BH 88-91 (4/2005): A wonderfully seductive nose of plum and spicy black cherry framed in obvious wood lead to very earthy, sweet and intense, gorgeously complex medium full flavors and excellent length. The overall impression is not as elegant as that of the Couchereaux but there is perhaps more depth of material here. A choice. Outstanding! Drink 2013+.
VM 88+ (4/2006): Medium red. Nose shows an almost candied ripeness, with hints of licorice root and smoky oak. Densely packed, broad and dry, with notes of strawberry, underbrush and mushroom. This liqueur-like wine is still rather bound up, but I would like to have seen a bit more verve. |

VM 92 (4/2001): Deep red. Superripe aromas of redcurrant, cocoa powder, mint and game. Tangy, crystallized red berry flavors offer a penetrating sweetness, but firm acids are currently keeping the wine quite tight. Impeccably balanced grand cru, with powerful extract, powerful structure and terrific grip.
BH 89 (2/2001): Beautifully complex, spicy black fruit aromas introduce remarkably supple, medium weight flavors that display plenty of pinot sap and a wonderfully broad range of flavors. This is very intense and quite long with a clear sense of breed to it. This is very young with excellent potential and while this will probably never be a truly great Jadot Bèze, it should be a lovely wine in 10 years or so. Try from 2008+. |

VM 96 (4/2009): Bright, full red. Vibrant but brooding nose shows a medicinal austerity to the pungent aromas of raspberry, flowers and botanical herbs. Penetrating, high-pitched and brilliantly delineated, with uncanny energy and lift to the red berry, floral and mineral flavors. This saturates every square millimeter of the palate, then explodes with perfume on the expanding aftertaste. The overall impression is of pure soil-driven energy in a rather uncompromising style, but when I drank the second half of my bottle two days later with food, it showed a deep cherry flavor and compelling sweetness. Splendid Clos de Beze.
WA 95 (12/2009): The 2006 Chambertin Clos de Beze is in another league from Jadot's other 2006 vintage Chambertin grand crus, or for that matter any wines that went before it in that collection. A complex and classic Clos de Beze nose of rose petal, black raspberry, peat, licorice, dark chocolate, and smoked meats leads to a correspondingly multi-faceted palate of silken textural refinement, underlain by savory, saline minerality. In the best manner of the vintage, this marries soothing and invigoration, concentration and elegance, finishing with lift and refinement as well as riveting, vibratory interplay and extraordinary reach. It should be exciting to plug into a bottle of it anytime over the next 15 years, if not longer.
BH 94 (4/2009): Here the nose is as reserved as the Latricières and only grudgingly gives up glimpses of the spicy and earthy red pinot fruit nose that is quite cool with obvious minerality, which continues onto the textured, intense and nervy big-bodied flavors that are textured and classy with highly sophisticated tannins on the long finish. Despite the reserved character of the nose, I was very pleasantly surprised at the relative accessibility this already displays due to the ample buffering sap yet make no mistake, the '06 Bèze will successfully age for years. A knockout that is noticeably better in-bottle than it originally showed from cask. Drink 2018+. |

There is a serious amount of dry extract that makes this appear less structured than it is in reality. A most impressive effort that is less mineral-driven but a bit tighter than the Chambertin, at least at this early stage. Drink 2017+. |

VM 96+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Knockout soil-driven nose combines red cherry, cocoa powder, brown spices, dried flowers, lavender and minerals. The palate offers compelling high-pitched flavors of red fruits and flowers complemented by strong saline soil tones. Conveys a powerful impression of extract without any fat. This youthfully imploded wine magically combines power and finesse, finishing with Outstanding sappiness and thrust. It was hard to scrape this off my palate--not that I tried.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Beze is unusually open and seductive. It flows with extraordinary finesse and pure elegance. White floral notes, cassis and spices wrap around the palate, adding tons of nuance. The firm tannins don’t quite allow the fruit to be fully expressive, but all that is needed here is time.
BH 93-95 (5/2011): A strikingly complex nose features an intense spiciness to the otherwise ripe, elegant and nuanced red berry liqueur aromas that are in keeping with the equally spicy and intense broad-shouldered and tautly muscular flavors, all wrapped in a mouth coating and very firm finish that delivers stunning persistence. I like the underlying sense of tension that adds vibrancy to the moderately austere and mineral-driven finale. This should be excellent in time. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 96 (4/2013): This is consistently one of Jadot's finest wines and 2010 is no different, in fact it would appear to have even greater ultimate potential than the Musigny, which isn't always the case. The spicy, ripe and exceptionally complex nose of airy, pure and cool red currant, plum and stone aromas gracefully merges into the powerful but sophisticated medium-bodied flavors that possess seemingly buckets of dry extract that almost forcefully pushes the very firm tannic spine to the background on the markedly austere, compact and very tight finish. As intense and powerful as this is, the mouth feel is almost lilting and this is a classic example of a wine exhibiting what I call power without weight. In a word, stunning but note well my suggested optimal drinking window as this will not be for the impatient. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 92 (4/2013): There is a discreet application of wood to the elegant, pure and lightly spiced nose of layered black raspberry and cassis nose that is also barely visible on the mineral-driven, intense and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors. There is excellent volume and plenty of mid-palate stuffing because while this is certainly a wine of finesse, it does not lack for character or seriously impressive persistence on the gorgeously balanced if distinctly austere finish. A wine of class and grace that will need plenty of cellar time as it has already begun to shut down. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

