VM 92 (4/2017): Medium red. Aromas of plum and truffle are joined by musky wild notes and a balsamic quality on the rather soft nose. Supple and savory right now, with brown spice and earth notes dominating the middle palate. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and noteworthy length and grip. Not a particularly fruity style but has energy. Nicolas Groffier ventured the opinion that this vintage "has stabilized since 2005" and wondered out loud whether the wine's touch of sweetness, which he said was not apparent earlier, comes from its alcohol. Stephen Tanzer. BH 89 (1/2004): The expressive nose this displayed from cask has been replaced by a reserved, brooding, backward one though it displays understated and fresh red and black fruit aromas framed by obvious toast notes and followed by harmonious, sappy, full-bodied, powerful flavors that are not especially precise but extremely long. The overall impression is a bit too supple to be a classic Bonnes Mares but it's very pretty all the same. Drink 2007-2013. |

VM 93+ (4/2009): Good bright, dark red. Briary blueberry nose shows a captivating crushed-fruit urgency. Wonderfully energetic and pure in the mouth, with pristine flavors of cassis and blueberry. Extremely primary wine-and more powerful than the 2007. Finishes with firm but fine tannins and palate-saturating perfume. BH 90-93 (1/2008): This too carries subtle wood toast coupled with a bit of wood spice that sets off the layered black fruit and slightly sauvage notes that are clearly picked up by the rich, full, muscled and notably powerful flavors that seemed less structured than they really are because of the velvety mouth feel and huge length. This is very fresh and energetic yet there is the classic young Bonnes Mares reserve which suggests that this will require the better part of a decade to reach full maturity, indeed perhaps even a bit longer. Drink 2014+. |

WA 95+ (5/2011): The 2009 Bonnes Mares opens with knockout aromatics that meld into layers of fresh, vibrant fruit. Medium in body yet wonderfully intense in its flavors, the Bonnes Mares impresses for its class and balance. An array of dark fruit, minerals, violets and white flowers linger on the pointed, saline finish. Groffier’s vines in Bonnes Mares sit on a slope with both terres rouges and terres blanches. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039. VM 92+ (4/2012): Good medium red. Primary aromas of blackberry, wild herbs and pepper, along with a whiff of game. Dense and closed today, conveying a strong impression of power. There's a slightly sugary quality to the black raspberry fruit, but also a distinctly savory character to the notes of licorice, fresh herbs and underbrush. The cooler sites are a bit less 2009-typical, noted Nicolas Groffier, ". . . a bit 2005-like." Finishes very long, with substantial dusty tannins and a piquant hint of lemon rind. BH 92 (1/2012): ( from a .97 ha parcel of 40+ year old vines). This opens with noticeable reduction and though it doesn't dissipate immediately, it eventually recedes to the background where it doesn't overtly detract from the otherwise attractive mix of dark berry fruit, earth and rose petal aromas. The supple, round and delicious yet utterly serious medium-bodied flavors possess good verve and a sophisticated mouth feel and while this is not an especially concentrated or powerful example of this grand cru, it is beautifully balanced. An understated 2009 that, much like the Amoureuses, will drink well young yet should be capable of rewarding 7 to 10 years of cellar time. Drink 2017+. |

| VM 93+ (3/2013): Good full red. Very subdued nose hints at redcurrant, spicy herbs and underbrush. Highly concentrated but youthfully tight, with a lightly saline quality to the complex flavors of blueberry, wild herbs, sandalwood and mocha. Just this side of thick but its superb balance of sweetness and acidity keeps it vibrant in the mouth. The long, ripely tannic finish features an exhilarating salty minerality. I may be underrating this. |

| VM 92 (3/2016): Deep red-ruby. Wild blueberry, blackberry, licorice and herbs on the nose, with piquant accents of black pepper and violet building with air. Dense, juicy and youthfully imploded, with dark berry flavors complicated by game and leather nuances. Doesn't show the sweetness or early volume of the Amoureuses but this very silky, seamless wine softened nicely with aeration. Really saturates the mouth and builds on the juicy back end. |

| VM 93 (3/2014): Rich and explosive to the core, Groffier's 2011 Chambertin Clos de Bèze hits the palate with huge dark blue/purplish fruit, violets, menthol and cloves. Even with all of the intensity, power and voluptuousness, my preference is to drink the Groffier Burgundies sooner rather than later. The inclusion of 50% whole clusters adds complexity and dimension. This is an especially bold, fruit-driven Bèze, but it all works. Antonio Galloni. |

