VM 92+ (4/2007): Medium red-ruby color. Sappy, nuanced nose combines red cherry, fresh herbs and minerals. Wonderfully vibrant in the mouth, with sappy, sweet cherry and mineral flavors lifted by a note of cinnamon. This really coats the mouth with dusty extract. Conveys an impression of very even ripening. Finishes with suave tannins and noteworthy energy. This strikes me as very Chambolle in style. This is more harmonious today than the Clos la Roche but will be even better with seven or eight years in the bottle. BH 92 (1/2007): A more deeply pitched nose of dark and blue berry fruits laced with earth and a lovely and distinct violet note that is followed by very rich, dense and serious flavors that finish with noticeable austerity. As it usually is, this is a powerful wine that possesses huge length and is sufficiently well structured that it will require the better part of a decade to really open up and reveal its full, and considerable, potential. The best of these '04s. Drink 2014+. |

BH 93 (1/2010): A very high-toned, airy and layered nose of red berry fruit and distinct floral notes, particularly dried red and white rose petal with a touch of lavender, slides gracefully into pure, intense, rich, full and focused middle weight flavors that possess excellent power and punch with ample minerality on the wonderfully long and moderately austere finish. This is an Outstanding effort in the context of the vintage. Drink 2019+. VM 91-94 (4/2009): Bright, deep red. Aromas of raspberry liqueur, blueberry, menthol and musky herbs. Rich, chewy and dry; comes across as quite austere after the last couple of grand crus. But then Jeremy Seysses finds this quality to be reassuring in the context of 2007. "I'm drawn to austerity in this vintage," he told me, adding that he plans to lay down magnums of this wine in his personal cellar, along with the Clos de la Roche and Echezeaux. Finishes with dusty tannins and excellent thrust. |

| BH 92 (1/2020): An exceptionally pretty and, similar to the Malconsorts, somewhat sweet nose combines notes of lavender, rose petal, violet, red currant and a whiff of orange pekoe tea. There is good if not special mid-palate density to the overtly intense flavors that terminate in a dusty, austere and reasonably powerful finish where the tannins are a bit spiky. My sense is though that with a few years of age they will round off and render the finish more harmonious. Drink 2029+. |

| BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from 50+ year old vines.) A very Chambolle nose of high-toned raspberry and cherry aromas complements well the sweet, round and seductively textured flavors that possess excellent mid-palate concentration and Outstanding depth on the punchy and palate staining finish. There is ample dry extract here and this should age very well as it's both balanced and blessed with impressive raw materials. Drink 2014+. Outstanding! |

VM 90+ (3/2009): Bright, dark red. Black cherry, smoked meat, mocha and underbrush on the soil-inflected nose. Lush, broad and sweet, with noteworthy complexity of flavor. A substantial wine that finishes with serious tannins. Needs at least five to seven years of patience. WA 91 (12/2009): The tender, ripe cherry fruit; marrowy, clean meatiness; and subtle creaminess of its immediate palate impact mark the Dujac 2006 Charmes-Chambertin as a contrast with the corresponding Combettes. Vanilla and licorice add allure. This lives up to its name until a point where some faintly drying tannin creeps into its finish. That said, it should prove memorably perfumed and delicious in the proper contexts over the next 4-5 years. BH 90-93 (1/2008): (from both Charmes proper and Mazoyères). This is shut down tight with thick reduction blocking any reasonable evaluation of the nose though the relatively big and weighty flavors are concentrated, serious and solidly structured. This seems quite promising as the underlying material is impressive but note that this will not be a precocious example of Charmes. Drink 2016+. |

Clos de la Roche Grand Cru |

| |
BH 93 (10/2001): This is a wine that I have enjoyed many times and it is one of those rare grands crus that has shown magnificently from day one and has never missed a beat since. Earthy yet exquisitely complex nose showing more than a trace of secondary aromas. The flavor profile is deep and broad with sap, wet earth, iron, minerals and a pure, intense, terrifically long finish. An Outstanding Clos de la Roche that is enjoyable now though it will continue to hold for many years. Drink 2001-2012. WA 89 (8/1995): The light to medium ruby-colored Clos de la Roche offers an earthy, mineral, and sweet berry fruit-scented nose. What follows is a wine of moderate constitution, undeniable elegance, and graceful Pinot fruit. Some hard tannin is noticeable in the finish, but it is not cause for concern. This wine should age gracefully for a decade or more, offering complex aromatics, and sweet, gamey Pinot fruit in a medium-bodied format. |

WA 96 (6/2007): The Seysses’ 2005 Clos de la Roche charts new territory in this collection for sheer intensity. Black cherry, kirsch distillate, cedar, incense, iron filings, wet stone, and roasted meats and coffee represent a few of the immediate aromatic suggestions forced on this taster. In the mouth, it is similarly compelling, with an eruption of clear black cherry, cassis, and meat juices, faintly bitter notes of fruit skin and pungent herbal and mineral notes adding complexity. The texture is incipiently velvety, imposingly glossy, and a perfect cover for fine, abundant tannins. Spectacularly rich and reverberative in its multifaceted finish, this sensational wine deserves at least a decade of rest before re-opening. BH 95 (1/2008): Sweet black cherry fruit, warm earth, spice and a hint of the sauvage leads to focused, intense, vibrant and well-muscled full-bodied flavors that carry ample authority and punch on the complex, broad and superbly long finish. There is real depth of material here and the intensity builds from the mid-palate on back to the explosive if slightly austere finish. There is so much dry extract here that this is a dramatic and powerful wine. A stunner with simply amazing persistence. Drink: 2017+. VM 94+ (4/2008): Deep red-ruby. Pure but tight aromas of dark raspberry, brown spices and graphite. Dense, fat and rich but quite youthfully reduced, showing notes of smoke and toast. This amazingly chewy and tactile wine needs a lot of patience. Sullen today but very long and strong on the back end, with a powerful impression of dry extract and a finishing note of chocolate. If you invest in a wine like this, don't even think of opening it any time soon (Jeremy Seysses suggests waiting 12 years). |

