2019 Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot
Vintage: 2019
Region: Loire
Color/Type: Red
Size: 750 ML
Tasting Notes:
VM 95-97 (10/2021): Just outside the village, Clos Guillot sits on a slope on clay over limestone. The 2019 Chinon is a serious barrel sample that melts in your mouth with its silken texture. No crushing, very little remontage and a year in used barrels all lend a very gentle touch. The tannins build gradually, coating the mouth with the finest of chalky textures. Excellent acidity keeps things fresh through the finish. Rebecca Gibb.

| WA 90+ (8/2021): The 2015 Chinon La Croix Boissée is intense and floral on the nose, showing ripe, intense and elegant fruit as well as some untamed or even animal flavors that you either accept or don’t. Silky, smooth and elegant on the palate, this is a generous, well-concentrated and structured Cabernet Franc with good freshness, tightly woven and crunchy tannins and a close-meshed limestone structure. The wine has both a certain rustic character as well as a good freshness and finesse. I’d cellar it for at least 10 or 15 years. |

| VM 96 (10/2021): The ripeness of the 2018 vintage gives an almost Syrah/Viognier character to the Chinon La Croix Boissee, which offers sweet black fruit and a creamy apricot note. Sumptuous yet never ever opulent, it's almost as if the wine's just done a yoga class. Plentiful tannins give the inside of your cheeks a chalky rub, while there's surprising freshness considering the ripeness, leading to a lengthy finish. This is a baby that will turn out to be a great adult. Rebecca Gibb. |

| WA 89+ (8/2021): The 2015 Chinon Le Clos Guillot is terribly reductive at the moment and shows lots of volatile and animalic (Brettanomyces) scents on the nose, which also reveals dark, ripe fruit aromas and a nice flintiness. The 2015 is pure and fresh on the palate, silky textured and provided with fine and refreshing if not crisp tannins. However, the 2015 is a bit austere right now and quite astringent and should be allowed to breathe a lot! |

| VM 92 (7/2020): Same aging and vinification as the 2017, but this is even fruiter, with more oak influence. More floral than savory, and purple in all ways: purple color, purple flowers, purple fruit. In the mouth, there’s black cherry and plum and big, wild acidity, almost white-wine-like acidity, and a cool, fresh finish. Should be interesting to see how this has developed in a year or two. (Drink between 2021-2046). Jason Wilson. |

| VM 91-93 (8/2022): Hailing from the limestone-clay slopes on the outskirts of Chinon town, home to other famous vineyards like Clos de l'Olive and Chêne Vert, Le Clos Guillot 2020 offers a cloud of Cabernet Franc fruit with fine refreshing acidity. Savory, silken and seductive, the wine is flooded with a stream of acidity. It is a calm wine with a mass of chalky tannins that coat the palate reassuringly. The finish is long, quiet and scented with dark raspberries and spice. There is a minor complaint of a touch of dryness at the very end of this wine. Rebecca Gibb. |

| VM 93 (10/2021): Sourced from a single vineyard located at the bottom of Chinon's slope on alluvial/clay soils, the 2019 Chinon Les Grézeaux is currently a bit shy in terms of revealing its fruit flavors. It’s also a hint reductive with its smoky bacon characters, but that's unimportant. What matters is the core of fruit and excellent focus. It's very relaxed and fluid with mouthwatering acidity. The tannins are more serious than the front and midpalate would have suggested and betray a little grittiness. Aged 15 months in cement, this could be opened in one to two years, but the concentration and structure offer drinking over a decade. (Drink between 2022-2030). Rebecca Gibb. |

| VM 91 (7/2024): The 2019 Anjou Blanc Bonnes Blanches is a dry, perfumed Chenin Blanc with firm line and length. Its perfumed bouquet offers florals, nectarine and exotic pineapple scents, with notes of pastry evident from long élevage in large barrels. While round and tender, there's a tension that runs through this wine like a sharp knife, which is likely a result of its north-facing position on schist. Long and scented. (Drink between 2024-2030). | WA 91 (6/2024): The 2019 Les Arboises is crafted from vines that experienced significant frost, impacting 60% of its yield, followed by an intensely hot summer. Evoking aromas of spices, flowers, dark wild berries and animal hints, it’s medium to full-bodied, deep and broad in the context of the vintage, with structuring tannins and a somewhat firm, austere finish. |

