Tasting Notes:
BH 90 (4/2017): (from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans.)This is also beautifully well-layered with its broad-ranging nose of red currant, pomegranate, earth, floral and spice-suffused aromas. As is usually the case this is both bigger and more powerful if not quite as elegant with a similar level of mid-palate concentration where the copious dry extract does a reasonably good if not perfect job of buffering the firm tannic spine on the impressively long if slightly edgy finish. This has many positive attributes but the balance isn't quite perfect. Drink 2022+.

There is excellent vibrancy to the more concentrated and muscular larger-scaled flavors that still manage to remain relatively refined thanks to the dense but fine tannins shaping the strikingly long, balanced, compact and quite serious finale. This beauty of a Grèves is potentially outstanding and should age accordingly. |

WA 92-94 (12/2014): The 2013 Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets is much more introspective and closed on the nose compared to the other Volnays: this bouquet tells you not to be so foolish as to nose it so prematurely. However, it does begin to open with intriguing dried blood/ferrous scents infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, “thicker” tannins than expected that lend this Caillerets the density more than the tension at the moment. This deserves 5 or 6 years at least in bottle.
VM 91-93 (1/2015): Healthy bright red. Riper aromas of black fruits, spices and menthol. The sweetest and roundest of these 2013s to this point, offering rich, suave flavors of red fruits, spices and red licorice. Serious but fine-grained tannins arrive late, allowing the fruit to saturate the palate. This should evolve gracefully.
BH 89-92 (4/2015): (from a parcel measuring 7ouvrees, or around .3 ha of 40+ year old vines.) An overtly spicy and somewhat more deeply pitched nose combines notes of red and dark berry fruit that display a top note of dried flowers. The dense and serious medium-bodied flavors possess a chalky mouth feel that exhibits ample minerality on the mildly austere and ever-so-slightly drying finish. In this case the supporting tannins seem ripe so there is a reasonable chance that the dryness will dissipate once the wine is bottled. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 91 (2/2010): Earthy and now mature and nicely complex aromas lead to rich, full and delicious middle weight flavors of solid if not truly exceptional depth that are underpinned by now almost completely resolved tannins and fine intensity on the impressively long finish. This is a lovely effort that avoids the excesses of the vintage, particularly the over ripeness that plagues many less successful '97s. While this could be held, it is drinking well now and I would suggest drinking it over the next 5 to 10 years. Except for one very lackluster bottle, I have had consistent notes. |

| VM 93 (3/2006): Good deep red-ruby color. Black fruits, violet and pepper on the nose, with a suggestion of oak spice. Large-scaled, lush and vinous, with full but juicy flavors of dark berries and violet. This, too, boasts lovely restrained sweetness. A wine of huge phenolic material, with the dusty tannins coating the entire palate. Here's a 2003 that calls for a good decade of aging and may well evolve in bottle for 20 years or more. VM 95+ (4/2008): Full ruby-red. Pure, complex but restrained nose offers blackberry, black cherry, licorice, spices and black pepper. Wonderfully intense and vibrant, with a compellingly chewy texture and great thrust to the highly concentrated dark fruit and bitter chocolate flavors. The fine-grained tannins spread out to saturate the palate of this powerfully structured Volnay, with the wine's perfume lingering in the mouth for minutes. I asked Frederic when the estate last made a Clos des Chenes as good as this, and he replied that it's the best since the '61. Extended bottle aging may well bring an even higher rating. Volnay doesn't get much better than this.
BH 94 (4/2008): (from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans) A beautifully elegant and highly complex nose of extract of dark berry fruit that is both elegant and complex serves as a dramatic introduction to the big-bodied, indeed even robust flavors that are firm, dense and incredibly concentrated, all wrapped in a palate drenching finish that just oozes dry extract and gives a velvety texture to the unbelievably long finale. This is a wonderfully gifted wine that has everything it needs to age gracefully for multiple decades and it will need 12 to 15 years in a cool cellar to really hit its stride. This too is one of those 'wow' wines. Drink 2017+. Outstanding!
WA 93-94 (6/2007): Aromas of smoked meat, freshly-grated ginger, and intensely concentrated cherry and red currant offer a call to the forceful attack mounted on the palate by the Lafarges’ 2005 Volnay Clos des Chenes, incisively reaching every corner. But for all of its brightness as well as obvious tannic structure, this is imposingly creamy in texture, and low tones of dark chocolate, meats (running the gamut from ham hocks to bloody beef), chalk and wet stone emerge - along with subtle and complex spiciness - in an evocative finish. As usual, this will offer a fascinating decade or more of comparison with the Clos du Chateau des Ducs. (The 2004, incidentally, displays cut, clarity, and more concentration than its vintage stable mates - because, says Lafarge, the fruit from this site permitted greater fermentative extraction than that from his other hailed-on Volnay vineyards.) |

