WA 96 (8/2014): More forward, open and textured, the 2000 Hermitage is an almost promiscuous effort that’s just hard to resist. According to Jean-Louis, this wine has never shut down and has always delivered plenty of pleasure. It has classic cassis and blackberry fruit, bacon fat, violets and herbs to go with a full-bodied, layered and seamless, if not voluptuous, style on the palate. I’d line bottles up for drinking over the coming couple of years, but it should hold nicely for upward of a decade.
VM 94+ (1/2003): Saturated ruby. Superripe aromas of blackberry, blueberry, clove, minerals and black licorice. Very ripe but precise and penetrating. At once lush and powerful; seamless but with terrific thrust. Black fruit, flint, spice and dark chocolate flavors offer considerable density and verve. Finishes with substantial noble tannins that arrive very late. Has all the elements for longevity. Give this 10 to 12 years before pulling the cork. This comes across as a bit denser than the young 2001 but not finer. The Chaves clearly did a superb job of harvesting in 2000. Stephen Tanzer. |

VM 94+ (2/2005): Good bright medium ruby. Subtly complex, granitic nose melds cassis, blueberry, smoky gunflint, pepper, tar, bitter chocolate, roast coffee, leather, game and animal fur. Wonderfully juicy but currently rather folded in on itself. But this has brilliant acidity, precision and penetration on the palate. Almost painfully intense and wonderfully long and gripping on the back. Very firm and structured but not at all dry. This will need a good decade of additional cellaring.
WA 91-95 (6/2003): Tasting through the component parts of the 2001 Hermitage reveals what should be an Outstanding wine with a Burgundian-like finesse. The most elegant component emanates from Les Beaumes and Pelia, and the denser, thicker wines from Meal, l’Ermite, and Bessards. The wine will possess a dense ruby/purple color in addition to plenty of sweet cassis fruit, medium body, noticeably high tannin, and gorgeous purity as well as symmetry. It will be built along the lines of the 1996 rather than the 2000 or 1999. |

The 2009 Hermitage exhibits a black/purple color along with a sumptuous nose of roasted meats, ground pepper, black currants, blackberry jam, and subtle smoke and licorice. The extraordinary bouquet is followed by a wine of extravagant intensity as well as tremendous focus and precision. While not as powerful as the blockbuster 2003, the amazing 2009 may turn out to be a modern day version of their magnificent 1990 (which is drinking incredibly well at present). Anyone who loves Hermitage and has a cold cellar should be lining up to get a few bottles of this beauty.
VM 96 (4/2012): Tasted in four components that were to be blended at the end of November, 2011: #1: Deep cherry and dark berries on the nose and palate, with slow-mounting spiciness and serious finishing cling and power. #2: Wilder and more pungent, offering intense floral-accented red and dark berry qualities and notes of olive and candied licorice. This is mostly Meal, according to Chave. #3: Deep, smoky and aromatic, displaying an array of dark berry and spice qualities and a strong potpourri note. Juicy and focused on the finish, with the dark fruit note repeating. #4: Stunning aromas of violet, rose, black raspberry and cola, with a blast of Asian spices on the back. Juicy, mineral-driven and pure, with excellent finishing clarity and lingering sweetness. This should be a stunner. |

WA 100 (12/2012): Pure perfection, the 2010 Hermitage reminds Jean-Louis Chave of their 1990. It appears to be a richer, fresher example of what I remember the 1990 tasting like in 1992. The wine exhibits an opaque purple color along with an extraordinary bouquet of sweet blackberry fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, lead pencil shavings, acacia flowers, bouquet garni, meat and crushed rocks. Full-bodied and stunningly rich with laser-like precision, this is a powerful, massive yet exceptionally well-balanced wine that should be forgotten for a decade and drunk over the following 30-40 years.
VM 96-97 (4/2013): Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed, heady bouquet displays an array of candied dark fruits, floral pastille and spicecake aromas. Powerful cherry and raspberry preserve flavors stain the palate and show remarkable depth, with bright acidity adding lift and cut. Finishes with bright, spice-accented cherry and candied licorice flavors and superb persistence. |

