2018 Dom. William Fevre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur
Vintage: 2018
Region: Burgundy White
Color/Type: White
Size: 6x750ML
ETA 90-120 Days; No cancellations or returns. This item may be subject to tariffs.
Tasting Notes:
BH 93 (11/2020): (from a 1.1 ha parcel of vines that is close to Vaudésir and extends all the way from Grenouilles to the tree line at the top of the hill). There is just enough wood to notice framing the green fruit, quinine, algae and ocean breeze-inflected aromas. The mouthfeel of the big, bold and robust flavors is muscular and serious while displaying outstanding length on the super-saline and impressively complex if only moderately dry finale. This too is quite impressive though it is very clearly built for extended aging. Drink 2030+.

| BH 91-93 (10/2021): Here too the nose is elegant, pure and layered but with more floral and spice nuances adding breadth to the cooler and more restrained aromas. There is both excellent intensity and density to the mineral-driven flavors that terminate in a bone-dry, sneaky long and balanced finale. This too is really very good. Drink 2027+. |

JM 93-95 (6/2021): Lighter lemon yellow, the bouquet offering a light touch of menthol and especially anis. Deeper generous soil here but they think they have learnt to get the best out of it. Certainly a grand cru wealth of fruit, the acidity keeps the balance very nicely, a generous warm overcoat and good length. Nice wine! BH 92-94 (10/2021): This is restrained to the point of being all but aromatically mute though aggressive swirling eventually coaxes notes of green fruit, citrus peel and oyster shell nuances to reveal themselves. There is both excellent volume and concentration to the big-bodied, powerful and imposing flavors that are focused, structured and youthfully austere. This is very much a work in progress, and I would advise allowing this at least 5 years of cellaring and it should easily reward a decade or more. VM 92-94 (10/2021): The 2020 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru comes from six hectares of vines, southwest- and south-facing, forming the two different cuvées. The bouquet unfolds to offer lovely yellow fruit and oyster leaf aromas, well defined and quite generous. The palate is taut and crisp with fine acidity and moderate depth, but very pretty and composed toward the saline finish. There is plenty of substance already in situ and I foresee this aging with class. Neal Martin. |

BH 96 (10/2016): ( from a 2.2 ha parcel at the bottom section of the vineyard; even so, the vineyard is so steep here that it must be worked entirely by hand as tractors would be dangerous to use.) Once again, based on the nose alone, this could be nothing else but Chablis with its melange of tidal pool, mineral reduction, citrus blossom and discreet spice nuances. There is fantastic detail to the focused, mineral-driven and powerful middle weight plus flavors that do a slow build from the mid-palate all the way back to the explosively long, balanced and bone dry finish. This appears to be drawn directly from liquid Kimmeridgian and should also amply reward longer-term cellaring. In a word, brilliant. Drink 2026+. Don't miss! VM 95 (7/2016): Very pale yellow. Very ripe but vibrant nose combines lime, spices, white pepper, crushed rock and liquid minerals. Delivers a saline, sappy combination of rich peachy fruit and floral/mineral lift, with a remarkably weightless quality. The chewy, saline, bone-dry finish reinforced by minerality conveys a powerful impression of dry extract and Kimmeridgian soil. Really inexorable on the back end. WA 94 (8/2016): The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots has an almost clinical bouquet: extremely well defined and poised, quite subtle in style with fresh green apple, Conference pear and sea spray/oyster shells aromas. But everything is tightly wound at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, harmonious and poised with just the right amount of salinity, long and tender on the finish. This was impressive in vat and equally so in bottle. |

VM 94+ (7/2016): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Subtle, discreet nose offers hints of citrus fruits, spices, white pepper and minerals. Then almost shockingly massive and powerful in the mouth, boasting bulletproof citrus and white peach flavors energized by harmonious acidity (but barely four grams per liter, according to Didier Seguier). More robust and masculine than the Preuses and drier and more bracing on the long finish, this sappy wine needs time to harmonize. But as with all of these 2015s, there's nothing hard about this grand cru. Stephen Tanzer. BH 93 (10/2017): ( from a 2.2 ha parcel at the bottom section of the vineyard; even so, the vineyard is so steep here that it must be worked entirely by hand as tractors would be dangerous to use.) A reserved but ripe nose features white fruit and floral notes that are set off by deft touches of classic Chablis character and wood. There is both good richness and power to the concentrated, vibrant and mineral-driven medium plus weight flavors that also possess ample amounts of dry extract that confer a textured feel to the impressively intense and mouth coating finish. This too is really quite good. Drink 2023+. WA 93 (8/2017): The 2015 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Cote de Bouguerots was the standout wine when I tasted the range of William Fevre from barrel. Now in bottle, the nose has closed down, but there remains a brooding intensity here and superb mineralite. The palate is very well balanced with a touch of orange zest and quince on the entry. There is a keen line of acidity here and quite a powerful finish that lingers long in the mouth. Give this 3 or 4 years in bottle and it should offer another 10 years of drinking pleasure. |