VM 96 (1/2018): Bright medium red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of red cherry, raspberry, underbrush, rose petal and salty minerality; wonderfully subtle and complex. Silky on entry, then densely packed but weightless in the mid-palate, displaying outstanding inner-mouth spicy, floral lift to its intense red fruit and saline mineral flavors. A creamy, utterly seamless old-vines Chapelle with extremely refined tannins and inexorable subtle rising length. Outstanding--but will this wine shut down hard in bottle? Really captures the best qualities of the vintage without sacrificing its typicity. (Drink between 2026-2040)
BH 94 (4/2018): This displays noticeable wood influence though here it's more in the form of menthol than toast though it's not so much as to materially impede the appreciation of the notably ripe red cherry and overtly floral-scented nose where ample hints of the sauvage and warm earth eventually appear. There is remarkably good concentration as the old vine sap is immediately evident whilst coating the palate and pushing the markedly firm tannic spine to the background on the powerful and intensely mineral-driven if noticeably warm finale. | VM 94 (3/2016): Medium red with a palish rim. Complex, soil-inflected aromas of red berries, rose petal, coffee, meat and musky underbrush. In the mouth, fine-grained raspberry, game and savory soil flavors are invigorated by notes of flowers, pepper and spices. Structured but without any hardness, this surprisingly accessible wine finishes with suave, nearly invisible tannins and a strong repeating raspberry flavor. BH 92-94 (4/2017): Notes of wood and menthol combine with those of red currant, dark raspberry and plenty of earth and game scents. The velvety yet quite powerful big-bodied flavors also brim with sappy dry extract that pushes the otherwise notably firm tannic spine to the background on the built-to-age, balanced and wonderfully persistent finale. Drink 2032+.
WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a voluminous and extravagant bouquet with blooms of red berry fruit, although I found myself more drawn to the complex and intellectual Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, assertive Clos de la Roche, quite saline in the mouth with a feisty, spicy finish. This is a fine grand cru from Louis Jadot, though not one of their top releases this vintage.
VM 90-92 (1/2017): (a blend of purchased wine from two sources): Good full red. Aromas of cherry, herbs and oak show a youthfully medicinal quality. Powerful but a touch dry; this strikes me a bit energetically extracted at the expense of the vintage's potential silkiness. The medicinal menthol quality is complicated by notes of brown spices and earth, but the wine's primary fruit is very much in the background today. Finishes dry and imploded, with strong tannins. Not my favorite style of Clos de la Roche. Jadot has eight barrels of this wine, four made via a classic vinification, according to Barnier, and four using more modern, extractive techniques. WA 93-95 (8/1998): This saturated and dark colored wine, with its extraordinarily spicy nose of sweet red and black fruits, sent me soaring. This massive, intense, broad-shouldered, masculine, structured, and chewy wine is crammed with super-ripe, rich, and layered blackberries, cassis, licorice, earth, and Asian spices. As if that were not enough, its dense fruit comes roaring back after expectoration, lingering on the palate for nearly a minute. This is an extraordinary Clos Vougeot! Projected maturity: 2006-2014. Wonderfully pure, inviting nose combines strawberry, raspberry, rose petal, spices, white pepper and blood orange: I might have picked this essence of Burgundy as a Chambolle-Musigny! Plush, silky and fine-grained but tactile and substantial as well, boasting terrific energy for its vintage. (The vines benefited from the cooler temperatures and well-timed rainfall in August, which enable the wine to retain freshness, noted Frederic Barnier.) The wine's very primary red berry, spice and floral flavors display seductive sweetness but a strong element of saline minerality accentuates the overall dry impression. A great wine in the making, showing an almost peppery vibrancy today; I would not be surprised if this shut down in the bottle in the near future. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (2/2019): Palish medium red with little or no amber at the rim. Wilder on the nose than the 2002, with aromas of raspberry, cedar and fresh blood complicated by leather and game nuances. Offers a superb combination of intensity and weight, with its fruit and saline mineral flavors energized by surprisingly fresh acidity and firming minerality. This densely packed midweight is still a bit youthfully imploded, finishing with a tannic firmness. Perhaps most impressive today for its slow-building, rising length, this soil-inflected wine does not narrow on the back half. (Drink between 2020-2039). Stephen Tanzer.
BH 90 (3/2006): Beautifully detailed fruit that is quite feminine in character and remains very fresh and elegant while introducing rich, sappy and intense flavors displaying grand cru intensity, length and structure as well as a really lovely finishing minerality. There is solid if not terrific density here to go with a sweetness that comes from the thick pinot extract. I quite like this and while it presently lacks that "wow" factor, the balance is impeccable and it should gracefully age for a number of years to come; note that I have extended slightly my initial suggested drinking window. | BH 87 (7/2005): An intensely earthy and expressive nose complemented by a mix of primary and secondary pinot fruit, smoke, game and underbrush blends into rich, punchy and somewhat edgy medium full flavors underpinned by prominent if not aggressive tannins that possess a slight hint of greeness to them. This is sufficiently complex that it’s attractive but at this stage it requires food to buffer the structure and I would suggest drinking this up over the next decade as it’s hard to see the fruit outlasting the tannins. In sum, this is not a success but the normally very high standards this wine regularly achieves. |

