WA 92-93 (6/2010): Peat, wood smoke, leather, and soy in the nose of Chevillons’ 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Cailles are joined and complimented by rich cherry and plum on the stubbornly gum-coating palate. A tart fruit skin edge; fruit pit piquancy; brown spices; chalky underpinnings; and saliva-inducing salinity all contribute to the invigoration and vibratory, lip-quivering intensity of a multi-faceted finish. There is certain handsome leanness here - bordering on austerity - but what a lot of energy as well! Lock some away for half a dozen years and expect it to perform impressively until at least age 18.
VM 91-94 (4/2010): (racked in July) Deep, bright red. Superripe, complex nose melds berries, violet, damp earth and a whiff of balsamic vinegar. Wonderfully silky and suave on entry, then spicy and pure in the middle, with a very fresh black cherry flavor dominating underlying earth and floral notes. This spreads out impressively on the back end, with broad tannins saturating the palate.
BH 91-94 (1/2010): (from a 1.12 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). The most complex array of aromas to this point with an airy, elegant and classy nose brimming with violets, anise, earth and red currant notes that complement to perfection the rich, full-bodied, generous and round medium weight plus flavors that explode onto the hugely long and powerful finish. A wine that manages to pull off the rare feat of being at once imposing yet highly refined. Drink 2017+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 92-94 (1/2013): As complex as the Pruliers is, the Les Cailles ratchets it up yet another notch with its spicy and pure blend of cassis, plum, violet and distinct iron-infused earth. There is excellent richness to the cool and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent focus on the explosively long finish. The tannins are dense but quite fine and this offers outstanding upside development potential. (Drink starting 2023).
VM 0-93 (1/2013): Good full, bright red. Very ripe, deep nose offers pomegranate, cranberry and pungent crushed-stone minerality. Very rich and silky; a step up in density from the Pruliers. Thick and chocolatey but with very good lift and verve. Finishes with complex soil tones and serious tannins that will require five or six years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 2011 offers quite prominent and luscious (for the vintage) fruit on the nose with generous oak, however it is deftly integrated with the succulent, tart red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Again, I find that the oak is a little conspicuous, though underneath there is plenty of candied red fruit interlaced with orange peel and tangerine on the feminine, lithe finish. Give this two or three years in bottle and you will have a pretty Nuits Saint Georges. |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Cailles 1er Cru has a focused bouquet of dark cherries with blueberry and briary touches and well-integrated oak. The medium-bodied palate delivers sappy blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine delineation and good grip. Quite spicy and peppery toward the finish. This is a vivacious Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of matière . Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
JD 93 (9/2021): Light to mid purple, there are some slightly herbaceous vegetal touches which should clear, and indeed they do to show ripe purple fruit with excellent clarity. There’s density and complexity, charcoal and chocolate, making an interesting complex wine. |

An elegant, pure and stony cool red berry fruit nose laced with earth and underbrush nuances, both of which can also be found on the beautifully detailed and strikingly complex flavors that culminate in a long and linear finish. In a word, terrific. Drink 2015+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 89-91 (4/2010): (racked in July) Bright, full deep red. Less fruit and more smoke and stony minerality on the nose. Ripe and broad, with little easy sweetness to the mineral and soil flavors. This builds impressively and gains in complexity on the long finish, and will need a good five years of cellaring.
WA 89-90 (6/2010): Ripe dark cherry purple plum; nut oils; pungent green herbs; and smoky black tea scent and flavor the Chevillon 2008 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Perrieres, which features chalky underlying suggestions that true-believers will associate with its site, as well as a prominence of tannin that will encourages 3-5 years’ wait before enjoying. Cherry pit piquancy further enhances this palpably dense Pinot’s rather austere side, but there is overriding vintage-typical juicy brightness to spare in its sustained finish. I suspect ultimately this will merit following for 10-12 years. |

VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry and boysenberry. Slightly high-toned, smooth and dense in the mouth, with sweet, sappy, energetic black fruit flavors dominating. The substantial fine-grained tannins arrive late, spreading out to saturate the sides of the tongue. This seriously concentrated wine finishes impressively long and slightly tight. I can't recall ever scoring Chevillon's Pruliers higher from barrel. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 91-94 (1/2018): A restrained and discreetly earthy nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that are set off by a moderate lashing of wood. The broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors possess a sleek muscularity along with excellent power, all wrapped in a rustic, austere and backward finish. As is usually the case, this is the most obviously Nuits in character among the Chevillon wines and like the Perrières, it demands considerable patience but it's virtually always worth the wait. (Drink starting 2031). |