WA 96+ (12/2014): Tasted from bottle, the 2011 Hermitage sports a ruby/purple color to go with an awesome bouquet of sweet cassis, dried flowers, spice-box, ground pepper and crushed stone. One of the more serious, focused and structured 2011s, it has fabulous concentration, sweet tannin and a seamless texture. Give it 5-6 years and enjoy bottles over the following 2 decades or more.
VM 94-95 (3/2014): This wine was still broken out into five different pre-blended components when I visited in November but should be in bottle by now. #1: Intense red fruit and floral qualities, with a bright mineral underpinning. #2: Wilder and spicier, with zesty red fruit and star anise nuances and a touch of smokiness. #3: More dark and brooding, showing powerful bitter cherry and cassis qualities and strong back-end power. #4: Distinctly mineral-driven, precise red fruit and floral pastille aromas and flavors, with a deeper note of cola in the background. #5: Powerful cassis and bitter cherry aromas and flavors pick up spiciness and floral character with a little air. The most densely packed of these samples but showing surprising finishing vivacity and cut. Jean-Louis thinks that this wine "will be a little strict" for a while after bottling and hopes that people don't jump too quickly into it simply because 2011 is perceived as an easy vintage. JD 98-100 (4/2018): Not yet bottled, the 2015 Hermitage has perfection written all over it and reminds me of the 2010. Graphite, charcoal, liquid rock, and sensationally pure crème de cassis notes all soar from the glass of this full-bodied, concentrated, opulent 2015. This is a big, sexy beast of a Hermitage, yet it has the classic minerality, purity, and balance shown by just about every wine made from this estate. Forget bottles for 4-5 years, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 4-5 decades.
WA 98-100 (12/2017): After tasting several intermediate blends that will ultimately be combined in some proportion to create the 2015 Hermitage, I would not be surprised to see the final result achieve perfection. Although massively ripe and concentrated, there is still a feeling of balance and elegance in the wines that I fully expect to carry over into the final product. As the blending process isn’t complete, Jean-Louis warned that it was too early to say if there would be a Cuvee Cathelin, which is typically an Outstanding parcel that, for some reason, doesn’t work in the rest of the blend.
VM 97 (4/2018): Youthful purple color. Mineral-accented dark berries, star anise, cola, olive and pungent flowers on the explosively perfumed nose. Offers impressively concentrated, expansive flavors of black raspberry, spicecake, smoked meat and candied flowers that are complicated by licorice candy and dark chocolate notes that sneak in on the back half. Sweet, sappy and precise on the floral- and dark fruit-driven finish, which shows Outstanding clarity and round, harmonious tannins that build smoothly and steadily. Josh Raynolds. |

All three samples showed brilliant purity of fruit, full body, a forward, seamless, elegant texture, and classic building minerality. This is haute couture at its finest and is pure class that could come from nowhere else. As with most 2016s, it's going to be relatively accessible in its youth, yet this is one Hermitage that's not going to hit maturity for another 8-10 years and will keep for three decades.
WA 96-98 (10/2018): Still mostly in separate components, the 2016 Hermitage nevertheless looks sensational. Les Beaumes was very pretty and red fruited, with silky tannins (94 - 96). Le Meal was putting itself forward as plush and velvety, with flowers, crushed stone and ripe fruit (95 - 97). A combined sample of les Bessards and l'Hermite showed great, granite-derived structure allied to licorice and cassis (96 - 98).
JS 97-98 (8/2018): A wealth of floras with spiced dark chocolate, peppery notes, graphite, dark stones and grilled meats. There’s a very concentrated core of red and black fruit on the palate, weighing deep into the middle with super fine yet strong tannins wrapping up the wine. There is also enduring red-fruit freshness emerging into the finish. This is a great Hermitage that will deliver incredible age potential and enjoy an esteemed life in bottle. Barrel sample. |

