VM 95+ (11/2014): Healthy deep red. Black raspberry, cherry pit, crushed stone and smoky minerals on the almost liqueur-like nose. Large-scaled, very ripe and palate-staining, with creamy flavors of bigarot cherry, coffee and sweet oak dominating. More classically 2012 in style than the tauter Clos Saint-Jacques, finishing with substantial ripe tannins and superb length. (Drink between 2027-2042). Stephen Tanzer.
BH 95 (4/2024): A highly spiced and exceptionally fresh, ripe and airy nose reflects a touch of maturity while mixing a wide variety of mostly red berry fruit aromas though there are background notes of plum, cassis, lavender and oak. The broad-shouldered flavors possess a seductive texture thanks to the copious amounts of dry extract that push the still moderately firm tannic spine to the background on the wonderfully long, balanced and lightly austere finale. I very much like the concentration here as well as the vibrancy and this is dry in the best sense of the term and make clear that this is still on the way up. With that said, it's not so far away from its apogee that opening a bottle now should be out of the question. In sum, this is excellent and should only improve from here.. Drink 2029+.
WA 97 (10/2015): Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru has a scintillating, effervescent nose, the new oak beautifully interwoven into the complex red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate scents. There is wonderful definition here. The palate is very well balanced with well judged acidity that cuts a swathe through the structured red berry fruit. This is a serious Clos-de-Bèze reserved for long-term ageing. Quite brilliant. |

BH 97 (1/2021): Slightly more evident, though still quite subtle, wood frames the even spicier aromas of liqueur-like red and dark berry fruit, plum, anise, earth and lilac nuances. Here too there is a relatively supple mid-palate mouthfeel to the slightly finer broad-shouldered flavors that possess a gorgeous texture, all wrapped in a classy, sophisticated, stony, powerful and hugely long finish. This too is a knock-out and a one that should evolve glacially over a 20 to 30-year period as it's even a bit firmer than the Chambertin, which rarely occurs in my experience. (Drink starting 2040).
VM 96+ (11/2022): The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a magnificent bouquet. Dark berry fruit, crushed roses, minerals and incense soar from the glass. Wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, dark berry fruit laced with white pepper and allspice, building in the mouth to a multi-dimensional finish that lingers tenderly. Outstanding. BH 98 (1/2022): Equally subtle wood frames the even spicier if slightly riper nose that reflects a layered blend of red currant, violet, rose petal, earth and a whisper of exotic tea. The full-bodied if slightly less concentrated flavors also reflect an abundance of minerality on the firm, serious and equally well-balanced, youthfully austere and hugely long finale. I usually prefer one or the other [Chambertin] at this stage each year but in 2019, while the two wines are noticeably different, it's not clear which will ultimately be the more interesting. In sum, this is a choice but one where there is no wrong answer as this too is brilliant! (Drink starting 2041).
VM 94+ (12/2023): The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a little more concentration and what seems like more extraction on the nose than Faiveley's. Dark berry fruit, incense and veins of blue fruit emerge, perhaps needing just to dial up the delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and flavors of layered red fruit mixed with blood orange and a pinch of cinnamon. Impressive in its weight and density, this is a Clos-de-Bèze built for long term aging and the zestiness/energy should see it mature with style. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting. VM 91 (3/2014): Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.
BH 89-92 (1/2013): (from a 1.4 ha parcel of roughly 20 year old vines that is situated one-third in Charmes proper and the remainder in Mazoyères) In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish. Drink 2019+.
VM 89-92 (1/2013): (two-thirds from Mazoyeres): Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey.
WA 90 (11/2014): Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and plenty of tertiary fruit, foursquare and a little austere on the saline, angular finish that does improve in the glass. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back. |