VM 92 (3/2004): Good deep red. Expressive, superripe aromas of briary currant and blueberry, menthol and mocha. Wonderfully sweet and aromatic in the mouth, with highly concentrated, nearly candied flavors of blackberry pie and framboise Shows a surmuri aspect that reminded me of grenache, but a firm spine of acidity gives the wine freshness and grip. Still a bit youthfully unforthcoming and in need of three to five years of aging. A powerful, extraordinarily ripe 2001 that finishes with big, tongue-dusting tannins and explosive length. Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2004): Sexy, complex and perfumed aromas merge seamlessly with round, plump, sappy, medium weight flavors underpinned by ripe structure and subtle acidity. There is lovely balance here and this is extremely stylish with another dimension of complexity and overall finesse plus a velvety finish. Drink 2007-2013. |

VM 93 (4/2009): Bright dark red. Captivating nose offers redcurrant, raspberry, iron, tobacco, minerals and coffee. Lush, silky and sweet; youthfully reticent in the mouth but already offers an ineffably complex perfume. Boasts impressively fine, late-arriving tannins for the vintage. The wine's firm acid/tannin spine gives the finish excellent bite. A beauty. BH 90-92 (1/2008): Here there is a bit more obvious wood spice, mixed espresso and sexy black and blue fruit aromas that merge into rich, full and velvety medium-bodied flavors that are concentrated and textured with another dimension of complexity on the admirably long finish that also evidences a trace of toast. Drink 2013+. Sweet spot Outstanding! |

WA 93 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is a bit unusual for this site. The fruit shows more depth, concentration and overt richness than most wines from this vineyard. The signature perfume emerges with time, but this remains a wine essentially built on an intense core of fruit. Groffier used 10% stems here. The finish shows a little heat, which is the only thing that keeps the score from going higher. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 93 (5/2011): The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is a bit unusual for this site. The fruit shows more depth, concentration and overt richness than most wines from this vineyard. In contrast to its 1er siblings, this is really quite pretty and while there was a trace of reduction at first, it disappeared within 3 minutes so it's a non-issue for the Amoureuses. Otherwise, the nose is really quite pretty with the hallmark spice and wet stone nuances that add depth to the ripe yet cool and elegant red berry fruit aromas. There is a supple and very Chambollesque quality to the refined and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that offer good if not truly sensational depth and length. This is also relatively forward and while it will certainly age, I was surprised at how civilized it is already. Drink 2016+. |

| VM 92+ (4/2013): Bright, full red, less ruby than the Sentiers. Musky aromas and flavors of raspberry, redcurrant, smoke, spices and white pepper. | WA 93 (8/2014): Robert Groffier’s 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses was tasted blind in a line-up of 2011 Amoureuses in Holland. It has a deep ruby color, but the nose is far more backward than the first two wines, a little more herbaceous and tertiary (perhaps with some more stem addition?) but still well-defined. But it is certainly less flamboyant than Drouhin and Lucien le Moine’s Amoureuses ’11, though returning on my second run-through, the wine unfurls supremely well and gains intensity. The palate is very intense and very fresh, very citric with good tension, although it does not quite have the complexity that the aromatics suggest. Reticent and masculine, this needs 4-5 years in bottle. Tasted June 2014. |

VM 92+ (3/2016): (50% new oak, 50% vendange entier): Bright, dark red. Captivating perfume of black raspberry, rose petal and orange zest, plus a wild leathery quality. Quite plush and thick, conveying a noble rusticity to the blackberry and violet flavors. At once powerful and suave, with a fine-grained texture given cut and shape by excellent acidity. Finishes brisk and long, with late hints of fresh blood and leather as well as a slight bitter edge that calls for patience. WA 92 (12/2015): The 2013 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru les Amoureuses has a well defined bouquet with detailed black cherry and blueberry aromas, quite harmonious with a touch of lemon rind in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, well judged acidity, and there is a little tightness perhaps here. There is a fine seem of acidity, though perhaps the elegance of the 2014 means that it does not quite reach the same heights. Nice saline finish though -- drink this over the next 10-15 years. |

| JM 91-93 (11/2023): 35% new wood, 50% whole bunch. The first to be picked reflecting the sandy soil here. A fresh vivid purple. Fresh white pepper on the nose. There is a herbaceous touch which I must say I really rather like but will not be for everyone. Mixed ripeness perhaps is what gives a sense of complexity. A long keeper for Nicolas. Some firmer elements rather than a softer rounder version. Drink from 2029-2036. |