JD 98 (11/2020): Just an incredible Hermitage in every sense, the 2017 Hermitage reminds me of the 2016 yet on steroids (or maybe a more finesse-driven example of the 2015?). Revealing a deep, saturated purple color as well as a stunning nose of red and black currants, kirsch, Asian spices, cured meats, ground pepper, and Acacia flowers, it shows more classic Chave minerality with time in the glass, and if this doesn't put a smile on your face, I don't know what will. These all carry to a full-bodied, powerful, yet seamless wine that has the sunny, extroverted style of the vintage yet still packs incredible mid-palate depth, ripe, polished tannins, no hard edges, and one hell of an incredible finish. It's going to be relatively accessible by this cuvée’s standards and offer considerable pleasure in its youth, yet also have 30-40 years of longevity. (Drink between 2020-2060).
VM 97 (4/2020): Saturated ruby. Displays expansive aromas of ripe blackberry, cherry liqueur, licorice, candied flowers and olive, plus spice and mineral nuances that build as the wine opens up. At once weighty and energetic in character, offering densely packed black/blue fruit preserve flavors and hints of violet candy, star anise, black tea and smoky minerals. JD 100 (12/2022): I was blown away by the 2018 Hermitage from barrel, and it unquestionably doesn't disappoint from bottle. Reminding me slightly of the 2009, it possesses off-the-charts richness and depth, but like all great wines, stays pure, balanced, and light on its feel. Extraordinary notes of cassis, blue fruits, graphite, violets, and flowers define the bouquet, and this full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional beauty has ripe tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. This is pure Hermitage magic. Given its extravagant richness and texture, it should be relatively accessible in just a handful of years yet evolve for three decades or more. (Drink between 2025-2050).
WA 99 (1/2022): Chave's 2018 Hermitage is another in a long list of legends to emerge from this meticulously run estate. Showing remarkably complex aromas of pressed violets, ground cloves and cracked peppercorns against a backdrop of cassis, blueberries and licorice, it's a super effort. Full-bodied, concentrated, rich and velvety in feel, it's seamless and long—just the complete package in a wine that's surprisingly approachable, yet should prove capable of aging effortlessly for two decades or more.
VM 97 (12/2022): Opaque ruby. Powerful, smoke- and spice-accented black and blue fruit, exotic spice, olive, cured tobacco, cured bacon and violet aromas show superb clarity and a bright mineral top note. Deeply concentrated and broad on the palate, offering sappy, alluringly sweet cherry, blackcurrant, fruitcake, salty olive and violet pastille flavors plus hints of licorice and allspice. JD 98+ (3/2024): Moving to the reds from bottle, both these 2020s have incredibly concentrated, pure, focused styles that remind me of 2010. The 2020 Hermitage is inky hued, with sensational notes of red, blue, and black fruit as well liquid rock, graphite, burning embers, saddle leather, and hints of candied orange zest. It's a massive, concentrated, powerful wine, yet it stays balanced, has a good sense of freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. As with most great vintages here, it's going to need a decade of bottle age to shed its baby fat and will be a classic Hermitage to enjoy over the following 30 years or so.
WA 94 (5/2025): The 2020 Hermitage from Jean-Louis Chave exhibits aromas of smoke, spices, blood and carnal notes mingled with coniferous forest. Full-bodied, rich and dense, it's robust and somewhat compact, framed by structured tannins that give it an introverted profile. Concluding with notes of bay leaf and pencil lead, it's relatively firm in the finish. Its depth and structured character require patience. |

Showing consistently from when I tasted it on release at the estate, the 2021 is a classy Hermitage that's as good as anything in the vintage, offering solid ripeness in its red and black fruits as well as peppery herb, sappy flower, leather, and gamey aromas and flavors. Cut from the same cloth as the 2014, it's medium-bodied, has a soft, supple mouthfeel, moderate tannins, and beautiful overall balance. It's going to be on a faster evolutionary track and, I suspect, will hit the early stages of its prime drinking wine in another 4-5 years and keep for two decades. (Drink between 2028-2049).

JD 98 (10/2023): Made by Gerard Chave with help from his son Jean-Louis, the 1991 Hermitage Cuvée Cathelin is an incredible treat to taste today, now at 31 years after the grapes were harvested. As always, this is a tiny cuvée that's pulled from the Bessards lieu-dit on the western side of this magical south-facing slope. Fully mature and clearly at its peak, it's considerably richer and more layered than the classic Hermitage and has an almost seemingly Burgundian elegance and nuance in its red and black fruits, flowers, rose petals, crushed stone, and subtly gamey nuances. Remarkably complex, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate and is flawlessly balanced, has resolved tannins, and a gorgeous finish. This heavenly, singular Hermitage isn't going to get better, but it will certainly have a gradual evolution going forward. As Jean-Louis has often told me, the wines don't exist until the bottles are opened, so if you have these, come up with a special occasion and pop a cork.

