2004 Dom. de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Champans
Vintage: 2004
Region: Burgundy Red
Color/Type: Red
Size: 750 ML
Very Lightly Bin-Soiled Label
Tasting Notes:
VM 88-91 (3/2006): Medium red. Smoky red fruits and underbrush on the nose. Fat, full and sweet, with flavors of redcurrant and plum. Not more concentrated than the Mitans but possesses a bit more mineral spine. Slightly sauvage suggestions of leather and game. Stephen Tanzer. BH 87-89 (5/2006): A very gentle touch of wood frames ripe red pinot fruit, earth and background notes of iron and underbrush that introduce very ripe, round and rich medium full flavors that offer good vivacity and punch on the moderately long finish. The tannins do not have a high degree of phenolic ripeness yet there is no trace of astringency or undue dryness. (Drink starting 2010).

BH 91-93 (5/2011): Like the Taillepieds, this is also highly perfumed with rose petal, fresh red berries, wet stone and an earthy component that can also be found on the equally mineral-inflected, cool and pure flavors that evidence excellent detail and real verve on the delicious, intense and persistent finish. A lovely and understated Pommard of finesse. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029. VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

| BH 90-92 (4/2018): Today there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Taillepieds with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that flashes a hint of dryness though I doubt that it will last. Drink 2026+. |

| BH 91-93 (4/2020): Here too there is just enough oak influence to merit mentioning framing the elegant essence of poached plum, violet and soft spice wisps. | WA 93 (5/2011): The 2008 Pommard Rugiens captures many of the best qualities of the year. Layers of textured fruit emerge effortlessly from this mid-weight, gracious Burgundy. |

BH 91-94 (4/2017): This is also appealingly elegant with its pretty liqueur-like red pinot fruit, spice, sandalwood and subtle earth scents. The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors remains refined, lacy and focused with a lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly firmer finish. Lovely. VM 92-94 (1/2017): Good dark red. Subdued but precise aromas of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This beauty boasts a firm spine of acidity and finishes with lovely ripeness and lingering perfume. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

Excellent. |

| BH 89-92 (4/2004): Oddly, this is bigger, more serious and more powerful than the Champans with a broad aromatic spectrum of red and black fruits and obvious mineral notes merging seamlessly into dusty, precise and ultra pure middle weight flavors and a much firmer and more persistent backend. There is simply more material here with a buried yet noticeable tannic spine. A terrific wine of impressive balance. |

VM 87-90 (3/2006): Medium red. Deeply pitched aromas of cherry, chocolate and underbrush, with a faint peppery nuance. Fat, thick and sweet, with some superripe suggestions to the flavors of plum, redcurrant, raspberry and spices, but also a lightly herbal quality. Impressively round wine with terrific stuffing. Not hugely vibrant but undeniably fat and round, finishing with lush tannins and a note of underbrush. These degenerating vines produced fruit with 15% potential alcohol. This will give pleasure early. Stephen Tanzer. BH 86-88 (5/2006): A beautifully complex and obvious ripe nose of high-toned red berry fruit infused with obvious minerality merges into earthy, floral and raspberry liqueur-like flavors underpinned by firm and slightly dry tannins that are not quite as ripe. This would probably benefit from being fined. (Drink starting 2009). |

| BH 857-90 (4/2015): An intensely floral and spicy nose reveals notes of lilac, rose petal and cool red and blue pinot fruit aromas. There is a lovely sense of vibrancy and tension to the well-delineated and subtly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that poses a dusty, youthfully austere and ever-so-mildly dry finish. In much the same fashion as the Grèves the balance isn't perfect but this is still an interesting effort. |

| BH 89-92 (4/2016): In the same fashion as the Perrières there is quite a bit of wood and menthol character surrounding the otherwise fresh and pretty aromas of plum, spice and floral-scented nose. The intense and highly energetic middle weight flavors possess a discreet minerality and really lovely detail before culminating in a firm and mildly austere finish. This is a classic Mitans of delicacy and harmony. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2012): This is also exceptionally fresh, cool and bright and while the composition of the aromas is not dissimilar to that of the Mitans, here there is a noticeably greater emphasis on the mineral component. This minerality also defines the intense, delineated and highly energetic medium-bodied flavors that terminate in an explosive long and overtly austere finish. This stunning effort is a classic old school and completely textbook Taillepieds. Drink 2022+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