VM 91 (4/2009): Good bright red. Musky black raspberry, stone, licorice, menthol and brown spices on the nose. Tight but fairly pliant, with a distinctly briary fruit character complicated by stone and menthol. This rich, structured wine finishes with serious building tannins and excellent length. WA 91 (12/2009): Sweet, pure, fresh cherry and lingonberry along with correspondingly high-toned distilled fruit suggestions on the nose and palate of Groffier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Sentiers mingle with maritime salinity for a richly-ripe yet invigorating and refreshing display. This has the tenderness of tannin and relatively elegance of which its vintage is memorably capable, yet there is fat and structure in reserve, I suspect, for a decade's worth of satisfying evolution. Notes of chalk and char add intimations of an evolving mineral and carnal dimension to the finish. BH 89-91 (1/2008): (40+ year old vines and 20% new wood). A noticeable if discreet touch of wood toast frames more deeply pitched and slightly riper dark and blue berry fruit aromas that complement the rich, full and round flavors that also possess an attractive mouth feel on the precise, intense and persistent finish. As befits its position below Bonnes Mares, this is slightly firmer with more evident minerality. Also worth considering. Drink 2013+. |

| VM 91 (3/2016): (50% new oak; 80% vendange entier): Deep, bright red. Reduced, wild aromas of black raspberry, licorice and game. In a large-scaled, sweet, rather powerful style, with plenty of salty extract to buffer its strong acidity. The wine's volume belies the fact that grape sugars at harvest were just below 12 degrees. Big tannins build with air. This will need time in the cellar to assume its adult shape. |

| BH 89-91 (4/2017): (this is actually a premier cru but it is not declared as such.) A ripe and dense nose is composed primarily by notes of plum, violet and warm earth nuances. As is typically the case there is more size, weight and power to the equally dense medium-bodied flavors that possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firmly structured but well-balanced finish. Patience required. Drink 2025+. Outstanding Top Value! |

| VM 95 (1/2018): Saturated ruby. Youthfully imploded aromas and flavors of blackberry, cassis and licorice show no roasted character ("the color of the wine is the only thing that gives away the vintage," noted Guillaume d'Angerville). More pliant than the 2016 but with a magical sugar/acid equilibrium and a complicating element of savory minerality. This insidiously palate-saturating wine finishes with outstanding slatey persistence and grip. I would imagine that this will be long-lived but will it ever really shut down in the bottle? It's hard to imagine that this fruit was harvested on September 4. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 88 (1/2017): (bottled in mid-August; vinified with 80% whole clusters): Lovely spicy Pinot aromas and flavors of raspberry, minerals, flowers and dark chocolate. A very fresh, juicy Bourgogne Rouge with terrific gulpability. Stephen Tanzer. BH 88 (1/2017): (from 60+ year old vines based on the original pinot fin strain that is so highly regarded today.) A cool, pretty and pure nose reflects notes of various red berries, floral and a hint of earth. There is terrific energy and fine detail to the utterly delicious flavors that possess outstanding depth and length for a regional wine. Recommended. Drink 2018+. Outstanding Top Value! |

VM 97 (11/2018): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a tightly coiled bouquet of high-toned red fruit, raspberry, red currant, pressed violets and iris, and later a hint of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, coming across as fresh and lively but very linear and strict at the moment - more like a Clos Saint-Denis in style. But there is a nobility about this wine, and it is certainly persistent. This is one of several wines that shot way past my estimation from barrel. Bravo. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Drink between 2023-2055. Neal Martin. BH 94 (1/2018): An overtly sauvage nose reflects notes of humus, earth and very ripe dark currant aromas. The big, powerful and impressively concentrated flavors possess absolutely outstanding length and richness. This mouth-coating effort is exceptionally firm and unlike the Charmes, this is not likely to drink well before at least 10 years of bottle age and it may require fully 20 to reach its full prime. Either way, this is really very impressive. Drink starting 2033. |

| VM 91-93 (1/2017): (100% vendange entier; the Boillots work these vines in Grand Maupertuis themselves): Saturated deep red. Aromas of black cherry, licorice and rose petal communicate striking fruity lift for young Clos Vougeot. Very rich, sappy and deep, but but with no sign of overripeness and markedly different in style from the Côte de Beaune samples that preceded it in my tasting, partly due to its whole-cluster treatment. This distinctly fine-grained Clos Vougeot has clearly benefited from the weather conditions of 2015. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 93 (4/2018): From vines planted in the 1950s, the 2015 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Lavières is a one of the highlights of the range this year, wafting from the glass with a fragrant and projected bouquet of orange rind, potpourri, plum, raspberry and incipient forest floor. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, velvety and sapid, with a rich attack, succulent acids, an ample chassis of fine-grained tannins and a long, saline finish. A superb Lavières that has yet to shut down. BH 92 (4/2017): Discreet wood and menthol notes frame the very ripe aromas of cassis, violet, earth and spice. There is once again excellent richness, volume and sappy dry extract to the middle weight plus flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the refined and impressively long finish. This is certainly quite ripe but there is good tension and this should amply repay extended cellaring. (Drink starting 2025). VM 88+ (1/2018): Full, dark red. Very ripe aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and savory soil tones. Quite silky, ripe and chocolatey; in fact, very rich and a bit aggressive for Savigny-lès-Beaune, and just this side of heavy. Supple and broad but without any easy sweetness, finishing with substantial tannins. This savory, chocolatey, rather powerful wine is in a less fruity style than the estate's 2016s and comes across as a bit youthfully disjointed and in need of patience. (Incidentally, Chandon de Briailles also bottled a tiny quantity of this wine with any added sulfur, but even this cuvée has only 36 ppm of total sulfur, according to Claude de Nicolay.) (Drink between 2021-2028). Stephen Tanzer. |