BH 95 (4/2012): The wondrous complexity of the aromas is genuinely remarkable with its ultra-fresh, ripe and airy red berry fruit, stone, earth and spice scents. Moreover, this impressive depth continues onto the rich, full-bodied and very serious big-bodied flavors that ooze dry extract on the concentrated, intense and vibrant finish that seems to go on and on. I very much like the balance and while this is certainly extremely rich and ripe, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness or undue weightiness. This explosive effort should be magnificent in time. Outstanding! Drink: 2024+
WA 95 (4/2012): The 2009 Volnay Clos de Chene is a model of elegance. Weightless, pure and elegant, it succeeds in conveying notable flavor intensity with no sense of heaviness, something only Pinot Noir is capable of doing to this degree. The fresh, vibrant finish suggests the wine has many days of fine drinking ahead. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029.
VM 91+ (4/2012): Good full red. Reticent nose hints at medicinal black cherry, blackberry and licorice; smells much tougher than the Clos des Ducs. Densely packed but quite tight (is this already shutting down?), with the medicinal character carrying through onto the palate. Compared to the Clos des Ducs, this wine shows a darker fruit character and no easy sweetness today. The tannins arrive late, then build. Lafarge continues to compare the 2009s to past years like 1985, 1966 and 1964. He noted that the '09s "gained in harmony and complexity during their last months of elevage." |

| VM 94-96 (1/2014): Dark shades of blue/blackish fruit grace the palate in Lafarge's 2012 Volnay Clos des Chenes. This is an unusually supple, resonant young Clos des Chenes. Whereas the Caillerets possesses energy from its tannin and minerality, the Clos des Chenes is round and virtually seamless in texture, with all of the structural elements seemingly folded into the fruit. The 2012 is perhaps a bit atypical in its richness, but it is a real stunner just the same. Antonio Galloni. |

A mix of ultra pure red pinot fruit and slightly darker fruits that include notes of plum, dark raspberry and currant merges into rich, cool and dusty mouth coating flavors that possess lovely depth and near perfect balance on the persistent and beautifully detailed finish where a subtle mineral streak surfaces. Lovely juice that is perhaps a bit more powerful than usual. Drink 2014+. Outstanding!
VM 92+ (4/2009): Good medium red. Captivating aromas of cherry, spices, minerals and flowers. Fat, broad and deeply spicy, with noteworthy depth of flavor and a tactile mouth feel. At once mouthfilling and vibrant; seamless and lively. The very long finish features thoroughly enrobed ripe tannins and vibrant spicy persistence. It will be fascinating to compare this with the 2007 version in six or seven years.
WA 91+ (12/2009): The Lafarge monopole 2006 Volnay Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs leads with ripe yet tart-edged cherry and red currant; takes on a bitter-sweet cast as licorice and cherry pit intervene on the palate; and retains a refreshing cast even as it caresses with silken texture. Mineral, tea-like, and gamey shadings are lingering in the shadows rather than engaging in intercourse with the fruit, but I'm left wondering whether the relative absence of dynamic here is a a function of the wine's temporary state or of an inherently relatively reticent personality. Certainly one will be able to derive at least a decade of satisfaction from this and - based its track record - longer for those fascinated by wine's life beyond middle-age. |

Overt suggestions of chalk and cherry pit lend the buoyant finish a measure of austerity, but it is so saliva-inducing and refreshing that severity is not a risk. It should last for at least 15 years.

