Tasting Notes:
BH 92-94 (1/2011): Mild wood influence sets off a highly complex nose comprised of fresh red currant and blue pinot fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and a sauvage hint that carries over to the relatively refined and supple yet entirely serious, powerful and concentrated flavors that deliver outstanding length. Despite the fact that the underlying tannins are finer than usual, this is not to say that it is an elegant wine though it is less youthfully austere than I typically find with this wine. Drink 2024+.

BH 92-95 (1/2008): A completely backward but superbly complex nose displays layered aromas that run to game and underbrush as well as ripe red and dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of wood toast that give way to rich, sweet and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of muscle and real volume on the explosive, textured and sappy finish that is impressively concentrated and wonderfully long. There is ample structure here as well though it's largely buffered by all of the mid-palate extract and I particularly like the depth. A serious wine that will live for decades. Drink 2021+. Don't miss!
VM 92+ (4/2009): Bright medium red. Captivating but reduced aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, dried flowers and spices. Juicy and vibrant but youthfully unforthcoming, offering excellent energy and grip to its intense raspberry, spice and stone flavors. Best today on the very long, lively aftertaste, which features substantial dusty tannins and terrific architecture for aging. I would not be surprised if this merited a score in the mid-90s a decade from now. |

BH 93-95 (1/2013): (from a 1.29 ha parcel). An exuberantly spicy, cool and airy nose that mixes a variety of wild red berries, humus and earth nuances where the latter component is also well-represented on the solidly well-detailed and powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess superb length. This is a big but not burly Bèze that is actually more a wine of finesse than outsized power and weight. Drink 2026+. Don't miss!
VM 93-95 (2/2013): Good deep red. Deeply pitched, slightly reduced nose dominated by smoky minerality, musky soil tones, game bird, gunflint and dried rose. Thick, sweet and very intense, offering terrific smoky, soil-driven complexity but not yet displaying its underlying fruit. Finishes with big, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. Doesn't yet show the sheer eclat of the Mazis, but this may be going through an awkward stage. |

| BH 95-98 (1/2012): This is aromatically similar to the "regular" cuvee of the Clos de Bèze but not identical as it's slightly spicier and notably more restrained, indeed even backward. The big-bodied, opulent and exceptionally rich flavors enjoy huge depth of material that renders the firm and ripe tannins almost invisible at present though I expect that they will become much more prominent in time. This stunningly long and perfumed effort will require at least 20 years of cellar time before it can fully resolve its structure. Until then, lots of patience will be necessary for this 'wow' wine to arrive at its full maturity. Drink 2030+. |

BH 92-94 (1/2013): (blended from 3 separate parcels). An attractively complex and unusually refined nose speaks of red currant, kirsch, soft earth and a hint of wood spice. There is a refined mouth feel to the larger-scaled flavors thanks to the fine grain of the ripe and well-integrated tannins on the mildly austere and impressively long, indeed even explosive finish. This is terrific and the backend offers the same excellent depth the nose promises. Lovely stuff. Drink 2026+.
VM 90-93 (2/2013): Good bright, deep red. Cherry, rose petal, mocha and game on the nose, plus a hint of metallic minerality. Dense, sappy and youthfully tight; less expansive today than the Echezeaux and more peppery too. Has a serious spine for aging but seems a tad dry in the early going. |

VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru.
BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. Drink 2029+. |

The very long, slowly rising finish boasts Outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume.