VM 93+ (4/2009): Good deep red-ruby. Musky, meaty nose is dominated today by chocolate and minerals; lower-pitched than the Clos-Saint-Denis. Fat and sweet in the mouth, with an almost liqueur-like ripeness and wonderful silky depth. Offers compelling sweetness if not quite the detail of the Clos-Saint-Denis. Finishes with a boatload of chewy, granular tannins. Not especially perfumed today but this has the size of a 2005. BH 93 (1/2009): Here there is terrific aromatic depth with a gorgeous mix of red and dark berry fruit, spice, earth, game, underbrush and a subtle minerality that can also be found on the rich, full, sweet and intense big-bodied flavors brimming with buckets of dry extract on the mouth coating, long, powerful and utterly stunning finish. This is a big 2006 yet the focus, balance and sense of harmony are riveting. Drink: 2018+. |

BH 96 (1/2013): An intensely floral nose features notes of rose petals and lavender along with cool red berry fruit liberally laced with wet stone nuances. The taut and muscular broad-scaled and concentrated flavors are precise, intense and explosively long on the focused and stunningly persistent finish that is youthfully austere and breathtakingly intense. This faultlessly well-balanced but very firm effort will require extended cellaring and 15 to 20 years is probably what the structure will require to completely resolve. Drink 2025+. VM 96+ (9/2014): The 2010 Clos de La Roche from Dujac is an infant, but it is also fabulous. All of the signatures are there; soaring aromatics, finely sculpted fruit and vibrant, pulsating tannins. What a privilege it is to drink the 2010 over several hours at dinner. An intensely perfumed, multi-dimensional Burgundy, the 2010 captures all of the potential I have seen in previous tastings. Ideally, the 2010 should be cellared for at least a handful of years, as it is built for a long life that will go out for several decades. Readers who own the 2010 should be thrilled. VM 95+ (3/2013): Good medium red. Pungent aromas and flavors of candied raspberry, flowers, stone and sandalwood show a liqueur-like ripeness. Extremely intense and packed with tangy fruit; in fact, wonderfully expressive and extroverted today for such a dense, even brawny wine. The superb rising finish features big but ripe tannins and great fruit persistence. Has all the elements to make a great and long-lived bottle. WA 93-95 (2/2012): The 2010 Clos de la Roche wafts from the glass with sweet scents of tobacco, crushed flowers and spices. Tasted after the Charmes, the Clos de la Roche comes across as decidedly feminine, but there is plenty of weightless energy being held back, at least that is the sense I get today. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2035. |

BH 93-95 (1/2013): A deft touch of wood frames an intensely earthy, complex and notably ripe nose that features notes of spice, plum and black currant. There is excellent richness, size, weight and muscle to the vibrant middle weight plus flavors that exude a fine extract on the mineral-driven finish that offers extraordinarily good length. This is primary to the point of being quite backward yet it is not hard or aggressive as the balance of structural elements is impeccable. Drink 2023+. VM 92-94 (2/2013): Good medium red. Briary, smoky dark raspberry, minerals and flowers on the nose, plus a whiff of horseradish. Rich, dry and suave but youthfully closed, with pepper and spice notes running through to the firm aftertaste. This will be sweetened and opened up by a racking, but Seysses only planned to do this prior to the bottling. He admits that it's currently "angry"; it's certainly tricky to taste today. |

WA 92 (8/2005): While slightly reductive, the 2003 Clos St.-Denis admirably displays its enormous concentration and depth of fruit. Copious quantities of dark berries are intermingled with notes of herbs, licorice, and red cherries in its complex, and lengthy character. Projected maturity: 2008-2017. VM 90+ (4/2006): Good full, deep red. Musky, decadent aromas of red fruits, flowers, truffle and sweet oak. Concentrated, superripe and broad, with atypical weight for this cuvee Rather firm and unforthcoming today. Very horizontal on the finish, with fine tannins coating the palate. BH 89 (1/2006): There is better freshness here with a nose of mocha and very ripe plum that leads to flavors that are fresh, intense and beautifully textured as the sap buffers the firm and ripe tannins. This is a big wine by the usual standards of Clos St. Denis with ample power and volume culminating in a palate staining finish and noticeable warmth. Drink 2013+. |

BH 93-96 (1/2013): (from a 1.48 ha parcel). Here too an adroit application of wood serves as a discreet foil for the more obvious floral aromas that enjoy added scope from the presence of pure, spicy and highly complex red and dark berry scents. There is an abundance of mouth coating extract that imparts a suave, even lush character to the very rich medium-bodied flavors that are an exercise in finesse and refinement while offering controlled power and Outstanding length. A classic Clos St. Denis. Drink 2026+. VM 93-96 (2/2013): (a roughly 50/50 blend of fruit planted in the early 1950s and a more recent 1991 planting, although Seysses told me that some of the 1991 clones barely produce any fruit): Good bright medium. Pretty perfume of red cherry, raspberry, minerals and rose petal. Juicy and intense if a bit youthfully imploded, showing lovely sappy energy to the spicy red fruit and raspberry flavors. This wonderfully suave, palate-coating midweight offers enticing sweetness and precision, not to mention subtle power. Dense, aromatic and very long on the aftertaste. Really quintessential Clos Saint-Denis, and sure to gain in flesh over the next 8 to 10 years. |