VM 94 (2/2026): The 2012 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a lovely bouquet with floral, rose petal and iris flower scents percolating through the ripe red fruit, superb delineation and focus, with hints of bay leaf and thyme in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, by no means powerful, though unequivocally tensile with a lightly spiced, quite tender finish. Impressive length and overall, a very commendable wine for the vintage. (Drink between 2026-2045). Neal Martin.
BH 92 (11/2025): A maturing and beautifully elegant essence of red berry fruit suffused nose enjoys added breadth in the form of spice, earth and gentle floral nuances. I very much like the sense of freshness and vivacity to the medium weight plus flavors that possess fine detail and a hint of minerality that continues onto the silky and saline-inflected finish. At 13 years of age, this is not far from its apogee but another 2 to 5 years of keeping should see this understated effort at its best. Lovely. Tasted twice in the last year with consistent notes. Drink 2027+. |

| BH 93 (4/2015): A brooding yet softly perfumed nose features a pretty mix of both red and dark berry aromas that are just beginning to display some secondary development along with background nuances of spice and exotic tea. The delicious and relatively accessible medium-bodied flavors exude a discreet minerality on the complex, balanced and lingering finish where the buried structure arrives just at the end. For my taste this definitely hasn't yet arrived at its peak though the excellent mid-palate density would easily allow this beauty to be enjoyed now. That said I would advise holding this for another 5ish years first. In sum, this is altogether lovely as about the only nit is a finishing hint of warmth. (Drink starting 2021) |

VM 88-90 (1/2014): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin is soft, silky and delicate on the palate. Sweet red berries, mint and floral notes meld together nicely in the glass. Today the 2012 is solid, if not quite the overachiever it can be.
BH 87-90 (1/2014): (from 7 different vineyards located primarily in the dejection cone east of the village.)An elegant and pure nose features aromas of various wild red berries and plenty of earth and sauvage character. A restrained and cool mouth feel characterizes the lightly mineral and saline-inflected middle weight flavors that possess both good balance and delineation on the lingering finish. This will be approachable young if desired. Drink 2019+.
WA 87-89 (12/2013): The 2012 Gevrey-Chambertin Village is a blend of seven parcels and from this year, two less than previous years since they have now been rented to other producers, reducing the village cru from 2.4ha to 1.8ha. It has a fresh bouquet with lifted raspberry and fresh strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet red cherry, quite candied fruit and a long licorice-tinged finish. Fine. |

| BH 92 (3/2019): Fresh and still youthful aromas are composed by notes of cool essence of red berries, earth, spice and a whiff of wood character. The round, supple and relatively forward middle weight flavors evidence plenty of minerality on the focused and sneaky long finish that tightens up noticeably as it sits on the palate. This well-made and utterly delicious effort isn't seductive but I like the delivery and balance and while it could certainly be enjoyed now, I would continue to hold it for up to another decade. Try from 2025+. |

| BH 96 (1/2018): There is just enough wood present to mention but not so much as to materially detract from the attractively fresh, cool, pretty and airy red berry, earth, humus, anise and rose petal-scented aromas. The refined yet quite powerful middle weight are almost painfully intense and there is so much minerality the mouthfeel is akin to rolling small stones around in your mouth particularly so on the sappy, palate coating and hugely long finish. This too is seriously impressive and very classy. (Drink starting 2032). |

BH 93 (11/2005): The phenomenal aromatic complexity displayed by this wine from cask is still present with relatively tight but not hard frank, direct and robust flavors that have plenty of buffering fat and superb length. As I noted in my original tasting note, this will not compete for the longest lived Rousseau Chambertin yet it is packed, powerful and beautifully complex and is an Outstanding wine in any context but particularly so for the vintage. Because there is so much fat, this can be enjoyed now but will clearly offer more fireworks in the future so I would be inclined to let this baby rest for at least another 5 years and longer if you can keep your hands off of it. Drink: Try from 2012+
VM 92+ (4/2003): Good medium red. Cooler, more aristocratic nose than the Clos de Beze: blackberry, violet, minerals. Supple and suave but quite pure and sharply focused, with a degree of precision rare for the vintage. Finishes with terrific grip. Like the Clos Saint-Jacques and Clos de Beze, this may well ultimately merit a higher score. |

There is superbly good detail and focused power to the large-scaled flavors that also possess an Outstanding concentration of structure buffering dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the intensely mineral-driven and explosively long finish. This is a youthfully austere example of the genre that is presently quite compact and linear and thus will require at least a decade to flesh out and unwind but if you have the patience to wait it should be a great Chambertin in 20+ years.

Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint, leather and cedar meld into a huge core of fruit in a dramatic, powerful Chambertin that will require considerable bottle age to show the full breadth of its potential.

