Tasting Notes:
VM 93-96 (2/2013): Good deep red. A bit darker on the nose than the grand crus from Gevrey-Chambertin, offering explosive aromas of crushed raspberry, black cherry, exotic spices and a touch of smoke. Compellingly rich and seamless in the mouth, with terrific sappy verve to the urgent flavors of red berries, minerals and game. The very long, slowly rising finish boasts Outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): As is usually the case with this wine when it's young, the nose is restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling liberates aromas of earth, spice, red currant and hints of the sauvage. And instead of the robust and well-muscled mid-palate there is an almost caressing mouth feel to the full-bodied yet refined flavors because while the supporting tannins are definitely firm and dense they are also quite finely-grained. There is excellent length to the moderately austere, tight, focused and linear finish that delivers Outstanding persistence. Drink 2030+. Don't miss!

BH 92-95 (1/2008): A completely backward but superbly complex nose displays layered aromas that run to game and underbrush as well as ripe red and dark berry fruit trimmed in a bit of wood toast that give way to rich, sweet and mouth coating big-bodied flavors that possess plenty of muscle and real volume on the explosive, textured and sappy finish that is impressively concentrated and wonderfully long. There is ample structure here as well though it's largely buffered by all of the mid-palate extract and I particularly like the depth. A serious wine that will live for decades. Drink 2021+. Don't miss!
VM 92+ (4/2009): Bright medium red. Captivating but reduced aromas of raspberry, smoked meat, dried flowers and spices. Juicy and vibrant but youthfully unforthcoming, offering excellent energy and grip to its intense raspberry, spice and stone flavors. Best today on the very long, lively aftertaste, which features substantial dusty tannins and terrific architecture for aging. I would not be surprised if this merited a score in the mid-90s a decade from now. |

BH 93-95 (1/2013): (from a 1.29 ha parcel). An exuberantly spicy, cool and airy nose that mixes a variety of wild red berries, humus and earth nuances where the latter component is also well-represented on the solidly well-detailed and powerful medium weight plus flavors that possess superb length. This is a big but not burly Bèze that is actually more a wine of finesse than outsized power and weight. Drink 2026+. Don't miss!
VM 93-95 (2/2013): Good deep red. Deeply pitched, slightly reduced nose dominated by smoky minerality, musky soil tones, game bird, gunflint and dried rose. Thick, sweet and very intense, offering terrific smoky, soil-driven complexity but not yet displaying its underlying fruit. Finishes with big, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. Doesn't yet show the sheer eclat of the Mazis, but this may be going through an awkward stage. |

| BH 95-98 (1/2012): This is aromatically similar to the "regular" cuvee of the Clos de Bèze but not identical as it's slightly spicier and notably more restrained, indeed even backward. The big-bodied, opulent and exceptionally rich flavors enjoy huge depth of material that renders the firm and ripe tannins almost invisible at present though I expect that they will become much more prominent in time. This stunningly long and perfumed effort will require at least 20 years of cellar time before it can fully resolve its structure. Until then, lots of patience will be necessary for this 'wow' wine to arrive at its full maturity. Drink 2030+. |

| BH 92-94 (1/2011): Mild wood influence sets off a highly complex nose comprised of fresh red currant and blue pinot fruit aromas that are liberally laced with warm earth and a sauvage hint that carries over to the relatively refined and supple yet entirely serious, powerful and concentrated flavors that deliver outstanding length. Despite the fact that the underlying tannins are finer than usual, this is not to say that it is an elegant wine though it is less youthfully austere than I typically find with this wine. BH 92-94 (1/2013): (blended from 3 separate parcels). An attractively complex and unusually refined nose speaks of red currant, kirsch, soft earth and a hint of wood spice. There is a refined mouth feel to the larger-scaled flavors thanks to the fine grain of the ripe and well-integrated tannins on the mildly austere and impressively long, indeed even explosive finish. This is terrific and the backend offers the same excellent depth the nose promises. Lovely stuff. Drink 2026+.
VM 90-93 (2/2013): Good bright, deep red. Cherry, rose petal, mocha and game on the nose, plus a hint of metallic minerality. Dense, sappy and youthfully tight; less expansive today than the Echezeaux and more peppery too. Has a serious spine for aging but seems a tad dry in the early going. |