JM 92-95 (11/2018): All whole bunch, 55% new wood and a late malolactic fermentation here. Quite rich purple, with a lighter rim, raspberry fruit, the whole bunch effect is in support rather than too obvious. Firm fruit, comes up to the tannins at the back, Decent acidity, but a little lack of concentration, I thought. Brian says just more backward. But note that the quality of the fruit is up where it should be. VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is entirely whole cluster fruit matured in 50% new oak. It has a backward and reticent bouquet, yet one can tell there are coiled up black fruit here, mixed with raspberry coulis and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, slightly chewy tannin at first, grippy and assertive in style. Yet it manages to retain admirable balance with an engaging, quite saline, lightly spiced finish that fans out with style. Excellent. Neal Martin. BH 91-94 (4/2019): An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a pretty panoply of spice elements on the purple fruit and sandalwood-scented aromas. There is slightly better density to the tautly muscular and powerful flavors that exhibit fine length and depth. Once again this is not super-dense but even so it appears to possess outstanding development potential though note well that it will need plenty of time to realize it. Drink 2034+. |

WA 96-97 (6/2007): Vinified to mirror the regular cuvee and named for de Montille’s mother is a separate 2005 Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts “Christianne" from a half-hectare plot (easy to spot on any detailed vineyard map) that jumps the road and juts into the original La Tache. The result is a totally different wine - and what a wine it is! Subtle brown spices, jasmine, orange rind mingle with moss, mineral nuance, and black fruits. Raw red meat and savory soy notes emerge on the palate. This displays singular textural refinement and elegance, purity and clarity of fruit, and an ineffable complexity of mineral nuances from stem to stern. The billowing richness of folds of black fruits set up a harmonious, almost Riesling-like call and response with minerals. Explore the extraordinary mysteries of this wine beginning in 5-7 years, though one could well imagine it being worth holding for more than twice that time. VM 93-96 (4/2007): Good deep red. Deeply pitched, somewhat reduced nose hints at darker fruits. Then rounder, larger and deeper on the palate than the "regular" Malconsorts; distinctly spherical in shape, an impression that leavens the sheer size of this wine. Complicating notes of earth and vegetable matter. Finish very long and full, with great finesse of tannins. These vines are from an enclave in La Tache, and yet when I tasted these two samples blind, side by side, this one struck me as having the volume and complicating earth notes of Romanee-Conti while the "regular" Malconsorts was more La Tache-like in its early perfume and higher-pitched fruit. They were quite different in style. BH 92-95 (4/2007): This is just a flat out sexy and seductive wine with a wonderful panoply of spice nuances, including clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood and hoisin that continues onto the rich, velvety and mouth coating medium full flavors that drench the palate in sap and possess a beguiling mouth feel. Like the "regular" Malconsorts, this appears less structured than it really is at present because of the ample sève and impeccable balance. In sum, this clearly justifies having made a separate cuvee and should make for a wonderful 25+ year wine. Don't miss! Drink 2015+. |

WA 93-94 (12/2009): As described in detail in issue 171 de Montille's 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts - Christianne comes from a share of that cru which is clearly visible on vineyard maps as if it had been cut-out from (or juts into) today's La Tache. With a more exotic, musky, and effusive floral perfume; similar plum and raspberry fruit and smokiness; and more palate-staining concentration than the corresponding "regular" Malconsorts, this also carries more structure and a more vivid if hard to pin down mineral dimension. The finish here is positively tidal in its expansiveness and relentlessness. Where the other bottling has more 2006-tyical virtues, this "Christianne" could easily be taken for a 2005. It will never give chase to its own 2005 counterpart, but it should prove immensely rewarding to follow for 12-15 years. VM 93 (4/2009): Good full medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and Oriental spices. A step up in intensity over the foregoing 2006s; in fact, this is a real spice bazaar on the palate, with lovely sweetness and penetrating perfume intensified by very firm but harmonious acidity. Plenty of lurking stony minerality underneath. Finishes quite suave, with a solid spine of tannins and acids and captivating lingering perfume. BH 91-94 (4/2008): Here the slightly more elegant nose is even more floral as well as slightly spicier as well but otherwise, really quite similar, leading to rich, full, sweet and beautifully detailed and texturally, the mouth feel is slightly rounder as the tannins appear to be more completely integrated at this early stage, which confers a greater sense of harmony and overall balance. Lovely juice with Outstanding potential. Drink 2016+. Don't miss! |

| BH 93-95 (4/2020): As is often the case, this is aromatically quite similar to the regular cuvée though it is perhaps just a bit more elegant. The sense of elegance continues onto the equally well-delineated middle weight flavors that are shaped by slightly more refined tannins on the classy and impressively persistent finale. This is potentially outstanding and should age gracefully for years. |

| VM 91 (9/2018): Ripe stone fruits complemented by nutty nuances on the nose. Plush and fine-grained, with its stone fruit flavors currently overshadowed by nuts, earth and salty minerality. Rich and mouthfilling for young Corton-Charlemagne but I don't find quite the verve or grip shown by a barrel sample a year ago. Incidentally, the acidity here is 3.8 grams per liter, as with the Cailleret. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 93 (8/2021): The 2017 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru is nicely focused on the nose, becoming peachy with aeration, then revealing touches of beeswax and ripe clementines; then all of these scents ebb and allow the terroir to flood through. The palate is well balanced with nicely integrated oak, well-judged and plenty of salinity on the finish. This is a classy, quite mercurial Saint-Aubin that I look forward to revisiting with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Neal Martin. |