BH 90-93 (1/2006): Here the nose is ever-so-slightly more elegant with a fruitier and more expressive quality with less earth and more red pinot fruit aromas though all the complexity and perhaps even a touch more. The flavors are classy, fine and wonderfully pure and crafted in a supple and perfectly balanced style that delivers outstanding length and striking intensity. As it usually is, this is a model of refinement and understated grace. (Drink starting 2012).
VM 90-92 (3/2006): Good red-ruby. Reticent, pure aroma of medicinal black cherry. Silky and suave on the palate but a bit more austere and reserved today than the Cailles. Lovely cherry and raspberry fruit is framed by minerality. This mounts slowly and impressively, coating the palate with flavor. When a Nuits-Saint-George wine is velvety like this one is, it's almost invariably Les Saint-Georges. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94 (12/2009): Ethereal, distilled kirsch and framboise notes in the nose of Chevillon 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les St.-Georges usher in a liqueur-like palate display, mingling sweet dark berries with marzipan, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, peat, and crushed stone. This displays a more roasted richness than other Chevillon 2006s, along with a sheer sweetness of fruit that seem to typify this site in the vintage, rendering it far more youthfully accessible than normal. That said, it by no means lacks for mineral or for roasted, meaty dimensions, and I imagine it will be worth following for at least a dozen years. The underlying tannic structure is present, simply swathed in what I anticipate to be a more than ample and renewable concentration of fruit. This beauty merits following for a dozen or more years.
VM 91-94 (4/2008): Good ruby-red. High-pitched, pristine nose offers raspberry coulis, minerals and fresh flowers. Wonderfully fine-grained and sweet but with a medicinal reserve today. This very rich, superripe wine offers insinuating intensity. Its superb underlying fat is hidden by tangy acidity and firm structure. Finishes very sweet, stylish and long. An Outstanding showing, and a classic example of this vintage at its best.
BH 91-93 (1/2008): (from a .60 ha parcel of 75+ year old vines). Here the equally elegant fruit profile runs more to the red side of the spectrum though it is perhaps not quite as complex yet the rich, round and stylish flavors are actually more complex with a delicious, powerful and seriously long finish that packs a real punch. A wine that should mature well over the medium term. Drink 2014+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

WA 94-95 (4/2007): Of all the Chevillon wines, their 2005 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains - like their Cailles and Les St.-Georges, from roughly 80-year-old vines - displays the greatest density, stoniest minerality, most piquant nuttiness, and deepest, darkest, blackberry and beet root “fruit" character. The overall impression is breath-taking in its sheer concentration, yet rather somber and brooding in personality, with an emphasis on piquancy, bitterness and stoniness. Toasted walnut and hickory, cherry pits, black chocolate, stones, and charred meat inform this wine’s powerful, penetrating finish. Were it not for a persistent primary blackberry juiciness and the great refinement of its abundant tannins, this would border on the hyper-concentrated. If further proof were needed that the Chevillons are in a class by themselves among the major Nuits-St.-Georges landholders, they certainly delivered it this year. Like so many other vintners, they reported backing off on pigeage this year - and heaven knows, the resultant wines don’t lack for concentration. Their Bourgogne Passetoutgrain, Bourgogne, and Nuits-St.-Georges Les Perrieres had all just been sulfured and filtered, so Bertrand Chevillon declined to show them. He was as yet noncommittal, however, about when the other wines would be bottled, although this would probably continue through Spring, and be accompanied by the estate’s usual light filtration.
VM 91-94 (4/2007): Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and leather; a bit less minerally and floral than the Saint-Georges. Powerful, brooding and large-scaled on the palate but currently locked up tight and showing less sweetness than the Saint-Georges. But this big boy really saturates the palate. With its serious tannic clout and leathery soil tones, this is classic Nuits-Saint-Georges.
BH 91-94 (4/2007): This is particularly ripe yet the nose is fresh and expressive with its dark raspberry fruit, earth, violet and slightly sauvage notes but the big, robust and amply muscled flavors are brooding to the point of being intensely primary and borderline backward. This is the most structured wine of the range but there is so much extract that the tannins are almost completely buffered, which will permit a long if slow evolution. This is a dramatic effort that isn't quite as classy as the Les St. Georges or Les Cailles but it is likely to be the last wine standing as it were some decades hence. Drink 2017+. WA 94 (12/2009): Cassis and black raspberry take on both liqueur-like richness and distillate-like high tones in the Chevillon 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges Les Vaucrains - analogous to the expression of ripeness in other wines of this collection. And here, too, the roasted sense of low-toned richness suggests chocolate and peat, while bitter notes of fruit pit and iodine add welcome contrast and further basis for fugal interchange of flavors in a long, intensely concentrated finish. On the one hand, this seems more embryonic than its fellow crus, but on the other hand its opulence and interplay of flavors are already utterly seductive and intriguing. In any case, however much of this one acquires, it would be foolish not to stretch those bottles out over a dozen or more years.
VM 92-95 (4/2008): Bright, deep ruby-red. Aromas of dark berry liqueur and bitter chocolate are sappy and liqueur-like but with Outstanding energy. Quite full and powerful for a wine from this cellar, with Outstanding sweetness and breadth to its flavors of blackberry, chocolate and roast coffee. Downright explosive on the finish, the noble tannins totally buffered by a wave of fruit.
BH 91-94 (1/2008): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel). A brooding and much more reserved nose is densely fruited with notes of plum, blueberry, earth and a subtle sauvage hint that mouth coating and impressively concentrated flavors that positively explode on the gorgeously long finish. As it always is, this is a big and powerful wine yet with a bit more elegance than usual. Terrific and potentially the class of the range in 2006. Drink 2016+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 93 (1/2022): The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains 1er Cru has a fresh, tertiary nose with perhaps just a touch of brettanomyces, though it opens nicely with aeration, a pleasant ferrous element coming through. The palate is medium-bodied, taut and fresh, with sappy red berry fruit, fine delineation and a prudent sprinkling of white pepper toward the finish. This is a well-crafted Nuits Saint-Georges with plenty of personality. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting. (Drink between 2023-2042). Neal Martin.
BH 92-94 (1/2019): Relatively generous wood fights a bit with the otherwise cool and pure aromas of extract of cassis, plum, humus, earth and suggestions of the sauvage. As is usually the case chez Chevillon, this is a very powerful wine with imposing size and weight with fine mid-palate density thanks to the abundant dry extract that also helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine that really emerges on the beautifully long finale. (Drink starting 2033).
WA 93-95 (1/2019): As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. VM 91-94 (4/2009): Bright, deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, menthol and musky herbs. Rich, chewy and dry; comes across as quite austere after the last couple of grand crus. But then Jeremy Seysses finds this quality to be reassuring in the context of 2007. "I'm drawn to austerity in this vintage," he told me, adding that he plans to lay down magnums of this wine in his personal cellar, along with the Clos de la Roche and Echezeaux. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent thrust. |