BH 93-95 (1/2014): The quality of this wine has skyrocketed over the past few vintages; while it was always very good, it has now become one of the most consistent performers in the Faiveley portfolio. There is quite a bit of wood influence at present and it fights a bit with the spicy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit plenty of earth and game character. The impressively scaled and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess an opulent yet entirely serious mouth feel before culminating in a balanced, explosively and tremendously persistent finish. This is a bit woody today yet the underlying material is such that it seems all but evident that it will successfully integrate the oak in time. Drink 2032+. Don't miss!
VM 93-96 (1/2014): Bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and graphite. Dense, sappy and energetic, offering Outstanding depth to its soil-driven black cherry and saline flavors. VM 92+ (3/2016): Full medium red. A note of reduction dissipated to show complex, inviting aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dried flowers, spices and caraway seed. Dense, dry and gripping, with strong saline minerality giving it a distinctly serious mien. | BH 96 (5/2018): An extremely ripe nose manages to avoid any sense of surmaturite on the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and lilac scents. This is a massive wine, with huge mid-palate concentration, power and muscle that terminates in a borderline painfully intense finale that both coats the palate and lasts for minutes. I take considerable pains to point out however that this ultra-structured and overtly austere effort is not only built for the long haul but for the very long haul. I have suggested an initial drinking window of 30 years from now but it may very well be longer. In sum, this brilliant effort is very old school Corton that I wouldn't even consider opening for at least 10 years. Try from 2035+. |

BH 93-96 (1/2012): A very deeply pitched nose that displays fresh red and dark berry fruit and floral aromas along with notes of the sauvage that continue over to the serious and very solidly structured big-bodied flavors. This is an impressively scaled wine yet the supporting tannins are relatively fine though quite dense and as such, the overall impression is one of robust power even if it is refined in its delivery. This is going to require a long cellar stay but it should be magnificent when it finally emerges. (Drink starting 2028).
VM 92-95 (1/2012): Good deep red. Reduced aromas of game and silex reminded me of a Corton grand cru. Fat and sweet but a bit monolithic today compared to the Latricieres, without quite the same impression of inner-palate energy of delineation. Best today on the very long, thick, unflagging finish. VM 93-96 (2/2013): Bright, deep red. Very deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke and crushed rock. At once penetrating and utterly fine-grained; explosive sappy perfume fills the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Pinot just doesn't pull off this trick anywhere but in Burgundy's top sites. Finishes with noble tannins and Outstanding palate-staining length.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): (from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the vines total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet hint of wood allows the slightly riper and definitely more sauvage aromas of earth, humus, dark berries and soft spice notes to shine. There is excellent power to the robust and broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with structure-buffering dry extract that coats the palate on the mineral-driven, punchy and seriously persistent finish. This is not quite as austere as the Latricières though note that here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2026+. Don't miss! |

| VM 93+ (10/2019): Good medium red; a bit less saturated than the 2010. More spicy and exotic on the nose than the '10, with its raspberry and mineral aromas joined by a light herbal element. Enters the mouth with silky richness, then turns juicy in the mid-palate, showing a very suave texture and surprising framing acidity to its flavors of liqueur-like red fruits and dried flowers. Quite powerful and long, finishing with serious late-arriving tannins. This is built for a long evolution in bottle. Guillaume d'Angerville told me that this wine started out huge, but then the élevage gave it focus, whereas the 2008 Clos des Ducs began lean and got richer. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 94 (4/2012): (the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age.) This is also quite ripe but agreeably fresh with pure aromas of mocha, red currant, cassis, black cherry, warm earth, violets and subtle spice hints. There is good energy to the intense and admirably rich full-bodied flavors that envelope the palate with velvety sap on the beautifully balanced and impressively persistent finish. I very much like the sense of underlying tension because despite this being a big wine with plenty of concentration, the balance is impeccable and there is absolutely nothing ponderous about this complete effort. There is a hint of backend warmth but otherwise, this is really most impressive. Note however that this very firm effort will require plenty of cellar time. Drink 2029+. Outstanding!
WA 94 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux is flat-out beautiful. Layers of racy, exotic fruit caress the palate as the wine opens up in the glass. The 2009 is quite typical of the year, yet possesses fabulous overall harmony. Although exuberant today, the Clos des Epeneaux will deliver tons of pleasure for many years. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2030.
VM 93 (4/2012): (this was racked only once, a month before being bottled in June of 2011): Good bright medium red. Fresh red berries, licorice and truffle on the nose, complicated by tobacco and iron. Dense, lush and packed with fruit; really showcases the richness of a sunny year without turning heavy. Deep, saline, seamless wine, with a thick, soil-driven finish. Finishes with surprising verve. Very impressive. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes impresses for its classy, elegant personality. There is an airy, weightless quality that is immensely appealing. In many ways, the Charmes sums up so much of what Burgundy is and can be. Layers of fruit literally float on the plate on the inviting finish. This is another fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.
VM 92+ (4/2012): Medium red. Reticent nose hints at raspberry, crushed rock and menthol. Quite dry and imploded but juicy and fresh, with lively notes of red berries and olive. Much less demonstrative today than the Beaux-Bruns and more dominated by its structure. Shows good minerality for the year and finishes dry, classy and long. This tight, firmly structured wine will need at least several years of aging.
BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a .25 ha parcel). An ultra elegant, airy and delicate red berry fruit nose leads to seductively textured middle weight flavors that display moderate amounts of minerality on the pure, long and decidedly firm finish. Like the Fuees, this is a wine of harmony and fine balance. Drink 2019+. Outstanding! |

