according to Millet. A highlight of the vintage. When I asked Millet to compare his 2004s to his 2001s, he told me that the acidity in the spine of the 2004s is barely tasteable, as the minerality of the wine dominates. "In comparison, the 2001s are gaining in sensuality and elegance," he said. "But their fresh fruit flavors are still fighting their acidity." |