Medium-to-dark ruby-colored and offering lovely aromas of roses, currants, and raspberries, this wine is admirably expressive yet introverted - it's made for the long haul. It is a feminine, highly-structured, and vibrant wine filled with super-sweet red and black fruits. This focused, defined, and classy offering also possesses an extraordinarily long finish. VM 91-94 (4/1998): Very saturated red-ruby. Bright, sweet black raspberry and cassis nose. Very sweet and intensely flavored, but bracing acidity gives the wine great dynamism and cut. Really explosive in the mouth. Very long, vibrant finish. Grand cru quality. |

VM 94 (5/2019): The 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru (magnum) is blessed with a beautiful bouquet of kirsch, wild strawberry, crushed stone and floral aromas, perhaps closer to the essence of Clos Saint-Jacques than the 2001. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grip on the entry. There is fine weight and salinity in the mouth, and plenty of substance toward the sensual but utterly harmonious finish. This will probably benefit from another two or three years in bottle, and then those patient enough to cellar it will surely be rewarded with two decades of drinking pleasure. BH 93 (5/2025): A notably pretty if ripe nose features notes of spicy and still relatively primary red berries spiked with hints of leather, humus and a whiff of the sauvage. The intense, dense and full-bodied flavors brim with sappy dry extract before culminating in a stony, palate coating and driving finish that is serious, firm and beautifully persistent. This robust effort remains youthful but not unapproachable and this most recent bottle was quite civilized and showing well.. In a word, impressive. (Drink starting 2030). |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very refined, you could almost say "mild-mannered" bouquet compared to the other Gevrey premier cru, with more mineral notes and more floral scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a sturdy and assertive entry: bold but ripe, supple tannin knitted with well-judged acidity that dovetail into a very focused finish. This is not as immediate as I believe the other Gevrey premier cru will be and will deserve several years in bottle.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Here there is a bit more wood with the associated traces of menthol that surround the elegant floral and like the Estournelles, airy essence of red berry fruit liqueur and spice suffused aromas. There is a sophisticated mouth feel to the appealingly textured, intense and focused middle weight flavors that also display plenty of minerality that serves to add lift to the structured, serious and strikingly long finish. This is indisputably terrific though interestingly it doesn't seem to have quite as much separation between it and the other Gevrey 1ers in the range as I typically find chez Jadot. Still, this should be a really lovely effort though note well that this is a CSJ for the patient. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 90-93 (1/2015): (this fruit was harvested on October 10, following heavy rain on the 9th): Medium red. Lovely rose petal perfume dominates the nose. Juicy and pure but tight and youthfully unforgiving; showing less fat and volume than the Estournelles. JM 93 (9/2017): Medium deep red purple, oak and a touch of oxidation has slightly affected the nose, causing some stewed fruit. It also makes the wine a bit clumsy in the mouth, and there is a lot of oak, but there is also a sign of very high class fruit typical of the vineyard. So this sample is not working today but I suspect a really fine wine underneath.
BH 91 (4/2017): An airy and markedly floral nose also reveals spicy notes of both red and dark currant, spice and plenty of earth character. There is good richness to the vibrant and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that retain fine delineation on the elegant, dusty and well-balanced finish. At present this seems to lack the mid-palate stuffing I'm used to seeing from the best vintages though I suspect that this will very likely fill out with time in bottle. In sum, 2014 appears to be a very good but not genuinely great vintage for this consistently excellent wine. Drink 2024+. |

