| BH 90 (1/2007): As one would expect, this is a bigger wine that offers a bit more aromatic complexity with attractive floral aromas of violets, earth and cassis that precede racy, edgy and powerful medium full flavors that are direct, indeed even rather linear on the borderline stern and presently austere finish. This is built to age and a wine that I doubt will be overly approachable young and thus moderate patience will be required. (Drink starting 2013). |

BH 92 (1/2009): (50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the '50s; the vines are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches but there is a slight majority in the latter.) Here the nose actually quite resembles that of the Fuees though the fruit spectrum is slightly more deeply pitched and runs slightly more toward the bluer end with just the barest trace of herbal while sliding gracefully into powerful and impressively broad-scaled flavors that are rich, full, sweet and textured, underpinned by ample minerality on the focused, detailed and solidly long finish. Mugnier agreed with me that this vineyard appears to be hitting its stride as of late and while not quite as good as he would like to see, certainly better than it was only a few years ago. Drink 2016+. WA 93-94 (12/2009): Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Bonnes Mares – which I was unable to re-taste after bottling – smells strikingly of boysenberry and blueberry, accompanied by bittersweet, high-toned herbal concentrates, black tea, crushed stone, and peat. In the mouth this is velvety yet displays invigoration of tart fruit skin, cardamom, white pepper, and mineral impingement, as well as uncanny lift, and its pure blue fruits are transparent to myriad finishing nuances. This shares with the corresponding 2005 its density, dark mystery, and stony mineral depth, but practically crackles with static electric energy and boasts mysteriously levitational length. I see no reason to defer the pleasure of its company, but at the same time this impeccably balanced and refined version of its cru should be worth following for at least 12-15 years. VM 93 (3/2009): (from a blend of 60% white and 40% red soil, says Mugnier) Bright, medium red. Perfumed nose of blueberry, mocha and crushed stone. Plush on entry, then wonderfully fresh in the middle and less plump than the Fuees, with terrific stony verve and mineral intensity to the crushed black fruit flavors. Very broad on the back end. This will rely more on its serious tannins than on its acids for longevity-and it will require at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring. |

| BH 90 (1/2010): Here the nose offers a clear step up in aromatic elegance as well as complexity with relatively high-toned red pinot fruit, stone, underbrush and warm earth notes merging into rich and exceptionally fresh medium full flavors that are quite forward, indeed even supple and tender, that also culminate in a focused, energetic and lingering finish where, like the Fuées there is a very subtle edginess. An understated Bonnes Mares that is built more along the lines of finesse than power and muscle. Drink 2014+. |

VM 93 (4/2007): Medium red. Lovely perfumed nose offers raspberry, rose petal and minerals as well as hints of darker black cherry and blueberry. A distinct step up in density from the foregoing 2004s; silky, scented and almost lush for the year. Compellingly perfumed and vibrant wine. Finishes broad and long, with strikingly sweet tannins and lovely lingering perfume. BH 92 (1/2007): A strikingly seductive nose of spice, hoisin and anise that adds nuance to the largely black pinot fruit aromas and continue onto the sappy, rich and mouth coating middle weight flavors that possess a bit more mid-palate fat and an explosive, fresh and harmonious finish. I particularly like the transparency here and this is an exceptionally stylish effort that will age gracefully but could actually be approached now with pleasure. Drink 2012+. Outstanding! |

| BH 94 (1/2015): (from old vines of an indeterminate age.) A markedly ripe yet fresh and cool nose offers up a beguiling array of spice, floral and stone elements that confer serious depth onto the red, blue and black pinot fruit aromas. The mouth feel of the medium-bodied flavors is also silky and mineral-driven and the palpable sense of refinement is enhanced by the super fine-grained tannins on the hugely long, firm and beautifully balanced finale. This stunningly good effort should drink well after only 6 to 8 years though it will need fully 12 to 15 to fully peak. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

