BH 94 (1/2011): A more deeply pitched nose of cool and reserved red and black cherry aromas that are quite fresh and pure and are laced more with warm earth than stone though both are present. The focused and detailed broad-shouldered flavors are blessed with ample dry extract that cuts a bit of the austerity on the linear, serious, mouth coating and hugely long finish. As is often the case, this is still quite primary and will need plenty of time to unwind. Drink: 2023+
VM 93 (4/2011): Deep red. Briary raspberry, blueberry, mocha and menthol on the nose, lifted by peppery spices; a real essence of this grand cru. Then creamier and larger-scaled than the Chambolle premier cru, with the sweet berry fruit flavors enlivened by the peppery component and savory soil tones on the back. | BH 92 (1/2014): A strikingly well-layered nose displays notes of dark berry fruit, flowers, spice and earth scents. There is fine richness to the round and again quite voluminous middle weight plus flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in muscular finish that displays excellent persistence. This is relatively refined in the context of what is typically a robust appellation thanks to the very fine grain of the supporting structure. Drink 2026+. |

BH 94 (1/2017): (from a 2.67 ha parcel situated entirely in terres rouges soil in the south-west portion of the vineyard.) Deep ruby. A completely different aromatic profile is present with its much earthier array of notably fresh red berries and discreet sauvage aromas where a touch of elegance is provided by notes of violet and lilac. There is excellent richness to the muscular and full-bodied flavors that also possess fine mid-palate concentration that coats the mouth and helps to buffer the very firm tannic spine on the seamlessly proportioned finale. This very firmly structured effort is clearly going to require 15 to 20 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2029+.
VM 93+ (3/2017): Good dark red. Musky, soil-driven aromas of dark cherry, sappy pomegranate, wild herbs and brown spices. Densely packed and silky but with excellent definition and energy to its dark berry, menthol, dark chocolate and herb flavors. Much broader than the Chambolle 1er Cru but also less evolved. VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Les Amoureuses, though here there is slightly more red fruit and perhaps a heightened sense of Pinote. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grippy tannin, good backbone (as usual) and a saline influence that becomes more accentuated toward the fresh finish. This feels a little tight-lipped at the moment compared to others tasted from barrel, but it also feels persistent and, for want of a better word, enigmatic. Neal Martin.

A rich mid purple with a deliciously heady bouquet, the sumptuous side of dark raspberry, perfumed yet precise, purple fruit with some redder layers beneath, a little white pepper spice, multiple layers of fruit, very engaging with just a very slight youthful bitterness. Irreproachable.
BH 94 (1/2024): An even spicier and more floral-suffused nose is comprised mostly by blue pinot fruit and discreet earth wisps. The succulent, refined and vibrant medium-bodied flavors aren't especially concentrated though they do possess impressive power on the beautifully long and equally well-balanced finale. This is a wine that is certainly built to repay extended keeping but it's not so compact that it couldn't be reasonably approached after only 5 to 7 years. |

JM 89-91 (11/2022): The fruit comes from a large block of Les Porlottes plus the two 1ers crus, Baudes and Fuées. A fine bright mid purple, noticeably reductive. Very intense red fruit, strict up the front. Strict and lively, all in pure fresh red fruit. Promising. All destemmed. Drink from 2026-2032.
BH 89-91 (1/2023): A perfumed and nicely spicy nose blends notes of red berries, plum and a touch of violet. The sleek, intense and well-detailed middleweight flavors exude a discreet bead of minerality on the refreshing, moderately austere and sufficiently firm finale to warrant up to a decade of keeping. This very pretty effort will likely be approachable after only 5 or so years of keeping. Drink 2029+.
VM 88-90 (1/2023): The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from a large parcel in Porlettes with 10% from Les Fuées and Baudes. This was co-fermented instead of blended at the end of the barrel maturation; that was the modus operandi under François Millet. It is the only cuvée that does not include whole clusters. It has a clean and precise bouquet with dark cherries, hints of iodine and iris flower. The palate is tensile and light, well focused with an understated, open blackberry and raspberry finish, a touch of black pepper on the aftertaste. Fine. Neal Martin. |