WA 92-94+ (1/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) unfurls in the glass with an incipiently complex bouquet of sweet red berries, coffee roast, raw cocoa, candied peel and cedary new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, with an abundance of satiny structuring tannin, juicy acids and a long, pure finish. As usual, this will require some bottle age, but it's one of the high points of the collection.
BH 91-94 (4/2019): Like several of the foregoing wines, the wood and menthol-infused nose is quite firmly reduced and basically unreadable today. Otherwise there is exceptionally good richness and volume to the concentrated flavors that brim with dry extract that imparts a velvety mouth feel as well as buffers the notably firm tannic spine shaping the muscular and youthfully austere finale. This is presently not especially complex but the underlying material appears to be present such that the normal outstanding depth should gradually develop. Drink 2032+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 91-93 (1/2019): The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru clearly has the finest bouquet of seven wines that I tasted from the appellation by Jadot. It is very precise and focused, showing superb edginess and impressive terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This is quite linear in style, the fruit just a little muted toward the finish, but there is fine structure and detail on this more masculine Clos Saint-Jacques than anticipated.Neal Martin.' |

BH 90-93 (5/2011): This is one of the few wines to display noticeable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose though my score assumes that this will be corrected before it is bottled. There is good richness and vibrancy to the solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract though the palate impression of the finish is still quite firm, all wrapped in a backend that delivers excellent persistence. This is a bit more rough and tumble than one typically sees from a classic Griotte though it does not display any overt rusticity. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Griotte-Chambertin is sweet, sensual and inviting. Deceptively medium in body, the wine shows plenty of density. Flowers, cinnamon and menthol emerge in the glass as this sensual wine flows through to the finish. There is just a hint of rusticity on the close; otherwise, this is a fine, generous Burgundy. There is excellent power and concentration to the sleek, intense and stony flavors that evidence obvious muscle that really comes up on the palate coating, austere and mineral-suffused finish. This robust effort is even slightly firmer and plenty of patience is recommended. Drink 2035+. |

VM 90-93 (3/2010): Deep ruby-red. Wild, superripe aromas of blackberry, pepper and spices, with an almost C ote-Rotie-like animal character. Sweet and lush but very primary, with a lot of smoky oak showing today. A rather powerful and serious young wine but not yet delineated. BH 89-92 (4/2010): An expressive and somewhat animale nose of red currant, black cherry, stone and plenty of underbrush nuances lead to rich, full and very serious medium weight plus flavors that possess fine power and impressive scale, all wrapped in a long if mildly dry finish that again, I attribute to the significant amounts of CO2. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a deep and introspective bouquet with broody dark berry fruit, wild hedgerow and forest floor aromas that draw you in. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well judged acidity. This is linear at the moment, very nicely focused with a dash of white pepper on the finish livening things up. Very fine...but patience required.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Like the Charmes and the Griotte, Barnier said that this was not vinified by Jadot. There is a pretty and expressive nose of red currant, raspberry, wild cherry and soft sauvage hints where the latter continues onto the dense, serious and powerful big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by a very firm and slightly rustic finish that delivers excellent if not truly sensation persistence. I slightly prefer the Chapelle for its greater refinement but it's close qualitatively speaking. Note that this too will require plenty of patience.
VM 90-92 (11/2014): Bright medium red. Lightly medicinal aromas of black cherry, licorice, menthol and smoke. Sweet on entry, then rather backward on the palate; has no shortage of salty stuffing but an impression of lowish acidity gives the brooding palate a slightly heavy quality. Tannins are reasonably ripe but this wine is a cipher today. Stephen Tanzer. |