BH 90 (1/2005): ( from 50 year old vines - this is Mugnier's favorite vineyard in terms of its fruit quality). There is more of everything here with much deeper and more expressive aromas of black cherry fruit nuanced by really impressive complexity and depth followed by richer, sweeter, sappier flavors that offer excellent length. A very fine effort with solid balance and one that should age extremely well. Drink 2010+. Outstanding! VM 90 (4/2005): Palish color. Aromas of raspberry, smoke, brown spices and menthol. Silky for the vintage, and deeper than the village wine, with strawberry syrup and brown spice flavors supported by underlying stoniness. Clearly longer on the aftertaste. WA 89-91 (6/2004): Powerful floral elements perfume the red berry aromas of the 2002 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Sensual, medium-bodied, and silky-textured, it gracefully dances across the palate releasing elegant red fruit flavors. This feminine wine would a delight to drink right from the barrel. Projected maturity: now-2012. |

WA 92 (12/2009): Peat, black tea, game, mint, crushed stone, and dark berry aromas rise in at once sinister and enticing profusion from the glass of Mugnier's 2006 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuees. Corresponding low-toned complexity characterizes the opulently-textured and caressing, bittersweet palate. Stony minerality proves the most tenaciously aspect of this dark beauty's long, soothing, yet almost brooding finish. It sent chills back up my spine just transcribing my tasting note and recreating this wine's uncanny, hard-to-describe character. I suspect it will be worth following for ten or a dozen years, probably longer. The track record at this address is more than merely convincing. VM 92 (4/2009): Bright, dark red. Fresh, complex nose melds musky raspberry, smoky minerality, brown spices, mocha and underbrush. Lush and fat with fruit; in fact, this is amazingly opulent for 2006 but almost magically weightless. Finishes very long, sweet and perfumed, with substantial fine tannins and notes of game and spice. Very impressive. BH 92 (1/2009): (from 50+ year old vines - this is Mugnier's favorite vineyard in terms of its fruit quality) This too is notably ripe yet airy with a mix of dark pinot fruit and violets that merge into fresh, racy and more mineral-infused medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced, sweet and impressively deep finish sporting plenty of energy. This too is very Chambolle, light on its feet with fine tannins and beautiful transparency. Recommended. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! |

| BH 90 (7/2015): A cool, restrained and admirably pure nose is composed of various red berry fruit, spice, floral and Asian-style tea scents. The highly refined and punchy middle weight flavors possess a lovely sense of minerality before delivering fine length on the slightly lean, dusty and austere finale. This elegant effort is coming along very nicely and it has reached a stage that could certainly be enjoyed now but for my taste I would allow this another 4 to 6 years first in order to develop a bit more depth as well as broadening the finale. Try from 2019+. |

JM 95 (9/2017): Pale colour but very elegant whole bunch nose. Alpine strawberries, rose petals. Very perfumed, on the edge of pommadé. Undeniably pretty though. With air this gains in substance and loses the pot pourrri character. Lovely lingering finish. BH 93 (1/2017): Here the expressive nose is both elegant and complex with its combination of pomegranate, red cherry, spice and lavender. The refined, intense and precise medium-bodied flavors exhibit even more minerality on the delicious and inviting finish that is shaped by remarkably fine-grained tannins. Textbook Fuées. BH 90-92 (1/2023): A spicier array of plum, black pinot fruit and violet serves as a fresh and elegant introduction to the gorgeously textured, sappy and denser medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate volume, all wrapped in a clean, dry and herbal tea and mineral-inflected finale. Lovely and decidedly understated in style. VM 91-93 (1/2023): The 2021 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has a very attractive, quite intellectual nose with lively red fruit, crushed rocks, orange blossom and subtle tobacco scents. This has wonderful delineation. The palate is smooth and cohesive, with orange rind and Seville orange marmalade infusing the red fruit. An underlying note of white pepper and cracked black pepper lends spiciness to the finish. What a lovely, sprightly ingenue of a Les Fuées. Neal Martin. WA 92-94 (1/2023): Pure and precise, the 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées offers up aromas of sweet red berries, peonies, vine smoke, spices and orange rind, followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless palate defined by cool fruit tones and melting tannins. Concluding with a long, mineral finish, this is a weightless, elegant Fuées from Mugnier. |