Liqueur-like black raspberry, dark cherry and bitter chocolate on the nose. Very ripe, full, powerful Volnay; quite chewy and sappy, with captivating saline soil character and a rather massive tannic structure that calls for patience. | VM 96+ (11/2018): The 2015 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has a very intense, almost precocious bouquet of perfumed black cherry, boysenberry, pencil box and cold black tea, all beautifully defined. A subtle rusty tincture surfaces with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded, supple tannin, an equal offering of red and black fruit laced with graphite, and almost Bordeaux "Graves" notes toward the beautifully focused, sustained finish. It ameliorates considerably in the glass, cajoling me to up my score. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin. |

| BH 91-94 (1/2017): A notably ripe and wonderfully spicy nose reflects notes of liqueur-like dark cherry, cassis, plum and violet. The dense, serious and markedly powerful big-bodied flavors brim with dry extract before terminating in a muscular and impressively long finish that also displays a hint of warmth. This is an imposingly-scaled and quite firmly structured effort that will require 12 to 15 years of bottle to arrive at its apogee. Patience. Drink 2027+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 89 (1/2018): (from Porroux, Le Village, Clos Solon and Les Herbuottes.) A ripe but fresh nose combines both red currant and floral-suffused aromas with those of lavender, earth and a hint of oak. There is good intensity and freshness to the relatively robust middle weight flavors that possess fine delineation before culminating in a youthfully austere, dusty and mouth coating finale where a hint of warmth appears. A quality villages and worth a look. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

WA 90-92 (12/2016): The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru comes from four different lieux-dits from north to south of the appellation. It has an attractive bouquet with black cherries, bilberry and orange blossom; the oak neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, masculine in style with subtle tobacco notes infusing the slightly broody and yet fresh and tensile finish. It deserves a couple of years in bottle and should evolve into a very attractive Morey-Saint-Denis. BH 90-92 (1/2017): A ripe yet agreeably fresh nose features notes of plum, spice, earth and pretty floral nuances. There is both good richness and punch to the medium-bodied and fleshy flavors that tighten up significantly on the overtly powerful and entirely serious finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. (Drink starting 2027). VM 89-92 (1/2017): Pungent spices and minerals on the nose, but with a more subdued fruit element than the village version. A step up in concentration and density in the mouth but quite backward in the early going and dominated by its structure. Finishes with firm-edged tannins and a strong spicy character. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 96 (5/2018): An extremely ripe nose manages to avoid any sense of surmaturite on the liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, cassis, anise and lilac scents. This is a massive wine, with huge mid-palate concentration, power and muscle that terminates in a borderline painfully intense finale that both coats the palate and lasts for minutes. I take considerable pains to point out however that this ultra-structured and overtly austere effort is not only built for the long haul but for the very long haul. I have suggested an initial drinking window of 30 years from now but it may very well be longer. In sum, this brilliant effort is very old school Corton that I wouldn't even consider opening for at least 10 years. Try from 2035+. |

| BH 93-95 (1/2017): ( from both Mazis Haut and Bas where the two parcels total a remarkable 1.20 ha.) A more deeply pitched nose is composed by notes of dark berry fruit, spice, earth and a hint of animale. There is obvious minerality to the rich, full and naturally sweet broad-scaled yet relatively elegant flavors that are solidly structured, muscular and wonderfully intense while delivering superb complexity on the hugely long and moderately rustic finish. This gorgeous effort is indisputably built for long-term aging. Dirnk 2033+. Don't miss! |

| BH 92 (1/2018): There is just enough reduction present to push the ripe mix of earthy dark fruit and underbrush aromas to the background so I would suggest decanting this for half an hour first if you're tempted to try a bottle young. There is ample dry extract on the robust, muscular and intense flavors that display a distinct gaminess on the textured and solidly long and dusty finish that is supported by ripe tannins. This will require at least a decade for this full-boded, rustic and very serious effort to come together. Drink 2027+. |