The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, lively with a touch of lemongrass and spiciness more pronounced than the Chartron, although it feels more forward and does not possess the same degree of sophistication or nuance. | VM 93+ (10/2019): Good medium red; a bit less saturated than the 2010. More spicy and exotic on the nose than the '10, with its raspberry and mineral aromas joined by a light herbal element. Enters the mouth with silky richness, then turns juicy in the mid-palate, showing a very suave texture and surprising framing acidity to its flavors of liqueur-like red fruits and dried flowers. Quite powerful and long, finishing with serious late-arriving tannins. This is built for a long evolution in bottle. BH 94 (4/2012): (the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding!
WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.
VM 93 (4/2012): (this was racked only once, a month before being bottled in June of 2011): Good bright medium red. Fresh red berries, licorice and truffle on the nose, complicated by tobacco and iron. Dense, lush and packed with fruit; really showcases the richness of a sunny year without turning heavy. Deep, saline, seamless wine, with a thick, soil-driven finish. Finishes with surprising verve. Very impressive. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes impresses for its classy, elegant personality. There is an airy, weightless quality that is immensely appealing. In many ways, the Charmes sums up so much of what Burgundy is and can be. Layers of fruit literally float on the plate on the inviting finish. This is another fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
VM 92+ (4/2012): Medium red. Reticent nose hints at raspberry, crushed rock and menthol. Quite dry and imploded but juicy and fresh, with lively notes of red berries and olive. Much less demonstrative today than the Beaux-Bruns and more dominated by its structure. Shows good minerality for the year and finishes dry, classy and long. This tight, firmly structured wine will need at least several years of aging.
BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a .25 ha parcel). An ultra elegant, airy and delicate red berry fruit nose leads to seductively textured middle weight flavors that display moderate amounts of minerality on the pure, long and decidedly firm finish. Like the Fuees, this is a wine of harmony and fine balance. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

BH 93 (1/2012): Like the '09 Fuées this is exceptionally fresh for the vintage and displays cool and especially pure high-toned red pinot fruit, dried rose petals and subtle stone hints. The very rich and voluminous soil-inflected flavors finish with a linear, intense and very firm backend. This should be lovely in time though at present, it is austere as this is a very serious effort, particularly for the vintage. (Drink starting 2017). |

This is a relatively powerful effort that isn't an exercise in finesse but it most impressive nonetheless. A big Vosne villages.

WA 92-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Echezeaux (from one of the cooler sites in the vineyard) hovers on the palate in a weightless expression of grace and class. It is impeccably refined from start to finish, with delicate layers of white flowers and sweet spices that add complexity and nuance to the fruit. The wine’s gorgeous inner fragrance and impossibly fine tannins are first-rate. This is another dazzling wine from Dujac. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.
BH 92-94 (1/2011): (from the climat Champs Traversin). An intensely floral, spicy, earthy and ripe nose offers up a densely fruited mix of black pinot fruit, black cherry and cassis aromas. The big-bodied flavors are exceptionally cool and fresh yet the tannins are fully mature as they support and shape the restrained, minerally and impressively persistent finish. Like the Malconsorts, this will require at least 15 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2024+.
VM 91-93 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby color. Musky black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate and underbrush on the nose. Then higher-pitched on the palate than the nose would suggest, cool and filigree in style, with limited fat (this is the lowest in alcohol of the Dujac grand crus at 12.6%). Slight gamey complexity. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and a light touch. |

BH 92-94 (1/2011): A highly spiced nose speaks of anise, clove and violet nuances on the pretty mix of blue and black pinot fruit and plum aromas. The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors possess a seductive and velvety mouth feel, all wrapped in a very firm and explosively long finish. This should be wonderful in due time though note well that this will require every bit of 15 years of cellar time. Drink 2024+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 92-95 (2/2011): Good deep red. Highly complex and expressive aromas of musky raspberry, minerals, dried flowers and bitter chocolate. A step up in intensity and inner-mouth clarity from the preceding samples, offering terrific density and thickness but also excellent lift to the cherry and raspberry fruit. This boasts an utterly seamless texture of liquid velvet. Finishes ripe and very long, with lush, virtually invisible tannins. A wine like this will be irresistible young but should also age well on its balance and concentration. (The Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux-Monts and the Charmes-Chambertin had not yet finished their malolactic fermentations.)
WA 92-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts blossoms on the palate with inimitable grace in its bright red fruit. Floral notes appear later, adding lift and volume. The Malconsorts possesses dazzling inner perfume, with clean, saline notes framing the exquisite finish. This is one of the more generous of the 1er Crus at Dujac, and always one of my personal favorites. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. |

VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru.
BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. Drink 2029+. |

An attractively complex nose of black raspberry, plum and pungent earth introduces rich, round and fleshy medium weight plus flavors that possess excellent density but also relatively fine supporting tannins that add shape to the strikingly long finish. While not a wine of finesse, this is certainly finer than it usually is. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!