Superripe yet shapely and light on its feet. Endless, fruit-driven aftertaste. Tannins and acids are covered by sheer material. An extraordinary achievement, even for this very good and somewhat underrated vintage.
WA 98 (4/2002): The 1991 is a sleeper. I suspect many readers have forgotten how spectacular this vintage was in the northern Rhone, particularly Cote Rotie. |

JD 97-99 (11/2022): Lastly, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Homage A Jacque Perrin was tasted out of foudre and is clearly another brilliant vintage here. I always find this cuvée, which is almost all Mourvedre, to offer more blue fruit characteristics in its youth, and the 2020 is no exception, offering tons of blueberry, cassis, and black raspberry as well as notes of smoked meat, tobacco, graphite, and peppery herbs. With remarkable purity, full-bodied richness, building yet incredible tannins, and the same straight, focused, powerful mouthfeel of the classic cuvée, it's not going to show its full potential until a solid decade after the vintage and it will be a 30-year wine.
WA 97-99 (5/2022): Tasted from foudre, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is approximately 60% Mourvèdre (from the same parcel, year after year), with the balance a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise. Ripe plums and truffle-like notes mark the nose, while the palate is full-bodied and rich, with a long, velvety finish. Showing even more complexity and length than the regular bottling, there's a chance this could reach a triple-digit score down the road.
VM 98 (6/2023): The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is a monumental effort. It dazzles with pristine aromas of rose water, crushed violets, red and black cherry, blueberry, forest strawberry, licorice, dried lavender, bay leaves, sage, black olive and cardamom. Firmly formed like a skyscraper, the wine continuously builds on the palate, exposing layer upon layer of jewel-like fruit. As the taste develops, pixelated tannins enter the scene, adding to the wine's seamless mouthfeel. Despite the elevated flavor concentration, the wine is so light on its feet that tasting it is an almost ethereal moment. JD 100 (12/2022): The 2020 Ermitage Le Pavillon is pure gold, and Hermitage doesn't get any better. Incredible aromatics of cassis, graphite, burning embers, and crushed stone all emerge from this beauty. Stunningly proportioned and incredibly pure, it's full-bodied, concentrated, and powerful, but as with all great vintages of this cuvée, it's going to demand bottle age. While Les Greffieux and Le Méal bring much more opulence, this is the powerhouse, long-distance candidate in the lineup. It's an incredible effort. Give bottles upwards of a decade in the cellar, and it should evolve effortlessly over the following 30-40 years.
WA 96-98 (1/2022): Chapoutier's 2020 Ermitage le Pavillon shows a more chiseled, defined structure than the other 2020s, suggesting greater potential longevity. JD 98+ (3/2024): Moving to the reds from bottle, both these 2020s have incredibly concentrated, pure, focused styles that remind me of 2010. The 2020 Hermitage is inky hued, with sensational notes of red, blue, and black fruit as well liquid rock, graphite, burning embers, saddle leather, and hints of candied orange zest. It's a massive, concentrated, powerful wine, yet it stays balanced, has a good sense of freshness, building tannins, and a great finish. As with most great vintages here, it's going to need a decade of bottle age to shed its baby fat and will be a classic Hermitage to enjoy over the following 30 years or so.
WA 94 (5/2025): The 2020 Hermitage from Jean-Louis Chave exhibits aromas of smoke, spices, blood and carnal notes mingled with coniferous forest. Full-bodied, rich and dense, it's robust and somewhat compact, framed by structured tannins that give it an introverted profile. Concluding with notes of bay leaf and pencil lead, it's relatively firm in the finish. Its depth and structured character require patience. |