JM 93 (11/2023): In bottle since end October. Mostly from Les Porlottes, which is higher and cooler and the last to be picked, plus also the small holdings of 1ers crus Baudes and Fuées. A glowing purple with quite a dark centre. Fully ripe but not unduly heady dark raspberry fruit, with a fine concentration of fruit. Dark notes include bilberries but also an excellent mineral freshness. Fine length, a very fine example.
BH 90 (1/2024): A ripe and attractively fresh nose combines notes of various dark berries and plum with those of violet and soft spice nuances. I very much like the sophisticated texture to the punchy and succulent middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality on the balanced, firm, chalky and lingering finish. Lovely and understated. Drink 2030+. |

BH 94 (5/2008): 94 at its best. I have had this wine many times and it has always been one of my favorite '91s. Unfortunately, a number of bottles tasted within the last 3 years were already on the decline, having lost that wonderful velvety quality that I once so much admired. While not unpleasant, it's clear that these bottles are not what they should be as there is a toastiness that comes up on the finish and renders it ever so slightly bitter. However, a bottle tasted in Los Angeles that was air freighted from the Domaine only 3 weeks prior was simply Outstanding with a wonderful nose of exotic spices and subtle yet seductive game and smoky hints followed by rich, warm and pure flavors of superb depth and length with plenty of finishing velvet. As the note suggests, I have encountered significant bottle variation with scores ranging from 87 to 94. Drink now.

The saturated, dense purple color is magnificent. The big, yet unformed bouquet of framboise, cassis, vanillin, and minerals suggests the wine is loaded. It is. Powerful, rich, concentrated, and marvelously clean and pure, this irrefutably impressively endowed, large-scaled red burgundy exhibits a Medoc-like austerity and structure, as well as a squeaky clean, international style. It will be interesting to see what develops over the next 15-20 years. Do not drink it before the turn of the century; it should last an uncommonly long time for modern day burgundy. BH 94 (5/2008): 94 at its best. I have had this wine many times and it has always been one of my favorite '91s. Unfortunately, a number of bottles tasted within the last 3 years were already on the decline, having lost that wonderful velvety quality that I once so much admired. While not unpleasant, it's clear that these bottles are not what they should be as there is a toastiness that comes up on the finish and renders it ever so slightly bitter. However, a bottle tasted in Los Angeles that was air freighted from the Domaine only 3 weeks prior was simply Outstanding with a wonderful nose of exotic spices and subtle yet seductive game and smoky hints followed by rich, warm and pure flavors of superb depth and length with plenty of finishing velvet. As the note suggests, I have encountered significant bottle variation with scores ranging from 87 to 94. Drink now.

VM 97 (3/2018): (tasted from a 375-milliter bottle): Very bright red with ruby tones; looks like a young wine. Deep, dark red and black fruit aromas are complicated by cinnamon, black pepper, roast coffee and a hint of truffley underbrush. Wonderfully rich but classy and reserved, and not a bit heavy. Utterly silky, plush, energetic wine with a relaxed quality to its lively dark fruit and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes classically dry, with beautifully buffered tannins and captivating building sweetness. Amazingly, this 375-milliliter bottle seems still short of its peak, so I would imagine that well-stored 750s still need time. I'd guess 2022-2042 for 750s. Stephen Tanzer.

