WA 92-93 (6/2010): Peat, wood smoke, leather, and soy in the nose of Chevillons’ 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles are joined and complimented by rich cherry and plum on the stubbornly gum-coating palate. A tart fruit skin edge; fruit pit piquancy; brown spices; chalky underpinnings; and saliva-inducing salinity all contribute to the invigoration and vibratory, lip-quivering intensity of a multi-faceted finish. There is certain handsome leanness here - bordering on austerity - but what a lot of energy as well! Lock some away for half a dozen years and expect it to perform impressively until at least age 18. VM 91-94 (4/2010): (racked in July) Deep, bright red. Superripe, complex nose melds berries, violet, damp earth and a whiff of balsamic vinegar. Wonderfully silky and suave on entry, then spicy and pure in the middle, with a very fresh black cherry flavor dominating underlying earth and floral notes. This spreads out impressively on the back end, with broad tannins saturating the palate. BH 91-94 (1/2010): (from a 1.12 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). The most complex array of aromas to this point with an airy, elegant and classy nose brimming with violets, anise, earth and red currant notes that complement to perfection the rich, full-bodied, generous and round medium weight plus flavors that explode onto the hugely long and powerful finish. A wine that manages to pull off the rare feat of being at once imposing yet highly refined. Drink 2017+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 92-94 (1/2013): As complex as the Pruliers is, the Les Cailles ratchets it up yet another notch with its spicy and pure blend of cassis, plum, violet and distinct iron-infused earth. There is excellent richness to the cool and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent focus on the explosively long finish. The tannins are dense but quite fine and this offers outstanding upside development potential. (Drink starting 2023). VM 0-93 (1/2013): Good full, bright red. Very ripe, deep nose offers pomegranate, cranberry and pungent crushed-stone minerality. Very rich and silky; a step up in density from the Pruliers. Thick and chocolatey but with very good lift and verve. Finishes with complex soil tones and serious tannins that will require five or six years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer. WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 2011 offers quite prominent and luscious (for the vintage) fruit on the nose with generous oak, however it is deftly integrated with the succulent, tart red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Again, I find that the oak is a little conspicuous, though underneath there is plenty of candied red fruit interlaced with orange peel and tangerine on the feminine, lithe finish. Give this two or three years in bottle and you will have a pretty Nuits Saint Georges. |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a focused bouquet of dark cherries with blueberry and briary touches and well-integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate delivers sappy blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine delineation and good grip. Quite spicy and peppery toward the finish. This is a vivacious Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of matière . Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. JD 93 (9/2021): Light to mid purple, there are some slightly herbaceous vegetal touches which should clear, and indeed they do to show ripe purple fruit with excellent clarity. There’s density and complexity, charcoal and chocolate, making an interesting complex wine. |

| VM 93 (12/2020): The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru was very closed on the nose despite encouragement, only reluctantly revealing dense black fruit, briar and melted tar aromas, plus a touch of tobacco right at the end. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fresh and saline, and that marine influence carries through to the structured, slightly gritty finish. Rough around the edges at the moment; give this 4–5 years before broaching. Neal Martin. |

| BH 92-95 (1/2024): An ultra-fresh nose exhibits an airy array of essence of red cherry, cranberry and lavender that is trimmed in noticeable but not intrusive wood. The cool, pure and equally fresh medium weight flavors possess terrific vibrancy along with first-rate delineation on the refined, focused and youthfully austere finish that delivers sneaky good length. The innate class of a fine Cailles is clearly present and I very much like the overall sense of harmony. If you can find it, buy it. Drink 2034+. |

A spicy nose offers a subtle step up in aromatic elegance with its very fresh nose of black raspberry and soft earth hints. WA 90-93 (1/2023): The 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots is very pretty, bursting with aromas of red berries, coniferous forest floor, peonies and spices. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with lively acids and beautifully refined tannins, it will offer a broad drinking window. BH 90-93 (1/2023): As is usually the case, the expressive nose is quite spicy, indeed blind this could aromatically pass for a Vosne with its pretty plum, dark berry and exotic tea scents. The rich and quite generous yet refined and pure medium-bodied flavors exude a subtle minerality on the bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. Lovely and understated. (Drink starting 2029). |

