BH 91-93 (5/2011): Like the Taillepieds, this is also highly perfumed with rose petal, fresh red berries, wet stone and an earthy component that can also be found on the equally mineral-inflected, cool and pure flavors that evidence excellent detail and real verve on the delicious, intense and persistent finish. A lovely and understated Pommard of finesse. Drink 2019+. Sweet Spot Outstanding!
WA 93 (4/2012): The 2009 Pommard Les Pezerolles is rich, round and seductive. Layers of fruit caress the palate in this enveloping, textured Burgundy. There is plenty of intensity in the glass. Hints of hard candy and licorice wrap around the finish. The Pezerolles was made with 100% destemmed fruit. Although I like the wine’s frank immediacy, I also think it will age gracefully. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
VM 91 (4/2012): (from all-destemmed fruit): Medium red. Flamboyantly aromatic nose combines kirsch, strawberry, smoke, leather and earth. Silky, sweet and pliant; can't quite match the Mitans for definition but an element of minerality provides energy. Finishes suave and persistent, with smooth tannins and moderate lift. |

Otherwise the middle weight flavors possess a similar mouth feel to the Taillepieds with fine delineation and more subtle minerality on the mildly austere finish that flashes a hint of dryness though I doubt that it will last. BH 87-89 (5/2006): A very gentle touch of wood frames ripe red pinot fruit, earth and background notes of iron and underbrush that introduce very ripe, round and rich medium full flavors that offer good vivacity and punch on the moderately long finish. The tannins do not have a high degree of phenolic ripeness yet there is no trace of astringency or undue dryness. (Drink starting 2010). |

The mouth feel of the slightly bigger and richer flavors remains refined, lacy and focused with a lovely sense of underlying tension that continues onto the markedly firmer finish. Lovely.
VM 92-94 (1/2017): Good dark red. Subdued but precise aromas of raspberry, cherry and flowers. Compellingly intense and lively in the mouth, offering terrific juicy cut to its red fruit and mineral flavors. This beauty boasts a firm spine of acidity and finishes with lovely ripeness and lingering perfume. Stephen Tanzer.
WA 92-94 (12/2016): The 2015 Volnay 1er Cru Champans has a very pure, very attractive bouquet with mineral-tinged red cherry and cranberry fruit that is equidistant in style between Pommard and Volnay. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. I love the tension here, that nascent energy and salinity towards the finish that actually does veer towards Pommard in terms of structure. Excellent. |

There is simply more material here with a buried yet noticeable tannic spine. A terrific wine of impressive balance. |

JM 92-95 (11/2018): All whole bunch, 55% new wood and a late malolactic fermentation here. Quite rich purple, with a lighter rim, raspberry fruit, the whole bunch effect is in support rather than too obvious. Firm fruit, comes up to the tannins at the back, Decent acidity, but a little lack of concentration, I thought. Brian says just more backward. But note that the quality of the fruit is up where it should be.
VM 92-94 (1/2019): The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is entirely whole cluster fruit matured in 50% new oak. It has a backward and reticent bouquet, yet one can tell there are coiled up black fruit here, mixed with raspberry coulis and mulberry scents. The palate is medium-bodied with dense, slightly chewy tannin at first, grippy and assertive in style. Yet it manages to retain admirable balance with an engaging, quite saline, lightly spiced finish that fans out with style. Excellent. Neal Martin.
BH 91-94 (4/2019): An overtly floral-suffused nose displays a pretty panoply of spice elements on the purple fruit and sandalwood-scented aromas. There is slightly better density to the tautly muscular and powerful flavors that exhibit fine length and depth. Once again this is not super-dense but even so it appears to possess outstanding development potential though note well that it will need plenty of time to realize it. Drink 2034+. |