Vouvray Le Haut Lieu Sec |
$55 |

|
| |
WA 95 (7/2020): The deep brown clay soils of the Haut-Lieu plateau provide the typical fruitiness and freshness wonderfully in Huet's 2019 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Sec. Ripe pear, tangerine and orange fruits with notes of lemon grass and green pimientos intertwined with very fine chalky and later tobacco notes give a remarkably fine, elegant and harmonious, subtly complex and simply gorgeous bouquet with floral (lime blossom!) and yeasty aromas that are immediately attractive. Delicate and linear on the palate, this is a pure, fresh, bone-dry, lean and textured, highly refined and perfectly interwoven Chenin with persistent purity, finesse, salty-mineral tension and very fine tannins. Highly finessed and so pure and vivacious! This is a chalky picture-book Haut-Lieu that can age for many years, even though it is already dangerously seductive! There was no dry Le Haut-Lieu produced in 2018, but the 2019 is possibly the finest, most delicate and elegant I've had in recent years, at least at this early stage. A terrific and buoyant Vouvray that any Chenin lover should try—or, better yet, cellar! VM 92 (10/2020): The 2019 Sec Le Haut-Lieu is classy, polished and simply impeccable. Soft, silky contours wrap around a core of peach and lemon confit fruit. The first impression is all about texture. White flowers, pear and white pepper are some of the nuances that emerge over time, adding complexity, while clean, minerally notes grace the exquisite finish. (Drink between 2020-2034). Antonio Galloni. |

Vouvray Le Mont Sec |
$55 |

|
| |
WA 94+ (7/2020): Again, Huet's 2019 Vouvray Le Mont Sec reflects the unique, south-facing nine-hectare vineyard with its pebbly flint (silex) and green clay soils wonderfully! Pure, fresh and flinty on the deep, intense yet also floral and herbal nose that represents a concentrated and firm white stone fruit aroma with lemon and grapefruit notes as well as fennel, anise and cumin hints. The bouquet gets darker and stonier with a lot of aeration (during days, to be honest). The leitmotif, though, remains the characteristic mix of aromatic fruit aromas with flint stone and volcanic basalt tones that, at this early stage and poured straight from the bottle, remind me of the Rieslings from Forst, Pfalz (Germany). In any case, this is like perfume on rocky stones! On the palate, Le Mont Sec is a rich, lush and round, very concentrated yet silky textured, elegant, vital and tightly structured 2019 with a powerful, intense and long finish with lingering salinity intertwined with tight, perhaps slightly dry tannins. I recommend cellaring this round yet tight and concentrated Chenin for a decade and then drinking it slowly over many years and with, hopefully, even better integrated tannins. VM 94 (10/2020): The 2019 Sec Le Mont is precise and beautifully cut. A wine of laser-like focus, Le Mont dazzles with its purity. Citrus peel and floral accents are nicely lifted, but it is the wine's energy that impresses most. Le Mont is a subtle wine that speaks softly, but what it has to say is priceless. (Drink between 2020-2034). Antonio Galloni. |

WA 94 (1/2021): A tensile, racy wine—two-thirds from Pernand-Vergelesses, one-third from Aloxe-Corton—the 2018 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with scents of white flowers, orange oil, buttery pastry and nutmeg. Medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy, it's chiseled and saline, with impressive cut and grip. BH 91-93 (6/2020): (the proportions have changed again and in 2018 are in a 35/65% proportion from Les Languettes in Aloxe and En Charlemagne in Pernand.) A restrained, ultra-fresh and distinctly floral nose reflects notes of various white orchard fruit aromas, lemon zest and discreet wood toast. There is outstanding volume to the rich and succulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess focused power on the beautifully long and sappy mineral-infused finish that is shaped by citrus-tinged acidity. This isn't quite as structured as the Chevalier, but it too is promising. Drink 2028+. |