VM 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles comes across as quite extroverted today. The focus and sheer energy of the dark fruit are what stand out most. Barthod's Veroilles has developed beautifully since I tasted it last year. (Drink between 2019-2029). Antonio Galloni.
BH 93 (1/2012): Like the '09 Fuées this is exceptionally fresh for the vintage and displays cool and especially pure high-toned red pinot fruit, dried rose petals and subtle stone hints. The very rich and voluminous soil-inflected flavors finish with a linear, intense and very firm backend. This should be lovely in time though at present, it is austere as this is a very serious effort, particularly for the vintage. (Drink starting 2017). |

BH 90 (1/2012): A mix of wood and natural spice sits atop red and blackberry liqueur aromas that merge into rich, concentrated and pure flavors that happily possess plenty of extract as the tannins are robust and quite firm. This is a relatively powerful effort that isn't an exercise in finesse but it most impressive nonetheless. A big Vosne villages.
VM 88+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Reticent but lively aromas of black cherry, cassis, licorice and menthol, with some riper notes of mocha and chocolate coming up with air. Juicy but a bit youthfully aggressive; in a rather powerful, chocolatey style for village wine. No shortage of energy here, but this needs time to harmonize in bottle. |

WA 92-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Echezeaux (from one of the cooler sites in the vineyard) hovers on the palate in a weightless expression of grace and class. It is impeccably refined from start to finish, with delicate layers of white flowers and sweet spices that add complexity and nuance to the fruit. The wine’s gorgeous inner fragrance and impossibly fine tannins are first-rate. This is another dazzling wine from Dujac. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.
BH 92-94 (1/2011): (from the climat Champs Traversin). An intensely floral, spicy, earthy and ripe nose offers up a densely fruited mix of black pinot fruit, black cherry and cassis aromas. The big-bodied flavors are exceptionally cool and fresh yet the tannins are fully mature as they support and shape the restrained, minerally and impressively persistent finish. Like the Malconsorts, this will require at least 15 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2024+.
VM 91-93 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby color. Musky black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate and underbrush on the nose. Then higher-pitched on the palate than the nose would suggest, cool and filigree in style, with limited fat (this is the lowest in alcohol of the Dujac grand crus at 12.6%). Slight gamey complexity. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and a light touch. |

A step up in intensity and inner-mouth clarity from the preceding samples, offering terrific density and thickness but also excellent lift to the cherry and raspberry fruit. This boasts an utterly seamless texture of liquid velvet. Finishes ripe and very long, with lush, virtually invisible tannins. A wine like this will be irresistible young but should also age well on its balance and concentration. (The Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux-Monts and the Charmes-Chambertin had not yet finished their malolactic fermentations.)
WA 92-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts blossoms on the palate with inimitable grace in its bright red fruit. Floral notes appear later, adding lift and volume. The Malconsorts possesses dazzling inner perfume, with clean, saline notes framing the exquisite finish. This is one of the more generous of the 1er Crus at Dujac, and always one of my personal favorites. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. |

VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru.
BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. While not a wine of finesse, this is certainly finer than it usually is. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!