WA 96-97 (6/2007): Vinified to mirror the regular cuvee and named for de Montille’s mother is a separate 2005 Vosne Romanee Les Malconsorts “Christianne" from a half-hectare plot (easy to spot on any detailed vineyard map) that jumps the road and juts into the original La Tache. The result is a totally different wine - and what a wine it is! Subtle brown spices, jasmine, orange rind mingle with moss, mineral nuance, and black fruits. Raw red meat and savory soy notes emerge on the palate. This displays singular textural refinement and elegance, purity and clarity of fruit, and an ineffable complexity of mineral nuances from stem to stern. The billowing richness of folds of black fruits set up a harmonious, almost Riesling-like call and response with minerals. Explore the extraordinary mysteries of this wine beginning in 5-7 years, though one could well imagine it being worth holding for more than twice that time.
VM 93-96 (4/2007): Good deep red. Deeply pitched, somewhat reduced nose hints at darker fruits. Then rounder, larger and deeper on the palate than the "regular" Malconsorts; distinctly spherical in shape, an impression that leavens the sheer size of this wine. Complicating notes of earth and vegetable matter. Finish very long and full, with great finesse of tannins. These vines are from an enclave in La Tache, and yet when I tasted these two samples blind, side by side, this one struck me as having the volume and complicating earth notes of Romanee-Conti while the "regular" Malconsorts was more La Tache-like in its early perfume and higher-pitched fruit. They were quite different in style.
BH 92-95 (4/2007): This is just a flat out sexy and seductive wine with a wonderful panoply of spice nuances, including clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, sandalwood and hoisin that continues onto the rich, velvety and mouth coating medium full flavors that drench the palate in sap and possess a beguiling mouth feel. Like the "regular" Malconsorts, this appears less structured than it really is at present because of the ample sève and impeccable balance. In sum, this clearly justifies having made a separate cuvee and should make for a wonderful 25+ year wine. Don't miss! Drink 2015+. |

WA 93-94 (12/2009): As described in detail in issue 171 de Montille's 2006 Vosne-Romanee Les Malconsorts - Christianne comes from a share of that cru which is clearly visible on vineyard maps as if it had been cut-out from (or juts into) today's La Tache. With a more exotic, musky, and effusive floral perfume; similar plum and raspberry fruit and smokiness; and more palate-staining concentration than the corresponding "regular" Malconsorts, this also carries more structure and a more vivid if hard to pin down mineral dimension. The finish here is positively tidal in its expansiveness and relentlessness. Where the other bottling has more 2006-tyical virtues, this "Christianne" could easily be taken for a 2005. It will never give chase to its own 2005 counterpart, but it should prove immensely rewarding to follow for 12-15 years.
VM 93 (4/2009): Good full medium red. Aromas of raspberry, minerals and Oriental spices. A step up in intensity over the foregoing 2006s; in fact, this is a real spice bazaar on the palate, with lovely sweetness and penetrating perfume intensified by very firm but harmonious acidity. Plenty of lurking stony minerality underneath. Finishes quite suave, with a solid spine of tannins and acids and captivating lingering perfume.
BH 91-94 (4/2008): Here the slightly more elegant nose is even more floral as well as slightly spicier as well but otherwise, really quite similar, leading to rich, full, sweet and beautifully detailed and texturally, the mouth feel is slightly rounder as the tannins appear to be more completely integrated at this early stage, which confers a greater sense of harmony and overall balance. | VM 93 (8/2021): The 2017 Saint-Aubin En Remilly 1er Cru is nicely focused on the nose, becoming peachy with aeration, then revealing touches of beeswax and ripe clementines; then all of these scents ebb and allow the terroir to flood through. The palate is well balanced with nicely integrated oak, well-judged and plenty of salinity on the finish. | VM 90-93 (9/2015): (these south-facing vines were picked first, on September 10): Pale, bright yellow. Musky ripe peach and noble herbs on the nose; this wine is actually the highest in volatile acidity of the range, but still a fairly low 0.4 grams per liter. Fat, sweet and large-scaled but without the precision of the Clos de la Mouchère. Finishes salty and a touch dry. This may be a bit less fresh because I tasted it from a 228-liter barrique, rather than from a larger barrel. |

| BH 94 (6/2016): (from a huge 3.65 ha plot in Le Corton.) Mild notes of wood and reduction mask the underlying fruit though I can say that it appears to be ripe. Otherwise there is outstanding volume and concentration to the big-bodied and openly muscular flavors that exhibit evident power and punch on the hugely long finale. This is presently very compact and like the Perrières very clearly built to age. I should note that while this is certainly going to need time it is not especially austere and I suspect that it will begin to drink well after only 5-ish years or so if that's your preference. There is fantastic detail to the focused, mineral-driven and powerful middle weight plus flavors that do a slow build from the mid-palate all the way back to the explosively long, balanced and bone dry finish. This appears to be drawn directly from liquid Kimmeridgian and should also amply reward longer-term cellaring. In a word, brilliant. Drink 2026+. Don't miss!