WA 92-95 (5/2011): The 2009 Echezeaux (from one of the cooler sites in the vineyard) hovers on the palate in a weightless expression of grace and class. It is impeccably refined from start to finish, with delicate layers of white flowers and sweet spices that add complexity and nuance to the fruit. The wine’s gorgeous inner fragrance and impossibly fine tannins are first-rate. This is another dazzling wine from Dujac. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2034. BH 92-94 (1/2011): (from the climat Champs Traversin). An intensely floral, spicy, earthy and ripe nose offers up a densely fruited mix of black pinot fruit, black cherry and cassis aromas. The big-bodied flavors are exceptionally cool and fresh yet the tannins are fully mature as they support and shape the restrained, minerally and impressively persistent finish. Like the Malconsorts, this will require at least 15 years to arrive at its peak. Drink 2024+. VM 91-93 (2/2011): Good deep red-ruby color. Musky black cherry, black raspberry, chocolate and underbrush on the nose. Then higher-pitched on the palate than the nose would suggest, cool and filigree in style, with limited fat (this is the lowest in alcohol of the Dujac grand crus at 12.6%). Slight gamey complexity. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and a light touch. |

| BH 90 (1/2015): The reduction this displayed last year from barrel is still present even if there is less of it. There is good freshness and energy to the supple and well-concentrated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced finish where a trace of austerity is present. This possesses outstanding depth and length for its level and while the reduction is a concern my score assumes that it will ultimately dissipate with a few years of bottle age. Drink 2020+. | BH 89 (1/2018): (from Porroux, Le Village, Clos Solon and Les Herbuottes.) A ripe but fresh nose combines both red currant and floral-suffused aromas with those of lavender, earth and a hint of oak. There is good intensity and freshness to the relatively robust middle weight flavors that possess fine delineation before culminating in a youthfully austere, dusty and mouth coating finale where a hint of warmth appears. A quality villages and worth a look. Drink 2022+. Outstanding! |

WA 91 (1/2023): The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has turned out beautifully in bottle, opening in the glass with aromas of cherries, cassis and baking spices, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and primary palate with a vibrant core of fruit, lively acids and powdery structuring tannins. This isn't in any way austere, but it will require more patience than its 2019 or 2021 counterparts to reach its peak of expression. BH 89 (1/2023): Notes of green tea and floral elements add breadth to the aromas of spicy and earthy red currant and cherry. The delicious and appealing energetic medium weight flavors possess a really lovely texture before culminating in a compact, serious and youthfully austere finale. This quality effort is built to reward mid- to perhaps even longer-term cellaring. VM 89 (1/2023): The 2020 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has a heavily perfumed blackberry and crushed strawberry nose, quite sensual, touches of bergamot. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, rather generous with a lovely, slightly saline finish. Neal Martin. |

BH 88-91 (1/2023): Here too there is enough reduction to push the fruit to the background. Otherwise, there is a slightly more volume to the attractively textured medium weight flavors that possess both lovely delineation and purity, all wrapped in a lingering and mildly austere finale. This energetic effort could use better depth but that should reasonably develop in time. VM 90-92 (1/2023): The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Village shows the stem addition slightly more conspicuously than the Chambolle-Village, white pepper and touches of bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, lightly peppered black fruit with notes of tobacco and dark chocolate towards the finish. This gains complexity in the glass. Promising - quintessential Dujac. Neal Martin. WA 89-91 (1/2023): Aromas of dark berries, spices, vine smoke, baking chocolate and pine resin introduce the 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Village, a medium to full-bodied, supple and charming wine that's bright and perfumed, concluding with a rose-inflected finish. |

WA 90-92 (12/2016): The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru comes from four different lieux-dits from north to south of the appellation. It has an attractive bouquet with black cherries, bilberry and orange blossom; the oak neatly folded into the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin, masculine in style with subtle tobacco notes infusing the slightly broody and yet fresh and tensile finish. It deserves a couple of years in bottle and should evolve into a very attractive Morey-Saint-Denis. BH 90-92 (1/2017): A ripe yet agreeably fresh nose features notes of plum, spice, earth and pretty floral nuances. There is both good richness and punch to the medium-bodied and fleshy flavors that tighten up significantly on the overtly powerful and entirely serious finish where a hint of bitter cherry arises. (Drink starting 2027). VM 89-92 (1/2017): Pungent spices and minerals on the nose, but with a more subdued fruit element than the village version. A step up in concentration and density in the mouth but quite backward in the early going and dominated by its structure. Finishes with firm-edged tannins and a strong spicy character. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (1/2011): A highly spiced nose speaks of anise, clove and violet nuances on the pretty mix of blue and black pinot fruit and plum aromas. The rich, full-bodied, concentrated and powerful medium weight plus flavors possess a seductive and velvety mouth feel, all wrapped in a very firm and explosively long finish. This should be wonderful in due time though note well that this will require every bit of 15 years of cellar time. Drink 2024+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92-95 (2/2011): Good deep red. Highly complex and expressive aromas of musky raspberry, minerals, dried flowers and bitter chocolate. A step up in intensity and inner-mouth clarity from the preceding samples, offering terrific density and thickness but also excellent lift to the cherry and raspberry fruit. This boasts an utterly seamless texture of liquid velvet. Finishes ripe and very long, with lush, virtually invisible tannins. A wine like this will be irresistible young but should also age well on its balance and concentration. (The Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux-Monts and the Charmes-Chambertin had not yet finished their malolactic fermentations.) WA 92-94 (5/2011): The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts blossoms on the palate with inimitable grace in its bright red fruit. Floral notes appear later, adding lift and volume. The Malconsorts possesses dazzling inner perfume, with clean, saline notes framing the exquisite finish. This is one of the more generous of the 1er Crus at Dujac, and always one of my personal favorites. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2034. |