Hugely concentrated and sweet, but in a distinctly cooler and less expressive style than the Clos de Bèze. Sappy, saline wine with an incredible whiplash of a finish that leaves the palate saturated. Showing more red fruits than black in the early going, this is still an infant.
WA 96-98 (12/2013): The 2012 Chambertin Grand Cru has an ethereal bouquet with pure raspberry, wild strawberry, orange blossom, hints of iodine and a subtle marine influence. The oak is more integrated at this stage than the Clos de Beze: a multi-dimensional bouquet whose secrets will only be revealed with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with supremely fine tannins. There is a brooding intensity here – a sense of completeness and harmony that is entrancing. It is not a powerful Chambertin nor even a multidimensional one - at the moment. But it is an effortless Chambertin that will age 20-30 years with little problem, bewitching everywhere it goes. |

| BH 97 (1/2017): There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer. This is a big but not massive vintage for the Rousseau Cham and I like the sense of proportion and particularly so on the harmonious, superbly long and seamlessly well-balanced finale. As is the case with the 2015 vintage, it's going to be very interesting to see which of these two is the better wine in 15 to 20 years. Drink 2032+. |

BH 98 (1/2018): (100% new wood.) Here too there is just enough oak to mention but once again it's not really enough to impair the purity of the distinctly cool and ultra-spicy red currant, underbrush, sandalwood, lilac and plenty of earth aromas. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a similar level of minerality that is borderline pungent and it informs the explosively long, firm and very serious finish. This notably powerful, but not really austere effort, displays magnificent potential and if it develops its usual degree of complexity over time it should merit the upper end of my projected range. But as structured and firm as it is, I suspect that this will drink well after only 6 to 8 years of age thanks to the incredible abundance of dry extract. Drink 2037+.
VM 97-99 (1/2017): (12.8% natural alcohol chaptalized to 13.2%; Rousseau presented this wine before his Clos de Bèze because he finds the latter wine much more oaky in the early going): Dark, bright red with ruby highlights. Crushed black cherry, raspberry and spice aromas are lifted by a pungent floral topnote--"very ripe for this wine," notes Rousseau. At once utterly young and almost exotic, conveying extraordinary intensity and layered texture to its slightly high-toned flavors of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, licorice and spices. An element of menthol reserve contributes to the wine's impression of brooding energy. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and slowly mounting, explosive palate-staining length. Almost painful and almost perfect. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 97-99 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru took a while to open in the glass, as it is prone towards. It has a very elegant bouquet once again, the fruit an equal mixture of red and black, a touch of cold flint in the background accompanied by blood orange and satsuma that emerge with time. The palate is blessed with beguiling symmetry and power, counterpoised by the killer line of acidity, leading to a mineral-rich finish that goes on forever. This is another Outstanding Chambertin from Rousseau that wine lovers will doubtlessly be fighting over for years to come. And you know what? I wouldn't blame them. |

BH 99 (1/2022): A distinctly cool and exuberantly fresh nose features reticent wonderfully spiced notes of various dark berries along with forest floor nuances that include humus and earth. The intensity of the imposingly broad-shouldered and muscular flavors is borderline painful with impressive power on the hugely long finish that is supported by incredibly dense but quite fine-grained tannins. This is magnificent and a wine of class and grace that will justly vie for wine of the vintage honors when it's time for such assessments. It's extremely rare that I put 30-year initial drinking windows for modern red Burgundies, but my prediction is that this stunningly brilliant wine will age glacially. Drink 2050+.
JM 96-100 (11/2021): An imperial robe as we have come to expect. The bouquet is very backward, no problem there either, all about the fruit, the new wood is irrelevant. Starts slowly then builds immaculately, still too early really to see the detail. As always it is about grace style intensity and length rather than overt muscle, all the finesse one can want. Long and lovely. |