An exuberantly spicy nose of wonderfully seductive black fruit liqueur aromas leads to rich, suave, pure and dense flavors that are a highly beguiling blend of finesse and power, all wrapped in a robust yet finely detailed finish of stunning length. This is one of the very best examples of the appellation in 2009. Drink 2024+.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Echezeaux is pure silk. Black cherries, spices, licorice and tar are all woven together in a fabric of nearly indescribable elegance. All the elements fall into place as the Echezeaux captivates both the intellectual and hedonistic senses. This is a wine that impresses for its understated elegance. Readers won’t fine the drive of the Clos de Vougeot or the structure of the Richebourg. Instead, the Echezeaux possesses stunning textural finesse and phenomenal balance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 93+ (4/2012): Good deep, bright red. Very reduced nose is currently blocking the wine's primary fruits. Fatter but initially less sweet than the Clos de Vouget, with a bit of leathery funk to its dark berry, earth and iodine flavors. Began quite unforthcoming if rather suave, but gained significantly in sweetness and thickness with aeration. This will need at least seven or eight years of bottle aging or a lot of time in a decanter. Grivot believes that the very dense cork he used to seal this wine is largely responsible for its reductive character. |

WA 95+ (5/2011): The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 92+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Primary aromas of blackberry, wild herbs and pepper, along with a whiff of game. Dense and closed today, conveying a strong impression of power. There's a slightly sugary quality to the black raspberry fruit, but also a distinctly savory character to the notes of licorice, fresh herbs and underbrush. The cooler sites are a bit less 2009-typical, noted Nicolas Groffier, ". . . a bit 2005-like." Finishes very long, with substantial dusty tannins and a piquant hint of lemon rind.
BH 92 (1/2012): ( from a .97 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). This opens with noticeable reduction and though it doesn't dissipate immediately, it eventually recedes to the background where it doesn't overtly detract from the otherwise attractive mix of dark berry fruit, earth and rose petal aromas. The supple, round and delicious yet utterly serious medium-bodied flavors possess good verve and a sophisticated mouth feel and while this is not an especially concentrated or powerful example of this grand cru, it is beautifully balanced. An understated 2009 that, much like the Amoureuses, will drink well young yet should be capable of rewarding 7 to 10 years of cellar time. Drink 2017+. |

In contrast to its 1er siblings, this is really quite pretty and while there was a trace of reduction at first, it disappeared within 3 minutes so it's a non-issue for the Amoureuses. Otherwise, the nose is really quite pretty with the hallmark spice and wet stone nuances that add depth to the ripe yet cool and elegant red berry fruit aromas. There is a supple and very Chambollesque quality to the refined and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that offer good if not truly sensational depth and length. This is also relatively forward and while it will certainly age, I was surprised at how civilized it is already. Drink 2016+. |

BH 91-93 (1/2011): ( from a 1.5 ha parcel that was replanted sequentially - 1985, 1988 and 1989; the wine carries the qualifier of Musigni because it comes from a parcel of vines at the top of Clos de Vougeot, directly across from the vineyard of Musigny). Here the less obviously oaked nose runs more toward the red side of the fruit spectrum before merging into rich and seductively textured broad-shouldered flavors that are also blessed with ample amounts of dry extract that renders the supporting tannins almost invisible on the detailed, youthfully austere and solidly persistent finish. VM 96+ (4/2012): Bright medium red. Knockout soil-driven nose combines red cherry, cocoa powder, brown spices, dried flowers, lavender and minerals. The palate offers compelling high-pitched flavors of red fruits and flowers complemented by strong saline soil tones. Conveys a powerful impression of extract without any fat. This youthfully imploded wine magically combines power and finesse, finishing with Outstanding sappiness and thrust. It was hard to scrape this off my palate--not that I tried.
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambertin-Clos de Beze is unusually open and seductive. It flows with extraordinary finesse and pure elegance. White floral notes, cassis and spices wrap around the palate, adding tons of nuance. The firm tannins don’t quite allow the fruit to be fully expressive, but all that is needed here is time.
BH 93-95 (5/2011): A strikingly complex nose features an intense spiciness to the otherwise ripe, elegant and nuanced red berry liqueur aromas that are in keeping with the equally spicy and intense broad-shouldered and tautly muscular flavors, all wrapped in a mouth coating and very firm finish that delivers stunning persistence. I like the underlying sense of tension that adds vibrancy to the moderately austere and mineral-driven finale. This should be excellent in time. Drink 2024+. |