It has lots of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, and dried garrigue nuances as well as medium to full-bodied richness on the palate. JD 91 (12/2022): A great introduction to the wines of this terrific vigneron, the 2020 Saint Joseph Silice has classic darker berry fruits as well as peppery herbs, violets, and some obvious minerality on both the nose and palate. These carry to a medium-bodied effort with good acidity, firm yet ripe tannins, and outstanding length.
JS 91 (2/2022): An interesting nose of blackberries and blueberries with some graphite and leather adding interest. Robust structure for a St.-Joseph with plenty of pepper and spice, but the fruit is more than adequate to carry all this. Good length, if not tremendously complex. Sustainable. Drinkable now, but best from 2023. |

| JD 99 (3/2024): Lastly, the 2020 Hermitage Ligne de Crête comes from the highest point on Hermitage and was destemmed and saw 20 months in a mix of new and once-used barrels. It's clearly the biggest, baddest beauty in the lineup and is another palate-saturating Hermitage with extraordinary richness and depth. Blackberries, currants, black truffle, smoked meats, espresso, and new leather notes all define this incredible wine, which has a deep, full-bodied, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, and incredibly minerality that emerges on the finish. It shows attractive aromas of raspberries and apricot on the nose, a medium to full-bodied feel on the palate and a savory finish that nicely balances mouthwatering acids and softly dusty tannins. It should drink well for the rest of this decade. |

These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is medium-bodied and has a supple, seamless texture, impressive tannins, and a great finish. It's unquestionably an outstanding wine, and I'd be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming 10-15 years. |

JD 94+ (3/2023): While the classic cuvée is brought up all in tank, the 2020 Gigondas Cuvée Florence spends over a year in barrels, and it always has a touch of oak in its aromatics in its youth, but this integrates nicely with just few years of bottle age. More closed aromatically, it has slightly darker fruits as well as notes of peppery garrigue, cedarwood, and spice. Nicely concentrated, medium to full-bodied, and structured, this is another great vintage for this estate. Give bottles 4-5 years if you can, and this will see its 20th birthday in fine form.
Decanter 94 (10/2021): Coffee bean and vanilla pod oak work well with the fruit. Full-bodied, there's a little herbal touch in the background, oregano and blackcurrant leaf. Grip and intensity on the palate, this is quite lean structurally, but there's some serious fruit here. Will take some time to come together, but should be complex. (Drink between 2026-2034) |

WA 98-100 (2/2022): The undisputed star of the cellar this vintage (at least at this stage), the 2020 Cote Rotie La Landonne is not only unbelievably complex on the nose—with an awesome stew of vegetal-herbal nuances blended with cassis and smoked meat—but full-bodied, concentrated, velvety-textured and remarkably long and tannic. Patience will be required.
JD 98-100 (3/2024): I think the star of the show in 2020 will be the 2020 Côte Rôtie La Landonne, and this is one I can't wait to taste from bottle. It's slightly more elegant and supple compared to the massive 2019, yet it has a similar style in its extravagant dark fruits, truffle, game, iron, and smoked meat-like aromas and flavors. It's a powerful, full-bodied, concentrated Côte Rôtie that's going to need to be forgotten for 8-10 years, although if you ever wanted to try a truly great young La Landonne, this might be the one given its incredible fruit and texture.
VM 97-100 (3/2024): The potentially perfect 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Landonne is riveting. Bringing together all the finest elements of the Guigal house style, it explodes from the glass with smoky blackberry jam, menthol, crushed rocks, cured meat, iodine, licorice, cloves and black olive tapenade. Charged with a massive tannic core, this concentrated powerhouse dazzles with off-the-charts intensity yet total clarity and focus. WA 93-95 (2/2022): Dominated by dark notes of espresso, black olive and pumpernickel, the 2020 Cote Rotie La Mouline was missing the vineyard's normally expressive floral aromas on this occasion. Full-bodied and rich, it's an atypically muscular and closed vintage of La Mouline right now. It will be interesting to see how it evolves over the next few years of élevage.
JD 97-98 (3/2024): Leading off the single vineyards from barrel, the 2020 Côte Rôtie La Mouline, which includes a solid dose of Viognier, comes from a steep, terraced parcel in the Côte Blonde lieu-dit and will spend four years in new French oak. I don't think it has the sheer density of the 2015 or 2019, but what it does have is an incredibly classic La Mouline profile of floral, perfumed red and black fruits, spicy oak, roasted meats, and exotic spice that's to die for. With full-bodied richness, a plush, layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, and seamless, integrated tannins, it's going to shine with just a few years of bottle age yet evolve for 15-30 years in cold cellars.
VM 96-98 (3/2024): The 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline is spectacular, mingling orange rind, cured meat, crushed rocks, violets, raspberry and cedar with a splash of espresso. Minty gradations complement the enticing aromatic profile. Tightly knit and sweet-tasting tannins neatly frame this outstanding La Mouline, managing to combine elegance with power remarkably well. JD 97-99 (3/2024): The 2020 Côte Rôtie La Turque brings a touch more mid-palate density and offers a straighter, more inward bouquet of cassis, graphite, smoked meats, and iron, with subtle gamey, bloody background nuances. It too is full-bodied and has a concentrated, structured mouthfeel, remarkable purity, and a killer finish.
VM 96-99 (3/2024): The 2020 Côte-Rôtie La Turque is shaping up to be terrific. Bold and supremely complex, it unwinds with expressive mocha, ripe black fruits, cured meat, pencil shavings and cedarwood nuances. Refreshing acidity neatly balances the elevated flavor concentration, all framed by a firm yet polished tannic corset. The huge tannins at the finish are finely chiseled, suggesting this has decades of life ahead of it. From 40 to 100-year-old syrah vines. From biodynamically grown grapes.