BH 91-93 (1/2010): (from a .60 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). An elegant, pure and stony cool red berry fruit nose laced with earth and underbrush nuances, both of which can also be found on the beautifully detailed and strikingly complex flavors that culminate in a long and linear finish. In a word, terrific. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 89-91 (4/2010): (racked in July) Bright, full deep red. Less fruit and more smoke and stony minerality on the nose. Ripe and broad, with little easy sweetness to the mineral and soil flavors. This builds impressively and gains in complexity on the long finish, and will need a good five years of cellaring. WA 89-90 (6/2010): Ripe dark cherry purple plum; nut oils; pungent green herbs; and smoky black tea scent and flavor the Chevillon 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Perrieres, which features chalky underlying suggestions that true-believers will associate with its site, as well as a prominence of tannin that will encourages 3-5 years’ wait before enjoying. Cherry pit piquancy further enhances this palpably dense Pinot’s rather austere side, but there is overriding vintage-typical juicy brightness to spare in its sustained finish. I suspect ultimately this will merit following for 10-12 years. |

VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry and boysenberry. Slightly high-toned, smooth and dense in the mouth, with sweet, sappy, energetic black fruit flavors dominating. The substantial fine-grained tannins arrive late, spreading out to saturate the sides of the tongue. This seriously concentrated wine finishes impressively long and slightly tight. I can't recall ever scoring Chevillon's Pruliers higher from barrel. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A restrained and discreetly earthy nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that are set off by a moderate lashing of wood. The broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors possess a sleek muscularity along with excellent power, all wrapped in a rustic, austere and backward finish. As is usually the case, this is the most obviously Nuits in character among the Chevillon wines and like the Perrières, it demands considerable patience but it's virtually always worth the wait. BH 90-93 (1/2006): Here the nose is ever-so-slightly more elegant with a fruitier and more expressive quality with less earth and more red pinot fruit aromas though all the complexity and perhaps even a touch more. The flavors are classy, fine and wonderfully pure and crafted in a supple and perfectly balanced style that delivers outstanding length and striking intensity. As it usually is, this is a model of refinement and understated grace. (Drink starting 2012). VM 90-92 (3/2006): Good red-ruby. Reticent, pure aroma of medicinal black cherry. Silky and suave on the palate but a bit more austere and reserved today than the Cailles. Lovely cherry and raspberry fruit is framed by minerality. This mounts slowly and impressively, coating the palate with flavor. When a Nuits-Saint-George wine is velvety like this one is, it's almost invariably Les Saint-Georges. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (12/2009): Ethereal, distilled kirsch and framboise notes in the nose of Chevillon 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges usher in a liqueur-like palate display, mingling sweet dark berries with marzipan, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, peat, and crushed stone. This displays a more roasted richness than other Chevillon 2006s, along with a sheer sweetness of fruit that seem to typify this site in the vintage, rendering it far more youthfully accessible than normal. That said, it by no means lacks for mineral or for roasted, meaty dimensions, and I imagine it will be worth following for at least a dozen years. The underlying tannic structure is present, simply swathed in what I anticipate to be a more than ample and renewable concentration of fruit. This beauty merits following for a dozen or more years. VM 91-94 (4/2008): Good ruby-red. High-pitched, pristine nose offers raspberry coulis, minerals and fresh flowers. Wonderfully fine-grained and sweet but with a medicinal reserve today. This very rich, superripe wine offers insinuating intensity. Its superb underlying fat is hidden by tangy acidity and firm structure. Finishes very sweet, stylish and long. An Outstanding showing, and a classic example of this vintage at its best. BH 91-93 (1/2008): (from a .60 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). Here the equally elegant fruit profile runs more to the red side of the spectrum though it is perhaps not quite as complex yet the rich, round and stylish flavors are actually more complex with a delicious, powerful and seriously long finish that packs a real punch. A wine that should mature well over the medium term. Drink 2014+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 94-95 (4/2007): Of all the Chevillon wines, their 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains - like their Cailles and Les St.-Georges, from roughly 80-year-old vines - displays the greatest density, stoniest minerality, most piquant nuttiness, and deepest, darkest, blackberry and beet root “fruit" character. The overall impression is breath-taking in its sheer concentration, yet rather somber and brooding in personality, with an emphasis on piquancy, bitterness and stoniness. Toasted walnut and hickory, cherry pits, black chocolate, stones, and charred meat inform this wine’s powerful, penetrating finish. Were it not for a persistent primary blackberry juiciness and the great refinement of its abundant tannins, this would border on the hyper-concentrated. If further proof were needed that the Chevillons are in a class by themselves among the major Nuits-St.-Georges landholders, they certainly delivered it this year. Like so many other vintners, they reported backing off on pigeage this year - and heaven knows, the resultant wines don’t lack for concentration. Their Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Bourgogne, and Nuits-St.-Georges Les Perrieres had all just been sulfured and filtered, so Bertrand Chevillon declined to show them. He was as yet noncommittal, however, about when the other wines would be bottled, although this would probably continue through Spring, and be accompanied by the estate’s usual light filtration. VM 91-94 (4/2007): Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and leather; a bit less minerally and floral than the Saint-Georges. Powerful, brooding and large-scaled on the palate but currently locked up tight and showing less sweetness than the Saint-Georges. But this big boy really saturates the palate. With its serious tannic clout and leathery soil tones, this is classic Nuits-Saint-Georges. BH 91-94 (4/2007): This is particularly ripe yet the nose is fresh and expressive with its dark raspberry fruit, earth, violet and slightly sauvage notes but the big, robust and amply muscled flavors are brooding to the point of being intensely primary and borderline backward. This is the most structured wine of the range but there is so much extract that the tannins are almost completely buffered, which will permit a long if slow evolution. This is a dramatic effort that isn't quite as classy as the Les St. Georges or Les Cailles but it is likely to be the last wine standing as it were some decades hence. Drink 2017+. Sweet spot Outstanding! |