BH 94 (4/2012): This is aromatically a bit less elegant than the Mitans but it is more complex with cool red and blue pinot fruit, violet, earth and stone nuances introducing attractively rich and equally pure middle weight flavors that exhibit real verve on the mouth coating and exceptionally persistent finish. As usual, this is a classic Volnay that is built to age and will need every bit of 12 to 15 years to be at its best. In short, this is a knockout. Outstanding! Drink: 2021+.
WA 93-95 (5/2011): The estate’s 2009 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs saturates the palate with its deep, persistent fruit. The aromas and flavors build in the glass towards the rich, multi-dimensional finish. This shows marvelous staying power and fabulous overall balance. The Clos du Chateau des Ducs is more overtly fruit-driven and structured but perhaps a touch less aromatically expressive than the Mitans. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.
VM 92 (4/2012): Rather pale red. Highly aromatic, expressive scents of redcurrant, cherry, spices and flowers. Wonderfully suave and fine-grained, in the typically feminine style of this wine--and classic Volnay. Lovely pliant red fruit and licorice flavors saturate the mouth, with a saline element adding interest on the long finish. Shows an attractive light touch and supple tannins. This will go truffley with bottle aging. |

VM 93-95 (1/2014): The 2012 Volnay Clos du Chateau des Ducs impresses for its pure texture. Silky, generous and enveloping, the 2012 flows with the essence of black cherries, plums, savory herbs and wild flowers, all finely-knit and impeccably balanced. WA 90-92 (12/2013): The 2012 Volnay 1er Cru Clos du Chateau des Ducs is the 0.57-hectare monopole of Lafarge from an average of 80-year-old vines. Despite coaxing it remains stubbornly reticent on the nose, coquettishly revealing sea cave scents, perhaps a suggestion of what is to come with bottle age. The palate is more expressive with silky tannins, very pure red berry fruit, fine mineralite and a sophisticated, focused finish that lingers in the mouth. This has a wonderful weightless quality to it. Very classy.
BH 88-91 (4/2014): (from 50+ year old vines; a monopole of the domaine.) This was quite firmly reduced but even so the underlying fruit does seem ripe. In the same fashion as the Mitans there is that beguiling sense of underlying tension to the beautifully well-delineated medium-bodied flavors that possess a refined mouth feel, all wrapped in a finish that is once again notably dry. Note that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2019+. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. JD 98 (11/2021): The 2018 Volnay 1er Clos Du Chateau Des Ducs is more expressive and showy right out of the gate and has a complex, sexy, incredibly impressive style that's a joy to drink. Ripe cherries, mulberries, rose petals, Asian spices, dried herbs, and incense all emerge from this beauty, and it's as seamless and layered as they come, with ripe, velvety tannins, no hard edges, medium to full body, and flawless balance. It's already drinking nicely yet will cruise for 20+ years in cold cellars.
VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Volnay Clos du Château des Ducs 1er Cru has a little more transparency and elegance on the nose compared to its peers, brambly red fruit with a touch of sous-bois and tobacco leaf. The palate is well-defined with fine tannins. A crisp line of acidity imparts tension with more sapidity than its peers. Harmonious, fine weight in the mouth with a Pommard-like grip on the finish, this is a finely crafted, commendable Volnay, one that defies the negative tropes of the vintage. WA 90 (5/2011): Lafarge’s 2008 Volnay Vendanges Selectionnees is sweet, rich and beautifully layered. It shows superb depth as it sweeps across the palate with generous, expressive fruit. An uneven flowering in 2008 resulted in abnormally low yields. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.
VM 87+ (4/2011): Good full red. High-toned, slightly piney aromas of cherry, spices and mint. Juicy, dry and penetrating, with the minty quality carrying through onto the palate. Finishes firmly tannic, with a saline nuance and slightly spiky acidity. I wanted a bit more verve.
BH 87-89 (4/2010): A much more restrained but more complex nose of dense red berry fruit trimmed in earth and wet stone nuances, both of which can also be found on the more concentrated, naturally sweet and delicious medium-bodied flavors that display firm but not aggressive tannins and good length. There is a hint of dryness here as well though again, it's probably an effect of the considerable CO2 present. Drink 2015+. |