| VM 93 (1/2018): Full medium red. Captivating aromas of dark cherry, dried rose, lavender and crushed rock. Juicy and intensely flavored, offering excellent definition to its penetrating flavors of raspberry, cherry and saline minerality. Shows limited early sweetness but the wine's long, slowly mounting finish features dusty, well-buffered tannins and terrific saline energy. Part of this vineyard is on pure rock with very little topsoil and the strong mineral element thoroughly buffers the alcohol of the vintage. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 94 (4/2018): This is more obviously 2015 in style than any of the preceding wines with its very ripe aromas of cassis, roasted plum, spice and plenty of earth nuances. The exceptionally rich and opulently concentrated big-bodied flavors possess a caressing mouth feel thanks to the equally good level of sappy dry extract, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, robust and rustic finale. This too is very much built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least a decade before it will begin to drink reasonably well. In short, this is terrific but patience strongly advised. WA 94+ (10/2018): The 2015 Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Epenots is immensely promising and will be well worth seeking out when the Gaunoux family finally decides to release it. Offering up a deep bouquet in which aromas of cherries, cassis and plums mingle with nuances of dark chocolate, licorice and cedar, it's a medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated wine with considerable amplitude and structure, underpinned by tangy acids. While the wine is already elegant and harmonious, its fine-grained but firm tannins are abundant: given the track record of Gaunoux's wines, I wouldn't expect this to show all its cards until its 20th birthday. BH 93 (4/2018): Here too there is a hint of wood to the more complex nose that displays an impressively broad array of spice, earth, underbrush and dark currant aromas laced with hints of the sauvage. There is outstanding richness to the powerful and velvet-textured big-bodied flavors blessed with an abundance of dry extract that relegates the firm tannins to the background on the mouth coating and gorgeous persistent finish. This is a burly and muscular effort that is not especially rustic though one that will require plenty of cellar time to reach its peak. (Drink starting 2030). |

WA 89-91 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambolle Musigny la Combe d'Orveaux has a fragrant bouquet with raspberry preserve, wild strawberry and mulberry scents - not the most complex you will come across in Chambolle, but I appreciate the purity of fruit. The palate is well balanced with red cherry and mulberry, gentle and harmonious, an easygoing and self-effacing Chambolle-Musigny that should give drinking pleasure soon after bottling. VM 88-91 (1/2017): Palish red. Like a pungent salad of red berries on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. Vibrant pomegranate and cranberry flavors are framed by juicy acidity and complicated by a lightly savory quality. The resounding red-fruit finish is lifted by a note of crushed flowers. Stephen Tanzer. BH 87-90 (1/2017): Here the expressive nose is at once more elegant and noticeably fresher with aromas of both red and dark currant, violet and a pretty hint of spice. There is good minerality and much better verve to the delicious appealingly textured medium weight flavors that deliver solid length on the reasonably complex finish. This should be approachable young if desired. (Drink starting 2019). |

VM 91-94 (1/2017): Good medium red but not as dark as the Vosne villages. Captivating scents of redcurrant, rose petal and tobacco. Ripe and rather powerful for this cuvée, like a coulis of red fruits intensified by penetrating acidity. The tannins are chewy and tactile but not dry, with the finish displaying terrific fruit retention. Stephen Tanzer. BH 89-91 (1/2017): Moderate wood sets off the markedly spicy aromas of liqueur-like dark pinot fruit, violet and lilac. There is impressive volume to the full-bodied but highly seductive flavors that coat the palate on the toasty and somewhat warm finale. This should also drink well on the younger side if desired. (Drink starting 2022) WA 91-93 (12/2016): The 2015 Echézeaux Grand Cru, which comes from the lieu-dit of Les Loachausses, has a very expressive bouquet with vibrant red and black fruit, overtly classic in style, perhaps more reserved than previous vintages that I have tasted, yet conveying the terroir in convincing fashion. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, cedar, touches of white pepper with fine structure and tension all the way through to the finish. It needed time to open so I would afford this 3-4 years in bottle. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2017): (the Richebourg parcel now totals .6 ha after it was combined with the vines that formerly belonged to Michel Gros, which he agreed to exchange so that he could retain the Vosne 1er Clos de Reas as a monopole. The Richebourg vines have been replanted 3 times and they are now 15+, 25+ and 70+ years of age.) Prominent, but not dominant, oak and menthol characters are present on the ultra-spicy nose of attractively fresh red and dark cherry aromas that are trimmed in tea, sandalwood and hoisin nuances. The bigger, richer and more mineral-driven flavors also coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the overtly powerful and driving finish that goes on and on. This is not a huge version of the appellation but the focus and sense of harmony are certainly admirable. Patience required. Drink 2030+. |