VM 96+ (3/2009): Deep red with ruby tones. Flamboyantly ripe aromas of black fruits, blood orange, peony and espresso. Huge yet weightless, saturating every square millimeter of the mouth with very ripe dark fruits, minerals and spices. This plush, sweet, extremely unevolved wine is almost monolithic today but the explosive, palate-staining finish suggests that it has a slow and glorious evolution ahead of it. The fruit here was picked with potential alcohol of 13.7%, the same as in 2005. Stephen Tanzer. WA 95-96 (12/2009): Cassis, blackberry, licorice, vanilla, smoky black tea, and lily perfume wafting from the glass of Chateau de Chambolle's 2006 Musigny seduce the senses. The sheer sappy, palate-staining bittersweet fruit concentration here is remarkable, with the wine's strong undertone of wet stone seemingly acting as a sounding board. This displays an uncanny combination of sheer density with reverberative, vibrant energy and buoyancy that are consistent with the best wines of this vintage, but that this wine displayed to a considerable extent in 2005, too. This is one to cherish for the next 15-20 years. BH 95 (1/2009): A gorgeously elegant and kaleidoscopic nose of high-toned red and black berry fruit aromas liberally laced with natural spices that offer impressive nuance and notable complexity introduces supple, finely detailed and beautifully textured flavors wrapped in a dusty, mineral-infused finish. This dances on the palate yet it is forceful with excellent finishing drive and intensity on the explosive and hugely long, slightly austere finale. This is one of those 'wow' wines as well as one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2018+. |

| VM 93 (3/2010): Bright, deep red. Knockout aromas and flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, crushed stone and smoky minerality. Wonderfully deep, tangy and sweet, with a captivating creamy texture making this deceptively tastable today. Impressive today for its volume, and finishes very long, broad and classically dry, with substantial fine-grained tannins. As delicious as this is right now, its overall balance suggests it will reward a decade of aging. For his part, Mugnier says that virtually every vintage of his Musigny needs ten years in the bottle. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 93 (1/2022): This is aromatically quite discreet with its subtly perfumed nose that is composed of plum, dark cherry, violet, lavender and orange pekoe tea plus the first hints of secondary development. This is at once silky but powerful with plenty of minerality characterizing the velvet-textured big-bodied flavors that coat the mouth with dry extract that also serves to buffer the markedly firm tannic spine on the balanced and hugely long but presently compact finish. This classy and very stylish effort is still sufficiently backward to need close to another decade in a cool cellar though with that said, it's not so tightly wound as to be completely impenetrable if decanted for an hour first. I would add that I will want to see how the fruit evolves relative to the structure because based on this bottle, the nose is a bit more evolved. Drink starting 2029. VM 96.5 (3/2017): Bright medium red More expressive on the nose today than the Amoureuses, offering ineffable scents of black raspberry, lavender and flinty, smoky minerality By far the plushest and deepest of these 2014s but still with outstanding definition and verve This wonderfully fine-grained, classically dry Musigny boasts bulletproof fruit and finishes with impressive medicinal reserve Beginning with the 2013 Musigny, Mugnier will be delaying the release of his top bottling for a minimum of two years--and possibly several years more than that--as he finds this wine especially hard to read in its extreme youth. Drink between 2026-2040. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 89 (3/2008): This reflects the elegance that can be found in Premeaux and the Mugnier touch only adds to this with a nicely complex and aromatically expressive nose that offers detailed and pure aromas of earth, black fruit and plum that dissolve into beautifully complex, refined and balanced flavors that also display ample finishing minerality and better overall phenolic ripeness. A really lovely effort that should age effortlessly and while this presently has a touch of forest floor on the nose, I suspect that it will pass in time. Try from 2012+. VM 88 (4/2007): Good full red. Ripe aromas of blackberry and black cherry. Juicy and aromatic in the mouth, with more obvious ripeness and texture than the young-vines Clos des Fourches. The perfumed cherry flavor carries through to the floral finish, which features dusty tannins but avoids the dryness of the Clos des Fourches. As with the 2005 version, this strikes me as Nuits in a Chambolle style. |