WA 94 (12/2009): Cassis and black raspberry take on both liqueur-like richness and distillate-like high tones in the Chevillon 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains - analogous to the expression of ripeness in other wines of this collection. And here, too, the roasted sense of low-toned richness suggests chocolate and peat, while bitter notes of fruit pit and iodine add welcome contrast and further basis for fugal interchange of flavors in a long, intensely concentrated finish. On the one hand, this seems more embryonic than its fellow crus, but on the other hand its opulence and interplay of flavors are already utterly seductive and intriguing. In any case, however much of this one acquires, it would be foolish not to stretch those bottles out over a dozen or more years. VM 92-95 (4/2008): Bright, deep ruby-red. Aromas of dark berry liqueur and bitter chocolate are sappy and liqueur-like but with Outstanding energy. Quite full and powerful for a wine from this cellar, with Outstanding sweetness and breadth to its flavors of blackberry, chocolate and roast coffee. Downright explosive on the finish, the noble tannins totally buffered by a wave of fruit. BH 91-94 (1/2008): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel). A brooding and much more reserved nose is densely fruited with notes of plum, blueberry, earth and a subtle sauvage hint that mouth coating and impressively concentrated flavors that positively explode on the gorgeously long finish. As it always is, this is a big and powerful wine yet with a bit more elegance than usual. Terrific and potentially the class of the range in 2006. Drink 2016+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a fresh, tertiary nose with perhaps just a touch of brettanomyces, though it opens nicely with aeration, a pleasant ferrous element coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with sappy red berry fruit, fine delineation and a prudent sprinkling of white pepper toward the finish. This is a well-crafted Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of personality. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2023-2042). Neal Martin. BH 92-94 (1/2019): Relatively generous wood fights a bit with the otherwise cool and pure aromas of extract of cassis, plum, humus, earth and suggestions of the sauvage. As is usually the case chez Chevillon, this is a very powerful wine with imposing size and weight with fine mid-palate density thanks to the abundant dry extract that also helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine that really emerges on the beautifully long finale. (Drink starting 2033). WA 93-95 (1/2019): As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and concentrated, with imposingly broad shouldered structure and a deep, reserved core. Again, patience will be required and rewarded. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2020): The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru matches Chevillon’s Les Saint-Georges pound for pound in terms of intensity and precision, offering brambly black fruit, crushed rock, tangerine and raspberry preserve scents that blossom with aeration. The medium-bodied palate features very supple tannins and pitch-perfect acidity, although perhaps at the moment the Les Saint-Georges demonstrates more complexity and terroir expression toward the finish. The Vaucrains is more introspective and remains a little aloof on the finish (at least for now). One for the cellar. Neal Martin. |