This carries to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated barrel sample that stays fresh and lively, with solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's certainly showing better today than from the domaine, and this is one that, if the trajectory continues, is certainly going to be an impressive Hermitage.

JD 93 (5/2024): The 2020 Côte Rôtie Terrasses is terrific and shows the forward, sexy style of the vintage while still being classic Côte Rôtie! Black raspberries, peppery herbs, spring flowers, and a kiss of game all define the bouquet, and it's medium-bodied, with a supple, silky mouthfeel, soft tannins, and a great finish. It stays light on its feet and has a good sense of freshness, and it should evolve gracefully for a decade or more.
WA 91-94 (1/2022): Tasting through several parcels/barrels, the 2020 Cote Rotie Terrasses looks to be a solid effort, marked by slightly vegetal notes up front and almost sherbet-like red fruit flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with decent texture and length, it should be approachable young, with the ability to age at least a decade. |

| JD 95-97 (11/2021): The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Chaupin is mostly Grenache sourced from the northern part of the appellation (a small part comes from La Crau), and it was 70% destemmed and brought up in foudre and tank. A deeply hued barrel sample, it offers lots of cassis and pure black raspberry fruits, medium to full body, incredible purity, great tannins, and a blockbuster finish. This is another regal, flawlessly put together Grenache from this talented team. |

JD 96+ (11/2022): The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4-5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage.
WA 90+? (9/2023): The 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Cuvee du Papet is a perplexing beast, with ample concentration and tannins but only modest cherry fruit and hints of clove on the nose. It's full-bodied, maybe even a touch warm on the palate, but also quite chewy—will it have enough fruit to outlast the tannins? Normally, this cuvée is quite easy to read and sits squarely a notch above the regular CdP, but even after trying two separate bottles, it wasn't clear this time around. |

| JD 91 (11/2022): I loved the classic 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape from this great estate, which is based on 38% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 25% Mourvedre, and the rest a mix of varieties. It was partially destemmed and brought up in 15% new oak. Currants, darker cherries, earthy garrigue, and spicy notes all emerge on the nose, and it’s medium-bodied, balanced, and shines for its purity of fruit. It’s beautifully done and well worth following over the coming 10-12 years. |

That's obviously not a bad thing, since this plump, full-bodied, beautifully textured Cornas has remarkable purity and elegance as well as richness. Blackberries, blueberries, subtle smoke, graphite, and violets all emerge from the glass, and it has a seamless, incredibly elegant texture.