VM 96 (1/2018): Bright medium red. Sexy, soil-driven aromas of red cherry, raspberry, underbrush, rose petal and salty minerality; wonderfully subtle and complex. Silky on entry, then densely packed but weightless in the mid-palate, displaying outstanding inner-mouth spicy, floral lift to its intense red fruit and saline mineral flavors. A creamy, utterly seamless old-vines Chapelle with extremely refined tannins and inexorable subtle rising length. Outstanding--but will this wine shut down hard in bottle? Really captures the best qualities of the vintage without sacrificing its typicity. (Drink between 2026-2040) BH 94 (4/2018): This displays noticeable wood influence though here it's more in the form of menthol than toast though it's not so much as to materially impede the appreciation of the notably ripe red cherry and overtly floral-scented nose where ample hints of the sauvage and warm earth eventually appear. There is remarkably good concentration as the old vine sap is immediately evident whilst coating the palate and pushing the markedly firm tannic spine to the background on the powerful and intensely mineral-driven if noticeably warm finale. Despite the impressive size, weight and power this is actually more refined than usual but even so, it's going to require a very long snooze in an appropriately cool cellar. In sum, this is seriously good Chapelle. (Drink starting 2035). |

BH 92-94 (4/2017): Notes of wood and menthol combine with those of red currant, dark raspberry and plenty of earth and game scents. The velvety yet quite powerful big-bodied flavors also brim with sappy dry extract that pushes the otherwise notably firm tannic spine to the background on the built-to-age, balanced and wonderfully persistent finale. Drink 2032+. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru has a voluminous and extravagant bouquet with blooms of red berry fruit, although I found myself more drawn to the complex and intellectual Clos Saint-Denis. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. This is a masculine, assertive Clos de la Roche, quite saline in the mouth with a feisty, spicy finish. This is a fine grand cru from Louis Jadot, though not one of their top releases this vintage. VM 90-92 (1/2017): (a blend of purchased wine from two sources): Good full red. Aromas of cherry, herbs and oak show a youthfully medicinal quality. Powerful but a touch dry; this strikes me a bit energetically extracted at the expense of the vintage's potential silkiness. The medicinal menthol quality is complicated by notes of brown spices and earth, but the wine's primary fruit is very much in the background today. Finishes dry and imploded, with strong tannins. Not my favorite style of Clos de la Roche. Jadot has eight barrels of this wine, four made via a classic vinification, according to Barnier, and four using more modern, extractive techniques. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 94+ (2/2019): Bright medium red. Wonderfully pure, inviting nose combines strawberry, raspberry, rose petal, spices, white pepper and blood orange: I might have picked this essence of Burgundy as a Chambolle-Musigny! Plush, silky and fine-grained but tactile and substantial as well, boasting terrific energy for its vintage. (The vines benefited from the cooler temperatures and well-timed rainfall in August, which enable the wine to retain freshness, noted Frederic Barnier.) The wine's very primary red berry, spice and floral flavors display seductive sweetness but a strong element of saline minerality accentuates the overall dry impression. A great wine in the making, showing an almost peppery vibrancy today; I would not be surprised if this shut down in the bottle in the near future. Stephen Tanzer. |

WA 94+ (10/2018): Tasted blind, Jadot's 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques confirmed the seriousness it displayed earlier this year, unwinding with aeration to reveal a youthfully reserved bouquet of sweet red fruits, raw cocoa, rich soil and dried rose petal, framed by a judicious application of cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, reserved and concentrated, with fine-grained but firm structuring tannins, tangy acids and impressive length. This Clos Saint-Jacques is shutting down, so it's all about future potential, but its showing in this tasting suggested that when all is said and done, it may well be the Clos Saint-Jacques of the vintage. VM 94 (11/2018): The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St.-Jacques 1er Cru has a more tightly knit bouquet than Fourrier and Brunco Clair's own Clos St.-Jacques: very pure and focused, perhaps not quite as detailed and mineral-driven as the latter, but attractive all the same. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and impressive depth, and quite grippy at the moment, if not quite delivering the details and nuance or the same mineralité as the best Clos Saint-Jacques on the finish. Yet it is still a seriously fine wine. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2045). Neal Martin. |

| BH 94 (1/2018): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine age - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 100% whole cluster.) Here too the nose is quite ripe yet very fresh with its layered array of spicy and markedly floral-inflected black cherry and plum scents that are trimmed in both discreet wood and menthol nuances. There is impressive size, weight and power to the more mineral-driven and refined medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by a distinctly firm tannic spine on the wonderfully persistent and mildly austere finale. This is first-rate and one serious wine in 2015 and thus be prepared to allow it at least 10 to 12 years first. Drink 2027+. |