VM 94 (4/2015): The 2012 Vosne-Romanee Aux Malconsorts is shaping up to be a real beauty. Dark, sensual and expressive, the 2012 is wonderfully open today, which is quite surprising. As always, Malconsorts is defined by a textural feel of nearly indescribable finesse. There is plenty of that in the 2012. BH 92-95 (1/2014): (from a 1.57 ha parcel.) Reduction. This is completely different from the Beaux Monts, particularly in terms of size and weight as there is real muscle to the impressively concentrated and ripe medium-bodied plus flavors that culminate in a hugely long finish that coats the palate with dry extract. The supporting tannins are also markedly firmer and it's clear that this will require around 15 years to completely realize its full, and considerable, potential yet it should be approachable after 10 years or so. In a word, impressive. Drink 2027+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2015): The 2014 Vosne-Romanee 1Er Cru Malconsorts is more opulent and generous on the nose compared to the Beaumonts with blueberry and black cherry fruit, more red plum and strawberry notes evolving with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth, the whole bunch fruit lending freshness and subtle sous-bois character on the finish. There is a little new wood to be subsumed on the finish, but it has great potential and represents one of the best Malconsorts you will find this year. VM 92-94 (1/2016): Deep, bright red. Soil-driven aromas of raspberry, blackberry, blood orange and iodiney minerality, with a complementary element of sexy oak. Juicy and intense but still youthfully imploded; totally different in grain and texture from the more pliant Beaux Monts. Finishes with terrific sappy energy and serious tannic spine. This will need a minimum of seven or eight years of cellaring. BH 92-94 (1/2016): ( from a 1.57 ha parcel.) The intensely floral-suffused nose is not quite as spicy as that of the Beaux Monts but it is arguably even more complex with its layered aromas of red and dark currant, sandalwood and lilac nuances. There is Outstanding power and punch to the beautifully delineated broad-shouldered flavors that possess a beguiling texture on the complex, balanced and driving mineral-inflected finale. This is terrific but plenty of patience will be required as I suspect that this will close down once it's bottled. Drink 2026+. Outstanding! |

BH 90 (1/2010): A subtly spiced and exuberantly fruity red berry suffused nose displays notes of soy, anise and clove that slide gracefully into fresh, balanced, minerally and precise barely middle weight flavors that are utterly delicious and solidly complex but despite all the elegance and purity of expression, it comes across as just a bit light with touches of herbal and austerity on the finish. This is a wine of discretion and would be easy to overlook blind. Drink 2015+. VM 89-91 (4/2009): Medium red with a pale rim. Dark berries, violet and minerals on the nose and in the mouth. Nicely creamy in the middle, with a silky texture, but quite understated today. This rather reserved wine finishes with tangy red berries and a spicy, peppery tang. Vinified mostly with whole clusters. I suspect this is better than it's showing today. |

| VM 93-95 (1/2018): Very dark ruby-red. Pure, high-pitched aromas of blackberry, violet and crushed rock. A step up in sucrosité and pliancy, offering an almost voluptuous texture to its dense flavors of black cherry, boysenberry, minerals and violet. Verging on chocolatey in its ripeness but holds its shape nicely. Finishes with extremely fine tannins, a slight medicinal reserve, strong saline minerality and superb length. Carrying the highest pH among these 2016s, this beauty conveys a wonderfully relaxed impression without any obvious signs of overripeness. Stephen Tanzer. |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (the entire bottom of this vineyard was fried by frost, according to regisseur François Duvivier): Bright, dark red-ruby. Medicinal blueberry and licorice aromas are lifted by a minty high note; less showy and more restrained on the nose than the Taillepieds and Caillerets today. Then wonderfully dense, primary and pure on the palate, but more vertical and less opulent than the Taillepieds and Caillerets. Strong mineral energy accentuates the impression of vibrancy. A bit less open to inspection today owing to its firm tannic spine. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94 (10/2019): The 2016 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a classic, undergrowth infused bouquet, a mixture of red and black fruit, hints of stewed black tea emerging with time, tobacco and rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, succulent and juicy with a fleshy, almost Volnay-like finish that is very appealing. This is a well crafted and comparatively approachable Pommard. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2021-2040). Neal Martin. BH 93 (3/2023): An agreeably fresh and still relatively primary nose freely reveals its aromas of both red and dark berries, newly turned earth and a hint of wood spice. There remains very good vibrancy to the velvet-textured medium-bodied flavors that flash a touch of bracing bitter pit fruit character on the still firm and sneaky long finale. This balanced effort is coming along nicely and while it could certainly be enjoyed now with 30 minutes of air, I would be inclined to hold it for another 5ish plus years first. (Drink starting 2028). |