JD 95-97 (2/2022): From vines slightly higher in elevation, the 2020 Cornas Granit 60 is similarly purple-hued and has more primordial aromas and flavors of blueberries, cassis, pepper, and scorched earth. It's more structured, mineral-laced, and austere, and is going to require patience.
VM 95 (12/2022): Glass-staining ruby. Intensely perfumed cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of licorice, candied flowers, olive paste and black pepper. Appealingly sweet and energetic on the palate, offering pliant cherry, dark berry preserve, exotic spice and floral pastille flavors that show impressive depth; a smoky mineral flourish gains strength on the back half. Decanter 95 (10/2021): There are herbal depths here, but they're currently filled by the intense, powerful berry fruits. Medium- to full-bodied, this has good concentration and intensity of fruit, coupled with powerful but very ripe tannin. There's good energy here, the wine is upright and not as soft and easy-going as some other Cornas this year. Great vitality and salinity, this is well-balanced, fresh and classically Cornas. A satisfying and energising wine with a long finish. 50-year-old vines on very steep slopes, 70% destemmed. No pigeage, natural yeasts, then spending 16 months in two to eight-year-old barrels. JD 96-98 (2/2022): Lastly, the 2020 Cornas La Geynale comes from a single lieu-dit and is not destemmed. It's closer in style to the Granit 60 and has young and unformed aromas and flavors of blue fruits, crushed stone, pepper, and liquid violets. Straight-up heavenly on the palate, it's full-bodied and has a seamless, pure, elegant texture, ample tannins, and a great finish.
WA 96-98 (1/2022): Ancient vines, a near-perfect southern exposition and Paris's genius touch combine in his 2020 Cornas la Geynale, which merits serious consideration as wine of the vintage within the tiny Cornas appellation. Spectacular aromas of blueberries and cassis lead the way, garnished by hints of sage, bay leaf, licorice and crushed stone. Full-bodied and ripe, it's nevertheless neither overly heavy nor rich, with an intriguing sense of weightlessness that easily carries that swirl of flavors through the long, silky finish.
Decanter 98 (10/2021): A wine that fizzes and sparks with crackling berry fruits and dried herbs. Full-bodied but not massive in the mouth, this has soaring power and energy. Perfectly balanced, with searing, mouth-coating, super-fine tannin. A wine like a thunder crack that takes you by surprise, it shocks the palate. Long finish. This is an exceptional vintage for Vincent Paris. 100-year-old vines. No destemming. Five-day cold maceration, then fermented with wild yeasts. Twice daily remontage, no punching down, then aged for 16 months in two to eight-year-old barriques. Grown on the granite slopes of lieu-dit La Geynale, one of the finest of the appellation. VM 96 (12/2022): Saturated ruby. A powerfully scented bouquet evokes ripe, spice-accented black and blue fruits, potpourri and exotic spices, along with savory olive paste, botanical herbs and smoked meat notes. Shows superb clarity, energy and depth to its sappy cassis, bitter cherry, licorice and candied violet flavors, which becomes livelier as the wine gains air. JD 95-97 (11/2022): Another wine that showed better this go-round as well is the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Da Capo, and it's always a good sign when a wine gets better over the course of its élevage. Plenty of ripe black fruits, roasted garrigue, gamey meats, and flowers define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with plenty of mid-palate depth, a focused, more elegant mouthfeel, and building tannins. While I’m not convinced this matches previous vintages, it’s not far off, and certainly time will tell. It's unquestionably a gorgeous Châteauneuf du Pape.
WA 96-98 (5/2022): Based on this showing, I couldn't definitely say that the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée da Capo will turn out better than the hugely impressive Cuvée Réservée. Lavender, bay leaf and purple raspberries stand out on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied, silky and elegant. It's perhaps slightly more concentrated, with more tannic grip on the finish and a firmer structure. One for the cellar.
VM 97 (6/2023): Two thousand twenty marks the eighth time that Laurence Féraud has chosen to vinify a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Da Capo, which made its debut in the 1998 vintage. A vineyard selection from parcels in La Crau, Escondudes and Monpertuis, all harvested a little bit later than the grapes destined to go into the Cuvée Réservée, this year’s blend is 70% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 3% Mourvèdre and the rest split among other permitted varieties. Aged in foudre for two years and achieving 15.8% alcohol, it soars from the glass with expressive aromas of dried rose petals, slightly cooked red and black fruits, licorice, dried herbs, tobacco, cured meat and white pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and built like a brick wall, it will reward bottle age. Nicholas Greinacher. |