WA 90 (6/2010): Mugnier’s 2007 Nuits-St.-Georges Clos de la Marechale elicits aromatic allusions to ripe black raspberry, cedar, cardamom, burley tobacco, nut oils, and game, delivering a similar sense of complexity on a relatively rich if conspicuously tannin-girded palate. The sheer sap and finishing grip in evidence here suggest that one might want to follow the wine for 4-6 years in anticipation that the tannins will refine themselves. VM 90 (4/2010): Good deep red. Blueberry, licorice, brown spices and menthol on the complex nose. Richer and broader than the village wine, with more intense and complex flavors of spicy black and red berries, leather and minerals. Finishes dense, broad and spicy, with substantial fine tannins. An excellent Nuits-Saint-George wine. BH 89 (6/2010): An expressive nose of green apple, white flower and lemon zest aromas trimmed in a deft touch of wood merges into rich, clean and beautifully detailed middle weight flavors that possess a fine sense of underlying tension and punch on the layered and very dry finish that lingers nicely. Lovely and balanced. Drink: 2012+ |

WA 92 (5/2011): The 2008 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale offers up black cherries, sweet spices, flowers and licorice, all of which meld together beautifully in a weightless, impeccably elegant style. Floral, minty notes add complexity and nuance on the refined finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. VM 90 (4/2011): Good medium red. Ripe, aromatic nose of dark berries, licorice and flowers, complicated by musky leather and earth nuances. Much sweeter and richer, not to mention refined, than the Clos des Fourches, which is made mostly from younger vines in the Clos. Spice and pepper notes contribute to this wine's juiciness, and a whiff of blood orange adds lift. Finishes long and firm but not dry. Youthfully tight but sexy wine. BH 90 (1/2011): A distinctly earthy and anise-infused mix of sour cherry and blue berry fruit that displays whiffs of crushed herbs and pepper merges into detailed, pure and almost delicate middle weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel and fine length. I should point out though that while there is no rusticity present, the very firm tannins are not as refined as those of the Fuees. Drink 2016+. |

BH 92 (6/2012): I clearly misjudged this because while this is slightly riper than its 2010 counterpart with its mildly exotic yellow fruit aromas of honey, straw, peach and mango, there is genuinely excellent depth to the textured and opulent middle weight flavors that really coat the palate with dry extract. But it's the impressive length that really sets this apart from the 2010 because while this is a powerful vintage for the Clos de la Marechale, it is the moderately firm acid spine that shapes the finish and imparts a real sense of focus. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! WA 92 (4/2012): The 2009 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale shows the more virile side of Pinot. Black cherries smoke, tar and licorice all come to life in this intense, broad-shouldered wine. Layers of fruit build to the muscular, virile finish. The wine’s masculine personality is quite a contrast to the seductiveness of Mugnier’s other 2009s. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. VM 89-92 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby. Blackberry liqueur, minerals and crushed stone on the nose, along with an earthy nuance. Large-scaled, lush and sweet, with a creamy, chocolatey flavor saturating the palate. This big, slightly rough wine benefits from its substantial tannins, which help to balance the sweetness of the alcohol. The pHs of these grapes was the highest to date, noted Mugnier, but as there was so little malic acidity, the post-ML pH is now just a bit higher than average. Mugnier told me there would probably be no Clos des Forches bottling, as he needed to include some of the less-ripe juice in the Clos de la Marechale. (Incidentally, the very promising 2009 Marechale blanc, which had been racked into stainless steel tank in September and will be bottled in January, was dry, powerful, complex and gripping, with excellent energy and acidity for the vintage.) |