VM 97+ (4/2012): Good bright dark red. Perfumed, profound aromas and flavors of red cherry, rose oil, minerals and crushed stone, with darker berries emerging with air. Like liquid velvet on the palate--lush dense and incredibly fine-grained. Most impressive today on the extraordinary expanding, palate-staining finish, which rises to a crescendo of spices and minerals. A wine of great thrust and chewiness, this is hard to scrape off the palate. An essence of Corton grand cru.
BH 93-96 (1/2011): This sports one of the ripest noses in the entire range with distinctly spicy notes adding interest to the admirably fresh plum and mocha suffused aromas that precede highly energetic, concentrated and big-bodied flavors that are extremely concentrated and the dry extract imparts a seductive texture to the mildly austere, balanced and hugely long finish. This is one of the most promising vintages of this wine that I have ever seen but note that this will definitely not be an early drinker as the supporting structure is more than simply firm. Drink 2029+. |

BH 93-95 (1/2014): The quality of this wine has skyrocketed over the past few vintages; while it was always very good, it has now become one of the most consistent performers in the Faiveley portfolio. There is quite a bit of wood influence at present and it fights a bit with the spicy dark berry fruit aromas that exhibit plenty of earth and game character. The impressively scaled and concentrated broad-shouldered flavors possess an opulent yet entirely serious mouth feel before culminating in a balanced, explosively and tremendously persistent finish. This is a bit woody today yet the underlying material is such that it seems all but evident that it will successfully integrate the oak in time. Drink 2032+. Don't miss!
VM 93-96 (1/2014): Bright, deep red. Deep aromas of black cherry, crushed rock and graphite. Dense, sappy and energetic, offering Outstanding depth to its soil-driven black cherry and saline flavors. Delivers an uncanny combination of chewy texture and verve. Finishes with palate-staining length and lift, as tactile as a solid. A great vin de terroir for the cellar. |

BH 93-95 (1/2015): A generous dollop of moderately toasty oak mixes with the highly layered nose of black cherry, cassis, warm earth and an impressive array of sauvage and underbrush notes. There is excellent richness to the overtly powerful and muscular flavors that possess an imposing sense of scale that continues onto the textured and mouth coating finish. Like several of the wines in the range in 2013 this is a big but not really massive wine that retains a sense of proportion even though the underlying structure is quite firm. This will need plenty of patience however. Drink 2028+. Don't miss!
VM 92+ (3/2016): Full medium red. A note of reduction dissipated to show complex, inviting aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, dried flowers, spices and caraway seed. Dense, dry and gripping, with strong saline minerality giving it a distinctly serious mien. This youthfully uncompromising wine took on more body with aeration and finishes firmly tannic and very long. Very 2013 in its impression of salinity and extract. Stephen Tanzer. |

The lush, even opulent flavors certainly don't lack for size, weight and power as they coat the palate while buffering the notably firm tannic spine on the muscular, driving and wonderfully persistent finish. | BH 96 (5/2018): An extremely ripe nose manages to avoid any sense of surmaturite on the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and lilac scents. This is a massive wine, with huge mid-palate concentration, power and muscle that terminates in a borderline painfully intense finale that both coats the palate and lasts for minutes. I take considerable pains to point out however that this ultra-structured and overtly austere effort is not only built for the long haul but for the very long haul. I have suggested an initial drinking window of 30 years from now but it may very well be longer. In sum, this brilliant effort is very old school Corton that I wouldn't even consider opening for at least 10 years. Try from 2035+. |