Delivers a saline, sappy combination of rich peachy fruit and floral/mineral lift, with a remarkably weightless quality. The chewy, saline, bone-dry finish reinforced by minerality conveys a powerful impression of dry extract and Kimmeridgian soil. Really inexorable on the back end.
WA 94 (8/2016): The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots has an almost clinical bouquet: extremely well defined and poised, quite subtle in style with fresh green apple, Conference pear and sea spray/oyster shells aromas. But everything is tightly wound at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with just the right amount of salinity, long and tender on the finish. This was impressive in vat and equally so in bottle. |

There is terrific energy and minerality present on the impressively concentrated and generously proportioned middle weight flavors that possess a succulent yet markedly dry finish that stops just short of overt austerity. WA 90 (10/2017): Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, Leroux's 2014 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has a powerful nose with much more tropical scents than I would expect from this vintage: mango and passion fruit, a touch of orange rind with time. The palate is rich on the entry with that mango/passion fruit theme continuing and the wood nicely integrated, but it just does not quite deliver the mineralité or tension you would expect. Not bad at all, but here it was surpassed by some of its peers.
BH 93-95 (6/2016): Relatively heavy reduction again renders the nose tough to judge. On the plus side there is terrific volume and mid-palate concentration to the big-bodied flavors that possess unusually good refinement in the context of what is typical for Bâtard and this is particularly so for the racy and tightly wound finale. Like the CC this beauty is going to require extended bottle aging but should very much be worth the wait. (Drink starting 2026).
VM 92-95 (9/2015): Healthy pale yellow. Very ripe, deeply pitched aromas of apricot and subtle spices. Highly concentrated and plush, offering a high-wire act of sweet fruit and brisk acidity. This rather powerful Batard is going to require time in bottle to harmonize fully. Stephen Tanzer. |

| BH 93 (10/2017): The wood treatment isn't shy, indeed today it fights somewhat with the otherwise cool and very pretty floral, pear, apple and soft petrol nuances. There is fine density to the sleek, sophisticated and utterly delicious medium-bodied flavors that possess good punch while offering excellent length on the balanced finish where the only nit is an unexpected touch of warmth. It's sufficiently slight however and I suspect few readers would find it off-putting and with age, it may actually become less noticeable. Ramonet rarely misses with this wine and they certainly didn't in 2014 though I would point out that this is going to need time in bottle to develop further depth. Drink 2024+. Outstanding! |

I have always tended to focus on the Ramonet's Chassagnes, but this, like the excellent Puligny Enseignères, is a persuasive argument for pursuing their Pulignys just as ardently as well as testimony to the quality of their range in 2014. |

BH 93 (10/2016): (from relatively young vines based in Montmains proper.) The equally cool and airy nose is much more floral with ample citrus character on the iodine, tidal pool and algae-suffused aromas that are also trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The medium-bodied flavors are finer if less powerful with a lovely mouth feel that continues onto the intensely saline and mineral-inflected finish that is a really lovely combination of depth, length and finesse. This super saline effort is well worth checking out. Drink 2022+. Outstanding!
WA 93 (8/2016): The 2014 Chablis 1er Cru Montmain has a lifted bouquet with granite and slate-like aromas, a little withdrawn at the moment, but you can tell this will repay 3-4 years in bottle. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity, hints of orange rind and lemon zest, good depth in the mouth with fresh pear and quince towards the finish. Impressive, but it will need time. This killer Chablis has a bright future ahead of it.
VM 92 (8/2015): Pale, bright yellow-green. Musky aromas and flavors of quinine, mint and white pepper, plus an element of dusty herbs that reminded me of Grüner Veltliner. BH 95 (10/2016): (from a .75 ha parcel.) This is even more infused with classic Chablis elements with its abundance of oyster shell and tidal pool nuances that add breadth to the notable cool and restrained citrus peel and green fruit aromas. The rich, powerful, concentrated and mouth coating broad-shouldered flavors possess real drive but also beautiful detail on the pungently mineral-driven finish that possesses Outstanding length and almost painful intensity. This is stunningly good and while I don't think that it will quite match the unbelievable quality of the 2008, it may not miss by much. Drink 2026+.
WA 94+ (8/2016): The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Valmur, which I did not taste last year from barrel, has a riveting bouquet with cold, wet limestone and slate-like aromas that are extremely focused. The palate is well defined with a keen thread of acidity, very saline with a mouthwatering sappiness on the finish. Stubbornly backward, almost sultry and petulant, it will need several years to really settle into its groove. I strongly suspect this has something up its sleeve for those who allow this to mature for several years in the cellar.
VM 94 (8/2015): Pale yellow. Sexy lavender lift to the aromas of grapefruit, white pepper and crushed herbs. Tactile, broad and utterly spherical, with a strong saline character harmonizing nicely with the wine's full ripeness. Outstanding energy and length here; this wine should fill in further with bottle aging. Stephen Tanzer. |

This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