BH 93 (10/2005): Extravagant, very ripe spice aromas explode from the glass with remarkable complexity that frame superbly elegant, gorgeously textured flavors that are intense and vibrant. This is really quite powerful for the vintage and incredibly long yet remains classy and fine. It is not especially big or dense as de Vogüe Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. Extremely impressive for the vintage. Drink 2010+.
WA 93 (6/2003): There is an enthralling sappy richness to the floral and blackberry-scented 2000 Musigny. Supremely elegant, it is not quite as dense as the 2001 yet reveals Outstanding depth, purity, and concentration. Lush, stony red and black fruits are interspersed with violets and tangy raspberries in its exceptionally long, expressive, plump character. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2012.
VM 92+ (4/2003): Saturated dark red. Deep, nuanced nose combines dark fruits, minerals and underbrush. Sweet and highly concentrated but tight and backward, even a bit sullen today; fruit and stone flavors are quite primary for the vintage. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and very good grip. May ultimately merit an even higher rating. |

BH 96 (1/2007): This is also very cool and even more reserved at present, revealing only reluctant glimpses of very ripe and ultra spicy red and black berry fruit notes that are very pinot in character. The rich, full and powerful flavors are sweet, supple and utterly classy and the intensity this wine displays is seriously impressive and the superbly long and strikingly precise finish is crystalline in its purity and exactness. There is a rigorous element here that suggests this will require the better part of 15 years to be at its best but when it gets there, this is going to be a thrill ride. Readers know that I am not given to undue hyperbole but I love this style of wine as it's at once pure, understated, graceful and utterly composed. Drink 2019+.
VM 95+ (4/2007): Good deep red. Ineffable aromas of raspberry, crushed stone and flowers. Like liquid silk on entry, then quite tightly wound in the middle, offering great purity and nerve but hiding more than it's showing in the way of flavor today. This has a nearly frightful intensity and superb stony persistence. Due to hail in late August, the yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare, compared to 25 in 2005, according to Millet. A highlight of the vintage. When I asked Millet to compare his 2004s to his 2001s, he told me that the acidity in the spine of the 2004s is barely tasteable, as the minerality of the wine dominates. "In comparison, the 2001s are gaining in sensuality and elegance," he said. "But their fresh fruit flavors are still fighting their acidity." |

BH 99 (1/2008): Prepare to be transported. A positively brilliant nose of violet and rose petal shines against a background of intensely spiced extravagant red and black pinot fruit nuanced by hints of earth and stone and this minerality continues onto the surprisingly supple flavors that convey a remarkable sense of energy and power on the almost unbelievably intense, focused and structured finish that seems to go on and on without end. And the '05 VV has what all truly great burgundies have which is that extra dimension of power without weight as this carries terrific punch and power yet delivers that explosiveness with impeccable class and grace. While I am duly mindful of the many legendary wines this domaine has produced (see the database for all vintages reviewed dating to 1919), the 2005 could very well join the list of the all time greats, there is really that much potential here. Whether it will ultimately transcend the heights achieved by the 1919 or the 1949 (among many others) remains an open question, I have zero doubt that 2005 will be a genuinely great vintage for this wine. Brilliance personified and absolutely a 'wow' wine, in fact, this merits a double 'wow'.
WA 96-98 (4/2007): My notes on the 2005 Musigny Vieilles Vignes represent a composite impression from a selection of barrels. There can be little question that this deep, dark wine displays its class of origin, indeed a class of its own in this year’s collection. Fresh black raspberry, pomegranate, blackberry, and iris dominate the nose and stain the palate. A wealth of spice, mineral, chalky and bitter-sweet floral nuances persistently wreath the fruit at all stages. This shows lovely creaminess of texture in counterpoint to the persistent freshness of fruit. The intensely rich yet refreshing palate saturation and tenacious cling exhibited auger well for extended cellaring yet don’t detract from an impression of utmost elegance and refinement. The domaine will begin bottling the wines in spring and all will, as usual, receive “the minimum, gentlest possible" filtration. Francois Millet notes that skin-to-juice ratios this year were as formidably high as those of 2003, yet thanks to relatively mild temperatures, the fruit retained what he terms a “sorbet-like presentation." |