Very sweet and broad on entry, then suave and nicely delineated in the mid-palate, displaying complex saline soil tones and cherry and dark berry fruit flavors. This savory Volnay finishes with building toothcoating tannins and terrific chocolatey length. Needs time, but this wine strikes me as more harmonious than the excellent 2013 version was at the same stage.
WA 91-93 (12/2015): The 2014 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a more pointed and angular nose at the moment when compared with the Taillepieds. It is probably the most primal of the Volnay, black cherry and cassis fruit suffused with tangible mineralite, but it needs to be knitted together during the remainder of its elevage. The palate is very well balanced, the wood component again needing time to enmesh, but there is good substance here -- even if I prefer the elegance of the Caillerets on the finish (at the moment).
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( from a huge 3.98 ha parcel.) Once again there is a deft touch of wood apparent on the restrained, cool and pretty array of red berry, earth and softly spice-inflected nose. The wonderfully refined, layered and sleek middle weight flavors possess a polished mouth feel while delivering Outstanding length on the moderately austere and dusty finale. Like the Taillepieds this is quite firm and will need at least 6 to 8 years of cellaring before it will be approachable. Patience required. Drink 2026+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

I very much like the balance and overall depth and this is a wine that should be approachable young yet reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring. Drink 2026+.
VM 90-92 (1/2016): (the Arlauds have gotten this fruit from 60-year-old vines through a fermage arrangement since 2004): Good bright red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, spices and violet. Juicy, fruity, spicy and fresh; very ripe but not a fleshy style. Finishes with noteworthy verve and punch, and the spine to reward aging. This dark clay and calcaire soil would probably be great for Chardonnay, noted Cyprien Arlaud. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 90-92 (12/2015): The 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Blanchards demonstrated more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the 2014 Millandes out of barrel: wild strawberry, raspberry and a touch of cassis. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry with sappy ripe black fruit, more citric than the Millandes with a sense of nascent energy coming through on the finish. This is very fine Les Blanchards and it should age with style. |

This is markedly reduced at present so I would strongly suggest decanting it if you are tempted to open a bottle young. Otherwise the supple, round and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a sleek muscularity and solid intensity, all wrapped in a lingering finish that presently displays a hint of an edge that may or may not ever round off. As such my rating is a compromise as I suspect that this will develop even better complexity with age and thus even if the balance isn't perfect, the '14 Clos des Epeneaux should still make for a lovely wine. There is impressive volume to the well-muscled and broad-shouldered flavors that possess plenty of underlying tension, all wrapped in a complex, rustic and lingering finish that is less austere than usual. VM 90-93 (1/2016): (aged in 75% new oak, but Boillot used 350-liter barrels to get more freshness): Healthy dark red. Reticent aromas of black cherry, chocolate, menthol and herbs are less fruity today than the Volnays here. Large-scaled, round and sweet, showing more complex, soil-driven salinity than easy fruit in the early going. Powerful material here. Finishes saline, ripely tannic and long. This wine may need a solid eight years in the cellar to approach maturity. |

BH 91 (4/2016): A deft touch of wood sets off the ripe, pure and elegant aromas of spice and floral-inflected dark pinot fruit and plum scents. There is excellent delineation and energy to the tension-filled, rich and complex medium-bodied flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel yet the finish is borderline robust. In sum this is a Santenots of contrasts but I like the interplay of different elements. Drink 2021+.
VM 89-92 (1/2016): Bright, dark red. Subtly complex dark red fruits, flowers and chocolate on the nose. Plush and silky on the palate, possessing good buffering material to support the fairly strong tannins. This seamless, vinous wine shows no easy sweetness but boasts excellent sappy vinosity. Incidentally, the Boillots recently sold their vines in Savigny-lès-Beaune and Beaune in order to buy some Puligny-Montrachet. |

VM 92-94 (1/2016): Bright medium ruby Savory aromas of blackberry, bitter chocolate, liquid smoke and animal fur. At once silky and bracing, displaying excellent definition and lift to its flavors of blueberry, blackberry and licorice. Finishes juicy and long, with serious but fine-grained tannins and lively blackberry and violet notes. This really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate and glistens on the aftertaste. WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Vosne-Romanee 1Er Cru Malconsorts is more opulent and generous on the nose compared to the Beaumonts with blueberry and black cherry fruit, more red plum and strawberry notes evolving with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and subtle sous-bois character on the finish. There is a little new wood to be subsumed on the finish, but it has great potential and represents one of the best Malconsorts you will find this year.
VM 92-94 (1/2016): Deep, bright red. Soil-driven aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blood orange and iodiney minerality, with a complementary element of sexy oak. Juicy and intense but still youthfully imploded; totally different in grain and texture from the more pliant Beaux Monts. Finishes with terrific sappy energy and serious tannic spine. This will need a minimum of seven or eight years of cellaring.
BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) The intensely floral-suffused nose is not quite as spicy as that of the Beaux Monts but it is arguably even more complex with its layered aromas of red and dark currant, sandalwood and lilac nuances. There is Outstanding power and punch to the beautifully delineated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a beguiling texture on the complex, balanced and driving mineral-inflected finale. This is terrific but plenty of patience will be required as I suspect that this will close down once it's bottled. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |

| JD 93 (8/2021): I loved the 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Champeaux, which has the more up-front, soft, charming style of the vintage front and center. Lots of pretty red fruits, flowers, spice, and subtle earthy nuances give way to a more medium-bodied Gevrey with polished tannins, solid mid-palate density and concentration, and a great finish. It's one of those wines that builds nicely over the evening and grows on you with time in the glass. It's drinking brilliantly today yet should have another decade of prime time. There is fine richness to the succulent and fleshy medium weight flavors that possess a relatively refined mouth feel thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the sappy and well-balanced finale. WA 92-94 (12/2015): The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru clearly has the best bouquet amongst the A.F. Gros range: wonderful, minerally red berry fruit, dried flowers and just a hint of warm gravel in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is very well judged and there is a creamy texture lending harmony to this Richebourg. I do think it is the most complex Richebourg I have tasted from the domaine in recent years, but it is one of the most sensual. Give it 8-10 years in bottle so that it can show what it can do.
BH 91-93 (4/2016): ( the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could keep the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole of Domaine Michel Gros. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Once again there is also enough oak influence to notice though not enough to appreciably detract from the high-toned and overtly spicy red currant, violet and plum-suffused nose. There is a lovely minerality to the supple and forward middle weight plus flavors where the mid-palate is almost soft. This is a somewhat curious showing as I like the refinement and impressive length but the depth is at present only average. My range offers the benefit of the doubt that this will revert to its usual level of quality in time. Drink 2026+. |

JM 93 (9/2017): Medium deep red purple, oak and a touch of oxidation has slightly affected the nose, causing some stewed fruit. It also makes the wine a bit clumsy in the mouth, and there is a lot of oak, but there is also a sign of very high class fruit typical of the vineyard. So this sample is not working today but I suspect a really fine wine underneath.
BH 91 (4/2017): An airy and markedly floral nose also reveals spicy notes of both red and dark currant, spice and plenty of earth character. There is good richness to the vibrant and overtly mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that retain fine delineation on the elegant, dusty and well-balanced finish. At present this seems to lack the mid-palate stuffing I'm used to seeing from the best vintages though I suspect that this will very likely fill out with time in bottle. In sum, 2014 appears to be a very good but not genuinely great vintage for this consistently excellent wine. Drink 2024+. |

Rich, broad, ripe and dry; more mouthfilling than the foregoing samples but still with a light touch. (The pH here is 3.4, but Lafon noted that the '15s have lower pHs and higher acidity.) Lovely depth to the fruit, spice and soil tones. Finishes very long, with refined tannins, superb energy and excellent balance. This will probably be accessible relatively early, like the Monthelie. BH 92 (4/2017): (from 40+ year old vines planted in shallow, high clay content soil sitting on a bed of solid rock.) An elegant, cool and beautifully complex nose displays a discreetly spicy array of red berries plum, violets, tea and a wisp of warm earth. There is really lovely delineation to the concentrated and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that exhibit a taut muscularity while remaining refined and well-balanced on the firm but not austere finale. This is often a very impressive wine chez Lafon but in 2014 it is a bit more elegant than usual. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

BH 92 (1/2017): This is the first wine to display any appreciable wood with its cooler and even spicier combination of red current, cassis and pretty violet scents. The utterly delicious and more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors possess lovely underlying tension before culminating in a refined finale that displays a discreet touch of youthful austerity. This is also very good stuff and worth considering. (Drink starting 2022).
VM 92 (6/2024): The 2014 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a very attractive bouquet that has a little more fruit and vigor than its peers. Blackberries, morels and leather touches come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, but there is a little more flesh compared to others. Hickory-tinged red fruit with a dash of Chinese 5-spice appear towards the finish. Drinking perfectly now, but I sense that it would improve with decanting. (Drink between 2023-2033). Neal Martin.
WA 91 (10/2017): Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, the 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Chaignots has a vivacious, open and generous bouquet lavished with black cherries, cassis and wild strawberry fruit that is succinctly interwoven into the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied and quite sumptuous on the entry, more primal than its peers with plenty of black cherry and strawberry fruit, a fine thread of acidity and a very pure finish. It still has a long way to go, but this gutsy Nuits-Saint-Georges from Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée at Mugneret-Gibourg has potential. Tasted September 2017. |