BH 90-93 (5/2011): This is one of the few wines to display noticeable reduction and it's enough to knock down the nose though my score assumes that this will be corrected before it is bottled. There is good richness and vibrancy to the solidly well-concentrated flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract though the palate impression of the finish is still quite firm, all wrapped in a backend that delivers excellent persistence. This is a bit more rough and tumble than one typically sees from a classic Griotte though it does not display any overt rusticity. Drink 2024+.
VM 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Griotte-Chambertin is sweet, sensual and inviting. Deceptively medium in body, the wine shows plenty of density. Flowers, cinnamon and menthol emerge in the glass as this sensual wine flows through to the finish. There is just a hint of rusticity on the close; otherwise, this is a fine, generous Burgundy. I very much like the balance and while this is certainly extremely rich and ripe, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness or undue weightiness. This explosive effort should be magnificent in time. WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Volnay Clos de Chene is a model of elegance. Weightless, pure and elegant, it succeeds in conveying notable flavor intensity with no sense of heaviness, something only Pinot Noir is capable of doing to this degree. The fresh, vibrant finish suggests the wine has many days of fine drinking ahead. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 91+ (4/2012): Good full red. Reticent nose hints at medicinal black cherry, blackberry and licorice; smells much tougher than the Clos des Ducs. Densely packed but quite tight (is this already shutting down?), with the medicinal character carrying through onto the palate. Compared to the Clos des Ducs, this wine shows a darker fruit character and no easy sweetness today. The tannins arrive late, then build. Lafarge continues to compare the 2009s to past years like 1985, 1966 and 1964. He noted that the '09s "gained in harmony and complexity during their last months of elevage." |

BH 94 (4/2012): This is aromatically a bit less elegant than the Mitans but it is more complex with cool red and blue pinot fruit, violet, earth and stone nuances introducing attractively rich and equally pure middle weight flavors that exhibit real verve on the mouth coating and exceptionally persistent finish. As usual, this is a classic Volnay that is built to age and will need every bit of 12 to 15 years to be at its best. In short, this is a knockout. Outstanding! Drink: 2021+.
WA 93-95 (5/2011): The estate’s 2009 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs saturates the palate with its deep, persistent fruit. The aromas and flavors build in the glass towards the rich, multi-dimensional finish. This shows marvelous staying power and fabulous overall balance. The Clos du Chateau des Ducs is more overtly fruit-driven and structured but perhaps a touch less aromatically expressive than the Mitans. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 92 (4/2012): Rather pale red. Highly aromatic, expressive scents of redcurrant, cherry, spices and flowers. Wonderfully suave and fine-grained, in the typically feminine style of this wine--and classic Volnay. Lovely pliant red fruit and licorice flavors saturate the mouth, with a saline element adding interest on the long finish. Shows an attractive light touch and supple tannins. This will go truffley with bottle aging. |

WA 96 (4/2012): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Reignots explodes onto the palate with dazzling richness and power. Black fruit tar, licorice and smoke are just some of the many aromas and flavors that stain the palate as this dark, brooding Burgundy shows off its pedigree. Layers of fruit build effortlessly to the huge, intense finish. Underlying veins of salinity give the wine its sense of proportion. In 2009 the Reignots is superb Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
BH 94 (1/2012): (the Liger-Belair vines in this small vineyard run from top to bottom whereas the others are situated in segments; Cathiard is on top, Grivot in the middle and Arnoux at the bottom.) This is not quite as floral as the Brûlees though it is perhaps even a bit fresher with a highly spiced nose that is very Vosne in character. The supple, round and beautifully well-delineated middle weight flavors seem to exude both a liquid minerality and plenty of dry extract that buffers the firm but sophisticated tannins on the tension-infused, focused and highly complex finish. This should be terrific and I really like the impeccable balance of this long and powerful yet strikingly refined effort. Drink 2024+. Outstanding!