BH 93-96 (1/2012): A very deeply pitched nose that displays fresh red and dark berry fruit and floral aromas along with notes of the sauvage that continue over to the serious and very solidly structured big-bodied flavors. This is an impressively scaled wine yet the supporting tannins are relatively fine though quite dense and as such, the overall impression is one of robust power even if it is refined in its delivery. This is going to require a long cellar stay but it should be magnificent when it finally emerges. (Drink starting 2028).
VM 92-95 (1/2012): Good deep red. Reduced aromas of game and silex reminded me of a Corton grand cru. Fat and sweet but a bit monolithic today compared to the Latricieres, without quite the same impression of inner-palate energy of delineation. Best today on the very long, thick, unflagging finish. VM 93-96 (2/2013): Bright, deep red. Very deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke and crushed rock. At once penetrating and utterly fine-grained; explosive sappy perfume fills the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Pinot just doesn't pull off this trick anywhere but in Burgundy's top sites. Finishes with noble tannins and Outstanding palate-staining length.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): (from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the vines total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet hint of wood allows the slightly riper and definitely more sauvage aromas of earth, humus, dark berries and soft spice notes to shine. There is excellent power to the robust and broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with structure-buffering dry extract that coats the palate on the mineral-driven, punchy and seriously persistent finish. This is not quite as austere as the Latricières though note that here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2026+. Don't miss! |

JM 93 (9/2017): Medium deep red- purple. The first nose speaks more of oak than wine. The palate has a robust core of opulent fruit allied to a mineral backbone, still very good oak integration and respectable length. A wine in its infancy but with good potential. |

| BH 92 (4/2014): ( the 5+ ha Clos is composed of approximately 80% Petits Epenots and 20% Grands Epenots; the vine ages run from 18 to 75+ years of age; as is typically the case here, the 2011 Clos des Epeneaux was segregated into several different cuvees based on vineyard location and then blended in varying proportions.) This is really quite expressive for a young Clos des Epeneaux with its relatively refined and pure nose of red currant, dried flowers, iron-inflected earth and soft spice scents. There is good power and plenty of punch to the broad-shouldered and muscular medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the perfectly balanced and highly persistent finish that displays moderate austerity. This is really very impressive and will need at least 10 to 12 years to be at its best. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

An exquisitely fresh and pure nose of cool red currant and mineral reduction slides gracefully into detailed, precise and restrained medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent verve and a taut muscularity. This really brims with minerality on the mouth coating finish that delivers super length. Terrific. Drink 2023+.
VM 91-94 (2/2013): Good deep red-ruby. Cool aromas and flavors of raspberry, red cherry and crushed rock lifted by pepper and herbs. Pure, juicy and precise if a bit youthfully imploded, but already showing terrific sappy intensity. Finishes very long and perfumed, with a serious tannic spine. Promises to be Lachaux's best vintage yet for this cuvee, which he initiated with the 2008 after purchasing these old vines from Christopher Newman. |

BH 90-93 (1/2013): A highly spiced nose of both red and black pinot fruit is trimmed in hints of earth and sandalwood. The very generous and impressively rich medium weight flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that imparts a beguilingly seductive texture to the lush, balanced and persistent finish. This is first rate as Chaumes rarely possesses this level of potential quality. Drink 2018+. Outstanding!
VM 90-93 (2/2013): (racked and sulfited): Good bright, dark red. Raspberry, spices, flowers and licorice on the scented nose. Dense, sweet and creamy, with a dominant flavor of sappy maraschino cherry. Finishes impressively long and palate-saturating, with ripe tannins and good medicinal reserve. Lachaux noted that this cuvee used to be harder, but is very supple in both 2011 and 2010. Excellent potential. |

VM 88 (3/2014): The 2011 Bourgogne is a pretty entry-level offering from Denis Bachelet. Blue/purplish fruit, sweet tobacco and licorice are some of the notes that inform the supple, easygoing finish. This is a terrific wine in its class. (Drink between 2014-2016). Antonio Galloni.
WA 88 (2/2014): The entry-level 2011 Bourgogne Rouge has a lovely leafy bouquet with dark earthy fruit that feels natural and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with raspberry and strawberry fruit on the entry, fine tannins and a pleasant supple finish. This is uncomplicated and totally delicious. Drink now-2016. |