| VM 92-95 (1/2018): (there was a lot of frost here, but the Boillots' two parcels of very old vines in Grand Maupertui suffered less than vines at the bottom of the clos; 25 hectoliters per hectare produced; 75% new oak): Good dark red; more deeply colored than Boillot's estate wines from the Côte de Beaune. Lovely perfumed lift to the aromas of red cherry, licorice, spices and flowers. Then fat and thick in the mouth, with dark berry and black cherry flavors energized by salty minerality. Lovely inner-palate tension and flavor complexity here. The tannins are firm but not dusty or dry on the long, rising finish. Boillot does a fermentation integrale for most of his Côte de Nuits wines, vinifying them in barrels, then pressing them and returning them to barrel. This technique makes for gentler extraction and results in an earlier integration of fruit and oak elements, typically yielding rounder, more voluminous wines with silkier tannins but also more structure without dryness. | VM 91-93 (1/2018): (in order to allow the seeds to ripen, Boillot waited until five days after he picked his Volnays to harvest this fruit on September 28, with 12.8% potential alcohol; 50% new oak): Moderately saturated bright medium red. Brooding aromas of dark fruits and menthol. Chalky and penetrating but youthfully tight, conveying a stronger impression of medicinal reserve than the Volnay Les Caillerets. A distinctly masculine, classic Pommard, juicy but imploded in the early going. The mounting finish features firm, mouth-saturating tannins, hints of spices and white pepper, and savory soil suggestions. The Boillots' holding is in Rugiens-Haut, on white soil and sand with relatively little iron content. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 90 (4/2018): A discreet application of wood sets off a more deeply pitched nose of plum, dark cherry, spice and soft earth. Like the Bourgogne there is fine volume to the dense, serious and sappy flavors that possess unusually good complexity to the sneaky long finish. This is an excellent Volnay villages and worthy of your interest. Drink 2023+. Outstanding! |

BH 91 (4/2021): As it did when I originally reviewed this wine, it has the curious kind of reduction the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom). Otherwise there is good density and richness to the velvet-textured larger-scaled flavors that possess robust power on the moderately austere and slightly drying finale that isn't exactly rustic, but it would be fair to say that it's not especially refined either. It's hard to predict how this wine will ultimately turn out as the nose is a bit of a concern given that it's been in bottle almost 5 years. By contrast I suspect that the dryness currently displayed by the finish will slowly dissipate with age. I would add that this is still quite youthful so there will be ample time for that to occur. (Drink starting 2031). WA 90 (1/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to blow off a light touch of youthful reduction, revealing aromas of cassis, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with juicy acids, powdery tannins and good length on the finish. The 2016 can't match the depth and amplitude of the 2015 rendition, but it's a very good effort. |

| BH 92-94 (4/2018): ( from a 4 ha parcel; in contrast to the other Beaune 1er, Weber noted that this suffered almost no frost losses and came in at <30 hl/ha.) Here too the wood treatment is anything but subtle though it stops just short of completely overshadowing the exuberantly spicy plum liqueur and earth-scented nose. There is good drive and even better detail if not the impressive concentration to the medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the ever-so-slightly warm and very firm finish. Again, my predicted range assumes that the wood treatment will be successfully absorbed over time and note as well that plenty of patience will be necessary. Drink 2031+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

JS 94-95 (2/2018): The chalky and stony notes are intermingled with pastry and red to dark cherries, all leading to a palate that shows good acidity, impressive depth and weight of tannins. A cool vintage expression with more intensity at the finish. This will age very well. Try from 2024. BH 93-95 (4/2018): Very, very generous wood treatment is sufficiently toasty to presently dominate the otherwise layered nose of dark cherry, raspberry, earth and sauvage-inflected aromas. There is superb concentration, power and richness to the big-bodied flavors that possess excellent reserves of dry extract that helps to buffer the exceptionally firm tannic spine shaping the superbly long mineral-driven finish. This is at once impressive as hell but it's also very woody and while the underlying material appears to be more than sufficient to eventually integrate the oak, it will require time for this to happen. Drink 2036+. Don't miss! VM 92-95 (1/2018): (these high-altitude vines produced a normal crop in 2016): Moderately saturated dark red. Sexy if slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, tarte au prune and game, with some new oak showing. Very rich, dense and pliant, conveying a distinctly relaxed quality for the vintage. This plump, large-scaled grand cru finishes with superb restrained sweetness, noteworthy finesse of tannins, and serious building length, with its lightly saline black raspberry fruit complemented by an almost chocolatey ripeness. An extremely promising vintage for this wine. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-95 (4/2018): Here the oak/menthol influence on the spicy aromas of plum, cassis and soft earth is more moderate though it's still far from subtle. There is both excellent volume and precision to the delicious, sophisticated and energetic medium-bodied flavors that possess a taut muscularity before concluding in a gorgeously complex and persistent finish. This is pretty much textbook Les Cailles though one that is also clearly in need of extended cellaring. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2018): (not much frost here): Healthy dark red-ruby. The nose offers a tight, sappy core of medicinal red cherry, blackberry, blueberry, licorice and rocky minerality. Densely packed yet light on its feet, with its black and purple berry flavors complicated and enlivened by saline minerality. Finishes energetic and very long, with lingering salinity, the firm tannins arriving late. Superb potential from this top site. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 92-94 (4/2018): More discreet wood more easily allows the overtly spicy aromas of poached plum, lavender and tea, The round yet reasonably well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated mouth feel as well as fine mid-palate density, all wrapped in a youthfully austere, mineral-driven and very firm finish. Unlike the Grèves however, this excellent effort should be reasonably approachable after 5 to 7 years. Drink 2031+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! VM 92-94 (1/2018): (from a very good yield of 40 hectoliters per hectare, as this vineyard, which Weber told me "usually gets hit by something or other," was not affected by frost in 2016): Good dark red. Alluring, mellow aromas and flavors of redcurrant, tobacco, spices and minerals, plus a suggestion of toffee. Round, silky and plush, offering mouthfilling voluptuousness without losing its shape. The compellingly round, sweet finish shows a fine dusting of tannins and superb length. Absolutely no sign of vine stress here! Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright, dark red. Very ripe, almost liqueur-like aromas of raspberry and boysenberry. Slightly high-toned, smooth and dense in the mouth, with sweet, sappy, energetic black fruit flavors dominating. The substantial fine-grained tannins arrive late, spreading out to saturate the sides of the tongue. This seriously concentrated wine finishes impressively long and slightly tight. I can't recall ever scoring Chevillon's Pruliers higher from barrel. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-94 (1/2018): A restrained and discreetly earthy nose features ripe plum and black berry liqueur aromas that are set off by a moderate lashing of wood. The broad-scaled, rich and intense flavors possess a sleek muscularity along with excellent power, all wrapped in a rustic, austere and backward finish. As is usually the case, this is the most obviously Nuits in character among the Chevillon wines and like the Perrières, it demands considerable patience but it's virtually always worth the wait. | BH 92 (4/2018): (from a .80 ha parcel in the climat of Sur les Grèves.) Here the nose plays on the edge of reduction and while it doesn't completely mask the floral-scented nose of dark berries and earth, it does render it less expressive. The rich and notably denser medium-bodied flavors also flash a lovely minerality that adds a sense of lift to the much firmer, even robust finish that is presently somewhat youthfully austere. BH 94 (4/2018): An ultra-spicy and floral-suffused nose speaks of violet, rose petal, lavender, tea and a broad range of dark berry aromas. The highly refined, vibrant and beautifully well-delineated flavors exude evident minerality that continues onto the strikingly long and complex finish. This knockout is textbook Petits Monts. (Drink starting 2028). VM 92+ (1/2018): Bright light-medium red. Lovely aromatic verve to the aromas of raspberry, rose petal, minerals and white pepper. Juicy and firmly built, conveying excellent sneaky intensity to its flavors of red berries, minerals and flowers. Finishes a bit clenched in a positive way but juicy and high-pitched, with a vivacious note of orange zest. This very refined, sharply delineated wine finishes with firm building tannins and lingering salty minerality. I suspect that seven or eight years of aging will bring a more supple texture and an even higher score. (Drink between 2025-2036). Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 95 (7/2022): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaut Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has certainly stepped up in intensity since I last tasted it. Redcurrant, cranberry, juniper berries and just a touch of mint, fine delineation with fine focus. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfectly judged acidity, a touch of allspice and white pepper, fanning out gloriously on the expansive finish. Time to raise my previous score. Tasted at Domaine Duroché. (Drink between 2022-2040). Neal Martin. WA 92+ (4/2019): Entirely destemmed, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaut Saint-Jacques reveals beautiful aromas of bright cherries and raspberries that mingle with scents of spice, grilled game bird, loamy soil and rose petal. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with good concentration and fine-grained structuring tannins that assert themselves on the finish. This will reward bottle age. |

| VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 89-91 (1/2018): A slightly more elegant nose is composed mostly by notes from the red side of the fruit spectrum along with evident floral elements. While there is certainly good density this is more 'Chambollesque' than the old vines cuvée with a finer mouthfeel to the middle weight flavors that offer fine length on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finish. Lovely. Drink 2022+. |

| BH 91 (1/2019): This is actually aromatically similar to the Echézeaux at present with its mildly reductive nose that is slightly earthier and not quite as spicy. There is by contrast both more volume and more concentration as well to the bold, robust and broad-shouldered flavors that possess a velvety mid-palate that contrasts markedly with the distinctly firm and austere if slightly drying finish where it's not entirely clear that it will eventually harmonize. A question mark. (Drink starting 2031). |

BH 92 (1/2019): Here too there is a touch of reduction that pushes the notes of red currant, cherry, violet and spice elements to the background. There is though good freshness to richer and even more full-bodied flavors that possess outstanding concentration thanks to the abundance of dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the slightly less structured finale that also offers fine length and solid depth. As pretty as this is though, it can't match the evident class of the Gaudichots good as it is. (Drink starting 2028). VM 89 (7/2018): The 2016 Echézeaux Grand Cru has a floral bouquet, quite earthy in style but well defined. The palate has a structured, rather backward opening with grainy tannin and a savory, meaty finish that suggests this will be best enjoyed in its youth. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

BH 92 (7/2023): As it was when last reviewed from bottle (see herein), there is a vague touch of reduction on the still somewhat reluctant nose of ripe black fruit, spice and soft floral nuances. There is both excellent volume and richness to the sleek and refined mineral-driven middle weight flavors that display fine length is perhaps not quite as much depth as one might like to see. With that duly noted, this has not yet peaked even if it's not so structured that it couldn't be enjoyed now even though my advice would be to continue to hold for another 5 to 8 years. (Drink starting 2028). VM 88 (7/2018): The 2016 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru has a very reduced nose with floral scents trying to escape the SO2. The palate is balanced with a sweet core of red fruit, rather sorbet-like with a chewy finish that does not quite articulate the propitious vineyard. (Drink between 2019-2025). Neal Martin. |

| BH 91-93 (1/2018): (a 2 ha parcel with a mix of 80% 75+ year old vines and the remainder of 15 to 20 year old vines.) A beautifully layered nose offers up notes of both red and black pinot fruit, spice, warm earth and evident sauvage nuances. BH 91-93 (1/2018): A slightly fresher if earthier and less obvious spicy nose displays notes of essence of red currant and a discreet floral touch. There is a sleek muscularity to the much more mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that deliver excellent punch and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and complex finale. This is quite firm and a bit youthfully austere as well but I suspect that the impeccable balance will allow it to be enjoyable young. Drink 2028+. Outstanding! VM 90-92 (1/2018): Slightly reduced and a bit lower-pitched than the Rouges, offering aromas of black raspberry complicated by soil tones. Plusher, sweeter and more pliant on entry than the Rouges, then juicy and alive in the middle palate but a bit inexpressive in the early going. Tightens up on the back end, finishing with a firm edge. A bit disorganized today and in need of further elevage. Stephen Tanzer. |