BH 94-97 (1/2011): (from a .37 ha parcel in Les Veroilles of 40+ year old vines save for a very tiny parcel in Richebourg proper). This is ripe yet even more restrained, indeed to the point of reticence though aggressive swirling liberates the blackberry and cassis-infused nose that also possesses a huge array of spice and mineral nuances. The big-bodied, concentrated, intense and superbly powerful flavors are underpinned by very firm tannins that are rugged and robust though not rustic, all wrapped in a youthfully austere finish with plenty of underlying tension as you can really sense the energy here. This should be fantastic in time though note that plenty of time will definitely be required. Drink 2029+. Don't miss!
WA 91-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Richebourg is a rather subtle wine for this site. It shows good intensity in its dark red fruit, minerals and flowers. The finish is exceptionally long and elegant, which hints at the wine’s promise. Today the Richebourg is holding back much of its potential, but it looks to be a relatively feminine Burgundy from this vineyard. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034.

| BH 91-94 (1/2011): (from vines adjacent to those of Domaine de la Romanee Conti in Richebourg proper totaling .31 ha; 80% whole cluster vinification). A notably floral, spicy and very cool nose is trimmed in noticeable but reasonable wood and leads to very rich, round and velvety big-bodied and powerful flavors that culminate in a moderately oaked but strikingly long finish. Again, the oak is not subtle on the palate but there appears to be more than enough concentration to handle it. Drink 2024+. |

BH 91-93 (5/2011): Like the Taillepieds, this is also highly perfumed with rose petal, fresh red berries, wet stone and an earthy component that can also be found on the equally mineral-inflected, cool and pure flavors that evidence excellent detail and real verve on the delicious, intense and persistent finish. A lovely and understated Pommard of finesse. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

BH 92 (6/2012): I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Marechale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Drink 2014+. Outstanding!
WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale shows the more virile side of Pinot. Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. The wine’s masculine personality is quite a contrast to the seductiveness of Mugnier’s other 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 89-92 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry liqueur, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with an earthy nuance. Large-scaled, lush and sweet, with a creamy, chocolatey flavor saturating the palate. This big, slightly rough wine benefits from its substantial tannins, which help to balance the sweetness of the alcohol. The pHs of these grapes was the highest to date, noted Mugnier, but as there was so little malic acidity, the post-ML pH is now just a bit higher than average. Mugnier told me there would probably be no Clos des Forches bottling, as he needed to include some of the less-ripe juice in the Clos de la Marechale. (Incidentally, the very promising 2009 Marechale blanc, which had been racked into stainless steel tank in September and will be bottled in January, was dry, powerful, complex and gripping, with excellent energy and acidity for the vintage.) |

BH 91-93 (1/2011): A wonderfully elegant nose of notably ripe red cherry liqueur cut with wet stone and warm earth notes that can also be found on the utterly delicious, concentrated and sappy middle weight flavors that possess excellent depth on the balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Like the Cuvee des Alouettes, I can't ever remember seeing a better vintage for this wine at this early stage. Drink 2017+. Outstanding!
WA 90-92 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Charmes is an immediate wine. The aromatics alone are beautifully open and expressive. The fruit shows terrific delineation, depth and nuance with notable silkiness and elegance. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. |