| VM 87 (12/2021): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Village has a light, quite earthy bouquet, fresh and vibrant. WA 89-91 (1/2023): Aromas of red berries, orange zest and rose petals introduce the 2021 Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes, a medium-bodied, fleshy and perfumed wine with melting tannins and a saline finish. It's an especially charming, fragrant rendition of this perennially reliable cuvée. BH 89-91 (1/2023): A more deeply pitched nose offers up its notes of various dark berries, cool earth and a hint of crushed fennel. The rich, delicious and more voluminous medium weight flavors possess notably better depth and persistence if also more evident rusticity. This is a very good Nuits villages and worth considering. (Drink starting 2027). |

| VM 94 (2/2009): Good deep red. Knockout nose offers superb clarity and lift to the aromas of black raspberry, peppery spices, minerals, smoky herbs and blood orange. Wonderfully dense yet somehow weightless, showing Outstanding floral lift to its sappy, tangy raspberry, mocha and pepper flavors. This spreads out to saturate the palate on the gripping, very long finish. A wonderfully suave example of this grand cru. |

BH 92 (4/2008): A bit surprisingly, this is even more elegant than the Suchots with a pure and gorgeously spicy nose that features notes of hoisin, clove, cinnamon and soy that complements perfectly the supple, refined and focused medium-bodied flavors that possess a sleek muscularity on the strikingly long finish. This is a beautifully seductive effort that actually is slightly longer than the Suchots but doesn't quite have the same level of dry extract. A choice. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (4/2008): Good dark red. Hints of smoke and licorice on the rather laid-back but wild nose. Round, rich and deep, showing more weight but less early sex appeal than the Suchots. Best today on the lush, expanding back end, which features roast coffee and underbrush nuances and suggestions of very ripe fruit. This is still a baby. Prost notes that the berries here are always very ripe, but that the Suchots fruit comes in with firmer skins and normally makes a fresher style of wine. The Malconsorts, he says, shows deeper earth tones. WA 89 (12/2009): The Bouchard 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts emphasizes the bitter side of bitter-sweet black fruits and herbs, which mingle with meat stock on a firm and for the vintage surprisingly substantial palate. Here is another slightly austere but impressively persistent Pinot in the present collection, and one that deserves to be revisited in 2010. I suspect it will merit following for 5-6 years. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from 50+ year old vines.) There is ample dry extract here and this should age very well as it's both balanced and blessed with impressive raw materials. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! |

VM 90+ (3/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, smoked meat, mocha and underbrush on the soil-inflected nose. Lush, broad and sweet, with noteworthy complexity of flavor. A substantial wine that finishes with serious tannins. Needs at least five to seven years of patience. WA 91 (12/2009): The tender, ripe cherry fruit; marrowy, clean meatiness; and subtle creaminess of its immediate palate impact mark the Dujac 2006 Charmes-Chambertin as a contrast with the corresponding Combettes. Vanilla and licorice add allure. This lives up to its name until a point where some faintly drying tannin creeps into its finish. That said, it should prove memorably perfumed and delicious in the proper contexts over the next 4-5 years. BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from both Charmes proper and Mazoyères). This is shut down tight with thick reduction blocking any reasonable evaluation of the nose though the relatively big and weighty flavors are concentrated, serious and solidly structured. This seems quite promising as the underlying material is impressive but note that this will not be a precocious example of Charmes. Drink 2016+. |