BH 94 (1/2015): This is beautifully elegant with its airy and cool yet markedly ripe nose of lavender, black raspberry, truffle and spiced plum scents. The sleek, well-delineated, intense and mineral-driven medium weight plus flavors possess fine mid-palate concentration before terminating in an attractively vibrant, harmonious and strikingly persistent finale. Lovely stuff that should age brilliantly well. Drink 2024+.
WA 94-96 (12/2013): The 2012 Ruchottes-Chambertin Clos des Ruchottes Grand Cru comes from the domain’s monopole: populated by one-third vines aged around 30-years and the remainder around 65-years old (see December issue for more details.) This year it sees 20% new oak. It has wonderful delineation on the nose with heightened mineralite from the limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a precise opening. There is a wave of pure, clinically defined fresh raspberry and wild strawberry notes that dovetails into quite a stern, very linear finish. This is uncompromising at the moment, an aloof yet compelling Ruchottes-Chambertin that does not quite possess the completeness of say, Mugneret-Gibourg’s, but clearly as the substance to age extremely well.
VM 93 (3/2015): Bright medium red. Superripe aromas of black and purple fruits, violet and licorice, complicated by leather and game nuances. Highly concentrated, very ripe and palate-staining, with the black fruit and menthol flavors lifted by a note of violet. Finishes with a suggestion of chocolatey ripeness and Outstanding breadth. Perhaps not as classy as its 2013 sibling but surprisingly easy to taste today. |

VM 92+ (3/2016): Bright medium red. Alluring superripe aromas of black cherry, mint and bitter chocolate: I would have guessed that this wine was vinified with some whole clusters but in fact it was entirely destemmed. A rather powerful Volnay with a slightly high-toned, almost porty ripeness to its black cherry, dark berry and chocolate flavors, but strong, slightly peppery acidity gives it a penetrating, somewhat disjointed quality in the early going. This deep, chewy Volnay finishes with big, granular tannins and excellent persistence. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a feisty, much more gourmand bouquet compared to its siblings at this early stage with almost meaty red berry fruit infused with limestone/flinty scents. The palate is very focused with an abiding sense of symmetry, long in the mouth with fine tannins (although not as filigree as the Taillepieds) but with the same silky and harmonious texture toward the long finish. Excellent.
BH 90-93 (4/2015): (from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Reduction. Here there is more size, weight and power to the detailed and more subtly mineral-driven flavors that also possess a lovely texture on the dusty, palate coating and linear finish. This is impressively long and well-balanced though at present not quite as complex. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

VM 94 (3/2016): Healthy dark red. Highly complex but youthfully restrained nose offers scents of black fruits, violet, chocolate, menthol and minerals, along with some faintly liqueur-like high tones. Boasts Outstanding density of texture, not to mention great lift and power for this bottling, with almost exotic fruit ripeness leavened by strong acidity. Finishes with spectacular lingering perfume of violet, bitter chocolate, wild herbs and mint. An amazingly strong, bulletproof Volnay for the year--or for any vintage, for that matter. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs has that citrus-like freshness; that Seville orange marmalade trait that was tangible in a range of mature Clos des Ducs tasted the previous week. There are touches of violet that emerge with continued aeration. The palate is very feminine and refined, laid back almost, but that distracts from the structure underneath and the persistence and minerality on the finish. This is a regal, perhaps one should say, "ducal," Clos des Ducs that should drink beautifully over the next 25-30 years. But as I discovered at the vertical, this vineyard needs several years in the cellar.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): (a monopole that measures 2.15 ha.) A gorgeously fresh melange of black raspberry, cherry, tea, violets and anise scents introduces superbly well-detailed middle weight flavors that seem to be built on a base of firm minerality that continues onto the dusty, complex and strikingly persistent finish. As is often the case, this is the most complete wine in the range. Drink 2023+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (4/2015): (from both Charmes and Mazoyères.) This is also notably floral with its cool mix of red and dark currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of earth, game and wood nuances. There is fine power, punch and detail to the muscular medium weight flavors that possess an unusually refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a dusty, complex and impressively persistent finish. Good as this is, the Champeaux is just as interesting though in fairness I should note that it doesn't have quite the same size and weight as does the Charmes. Drink 2025+.
VM 90-93+ (4/2015): The 2013 Charmes-Chambertin stands out for its intense minerality and energy. Crushed rocks, sage, chalk, spice and dark red stone fruits open up in a deep, powerful Burgundy endowed with notable class. It's pretty clear the 2013 is showing just a bare hint of its potential today. Still, from time to time, the wine's pedigree comes through loud and clear. Bernstein's Charmes is a blend of 60% true Charmes and 40% Mazoyères.
VM 90-93 (1/2015): (a 50/50 blend of true Charmes and Mazoyères): Bright, deep red. Distinctly blacker on the nose than the Cazetiers, offering scents of blackberry, violet, chocolate and espresso. Dense, silky and sweet, with lovely energy and underlying minerality to its juicy dark berry flavors. The dusty tannins saturate the plate without introducing any impression of dryness. For a grand cru, this should give pleasure relatively early. |