WA 96 (7/2022): In a sense, the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots offers a resumé of several of Fèvre's grand cru bottlings, uniting the taut musculature of Valmur and the ethereal, mineral profile of Les Preuses, with some of the perfumed sensuality of Vaudésir and fleshy texture of Bougros. The result is certainly a very compelling wine, exhibiting aromas of crisp green orchard fruit, white flowers, freshly baked bread, oyster jus and white peach, followed by a full-bodied, taut and layered palate that's seamless and complete, concluding with a pungently mineral finish. It's worth a special effort to seek out, though a decade's patience is warmly advised. BH 96 (9/2022): A deft application of wood lurks in the background of the aromas cool citrus, apple, mineral reduction and ocean breeze wisps. There is an almost painful intensity to the powerful but sleek and defined medium weight plus flavors that brim with minerality on the clean, very dry and hugely long finish. This is also potentially brilliant and well-worth considering. (Drink starting 2032). VM 93 (7/2024): The 2020 Chablis Bougros Côte Bouguerots Grand Cru has a crushed stone scented bouquet. A peppermint trace comes through with aeration. The nose is controlled and citrus-fresh, and I admire the energy. The palate is poised and concentrated, and a silver thread of acidity keeps this Grand Cru tensile and focused. Bright and lightly spiced towards the finish, this fans out with style. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. (Drink between 2025-2044). Neal Martin. |

| BH 93-95 (10/2023): This is the coolest and most restrained of this group of 2022s with its elegant aromas of prominent mineral reduction, lemon-lime, spice and oyster shell. There is almost painful intensity to the intensely stony and strikingly well-detailed larger-bodied yet still beautifully refined flavors that display huge length on the impeccably well-balanced finale. Like the Preuses, this is very classy and built to repay extended keeping. Drink 2032+. |

VM 94+ (8/2017): Pale, green-tinged yellow. Captivating but youthfully reticent scents and flavors of citrus peel, white pepper, fresh herbs, crushed stone and white flowers, plus a whiff of rhubarb. Quite broad and full but not at all heavy in the mouth. This wine doesn't have the acid edge of the Bougros Côte Bouguerots but is wonderfully silky and horizontal, coating every square millimeter of the palate--and it's hardly short of energy! Most impressive today on the superb dusty, mounting finish. This potentially outstanding wine still needs time to gain in complexity but it should evolve positively in bottle for many years. Production here was cut by the pre-harvest hailstorm, but if this fruit was picked earlier than originally forecasted, it does not seem to have suffered for it. Stephen Tanzer. BH 93 (10/2017): ( from 4 separate parcels totaling 4.11 ha, 3 of which are all at the top of the slope.) Once again there is just enough wood present to warrant mentioning on the strikingly fresh, cool and pure nose of mineral reduction, ripe pear, sea water and floral aromas. There is flat out remarkable power to the highly energetic flavors that also display ample amounts of dry extract that imparts a sappy texture to the intensely mineral-driven, explosive and hugely long finish that is unusually dry for the vintage. It's interesting as one can sense an elevated level of alcohol but surprisingly there is no associated finishing warmth to speak of. Drink 2023+. |

BH 95 (10/2019): (from 4 separate parcels totaling 4.11 ha, 3 of which are all at the top of the slope.) Here too there is enough wood, even though subtle, to merit mentioning on the decidedly cool and reserved nose that offers up plenty of floral elements along with those of citrus, iodine and oyster shell. The lavishly rich, muscular and overtly powerful flavors possess the hallmark minerality that carries over to the dense, citrusy and bone dry finish. This beauty should age effortlessly and is class in a glass. Drink 2032+. VM 94 (1/2020): The 2017 Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru is dense and exotic, with tremendous volume and textural richness that develops with a bit of air. It should start to settle down with more time in bottle. Today, though, I am struck by the wine's sheer weight. Antonio Galloni. |

| BH 93 (10/2020): Once again, the nose is both fresh and ripe and while it's not quite as elegant and airy as the Côte Bouguerots there is every bit as much classic Chablis character. There is a really lovely mouthfeel to the sappy large-bodied flavors thanks to the copious quantity of dry extract that also serves to buffer the moderately firm acid spine on the powerful, punchy and intensely saline-inflected finale. While there is a hint of backend warmth, this beautiful effort should age well while adding depth along the way. |

| BH 93-96 (11/2020): (from 4 separate parcels totaling 4.11 ha, 3 of which are all at the top of the slope.) If Kimmeridgian could be distilled, it would likely smell exactly like the nose of the 2019 Les Clos with the additions of wet chalk, citrus zest and oyster shell. There is equally good delineation to the snappy, painfully intense and overtly stony large-bodied flavors that deliver superb length on the balanced finale. This elegant and classy effort is also built on a base of almost pungent minerality and a wine that is indisputably going to age effortlessly for years. Drink 2031+. Don't miss! |