VM 89-91 (4/2009): Medium red with a pale rim. Dark berries, violet and minerals on the nose and in the mouth. Nicely creamy in the middle, with a silky texture, but quite understated today. This rather reserved wine finishes with tangy red berries and a spicy, peppery tang. Vinified mostly with whole clusters. I suspect this is better than it's showing today. |

JM 96 (5/2024): The domaine is blessed with a heritage of ancient vines, in part because Lalou Bize-Leroy never grubs up and replants All the wines are aged in François Frères barrels which have been air dried for three years. They are neither fined nor filtered – “sediment is the jewel in the bottle”. Not the densest but a fine even gentle red across the glass. Some smoky notes from the stems. Then a super svelte glowing mouthful of alpine and gariguette strawberries, and fresh white pepper, light acidity but adequate, just a few tannins, impeccable length. The smokiness and peppery aspect did not diminish with time. Drink from 2022-2037.
BH 96 (6/2009): A deep, brooding and almost taciturn nose of ripe black berry fruit, intense violet notes and spice hints and warm earth gives way to sweet, rich and exceptionally fresh big-bodied flavors that are textured and completely saturate the palate with buckets of dry extract while at the same time buffering the ripe but very firm tannins, all wrapped in a stunningly long finish that has some of the best overall complexity of the entire range. This too will need ample patience but should more than reward the wait. A knock-out. Drink 2022+.
WA 94 (6/2010): Its forward, succulent sweetness of red raspberry and purple plum fruit accompanied by blond tobacco and smoked meat set Leroy’s 2007 Richebourg apart from its Romanee-St.-Vivant sibling, whose utterly contrasting personality may convey more alluring mystery and complexity, but cannot compete with the sheer sappy concentration and particular energy and exuberance on display. There is a meaty savor, smoky tang, and brightness of berry fruit that truly stains the palate. I expect this is another Leroy wine that will defy its vintage by retaining stamina for two or more decades, and in the process will almost certainly reveal further facets. |

Delivers the sweet fruit of 2007 in spades, with a slightly high-toned quality that adds to its sex appeal (all these 2007s have volatile acidity levels around 0.6, according to Liger-Belair, which helps to explain their expressiveness.) Fat and sexy wine, with a complicating saline nuance. Finishes with sweet tannins and superb length. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 91 (1/2010): ( from a .6 ha parcel situated two-thirds in Cruots and the rest in Champs Traversin.) A complex and layered nose of crushed herbs, floral and red berry fruit aromas leads to sappy, dense and powerful flavors that display both power and precision on the muscled, focused and driving finish. This is completely different from the Reignots and does not have the same delicacy or refinement though I would still characterize this as an Echezeaux of finesse. Drink 2017+. |

WA 90 (6/2010): Mugnier’s 2007 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos de la Marechale elicits aromatic allusions to ripe black raspberry, cedar, cardamom, burley tobacco, nut oils, and game, delivering a similar sense of complexity on a relatively rich if conspicuously tannin-girded palate. The sheer sap and finishing grip in evidence here suggest that one might want to follow the wine for 4-6 years in anticipation that the tannins will refine themselves.
VM 90 (4/2010): Good deep red. Blueberry, licorice, brown spices and menthol on the complex nose. Richer and broader than the village wine, with more intense and complex flavors of spicy black and red berries, leather and minerals. Finishes dense, broad and spicy, with substantial fine tannins. An excellent Nuits-Saint-George wine.
BH 89 (6/2010): An expressive nose of green apple, white flower and lemon zest aromas trimmed in a deft touch of wood merges into rich, clean and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of underlying tension and punch on the layered and very dry finish that lingers nicely. A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |

A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