BH 95 (1/2012): (from the climat of Les Cruots, also known as Vignes Blanches). An exuberantly spicy nose of wonderfully seductive black fruit liqueur aromas leads to rich, suave, pure and dense flavors that are a highly beguiling blend of finesse and power, all wrapped in a robust yet finely detailed finish of stunning length. This is one of the very best examples of the appellation in 2009. Drink 2024+.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Echezeaux is pure silk. Black cherries, spices, licorice and tar are all woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable elegance. All the elements fall into place as the Echezeaux captivates both the intellectual and hedonistic senses. This is a wine that impresses for its understated elegance. Readers won’t fine the drive of the Clos de Vougeot or the structure of the Richebourg. Instead, the Echezeaux possesses stunning textural finesse and phenomenal balance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 93+ (4/2012): Good deep, bright red. Very reduced nose is currently blocking the wine's primary fruits. Fatter but initially less sweet than the Clos de Vouget, with a bit of leathery funk to its dark berry, earth and iodine flavors. Began quite unforthcoming if rather suave, but gained significantly in sweetness and thickness with aeration. This will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging or a lot of time in a decanter. Grivot believes that the very dense cork he used to seal this wine is largely responsible for its reductive character. |

WA 95+ (5/2011): The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 92+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Primary aromas of blackberry, wild herbs and pepper, along with a whiff of game. Dense and closed today, conveying a strong impression of power. There's a slightly sugary quality to the black raspberry fruit, but also a distinctly savory character to the notes of licorice, fresh herbs and underbrush. The cooler sites are a bit less 2009-typical, noted Nicolas Groffier, ". . . a bit 2005-like." Finishes very long, with substantial dusty tannins and a piquant hint of lemon rind.
BH 92 (1/2012): ( from a .97 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). This opens with noticeable reduction and though it doesn't dissipate immediately, it eventually recedes to the background where it doesn't overtly detract from the otherwise attractive mix of dark berry fruit, earth and rose petal aromas. The supple, round and delicious yet utterly serious medium-bodied flavors possess good verve and a sophisticated mouth feel and while this is not an especially concentrated or powerful example of this grand cru, it is beautifully balanced. An understated 2009 that, much like the Amoureuses, will drink well young yet should be capable of rewarding 7 to 10 years of cellar time. Drink 2017+. |

In contrast to its 1er siblings, this is really quite pretty and while there was a trace of reduction at first, it disappeared within 3 minutes so it's a non-issue for the Amoureuses. Otherwise, the nose is really quite pretty with the hallmark spice and wet stone nuances that add depth to the ripe yet cool and elegant red berry fruit aromas. There is a supple and very Chambollesque quality to the refined and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that offer good if not truly sensational depth and length. This is also relatively forward and while it will certainly age, I was surprised at how civilized it is already. Drink 2016+. |

An exotic concoction of racy, floral-infused raspberries, spices, mint, rose petals and hard candy emerges from this seductive, alluring Burgundy. This is a flamboyant wine full of intrigue for the future. The open, radiant finish is backed up by plenty of energy. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel that was replanted sequentially - 1985, 1988 and 1989; the wine carries the qualifier of Musigni because it comes from a parcel of vines at the top of Clos de Vougeot, directly across from the vineyard of Musigny). Here the less obviously oaked nose runs more toward the red side of the fruit spectrum before merging into rich and seductively textured broad-shouldered flavors that are also blessed with ample amounts of dry extract that renders the supporting tannins almost invisible on the detailed, youthfully austere and solidly persistent finish. The Clos de Vougeot tannins are there, but beautifully balanced by the textured, persistent fruit. The finish is feminine, persistent and impeccable in its elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 89 (4/2012): Medium red. Reticent aromas of diffuse red fruits, brown spices and smoky minerality. Brighter in the mouth, with a saline quality to the slightly medicinal flavors of red cherry, strawberry and dried flowers. Not a particularly opulent or fleshy style. VM 96+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Knockout soil-driven nose combines red cherry, cocoa powder, brown spices, dried flowers, lavender and minerals. The palate offers compelling high-pitched flavors of red fruits and flowers complemented by strong saline soil tones. Conveys a powerful impression of extract without any fat. This youthfully imploded wine magically combines power and finesse, finishing with Outstanding sappiness and thrust. It was hard to scrape this off my palate--not that I tried.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Beze is unusually open and seductive. It flows with extraordinary finesse and pure elegance. White floral notes, cassis and spices wrap around the palate, adding tons of nuance. The firm tannins don’t quite allow the fruit to be fully expressive, but all that is needed here is time.
BH 93-95 (5/2011): A strikingly complex nose features an intense spiciness to the otherwise ripe, elegant and nuanced red berry liqueur aromas that are in keeping with the equally spicy and intense broad-shouldered and tautly muscular flavors, all wrapped in a mouth coating and very firm finish that delivers stunning persistence. I like the underlying sense of tension that adds vibrancy to the moderately austere and mineral-driven finale. This should be excellent in time. Drink 2024+. |