VM 92+ (4/2014): (12.6% after chaptalization): Medium red. Dark berries, licorice and a peppery note on the nose. Concentrated and youthfully tight, with a distinctly pungent quality to its pomegranate flavor. Has power and thrust for a moderately ripe wine. Best today on the juicy finish, which mounts slowly and builds well. This needs at least six or seven years of cellaring.
BH 92 (1/2014): (From a .85 ha parcel). A relatively high-toned nose of sour cherry, raspberry, wet stone and hints of underbrush lead to cool, pure and impressively precise flavors that ooze a fine minerality on the delicious and stylish finish. This is a powerful but classy wine with plenty of concentration though note that this will likely need at least 6 years to be approachable and fully 9 to 12 to realize its full potential. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

The beguilingly textured and well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess a silky mouth feel, all wrapped in a solidly persistent and impeccably well-balanced finish. This is not more than moderately ripe but it avoids auterity plus there is so much energy that one just really feels like drinking it. While this could certainly be profitably held for another 3 to 5 years to develop a bit more depth, it could easily be enjoyed young. Try from 2018+. |

BH 94 (4/2013): (near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Somewhat counterintuitively this possesses riper fruit with distinct sauvage notes to the humus and mineral-inflected, brooding and very cool wild dark berry fruit aromas. There is excellent power to the driving and highly energetic, stony and robust flavors that display impressive mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in an austere, explosive and strikingly long finish. This is a serious wine but then again, isn’t Chambertin virtually always serious in its youth? Drink 2026+.
VM 92-95 (2/2013): Good dark red. Very pure but reticent aromas of dark berries, mocha and sandalwood; smells creamy. Then lush and seamless in the mouth, but with great energy to the flavors of black cherry clafouti, dark chocolate, licorice and pepper. The explosive, slowly mounting finish features substantial fine-grained tannins and black fruit and pepper elements complicated by saline minerality. |

BH 94 (4/2013): (from a .60 ha parcel). In contrast to the jovial expressiveness of the prior wines this is much more reserved with its ripe yet cool aromas of dark berry fruit liqueur, spice and wet stone. The silky and equally cool and restrained middle weight flavors offer Outstanding definition on the rich, energetic and hugely long saline-infused finish. This is one seriously impressive Caillerets but note well that it’s built to age. Drink 2023+.
VM 93+ (3/2014): Bright, dark red. Ripe, deep, multifaceted nose offers black cherry, raspberry, licorice, earth, gunflint and smoky minerality. Much denser than the Chevrets, showing terrific concentration and balance to its dark fruit, mineral and spice flavors. Finishes spicy, chewy and very long, with serious fine-grained tannins and sexy hints of pepper and herbs. Really perfectly integrated acidity here. This was a knockout from barrel a year ago and has been bottled with its tightly coiled spring intact. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (1/2013): As complex as the Pruliers is, the Les Cailles ratchets it up yet another notch with its spicy and pure blend of cassis, plum, violet and distinct iron-infused earth. There is excellent richness to the cool and equally pure medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent focus on the explosively long finish. The tannins are dense but quite fine and this offers outstanding upside development potential. (Drink starting 2023).
VM 0-93 (1/2013): Good full, bright red. Very ripe, deep nose offers pomegranate, cranberry and pungent crushed-stone minerality. Very rich and silky; a step up in density from the Pruliers. Thick and chocolatey but with very good lift and verve. Finishes with complex soil tones and serious tannins that will require five or six years of cellaring. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles 2011 offers quite prominent and luscious (for the vintage) fruit on the nose with generous oak, however it is deftly integrated with the succulent, tart red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins. Again, I find that the oak is a little conspicuous, though underneath there is plenty of candied red fruit interlaced with orange peel and tangerine on the feminine, lithe finish. Give this two or three years in bottle and you will have a pretty Nuits Saint Georges. |