There is fine richness to the notably round middle weight flavors that are blessed with good volume and a succulent texture where the moderately firm but well-balanced finish is again mildly rustic and austere. (Drink starting 2021).
WA 88-90 (12/2015): The 2014 Pommard Village la Croix Blanche is usually blended with Pommard Noizons...at least when it is not being destroyed 100% by hail. It has a punchy blackcurrant and iodine-tinged bouquet that is quite Volnay-like. The palate is medium-bodied with a grainy texture, a little disjointed at the moment but it will coalesce with time. There is good salinity on the finish here and the 35% new oak is nicely integrated. This should grow up to be a thoroughly decent Pommard. |

| BH 93-95 (1/2016): ( from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) Once again the adjective lavish is the best one to describe the oak treatment on the ultra-spicy, ripe and attractively fresh nose of black cherry, earth, underbrush and softly floral aromas. There is flat out incredible density to the extract rich and imposingly scaled flavors that completely coat the palate with sap before culminating in a velvety yet superbly intense finish that seems to just go on and on. Once again though note well that plenty of patience is going to be required before this incredible beauty of a Charmes is ready to roll. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! |

There is both fine volume and intensity to the punchy flavors that are more refined than usual thanks to the fine grain of the supporting tannins on the attractively well-balanced and persistent finish. | BH 97 (1/2017): There is enough wood to notice framing the exuberantly spicy red and dark currant aromas that display an abundance of sauvage and earth nuances. The cool and pure medium weight plus flavors are remarkably refined for a young Chambertin yet there is clearly plenty of power lurking beneath the refined veneer. This is a big but not massive vintage for the Rousseau Cham and I like the sense of proportion and particularly so on the harmonious, superbly long and seamlessly well-balanced finale. As is the case with the 2015 vintage, it's going to be very interesting to see which of these two is the better wine in 15 to 20 years. Drink 2032+. |

Very pure, silky wine with subtle sweetness and a seamless texture to its sappy fruit, spice and saline mineral flavors. Boasts a terrific combination of thickness and energy. Here too there is a discreet application of wood framing the overtly floral aromas that include both lavender and rose along with notes of earth and freshly crushed red berries. The beautifully sleek and intense middle weight flavors exhibit an appealing hint of minerality on the refined, balanced and dusty finish. Lovely and understated. Drink 2024+. |

BH 94 (1/2017): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) Deep ruby. A completely different aromatic profile is present with its much earthier array of notably fresh red berries and discreet sauvage aromas where a touch of elegance is provided by notes of violet and lilac. There is excellent richness to the muscular and full-bodied flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration that coats the mouth and helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the seamlessly proportioned finale. This very firmly structured effort is clearly going to require 15 to 20 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2029+.
VM 93+ (3/2017): Good dark red. Musky, soil-driven aromas of dark cherry, sappy pomegranate, wild herbs and brown spices. Densely packed and silky but with excellent definition and energy to its dark berry, menthol, dark chocolate and herb flavors. Much broader than the Chambolle 1er Cru but also less evolved. VM 95+ (3/2017): Bright, dark red. Knockout nose offers most of the Musigny food groups: raspberry, cherry, earth, wild herbs, flowers and minerals, plus a leathery nuance. Pungent and extremely intense but utterly weightless owing to its near-perfect balance of sweetness and juiciness. Best today on the explosive, building back end, which offers a powerfully chewy, sappy impression but no rough edges. Winemaker François Millet suggests waiting at least 10 to 15 years. BH 95 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) While highly complex this is cool to the point of only grudgingly revealing a strikingly layered combination of violets, rose petals, sandalwood, anise, clove, plum and dark currant scents. This is a big and overtly muscular wine with broad-shouldered and admirably concentrated flavors yet for all of the impressive size, weight and volume, the massively long finish is serene, even Zen-like. 2014 is a relatively seductive and forward vintage for this storied wine, and I appreciate that calling a wine "forward" when it will likely need 20 years to fully mature is a relative concept! This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