BH 90-93 (5/2011): This is one of the few wines to display noticeable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose though my score assumes that this will be corrected before it is bottled. There is good richness and vibrancy to the solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract though the palate impression of the finish is still quite firm, all wrapped in a backend that delivers excellent persistence. This is a bit more rough and tumble than one typically sees from a classic Griotte though it does not display any overt rusticity. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Griotte-Chambertin is sweet, sensual and inviting. Deceptively medium in body, the wine shows plenty of density. Flowers, cinnamon and menthol emerge in the glass as this sensual wine flows through to the finish. There is just a hint of rusticity on the close; otherwise, this is a fine, generous Burgundy. BH 95 (4/2012): The wondrous complexity of the aromas is genuinely remarkable with its ultra-fresh, ripe and airy red berry fruit, stone, earth and spice scents. Moreover, this impressive depth continues onto the rich, full-bodied and very serious big-bodied flavors that ooze dry extract on the concentrated, intense and vibrant finish that seems to go on and on. I very much like the balance and while this is certainly extremely rich and ripe, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness or undue weightiness. This explosive effort should be magnificent in time. WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Volnay Clos de Chene is a model of elegance. Weightless, pure and elegant, it succeeds in conveying notable flavor intensity with no sense of heaviness, something only Pinot Noir is capable of doing to this degree. The fresh, vibrant finish suggests the wine has many days of fine drinking ahead. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 91+ (4/2012): Good full red. Reticent nose hints at medicinal black cherry, blackberry and licorice; smells much tougher than the Clos des Ducs. Densely packed but quite tight (is this already shutting down?), with the medicinal character carrying through onto the palate. Compared to the Clos des Ducs, this wine shows a darker fruit character and no easy sweetness today. The tannins arrive late, then build. Lafarge continues to compare the 2009s to past years like 1985, 1966 and 1964. He noted that the '09s "gained in harmony and complexity during their last months of elevage." |

BH 94 (4/2012): This is aromatically a bit less elegant than the Mitans but it is more complex with cool red and blue pinot fruit, violet, earth and stone nuances introducing attractively rich and equally pure middle weight flavors that exhibit real verve on the mouth coating and exceptionally persistent finish. As usual, this is a classic Volnay that is built to age and will need every bit of 12 to 15 years to be at its best. In short, this is a knockout. Outstanding! Drink: 2021+.
WA 93-95 (5/2011): The estate’s 2009 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs saturates the palate with its deep, persistent fruit. The aromas and flavors build in the glass towards the rich, multi-dimensional finish. This shows marvelous staying power and fabulous overall balance. The Clos du Chateau des Ducs is more overtly fruit-driven and structured but perhaps a touch less aromatically expressive than the Mitans. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 92 (4/2012): Rather pale red. Highly aromatic, expressive scents of redcurrant, cherry, spices and flowers. Wonderfully suave and fine-grained, in the typically feminine style of this wine--and classic Volnay. Lovely pliant red fruit and licorice flavors saturate the mouth, with a saline element adding interest on the long finish. Shows an attractive light touch and supple tannins. This will go truffley with bottle aging. |

WA 96 (4/2012): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Reignots explodes onto the palate with dazzling richness and power. Black fruit tar, licorice and smoke are just some of the many aromas and flavors that stain the palate as this dark, brooding Burgundy shows off its pedigree. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, intense finish. Underlying veins of salinity give the wine its sense of proportion. In 2009 the Reignots is superb Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
BH 94 (1/2012): (the Liger-Belair vines in this small vineyard run from top to bottom whereas the others are situated in segments; Cathiard is on top, Grivot in the middle and Arnoux at the bottom.) This is not quite as floral as the Brûlees though it is perhaps even a bit fresher with a highly spiced nose that is very Vosne in character. The supple, round and beautifully well-delineated middle weight flavors seem to exude both a liquid minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the firm but sophisticated tannins on the tension-infused, focused and highly complex finish. This should be terrific and I really like the impeccable balance of this long and powerful yet strikingly refined effort. Drink 2024+. Outstanding!