VM 92+ (3/2014): Good bright red. Complex, ripe aromas of raspberry, cherry, iron, minerals, spices, pepper and truffley underbrush. The sweetest, supplest and most refined of these 2011s, offering lovely harmonious acidity to its red fruit, red licorice and mineral flavors. Really coats the mouth and vibrates on the long, firmly tannic finish, which features a late burst of ripe but lively red fruits. Winemaker Yves Confuron says the 2011s here have similar precision to the 2010s but more middle, although he believes that the wines have shut down following the September 2013 bottling.
BH 92 (4/2014): (from a 1.07 ha parcel in Rugiens-Hauts) There is really lovely complexity to the cool, restrained and elegant aromas of ripe red and blue pinot fruit and wet stone nuances that enjoy added refinement from the presence of dried floral elements though the stems are presently visible. There is a suave, round and sophisticated mouth feel to the intensely mineral-driven flavors that are shaped by firm and dense yet fine-grained tannins, all wrapped in a mocha-inflected finish. This is an unusually ripe 2011 and interestingly it doesn't have the same level of complexity as the Epenots, or in any event not yet. Note well that plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2023+. Outstanding!
WA 89 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens ‘11 has quite an intense, slightly tinny bouquet with tart red cherries, orange zest and damp earthy aromas. The definition is quite impressive. The palate is medium-bodied with bold and assertive tannins and there is real weight in the mouth. It is endowed with plenty of oak, although there is as much fruit tannin as wood on the austere finish. | BH 93 (4/2013): Much like the Musigny, this is really beautifully spicy but here there are intense earth and sauvage undertones to the mostly wild red berry fruit scents. There is excellent volume and plenty of minerality to the focused, energetic and overtly powerful large-scaled flavors that culminate in an austere finish that displays noticeable gas which accentuates the firmness of the tannins. Even so, this is clearly a long-distance runner and like the Griotte, I would strongly advise buying this only with the intent to cellar it for at least a decade. Drink 2023+. |

BH 93-95 (1/2013): A deft touch of wood frames an intensely earthy, complex and notably ripe nose that features notes of spice, plum and black currant. There is excellent richness, size, weight and muscle to the vibrant middle weight plus flavors that exude a fine extract on the mineral-driven finish that offers extraordinarily good length. This is primary to the point of being quite backward yet it is not hard or aggressive as the balance of structural elements is impeccable. Drink 2023+.
VM 92-94 (2/2013): Good medium red. Briary, smoky dark raspberry, minerals and flowers on the nose, plus a whiff of horseradish. Rich, dry and suave but youthfully closed, with pepper and spice notes running through to the firm aftertaste. This will be sweetened and opened up by a racking, but Seysses only planned to do this prior to the bottling. He admits that it's currently "angry"; it's certainly tricky to taste today. |

Here too an adroit application of wood serves as a discreet foil for the more obvious floral aromas that enjoy added scope from the presence of pure, spicy and highly complex red and dark berry scents. There is an abundance of mouth coating extract that imparts a suave, even lush character to the very rich medium-bodied flavors that are an exercise in finesse and refinement while offering controlled power and Outstanding length. A classic Clos St. Denis. Drink 2026+.
VM 93-96 (2/2013): (a roughly 50/50 blend of fruit planted in the early 1950s and a more recent 1991 planting, although Seysses told me that some of the 1991 clones barely produce any fruit): Good bright medium. Pretty perfume of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and rose petal. Juicy and intense if a bit youthfully imploded, showing lovely sappy energy to the spicy red fruit and raspberry flavors. This wonderfully suave, palate-coating midweight offers enticing sweetness and precision, not to mention subtle power. Dense, aromatic and very long on the aftertaste. Really quintessential Clos Saint-Denis, and sure to gain in flesh over the next 8 to 10 years. |