VM 90+ (1/2018): Moderately saturated medium red. Very ripe but not roasted on the nose, with its raspberry fruit complicated by spices and sexy earth tones, plus a slightly metallic whiff of cassis bud reduction. Juicy, spicy and savory but still a bit youthfully imploded for village wine. At once less sweet and less floral than the 2016 version, but if that wine is more fun, this one is deeper. Finishes with a firm tannic spine. (Drink between 2022-2029). Stephen Tanzer. BH 90 (1/2018): A notably ripe yet agreeably fresh nose offers up notes of various dark berries, spice, floral elements and discreet earth nuances. The notably rich medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely mouthfeel thanks to the solid mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a velvety yet punchy and refreshing finale that is sufficiently firm to warrant holding this for at least a few years first. Recommended. (Drink starting 2022). |

| BH 89 (1/2018): (a .78 ha parcel of vines between 50 and 70 years of age.) This is also sufficiently reduced to require a thorough aeration if you're tempted to sip this in its youth. VM 93+ (1/2018): Good medium red. Wild nose offers hints of superripe red raspberry, mocha and leather, with a fresher violet note emerging with air. A very ripe, almost roasted style with terrific chewy concentration--and more juicy purple-fruit lift than the nose would suggest. Finishes with a powerful spine of chewy tannins and very good precision. Stephen Tanzer. WA 94-96 (12/2016): The 2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from the Mazoyères sector, has a gorgeous bouquet in the making with joyful red berry fruit mixed with cold stone and subtle oyster shell aromas, the 30% new oak deftly integrated and barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy, vibrant opening. There are layers of tart red cherry fruit, crushed strawberry, citrus peel and quince fanning out wonderful towards the finish, which exerts a gentle but insistent grip. What a fabulous Charmes-Chambertin from Laurent and Hubert Lignier. BH 91-93 (1/2017): (from a tiny .10 ha parcel of vines in Mazoyères.) A hint of wood spice frames brooding if very fresh and layered aromas of red fruits, earth, underbrush and humus. The rich, naturally sweet, sappy and again, beautifully textured medium full-bodied flavors are quite round and balanced yet the finish is almost robust and decidedly powerful. This is an interesting wine as it is at once succulent yet very serious. Drink 2027+. |

WA 94 (4/2018): The 2015 Morey St Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is a wonderful rendition of this reliably superb cuvée—which hails from old vines in Faconnières and Chenevery that always produce very small, shot berries. The wine offers up a bouquet of red and black fruits, dark soil tones, raw cocoa and pencil lead, gently framed by new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied and multidimensional, with a deep core of fruit and excellent sappy energy that carries through the long finish. Its tannins are beautifully cloaked in fruit. The Ligniers call this their baby Clos de la Roche and it’s easy to see why. VM 93 (11/2018): The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru has a wonderful, detailed, charming bouquet of red currant, cranberry and bergamot scents entwined with rose petals and minerals. The palate is well balanced, displaying fine definition, gentle grip and a hint of dried blood filtered through the slightly darker-than-expected fruit on the finish. I appreciate the structure here - très Morey-Saint-Denis. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2020-2040). Neal Martin. |

BH 91-94 (4/2017): This is also appealingly elegant with its pretty liqueur-like red pinot fruit, spice, sandalwood and subtle earth scents. The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors remains refined, lacy and focused with a lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly firmer finish. Lovely. VM 92-94 (1/2017): Good dark red. Subdued but precise aromas of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This beauty boasts a firm spine of acidity and finishes with lovely ripeness and lingering perfume. Stephen Tanzer. WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

BH 94 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) This is almost as elegant as the Griotte but with a different aromatic profile that runs more toward a slightly darker range of fruit, earth, game and discreet violet notes where there is again plenty of wood influence. There is good refinement to the pure and beautifully detailed big-bodied and impressively concentrated flavors that brim with palate coating dry extract that buffers the very firm tannic spine on the hugely long but not especially austere and slightly warm finale. A classic Roty Charmes. Drink 2030+. VM 94-97 (1/2017): Full ruby-red. Very pure but youthfully brooding aromas of black fruits, licorice, violet and minerals. Strikingly sappy and primary, conveying near-painful intensity to its tightly wound black fruit and saline mineral flavors. This complete, impeccably balanced Charmes-Chambertin expands spectacularly on the rising, palate-staining back end, saturating the taste buds and leaving the mouth vibrating. A perfect blueprint for a 25+-year wine. A good portion of these vines date back to the vineyard's original post-Phylloxera graftings in 1881, but as the family has never used pesticides or chemical fertilizers these old vines still routinely yield a healthy crop--35 hectoliters per hectare in 2015. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 91 (1/2018): A more deeply pitched nose combines notes of dark currant, earth, underbrush and discreet humus nuances. There is fine richness and plenty of punch to the more voluminous and once again solidly concentrated flavors that are shaped by surprisingly sleek tannins on the firm, highly complex, lengthy and impeccably well-balanced finish save for a trace of warmth. This firm and dusty effort will need all of a decade to shed its core of tannins and become more user friendly. Drink 2025+. Outstanding! |

| BH 96 (1/2018): There is just enough wood present to mention but not so much as to materially detract from the attractively fresh, cool, pretty and airy red berry, earth, humus, anise and rose petal-scented aromas. The refined yet quite powerful middle weight are almost painfully intense and there is so much minerality the mouthfeel is akin to rolling small stones around in your mouth particularly so on the sappy, palate coating and hugely long finish. This too is seriously impressive and very classy. (Drink starting 2032). |