VM 91-93 (1/2015): (a combination of Haut and Bas, the top of the cru providing fresher fruit and the bottom riper, according to Guillaume Boillot; aged in 50% new oak): Good bright red. ure but reticent aromas of redcurrant, rust and minerals; conveys a distinct iron character. Then creamy and seamless in the mid-palate but with a decidedly elegant delicacy. Finishes savory and long, with a serious spine of peppery tannins calling for patience.
WA 89-91 (12/2014): The 2013 Pommard 1er Cru les Rugiens, which comes from two parcels located in Rugiens Haut and Rugiens Bas, has a perfumed, quite floral bouquet that is harmonious and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, good acidity here, with a fresh and almost citric finish. Nicely structured with fine tannins, this carries the 50% new oak well and should give 10-15 years of pleasure. |

WA 92 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was showing some rather conspicuous new oak on the nose, though there is sufficient fruit underneath to soak that up. It just needs to develop more presence. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red berry fruit, fine tannin, a pinch of black pepper on the tip of the tongue with good heft behind it. What it lacks is killer precision on the finish, all the same, I admire the boldness of this Bonnes-Mares and that is often what I seek from this vineyard. Tasted September 2016.
VM 94 (3/2016): Moderately saturated medium red. Highly nuanced scents of red cherry, raspberry, flowers and underbrush. At once silky and penetrating, showing a positive medicinal aspect to its flavors of red berries, flowers and spicy herbs. Very shapely wine with a rising finish featuring suave tannins and noteworthy finesse. A superb showing; this strikes me as more refined than the larger-scaled 2014. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 94 (1/2016): An all but invisible veneer of wood integrates seamlessly with the intensely earthy and wonderfully complex dark berry fruit aromas that display top notes of spice and dried flowers along with a hint of herbal tea. As one might reasonably expect there is excellent power, volume and muscle to the attractive mineral-driven broad-shouldered flavors that possess a notably different texture compared to the Clos de Bèze on the hugely long finish. Unlike the Clos de Bèze however this beauty will probably be approachable after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring. |

BH 88 (1/2016): (from the villages portion of La Bossière; 60% new oak.) An appealingly fresh and deeply pitched nose possesses undertones of earth and sauvage notes to the mix of red and dark currant scents. There is reasonably good richness but also good delineation to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that display only a trace of rusticity on the frank, firm and intense finish. Drink 2020+.
VM 88 (3/2016): Dark bright red. Cool aromas of black cherry, menthol and mint. Juicy and on the lean side, with tightly wound dark berry flavors accented by pepper and spices. Shows good intensity but the tannins are a touch dry. Will this put on weight with time in bottle?
WA 87-89 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin Village has a clean and pure, rather “airy” bouquet, with fresh strawberry, citrus fruit and a slight stoniness. The palate is fresh and vibrant with tart red fruit, a citric line of acidity that is just slightly compromised by the dominant new wood at the moment. This is the one cru that I would have been more prudent about the use of oak, although it should meld together with time. |

BH 89-92 (1/2015): A fresh but restrained nose is completely different as it's less spicy and more floral with lovely and airy notes of both red and dark currant scents. There is good delineation to the vibrant middle weight flavors that exude a fine minerality on the firm, balanced and lingering finish. This does not yet possess superior complexity but my predicted range assumes that it will develop based on the quality of the underlying material. Drink 2021+.
WA 88-90 (12/2014): The 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Aux Echanges is a cru close to Jean-Marie's heart as he told me that his mother used to play there when she was a child. This barrel sample, which was 70% through malolactic fermentation, has a floral bouquet with plenty of ripe mulberry fruit. The palate is succulent on the entry, sappy in the mouth with clean lines and a gentle grip on the finish. Fine. |