WA 94 (7/2022): Bursting from the glass with aromas of vine blossom, orange zest, crisp white peach and honeycomb, the 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudésir is medium to full-bodied, satiny and enveloping, with a seamless, elegantly fleshy profile and lively balancing acids. As is often the case, it's one of the more demonstrative grand cru bottlings in the range, yet its track record for longevity is impressive. BH 93 (9/2022): A discreet dollop of wood sets off the ever-so-mildly exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, passion fruit and subtle mineral reduction wisps. There is a positively gorgeous texture to the highly refined middleweight flavors that culminate in lightly stony, focused and sneaky long finish. This could use a bit more depth though overall, it is a classic Vaudésir of lace and grace that should generously reward a decade or so of cellaring. |

| BH 92-94 (10/2023): Slightly more evident wood can be found on the cool and elegant aromas of mineral reduction, spiced pear and pretty floral whiffs along with a plenitude of classic Chablis elements. The understated, pure and borderline delicate flavors are at once supple yet beautifully detailed as well as almost aggressively mineral-driven on the superbly long finish. This is pretty much textbook Vaudésir. Drink 2030+. |

BH 93 (6/2020): Once again there is a discreet whiff of exotic fruit to the white peach, spiced tea and dried yellow fruit aromas where a background hint of viognier creeps in. The caressing and unusually sleek medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and focused power on the caressing and refreshingly saline-inflected finish. This is particularly good in the context of a very hot and dry vintage which is not usually especially propitious for Criots. Drink 2028+. WA 94 (1/2020): Aromas of orange oil, honeycomb, ripe pears, wheat toast and paraffin wax introduce the 2018 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, ample and textural wine that's fleshy and enveloping but underpinned by an impressively chalky structure that brings unusual tension and grip to this inherently generous terroir. |

JM 95 (5/2022): Pale lemon and lime colour. A vigorous nose with a stony reduction, that allows the fruit to flourish alongside. Some citrus, then a really intense weight of fruit, on the cusp of white and yellow. Very pure, very linear, plenty of energy. Excellent texture on the palate. VM 93 (11/2022): The 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru has a reductive nose but there is some fine fruit here, touches of orange pith, honeysuckle and melted candle wax. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a hint of wood to be subsumed on the entry, impressive depth with a slightly toasty finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. (Drink between 2024-2035.) Neal Martin. BH 93 (9/2023): A ripe yet attractively fresh, cool, pure and elegant nose combines notes of various white fleshed fruit scents that in particular include Granny Smith and pear, along with hints of citrus and wet stone. There is excellent intensity as well as fine richness to the detailed and mineral-driven flavors where the minerality adds a sense of lift to the complex and sneaky long finale. While indisputably young, it's not so backward that it couldn't be approached now even though a few more years of keeping should help to add better depth. (Drink starting 2026.) |

| BH 91 (10/2020): Hints of matchstick and exotic tea add breadth to the ripe, pure and pretty floral and poached pear-scented nose that is trimmed in just enough wood to comment on. The elegant middle weight flavors possess a lilting mouthfeel before concluding in a lightly stony, sleek, focused and persistent finish that gradually reveals just a touch of sweetness. This is particularly fine though it will need to develop more depth to merit its rating so do hold it for at least a few years. (Drink starting 2024). |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |

| BH 93 (6/2020): ( from a .33 ha parcel in Les Languettes.) A much more restrained nose reluctantly offers up its array of exceptionally floral-infused aromas that include those of acacia, lilac and rose petal along with hints of Granny Smith apples and lemongrass. There is outstanding volume and power to the relatively refined larger-scaled flavors that are much, much more mineral-driven on the youthfully austere, serious and compact finish. This beauty will need at least a few years of keeping first and should amply reward 10 to 12. Drink 2028+. |