An almost invisible touch of wood sets off spicy, pure and attractively fresh red and dark berry fruit aromas that slide gracefully into delicious, complex and lightly mineral-inflected flavors that are underpinned by very fine tannins and fine length on the balanced finish. BH 94-97 (1/2011): (from a .37 ha parcel in Les Veroilles of 40+ year old vines save for a very tiny parcel in Richebourg proper). This is ripe yet even more restrained, indeed to the point of reticence though aggressive swirling liberates the blackberry and cassis-infused nose that also possesses a huge array of spice and mineral nuances. The big-bodied, concentrated, intense and superbly powerful flavors are underpinned by very firm tannins that are rugged and robust though not rustic, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish with plenty of underlying tension as you can really sense the energy here. This should be fantastic in time though note that plenty of time will definitely be required. Drink 2029+. Don't miss!

WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

BH 92 (6/2012): I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Marechale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Drink 2014+. Outstanding!
WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale shows the more virile side of Pinot. Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. The wine’s masculine personality is quite a contrast to the seductiveness of Mugnier’s other 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 89-92 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry liqueur, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with an earthy nuance. Large-scaled, lush and sweet, with a creamy, chocolatey flavor saturating the palate. This big, slightly rough wine benefits from its substantial tannins, which help to balance the sweetness of the alcohol. The pHs of these grapes was the highest to date, noted Mugnier, but as there was so little malic acidity, the post-ML pH is now just a bit higher than average. Mugnier told me there would probably be no Clos des Forches bottling, as he needed to include some of the less-ripe juice in the Clos de la Marechale. (Incidentally, the very promising 2009 Marechale blanc, which had been racked into stainless steel tank in September and will be bottled in January, was dry, powerful, complex and gripping, with excellent energy and acidity for the vintage.) |

| VM 94+ (4/2012): Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherries macerated in alcohol, mocha and wild herbs. Generous, pliant and highly concentrated, with lovely floral, mineral and minty high notes lifting the ripe cherry fruit. Finishes tactile, chewy and very long, with noble, sweet tannins and hints of game and menthol. These vines date back to 1885, but Philippe Roty is quick to point out that there has been a lot of repiquage (replanting of individual vines as they die) along the way. I would not be surprised if this wine merited a higher score 10 or 15 years down the road. |

This is also quite fresh and bright if not quite as ripe with high-toned and very Chambolle-like red berry fruit and wet stone aromas that lead to lacy, pure and refined middle weight flavors that are the epitome of finesse and harmony. This is not only a lovely villages but it's also one that is less obviously marked by the vintage. Excellent and this too is recommended. Drink 2015+. Outstanding!
WA 90 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny comes across as quite ripe and racy next to the 2010. Flowers, sweet spices and licorice add lovely complexity to the super-ripe dark red fruit. The Chambolle impresses for its balance and soft, inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
VM 90 (4/2012): Medium red. Ripe raspberry and chocolate on the nose and palate. Plush, pliant and sweet; wonderfully full, seamless and creamy for village wine. Finishes with smooth, chocolatey tannins and excellent length. Christophe Roumier compared his 2009s to his 1990s, saying that he believed the wines would "build up new flavors with aging." He told me that he wouldn't broach even this village offering for a few years. |

A highly expressive and quite densely fruited nose features aromas of red berry liqueur, earth and underbrush. Similarly, there is plenty of substance to the big, rich and generous broad-shouldered flavors that possess Outstanding depth of material, indeed there is so much sap that the very firm tannic spine is presently almost invisible on the textured, balanced and superbly long finish. Somewhat curiously for such a big wine, this will be approachable young due to the abundance of sap but should age brilliantly well. I should note that normally this is easily the most complex wine in the Serafin range but while this is certainly blessed with the most underlying material, for the moment it displays no more overall complexity than does the Cazetiers. It very well may in time and if so my score will be quite rightly viewed as overly conservative. Drink 2024+. |

WA 97 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous.
BH 96 (1/2012): A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine. Drink 2029+.
VM 95+ (4/2012): Good bright, deep red. Raspberry liqueur, crushed rock and vanillin oak on the suave, subdued nose; shows the greatest lift of these 2009s. Superconcentrated and creamy but light on its feet, displaying terrific energy and sappiness for 2009. Gained in verve with aeration, with high-pitched, tangy flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, flowers and minerals spreading out to saturate the mouth. With its finishing perfume and taste of limestone, this really transcends the vintage. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