WA 97 (4/2012): The 2009 Musigny Vieilles Vignes fleshes out beautifully with endless layers of fruit that caress the palate in stunning style. Sweet floral notes meld into expressive dark red fruit in this mysterious, evocative Burgundy. There is a weightless intensity to the Musigny that is achingly gorgeous.
BH 96 (1/2012): A fantastically complex nose offers up aromas of rose petals, violets, mint, cassis, black berry and a plethora of spice nuances that continue onto the intense and remarkably powerful imposingly constructed flavors that are blessed with buckets of dry extract that render the presently rigid tannic spine almost invisible on the impeccably and palate staining finish that seems to persist without end. As was the case from cask, I could still taste this several hours later and if given sufficient cellar time, this should be a very fine vintage for this storied wine. Drink 2029+.
VM 95+ (4/2012): Good bright, deep red. Raspberry liqueur, crushed rock and vanillin oak on the suave, subdued nose; shows the greatest lift of these 2009s. Superconcentrated and creamy but light on its feet, displaying terrific energy and sappiness for 2009. Gained in verve with aeration, with high-pitched, tangy flavors of raspberry, pomegranate, flowers and minerals spreading out to saturate the mouth. With its finishing perfume and taste of limestone, this really transcends the vintage. |

VM 95+ (4/2014): Deep, dark red. An elixir of dark berries on the nose, with complicating notes of crushed stone, menthol and flowers. Thick but weightless and youthfully imploded, with an element of spicy acidity giving Outstanding cut and primary character to the blackberry and blueberry fruit flavors. Finishes dense and strong, with powerful tannic support and late hints of espresso and bitter chocolate. Fully ripe in the context of the vintage, and built for an extended evolution in bottle.
BH 94 (1/2014): A remarkably attractively cool and restrained nose of various red berries, spice and a beautiful array of floral elements complements well the rich and equally cool mineral-tinged big-bodied and overtly muscular flavors. There is a really lovely sense of underlying tension on the clean and pure finish that delivers strikingly good length. This intensely mineral-driven effort is also clean and firm but with slightly better phenolic maturity to the supporting structural elements which should allow this beauty to age successfully for many years to come. Drink 2029+.
WA 92 (8/2013): The 2011 Musigny Vieille Vignes Grand Cru was picked around mid-harvest during the first week of September. It has a more floral bouquet compared to the Bonnes-Mares with scents of dried rose petals and a touch of violet infusing the dark cherry and pomegranate fruit profile. The palate is supple in texture, lithe in the mouth with fine tannins, much more feminine than the Bonnes-Mares (usually I find it the other way round.) The mouth is tingling with salted licorice and white pepper on the aftertaste. Impressive for sure, but I need it to show a bit of soul. Drink 2015-2025. |

VM 94-96 (1/2019): The 2017 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very expressive, complex bouquet, the melange of red, blue and black fruit making it difficult to identify a single dominant color. Blueberry, wild strawberry and black currant intermingle, and hints of sea spray and touches of orange blossom develop with time. The harmonious, silky palate is almost like a Romanee-Saint-Vivant in texture, offering great depth and an energetic, peppery finish that lingers long in the mouth. A divine Musigny that will deserve some bottle age. Neal Martin.

BH 97 (1/2021): A ripe and super-fresh nose offers up notes of black raspberry, plum liqueur, Asian-style tea and a whiff of incense. The racy, intense and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors retain outstanding delineation as well as an abundance of palate soaking dry extract before delivering stunningly good length where an interesting hint of citrus character in the form of mandarin orange appears. This incredibly powerful effort is both classy and highly complex and like the Bonnes Mares, is a wine that will live for decades. With that said, it's not so backward and compact to preclude it being approachable after only 10 to 12 years. A knockout by any standard.
VM 92 (11/2022): The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru is bold and assertive on the nose with darker fruit than Mugnier's Musigny: dense and focused, fine delineation yet just missing the little complexity. The palate is framed by thickset, bold and saturated tannins, a mixture of red and blue fruit, grippy and assertive. There is a heaviness in this Musigny not apparent in three others tasted alongside, a bit burly and demonstrative. But you have to ask, where is the charm. A ripe and expressive nose plays right on the edge of oxidation with its aromas of petrol, floral pear and peach. The round and easy to like middle weight flavors don't possess the distinction that I'm used to seeing or the depth. In sum, I found this to be disappointing given the terroir and generally excellent vintage. I should point out that I have not tasted this before so it's possible that I had a less than pristine bottle though everything appeared to be in appropriate condition. Drubj 2016+. |