A bit darker on the nose than the grand crus from Gevrey-Chambertin, offering explosive aromas of crushed raspberry, black cherry, exotic spices and a touch of smoke. Compellingly rich and seamless in the mouth, with terrific sappy verve to the urgent flavors of red berries, minerals and game. The very long, slowly rising finish boasts Outstanding energy and thrust and saturates the mouth with sweet perfume.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): As is usually the case with this wine when it's young, the nose is restrained to the point of being almost mute though aggressive swirling liberates aromas of earth, spice, red currant and hints of the sauvage. And instead of the robust and well-muscled mid-palate there is an almost caressing mouth feel to the full-bodied yet refined flavors because while the supporting tannins are definitely firm and dense they are also quite finely-grained. There is excellent length to the moderately austere, tight, focused and linear finish that delivers Outstanding persistence. Drink 2030+. Don't miss! |

VM 93-96 (2/2013): Bright, deep red. Very deep aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke and crushed rock. At once penetrating and utterly fine-grained; explosive sappy perfume fills the mouth without leaving any impression of weight. Pinot just doesn't pull off this trick anywhere but in Burgundy's top sites. Finishes with noble tannins and Outstanding palate-staining length.
BH 92-95 (1/2013): (from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the vines total a remarkable 1.20 ha). A discreet hint of wood allows the slightly riper and definitely more sauvage aromas of earth, humus, dark berries and soft spice notes to shine. There is excellent power to the robust and broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with structure-buffering dry extract that coats the palate on the mineral-driven, punchy and seriously persistent finish. This is not quite as austere as the Latricières though note that here too plenty of patience will be required. Drink 2026+. Don't miss! |

| WA 93 (8/2014): Robert Groffier’s 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses was tasted blind in a line-up of 2011 Amoureuses in Holland. It has a deep ruby color, but the nose is far more backward than the first two wines, a little more herbaceous and tertiary (perhaps with some more stem addition?) but still well-defined. But it is certainly less flamboyant than Drouhin and Lucien le Moine’s Amoureuses ’11, though returning on my second run-through, the wine unfurls supremely well and gains intensity. The palate is very intense and very fresh, very citric with good tension, although it does not quite have the complexity that the aromatics suggest. Reticent and masculine, this needs 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted June 2014. |

The most complex and complete of these 2011s on the nose, offering scents of black cherry, menthol, wild herbs and sexy underbrush; sappy and ripe but with noteworthy medicinal reserve. Silky on entry, then thick, bright and highly concentrated, with the violet and licorice lift and firm spine of acidity of a top Cote de Nuits wine. Lovely focus and dark fruit intensity here. Finishes bright and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins. This should age beautifully.
BH 91 (4/2014): (From 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock). An expressive floral-infused nose displays elegant, pure and airy essence of red pinot fruit and herbal tea scents. There is a seductive texture to the soil and mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that evidence a saline component on the complex, balanced and impressively lingering finish. This is a lovely wine that should offer up to a decade of development potential. Drink 2019+. Outstanding!
WA 91 (8/2013): Dominique waited long for the 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-du-Milieu to settle in tank so that filtration is not necessary. It has a broody bouquet with dark cherry, boysenberry and scents of wild hedgerow. The palate is taut and pointed on the entry with a silver thread of acidity that is threaded though the introverted dark plum and boysenberry fruit. More masculine in nature, but still nicely focused on the finish, this will repay four or five years in the cellar. |

VM 93 (3/2014): Mugneret-Gibourg's 2011 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Chaignots is remarkably polished and refined in this vintage. Sweet rose petals, spices and red berries emerge from a gracious Burgundy that shows the more finessed side of Nuits. This is one of the more classically structured 2011s readers will come across. Today, the Chaignots is drop-dead gorgeous. Dried rose petals, sage, mint and crushed raspberries linger on the close. Antonio Galloni.
WA 93 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. I appreciate the purity and floral nature of Mugneret-Gibourg’s Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Chaignots, which is well defined and seems to blossom on the glass. It feels natural and nicely focused, plenty of mulberry and raspberry fruit emerging as it opens. The palate is very well balanced with supple red cherries, spice, gingerbread and white pepper - a really cerebral Les Chaignots. There is very good weight here, the finish blessed with roiling intensity. Excellent.
BH 92 (1/2014): A discreet application of wood allows the ripe aromas of cassis, earth and black cherry to be appreciated. The suave, round and opulent flavors possess a very supple and accessible mid-palate before culminating in a mouth coating and lingering finish that evidences just a hint of rusticity. Excellent. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