JD 91-93 (2/2022): The 2020 Côte Rôtie Ampodium is well worth seeking out, and it’s been a great value now in just about every vintage I’ve tasted. Medium to full-bodied, pure, elegant, and balanced, it has lots of textbook Côte Rôtie red and black fruits, violets, and peppery herbs, with some graphite and minerality as well. It’s clearly an outstanding wine, and I’d be happy to drink a bottle any time over the coming 10-12 years or more.
WA 91-93 (1/2022): Pierre Rostaing has been shortening the cuvaison for this cuvee, and the 2020 Cote Rotie Ampodium received closer to three weeks on the skins than four. It's still impressively dark and rich, with scents of black olives, violets, raspberries and a touch of orange zest. Medium to full-bodied and velvety in feel, it looks like a strong year for the estate's blended wine. |

A candidate for the wine of the vintage, it has a similar bouquet to the Prestige and has beautiful red and black fruits (even some blue fruits), flowers, garrigue, and spice. This carries to a full-bodied 2020 with a layered, seamless mouthfeel, moderate acidity, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. It doesn’t get much better than this in 2020! Drink this sexy, seamless, incredibly compelling Châteauneuf du Pape over the coming 15+ years. |

VM 94 (1/2023): Aged for two years in demi-muids, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Guigasse comes in at 15% alcohol. An expressive single varietal Grenache, it bursts from the glass with fragrant aromas of rose petal, raspberry, forest strawberry, dried herbs, mint and a dash of white pepper. Full-bodied, concentrated and framed by plush tannins, it is impeccably well balanced by lively acids before a strikingly complex finish. (Drink between 2025-2038). Nicholas Greinacher.
WA 96-98 (9/2023): On this visit, I slightly preferred the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Guigasse to the Le Grand Pin. Also 100% whole-cluster Grenache, it's much the same, but maybe a bit less floral and a bit more concentrated. Roses, herbal tea, blackberries and black cherries appear on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is supple and almost airy in feel yet with intense, lingering flavors. Just terrific stuff.
JD 93-95 (11/2022): he 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Guigasse is cut from the same cloth, with a big, spicy bouquet of ripe black cherries, Asian spice, Provençal garrigue, and sappy flowers. It's rich, medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, and a seamless texture. It's a big mouthful of classic Southern Rhône goodness that can be drunk today or cellared for 10-15 years. As with the Grand Pin, this is all non-destemmed Grenache that comes from the La Guigasse lieu-dit (also sandy soils) and is brought up all in used demi-muids. |

| JD 97 (11/2022): The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is also all Grenache but was raised all in demi-muids (I believe all used). Its more ruby/plum color is followed by an incredible bouquet of mulled red and black fruits, sweet Provençal herbs, spice box, and graphite. It's slightly broader and more expansive than the Deux Freres and has a sexy, full-bodied mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. This reminds me a little of the 2006, and while it's already brilliant, I have no doubt it will evolve for 15-20 years in cold cellars. |

| JD 96 (11/2022): Leading off the three Châteauneuf du Pape releases, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Trois Source comes from three different terroirs located in the northern part of the appellation, just across the street from the domaine. Roasted Provençal garrigue, black licorice, black raspberries, Asian spices, and a hint of cassis all define the bouquet, and it hits the palate with a layered, medium to full-bodied profile that has silky tannins and no hard edges. It's much more up-front and approachable than the more structured Les Hauts-Lieux and is going to drink fabulously well over the coming 15+ years. |

JD 95 (11/2022): The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is another winner from this team, and readers can’t go wrong here. Based on 75% Grenache, 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre, with the balance Cinsault, it was partially destemmed and brought up all in foudre. This beauty just about jumps out of the glass with its Provençal aromatics of ripe cherries, ground pepper, saddle leather, garrigue, and spice. These carry to a medium to full-bodied wine that has the vintage’s charming, pure character front and center, yet still brings good mid-palate density and ripe tannins. Buy a case, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years.
WA 94 (9/2023): Vieux Donjon's 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape is a balanced, harmonious effort that offers up pretty aromas of strawberries, raspberries and cherries, accented by hints of crushed stone and dusty earth. It's full-bodied and supple, with a long, silky-textured finish. Richer and riper than the 2021, it shows great harmony and texture. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