BH 91-93 (1/2006): The nose is slightly riper with spicy dark pinot fruit and earth notes leading to rich, sweet, round and powerful flavors packing plenty of punch and volume supported by a dusty and firm tannic spine that is completely buried beneath ample sap. This is impressive and a bit showier than the Clos de Vougeot just now. (Drink starting 2014). VM 89-92 (3/2006): Medium red. Complex, aromatic nose combines currant and tobacco. Then suave and silky in the mouth, with lovely vinosity and cut. Very pinot in texture but not yet especially complex, conveying an impression of greater minerality and higher acidity than the Clos Vougeot. Today Lachaux prefers the Clos Vougeot. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 90-93 (1/2006): Here the nose is ever-so-slightly more elegant with a fruitier and more expressive quality with less earth and more red pinot fruit aromas though all the complexity and perhaps even a touch more. The flavors are classy, fine and wonderfully pure and crafted in a supple and perfectly balanced style that delivers outstanding length and striking intensity. As it usually is, this is a model of refinement and understated grace. (Drink starting 2012). VM 90-92 (3/2006): Good red-ruby. Reticent, pure aroma of medicinal black cherry. Silky and suave on the palate but a bit more austere and reserved today than the Cailles. Lovely cherry and raspberry fruit is framed by minerality. This mounts slowly and impressively, coating the palate with flavor. When a Nuits-Saint-George wine is velvety like this one is, it's almost invariably Les Saint-Georges. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92+ (4/2007): Medium red-ruby color. Sappy, nuanced nose combines red cherry, fresh herbs and minerals. Wonderfully vibrant in the mouth, with sappy, sweet cherry and mineral flavors lifted by a note of cinnamon. This really coats the mouth with dusty extract. Conveys an impression of very even ripening. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. This strikes me as very Chambolle in style. This is more harmonious today than the Clos la Roche but will be even better with seven or eight years in the bottle. BH 92 (1/2007): A more deeply pitched nose of dark and blue berry fruits laced with earth and a lovely and distinct violet note that is followed by very rich, dense and serious flavors that finish with noticeable austerity. As it usually is, this is a powerful wine that possesses huge length and is sufficiently well structured that it will require the better part of a decade to really open up and reveal its full, and considerable, potential. The best of these '04s. Drink 2014+. |

| BH 90 (1/2007): Lower register and very earthy dark pinot fruit with game, spice and kirsch nuances complement the sauvage, brawny and sappy mouth coating full-bodied and muscular flavors that culminate in a wonderfully intense and frank finish. I very much like the depth here and there is good overall harmony plus in the context of the vintage, reasonably good phenolic ripeness. In sum, this is very Corton without being tough. BH 90-92 (1/2006): A ripe, spicy and serious nose of earthy black pinot fruit with a hint of espresso merges into supple, sweet, rich and mouth coating flavors that offer real volume and are forward, fine and generous yet there is real sense of class and grace here. This is unusually refined for Echezeaux yet it will be capable of at least two decades of age. Drink 2014+. VM 88 (4/2007): Full, bright red. Redcurrant, raspberry, dried flowers, mocha and nutty oak on the nose. Juicy, firm and penetrating, with mint and menthol nuances to the clean, tangy berry and oak flavors. Falls down a bit on the finish, which shows a dry, peppery edge. |

As it always is, this is a wine of evident class with a firm core of tannins yet the entire package is one of grace and harmony. (Drink starting 2011). |