BH 91-93 (1/2015): (from Champs Traversin.) This too is exceptionally spicy with a slightly riper nose that is comprised by cassis, plum and black raspberry scents. There is excellent richness to the full-bodied and vibrant medium weight plus flavors that possess a suave and wonderfully seductive mouth feel, all wrapped in an ever-so-mildly austere and impressively persistent finale. This is good stuff that should be approachable after only 5 to 7 years. Drink 2025+.
WA 90-92 (12/2014): The 2013 Echezeaux Grand Cru (which comes from the lieu-dit of "En Orveaux") has a slight reduction on the nose, but beneath lies fine redcurrant and iodine scents that should be quite intense once in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, fleshy tannins, crisp acidity and good density on the finish. This is a very fine Echezeaux in the making, though I suspect that the 2012 will be the one to seek out. |

BH 92-94 (1/2015): ( from a 1.1 ha parcel of 55+ year old vines.) A ripe and extremely fresh nose exhibits perfumed aromas of cassis, earth, spice, plum liqueur and the classic Nuits animale character along with a background touch of wood. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the velvet-textured broad-shouldered yet refined flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality onto the balanced, suave and mouth coating finale. This is a bit less structured than it usually is and certainly less so than the Vaucrains if only just. Drink 2025+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 92-94 (1/2015): Bright red. Ripe, musky aromas of red berries, minerals and rust. Suave and creamy-sweet in the mouth, with an almost jammy ripeness but also very good framing acidity to the crunchy red berry flavors. Perhaps a bit youthfully disassociated at present, not to mention firmly tannic on the back end, yet this is easier to taste today than the Vaucrains owing to its sheer sex appeal. Offers superb potential.
WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Saint Georges, the “Grand Cru in waiting," is bestowed a pastille-like purity on the nose that takes time to get motoring, with a cheeky touch of marmalade developing. The palate is medium-bodied, has real class, bridled with with superb tension and fine tannins, even if it does not quite possess the riveting persistency on the finish that would complete the package. Still, this is a very fine Les Saint Georges that may merit a higher appraisal post-bottling. |

There is excellent volume to the intense and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that culminate in an explosively long, mouth coating and moderately austere finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. Grivot is one of few domaines where their Ech is easily a match for their Clos de Vougeot in terms of size, weight and power and overall this is potentially terrific.

VM 95+ (4/2016): Bright dark red. Precise, high-pitched aromas of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and mint. Utterly spherical, fine-grained wine with outstanding intensity; conveys a powerful impression of force but without any hardness or brutality. The pungent red berry flavors are complicated by suggestions of leather and game and given further punch by strong underlying minerality. Finishes with big, broad, building tannins that will require patience. Boasts outstanding inner-mouth tension and energy, but the sensuality of Vosne-Romanée is also on display here. A great showing. BH 95 (1/2016): This undoubtedly possesses the most floral nose of these 2013 grands crus with its notes of lilac, violet and rose petal along with a broad range of spice elements adding nuance to the dark berry fruit liqueur aromas. There is superb volume and intensity to the pungent mineral-driven and imposingly-scaled flavors that exude focused power on the extract-rich, explosively long and beautifully well-detailed finale. As good as the Echézeaux is, and it is indeed superb, the Riche is flat out great. As I have consistently underscored with the Grivot '13s though do not buy this wine in the hopes of instant, or even early, gratification as the Riche is going to require a very long snooze in a cool cellar. |

VM 92+ (3/2016): (50% new oak, 50% vendange entier): Bright, dark red. Captivating perfume of black raspberry, rose petal and orange zest, plus a wild leathery quality. Quite plush and thick, conveying a noble rusticity to the blackberry and violet flavors. At once powerful and suave, with a fine-grained texture given cut and shape by excellent acidity. Finishes brisk and long, with late hints of fresh blood and leather as well as a slight bitter edge that calls for patience.
WA 92 (12/2015): The 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has a well defined bouquet with detailed black cherry and blueberry aromas, quite harmonious with a touch of lemon rind in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, well judged acidity, and there is a little tightness perhaps here. There is a fine seem of acidity, though perhaps the elegance of the 2014 means that it does not quite reach the same heights. Nice saline finish though -- drink this over the next 10-15 years. |