Very mild reduction reduces the expressiveness of the nose yet it is still relatively easy to discern that the dark berry fruit is ripe and nuanced by plenty of spice notes that can also be found on the rich and palate staining velvety flavors that possess imposing size and weight as well as a seemingly endless reserve of dry extract that buffers the firm tannic spine on the wonderfully long finish. This is a big yet balanced wine that possesses excellent energy with plenty of underlying tension and about the only nit is a hint of warmth on the powerful and driving finish. This should be most impressive in time if you have the patience to wait. Drink 2026+. |

| VM 94+ (4/2012): Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherries macerated in alcohol, mocha and wild herbs. Generous, pliant and highly concentrated, with lovely floral, mineral and minty high notes lifting the ripe cherry fruit. Finishes tactile, chewy and very long, with noble, sweet tannins and hints of game and menthol. These vines date back to 1885, but Philippe Roty is quick to point out that there has been a lot of repiquage (replanting of individual vines as they die) along the way. I would not be surprised if this wine merited a higher score 10 or 15 years down the road. |

BH 90 (1/2012): (contains some premier cru juice from Fuees). This is also quite fresh and bright if not quite as ripe with high-toned and very Chambolle-like red berry fruit and wet stone aromas that lead to lacy, pure and refined middle weight flavors that are the epitome of finesse and harmony. This is not only a lovely villages but it's also one that is less obviously marked by the vintage. Excellent and this too is recommended. Drink 2015+. Outstanding!
WA 90 (4/2012): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny comes across as quite ripe and racy next to the 2010. Flowers, sweet spices and licorice add lovely complexity to the super-ripe dark red fruit. The Chambolle impresses for its balance and soft, inviting finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.
VM 90 (4/2012): Medium red. Ripe raspberry and chocolate on the nose and palate. Plush, pliant and sweet; wonderfully full, seamless and creamy for village wine. Finishes with smooth, chocolatey tannins and excellent length. Christophe Roumier compared his 2009s to his 1990s, saying that he believed the wines would "build up new flavors with aging." He told me that he wouldn't broach even this village offering for a few years. |

| BH 93 (1/2012): ( from 55+ year old vines totaling .29 ha with .125 ha in Charmes and the other .165 ha in Mazoyères.) A highly expressive and quite densely fruited nose features aromas of red berry liqueur, earth and underbrush. Similarly, there is plenty of substance to the big, rich and generous broad-shouldered flavors that possess Outstanding depth of material, indeed there is so much sap that the very firm tannic spine is presently almost invisible on the textured, balanced and superbly long finish. Somewhat curiously for such a big wine, this will be approachable young due to the abundance of sap but should age brilliantly well. I should note that normally this is easily the most complex wine in the Serafin range but while this is certainly blessed with the most underlying material, for the moment it displays no more overall complexity than does the Cazetiers. It very well may in time and if so my score will be quite rightly viewed as overly conservative. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 94 (1/2012): Here the nose is actually quite similar to that of the Charmes though it is slightly more deeply pitched. There is superb richness to the round and impressively concentrated big-bodied flavors that are both bigger and firmer with robust and moderately rustic tannins that are in keeping with the broad-scaled, intense and powerful finish. This isn't as refined as the Charmes but it is a picture perfect version of a classic Mazoyères. Well worth considering as this is excellent though note that plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2024+. |

| BH 95 (1/2012): A ripe yet restrained, cool and surprisingly airy given the nature of the vintage displays a highly complex nose of red currant, blue berry, dark berries and ample minerality that continues onto the relatively accessible medium weight plus flavors that possess a plenitude of mouth coating dry extract. This is gorgeously, indeed almost painfully intense with explosive power to the austere and driving finish. This does a slow but inexorable build from the mid-palate and despite all of the muscle, this is actually a wine of balance and refinement. Most impressive. |

WA 97 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous.
BH 96 (1/2012): A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine. Drink 2029+.
VM 95+ (4/2012): Good bright, deep red. Raspberry liqueur, crushed rock and vanillin oak on the suave, subdued nose; shows the greatest lift of these 2009s. Superconcentrated and creamy but light on its feet, displaying terrific energy and sappiness for 2009. Gained in verve with aeration, with high-pitched, tangy flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, flowers and minerals spreading out to saturate the mouth. With its finishing perfume and taste of limestone, this really transcends the vintage. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.)