BH 98 (1/2018): (100% new wood.) Here too there is just enough oak to mention but once again it's not really enough to impair the purity of the distinctly cool and ultra-spicy red currant, underbrush, sandalwood, lilac and plenty of earth aromas. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a similar level of minerality that is borderline pungent and it informs the explosively long, firm and very serious finish. This notably powerful, but not really austere effort, displays magnificent potential and if it develops its usual degree of complexity over time it should merit the upper end of my projected range. But as structured and firm as it is, I suspect that this will drink well after only 6 to 8 years of age thanks to the incredible abundance of dry extract. Drink 2037+. VM 97-99 (1/2017): (12.8% natural alcohol chaptalized to 13.2%; Rousseau presented this wine before his Clos de Bèze because he finds the latter wine much more oaky in the early going): Dark, bright red with ruby highlights. Crushed black cherry, raspberry and spice aromas are lifted by a pungent floral topnote--"very ripe for this wine," notes Rousseau. At once utterly young and almost exotic, conveying extraordinary intensity and layered texture to its slightly high-toned flavors of raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, licorice and spices. An element of menthol reserve contributes to the wine's impression of brooding energy. Finishes with noble, seamless tannins and slowly mounting, explosive palate-staining length. Almost painful and almost perfect. Stephen Tanzer. WA 97-99 (12/2016): The 2015 Chambertin Grand Cru took a while to open in the glass, as it is prone towards. It has a very elegant bouquet once again, the fruit an equal mixture of red and black, a touch of cold flint in the background accompanied by blood orange and satsuma that emerge with time. The palate is blessed with beguiling symmetry and power, counterpoised by the killer line of acidity, leading to a mineral-rich finish that goes on forever. This is another Outstanding Chambertin from Rousseau that wine lovers will doubtlessly be fighting over for years to come. And you know what? I wouldn't blame them. |

There is a lovely sense of underlying tension and minerality to the dusty, precise and sleekly muscular flavors that culminate in a notably firm but not especially austere or backward finale. | VM 89-92 (6/2017): The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze shows a lot of new oak today, which masks the fruit. But there is good depth, power and richness. Here, too, the wine gives the impression it needs time to fully come together. The new oak is a bit prominent at this stage, but there is good depth of fruit in the background. I imagine it will be a good few years at least before the Bèze is at its best. (Drink between 2025-2035). Antonio Galloni. |

BH 95-98 (1/2017): (from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn't include the .67 ha parcel planted to chardonnay.) Like the Amoureuses this too is kaleidoscopically spicy with its broad-ranging nose of red cherry, cassis, plum, violet, Asian-style tea, sandalwood and hoisin. The velvety and mouth coating imposingly-scaled and intense mineral-driven flavors are also blessed with seemingly endless reserves of dry extract that coat the palate on the highly seductive finish that delivers fantastically good length on the youthfully austere, backward and immaculately well-balanced finale. This too is going to require a very long snooze in a very cool cellar but it should be a remarkable Musigny when it emerges. Drink 2035+. Don't miss! VM 94-97 (1/2017): Bright ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black raspberry and bitter chocolate are lifted by the most pungent minerality of this range. Combines compelling sweetness and density, but with a finesse of texture that gives this wine an improbably light touch. Remarkably dense but reserved wine, with purple berry liqueur and mineral flavors conveying terrific lift. Easily the best of these 2015s, finishing with a juicy whiplash of flavor. Here the tannins arrive very late and are perfectly integrated with the wine's fruit and soil elements. Still, this vibrant wine is extremely backward and unevolved in the early going and will require long aging. Winemaker François Millet expects to do a very light fining at the bottling. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-97 (12/2016): The 2015 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is initially more introspective compared to the Bonnes-Mares. Predominantly black fruit here with blueberry developing in the glass, there is a slight earthiness in character that shimmies towards floral scents as it opens. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and more salinity than then Bonnes Mares or the Chambolle-Musigny les Amoureuses. It feels crunchy and fresh in the mouth with plenty of blueberry and blackberry towards the long and persistent finish. This is an Outstanding Musigny Vieilles Vignes of substance that will age over 30-40 years. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