VM 92+ (3/2013): Very deep, bright red. Sappy black cherry, raspberry, cola and licorice on the nose, plus a whiff of animal fur. Big, deep and chocolatey, with serious depth of black cherry and dark berry fruit. The big Nuits-Saint-Georges tannins are sexed up by high-toned oak spices on the impressively long finish. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier punches down the cap late in the fermentation, when the juice is almost dry and the skins have softened, an approach that he believes results in a steadier uptake of sugar in his wines. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91 (6/2013): An all but invisible touch of wood sets off pretty and cool aromas of citrus rind, dried floral nuances and a hint of minerality. There is good richness and plenty of verve to the well-detailed middle weight flavors that possess a sappy mouth feel on the mouth coating and bone dry finish. This is really quite good and while not a wine of particular refinement, there is excellent character and persistence. I like this as it's refreshing, well-balanced and has plenty of depth to it. Worth considering. Drink from 2015+. Outstanding! |

VM 91 (3/2016): Bright, dark red. Highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, black raspberry, minerals and spices. Sappy and fine-grained; very dry and concentrated, conveying a strong impression of inner-palate energy. Sexy cherry and crushed stone flavors are framed by suave tannins on the very long, aromatic back end. Showing more eclat than it did from barrel a year ago, this wine has turned out very well. Drink 2019-2028. Stephen Tanzer. WA 91 (11/2016): Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale has a more sophisticated and nuanced nose compared to its peers, red and black fruit here and well integrated oak. The palate is smooth in the mouth, supple and quite plush, clearly with some quality new oak that is almost Cathiard-like in style (something that appears to have evolved in the last few months). However, there is fruit to support that here. Give this 2-3 years in bottle and it should turn into a very decent Nuits Saint-Georges. BH 89 (1/2016): This is admirably pure and relatively high-toned despite the presence of ample earth influence on the bright mix of red raspberry and cherry scents. There is good volume to the beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors that display a sleek muscularity before terminating in a firm, mouth coating and well-balance if mildly austere finale. This should improve for up to a decade. Drink 2021+. |

| BH 91 (1/2017): A perfumed and once again cool and airy nose displays notes of red currant, cherry and warm earth. There is excellent intensity to the energetic middle weight flavors that possess good precision on the firm and dusty but not really rustic finish that delivers excellent persistence. This balanced effort is a bit more structured than it typically is and will definitely require a few years before it will be approachable. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

| BH 91 (1/2020): A markedly earthy nose features notes of various dark berries and hints of game and similar green tea nuances. There is both good detail and a lovely underlying tension to the middle weight flavors that are not quite as refined but offer a bit more complexity on the lingering finish where the intensity and power really build from the mid-palate. This delicious effort should amply repay mid-term cellaring. (Drink starting 2027) |