VM 93+ (4/2009): Good deep red-ruby. Musky, meaty nose is dominated today by chocolate and minerals; lower-pitched than the Clos-Saint-Denis. Fat and sweet in the mouth, with an almost liqueur-like ripeness and wonderful silky depth. Offers compelling sweetness if not quite the detail of the Clos-Saint-Denis. Finishes with a boatload of chewy, granular tannins. Not especially perfumed today but this has the size of a 2005. BH 93 (1/2009): Here there is terrific aromatic depth with a gorgeous mix of red and dark berry fruit, spice, earth, game, underbrush and a subtle minerality that can also be found on the rich, full, sweet and intense big-bodied flavors brimming with buckets of dry extract on the mouth coating, long, powerful and utterly stunning finish. This is a big 2006 yet the focus, balance and sense of harmony are riveting. Drink: 2018+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2008): A completely backward but superbly complex nose displays layered aromas that run to game and underbrush as well as ripe red and dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of wood toast that give way to rich, sweet and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of muscle and real volume on the explosive, textured and sappy finish that is impressively concentrated and wonderfully long. There is ample structure here as well though it's largely buffered by all of the mid-palate extract and I particularly like the depth. A serious wine that will live for decades. Drink 2021+. Don't miss! VM 92+ (4/2009): Bright medium red. Captivating but reduced aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, dried flowers and spices. Juicy and vibrant but youthfully unforthcoming, offering excellent energy and grip to its intense raspberry, spice and stone flavors. Best today on the very long, lively aftertaste, which features substantial dusty tannins and terrific architecture for aging. I would not be surprised if this merited a score in the mid-90s a decade from now. |

Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Petits Monts |

WA 92 (12/2009): The Foreau 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Petits Monts delivers a melange of red and black currant with bright, bitter-sweet and tart flavors that are complimented by a savory, saline suggestion of maritime minerality, soy, peat, and marrowy meatiness. Firm tannins preclude any outright sense of richness – let alone fat – at this stage in its evolution, but there is impressively sappy persistence here and a dynamic sense of interaction with mineral and carnal nuances. I would plan to revisit this in a couple of years, and anticipate at least 6-8 years of satisfaction. BH 91 (1/2009): A reserved mix of fresh and spicy floral and very ripe dark berry fruit aromas trimmed in a bit of toasty oak combines with nicely detailed and relatively round flavors that possess excellent intensity, detail and minerality on the moderately wood influenced finish. This doesn't quite have the sheer depth of the Les St. Georges but it is very Vosne as well as serious, complex and the amount of extract here is impressive all the same. Recommended. (Drink starting 2014). |

VM 93+ (4/2009): Good bright, dark red. Briary blueberry nose shows a captivating crushed-fruit urgency. Wonderfully energetic and pure in the mouth, with pristine flavors of cassis and blueberry. Extremely primary wine-and more powerful than the 2007. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and palate-saturating perfume. BH 90-93 (1/2008): This too carries subtle wood toast coupled with a bit of wood spice that sets off the layered black fruit and slightly sauvage notes that are clearly picked up by the rich, full, muscled and notably powerful flavors that seemed less structured than they really are because of the velvety mouth feel and huge length. This is very fresh and energetic yet there is the classic young Bonnes Mares reserve which suggests that this will require the better part of a decade to reach full maturity, indeed perhaps even a bit longer. Drink 2014+. |

VM 93 (4/2009): Bright dark red. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco, minerals and coffee. Lush, silky and sweet; youthfully reticent in the mouth but already offers an ineffably complex perfume. Boasts impressively fine, late-arriving tannins for the vintage. The wine's firm acid/tannin spine gives the finish excellent bite. A beauty. BH 90-92 (1/2008): Here there is a bit more obvious wood spice, mixed espresso and sexy black and blue fruit aromas that merge into rich, full and velvety medium-bodied flavors that are concentrated and textured with another dimension of complexity on the admirably long finish that also evidences a trace of toast. Drink 2013+. Sweet spot Outstanding! |