BH 97 (1/2019): (from Richebourg proper.) Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echezeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it. Drink 2038+. VM 95-98 (1/2018): Bright red with ruby tones. Vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are lifted by a violet topnote. Utterly suave on entry, conveying outstanding precision and energy to its flavors of black and blue fruits and crushed rock, with a piquant hint of bitter orange marmalade contributing to the overall impression of nobility. Suave, toothdusting tannins are totally supported by fruit and the seamless, palate-saturating finish perfumes the mouth with minerals, violet and Valrhona bitter chocolate, going on for a minute or more. As charismatic as this young Richebourg is today, it's far from the most demonstrative wine in the cellar. It will need at least a decade of bottle aging and should last for at 25 to 30 years in a cool cellar. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93 (4/2018): This is the only one of the four wines in the range where the wood regimen could not be described as discreet though even here it is by no means intrusive as the cool and airy aromas of red berries, plum and floral-suffused aromas are easily appreciated. The strikingly refined, intense and chiseled medium-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality, all wrapped in a highly energetic, focused and youthfully austere finish. Like the Rugiens this is going to require extended keeping to see it at its peak. In a word, excellent. Drink 2028+. Sweet Spot Outstanding! |

| BH 93 (1/2019): A brooding and all but mute nose requires aggressive swirling to reveal its notes of intensely earthy aromas of dark currant and raspberry where a background nuance of the sauvage appears. The rich, full-bodied, naturally sweet and lightly mineral-suffused flavors possess good freshness and a seductive texture before culminating in an impressively complex, driving and palate staining finish. This is more refined than it usually is yet a wine that doesn't lack for power and punch. In short, this excellent effort is promising but notably backward. |

BH 92-94 (4/2018): A broad-ranging nose is comprised by notes of earth, spice, plum, dark cherry, violet and more moderate though hardly subtle wood. The rich, round and impressively-scaled flavors possess fine density and evident power that carries over to the sappy and palate coating finish that is admirably persistent. This isn't quite as complex as the Bèze but there is excellent underlying material such that this should ultimately transform into an excellent CdlR. (Drink starting 2034). WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the Clos Saint-Denis, although I felt that there is more detail and complexity in situ. The palate is very refined with filigree tannin, great tension and focus, a gentle grip in the mouth with an almost tart, tensile finish that lingers in the mouth. I also appreciate the spiciness on the aftertaste. Superb. |

VM 95 (10/2019): The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a very seductive, candied bouquet with pure blueberries and red cherry fruit under a veneer of vanillary new oak that seems in sync with the fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, smooth in texture, but you might argue, missing the mineral tension on the finish compared to others. It is a very competent Clos Saint-Jacques albeit not the most memorable. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2024-2046). Neal Martin. WA 94 (4/2019): Tasted from bottle, the 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jacques (Domaine Louis Jadot) is one of the most reticent wines in the Jadot portfolio this year, reluctantly unfurling in the glass with notes of red berries, rose petals, forest floor and cedary new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and concentrated, with a deep, multidimensional core, rich structuring tannins and bright acids, concluding with a notably long and expansive finish. While there is considerable upside here for the patient, this will demand significant bottle age. While the 2015 rendition is more flamboyant, the 2016 may well rival it in ultimate quality. |

| BH 93-95 (4/2018): Lafarge explained that this was made from fruit that was destemmed by hand using what the Burgundians call a claie en osier, or a lattice made of wicker that was placed on top of a fermenter; this approach was sometimes used in the 19th C). A dazzlingly pure, fresh and soaring nose features notes of essence of red cherry, currant, spice and soft floral scents. While the medium weight flavors do not have the same size and power of the Clos des Chênes, they are notably finer with a sleek muscularity and terrific length on the highly refreshing and energetic finish. This is really lovely stuff and a complete knock-out. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! Outstanding! |

WA 93-95 (12/2017): The 2016 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru includes 85% whole-bunch fruit and is matured in 50% new oak. It was picked around 24 to 29 September. It has a fresh and discrete bouquet at first, the whole bunch influencing the red fruit, infusing scents of autumn leaves and Earl Grey into the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, good grip in the mouth, building with time to a very composed, classically styled, quite persistent and lightly spiced finish whereby the whole bunch is completely subsumed by the fruit. Wonderful. VM 92-94 (1/2018): (38 hectoliters per hectare produced; vinified with 85% whole clusters, down from a normal 100%; aging in 50% new oak, vs. 33% for the premier cru and village wine): Healthy dark red. Captivating perfume of red berries, spices and flowers lifted by a sexy herbal element from the stems. Silky, dense and concentrated, showing terrific precision and a sappy personality to its complex flavors of red berries, brown spices, underbrush and dried flowers. Lovely fruit intensity here. Very firm and built to age but even today there is nothing hard about this grand cru. Finishes very long and sweet, with refined tannins. I'm not sure that this wine will ever go through an extended sullen phase in bottle. Stephen Tanzer. BH 91-93 (1/2018): (produced from two large parcels of differing vine ages - one that is approximately two-thirds of the blend and is now 50+ years of age and a second, smaller group of vines that is approximately 25+ years of age; made with 85% whole cluster and 50% new wood.) An overtly floral suffused nose offers up ripe aromas of red currant, rose petal, plum and a hint of exotic spice. There is first-rate punch to the bigger and richer yet still well-defined medium weight plus flavors that possess very good if not exceptional length on the nicely complex finish. This is certainly pretty but it doesn't appear, at least at this early juncture, to have the class and sheer substance of either the 2014 or the 2015. Time will of course tell but for the moment, I would describe the 2016 Clos des Lambrays as very good rather than excellent. Drink 2028+. |