| VM 93-95 (1/2018): Very dark ruby-red. Pure, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, violet and crushed rock. A step up in sucrosité and pliancy, offering an almost voluptuous texture to its dense flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, minerals and violet. Verging on chocolatey in its ripeness but holds its shape nicely. Finishes with extremely fine tannins, a slight medicinal reserve, strong saline minerality and superb length. Carrying the highest pH among these 2016s, this beauty conveys a wonderfully relaxed impression without any obvious signs of overripeness. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to regisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin. BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. | VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. BH 91 (4/2021): As it did when I originally reviewed this wine, it has the curious kind of reduction the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom). Otherwise there is good density and richness to the velvet-textured larger-scaled flavors that possess robust power on the moderately austere and slightly drying finale that isn't exactly rustic, but it would be fair to say that it's not especially refined either. It's hard to predict how this wine will ultimately turn out as the nose is a bit of a concern given that it's been in bottle almost 5 years. By contrast I suspect that the dryness currently displayed by the finish will slowly dissipate with age. I would add that this is still quite youthful so there will be ample time for that to occur. (Drink starting 2031). WA 90 (1/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to blow off a light touch of youthful reduction, revealing aromas of cassis, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with juicy acids, powdery tannins and good length on the finish. The 2016 can't match the depth and amplitude of the 2015 rendition, but it's a very good effort. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2018): ( from a 4 ha parcel; in contrast to the other Beaune 1er, Weber noted that this suffered almost no frost losses and came in at <30 hl/ha.) Here too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. Again, my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will be successfully absorbed over time and note as well that plenty of patience will be necessary. Drink 2031+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024. BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. An extremely promising vintage for this wine. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-95 (4/2018): Here the oak/menthol influence on the spicy aromas of plum, cassis and soft earth is more moderate though it's still far from subtle. There is both excellent volume and precision to the delicious, sophisticated and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a taut muscularity before concluding in a gorgeously complex and persistent finish. This is pretty much textbook Les Cailles though one that is also clearly in need of extended cellaring. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2018): (not much frost here): Healthy dark red-ruby. The nose offers a tight, sappy core of medicinal red cherry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality. Densely packed yet light on its feet, with its black and purple berry flavors complicated and enlivened by saline minerality. Finishes energetic and very long, with lingering salinity, the firm tannins arriving late. Superb potential from this top site. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (4/2018): More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Unlike the Grèves however, this excellent effort should be reasonably approachable after 5 to 7 years. Drink 2031+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2018): (from a very good yield of 40 hectoliters per hectare, as this vineyard, which Weber told me "usually gets hit by something or other," was not affected by frost in 2016): Good dark red. Alluring, mellow aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and minerals, plus a suggestion of toffee. Round, silky and plush, offering mouthfilling voluptuousness without losing its shape. The compellingly round, sweet finish shows a fine dusting of tannins and superb length. Absolutely no sign of vine stress here! Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry and boysenberry. Slightly high-toned, smooth and dense in the mouth, with sweet, sappy, energetic black fruit flavors dominating. The substantial fine-grained tannins arrive late, spreading out to saturate the sides of the tongue. This seriously concentrated wine finishes impressively long and slightly tight. I can't recall ever scoring Chevillon's Pruliers higher from barrel. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A restrained and discreetly earthy nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that are set off by a moderate lashing of wood. The broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors possess a sleek muscularity along with excellent power, all wrapped in a rustic, austere and backward finish. As is usually the case, this is the most obviously Nuits in character among the Chevillon wines and like the Perrières, it demands considerable patience but it's virtually always worth the wait. | BH 90-93 (4/2018): A more deeply pitched array is composed mostly of plum liqueur, dark cherry and notably more earth influence. | BH 92 (4/2018): (from a .80 ha parcel in the climat of Sur les Grèves.) Here the nose plays on the edge of reduction and while it doesn't completely mask the floral-scented nose of dark berries and earth, it does render it less expressive. The rich and notably denser medium-bodied flavors also flash a lovely minerality that adds a sense of lift to the much firmer, even robust finish that is presently somewhat youthfully austere. Patience required but this should ultimately be excellent. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

BH 94 (4/2018): An ultra-spicy and floral-suffused nose speaks of violet, rose petal, lavender, tea and a broad range of dark berry aromas. The highly refined, vibrant and beautifully well-delineated flavors exude evident minerality that continues onto the strikingly long and complex finish. This knockout is textbook Petits Monts. (Drink starting 2028). VM 92+ (1/2018): Bright light-medium red. Lovely aromatic verve to the aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and white pepper. Juicy and firmly built, conveying excellent sneaky intensity to its flavors of red berries, minerals and flowers. Finishes a bit clenched in a positive way but juicy and high-pitched, with a vivacious note of orange zest. This very refined, sharply delineated wine finishes with firm building tannins and lingering salty minerality. I suspect that seven or eight years of aging will bring a more supple texture and an even higher score. (Drink between 2025-2036). Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95 (7/2022): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin. WA 92+ (4/2019): Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward bottle age. |

| VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 89-91 (1/2018): A slightly more elegant nose is composed mostly by notes from the red side of the fruit spectrum along with evident floral elements. While there is certainly good density this is more 'Chambollesque' than the old vines cuvée with a finer mouthfeel to the middle weight flavors that offer fine length on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. Lovely. Drink 2022+. |

| BH 91 (1/2019): This is actually aromatically similar to the Echézeaux at present with its mildly reductive nose that is slightly earthier and not quite as spicy. There is by contrast both more volume and more concentration as well to the bold, robust and broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the distinctly firm and austere if slightly drying finish where it's not entirely clear that it will eventually harmonize. A question mark. (Drink starting 2031). |