BH 95 (6/2024): A ripe yet distinctly cool nose combines notes of citrus confit, spice, Granny Smith apple, white peach and an all but invisible application of wood. The super-sleek but almost painfully intense larger-bodied flavors possess a mouthfeel that is akin to rolling rocks around the mouth on the bone-dry, youthfully austere and compact, indeed very tautly wound, finale that goes on and on. This is terrific and as good a vintage for this wine as I have seen since the 2015 when they began declaring it as Musigny Blanc again. It won't be easy to find but this is one to strongly consider. Drink 2034+.
JM 94-96 (11/2023): Bottled end October. Fine pale lemon colour with a definite green tint. Tense powerful crisp fruit, the crunchy side of orchard fruit, then builds in richness to the back, before rediscovering its minerality to finish. Notably persistent, I can see the point in Musigny Blanc more easily than I used to! |

This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. Like the Bourgogne there is fine volume to the dense, serious and sappy flavors that possess unusually good complexity to the sneaky long finish. BH 91 (4/2021): As it did when I originally reviewed this wine, it has the curious kind of reduction the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom). Otherwise there is good density and richness to the velvet-textured larger-scaled flavors that possess robust power on the moderately austere and slightly drying finale that isn't exactly rustic, but it would be fair to say that it's not especially refined either. It's hard to predict how this wine will ultimately turn out as the nose is a bit of a concern given that it's been in bottle almost 5 years. By contrast I suspect that the dryness currently displayed by the finish will slowly dissipate with age. I would add that this is still quite youthful so there will be ample time for that to occur. (Drink starting 2031).
WA 90 (1/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to blow off a light touch of youthful reduction, revealing aromas of cassis, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with juicy acids, powdery tannins and good length on the finish. The 2016 can't match the depth and amplitude of the 2015 rendition, but it's a very good effort. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2018): ( from a 4 ha parcel; in contrast to the other Beaune 1er, Weber noted that this suffered almost no frost losses and came in at <30 hl/ha.) Here too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. Again, my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will be successfully absorbed over time and note as well that plenty of patience will be necessary. Drink 2031+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024.
BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss!
VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. There is both excellent volume and precision to the delicious, sophisticated and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a taut muscularity before concluding in a gorgeously complex and persistent finish. This is pretty much textbook Les Cailles though one that is also clearly in need of extended cellaring. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding!
VM 92-94 (1/2018): (not much frost here): Healthy dark red-ruby. The nose offers a tight, sappy core of medicinal red cherry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality. Densely packed yet light on its feet, with its black and purple berry flavors complicated and enlivened by saline minerality. VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry and boysenberry. Slightly high-toned, smooth and dense in the mouth, with sweet, sappy, energetic black fruit flavors dominating. The substantial fine-grained tannins arrive late, spreading out to saturate the sides of the tongue. This seriously concentrated wine finishes impressively long and slightly tight. I can't recall ever scoring Chevillon's Pruliers higher from barrel. Stephen Tanzer.
BH 91-94 (1/2018): A restrained and discreetly earthy nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that are set off by a moderate lashing of wood. The broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors possess a sleek muscularity along with excellent power, all wrapped in a rustic, austere and backward finish. As is usually the case, this is the most obviously Nuits in character among the Chevillon wines and like the Perrières, it demands considerable patience but it's virtually always worth the wait. (Drink starting 2031). |