| VM 94 (3/2016): Medium red with a palish rim. Complex, soil-inflected aromas of red berries, rose petal, coffee, meat and musky underbrush. In the mouth, fine-grained raspberry, game and savory soil flavors are invigorated by notes of flowers, pepper and spices. Structured but without any hardness, this surprisingly accessible wine finishes with suave, nearly invisible tannins and a strong repeating raspberry flavor. With time in the glass, exotic notes of yellow peach and passion fruit emerged. This fascinating Clos de la Roche is less backward than some examples of this grand cru in 2013. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very refined, you could almost say "mild-mannered" bouquet compared to the other Gevrey premier cru, with more mineral notes and more floral scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a sturdy and assertive entry: bold but ripe, supple tannin knitted with well-judged acidity that dovetail into a very focused finish. This is not as immediate as I believe the other Gevrey premier cru will be and will deserve several years in bottle.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Here there is a bit more wood with the associated traces of menthol that surround the elegant floral and like the Estournelles, airy essence of red berry fruit liqueur and spice suffused aromas. There is a sophisticated mouth feel to the appealingly textured, intense and focused middle weight flavors that also display plenty of minerality that serves to add lift to the structured, serious and strikingly long finish. This is indisputably terrific though interestingly it doesn't seem to have quite as much separation between it and the other Gevrey 1ers in the range as I typically find chez Jadot. Still, this should be a really lovely effort though note well that this is a CSJ for the patient. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
VM 90-93 (1/2015): (this fruit was harvested on October 10, following heavy rain on the 9th): Medium red. Lovely rose petal perfume dominates the nose. Juicy and pure but tight and youthfully unforgiving; showing less fat and volume than the Estournelles. Unless this is simply painfully backward, it's hard to imagine this wine ever delivering the satisfaction of the Estournelles. Stephen. Tanzer. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has quite a deep and introspective bouquet with broody dark berry fruit, wild hedgerow and forest floor aromas that draw you in. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and well judged acidity. This is linear at the moment, very nicely focused with a dash of white pepper on the finish livening things up. Very fine...but patience required.
BH 91-94 (4/2015): Like the Charmes and the Griotte, Barnier said that this was not vinified by Jadot. There is a pretty and expressive nose of red currant, raspberry, wild cherry and soft sauvage hints where the latter continues onto the dense, serious and powerful big-bodied flavors that are also shaped by a very firm and slightly rustic finish that delivers excellent if not truly sensation persistence. I slightly prefer the Chapelle for its greater refinement but it's close qualitatively speaking. Note that this too will require plenty of patience.

Sweet on entry, then rather backward on the palate; has no shortage of salty stuffing but an impression of lowish acidity gives the brooding palate a slightly heavy quality. WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets is much more introspective and closed on the nose compared to the other Volnays: this bouquet tells you not to be so foolish as to nose it so prematurely. However, it does begin to open with intriguing dried blood/ferrous scents infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, “thicker” tannins than expected that lend this Caillerets the density more than the tension at the moment. This deserves 5 or 6 years at least in bottle.
VM 91-93 (1/2015): Healthy bright red. Riper aromas of black fruits, spices and menthol. The sweetest and roundest of these 2013s to this point, offering rich, suave flavors of red fruits, spices and red licorice. Serious but fine-grained tannins arrive late, allowing the fruit to saturate the palate. This should evolve gracefully.
BH 89-92 (4/2015): (from a parcel measuring 7ouvrees, or around .3 ha of 40+ year old vines.) An overtly spicy and somewhat more deeply pitched nose combines notes of red and dark berry fruit that display a top note of dried flowers. The dense and serious medium-bodied flavors possess a chalky mouth feel that exhibits ample minerality on the mildly austere and ever-so-slightly drying finish. In this case the supporting tannins seem ripe so there is a reasonable chance that the dryness will dissipate once the wine is bottled. Drink 2021+. |

The palate is medium-bodied with supple and very fine, almost filigree tannins. The acidity is beautifully judged here -- very focused and refined, seamless towards the sophisticated finish. This is one of the best vintages of La Grand Rue that I have tasted, which is a considerable achievement given that this was not an exemplary growing season. |