VM 91 (4/2009): Good bright red. Musky black raspberry, stone, licorice, menthol and brown spices on the nose. Tight but fairly pliant, with a distinctly briary fruit character complicated by stone and menthol. This rich, structured wine finishes with serious building tannins and excellent length. WA 91 (12/2009): Sweet, pure, fresh cherry and lingonberry along with correspondingly high-toned distilled fruit suggestions on the nose and palate of Groffier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers mingle with maritime salinity for a richly-ripe yet invigorating and refreshing display. This has the tenderness of tannin and relatively elegance of which its vintage is memorably capable, yet there is fat and structure in reserve, I suspect, for a decade's worth of satisfying evolution. Notes of chalk and char add intimations of an evolving mineral and carnal dimension to the finish. BH 89-91 (1/2008): (40+ year old vines and 20% new wood). A noticeable if discreet touch of wood toast frames more deeply pitched and slightly riper dark and blue berry fruit aromas that complement the rich, full and round flavors that also possess an attractive mouth feel on the precise, intense and persistent finish. As befits its position below Bonnes Mares, this is slightly firmer with more evident minerality. Also worth considering. Drink 2013+. |

VM 96 (4/2009): Bright, full red. Vibrant but brooding nose shows a medicinal austerity to the pungent aromas of raspberry, flowers and botanical herbs. Penetrating, high-pitched and brilliantly delineated, with uncanny energy and lift to the red berry, floral and mineral flavors. This saturates every square millimeter of the palate, then explodes with perfume on the expanding aftertaste. The overall impression is of pure soil-driven energy in a rather uncompromising style, but when I drank the second half of my bottle two days later with food, it showed a deep cherry flavor and compelling sweetness. Splendid Clos de Beze. WA 95 (12/2009): The 2006 Chambertin Clos de Beze is in another league from Jadot's other 2006 vintage Chambertin grand crus, or for that matter any wines that went before it in that collection. A complex and classic Clos de Beze nose of rose petal, black raspberry, peat, licorice, dark chocolate, and smoked meats leads to a correspondingly multi-faceted palate of silken textural refinement, underlain by savory, saline minerality. In the best manner of the vintage, this marries soothing and invigoration, concentration and elegance, finishing with lift and refinement as well as riveting, vibratory interplay and extraordinary reach. It should be exciting to plug into a bottle of it anytime over the next 15 years, if not longer. BH 94 (4/2009): Here the nose is as reserved as the Latricières and only grudgingly gives up glimpses of the spicy and earthy red pinot fruit nose that is quite cool with obvious minerality, which continues onto the textured, intense and nervy big-bodied flavors that are textured and classy with highly sophisticated tannins on the long finish. Despite the reserved character of the nose, I was very pleasantly surprised at the relative accessibility this already displays due to the ample buffering sap yet make no mistake, the '06 Bèze will successfully age for years. A knockout that is noticeably better in-bottle than it originally showed from cask. Drink 2018+. |

Fat, broad and deeply spicy, with noteworthy depth of flavor and a tactile mouth feel. At once mouthfilling and vibrant; seamless and lively. The very long finish features thoroughly enrobed ripe tannins and vibrant spicy persistence. It will be fascinating to compare this with the 2007 version in six or seven years. WA 91+ (12/2009): The Lafarge monopole 2006 Volnay Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs leads with ripe yet tart-edged cherry and red currant; takes on a bitter-sweet cast as licorice and cherry pit intervene on the palate; and retains a refreshing cast even as it caresses with silken texture. Mineral, tea-like, and gamey shadings are lingering in the shadows rather than engaging in intercourse with the fruit, but I'm left wondering whether the relative absence of dynamic here is a a function of the wine's temporary state or of an inherently relatively reticent personality. Certainly one will be able to derive at least a decade of satisfaction from this and - based its track record - longer for those fascinated by wine's life beyond middle-age. |

BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from a .45 ha parcel of 70-year-old vines). A very ripe, pure and expressive nose of spicy red and black fruit aromas nuanced by hints of game, smoke, tea, leather and lovely violet notes framed in moderate wood combines with sappy, dense and naturally sweet full-bodied flavors that possess a really seductively suave texture and a supple but precise finish that is both profound and hugely long. This is a knockout where the only nit is a trace of finishing warmth but otherwise, I was extremely impressed as this is stylish and utterly classy. Drink 2014+. Don't miss! WA 90 (12/2009): Fascinatingly sweetly smoky and mineral suggestions of machine oil, metal shavings, and crushed stone mingle with ripe black raspberry and chocolate in the nose of Meo's 2006 Corton Clos Rognet. Like its Clos Vougeot sibling, this is rather massive at least in its youth and its tannins are quite evident, probably all the more so due to the wine's extreme sense of softness (from high pH) and faintly noticeable alcohol. But sheer richness and sweetness render this impressive in its way, and time in bottle may make for refinement and nuance. I would not plan to revisit this before 2011 and anticipate at least a decade's total useful life. |

| BH 88 (6/2008): A background hint of wood frames the fresh and relatively high-toned red pinot fruit that complements the round, supple, detailed and vibrant middle weight flavors that are delicious, minerally and energetic though I would be inclined to drink this for its fruit as there is the barest touch of a finishing edge that suggests that this may dry out with too much time in bottle. WA 93-94 (12/2009): As described in detail in issue 171 de Montille's 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts - Christianne comes from a share of that cru which is clearly visible on vineyard maps as if it had been cut-out from (or juts into) today's La Tache. With a more exotic, musky, and effusive floral perfume; similar plum and raspberry fruit and smokiness; and more palate-staining concentration than the corresponding "regular" Malconsorts, this also carries more structure and a more vivid if hard to pin down mineral dimension. The finish here is positively tidal in its expansiveness and relentlessness. Where the other bottling has more 2006-tyical virtues, this "Christianne" could easily be taken for a 2005. It will never give chase to its own 2005 counterpart, but it should prove immensely rewarding to follow for 12-15 years. VM 93 (4/2009): Good full medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and Oriental spices. A step up in intensity over the foregoing 2006s; in fact, this is a real spice bazaar on the palate, with lovely sweetness and penetrating perfume intensified by very firm but harmonious acidity. Plenty of lurking stony minerality underneath. Finishes quite suave, with a solid spine of tannins and acids and captivating lingering perfume. BH 91-94 (4/2008): Here the slightly more elegant nose is even more floral as well as slightly spicier as well but otherwise, really quite similar, leading to rich, full, sweet and beautifully detailed and texturally, the mouth feel is slightly rounder as the tannins appear to be more completely integrated at this early stage, which confers a greater sense of harmony and overall balance. Lovely juice with Outstanding potential. Drink 2016+. Don't miss! |

Bonnes Mares Grand Cru |

BH 92 (1/2009): (50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the '50s; the vines are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches but there is a slight majority in the latter.) Here the nose actually quite resembles that of the Fuees though the fruit spectrum is slightly more deeply pitched and runs slightly more toward the bluer end with just the barest trace of herbal while sliding gracefully into powerful and impressively broad-scaled flavors that are rich, full, sweet and textured, underpinned by ample minerality on the focused, detailed and solidly long finish. Mugnier agreed with me that this vineyard appears to be hitting its stride as of late and while not quite as good as he would like to see, certainly better than it was only a few years ago. Drink 2016+. WA 93-94 (12/2009): Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Bonnes Mares – which I was unable to re-taste after bottling – smells strikingly of boysenberry and blueberry, accompanied by bittersweet, high-toned herbal concentrates, black tea, crushed stone, and peat. In the mouth this is velvety yet displays invigoration of tart fruit skin, cardamom, white pepper, and mineral impingement, as well as uncanny lift, and its pure blue fruits are transparent to myriad finishing nuances. This shares with the corresponding 2005 its density, dark mystery, and stony mineral depth, but practically crackles with static electric energy and boasts mysteriously levitational length. I see no reason to defer the pleasure of its company, but at the same time this impeccably balanced and refined version of its cru should be worth following for at least 12-15 years. VM 93 (3/2009): (from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring. |