The highly refined, vibrant and beautifully well-delineated flavors exude evident minerality that continues onto the strikingly long and complex finish. This knockout is textbook Petits Monts. (Drink starting 2028).
VM 92+ (1/2018): Bright light-medium red. Lovely aromatic verve to the aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and white pepper. Juicy and firmly built, conveying excellent sneaky intensity to its flavors of red berries, minerals and flowers. Finishes a bit clenched in a positive way but juicy and high-pitched, with a vivacious note of orange zest. This very refined, sharply delineated wine finishes with firm building tannins and lingering salty minerality. VM 95 (7/2022): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin.
WA 92+ (4/2019): Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward bottle age. |

There is by contrast both more volume and more concentration as well to the bold, robust and broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the distinctly firm and austere if slightly drying finish where it's not entirely clear that it will eventually harmonize. BH 92 (7/2023): As it was when last reviewed from bottle (see herein), there is a vague touch of reduction on the still somewhat reluctant nose of ripe black fruit, spice and soft floral nuances. There is both excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined mineral-driven middle weight flavors that display fine length is perhaps not quite as much depth as one might like to see. With that duly noted, this has not yet peaked even if it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed now even though my advice would be to continue to hold for another 5 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2028).
VM 88 (7/2018): The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a very reduced nose with floral scents trying to escape the SO2. The palate is balanced with a sweet core of red fruit, rather sorbet-like with a chewy finish that does not quite articulate the propitious vineyard. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding!
VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+.
VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93 (4/2018): This is the only one of the four wines in the range where the wood regimen could not be described as discreet though even here it is by no means intrusive as the cool and airy aromas of red berries, plum and floral-suffused aromas are easily appreciated. The strikingly refined, intense and chiseled medium-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a highly energetic, focused and youthfully austere finish. Like the Rugiens this is going to require extended keeping to see it at its peak. In a word, excellent. Drink 2028+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. In short, this excellent effort is promising but notably backward. |

VM 95 (10/2019): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very seductive, candied bouquet with pure blueberries and red cherry fruit under a veneer of vanillary new oak that seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, smooth in texture, but you might argue, missing the mineral tension on the finish compared to others. It is a very competent Clos Saint-Jacques albeit not the most memorable. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2024-2046). Neal Martin.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, multidimensional core, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a notably long and expansive finish. While there is considerable upside here for the patient, this will demand significant bottle age. While the 2015 rendition is more flamboyant, the 2016 may well rival it in ultimate quality. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. This is really lovely stuff and a complete knock-out. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically styled, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. Wonderful.
VM 92-94 (1/2018): (38 hectoliters per hectare produced; vinified with 85% whole clusters, down from a normal 100%; aging in 50% new oak, vs. 33% for the premier cru and village wine): Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle. Stephen Tanzer.

An overtly floral suffused nose offers up ripe aromas of red currant, rose petal, plum and a hint of exotic spice. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink 2028+. |

This is quite complex, even if it misses a little joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, quite precise and classy towards the finish that shows impressive integration of oak and substance. There is an engaging brightness to the aromatics here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely structured with a fine line of salinity. The vivid nature of the nose is translated onto the palate. It finishes in tensile and refreshing fashion. This is an excellent Morey with unerring symmetry. Tasted at the Domaine. This too is youthfully awkward at present and note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that, like the Ech, this will harmonize if given at least a few years of bottle age first. | VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998. Stephen Tanzer. |

The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black and red fruit, well judged acidity, clean and crisp with gentle grip on the finish. VM 93+ (1/2020): The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here. (Drink between 2022-2042). Neal Martin.
BH 93 (4/2018): A discreet application of wood sets off pure and airy aromas of essence of red cherry, lavender and violet. There is once again fine mid-palate density to the vibrant, sleek and intense middle weight flavors that aren't quite as stony but even more complex and particularly so on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. This too is a really lovely effort that should amply repay extended keeping. (Drink starting 2028). |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip.
BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