VM 94 (3/2016): Medium-deep red. Complex, high-pitched perfume melds blackberry, cherry, wild herbs, black pepper, underbrush and dried flowers. Classic Clos des Lambrays in its combination of red and black fruits, dried flowers, minerals, spices, licorice and earth and its pungent inner-mouth energy. This wine actually reminded me of a 1978! Finishes with firm, noble tannins and terrific piquant length. This is actually easier to taste today than the village wine but should evolve very slowly. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 93 (9/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is a divisive wine, not one for those seeking layer upon layer of fruit. It is more mature in appearance than its peers, perhaps missing the fruit intensity one would anticipate from a grand cru of this stature. There is something a little "dusty attic" here although that ebbs away with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly leafy entry, gentle and elegant, full of personality. It is missing the weight and volume that a more benevolent vintage would have lent and it does not quite possess the structure or substance to suggest long-term. Yet, it remains a well-crafted and to put it prosaically, is absolutely delicious.
BH 92-94 (1/2015): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age.) Here too there is gentle wood setting off a similar if more complex nose that displays more prominent floral and spice scents. There is very good volume to the utterly delicious medium weight and wonderfully vibrant flavors that possess really fine delineation before culminating in a mineral-inflected, saline and focused finish. I very much admire the sleek mouth feel as well as the impeccable balance. Lovely juice that is moderately structured and a bit less youthfully austere than usual. Drink 2025+. |

At once silky and juicy on the palate, with black raspberry and blackberry fruit flavors complicated by a saline quality. This densely packed wine shows little in the way of early sweetness and seemed to go into a shell in the glass, with its firm minerality gaining the upper hand. This will require patience. BH 86 (1/2016): An earthy and moderately somber nose features mostly notes of various red berries along with hints of underbrush and humus. There is good punch and detail to the lightly mineral-inflected flavors that exhibit a distinct edginess on the otherwise saline and lingering if slightly clipped finish. Most people will likely find the level of acidity too much for their liking as it imparts a distinct austerity and as such I would be disinclined to age this for very long. Drink 2018+. |

WA 91 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale has a more sophisticated and nuanced nose compared to its peers, red and black fruit here and well integrated oak. The palate is smooth in the mouth, supple and quite plush, clearly with some quality new oak that is almost Cathiard-like in style (something that appears to have evolved in the last few months). However, there is fruit to support that here. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and it should turn into a very decent Nuits Saint-Georges.
BH 89 (1/2016): This is admirably pure and relatively high-toned despite the presence of ample earth influence on the bright mix of red raspberry and cherry scents. There is good volume to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that display a sleek muscularity before terminating in a firm, mouth coating and well-balance if mildly austere finale. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2021+. |

BH 92-95 (1/2015): (from a .90 ha parcel.) This is notably more aromatically elegant with its pretty nose of extract of red cherry, raspberry, pomegranate and plum where added breadth is present in the form of spice, tea, earth and sandalwood hints. There is that lovely sense of underlying tension present on the medium weight plus flavors that display both stone and soil undertones that continue onto the balanced, classy and stylish finish. This is terrific though despite the refined mouth feel there is a very firm tannic spine that will require plenty of time to fully resolve. Patience required. Drink 2028+.
WA 91-93 (12/2014): The 2013 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru has a tightly wound bouquet with blackberry, touches of mulberry and briary. It is a relatively "conservative" Griotte compared to others tasted from barrel. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. A little fuller than the Charmes-Chambertin '13 with fine backbone, this feels chewier, but with plenty of substance on the finish. This is a gutsy Griotte, but it will mellow by the time it is bottled. |

VM 96+ (3/2016): Very dark bright red. Great purity and lift to the aromas of black cherry, violet, graphite, bitter chocolate and minerals. Showing less obvious density today than the Bonnes-Mares but this is extremely tight and unevolved, with its saline crushed stone and mineral elements currently dominating its underlying fruit. The yield was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, due in large part to millerandage, but this extremely imploded Musigny is showing little of the early sweetness one might expect from tiny berries. Finishes with outstanding flavor authority, length and grip. This wine should go on for decades. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 96 (1/2016): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) This is also quite aromatically restrained with its cool, airy and extraordinarily complex nose that features notes of red raspberry, black cherry, violet, rose petal, Asian-style spices, in particular cinnamon and anise plus a hint of orange pekoe tea. There is superb concentration to the intensely stony and well-delineated broad-shouldered flavors that also brim with palate soaking dry extract that helps to buffer that imposingly powerful, tautly muscular and massively long and youthfully austere finish. This is breathtaking in just how much power and intensity it packs yet there isn't a hair out of place. In a word, 'wow'! Drink 2033+. |

Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