WA 94 (2/2020): Blockier and denser than the Criots, the 2018 Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with scents of honeycomb, orange oil, white flowers and toasted nuts. Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's lively and long, its rich core of fruit underpinned by ripe acids. Broad-shouldered and expressive, this will drink well sooner than the tighter-knit 2017. BH 93 (6/2020): This is at once both fresher and more elegant with its floral suffused aromas of spiced pear, apple, spice and admirably discreet wood. There is good vibrancy if only average density to the sleek, refined and reasonably well-detailed medium weight flavors that display outstanding length on the very dry finale. This needs to develop better depth to achieve my rating but given the lovely balance and tightly wound finish, it has the potential to do so. |

WA 94 (2/2020): Dramatic and expressive, the 2018 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru exhibits aromas of orange rind, peach, honeyed pears and marzipan. Full-bodied, supple and textural, it's an enveloping but youthfully structured wine that will reward at least a couple of years of bottle age. Céline Gagnard told me that this site handled the hot conditions well. BH 92? (6/2020): This rachets up the ripeness level even more with its overtly exotic aromas of apricot, peach, tangerine and mango along with a curious hint of caramel. The big-bodied and serious flavors possess a luscious mid-palate though there is plenty of power to the sappy finish that is borderline flat. As the description suggests, this is somewhat awkward and diffuse. It may well recover but it's not clear that this is going to be at its usual excellent level. VM 91+ (11/2022): The 2018 Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru has an open, tropical-tinged bouquet that is quite seductive with all those passion fruit and pineapple scents, but it does not convey a sense of mineralité. It actually becomes more reductive when returning to my glass after 10 minutes. The palate is balanced with a slightly spiced opening, oily in texture (botrytis?) with plenty of extract. Rather dense and muscular towards the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 white tasting. Neal Martin. |

WA 95 (2/2020): Aromas of clear honey, blanched almonds and pear mingle with hints of citrus blossom and orange oil, introducing the 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru, a full-bodied, elegantly textural wine that's supple and enveloping, with lovely depth and dimension at the core, underpinned by lively acids. Long and perfumed, this is an elegant, expressive Montrachet from Fontaine-Gagnard. VM 94 (1/2020): The 2018 Montrachet Grand Cru has a much more intense, richer bouquet compared to the domaine’s other two grand crus, offering scents of dried honey, quince, honeysuckle and jasmine, all very well defined and determined to make an impression. The powerful, voluminous palate is well balanced with a fine seam of acidity, superb grip and an outstanding finish that fans out. This is a Montrachet with a great crescendo. A great "Monty" from the domaine, although just one-and-a-half barrels were produced this year. Neal Martin. BH 93 (6/2020): Not completely surprisingly, this is the most reserved wine in the range with its reluctant array of green fruit, acacia, wide range of spice elements and a dollop of toasty oak. There is fine richness to the broad-shouldered flavors that exhibit focused power on the sleekly muscular and impressively long finish. This will likely surpass the Bâtard in time but for now, they are qualitative equals. |

| JM 87 (11/2019): One plot of 3ha from Mâcon-Lugny. Vinified by Thibault but at the Cave de Lugny. Kept in tank. A lovely little green tint to the colour, fresh and delicious nose, sunshine and spring flowers, not too opulent. Will be fined for the protein. Yellow pears and plums, pineapple, too exotic to be a Côte d’Or Bourgogne but lovely wine nonetheless. |

| BH 92 (6/2020): ( from Pernand fruit.) Cool and restrained aromas are comprised by aromas of green apple, mineral reduction, airy floral and an interesting hint of tangerine peel. There is both good volume and intensity to the beautifully delineated and overtly mineral-driven flavors that possess riper acidity on the balanced citrus-tinged finale. This needs to develop more depth but the potential aging curve is such that it should develop in time. Drink 2028+. |

BH 95 (10/2020): This is perhaps the most elegant and floral-infused wine in the range with its array of various white flower scents, especially acacia that are nuanced by wisps of ocean breeze, iodine and algae. The restrained and well-detailed flavors possess a sophisticated and refined mouthfeel while the stony and chiseled finish exhibiting excellent persistence on the bone-dry finish. This is class in a glass and a stunning rendition of the appellation though note well that at least moderate patience is strongly advised. (Drink starting 2030). VM 91 (9/2020): The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a touch more tropical fruit on the nose compared to the Les Butteaux, offering faint passion fruit, white peach and apricot scents with aeration. Lovely definition. The palate is well balanced with a slight waxiness on the entry, and a little pithy in style. Hints of yellow plum and spices emerge toward a finish that develops an appealing creamy texture with time. Excellent. But personally I prefer the nervosité of the Butteaux. (Drink between 2021-2032). WA 92 (8/2021): The 2018 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is performing well in bottle, mingling notes of crisp green apple and honeycomb with hints of oyster shell, orange oil and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and incisive, its ample core of fruit is girdled by bright acids, before concluding with a saline finish. |