| WA 95 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Laurent Ponsot’s Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes '11 is reticent at first and demands coaxing, although it repays the patient imbiber with lively floral scents that are entwined with strawberry pastilles and cranberry. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy and almost corpulent entry, at least for a 2011 Côte de Nuits. There is admirable depth here with fleshy strawberry and red cherry notes infused with fennel and sage. It lingers for a very long time, which is quite unusual for this vintage. While it needs another few years to completely coalesce, it will be worth the wait. |

VM 87-90 (2/2013): Bright ruby-red. Wild, musky aromas of dark berries and spices come across as a bit dull. VM 94 (4/2014): Good dark red. Expressive, high-toned nose shows a leesy complexity to the aromas of cherry, flowers, soil and what Patrick Landanger called "blood peach." The palate offers uncanny energy and perfume, with sweet fruit lifted by spices and flowers. Lovely juiciness and class here. A wonderful Corton grand cru. Landanger did a much better job timing the harvest here than he did in 2012.
BH 93 (4/2013): ( from a .5 ha parcel). A slightly riper set of red and black pinot fruit aromas enjoys added latitude by the presence of strong earth, wet stone and a touch of the sauvage. There is a sleek muscularity to the rich, intense and big-bodied flavors that also exude a fine minerality that adds a sense of lift and energy on the focused, intense and impressively persistent finish. As it almost always is, this is quite a refined wine in the context of the universe of Corton grands crus and this impression is also abetted by the presence of very fine-grained tannins. WA 92 (2/2014): The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras has blacker and earthier fruit compared to the village cru, but here there is more volume and intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, slightly grainy tannins. There is lovely balance here: a little more forward than I was expecting, but generous with impressive complexity on the finish. This forms a fine introduction to the delights of Christophe’s wines. Drink 2016-2030.
VM 92 (4/2014): Good bright red. Exotic red berry liqueur, flowers, passion fruit and peach on the nose. Fat and sweet for this cru; softer and less refined than the 2012 version. Still, this shows better inner-mouth tension than the Combottes and finishes firmer, with chewy tannins.
BH 91 (1/2014): (From a 1.75 ha parcel of vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age). A gorgeously perfumed and intensely floral-suffused nose evidences hints of stone, red berries, anise and a bit of earth. There is really lovely detail and intensity to the precise, dusty and tension-filled medium-bodied flavors that exude a fine minerality on the mouth coating, linear, mildly austere and highly persistent finish where a saline nuance appears. This is quite good. Drink 2021+. Outstanding! |

VM 91 (3/2014): Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.
BH 89-92 (1/2013): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish. Drink 2019+.
VM 89-92 (1/2013): (two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey.

Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back. |

VM 95+ (4/2014): Deep, dark red. An elixir of dark berries on the nose, with complicating notes of crushed stone, menthol and flowers. Thick but weightless and youthfully imploded, with an element of spicy acidity giving Outstanding cut and primary character to the blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors. Finishes dense and strong, with powerful tannic support and late hints of espresso and bitter chocolate. Fully ripe in the context of the vintage, and built for an extended evolution in bottle.
BH 94 (1/2014): A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. Drink 2029+.
WA 92 (8/2013): The 2011 Musigny Vieille Vignes Grand Cru was picked around mid-harvest during the first week of September. It has a more floral bouquet compared to the Bonnes-Mares with scents of dried rose petals and a touch of violet infusing the dark cherry and pomegranate fruit profile. The palate is supple in texture, lithe in the mouth with fine tannins, much more feminine than the Bonnes-Mares (usually I find it the other way round.) The mouth is tingling with salted licorice and white pepper on the aftertaste. Impressive for sure, but I need it to show a bit of soul. Drink 2015-2025. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity.