| VM 92 (10/2019): The 2016 Corton-Grancey Grand Cru is deeper in colour than its peers with blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of mulch-like undergrowth and wilted violets. This is quite complex, even if it misses a little joie-de-vivre. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, quite precise and classy towards the finish that shows impressive integration of oak and substance. This is a well crafted, very typical Corton that should age with style. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2022-2036). Neal Martin. |

| VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru has a well defined and quite complex bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and briary aromas, very focused and harmonious and the oak nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well judged acidity, very harmonious with a gentle, blackberry and mulberry-tinged finish. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. | VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Veilles Vignes 1er Cru, comprising one-third whole bunch fruit, has a perfumed and floral bouquet with copious raspberry, briary and cold stone aromas. There is an engaging brightness to the aromatics here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, nicely structured with a fine line of salinity. The vivid nature of the nose is translated onto the palate. It finishes in tensile and refreshing fashion. This is an excellent Morey with unerring symmetry. Tasted at the Domaine. | BH 90-93 (1/2018): Here the wood treatment is no longer subtle and it completely dominates the underlying spice and fruit scents. On the plus side there is excellent concentration to the rich and full-bodied flavors that possess evident power and muscularity while delivering excellent length on the slightly warm finish where the wood sweetens it. This too is youthfully awkward at present and note that my range offers the benefit of the doubt that, like the Ech, this will harmonize if given at least a few years of bottle age first. | BH 90-92 (4/2018): Today there is enough reduction to push the underlying fruit to the background. | BH 93 (4/2018): A highly complex nose features notes of menthol, dark currant, raspberry, wood, spice and the barest hint of VA. The sleek, intense and wonderfully refined middle weight flavors brim with both minerality and dry extract, all wrapped in a well-balanced and impressively persistent finish. Good stuff in a built-to-age package. Drink 2028+. |

| BH 92-95 (1/2018): (from a .16 ha parcel in Charmes proper of vines planted in 1885 that have never been pulled up though Roty points out that all those that have died over the years have been replanted.) Much more moderate, though hardly invisible, oak influence can be found on the notably ripe aromas of cassis, black cherry, plum and a panoply of spice and earth elements. The detailed, powerful and punchy imposingly-scaled flavors possess first-rate mid-palate density as the sappy dry extract coats the mouth on the very firmly structured finish that flashes both better depth and persistence. Excellent quality though note well that this is very serious and will need extended aging. Drink 2033+. |

| VM 92-94 (1/2018): Bright red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of blackberry, licorice and violet complicated by a rocky quality. Pungent, tangy and high-pitched, offering a very fine-grained texture to its flavors of cassis, black cherry and violet; aeration brought a slightly less black note of raspberry and sexy savory soil tones. From vines on very shallow soil just across the Route des Grands Crus from Chambertin, this wine offers terrific punch and building sweetness. Both these vines and those in Mazoyères-Chambertin were planted shortly after World War II but a small part of the Charmes was replanted in 1998. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 93 (10/2019): The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is comparatively deep in colour. The bouquet is surfeit with red berry fruit, briary and crushed stone aromas, all well defined and beautifully assimilated with the new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black and red fruit, well judged acidity, clean and crisp with gentle grip on the finish. This is a superb Corton that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. (DIAM 30 closure) (Drink between 2021-2045). Neal Martin. BH 93 (1/2019): An equally deft application of wood is present on the reticent aromas of plum, black cherry, earth and a whiff of the sauvage that with aggressive swirling have no trouble being appreciated. I very much like the sleek, even polished mouthfeel of the bigger, richer and more powerful broad-shouldered flavors that display excellent persistence on the palate coating, dusty and beautifully long finale where hints of bitter cherry pit and oak can be found. This is very firmly structured and will need at least a few years of bottle age first but in time it should be excellent. (Drink starting 2031). |

| VM 95 (8/2020): The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is consistent with previous notes. It is blessed with an irresistible bouquet that showcases Romain Taupenot's ability to conjure crystalline fruit from this vineyard. Medium-bodied on the palate, not inherently powerful, yet equipped with such a saline, complex finish that you cannot help but immediately return for another sip. This is superb. Neal Martin. |

| BH 93 (4/2018): Here the nose is quite similar to that of the Frémiets save for the fact that it is notably spicier. There is a beguiling inner mouth perfume to the super-sleek, delineated and mineral-driven flavors that possess even better depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced and harmonious finish. This is very classy and should drink well young and with extended aging. (Drink starting 2028). |

VM 93+ (1/2020): The 2016 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet of vivacious red cherry, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and touches of sage and thyme. The palate is very well balanced with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and crescendoing gently to a slightly meaty, delineated, long finish. I suspect this might close down for a few years, but there is huge potential here. (Drink between 2022-2042). Neal Martin. BH 93 (4/2018): A discreet application of wood sets off pure and airy aromas of essence of red cherry, lavender and violet. There is once again fine mid-palate density to the vibrant, sleek and intense middle weight flavors that aren't quite as stony but even more complex and particularly so on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. This too is a really lovely effort that should amply repay extended keeping. (Drink starting 2028). |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