BH 92 (1/2019): Here too there is a touch of reduction that pushes the notes of red currant, cherry, violet and spice elements to the background. There is though good freshness to richer and even more full-bodied flavors that possess outstanding concentration thanks to the abundance of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the slightly less structured finale that also offers fine length and solid depth. As pretty as this is though, it can't match the evident class of the Gaudichots good as it is. (Drink starting 2028). VM 89 (7/2018): The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a floral bouquet, quite earthy in style but well defined. The palate has a structured, rather backward opening with grainy tannin and a savory, meaty finish that suggests this will be best enjoyed in its youth. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (7/2023): As it was when last reviewed from bottle (see herein), there is a vague touch of reduction on the still somewhat reluctant nose of ripe black fruit, spice and soft floral nuances. There is both excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined mineral-driven middle weight flavors that display fine length is perhaps not quite as much depth as one might like to see. With that duly noted, this has not yet peaked even if it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed now even though my advice would be to continue to hold for another 5 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2028). VM 88 (7/2018): The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a very reduced nose with floral scents trying to escape the SO2. The palate is balanced with a sweet core of red fruit, rather sorbet-like with a chewy finish that does not quite articulate the propitious vineyard. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

| BH 87-89 (1/2018): A pungent nose is comprised by notes of wood, menthol, various red berries and plenty of Vosne-style spice. I like the delineation of the vibrant medium weight flavors that terminate in a dusty and mildly austere finish. This will need a few years to better integrate its wood and develop additional depth. (Drink starting 2022). |

| BH 91-93 (1/2018): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. The rich, delicious and caressing medium weight plus flavors possess a velvety mid-palate mouthfeel that contrasts somewhat with the very firm, saline and lingering finish. This is muscular but not really rustic. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! |

BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+. VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93 (4/2018): This is the only one of the four wines in the range where the wood regimen could not be described as discreet though even here it is by no means intrusive as the cool and airy aromas of red berries, plum and floral-suffused aromas are easily appreciated. The strikingly refined, intense and chiseled medium-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a highly energetic, focused and youthfully austere finish. Like the Rugiens this is going to require extended keeping to see it at its peak. In a word, excellent. Drink 2028+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 93 (1/2019): A brooding and all but mute nose requires aggressive swirling to reveal its notes of intensely earthy aromas of dark currant and raspberry where a background nuance of the sauvage appears. The rich, full-bodied, naturally sweet and lightly mineral-suffused flavors possess good freshness and a seductive texture before culminating in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish. This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. In short, this excellent effort is promising but notably backward. |

BH 92-94 (4/2018): A broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of earth, spice, plum, dark cherry, violet and more moderate though hardly subtle wood. The rich, round and impressively-scaled flavors possess fine density and evident power that carries over to the sappy and palate coating finish that is admirably persistent. This isn't quite as complex as the Bèze but there is excellent underlying material such that this should ultimately transform into an excellent CdlR. (Drink starting 2034). WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. |

VM 95 (10/2019): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very seductive, candied bouquet with pure blueberries and red cherry fruit under a veneer of vanillary new oak that seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, smooth in texture, but you might argue, missing the mineral tension on the finish compared to others. It is a very competent Clos Saint-Jacques albeit not the most memorable. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2024-2046). Neal Martin. WA 94 (4/2019): Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the most reticent wines in the Jadot portfolio this year, reluctantly unfurling in the glass with notes of red berries, rose petals, forest floor and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, multidimensional core, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a notably long and expansive finish. While there is considerable upside here for the patient, this will demand significant bottle age. While the 2015 rendition is more flamboyant, the 2016 may well rival it in ultimate quality. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. This is really lovely stuff and a complete knock-out. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru includes 85% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It was picked around 24 to 29 September. It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically styled, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. Wonderful. VM 92-94 (1/2018): (38 hectoliters per hectare produced; vinified with 85% whole clusters, down from a normal 100%; aging in 50% new oak, vs. 33% for the premier cru and village wine): Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-93 (1/2018): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine ages - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 85% whole cluster and 50% new wood.) An overtly floral suffused nose offers up ripe aromas of red currant, rose petal, plum and a hint of exotic spice. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink 2028+. |