This is equally stylish and classy though completely different with a stunningly complex and ultra floral nose combining spice, earth and dark pinot fruit aromas that continue onto the detailed, powerful and fantastically long flavors that stain the palate with almost painful intensity and sap. BH 95 (4/2006): Another step up in aromatic complexity with classic Vosne spice notes as well as the Asian spice cabinet notes associated with a fine RSV that add nuance to the potent mix of red and black pinot fruit aromas that merge into rich, mouth coating, concentrated and powerful flavors that put the attribute of class on parade. This is an exceptionally stylish wine with a richness and velvety quality that is incredibly seductive. Don't miss! Outstanding! Drink 2014+. VM 91 (4/2007): Good medium red. More fruity on the nose than the NSG, with complicating elements of smoke and musky game. This offers a lovely silky texture and compelling sweetness and stuffing for the vintage, with smoke and underbrush adding complexity to the wine's fruit. This has excellent material and finishes with suave tannins. |

| BH 90 (1/2007): As one would expect, this is a bigger wine that offers a bit more aromatic complexity with attractive floral aromas of violets, earth and cassis that precede racy, edgy and powerful medium full flavors that are direct, indeed even rather linear on the borderline stern and presently austere finish. This is built to age and a wine that I doubt will be overly approachable young and thus moderate patience will be required. (Drink starting 2013). |

VM 93 (4/2007): Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume. BH 92 (1/2007): A strikingly seductive nose of spice, hoisin and anise that adds nuance to the largely black pinot fruit aromas and continue onto the sappy, rich and mouth coating middle weight flavors that possess a bit more mid-palate fat and an explosive, fresh and harmonious finish. I particularly like the transparency here and this is an exceptionally stylish effort that will age gracefully but could actually be approached now with pleasure. Drink 2012+. Outstanding! |

BH 89 (3/2008): This reflects the elegance that can be found in Premeaux and the Mugnier touch only adds to this with a nicely complex and aromatically expressive nose that offers detailed and pure aromas of earth, black fruit and plum that dissolve into beautifully complex, refined and balanced flavors that also display ample finishing minerality and better overall phenolic ripeness. A really lovely effort that should age effortlessly and while this presently has a touch of forest floor on the nose, I suspect that it will pass in time. Try from 2012+. VM 88 (4/2007): Good full red. Ripe aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Juicy and aromatic in the mouth, with more obvious ripeness and texture than the young-vines Clos des Fourches. The perfumed cherry flavor carries through to the floral finish, which features dusty tannins but avoids the dryness of the Clos des Fourches. As with the 2005 version, this strikes me as Nuits in a Chambolle style. |

This boasts extraordinary sweetness for the vintage, remaining just this side of over the top. Just a hint of nut skin on the finish. Very sexy wine. BH 92 (1/2007): (the aggregate size of this holding is a whopping 3.4 ha and Ponsot is easily the largest holder in Clos de la Roche). A stunningly complex mixture of earthy and animale red and black pinot fruit aromas lead to brooding, intense and jaw droppingly powerful and concentrated, chewy and complex flavors that possess a seriously long finish. There isn't quite the raw depth of the Clos St. Denis at this point but it's a very high quality '04. Drink 2015+. |

VM 84 (6/2020): The 2004 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru offers light, smudged mulberry and decayed leaf scents on a nose that pales against Christophe Roumier’s other vintages. There is something quite Oriental about the aromas, (hoisin emerges with time) but also the greenness that I remember when I first tasted it from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannins. Quite a hollow Bonnes-Mares, to be frank, ending in a severely attenuated and raw finish. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London. Neal Martin. BH 90 (4/2007): A discreet hint of wood spice frames a potent mix of violet, red and black fruits, earth, herb aromas and hints of game that give way to textured, sappy, firm and intense flavors that are both serious and firmly structured. This will require time to come around though there is reasonably good phenolic ripeness and, in the context of the vintage, solid finishing power and pop. Drink 2012+. |

BH 96 (1/2007): This is also very cool and even more reserved at present, revealing only reluctant glimpses of very ripe and ultra spicy red and black berry fruit notes that are very pinot in character. The rich, full and powerful flavors are sweet, supple and utterly classy and the intensity this wine displays is seriously impressive and the superbly long and strikingly precise finish is crystalline in its purity and exactness. There is a rigorous element here that suggests this will require the better part of 15 years to be at its best but when it gets there, this is going to be a thrill ride. Readers know that I am not given to undue hyperbole but I love this style of wine as it's at once pure, understated, graceful and utterly composed. Drink 2019+. VM 95+ (4/2007): Good deep red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and flowers. Like liquid silk on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle, offering great purity and nerve but hiding more than it's showing in the way of flavor today. This has a nearly frightful intensity and superb stony persistence. Due to hail in late August, the yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 25 in 2005, according to Millet. A highlight of the vintage. When I asked Millet to compare his 2004s to his 2001s, he told me that the acidity in the spine of the 2004s is barely tasteable, as the minerality of the wine dominates. "In comparison, the 2001s are gaining in sensuality and elegance," he said. "But their fresh fruit flavors are still fighting their acidity." |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