WA 92 (12/2009): Peat, black tea, game, mint, crushed stone, and dark berry aromas rise in at once sinister and enticing profusion from the glass of Mugnier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Corresponding low-toned complexity characterizes the opulently-textured and caressing, bittersweet palate. Stony minerality proves the most tenaciously aspect of this dark beauty's long, soothing, yet almost brooding finish. It sent chills back up my spine just transcribing my tasting note and recreating this wine's uncanny, hard-to-describe character. I suspect it will be worth following for ten or a dozen years, probably longer. The track record at this address is more than merely convincing. VM 92 (4/2009): Bright, dark red. Fresh, complex nose melds musky raspberry, smoky minerality, brown spices, mocha and underbrush. Lush and fat with fruit; in fact, this is amazingly opulent for 2006 but almost magically weightless. Finishes very long, sweet and perfumed, with substantial fine tannins and notes of game and spice. Very impressive. BH 92 (1/2009): (from 50+ year old vines - this is Mugnier's favorite vineyard in terms of its fruit quality) This too is notably ripe yet airy with a mix of dark pinot fruit and violets that merge into fresh, racy and more mineral-infused medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced, sweet and impressively deep finish sporting plenty of energy. This too is very Chambolle, light on its feet with fine tannins and beautiful transparency. Recommended. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! |

VM 96+ (3/2009): Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-96 (12/2009): Cassis, blackberry, licorice, vanilla, smoky black tea, and lily perfume wafting from the glass of Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Musigny seduce the senses. The sheer sappy, palate-staining bittersweet fruit concentration here is remarkable, with the wine's strong undertone of wet stone seemingly acting as a sounding board. This displays an uncanny combination of sheer density with reverberative, vibrant energy and buoyancy that are consistent with the best wines of this vintage, but that this wine displayed to a considerable extent in 2005, too. This is one to cherish for the next 15-20 years. BH 95 (1/2009): A gorgeously elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and notable complexity introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused finish. This dances on the palate yet it is forceful with excellent finishing drive and intensity on the explosive and hugely long, slightly austere finale. This is one of those 'wow' wines as well as one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2018+. |

BH 90 (1/2009): Earthy dark berry fruit and slightly herbal aromas introduce solidly rich, punchy and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent length and more sophisticated tannins than usual. This should be lovely in 6 to 8 years. Drink 2013+. WA 90 (12/2009): The Roumier 2006 Morey-St.-Denis Clos de la Bussiere offers ripe plum and black raspberry, brown spices, and hints of game on the nose; offers a strikingly and flatteringly silken texture and a clearer, deep meatiness than the gamy aromatic suggestion intimated; and finishes with carnal and saline savor; subtle invigoration of fruit skin tartness; and an almost airy sense of lift and effortless extension. This should be a delight over the next half dozen years. VM 90 (4/2009): Moderately saturated medium red. Brown spices and oak on the nose. Then pure, dense and complex on the palate, with spicy red fruit flavors and a rather silky texture for the vintage and for this bottling. Comes across as more vivid than the Combottes. This dense, sweet wine has the stuffing to buffer its tannins. Classy, vivid Morey-easier to taste today than the 2007 version. Excellent for this cuvee |

| BH 93 (4/2015): A brooding yet softly perfumed nose features a pretty mix of both red and dark berry aromas that are just beginning to display some secondary development along with background nuances of spice and exotic tea. The delicious and relatively accessible medium-bodied flavors exude a discreet minerality on the complex, balanced and lingering finish where the buried structure arrives just at the end. For my taste this definitely hasn't yet arrived at its peak though the excellent mid-palate density would easily allow this beauty to be enjoyed now. That said I would advise holding this for another 5ish years first. In sum, this is altogether lovely as about the only nit is a finishing hint of warmth. (Drink starting 2021) |

| BH 92 (1/2009): As is virtually always the case, this is bigger and more robust though at the price of less elegance with a much earthier and more obviously sauvage character on the red and dark berry fruit nose that introduces rich, full and more serious big-bodied flavors underpinned by more robust and rustic tannins though not any more depth or length. A qualitative choice that favors ever so slightly the Mazoyères but note that the respective characters are miles apart. Drink: 2015+. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