| VM 92 (10/2019): The 2016 Corton-Grancey Grand Cru is deeper in colour than its peers with blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of mulch-like undergrowth and wilted violets. This is quite complex, even if it misses a little joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, quite precise and classy towards the finish that shows impressive integration of oak and substance. This is a well crafted, very typical Corton that should age with style. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2022-2036). Neal Martin. |

| VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has a well defined and quite complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and briary aromas, very focused and harmonious and the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well judged acidity, very harmonious with a gentle, blackberry and mulberry-tinged finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin. |

| VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Veilles Vignes 1er Cru, comprising one-third whole bunch fruit, has a perfumed and floral bouquet with copious raspberry, briary and cold stone aromas. There is an engaging brightness to the aromatics here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely structured with a fine line of salinity. The vivid nature of the nose is translated onto the palate. It finishes in tensile and refreshing fashion. This is an excellent Morey with unerring symmetry. Tasted at the Domaine. (Drink between 2024-2040.) Neal Martin. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2018): Here the wood treatment is no longer subtle and it completely dominates the underlying spice and fruit scents. On the plus side there is excellent concentration to the rich and full-bodied flavors that possess evident power and muscularity while delivering excellent length on the slightly warm finish where the wood sweetens it. This too is youthfully awkward at present and note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that, like the Ech, this will harmonize if given at least a few years of bottle age first. (Drink starting 2028). |

| BH 90-92 (4/2018): Today there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Taillepieds with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that flashes a hint of dryness though I doubt that it will last. | BH 92-95 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) Much more moderate, though hardly invisible, oak influence can be found on the notably ripe aromas of cassis, black cherry, plum and a panoply of spice and earth elements. The detailed, powerful and punchy imposingly-scaled flavors possess first-rate mid-palate density as the sappy dry extract coats the mouth on the very firmly structured finish that flashes both better depth and persistence. Excellent quality though note well that this is very serious and will need extended aging. Drink 2033+. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is comparatively deep in colour. The bouquet is surfeit with red berry fruit, briary and crushed stone aromas, all well defined and beautifully assimilated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black and red fruit, well judged acidity, clean and crisp with gentle grip on the finish. This is a superb Corton that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 30 closure) (Drink between 2021-2045). Neal Martin. BH 93 (1/2019): An equally deft application of wood is present on the reticent aromas of plum, black cherry, earth and a whiff of the sauvage that with aggressive swirling have no trouble being appreciated. I very much like the sleek, even polished mouthfeel of the bigger, richer and more powerful broad-shouldered flavors that display excellent persistence on the palate coating, dusty and beautifully long finale where hints of bitter cherry pit and oak can be found. This is very firmly structured and will need at least a few years of bottle age first but in time it should be excellent. (Drink starting 2031). |

| VM 95 (8/2020): The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is consistent with previous notes. It is blessed with an irresistible bouquet that showcases Romain Taupenot's ability to conjure crystalline fruit from this vineyard. Medium-bodied on the palate, not inherently powerful, yet equipped with such a saline, complex finish that you cannot help but immediately return for another sip. This is superb. Neal Martin. |

| BH 93 (4/2018): Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Frémiets save for the fact that it is notably spicier. There is a beguiling inner mouth perfume to the super-sleek, delineated and mineral-driven flavors that possess even better depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and harmonious finish. This is very classy and should drink well young and with extended aging. (Drink starting 2028). |

VM 93+ (1/2020): The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here. (Drink between 2022-2042). Neal Martin. BH 93 (4/2018): A discreet application of wood sets off pure and airy aromas of essence of red cherry, lavender and violet. There is once again fine mid-palate density to the vibrant, sleek and intense middle weight flavors that aren't quite as stony but even more complex and particularly so on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. This too is a really lovely effort that should amply repay extended keeping. (Drink starting 2028). |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
